ONCE UPON A PANDEMIC
A STORY OF MOSQUE AS HAVEN FOR THE PEOPLE
01. STORY OF MOSQUE AS HAVEN FOR THE PEOPLE THRIVING IN PANDEMIC
The rapid progress of the Covid-19 pandemic has led us to re-evaluate the importance of our daily living environment. The religious world in all traditions responses to natural disasters in the forms of offering social support and conduct in the community.
However, it is noted that after a year of the deadly pandemic, most of the architecture design of existing mosques in Malaysia are not able to provide comprehensive social support to serve as pandemic shelters during Covid-19 outbreak, even though mosques are found located in just around every corner of the towns and cities.
The design direction is to reinforce the forgotten roles and transforms them into a living, dynamic and social friendly institution and platforms, where a refuge albeit temporarily during the time of natural pandemic disasters is forged. It serves to act as a pilot project that hopefully will encourage other mosques would follow suit upon its successful implementation.
The word “Haven“ in Cambridge dictionary refers to “A Place of Peace”, “A Refuge”. It refers to a place where people look for, when there is darkness, like pandemic. A homonym of Haven is “Heaven”. Both words sound alike and their respective meanings are fully relevant to the mosque, divine, and pandemic. That is, mosque as “Haven” to provide social aids when there is pandemic; At the same time, mosque as “Heaven” to celebrate social interactions and connection to continue the good deeds when the pandemic is over
The project direction is to discuss how the divine (i.e the hidden hand) take care of his people, through architecture as a medium. How people dialogue with the divine through urban, spaces, programmes, light and sound in referencing and inspired by the quran teaching.
SCIENTIFIC WORLD
The scientific community responds to the pandemic through research and development of vaccines, quarantining infected patients, implementing social distancing policies, promoting mask-wearing and protective shields, and sanitizing living spaces and physical bodies to combat the virus. These efforts are rooted in science and represent a coordinated response from the scientific community.
RELIGIOUS WORLD
Traditionally, the religious world has always stood with humanity during natural disasters. So, how did the religious world respond to the pandemic?
RESPONSES OF RELIGIOUS THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY
Mother Theresa taking care of the patients whom carries the communicable diseases, as well as abandone children. of scale. This act is viewed as bleaching of myriad of characters, and a loss of rich experience.
In 1980, India faced a severe drought. The lack of food causes many people to suffer from starving. Mosque collected donated food and feed the local community to push through from the difficulty.
Many residents in India loses their beloved home during the eathquake happened in India. Many become homeless overnight, their home, bed and everything are destroyed. In the time of emergency, Mosque stood out and offered homeless warm bed and shelter.
Indonesia is also a country where the majority is muslim. Mosque becomes a places for gathering during normal time, and place for emergency during critical time. In time of emergency like severe flood, Mosque offers daily nessesity for local community.
In Malaysia, Mosques are closed in order to protect people from getting covid. However, thoughout the history, we see Religious World has made critical contribution in times of emergency. This helps us to ask, what can religious world do in time of pandemic.
