MOSS PARK

A MIXED-USE HUB FOR PERFORMING ARTS

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: PHILIP BEESLEY

At the heart of this mixed-use building is a school for music. The design puts an emphasise on program flexibility. The main atrium (for example), can be used as a lunchroom, work area, performance space, or simply as a connection from one level to another. While the upper floors are reserved for the students, the building becomes increasingly public as you reach the ground floor. *This project received the 2012 Outstanding Design Award and Scholarship at the University of Waterloo

7

TYPE: MIXED-USE

Located in downtown Toronto, this building integrates a school for music with retail, artist residence, a library, and an auditorium. A major consideration was site analysis. This looked at arts-related businesses in the community and their potential integration with the proposed mixed-use building. All of the private program was lifted off the ground. This enhanced transparency, connectivity and a sense of community on the ground level. *This project received the 2012 Outstanding Design Award and Scholarship at the University of Waterloo

An iterative approach was taken to develop program adjacency, overall aesthetic, and the relationship between the building and its site.

PROTEUS MOVES A STUDY OF DURATIONAL SPACE

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: DERECK REVINGTON

Interior Place of Repose

This studio explores the art of architecture imagined through space, time, and motion. Focusing in particular on philosophical concepts, technologies and practices within the spatial and temporal arts. The ambition is to explore new territories of the formal and material imagination. Drawing not only from architecture, but the temporal arts of poetry, music, and cinematography where durational space and an architecture of time is ever present. The studio begins with selecting a video of a moment of extreme weather. This project examines the crushing force of water, as it battles with the explosive buoyancy of a shattered iceberg.

Circulatory Void

`For the material element to engage the whole soul, there must be a dual participation of desire and fear, a participation of good and evil, a peaceful participation of black and white’ -p.12, Water and Dreams Gaston Bachelard Exterior Maquette (Interior Maquettes Above)

A series of models were made as an experimentation of the selected material and its shape-shifting qualities. This developed an understanding of the movement and imagination of matter. With each successive model study, a greater sense of interiority was established. A cultural site was developed to house program that was investigated throughout the term.

10 PROTEUS MOVES A STUDY OF DURATIONAL SPACE

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: DERECK REVINGTON

Durational Section - This was the term used to define an image that compresses various spaces, both interior and exterior into a single moment of time. The space shown in this drawing is a Palaestra; a building that originally existed in Greek culture as a facility for sport and meditation. In this Heterotopia, athletes would train while philosophers engaged in intellectual pursuits. This building embodies the sublime mutability of proteus. It is a facility for movement: a space to train, perform, and express the inner workings of the human condition.

12 CHAIR FOR PROMETHEUS

PROFESSOR: ELIZABETH ENGLISH

Project Team: Simon McKenzie and Giles Hall Prometheus: the Immortal god, the bringer of fire, the omniscient seer, the heroic sufferer. Overcome by the superior power of Zeus, he is chained to a rock where an eagle feeds each day upon his liver. During the conception of this chair, we looked to ideas of the sublime. Fire was studied as a force of creation and an element of destruction. The exterior of the chair is charred black, a reminder of this sublime dialectic.

The chair has two states, one of chaos and one of order. Through the act of sitting, the chair transforms from one to the other. As the individual rises, the chair returns to its natural state of disorder. A gear system is used to allow the chair’s overall shape to transform. This dynamic transformation alludes also to the sublime notion of regeneration, found in the myth of Prometheus.

14 STEEL PAVILION

2010 SSEF COMPETITION

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: TERRI-MEYER BOAKE

Prince’s Island Park is the threshold between North and South Calgary. Amidst the busy current of the pedestrian pathways rests a social energy which inhabits the parks and gardens of the urban island. The structure engages human interaction with the natural world. The design was motivated by the exploration of spaces through curvature.

The “Northern sled” inspires an entirely new species of nomadic living. The roof is composed of a heat-absorbing polycarbonate resin. As one lies down, the transparent ceiling provides a view to the stars above. This vessel attempts to break the boundary between humanity and the natural world. It allows the individual to dwell closer than ever before to the immense beauty of this hostile environment. SOLAR PANELS

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: MARK CICHY

With the added challenge of extreme weather conditions, the design implements an array of cutting-edge material technology for heat and light. LED lighting is built into an intelligent floor system. For energy, the vessel relies on a flexible epoxy solar membrane that wraps around the exterior. Because the vessel is toed by a team of dogs, a light-weight and highly-compact design are absolutely paramount.

20 OASI HOTEL

AN URBAN HOTEL PROJECT

FIELD: ACADEMIC

PROFESSOR: RYSZARD SLIWKA

This urban hotel envisions the transformation from the stale parking lot that exists to a vibrant garden of natural landscapes and public interaction. The hotel includes rooms, a restaurant, and a spa. The natural landscape is extended up into the hotel rooms. These vertical gardens double the amount of valuable corner suites in the hotel. They also provide a responsive shading system. As the summer ends, plant life retracts and the leaves fall, letting direct sunlight warm the rooms.

OFFICE: KAHN GLOBAL DESIGN

LOCATION: BANGALORE, INDIA

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION This has been one of those rare instances in our design studio when we have forgotten most often that we were dealing with Simon as merely a student intern. It is immediately apparent that his ability to grasp architectural concepts, picking up on both technical and contextual aspects of projects allow him to work under minimal guidance to develop design concepts. Simon has a tremendous skill in representation. Whether it was diagramming the development of an idea, pulling together the graphics on a competition board, or creating a stunning rendering, he could always be counted on to surprise us with the freshness and boldness of his approach. While at KGD, as part of the design studio, he worked on a range and scale of projects from residential master planning exercises to the design of individual office buildings. An exceptional understanding of proportion, balance and aesthetics was key to the success of his design work. Simon’s ability to adapt and grow in a foreign office is certainly one of his strengths. He has an excellent sense of curiosity, backed with a strong ability to produce high-quality work in a calm and focused manner. His professionalism is evident in both the way he approaches and interacts with his coworkers, and his ability to communicate ideas. This demeanor permitted Simon to quickly become a valuable part of our studio, allowing him to take on responsibilities well beyond his years and training. I do believe that any future employer will find they get more from Simon than they might possibly give back. I have Simon penned down as one of the most outstanding student interns and I do recommend him highly for any future undertaking in architecture.
