Als u het Centraal Station uitloopt krijgt u direct met het intrigerende karakter van deze stad te maken. Architectuur, design, licht dat op bijzondere manieren in het dagelijkse leven is opgenomen, cultuur en innovatie. Niets is doorsnee in deze stad. was able to grow as a ‘Philips town’. The monumental industrial buildings have gotten a new destination. From living and workspaces to grand cafes and restaurants, theaters, cultural centers and museums. It goes without saying that new buildings in Eindhoven have a fascinating architectural unpredictability. New areas that are already, or are going to be developed, ooze all the same unique allure which is so typical for Eindhoven. Like a restaurant where you cannot just eat, but also buy vintage stuff. Where students from the famous Design Academy designed the furniture and other things. Large Philips compounds which are now open to the public are the incubators where an interesting mix of design, culture and art, living and working takes place. But, nature is also never far away in Eindhoven. Adjacent to the center you will find the Genneper Parken, a piece of genuine farmland with cows, pastures, a farmhouse, an outdoor museum and trails. The country version of Central Park. Without a doubt you’ll want to see the Philips Stadium and the DAF Museum (map B nr. 7) where astonishment and admiration are unavoidable. All that exists nowadays could only be made possible because of that one tiny Philips light bulb factory in 1891, which has been turned into a museum. Eindhoven takes great pride in her origins which evolved around innovation, techniques and design. And to this day this still defines Eindhoven and all she does and represents. WANDELROUTE / WALKING ROUTE Begin uw wandeling bij de Blob, op het 18 Septemberplein. Het ontwerp is zonder meer indrukwekkend te noemen. Verderop aan de Emmasingel treft u Philips erfgoed aan. Als u met de bocht naar links gaat komt u terecht in een levendige en pittoreske wijk, De Bergen. Via de Bergstraat loopt u over de Wal richting het Van Abbemuseum, een vooruitstrevend internationaal museum voor moderne kunst. Hier kunt u lunchen aan de Dommel. Vervolgens wandelt u richting het designhart van de binnenstad, het Catharina Kwartier. Daar treft u de Smalle Haven: een restaurant, ontmoetingsplek en vintage winkel in één. Eindig uw wandeling met een heerlijk kopje koffie in het stijlvolle grand-café restaurant Meneer Frits op de Markt! Start your walk at the Blob on the 18 Septemberplein. Following the curve round to the left takes you to a lively and picturesque district, The Bergen. Walk along the Bergstraat and the Wal towards the Van Abbemuseum, a prominent international museum of modern art. Here you can enjoy lunch on the banks of the river Dommel. Continue towards the design centre of the city, the Catharina Quarter. This is home to the Smalle Haven: a restaurant, meeting place and vintage shop in one. Het Philips Stadion is de thuisbasis van de grootste trots van heel Eindhoven, voetbalclub PSV. It is the new creative heart of Eindhoven, teeming with inspiration every hour of every day. Strijp-S is the place to be. First there’s the new ‘Gate house’ where a mega-model and a giant iPad explain the developments planned for the coming years as well as what there is to see here and now. Perhaps you’ll choose the Klokgebouw, home to artists and young businesses from the creative and cultural industries. The imposing events halls on the ground floor have housed festivals like STRP, Extrema and Dutch Design Week, attracting a multitude of visitors from far outside the Dutch borders. You can also take a look round the corner at PopEi, home of Rock City (and with a lovely terrace!). And then on to Monk Bouldergym where there’s every chance a national or international competition is taking place. If not you could give it a try yourself! Het Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is een van de meest toonaangevende musea voor hedendaagse kunst in Europa. Het museum heeft een uitgebreide internationale collectie van ruim 2700 kunstwerken, waaronder sleutelwerken van Lissitzky, Picasso, Kokoschka, Chagall, Beuys, McCarthy, Daniëls en Körmeling. Openheid, gastvrijheid en kennisuitwisseling zijn voor het Van Abbemuseum van groot belang, maar bovenal wil het van Abbemuseum zijn bezoekers prikkelen en over belangrijke onderwerpen laten nadenken. The Catharina Quarter begins at the like-named square and is as much a shopping area as a residential district with contemporary architecture. It is home to unique shops where you can find a mixture of modern jewellery, shoes, dance-clothing and speciality coffee. Design is also well represented here thanks to the Smalle Haven, which is a restaurant, meeting place and vintage store in one, located on the west side of the street. There is also a unique design shop on the other side of the street, alongside the city park. This district, known as the future design spot of Eindhoven, is constantly developing. Watch this space!

Four of the five nightlife areas of Eindhoven offer a vast choice to everybody’s taste. Genuine Brabant Glamour is to be found in De Bergen where most diners and restaurants have back gardens. The Wilhelminaplein harbors several highly appraised restaurants for the connoisseur and at the Markt (map B nr. 52) it will be difficult to choose between the restaurants and grand cafes with attractive outdoor terraces. Het uitgaansleven in Eindhoven is tot Kunst verheven. Voor elke leeftijdsgroep en smaak zijn er bars, cafés en kroegen te vinden. De Bergen is meer voor de yuppen; 30-plussers die aan de borrel gaan na werktijd en uiteindelijk op de dansvloer van een grand café eindigen. Het Stratumseind is thuisbasis voor de uitgaande jeugd. Het is de langste kroegenstraat van Nederland: 225 meter lang met meer dan 50 cafés die vaak dag en nacht open zijn.
