DESCRIPTION The village of Novlaesa is nestled in the mountains of Cenischia Valley in the Italians Alps. The context we have to deal with in this project is rich of great natural landscapes and it has a great social and historical value due to the strategic position for the crossing of the Alps in the past centuries. In the first part of the workshop we developed an urban scale possible solution for the regeneration of the village, while in the second part we deepen the design of a small area in the northern part of Novalesa. Our design proposal is composed by six two-storey buildings arranged around a public courtyard that refer to the traditional yard of the farmers. The courtyard is enclosed on four sides by shops and craft workshops located in a single ground floor made of concrete. Above the concrete ground floor rise the six residential buildings. The ground floor is interrupted in four points to allow an easy access to the courtyard, while the open spaces between the six residential buildings of the second floor frame each a different landmark of the context, in order to emphasize and connect them with the project. The residential buildings are made of load-bearing x-lam wood panels covered in black corrugated panels. The covering are gambled roofs with gutter lines at different heights in order to evoke the irregular shape of mountains, while the size and proportion of the new constructions follow that of the buildings around them.

DESCRIPTION This project was developed in two different workshops and in two different academic years. During the first year we have defined the masterplan of the area, basing our proposal on several analysis (historical analysis, acoustic analysis, study of shading and sun-path diagrams) with the help of the software Autodesk Ecotect. The masterplan takes the shape of a series of rectangular blocks recalling the regular urban grid of Turin, “cut” by diagonal paths that connect focal points. The heights of the buildings vary to allow the best solar irradiation for all the apartments. Afterwards we focused on the design of a single building of the masterplan, taking into account its technical performance. We based the stratigraphies of all the building components on calculations performed by the software Echo 6 and Termolog to ensure compliance with the acoustic and thermal insulation standards. We decided to use several active and passive bioclimatic strategies to minimize the building’s energy requirement: the recycle of rainwater and wastewater, thermal and photovoltaic solar panels, large windows with solar shading and solar greenhouses on the south side and small windows on the north side. The building has also been designed in accordance with the ITHACA guidelines for the assessment of the energy consumption and environmental sustainability level. The second year we designed the heating and the cooling system of the building consisting in a mixed water-air system. In addition to that we developed an innovative textile shading system and we evaluated the sustainability of the building materials used, by examining the life cycle, from collection to disposal.

DESCRIPTION The object of this architectural restoration workshop was the former psychiatric hospital of Racconigi, and in particular the main building of the complex, the Chiarugi Pavillion (1790-92; 1825-29). Our work followed the main steps of a typical restoration project: the historical analysis, the metric survey, the graphic representation of the survey (both CAD and pencil drawings), the analysis of degradation and material consistency, the proposal of the conservation works and the new design for the future reuse of the building. The metric survey was carried out only on the facade of the building, because the interiors are unsafe for potential structural collapses. It was executed through different techniques: on site with measuring tape and sketches, photogrammetry and LIDAR survey. The various results were compared with each other to have a greater awareness of the limits and strengths of each system. In the last phase we proposed new functions for the Chiarugi Pavillion chosen through an investigation of the city’s lacks and opportunities. We decided to integrate some public functions (library, a multipurpose hall) with several co-working office spaces. It would be the second co-working space in the whole Piedmont, making Racconigi a focal point for business in a regional scale. In order to define the spaces needed for the new functions of the buildings, we designed box structures made of colored plasterboards according to the principles of recognition, reversibility and minimal intervention to be arranged inside the wide historical halls. We had also paid particular attention to the safety and design of adequate evacuation routes.

DESCRIPTION The project is located in Turin’s suburb, in an area that has many social and physical problems as a reflection of a lack of architectural and urban design quality. For this reason the area was recently involved in several interventions of urban regeneration promoted by municipal funding and thanks to the direct involvement of the inhabitants. Our work lay foundations in these considerations and aimed to be a new reference element that could act as a positive motor of growth for the neighborhood. In this perspective we have designed a new large square, completely pedestrian and partly lowered by 5 meters from street level with an intricate set of stairs, ramps and resting areas. The design is visually strong and dynamic and it try to breaks with the past and the context. It wants to stimulate the encounter between persons thanks to the convex shape, the many places where to sit and the different commercial activities, as an underground supermarket. We have designed also a small residential area with four buildings characterized by an outer shell in white fiber cement panels. Their shape recall the typical piedmont farmstead. The design of the master plan was also influenced by choices based on economic analysis of costs and revenues, estimating construction costs and studying various future scenarios of sale or rental of premises in order to understand the feasibility and profitability of the intervention.

DESCRIPTION This work is the result of the “Innovative building envelope” workshop, a collaboration between Polito and AGC Flat Glass Italy. We were asked to design a new high-performance building envelope for the headquarters of the Piedmont regional offices, a skyscraper in Turin designed by Studio Fuksas. Our proposal intends to maintain the current glazed curtain wall protected from the excessive solar radiation with a new dynamic sun-shading structure. The shading elements have the possibility to open and close as an “umbrella” through pistons controlled automatically by sensors and a central computer. They close if the facade is in shade and during the winter days, while they open up to cover the building if hit by the sunlight. The elements are made of perforated panels that allow natural illumination and the outside view even when the sun-shading is open. The four elevations of the building have different distributions of the shading system depending on the actual demand for shading. The South elevation is fully screened excepted some hexagonal solar greenhouses . The East elevation have sunshading elements only where necessary, so just in front of the conference rooms already expected in the original project in order to maintain the irregular “cuts” planned by Studio Fuksas. The North elevation presents no sun-shading elements but a more insulating double glazed skin. The West elevation is completely screened.

DESCRIPTION This work is the result of the Joint Study 2015, an academic partnership between the Tsinghua University of Beijing and the Polytechnic of Turin, which allows Italian and Chinese students to work together and get in touch with different knowledge and culture. In March 2015 the work took place in Beijing with the Chinese counterparts, and later the work continued independently in the respective countries. The theme of collaboration has been the Beijing Winter Olympics of 2022. Specifically the work at first focused on the planning of one of the three planned Olympic villages, the Taizicheng one, in the mountains north of Beijing. The village will house 2,640 people during the Olympics, and will become the center of the future development plan of winter sports in China. We focused on the definition of some key elements of our proposed masterplan developed in China: the high speed train station which will connect Beijing and Taizicheng in 2022, the pedestrian footbridge connecting the station to the Olympic village and the two public buildings at the entrance of the village. We get inspired by the incredible rich and profound Chinese architecture culture, trying to accomplish a project idea able to respects the traditions and the new needs. Crucial along with the design phase, it was the depth study and analysis of the Chinese history and culture, as well as the present situation of Chinese architecture, with a focus on mountain issues and winter sports. I was particularly interested in the rural architecture and how it is driving a group of new Chinese architects to revalue its spirit and main elements and use it as fundament of their contemporary projects.
