When confronted with the scale of the Volvo compound, it seems to resemble the scale of a small city. Nevertheless, it is not a city on its own. It can not function separated from the city and gains a number of advantages because of its connection with the city. To put it philosophically; everything is part of a bigger whole, and so is Volvo. A small city that is incorporated in a big city [Ghent].
In the development of a progressive vision for the future, we believe that the relations and interactions between these two scales (smallbig) are essential in the planning- and design process. The Volvosite is huge, and you lose grip on proportion when you enter it for the first time. It seems as an entity on itself, a bubble in the city.
With this book, we did not have the intention to present a readymade solution. The main goal of this publication is to inspire, to express and collect ideas, to evoke new questions and to open up different views/ visions/ paths.
