Roger Hurn used to be a teacher in an inner-city school and found that one of the best ways to survive was to tell stories with cliffhanger endings – just like in the Spook Squad – Adventures Too Scary for Boys series. During the festival, reading from The Man Who Couldn’t Lose, Gladiator School and Death Comes to Call, Roger will transport you to exciting times long gone by. Finally, with Once There Were Lions you will learn of the life of the children who were evacuated from South East London at the start of the Second World War.
Originally from Ballycastle, Ireland – a stone’s throw away from The Giants Causeway, John McCambridge grew up immersed in the myths and legends of Ulster. Characters such as Finn McCool and the stories of the Wee Folk influenced his desire to become a fantasy Illustrator. Besides working on video games, John also works as an illustrator for publishers. Best-selling author Karen McCombie writes her books either in Office no.1 (her weeny back bedroom) or Office no. 2 (the cafe in her local garden centre). Office no. 2 is her favourite, as there’s not a lot of cake in Office no. 1. A million of her books have been sold around the world, and she’s written more than 70, including novels Life According To Alice B. Lovely, The Year of Big Dreams and her newest, Angels Next Door, plus the hugely popular You, Me and Thing series for younger readers.
Dave Shelton is rather an accidental writer. He moved to Cambridge to study Illustration, but earned a living working in a bookshop, until he started drawing the comic strip Good Dog, Bad Dog. This led to the creation of his debut novel A Boy and a Bear in a Boat, which won the Branford Boase Award in 2013. Dave lives in Cambridge with his partner, Pam, and her daughter, His next book will be Thirteen Chairs, a collection of ghost stories. It is very nearly finished (honest)!
