RINGKØBING K SUSTAINABLE RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN A NATURAL SETTING Type: Commission Location: Ringøbing, Denmark Size: Approx. 18000m2

The aim of this project was to develop 3 residential areas of approximately 40 housing units each and to - within these areas - develop principles that could be used throughout the entire masterplan of Ringkøbing K. By using the unique features of the surrounding landscape as a starting point for the design, the aim has been to create a series of new housing typologies, unique for Ringkøbing K. The layout of the houses responds to and emphasises the different landscape settings. This has been of great importance for the design of different typologies as well as access areas, private outdoor spaces and transport systems.

A city with many different functions and physical intersection provides the best opportunity to share knowledge, create new contacts, to be inspired and learn.

SCIENCE- & BUSINESS PARK

Odense Research and Knowledge Park offers precisely these qualities. Here one finds the intersection between region, city and university that provides the framework around knowledge society life. By placing the whole community to the east you achieve the best possible contact to the infrastructure. An important factor in relation to the area’s sustainability. At the same time is closely connected to the University of Southern Denmark Odense, Killerup village and shopping centre Rosengård and the recreational sports areas and golf courses.

New urban development is concentrated along the new connection from Odense centre

With a ”surgical” operation the existing science park i moved, and becomes the 1st step in the development of a new urban district

If the proposed program is spread over the whole competition area the density becomes very low

By concentrating the urban development to the east, a more sustainable city district with higher density and more urban character is established

By concentrating the urban development a vast landscape area can be preserved

BRØNDBY STRAND TRANSFORMATION AND REGENERATION OF EXISTING HOUSING AREA WINNER OF 1ST PHASE Type: Competition Location: Brøndby Strand, Denmark Size: Approx. 50 ha

Brøndby Strand was built in the beginning of the 1970’s, as one of the last examples of modernist residential areas. The vast area stretches more than 2.5 km, has 2.500 housing units and over 8.000 inhabitants. Many of the principles and qualities of modernistic housing can be found here: ‘park- dwellings’, separation of traffic modes, well proportioned and organised buildings and housing units. At the same time, the area suffers from many problems:, it is not well integrated to the surroundings, the overall layout does not correspond to the way the inhabitants actually move in the area, many of the buildings are run down and not well insulated and there is a general feeling of insecurity. The starting point for this proposal is an appreciation of the good intentions and qualities of the original design. With few and well thought out design interventions the area can be transformed in a radical way. The new design for the area is centred around a new central movement corridor through the area, ‘Strøget’, which connects the different levels and integrates pedestrian, bicycle and car movement.

KILDEDAL -

The aim of this project is to develop a strategy for sustainable urban growth within the Fingerplan, that prevents the city from sprawling, respect the natural and ecological networks and guarantee urban qualities at all stages of the development.

SUSTAINABLE SUBURBANISM

A potential building zone is laid out within a radius of 1000m from the station. From the circular potential building zone, areas of special interest - nature, built structure and infrastructure - are subtracted.

ØRESUND 2040 A SUSTAINABLE VISION AND REGIONAL STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF ØRESUND Type: Open international ideas competition Location: Region of Øresund

The idea of this project is give a visionary and free proposal for the long term physical development of the Øresund region - in a regional, transnational and global perspective. The vision should also strengthen the Øresund Region’s position as a unique metropolis. The point of departure of the project is that the identity of the region of Øresund must emanate from life on its streets and squares. The organization of urban development is described with the metaphor of the castles - as the place where you belong - both figuratively and practical significance. The proposal aims to plan for a network of cities - compact and complex cities, without the complications of urban sprawl. Only if the city’s role and shape rethought, citizens can be convinced that it is better to live close together in the city than to have a large area in the suburbs. Life in the dense city must provide identity - citizenship.

CITY OF TSHWANE MASTERPLAN MASTERPLAN FOR AN AFRICAN CAPITAL OF EXCELLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA Type: Commission Location: Pretoria, South Africa Size: 2000 ha

Over the past 20 years, the City of Tshwane has experienced urban decay, mainly in the form of increased crime rates and lack of urban management, leading to a bad reputation and subsequently lack of investment in he city. The masterplan for the City of Tshwane aims to revitalise the inner city by identifying and encouraging potentials and areas of growth. The new masterplan for the city of Tshwane was commissioned by the city of Tshwane in collaboration with the National Department of Public works. It was carried our over 2 years, and integrated a wide range of services such as masterplanning, infrastrucure, planning, economics , transport, stakeholder engagement and urban management. 5 key areas, in strategic locations, each with specific structure and program, will become catalysts for the new development. The key areas are connected by a continuous landscape element - the ‘ Musanda’. The Musanda combines recreation, infrastructure and transport, and re-integrates areas of the city that are today segregated.

CITY ON THE EDGE

This projects reinterpretes the port as structural and historical heritage. Whereas many port developments in recent times have regarded the sites as Tabula Rasa - the blank slate, our project is based in the historical organization of the industrial harbour, in which the maximum amount of quay was established in order for the ships to be loaded. Warehouses were built along the edge and behind buildings lay infrastructure and parks. With this organization you get all the elements of a ‘good’ city - green and blue within walking distance!

FREDERICIA C DEVELOPMENT OF A FORMER INDUSTRIAL HARBOR AREA

The transformation of this post-industrial area offers a unique potential for the city of Fredericia to reconnect the city to the water, and to create an attractive, active and accessible waterfront for the inhabitants of the city. Rather than a traditional master- plan we propose a exible strategy, combining aspects of people, space and economy, that will guarantee urban qualities at all stages and in all parts of the development process.

- 2nd price in international competition Type: Competition Location: Fredericia Size: 20 ha

A series of new public activities e.g. a food- market, a school and a culture- house, combined with a network of urban spaces - public living- rooms - make out the spine of the strategy. By linking a speciďŹ c public building and a urban space to each of the phases we guarantee both urban quality and economic viability throughout the process.

In the last years the relative part of small apartments in Copenhagen has decreased. Many small one-room apartments have been transformed to fewer larger apartments, and few new ones have been built.

THE LITTLE HOUSE

The plot lies in the northeastern corner of a block, and its closest neighbouring houses are old industry buildings, which are high and around 15 meters deep. As a consequense of this, the apartments are distributed as a tower in the outer corner of the plot, with four apartments RQ HDFK Ă RRU RQH LQ HDFK FRUQHU SHQHWUDWHG E\ D FHQWUDO staircase, a spine. KILDEPARKEN 2020 REVITALISATION OF A RUN DOWN MODERNISTIC HOUSING AREA Type: Comission Location: Aalborg Size: 54 ha

Kildeparken is a modernistic housing area in Aalborg, built in the beginning of the 1970’s. During the past years the evolution of the area has been negative. The buildings are run- down and in desperate need of renovation, while the 1100 almost completely similar apartments and the monotonous outdoor- areas lack the qualities to meet the demands and wishes of Aalborg’s modern- day inhabitants. This has led to a rapid increase in crime and social problems in the area. Kildeparken 2020 combines a plan to renovate the rundown buildings and outdoor areas with an overall and holistic transformation strategy of the area into a more active, attractive and safe neighbourhood. The elements of Kildeparken 2020 are: 1) Lighter and better apartments 2) Different facades and building typologies to create more diversity 3) New and improved infrastructure to connect the area’s isolated enclaves 4) New public buildings and activities to activate and attract people to the area 5) New vegetation and landscape activities
