RADIOMIR

Radiomir In the mid-1930s the Panerai workshops in Florence received a commission from the Navy to develop a water-resistant watch that was also shock-resistant and with an easy-readable dial that could be visible under water. The first prototype of the Panerai Radiomir was delivered in 1936; it successfully passed several demanding tests which it underwent after being directly compared with watches of similar technical characteristics produced by important Swiss brands. In 1938 the first production Radiomir watches were delivered to the Italian frogmen commandos. The name Radiomir was derived from radium, the substance used to obtain the luminescence of the indexes and Arabic numerals of the dial. Another feature of the Radiomir was its large case with the characteristic cushion-shape, which was very fashionable in that period. Its screw-down back and winding crown ensured complete resistance to water and dust. The wide greased strap, extra large in size, was designed to be worn over the diving suit. Born on the demand of the men in uniform, the Panerai Radiomir is recognized as the first real military divers’ watch.
