ILLUMINATE. COMBATING GENDERBASED VIOLENCE IN THE HAITIAN TENT CAMPS January 2015 Individual final major project 14 weeks

4 5

After an extensive research project on humanitarian aid spanning over 3 months chose to look into combating gender-based violence (GBV) as my final major project. Haiti in particular has a history of GBV that has only worsened since the 2010 earthquake, particularly in the tent camps set up for the victims.

RESEARCH

CURRENTLY 170,000 PEOPLE RESIDING IN TENT CAMPS

THE RAPE RATE IN THE CAMPS IS 20 TIMES HIGHER THAN THE REST OF THE COUNTRY

OF HOUSEHOLDS HAVE HAD AT LEAST ONE MEMBER SUFFER SEXUAL VIOLENCE BETWEEN 2010 - 2012

I have been working closely with a grassroots Haitian organisation known as KOFAVIV (commission of women victims for victims of gender-based violence). I was lucky enough to make contact with Malya Villard the founder of the group and probably knows more about it than anyone else in the world. She supplied me with extremely valuable insights.

I created a 1:10 scale model of the light design to test out the system of putting the light parts together after being shipped in the metal gabion. It was rapid prototyped using selective laser sintering.

Empty the contents of the gabion the light is shipped in.

Dig a hole in which to completely submerge the gabion and place it inside.

Hammer the 4 securing spikes into the ground in the center then put the battery box inside.

Pull battery cables through battery box slot and through the entire first pole

Fill the gabion with rubble, close and lock the lid and then slide the rest of the structure into place.

Connect solar wiring to the solar panel and adjust the solar bracket to face south and bolt together with t-junction.

Pull light wiring through the t-junction, and arm pieces and connect to the light head. Extend the solar wiring above t-junction and secure poles.

Connect the power supply cabling up in pole three, pull the solar and light wiring through poles 2, 3, 4, 5 and secure them together.

BOTTLE BUGS RSA 2015 STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS - FAIR PLAY BRIEF September 2014 Individual fourth year project 6 weeks

14 15

I chose to enter the ‘Fair Play’ brief in the 2015 student design awards. I focused my project on trying to get kids outside and interacting with insects. Due to recent changes in the school curriculum teachers and parents need new methods to help children interact and learn about insects.

RESEARCH

“CHILDREN LOVE BEING OUTSIDE, AND IT’S THE BEST WAY TO LEARN” - Mr Sullivan teacher of 25 years

“Many of these children will remember this experience of learning in nature for the rest of their lives and will go on to have a lasting effect.”

- Educational coordinator of a local city farm

16 17

“Involving all the senses when outside leads to improved learning and concentration whilst simultaneously helping meet the levels of physical activity that children need.” - Eco-coordinator at Mindstretchers; outdoor kindergarten creators

“Playing outside can benefit mental well-being and form a connection to nature which many children lack nowadays.”

- Mr Sullivan teacher of 25 years

DEVELOPMENT

These are some of the inital sketches for a cheap, upcycled bug box system that works alongside a journal, allowing children to tailor each habitat to a certain insect. The bottles can be made into a modular farm using the connectors provided.

BOTTLE BUGS, CREATING INSECT HABITATS OUT OF WASTE MATERIALS

THE CONNECTORS These are the connectors used to link the bottles or clear tubing. There are multiple types to be more versatile so users can create whatever system they like. The key element with these connectors is that the threads imitating the thread can tighten independently of the tubing, bottle or connector meaning the habitat remains undisturbed.

DOUBLE THREAD CONNECTOR

This is made up of a small piece of straight tubing with 2 exterior threads on either end, typically used to extend the tubing or connect tubing to a 3 way connector

MIXED CONNECTOR

This is made up of a small piece of straight tubing with 1 interior thread and 1 exterior thread at either end, making it the most versatile connector

DOUBLE CAP CONNECTOR

This is made up of a small piece of straight tubing with 2 interior threads on either end similar to those found on the end of the tubing

3-WAY-CONNECTOR

This is made up of three straight lengths of tubing connected in the middle, all with an interior connector on the end. Allowing the tubing system to branch off to multiple bottles

CLOCK PIANO WEB & GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN AT HINTS LTD. April 2014 Summer internship 4 months

22 23

I undertook an internship at Hints ltd. to help kick of their latest project ClockPiano. A new instrument for the 21st Century.

THE IDEA Hints Ltd is currently working on a product called ClockPiano, a new musical instrument for the 21st century designed to help users to learn, play and share music through social media. It is currently digitally based but an app is currently underway. As it stands the key features of the ClockPiano are as follows: - A web-based touch screen interface for playing music. - A circular design with 12 segments (much like a clock face) that represent the chromatic scale (think of the keys forming one octave one a piano). - Each segment can have several other sections separated by concentric circles (much like a dart board) that represent another octave; up to ten octaves can be represented at one time. - Uses a MIDI engine which in turn makes sounds on the MIDI device in your computer, smart phone or tablet and can play any of the instruments contained. - Allows layering of sounds and can have a split voice to play different instruments. - Your performances can be recorded and compressed into a text format known as a cpZip code allowing it to be tweeted or sent via Facebook to others.

KETTLE FOR LIFE DESIGNING A KETTLE TO LAST 30+ YEARS - FOR VISITING PROFESSOR ADRIAN STOKES February 2014 Group third year project 6 weeks

26 27

Many modern kettles are considered almost throw away items. They have a large number of breakable parts and can be very costly to fix. As a group we were set with the task of creating a design that would last 30-50 years to counter this wasteful trend and promote the circular economy. This brief was give to us by the “Salon” division of ASA design led by Adrian Stokes.

We looked at removing breakable components and making it easy to repair. The kettle is can be used on either an induction hob or any normal kitchen hob making it versatile and still usable when being repaired. The product when completed and a suitable framework set up is predicted to retail at around £60 while only costing around £14.07 to manufacture on a scale of 50,000 units.

MEAL SPACE INVESTIGATING AND DESIGNING ‘NEW VALUE’ FOOD BASED SPACES FOR PHILLIPS January 2014 Group third year project 4 weeks

32 33

This project was created alongside Philips to investigate and create food based spaces by looking at other countries’ food cultures. Our group chose to look at South Korea as they still have a rich food culture.

TRENDS & INSIGHTS BBALI BBALI - HURRY HURRY

40% of young Koreans cook for themselves

While 50% have food cooked by their mother

Everyday activities are performed as quickly as possible. It is common for South Koreans to meet buses in the middle of the road, rather than wait for it to pull into the stop.

LOCALLY SOURCED, ORGANIC FOOD

34% live with their family. 64% live independently

40 % went out to eat at least once a week

50% go out to eat more than 3 times a week

68% eat instant food 1-3 times a week

Traditional South Korean meals are reliant on healthy, local produce. Incoming western foods are creating lots of health issues.

FAST FOOD In the west, there is a stigma that fast food is unhealthy. This is not wholly true in South Korea e.g. Korean sushi is a popular, convenient and healthy option

BRAND IDENTITY Brands that display a cool, fashionable image are far more appealing to young Korean consumers e.g.. Starbucks

Just under half eat breakfast every morning

SOCIALISING

34 35

However just over 50% eat breakfast less than 5 days a week

Socialising is ingrained in South Korean culture and tradition. Workplaces go out to eat regularly, known as Hoesik, Dishes are shared between large groups.

DEVELOPMENT

Our solution was Philips meal space. Open eating spaces that can be distributed around cities. Large groups of colleagues, families and friends can order groceries to be delivered, prepare, cook and eat meals in the Philips Meal Spaces using Philips appliances. Meal Spaces are ideal for colleagues going out to eat after work regularly and socialising through food all while experiencing the lastest Philips culinary technology and lighting.
