AGAF – Association of Young Architects - Ferrara Six original members, with shared values and objectives, established the no profit association, Young Architects of Ferrara district, in November 2004. The association main purpose is to promote the architectural culture development among young architects towards a number of events such as exhibitions, meetings and workshops; this organisation is founded on the belief that the knowledge and the study of “design schools” other than the Italian one, could contribute to enrich the common cultural heritage and open new horizons for architectural design.

NEW NORWEGIAN ARCHITECTS
“NEW NORWEGIAN ARCHITECTS” EXHIBITION
THIS EXHIBITION is the first of a number of events that aim at promoting the knowledge and proposing topics of discussion about the new European generation of architects. Due to this, the will to address our attention to the North European Countries, particularly to Norway, where the attention is already focused on new young architects, who are writing an innovative page in recent architecture history. Coming from a consolidated tradition, sealed by the work of Sverre Fehn and carried on by the international success of Snøetta studio, Norwegian architecture is arousing more and more interest, contributing to keep the attention focused on northern Europe, as in recent years, when Dutch architecture was privileged. The aim of this itinerant exhibition, which will be held in Ferrara for two weeks, is to illustrate the main aspects of current Norwegian design. The six chosen firms are the ones which have best represented this cultural movement in recent years. Their projects comprise all planning aspects, from urban planning to single object design and embrace, often in a peculiar way, different fields such as the social and the environmental ones. The common denominator is a high quality architecture, somehow innovative and, above all, respectful towards both landscape and envirenment. The selected firms offered to activily take part in the event designing themselves the drawing layout. The selected firms, formed by architects slightly over 30, anyway under 40, are: 3RW arkitekter BRENDELAND & KRISTOFFERSEN CODE arkitektur AS HELEN & HARD NATAAS arkitektur TOMMIE WILHELMSEN Despite the young age, the selected firms are already well known to the international public, as they have been all decorated with several awards and recognitions both in their country and abroad; as they have been published and displayed in several exhibitions and they have represented Norway at the Biennale of Venice 2000 and 2006 and at the Taiwan Exposition 2005.

The office 3RW architects was established in the fall 1999 as a young and independent office. Since then 3RW architects have been working with a wide variety of projects and clients. At the moment we are engaged in projects expanding from singular housing in privat context, to consulting the Norwegian Ministry of Defence in developing new strategic concepts for their properties. The philosophy 3RW architects focuses on architecture as a tool for investigating social relation ships within our society. We consider ourselves as a network-orientated company since it is our opinion that creating architecture, creating the framework of a dynamic socity, is too big a task to be handled inside an office of architecture alone. Therefore we engage in many cooperative projects along with artists, scientists, anthropologists, geographers, scenographers and writers, in order to be a proper participant in the discussion of our surroundings. All members of the office are also teaching at the Bergen School of Architecture, beside other schooles of architecture in Norway and abroad.
3RW architects have participated in the Venice Biennale 2001 and the Havanna Biennale 2001 beside other national exhibitions of contemporary architecture. Members of 3RW architects have recived the AR+D award, overall winner in the Architectural Review + D-Line Design price - 1999 and the Ruth & Ralph Erskine prize - 1997. Starting an office: The office was established in November 2002 in Trondheim after we won the first prize in the competition for the Svartlamoen housing project in Trondheim. In Norway, as in the rest of Europe, there are many obstacles to pass for young architects before they are allowed to design a building on their own. Winning this competition gave us the possibility to build. We quit our jobs, moved to Trondheim and set up our own office there. Design approach: 1. Close collaboration with all the persons involved in the building process: Client, engineers, researchers, authorities, public opinion, producers, contractor, craftsmen, etc. 2. Understanding of urban and social context. 3. Research driven design work. 4. Confronting the aesthetic of sustainable buildings. Projects: • Low cost sustainable appartment block at Svartlamoen in Trondheim. 1 prize competition. Completed April 2005. • Cabin. Invalidenstraße, Berlin. May 2005. • Housing for coal miner families on Svalbard. Ongoing. Construction starting autumn 2006. • Kindergarten at Svartlamoen in Trondheim. Ongoing. Construction starting autumn 2006. • Three villa projects. Ongoing. • Weekend residence for photographer. Ongoing. • Case study cabin. Prizes: Young Norwegian designers of the year 2005 Norwegian Architectural Association prize for young architects 2005 RIBA and Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Awards 2005. Commended project.

Code has won a number of national and international architecture competitions. The portfolio includes private residences, office buildings, schools, hotels, helicopter bases and a number of urban development projects. Current ventures include residential housing in Bergen, Tromsø, Skedsmo, Hokksund and Oslo, and a cafeteria/mess hall for soldiers and noncommissioned officers at Madla in Stavanger. Code’s work has been shown at exhibits in Oslo, Hamburg, London and New York among other places. #1 We create: Our work includes a certain consciousness for culture, landscape, politics, regulations, economics, growth, erasure, textures, program-patterns and the coexistence of all the above. #2 We try to: Strengthen the possibility of converting obstacles into potentials and preselect the variety of forces that shall attack and formulate possible futures. Our methods in use tries to simplify and crystallize existing and generated complexity into operable strategies for development and architectural design. #3 We care: The programmatic ambition is to investigate and identify the complexity of any given or framed force that effects or defects the situation. To challenge any issue, topic or project we try to force visionary ideas with the reality and resistance of any existing site. #4 We integrate: As an additional program to improve the office we are continuously running several self initiated research projects networking supportive cultural domains. #5 We work: The span of work-approach range from major strategies for urban planning, to minor methods of opportunistic infiltration. It is essential that directions (concepts) are triggered by chosen site-specific forces, and that they represent contemporary interest for architectural program and conceptual design. We are constantly trying to be proactive according to summit and skills required for the effective realization of any solvable project.

Helen & Hard was founded in 1996 by Architect Siv Helene Stangeland and Dipl. Ing. Reinhard Kropf. Today, the company has a youthful staff of 10 drawn from different countries. The firm works with interior design, architecture and urban design projects, and is located in Stavanger on the west coast of Norway. Methods and intentions In their work, H&H explore alternative operational and production methods by means of the appraisal and integration of local resources. This includes work within the timber building heritage as well as the specialized resource pools related to

the offshore oil production industry in Stavanger. H&H are also interested in using this potential for form-generation and the self-organization inherent in the work process itself by, among other things, enhancing the degree of interaction with participating parties. In addition to the ecological and economic benefits of resource management, the driving force behind this emphasis is to put the prejudicial capital-based and bureaucratic control into perspective. In a “compost-modern era, the architect is able to apply advanced recycling techniques by which products, knowledge and resources are redefined and transformed within new contexts. Awards and publications: H&H has won the “Norsk Form” Award for Young Designers in 2001 and “The Award for Young Norwegian Architects” in 2004. Publications include international design magazines such as A+U, De Arcitect, Blueprint and Domus. In the fall of 2005 H&H had an exclusive exhibition in Galleri d´ Architecture in Paris. Major work Highlights of some of H&H`s projects are: A pair of dwelling houses in Stavanger’s citycenter (1), a cafe and bakery within the reuse of an old log-construction (2), a lodge on the Pulpit Rock in massive wood (3), the recycling of container-dwellings for workers into five flats and ateliers (4), new appartment blocks in Bjergsted (5) and a public square with the theme:“Offshore culture” in front of the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Fields of activity: offshore-culture - The synergetic exchange between the offshore oil industry and architecture. One of the most urgent challenges facing the Norwegian oil industry is the future recycling of its material and knowledge-related assets. H&H has worked on several recycling projects that has put structures now discarded by the oil industry into reuse. They are all studies about the possible relationships between the uniqueness of both the material and knowledge bases used in the offshore oil industry and its transfer value to architecture and urban development. SQUATTING -recycling and transforming existing buildings In several of our projects we convinced the client to recycle existing buildings instead of demolishing them. Preserving these ressources stipulates a method of liberation from the hierarchical posturing and valuation executed by the market and the historians of architecture. It is here that we begin to achieve the extended sensibility for the sometimes forgotten qualities of atmospheric complexity, vernacular expression, linguistic subtlety and research

bi-products. These qualities become for us the raw material for transforming and recapturing existing structures into “enchanted material”. Process Design-new working processes and forms of interaction. These projects intend to leave the concept of identity and the ideal in order to explore the manifold issue of architecture as a relational space. In this space identities or visions never exist a priori but are constantly changing products of rhetoric and practical interaction among the parties involved. This heterogeneity opens up various possibilities of solutions which leads to more flexibility and sustainability in the designing process. Vernacular -re-interpretation and redesign of the wooden heritage center of Stavanger. Several of our realized projects in the heritage center of Stavanger have explored methods to both include and cross-fertilize specific local resources. We wished to free ourselves from the dichotomy of preservation concerns and the industrial-modernistic ideals of newness which have lead to both unreflected building demolition and city expansion. Rather, to think preservation and new development as an intertwined potential for architectural invention. Housing -development of new urban transformation areas. The challenge of several realized housing projects lay in developing robust and flexible design methods that allow

us to draw on the intensive and highly pitched market situation, yet safeguards our creative “lebensraum”. With this in mind two development methods arise: The first is the massing, orientation and organization of the program in order to optimalize the living qualities of the habitat. The second is taping into the dreams, desires and passions of the involved elements. BIOTOP-sustainable methods and interventions in nature and the cultural landscape. This project group involves research and exploration within site specific sustainibility and a sensitivity for the architecture of the sourrounding landscape, biotops and climate. Unlike a traditional structure or discursive, this architecture will arise in dialogue with the habitat, to ‘live and breathe’ in response to its site. The intention in these projects is to blur the clear dichotomy between architecture and nature and explore a manifold interface between territorial identities and specific programmatic demands.
