The Laureus Regatta/Panerai Trophy
Sponsored by Officine Panerai and Mercedes-Benz, the Laureus Regatta/Panerai Trophy is one of the high-profile sports events staged in the lead-up to the Awards ceremony. It is competed for over two days and is a contest between eight Nautor Swans, which are among the most distinguished high-performance sailing yachts of the high seas. They are all traditionally steered by skippers of international reputation, including helmsmen who have taken part in the America’s Cup in New Zealand. In the Laureus Regatta/Panerai Trophy there are the same competition rules as in the most prestigious sailing race in the world. On the first day, each team is opposed to the other seven boats. Each victory scores one point. On the second day, the four boats with the highest scores move to the semi-final, where the skipper with the highest score chooses his opponent. In each semi-final, the first skipper to score three victories will take part in the final. In the final the first skipper to win three victories will be judged the overall winner. Since 2002 the regatta has been dedicated to Sir Peter Blake, one of the greatest sailors who died tragically in 2001 after being attacked by pirates on a sailing expedition to the Amazon.

Laureus Spor for Good Foundation
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was set up to promote the use of sport as a tool for social change. Its work focuses on helping young people overcome poverty, homelessness, war, violence, drug abuse, discrimination and AIDS. To achieve this goal, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation supports 21 projects worldwide, a number of which is growing each year. It is the fundamental belief of the Foundation that the interplay of the rewards of participation, the spur of competition and the requirement for cooperation that sport provides produce an irresisitible force for progressive social change. Members of the Laureus World Sports Academy have volunteered their services in this cause as global ambassadors, visiting projects to encourage young people to participate in sport and to draw public attention to their plight. Since its formation, the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has influenced the lives of over 100,000 young people.
