l’ amour digital collage: a game of signifier and signified 2013
Architecture is deeply social as an act. Our responsibility towards the community is grave. We should not stand aloof. We should have in mind for whom we build.
the city Architecture derives from the city. Cities need us : we must stand critical towards them. We should stop designing and consuming the space greedily. We must set new rules. Alteration, evolution, scalability.
the tradition Architecture is site-specific. Locus : this magic word seems to be suffocating crammed between the “international archetypes”. We should not be afraid of demolishing in order to rebuild. We should not be afraid of the void.
the built and unbuilt Nature is not the built environment's negative space. The dipole built – unbuilt is the quintessence of architecture. We ought to design with wisdom.

We consider Bamiyan’s cultural center to be a symbolic expression of Afghanistan’s new era. The center will act as the cornerstone of the new life, emphasizing on its role as an educational center of the community. This approach is grounded on the unforced integration between people’s practices and philosophy and center’s function. The morphology of the Buddha cliff is integrated in the synthetical process leading us to a more sculptural approach. In the heart of the synthesis, we create a dynamic open space that aims to develop a sense of public discourse and collegiality by engaging everyday practices with crosscultural events during the year. The construction is mainly built with the use of local materials such as colored sand, masonry and stone.

Our architectural approach was a blend of functionalism and symbolism: the deduction of regionalism, the antithesis of formal analogies to docks, the notion of a tower and its metalanguage, the elegy of human need, are some of the most prominent elements. Our composition is a tripartite diagram which has the fish market at its core, framed by a small museum and a small research center which focuses on the Ambracian gulf and fishing. On one hand: stocky, brutal docks and on the other hand: delicate and slender, metal structures.

The proposed museum is a node connecting the urban park with the pedestrian circulation. The ground level of the museum is designed as an open platform connected with the public square in front of it. The existing topography is enhanced by the introduction of a 3m height slope that offers elements of surprise and discovery during the visual perceptions of the passers-by. The terrace of the building is activated by placing the event space and additional functions, like an open-air amphitheater. It is covered by a lightweight steel structure that functions as a unifying element with multifunctional use. The volume of the exhibition spaces appears externally as an imposing element cladded with prefabricated concrete panels that translate the sculptural values of the Bauhaus movement. The division of the volume into distinct sub-volumes reflects the intention of creating distinct thematics under the topoi themes. At the same time, internally the space functions as a unity that can adapt to several scenarios. The internal atrium functions as a bridge facilitating the dialogue between the museums’ permanent collections and the temporary ones.

The proteus project is a proposal for regenerating omonoia district in athens. Athens’ multidimensional character and the contemporary era of constant fluxes, inspired the design of the residential blocks. The ground flour hosts communal amenities for the tenants and the public. The upper part consists of “emotion surfaces”, that is interactive LED surfaces projecting artistic representation of the tenants’ feelings and any type of information they wish to upload. Hence, the building functions as a womb reacting to its users. The plug-in cocoons attach to the wombs’ sockets. variety of set-ups for the socket structure according to each city block’s configuration

Collaborators: Demetra Vogiatzaki, Chrisa Gkolemi Tutors: Demetris Papalexopoulos 2009-2010 A transformative space can accommodate various kinds of designers. The main idea was altering the space’s introverted character. Τhis transformation is achieved through the main facade where the occupants of the studios can communicate their ideas via graffiti or posters. Considering that the building is located in an area which is full of graffiti and posters, people walking near the studios would feel inclined to make a statement by drawing graffiti or putting up posters. Thus, a dialogue between the interior and the exterior space will manifest on the wall.

This project is a complex of rental rooms located at a traditional village, on the island of Samos. It consists of an entrance hall with a reception desk, a restaurant, a pool bar and six residential units, with a total of twenty rooms. The main volume of the complex as well as its circulation follow the linearity of the plot and find their closure near the sea.

A residential complex studies the experience of transitioning from a public to a private space and the meaning of a threshold. Our aim was to induce interaction between the neighbors and to encourage a healthy cohabitation into this concrete ribbon. The ribbon constitutes a big nestle which provides the residents with introversion and privacy. The act of turning one’s back to the city is also a chance to be in a more profound contact with the inside, with one’s neighbors. At the same time, the public passages which cross the site are filtered. The notion of the “human gaze” played a very important role in our design as it shaped all the common spaces and the walls’ openings. A garden is located in the center of our site, following the contemporary need of urban agriculture and repeating housing models of the past.

Inspired by “REGENT ST WINDOWS PROJECT” which takes place in London, and fueled by personal, theoretical studies about heterotopias and especially shop-windows, we tried to find a way to reclaim and reform this timeless space. We designed a bigscale version of a “pinpoint impression toy” for a random shop-window on Regent str. Our aim was to articulate the relationship between the interior and the exterior space by extending its transparent glass screen. It is actually an interactive installation which is touch-operated. It delivers ideas or messages from the inside to the outside, from the shopowner to pedestrians or potential customers, and vise versa. In this way, this heterotopia is brought lif e, obtains s ubs tance and temporality.
"Sixth principle: The last trait of heterotopias is that they have a function in relation to all the space that remains. This function unfolds between two extreme poles. Either their role is to create a space of illusion that exposes every real space, all the sites inside of which human life is partitioned, as still more illusory. Or else, on the contrary, their role is to create a space that is other, another real space, as perfect, as meticulous, as well arranged as ours is messy, ill constructed, and jumbled."
