THE CHANTING OF MOURNING Interactive application of singing sand and funeral academic advisor: Waylen,2020,spring

Qatar, an Arab country in West Asia, has 90% of foreign population, which has led to complex and diverse domestic religions, as well as inconvenience to outlanders due to requirements on funeral forms required by religious beliefs. The project is inspired by the natural phenomenon of Sounding Sand Dune existing in Doha, 40 kilometers southwest of the Crescent Desert. The project provides a funeral ceremony to resolve the contradiction between Qatar’s religion and society through the resonance of sounding sand and human voice.

existing condition

Religion & funeral

Qatar has the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the world with a large number of foreign workers in production process. Due to the abundant resources, residents’ living standards as well as the social service system have been promoted.

State religion of Qatar is Islam. According to constitutions and moral requirements, non-Muslim missionaries are prohibited from preaching, and there are also restrictions on public belief choices.

SINGING SAND Singing sand, also called whistling sand or barking sand, is sand that produces sound. The sound emission may be caused by wind passing over dunes or by walking on the sand.

The hall still adopts glass for more daylight, and a rest platform with panoramic views is set up. Its wall uses fair-faced concrete, creating a smooth surface to improve the intensity of sound reflection.

The sand has become an interactive link in the memorial hall. Via reverse thinking, the existing natural resources are endowed with the function of commemorative significance in the funeral ceremonies.

The third part of the ceremony is to feel the existence of the dead through sound vibration when touching the glass curtain wall. The entire space is surrounded by a dim environment, and basic lighting is provided by a few spotlights. Noise-reducing materi-

als are applied on irregular walls and roofs to minimize sound intensity. Visitors can feel sound vibration through feeling undulations of the glass curtain wall, and sound diffusion is simulated by the ring wave of finger touching the curtain.

LAND OF REINCARNATION PACHACAMAC Park Landscape Renovation Plan academic advisor: Shao,Peng,Xu,2020,spring

The Pachacamac historical site is located in Lima, Peru with a typical tropical desert climate. As urbanization progresses, the ecological environment is gradually being destroyed. Meanwhile, water resources available to local residents have decreased. Air pollution and soil desertification continues to worsen. The background of this project is that, slum areas with dense population and backward economy are obstacles in the process of urban recovery and development. This project is located in the triangular area between MUMA, Site Museum and Urpiwachaqs. Design of the public space allows citizens to exchange and learn about the history and culture of water resources. Reclaimed water system and movable plant landscape are applied to improve the local ecological environment, and to create a landscape of sustainable urban development.

(H9-H10) The reason of Pachacamac as an important religious worship center in the Andes remains unknown, whereas it is generally believed that the construction of its first monument temple started in the middle of Lima culture (about 400 CE to 500 CE). The red and white fragments found

under the Inka Sun Temple in Pachacamac by Strong and Corbett in 1943 indicates that at the lower reaches of Lurin Valley, funerals and ceremonies have been widely spread with great importance in the beginning of human culture.

MAIN PROBLEM

OTHER PROBLEMS

Peru is currently facing with water shortage and recycling problems. Although renewable water resources in Peru accounts for about 4% of the world’s recourses, its coastal areas engaging in

most of the economic activities with more than half the population only get 1.8% of the country’s fresh and renewable water resources.

THE PROCESS OF URBANIZATION DESTROYS THE EDGE OF ANCIENT HISTORICAL SITES With rapid economic development, population increase and accelerating urbanization, demand for space has increased, which leads to the edge destruction of Pachacamac historical site.

5

WATER SOURCE There is only one Lulin River near Pachakamak Park, which can supply water to the surrounding area and is far away from the main water supply. With economic development, the area of Urpiwachaq Wetland Lagoon has shrunk from the current 2.2 hectares, and now there is drought.

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

WATER QUALITY

Inlet of lower Lurin River was eroded by the sea, forming unusable brackish water. Meanwhile, erosion of the surrounding ground will lower the quality of groundwater.

Gradual water quality decline in Peru is due to untreated wastewater discharged by mining, industry, agriculture and municipalities.

SOIL EROSION Most areas of Peru are affected by wind erosion and climates. However, residents’ cutting and burning methods on cultivation has worsen soil erosion.

SOIL POLLUTION

Mn

Fe

Pb

ECOLOGICAL IMBALANCE SOCIAL Due to the low economic level and low technical level of the nearby areas, serious environmental pollution is caused, and the reuse rate of the local water management river is low.

The problems caused by water resources make the ecological environment of wetlands gradually decline, which also reduces the cultural relevance between wetlands and history.

There are a large number of illegal wastes unattended in the area around the project, including industrial wastes causing metal pollution to the soil and destruction to the ecological environment.

PTERIS VITTATA

Opiapoa atacamensis is a spherical cactus, solitary or clustered. It is highly adaptable to arid environments, and it is worth noting that its main root is much longer than the stem, which has a good effect on protecting water and soil. These plants can be used to prevent soil erosion and reduce dust pollution in urban areas.

TILLANDSIA

THE PATH OF MEDITATION Indoor corridors in universities to improve students' concentration Academic Advisor: Liu lei,Xu,2020,spring

In China, all students must follow 9 years of exam-based education, and every year, close to 10 million students need to pass the college entrance exam to apply for college, however, most students have become fearful of studying instead after going to college, which makes the quality of education of Chinese college students decline year by year. This project is to solve the problem of the education quality of college students by studying the effect of the human brain on concentration under the influence of color and sound, incorporating it into the corridor and placing it near study rooms/studies/classrooms in major universities, starting from improving the concentration of college students on learning.

After being traumatized, and affected by stress disorders, different age groups has completely different coping measures. As people grow older, our brain continues to accumulate memories and enhance cognitions. Between 18 to 24 years old, the brain matures, and people will have more objective cognitions on PTSD coping measures.

THE DESIGNER’S DEATH Discuss the narrative space of designer's working situation academic advisor: Lei Liu,Peng Guo,2020,autumn

In today's society, the design industry has become an integral part of social progress. As demand grows, there are more and more designers. However, due to the nature of their work, designers have to give up some of their health to create better work. The project draws on my own actual events to provoke reflection on the industry as a whole. By using a combination of small installations to form a closed-loop corridor, the project is a metaphor for the current situation of designers and raises public awareness and concern for them.

BACKGROUND While preparing my portfolio, after a long day of studying and working, I suddenly developed severe pain in my lower back, which forced me to visit the hospital emergency department at 1:00 am. This triggered me to think about the designer community.
