Heuristic Broken
Usability Defect Description
Recognition rather than recall
The user may dissipate throughout various headers on the home page of the SIAT website, due to the various close correlations on what the user is trying to look for.
Flexibility and Efficiency of Use
There is no advanced / basic type of search filters for the users to use. Everything is compiled together into a list for the user to search through.
This segment of the website should implement an advanced search filter section for the user to narrow down the types of job they would want to look for.
Recognition rather than recall
The user may dissipate throughout
I tried to look for the “forms” section under
You met Bernhard Riecke at a conference in Germany last semester. You are interested in doing your masters degree at SIAT and you want to find out if he will supervise you. Find his contact information, supply a list of 3 research areas Prof. Riecke is interested in, and list 1 project he has done in the past. Task 2 You are looking for a job. Find a game programmer job that has been posted within the last 3 months and advise which company is hiring, how to apply for the job, and when the deadline is/or was. Task 3
Evaluator’s Comments Regarding Defect The user’s intention is to look if Bernhard Riecke would be a supervisor for the postgraduate courses; thus, he/she may hover under the three sections: “About Us”, “People”, “Graduate”.
You are an undergraduate student and you want to do a directed studies course – find the Directed Studies Application Form on the SIAT website.
Task 4 Find the course outline for IAT 380: Sound Design and outline the course objectives.
the various headers such as current undergrad, future undergrad, and resources, because these headers are may all be viable alternatives to what the users may be looking for.
the current undergrad header. Additionally, I didn’t notice there was a “resource” segment on the website, until I get to look at the website more in-depth. The “resources” section should also be labeled as an important section, with the same typeface and font size as the other important sections such as “about us”, “people”, etc.
Visibility of system status
There is no indication at all from the website to the user if he/she has actually clicked or downloaded the form correctly.
A visual feedback provided would be better to notify the user; due to the fact that I actually downloaded the form twice.
Recognition rather than recall
The user wouldn’t be It would be helpful to able to know if the provide the users with a course, “IAT 380” is search filter section. a undergraduate or graduate course; thus, the user would have to look for the course outline in both headers.
Task 5 Post a job on the website
Consistency and Standards
The “career” section is treated as a nonimportant section; thus, the font is smaller and lighter comparing to the other sections, causing the users to have a hard time to notice it.
The headers on the home page of the SIAT website should all be in the same font and color, for consistency and ease of flow for the user’s eyes to navigate throughout the website.

Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors Error Prevention
Usability defect description Looking for previous works lead to 404 Error page Names of faculty members not alphabetical
You are looking for a job. Find a game programmer job that has been posted within the last 3 months and advise which company is hiring, how to apply for the job, and when the deadline is/or was.
Consistency and standards
When browsing through different job postings, many are different in terms of formatting
You are an undergraduate student and you want to do a directed studies course – find the Directed Studies Application Form on the SIAT website.
Flexibility and efficiency of use Help and documentation
Wasn’t intuitive to find directed studies form for undergraduates. Wasn’t under the undergraduate’s tab.
Find the course outline for IAT 380: Sound Design and outline the course objectives.
Consistency and standards
Post a job on the SIAT website.
None apparent
Formatting on the IAT 380 heading from the course outline page was not in sync with the other courses Not available
Evaluator’s comments regarding defect The link leading to the error page should be addressed and either fixed, or removed. For the sorting, I can see that people would like it organized by position, but in this case, having an option to organize alphabetical could have saved time. It’s confusing that at times, some postings show deadlines and some other information that others do not. Should at least have a section for them but have “N/A” or a link to where people can find that info It wasn’t in the FAQ section either so it was trial and error until finding the page with all the forms. Once there, it wasn’t under Undergrad either. The course wasn’t properly aligned so it took a bit more careful looking in the list to spot Personally had not trouble.

Project: Heuristic Evaluation for SIAT Website Evaluator: Alice Chan Task & specific location in task Task 1: Find Bernhard Riecke’s contact info, supply a list of 3 research areas that Prof. Riecke is interested in and list 1 project he has done in the past
Date: January 25, 2012 Heuristic Broken
Usability Defect Description
Evaluator’s Comments Regarding Defect
Flexibility and efficiency of use
There were different tabs giving similar meanings that would confuse the user. “About” – does not contain staff information “People” > “staff” – does not include Prof. information “People” or “People”> “faculty” – finally found Bernhard Riecke’s information.
It would be more efficient if an advanced search function is added so users do not have to find go through all the steps in order to find faculty staff, or simply have the list organize in alphabetical order.
Finding the name was inefficient. Names are not listed in alphabetical order. Task 2: Find a game programmer job that has been posted within the last 3 months and advise which company is hiring, how to apply for the job and when the deadline is/was.
Consistency and standards User Control and Freedom Visibility of system status
Unlike the other tabs, the “career” tab does not show the first option’s page; instead show a link on the left side leaving the user a bit confused and forces users to reselect on the drop down menu instead. It’s not consistent in providing a deadline for application After clicking on ‘industry job board” unable to find job effectively.
It would be better to have a similar list of the left side of the page. A search option for users to find job by category or by date. Provide information in the same format for every posted job.
Task & specific location in task Task 3: Find the Directed Studies Application Form
Heuristic Broken Help and documentation Recognition rather than recall Flexibility and efficiency of use
Usability Defect Description Need to search under different tabs and none of them can direct user to the actual form. Not under the “Undergrad” section. It’s confusing.
Evaluator’s Comments Regarding Defect Could simply put a link in the undergrad section to the form page, or have the resources link more visible. Implement a search function
Once user is in the “Form” button under “Resources” tab need to go through the list of forms in order to locate the application form Task 4: Find the course outline for IAT380 and the outline of the course objectives
Recognition rather than recall User control and freedom Flexibility and efficiency of use
Need to look under both graduate and undergraduate tabs. Need to press on “course outline” in order to get a list of courses available. Course online is only available in the drop down menu.
Provide a link to courses outline would be helpful on the first page of “undergrad”. Provide flexibility in searching for courses. Maybe have different options in viewing courses or have a search function instead of a list.
Inefficient in searching for courses. Can only search in list and specific semesters that offer the course.
Task 5: Post a job on the website
Consistency and standards
Same problem mentioned for task 2: the inconsistency of information that show on the first page that is selected in each tab.
Can provide a link on the first page under Careers to the industry job board.
