[ B E H I N D T H E C OV E R ] After an extensive model search for this issue’s cover photo, we decided the best person to represent an equestrian is a real equestrian herself. In the shady groves of Chastain Horse Park, Buckhead resident Caroline Cohen and her handsome horse Max (tacked by Chastain Horse Park’s Nancy Townsend) were stunning subjects for our “Outdoors Issue” cover shoot. Chief photographer Sara Hanna and hair/ makeup extraordinaire Julian Reynolds, owner and creator of Julian’s Cosmetics + Skin Care, put their expertise to work for an image that brings Caroline and Max’s loving relationship to life. What’s more, our (human) model’s flawless look featured Pürminerals, a makeup line owned by Caroline’s husband! It all went off with little pomp and circumstance—all that was needed was a light reflector, a backdrop of tree-lined pathways and barns, and a few treats to keep Max on his toes (or should we say hooves?). How you commune with nature is a personal choice, so in this month’s cover feature, writer Amelia Pavlik offers a thorough guide to our neighborhood’s scenic outdoor destinations and the adventurous pursuits that can be enjoyed at each—from paddleboarding at Sandy Springs’ Morgan Falls Overlook Park to fishing at Brookhaven’s Murphey Candler Park. And since we all like to celebrate our accomplishments, we throw in suggestions on where to get a bite after your date with the wild. This “Outdoors Issue” also highlights where to gear up and train for your outdoor exploits and the fashions and beauty products best suited for the open air. If you do feel the need to head out of town, Contributing Editor Karina Antenucci shares some of the camping spots within two hours of Buckhead and recounts a no-frills getaway to the hike-in, hike-out Len Foote Hike Inn where you can truly disconnect from it all (there is a no-cell phone policy). With its high-rises, restaurants and shopping malls, you may not consider Buckhead an outdoorsy neighborhood. I didn’t, until I read this issue. Now I stand corrected and find peace knowing that on a tough day, when I’m in desperate need of a therapy session, the canopy of trees, calming river water and beautiful scenic overlooks are just a short drive away.

BELOVED ARTS FESTIVAL RETURNS AFTER A HIATUS

If you missed checking out your favorite artists at the Brookhaven Arts Festival last year, here’s your chance—after an absence in 2014, the annual event is back by popular demand. On Oct. 17 and 18, more than 100 artists from across the country will gather to showcase their creations in mediums ranging from painting to photography,

woodworking to weaving. Individuals signed up to display their wares include Atlanta’s own Susan Morehead, whose custom handcrafted hats look like they came straight off a “Downton Abbey” set, and Dawn Muscio, who creates exquisite one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces in her Brookhaven studio (see her profile on page 52).

The festival’s new organizer, the Brookhaven Community Foundation, promises plenty of food, fun and live tunes throughout the day. The event is free, but don’t forget your wallet in case you see a piece you just can’t live without. A Family Man Buckhead CEO named “Father of the Year” When Vince Thompson, CEO of Melt, a Buckhead-based sports marketing firm, was named “2015 Atlanta Father of the Year” by the American Diabetes Association, his adopted family—Gwen Johnson, her son, Stefhan, and daughter, Chelsea—led the applause. Thompson was nominated by his colleagues for helping “raise” the Johnson kids, as well as successfully co-parenting his 15year-old son, Carter Jackson, with his ex-wife, Tracey. He also serves on the board of The Showcase Group, which mentors kids in the Georgia juvenile justice system, and is a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association, the Arthritis Foundation, and Wellspring Living, an organization that assists victims of sexual trafficking. “To me, he’s not extended family; he’s my brother, a wonderful person with a heart of gold,” Johnson says. The families met in 2000 when Johnson filled the role of babysit-

ter for Thompson’s son. Caught between paychecks with little food, she asked for an advance of $20. “Instead, Vince gave me a check for $150 and told me to let him know if we were ever in need of anything,” Johnson recalls. “I had never met anyone like him. Within a short time, we became one family.” Fast forward to 2015. Johnson, who now oversees childcare for Melt, recently bought her first home. Her kids are also excelling—Stefhan is a student at DeVry University and works at Melt; Chelsea graduated from Georgia State University and is applying to law schools. “The Thompsons changed the direction of our lives and helped us become who we are,” Johnson says. Thompson shrugs, “If everyone helped one family break the cycle of poverty, the impact would be enormous and many societal problems would disappear.”

Kids are supposed to be energetic and active, but for medically fragile children, even sitting or climbing a staircase can be insurmountable. “Often they are prisoners in their own homes because families can’t afford adaptive equipment,” says Carolyn Polakowski, executive director of the Fragile Kids Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps fill the gaps left by Medicare for Georgia’s least fortunate. On Oct. 15, Post Properties, known for its upscale apartment homes in Buckhead, Brookhaven and Sandy Springs, will close its corporate doors for an annual day of volunteering. “At Fragile Kids’ headquarters, a group will donate supplies, pack Birthday Bash Boxes and provide funds for Upsees—innovative mobility devices that help children with motor impairment stand and walk with an adult wearing a special harness,” says Virginia

Breakthrough in Ovarian Cancer Detection Atlanta researchers create blood test with potential It took 12 years of research, but Buckhead resident Dr. Benedict Benigno, director of Gynecological Oncology at Northside Hospital and founder of the Ovarian Cancer Institute, and Dr. John McDonald, director of the Integrated Cancer Research Center at Georgia Tech, have developed the first blood test to detect early-stage ovarian cancer. Currently, the disease goes undetected until late stages when the prognosis is poor. In initial trials, the test has shown to be 100 percent accurate in spot-

ting the cancer before it presents symptoms. When approved for clinical application, it will greatly increase the survival rate of one of the leading causes of death in gynecologic cancers. Partners Dr. Benigno and Dr. McDonald worked with researchers utilizing Georgia Tech’s cuttingedge technology. The group assessed more than 2,000 serum and tissue samples for the study. Their revolutionary findings have just been submitted for publication. Success came after years of

frustration. “I was dismayed to see how ovarian cancer had spread to other organs in so many of my patients,” Dr. Benigno says. “Ashkenazi Jews and women who test positive for the BRCA gene or have family histories of breast or ovarian cancer are 10 times more at risk than the general public. efore the crisp autumn nights set in for good, the days still provide enough warmth to invite a few more lake outings. Instead of heading north to see trees change colors, head about 155 miles south for a spin on the Jet Ski or a dip in the indoor pool at Lake Blackshear. Swimming, boating, sunning and paddling can be even more enjoyable when the temperatures aren’t in the triple digits—a fact that makes Lake Blackshear in Cordele, Georgia a year-round draw for those who want to be on the water. The 8,700-acre lake is the jewel of Georgia Veterans State Park, a nature retreat that includes an 18-hole golf course, beach, marina, fishing piers and trails that wind under towering trees, dripping with swaying Spanish moss. Visitors get their first glimpse of the lake’s size as they drive over it on their way into the park. But before they go very far, they’re invited to stop at the park’s museum that houses memorabilia from conflicts as far back as the Revolutionary War. The biggest artifacts are just outside the building— a collection of military tanks and planes, including a giant Boeing B-29A. Throughout the year, park rangers schedule programs that invite visitors to explore the park’s 1,300 acres with nature hikes along 3 miles of trails, bird-watching expeditions and twilight kayak and canoe rides. Bikes, boats and picnic shelters can be reserved.

At the heart of the park is Lake Blackshear Resort, a hotel and conference center that accommodates guests with 78 rooms in the main lodge and its adjacent villas, with balconies facing the water. Another 10 rustic cottages line the water’s edge. Two restaurants, a fitness center and indoor and outdoor swimming pools are available to guests. For those who prefer to commune with nature, 77 campsites can be booked as well. Along with the on-site activities, Blackshear is conveniently situated to be a base for exploring the surrounding area. One of the easiest—and most unusual—ways to roam the countryside is to take a ride on the SAM Shortline, a set of antique rail cars that, depending on the day, allows travelers to hop off and on at stops between Cordele and Plains, the home of former President Jimmy Carter. During the layover there, visitors can grab lunch, wander through the museum in old Plains High School and see Carter’s boyhood farm. Halfway along the route is Americus, the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity that features the Global Village and Discovery Center showcasing homes the organization has built around the world. One of the most stunning buildings in town is the 1892 Windsor Hotel, a restored Victorian edifice of turrets, balconies, gables and a 3-story open atrium of carved railings and pillars. Inside, visitors will find an ice cream and crepe parlor, a pub and the

elegant Rosemary and Thyme restaurant that specializes in upscale Southern cuisine. From Blackshear, it’s also a short drive to the Georgia Rural Telephone Museum, said to house the largest collection of antique phones and memorabilia in the world. Another notable attraction is Andersonville National Historic Site where 150 years ago, 45,000 Federal soldiers were imprisoned during the Civil War. Though the park and surrounding areas offer plenty to do, the best way to say adieu to the season may be with one last Indian summer day on the lake—a memory to revisit in a few weeks when it’s time to light the fireplace. n

2 countries, 13 cities and a newfound sense of adventure

’d dreamed about visiting Australia and New Zealand most of my life, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that it became a reality. As a consultant with Buckhead-based Slalom, my husband is eligible for a month-long sabbatical after just three years at the company. The second he joined, we started planning. Fast-forward past the endless hours on TripAdvisor, Google Maps and Hotels.com, and the trip was better than we could have imagined. But now that we’re back, I sometimes struggle to convey all the beauty and adventure I found in 13 diverse cities and towns over the course of a month. For the sake of time, I’ve learned to stick to the highlights.

LAKE TAUPO, NEW ZEALAND Taupo is a small town centered around a beautiful lake so big it feels like an ocean. We visited Huka Falls, a Niagara-style waterfall with pure green-blue water and numerous viewing points, and wandered through Craters of the Moon, a geothermal field with gaseous activity and colorful mud pools. But one of my favorite activities was simply walking along the lakeside path embracing the fresh air, scenic views and overall serenity of the area. Here, we had one of our favorite meals of the trip, at a convivial spot called Victoria’s. Not only was the food superb (kale and quinoa salad for me, beef steak sammy for my husband), but Victoria herself offered recommendations on the area, including a late-night dip in the technically

closed thermal pools—a favorite activity of the locals. I was nervous at first, but decided to go for it. The water started off cold, but the farther in we waded, the warmer it got, and we practically had the pools to ourselves. We only stayed an hour, but being out there, in the dark, immersed in nature felt completely exhilarating. SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA Wherever we travel, my husband asks, “Would you live here?” Up until now, I’ve always said no. But I fell in love with Sydney at first sight. It was a sunny 75 degrees, with water and mountains forming a perfect backdrop to the city. It’s a bustling one, the largest in Australia, but it was easy to get around on foot and public transit.

We spent a day exploring Circular Quay, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the market at the Rocks, a picturesque historic district. We took the ferry to Manly Beach to soak up the sun, and embarked on a gorgeous coastal cliff walk from Bondi to Bronte and Coogee beaches— each with its own personality. We ate authentic Thai food at Chat Thai, and vegetarian small plates at Yulli’s in the trendy Surry Hills neighborhood. We read books in Hyde Park, and watched a performance of Madame Butterfly at the Sydney Opera House. Everywhere we went, we felt welcomed. BRISBANE AND PHILLIP ISLAND, AUSTRALIA No trip to Oz is complete without seeing the animals unique to the region, and I think about our day at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane all the time. There are more than 130 koalas and the best part is they’re all out in the open! For a fee, you can get your picture taken “cuddling” one—I stood in line three times. Then there are the kangaroos. Large and imposing, they may look scary, but they’re

actually very sweet. At one point, my husband went to watch a reptile show while I visited the restroom. An hour later, he found me in the ‘roo field with kangas eating out of my hand. But the best part was the Penguin Parade at Phillip Island, just 90 minutes from Melbourne. Every night at sunset, hundreds of fairy penguins make their way up the beach to burrow in dunes. We arrived early and snagged front row seats, then watched in awe as the penguins made their appearance, marching up the sand in little lines. After a while, we raced up the boardwalk and stood about a foot from these fascinating creatures as they made their nests for the night. It was so idyllic it was hard to believe it was real. FINAL THOUGHTS Normally, by the time a trip is almost over, I’m ready to go home. But with so much to see and do, I could have stayed abroad for months. This was one trip that will be hard to top. n

It’s a reflection of the laid-back attitude locals have and the way they seem to truly embrace life, no matter what it throws at them. Invisible killer jellyfish? No problem. Crazy rip currents and sharks lurking? Just another day at the beach. Early day at work tomorrow? Down a long black coffee and move along. It’s a way of life that seeped into my pores. Me. The girl who makes the same five salads for the workweek every Sunday, lives by her planner and started making to-do lists within hours of getting engaged. Okay—so I didn’t exactly go bungee jumping; it was a more subtle change, something I noticed after I got back. The little things just didn’t bother me as much. The post office I’m at doesn’t sell stamps? So I’ll drive to another one. My husband forgot to fold the laundry? The world won’t end if it gets a little wrinkled. But then other things I wouldn’t have blinked twice at before really stood out. A grumpy clerk in the grocery store—would it kill her to

smile, just a little? A super urgent assignment at work that has everyone frantic—we work in advertising, people. There are no true emergencies. Two weeks back in the office and I felt the glow fading. The constant rush, the pressure to do—and be— it all. It’s American. There are things I love about our country. Things we do well, great even. But overall attitude and prioritizing what’s really important are not among them. Don’t get me wrong; I take pride in my career, but spending a full month with my husband in Oz made me realize that life is not about how many tasks you accomplish, but the way you live.

he only way to get to Len Foote Hike Inn, one of the few backcountry inns in the country, is via 5 miles on foot through the Chattahoochee National Forest. My journey began at Amicalola Falls State Park Visitor Center, located 90 minutes from Buckhead, where you are required to check in by 2 p.m. to ensure arrival at the eco-friendly inn, named after a renowned conservationist, by 5 p.m.—just in time for the campus sustainability tour. The Hike Inn Trail shares its first leg with the Appalachian Trail (AT) Approach Trail, leading to the southernmost entry point of the AT at Springer Mountain. Maybe because it was Georgia’s steamiest month, August, and I sweat the equivalent of taking multiple hot yoga classes in a row, but I couldn’t imagine doing even the first mile with more than what I had in my backpack—a change of clothes, a few toiletries, book, camera and 32-ounce water bottle. Though I admired the backpackers I passed, I didn’t envy them, with packs 10 times the size of mine. The trail is well traveled (meaning there’s quite a clear path), but about 75 percent uphill … up-mountain, rather. If you look up from carefully observing where you are stepping so as not to trip over tree roots or rocks—or, in my case, to avoid packs of aggressive yellow jackets (who nest in the ground in late summer)—the scene is grounding with natural beauty. canopy of hickory, pine and oak offers shade the whole way. You’ll cross small streams, pass wildflowers and more of nature’s scenic vignettes. The feeling when I reach Hike Inn after two hours of nonstop hiking is one of accomplishment and relief. Upon check-in, the receptionist hands me a bag with towels and sheets to make up my bunk bed. The 20 small, rustic rooms, each with two bunks, feel like a summer camp. I popped into the cantina for a glass of selfserve ice-cold lemonade, and enjoyed it on one of several Adirondack chairs on the wraparound veranda with views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Simply divine. Next stop: The solar-powered bathhouse for a refreshing shower—I came out a new woman. If you join the tour of the grounds, you’ll learn about what gave the four-season inn Gold LEED-Certified building status. The eco-friendly attributes include a compost pile complete with over 1,000 worms; composting toilets that don’t smell because of a hightech continuous ventilation system; solar panels; limited lighting; and stilts that hold the buildings up, lessening construction’s impact on the mountain underneath. A bell rings promptly at 6 p.m., announcing the start of a family-style dinner on picnic tables inside the cantina. The menu on this Saturday evening is roast beef, salad, green beans, potatoes and apple cobbler. Hungry

from the hike, the motley crew of teenagers, moms, older outdoorsy types and couples all devour it—and also the breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and creamy grits at 8 a.m. sharp the next morning. Once it’s dark outside, everyone heads to the Sunrise Room, where you play board games, read, chat with fellow hikers or do a puzzle, without an iPad or cell phone in sight. While the inn discourages alcohol consumption in accordance with being part of the State Park system, there’s some discreet sipping of flasks that goes on, too. After putting together a mere quarter of a 500-piece tiger puzzle, a round of Battleship and a little bourbon, I retire early to refuel for the next day’s return hike. This time, with mind relaxed, I take more time to appreciate the majesty of the trees and to breathe in the gentle aromas of the great outdoors. But somehow, the way back still manages to be mostly uphill. n

Steve Schaefer A longtime photojournalist-turnedphotography instructor, Steve Schaefer finally focused the lens on his four-legged friend, Dexter. A highly trained border collie, Dexter follows commands better than most children do, so it was a snap to shoot him. “I thought, hey, this is a breeze! I should get into pet photography,” Steve tells us. Little did he realize, photographing other pets would not be that simple. But as it turns out, this challenge is now one of his favorite aspects of his career. Everything from reluctant rescues to sassy schnauzers, Steve prides himself on capturing each pet’s personality.

or Bryan Dow, everything communicates a story. The senior creative director at OshKosh and Atlanta newbie (nine months and counting) sees the world—from crafting brand campaigns to organizing artwork on his dining room walls—in vignettes. Dow’s unique eye on the world combined with a contagious, passionate energy for life and art transformed his newly leased (since January) modern Buckhead townhome into a sophisticated, eclectic abode that is a walk through his personal journey. “My life has come full circle. I love Atlanta!” says Dow of landing back in the South after following a career path that led him from Decatur, Alabama, where he grew up, to Los Angeles (“I moved to L.A. with $150 in my pocket”), Mineral Point, Wisconsin, and Columbus, Ohio. The creative, who has worked with brands such as Parisian, DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) and Lands’ End, began his career as a dancer-turned-model until he realized his talents behind the camera lens and began styling celebrities and photo shoots, and later brand campaigns. While searching for his new home, where he lives with his partner, Wayne, and Pearl, a 3-year-old smooth-haired fox terrier, Dow had a few priorities. These included finding

an open space where he could entertain, a private guest room for his mother’s visits and a kitchen with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. “Once you have high-end appliances, quite honestly, there’s no going back. That was a big draw and also the space is really open for entertaining,” Dow explains. He enjoys putting together intimate gatherings with a handful of friends, cooking and catching up on each others’ lives. “I spend the most time in the kitchen listening to music and cooking. Very slowcooked pork or chicken is a new discovery. Letting it cook for six hours and having the scents in the air is so delicious,” he says, breathing in the air around him as if he currently has something in the oven (I’m hoping for an invite to a future dinner party). Hands-on in everything he does, Dow decorated his new three-bedroom, threeand-a-half-bathroom, 3,000-plus-squarefoot domicile himself with three design rules: “Contrast, contradict and combine.” He began in the living room with a 1960s red leather Chesterfield sofa from Sarah Cyrus Home in Atlanta’s Westside Design District. “She is one of the first people I met when I moved to Atlanta. Sarah Cyrus and Westside Modern are really my go-to shops in the city,” he says.

Above the bookshelf hangs an abstract painting of a man’s face by Alabama artist Michael Banks. “This is the first piece of art that I ever bought—I was inspired by his minimalistic folk art on salvaged boards, by the textures and colors.” In the adjacent dining area that connects the living room to the kitchen, Dow incorporated a Danish modern console from Westside Modern, a shop specializing in midcentury furniture, as a springboard for his artsy vignette. “This space is slightly over-scaled so I was inspired to curate and collect an eclectic mix of art to frame the wall,” he says.

The collection that hangs above the dining room console includes a mixture of landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, blackand-white photography and a gilt Italian mirror. As classical music—his favorite— plays on surround sound, he speaks fondly of each piece. Among them is a geometric cityscape from 1958 that reminds Dow of his view from the Bowery Hotel in Manhattan, where he stays when he visits the city. Below it is a rare (one of five) Leonard Baskin woodblock print, a portrait bought from a dealer in Columbus, where Dow lived while working at DSW. The living room also incorporates an Eero Saarinen armchair from Knoll, one of the first furniture items Dow ever purchased. “I bought it in the late ’90s—I love the shape,” he adds. The 1940s electric Hammond grandfather clock was actually a grandmother clock—his father’s mother’s. “This piece is very significant to me as my style changes and progresses; this grounds me in my family history,” Dow says. Next to the clock is a midcentury bookshelf by Frank Lloyd Wright, who for one year in the 1950s designed a line for Henredon. “I’m a huge fan of his work, the purist nature of his style and the textiles he used,” Dow says.

cutouts by Nancy Miller in 1972, a decade Dow is particularly fond of, hang on either side of the wall. And at the top right sits a black-and-white nature print gifted by photographer Marili Forastieri 25 years ago, and is one of the first pieces of art Dow ever owned. In keeping with his “less is more” mantra, the dining room table and Eames chairs are unfussy ’60s Danish modern pieces from Westside Modern. The large rectangular Grosfeld House mirror in gold and silver, however, is a Scott Antique Markets find that had a previous life on a 1940s movie set. “I’ve always been a film enthusiast. Art films in particular have a beautiful stylistic vision. I see things as if through the lens of a camera capturing vignettes in a film,” says Dow, who became a member of the Directors Guild of America for directing commercials. “I was incredibly lucky because the home already came with some amazing features, like contemporary light fixtures, hardwood floors, designer wallpaper, an elevator— and I can control everything from my iPad,” Dow says of the full home automation, which includes surround sound and duallayered shades in every room. Within the elevator, which he typically only uses to haul items from the lower floor and garage to the main floor and upstairs bedrooms, hangs a photographic collage by Atlanta-based photographer Liz Von Hoene. “She is a mentor and we have been friends and collaborated on work together for over 20 years,” Dow explains and tells a story of a memorable photo shoot they did together for Parisian with the 1960s and 1970s fashions from his mother’s and grandmother’s closets. “In this gift, she has taken pieces that she’s cherished and built a collage of

a woman. I love the butterfly and her eyes.” Upstairs in the third floor hallway is another eye-catching vignette—this one pays homage to religion with three framed representations of Jesus. The velvet one is from Dow’s mother (she received it from an admirer of hers in the ’70s); the tin is from a trip to Mexico; and the third is an early 19th century print from a thrift shop in Montgomery, Alabama. “They are art to me,” he says. Throughout the household, there are several other spiritual pieces, including a wooden angel from Mexico in the kitchen and a Tibetan prayer box that hangs from a wardrobe in a hallway. “The significance

of these pieces, for me, is energy and evolution. It’s more about what moves me and embracing all of the different religions around the world. And, of course, growing up in the South—in the ’70s, in Alabama—religion was a factor in the household,” Dow explains. Within the minimalistic, neutral-toned master bedroom, the king-size linen, tufted bed takes center stage. It was a gift his interior decorator sister-in-law had hand made for him by Martha O’Hara Interiors in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Another piece close to his heart is the mahogany box on his bedside table, which he purchased during his teenage years in Alabama. “I fell in love with antiques at a very young age,” he notes. “There’s hardly anything new in my home. People decided to get rid of these pieces and I ended up with them. I love the eclectic mix.” While he’s still on the hunt for a runner for the upstairs hallway and a large, very simple wool silk rug for the living room, Dow is settling in nicely to his Buckhead dwelling. “Overall, I feel like I’m at a good place with the house.” Now about that dinner party … n

s the president of Atlanta’s Legendary Events, David Lishness enjoys a life filled with creativity, philanthropy and diverse style, in his work, his clothing choices and his appetite. Lishness was named president of the wellknown catering and special events company in 2010 and thrives on the joys of weaving his previous business experience into daily operations. “It turns out the combination was a great precursor to my current position,” says Lishness, whose previous post was architectural sales manager for Miami-based stone importer Keys Granite. “We’re in an industry where our biggest challenge is creating unique environments that deliver exactly what the client is looking for.” The newest feather in the Legendary Events cap is the much-anticipated Flourish, a more than 18,000-square-foot event venue opening in November across the street from Legendary’s The Estate. Flourish is housed in a renovated former car dealership/antique showroom on Piedmont Road in the heart of Buckhead. How did your previous experience lead you to the business of event planning? Prior to Legendary Events I spent many years in product development as well as in design and architecture. Whether it’s in the catering element, the room décor, the floral style, or all three, understanding the importance of how all these different yet complementary components come together to produce the desired atmosphere is crucial to an event’s success. Where in Atlanta do you live and what are some of your favorite local restaurants? I recently sold my house in Ansley Park and I’m thinking about moving to the Morningside area. In the meantime I’m in Atlantic Station, which is really convenient for work. As far as restaurants go, I’m so glad MF Sushi reopened, and who can say no to the Hamachi Crudo at Cooks & Soldiers or the delicious Maple Leaf Farms duck at Bacchanalia? What are the defining elements of your personal style? I spend a lot of time in classic black during the week as this is the Legendary Events uniform. On the weekends you’re most likely to find me in 7 For All Mankind jeans and maybe some Hugo Boss mixed with vintage finds from Little Five Points. I have an eclectic edge, which may come from being raised in New York; this also may explain my love of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Giving back to the community is important to you. Tell me about your philanthropic involvement. I feel very lucky that being a part of Legendary Events has allowed me the chance to work with amazing organizations like Senior Citizen Services and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. I’m also very proud to be on the board of Leadership Atlanta. Working with your peers for the betterment of the Atlanta community at large is a really inspiring experience. Everyone is so excited about Legendary Events’ newest endeavor, Flourish. What are your favorite things about the new event space and what can we expect with the interiors/architecture, menu options and other services? Everyone at the company is buzzing about this right now! We know that Flourish will be unlike any other venue available in Atlanta. We don’t want to give away every surprise, but we’re designing the décor to have a beautifully modern and chic feel. s a regular attendee of the infamous Studio 54 in New York City, Yvonne Lamé fantasized one day of owning her own version of the club. As fate would have it, Lamé— also known as Mark Zschiesche—now has a four-pack of them, including the newest, Lips Atlanta in Buckhead. Zschiesche grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, but couldn’t wait to move on. At 16 he hightailed it to New York, and survived doing odd jobs here and there, including waiting tables. He had dabbled in his own fashion line and at 23—with a partner—opened his own clothing store, Hosche, in the West Village of New York. Every Halloween Zschiesche dressed up in costumes, channeling Marilyn Monroe and other glamorous Hollywood stars. He realized he was a natural entertainer and in 1980 alter ego Yvonne Lamé was born. He started performing as Yvonne in 1990. His drag name is loosely based on Ivana Trump and a beloved fabric. “When I was younger, a lot of what I made was in lamé, so a friend suggested the name,” he says. Zschiesche calls Yvonne bubbly and over the top.

Before long he had closed the store and opened the first Lips in Greenwich Village with a team of partners. That was 1996; San Diego and Fort Lauderdale followed suit in 1999 and 2007, both successfully. Realizing what a thriving city Atlanta was and how popular drag was in the area, he and his partners decided to open a location here in 2013 with him as vice president for Lips Intellectual Properties, Inc. Featuring the best in regional drag entertainment, the 7,000-square-foot Lips Atlanta has the same look and flair— bright, vivid colors, huge chandeliers and an overall campiness, glitz and glam— of New York, but is the biggest by far of the four locations. “Atlanta is the grandest of them all,” he says. Some patrons are surprised on their first visit. “They think they are going to a gay bar restaurant,” he says. Lips is really not a gay establishment. It has more of a dinner theater vibe and 90 percent of the patrons are women. Two of the performers Zschiesche has used since opening night are Charlie Brown and Bubba Dee, both of whom have been doing drag for decades and are widely known throughout the region.

Violet Chachki, this year’s winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” used to perform at Lips as well. The likes of that television show has escalated drag to the mainstream. “Business has been doing better than expected,” he says. “It’s a great place to celebrate.” Lips Atlanta is open Wednesday through Sunday, with weekend events packed, including Gospel Brunch on Sunday. Zschiesche and his business and romantic partner, Michael Pacca, have a condo in the Buckhead area and love the location. These days, though, he is content to deal with the business end of the club. Now 53, he retired from performing three years ago. “As I aged, I felt comfortable in the skin I am in. The high heels are in the closet,” he says. But he’s the first to admit that he could be tempted to drag them back into action for a special occasion. Jewelry by design Brookhaven artist re-creates unique pieces from the past

n a statement that would make most parents cringe, Dawn Muscio declared she was going to major in jewelry making. But unlike most college students, Muscio had already demonstrated a serious talent for turning metal and stones into works of art while in high school. “In fact, I went to school to major in graphic design,” says the 46-year-old New York native. “In my sophomore year I started doing that and didn’t like it at all. Then I went to art class with a drawing that got ripped apart. I felt I was at the bottom of the barrel, and then they told us very few would make a living at our art. So I took a jewelry class to fill my schedule and soon realized I could make a living doing that— people would buy more jewelry than paintings.” After graduation, Muscio started working at a fine jewelry gallery

in upstate New York where she did “all the grunt work” from basic repairs to resetting stones. After moving to Atlanta in 1999, she held similar jobs in the back rooms of Buckhead’s Migliore and the Jewelry Artisans shop in Sandy Springs while trying to launch her own business. In 2005, she started selling her own creations out of her Vinings house and eventually was drawing enough clients that she moved into a 700-square-foot studio in Brookhaven. About two years ago, the business was doing so well that Muscio relocated nearby to her present site on Apple Valley Road, where there’s enough space to house a showroom and an event area. What’s kept clients coming back is Muscio’s uncanny ability to take an antique or existing piece and reconfigure it into something more stylish and contemporary: A diamond solitaire is reworked as

a pendant, surrounded by smaller diamonds set in white gold; a dog tag is filigreed like a Gothic church window. She has also won awards for her unique pieces, such as a pair of cufflinks in 18-karat red gold and stainless steel dotted with morganites, rubies and diamonds. “Restyling is like a puzzle: People come in with a jewelry box full of items they inherited, and I can remake an heirloom with sentimental value into something they will want to wear,” she says. One of her most memorable transformations turned a garnet mourning brooch from the late 1800s into a necklace, cocktail ring and earrings using yellow gold around the original stones. “It took a year to come up with the idea and make it, but now it’s a mix of the old and new,” she says. “And the client has three children, so she will have a piece to give each of them.” n

See the artist Muscio will be at the Brookhaven Arts Festival Oct. 17 and 18 where she’ll debut a new line of pendants and bracelets created from elements her clients love best: white gold and precious and semiprecious stones. Local author recounts the journey from crime to criminal justice STORY:

t’s a long way from the crime-riddled streets of East Los Angeles to a law firm in Buckhead. But the journey from such an inauspicious upbringing, hindered by gangs, drug deals and rough treatment from the court system, is why David Lee Windecher, 36, is today a passionate advocate for justice. Born in L.A. to Argentinean parents who spoke almost no English, Windecher witnessed the difficulties his family had winning a court case against an employer who owed back wages to his father, a painter. The lack of money drove the family back to South America until Windecher was 10, when they relocated again, this time to Miami. During his 16 years there, he learned firsthand the misery of being poor. His solution: Join a Hispanic gang. “I was jumped regularly and beaten pretty badly,” he recalls. “I saw a kid get shot. I started selling drugs and stealing cars—whatever would make poverty go away. Between the ages of 13 and 18, I was arrested 13 times and spent eight months in jail. At 16, I was charged with aggravated battery and was sent to an adult jail where I got into a fight every day.” The turning point came soon after that experience when Windecher realized that his younger brother and two sisters were follow-

ing his example. “I decided not to live a life on the street; I wanted them to follow me doing good, so I finally got out of the gang.” Windecher knuckled down, got a G.E.D. and graduated from American InterContinental University in Fort Lauderdale in 2005. During a public relations job with the Miami Dolphins, he earned the money to go to the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta. While there, an internship with Atlanta attorney Manny Arora established a friendship that helped Windecher get a job in the DeKalb County District Attorney’s office, where he was fired after a background check confirmed his arrests. After an impassioned plea to the District Attorney’s office that demonstrated his determination to keep others from following his own path, Windecher was admitted to the Georgia bar in 2012. He was also admitted to the bar in Florida, and in 2014, he flew to the same courthouse where he had been arraigned so many times and was sworn in with his family beaming nearby. “It was a hugely gratifying moment,” he says. Last year, Windecher, who now lives and works in Buckhead, opened his own law firm on Roswell Road, dedicated to defending the underdog. In May, he self-published his experiences, warts and all, real names

included, in The American Dream: HisStory in the Making. The book has sold about 1,500 copies. “My story is unique—not everyone is shot, stabbed, covered in tattoos, arrested, in jail, goes to college and then law school,” he says. “But the book is less about me and more about how I can impact local communities and people to bring about positive change.” After the book’s debut, Windecher became a legal consultant on “Nancy Grace,” signed a movie deal with Tyler Perry’s production firm and founded RED, Inc., a nonprofit that sponsors G.E.D. programs for juveniles who are facing nonviolent criminal charges. he starting lineup looks big and bad. At the center are juicy, quarterbacksize burgers. At either end sit jumbo wings, wearing the colors of Cajun spice, Jack Daniels barbecue sauce, bright Buffalo orange. Wait a minute! Time out! There’s a pile-up of nachos at center field. Someone’s going to get hurt if he finishes off this messy stack of chips and salsa, beef and cheese. If you think dining out should be fueled by booze and the euphoric highs and lows of cheers and boos, you’ll want to add The Bucket Shop Café to your list of places to tackle this college football season. A Buckhead game-day institution for some years now, The Bucket Shop opened in 1969 and has been at its current location, on Lenox Road across from Lenox Square, since 1982. In this sunny room on the ground level of a Financial District mid-rise, you’ll discover Atlanta’s answer to “Cheers,” a casual, family-owned, late-night spot that’s home to fetching servers in cheerleader-length short shorts; a newly renovated, street-side patio; lots of polished wood; and banks of TV sets for the sports-frenzied flock. Gober purchased the place from its original owners in 1992; today, Gober and his son Brandon Evans have created a foolproof formula of rib-sticking pub grub that appeals to the business crowd; walk-in customers from nearby malls; even MBA candidates who are studying at the satellite branch of the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. All right, then! How about them Dawgs? And since Georgia Tech is right down the street: Go Yellow Jackets! Um, not so fast there. While Evans assures that all colors are welcome at The Bucket Shop, here Orange and Blue is the new Red and Black. Yep, Evans is a third-generation Auburn alumnus, and if you happen to arrive here, say, this Nov. 14, when Auburn hosts Georgia, you can expect a welllubricated congregation of Tiger fans hovering over every inch of The Bucket Shop. As long as no “War Eagle!”-screaming soand-so swoops up this Bulldog’s burger or tips over his Terrapin Hopsecutioner (made in Athens, Georgia, natch), no penalties will be handed down at The Bucket Shop this fall. During a recent lunch and a follow-up

visit around quittin’ time on a Friday, I’ve been keeping score, and this highly likable sports bar gets extra points for its spirited and efficient service, sportsmanlike attitude and college-friendly price point. The hot wings are a menu mainstay. To be sure, there’s a busload of flavors (Thai chili, lemon pepper, honey barbecue and three levels of Buffalo heat, among others). I like my wings wet and messy, three-napkin style, if you will. Alas, the version I had—medium Buffalo—seemed just a tad dry, perhaps from being too long in the fryer. (Happily, there were moist towelettes for cleaning up orange fingers.) We had better luck with the crispy fried calamari—lots of frilly, tender tentacles for dunking in the sweet Thai chili dipping sauce (which we preferred over the marinara)— and the chicken rolls. I admit rolling my eyes when I heard about the latter, which sounds like a fusion experiment run amok. And yet, these crispy eggroll wrappers stuffed with a Mexican mélange of pollo, cheese, sour cream, chives and Tex-Mex sauce (salsa mixed with ranch) are a divine guilty pleasure.

Don’t come to The Bucket Shop expecting a sea of Red and Black on game day. The owners are Auburn alumni, and proud of it. No wonder they are the restaurant’s No. 1 seller. There are also a good many starters we’d like to try in future: fried pickle chips, spinach and artichoke dip, maybe those Nachos Grande, all so perfect with beer. Speaking of which, The Bucket Shop stocks an impressive sampling of local brews, on tap, bottled or canned. We were delighted to see selections from Red Hare, Orpheus, Pontoon Brewing and many others. There’s also a fairly simple wine list—six whites, seven reds, two sparklings, mostly from the West Coast—and some sweet, girly sounding cocktails made with fruity liqueurs, flavored vodkas and rums. And then there are the burgers. You can build your own, choosing turkey, veggie, salmon, chicken, bison, even Kobe beef; a spice rub if you please; plus cheese, toppings and sauces. I went with one of the predesigned burgers: the Black ’N’ Bleu, a blackened ground-chuck patty with blue cheese and bacon. It came grilled to specifications (“pink and juicy”), and with a side of onion rings, it was as welcome as a touchdown. Though you may order tacos, salads,

steak or fried chicken here, we think the sandwiches—from the greasy-in-a-good-way Philly cheesesteak to a salmon BLT with basil mayo—rule. To go with, we liked the sweet potato fries and the jalapeño slaw. Dessert seems like an afterthought at The Bucket Shop. There are only three: brownie sundae, Key lime pie and chocolate-peanut butter pie. The Key lime confection was still icy from the freezer, and the flavor had a slightly artificial zing. But the peanut butter pie was wonderful. Extra point! So what’s in the name, Bucket Shop? It’s a term that dates back to the early 1800s and refers to a type of stock-market betting that the U.S. Supreme Court long ago declared illegal. Evans says the original owners catered to a financial clientele, so their so-called “investment saloon” was a tongue-in-cheek reference to shady deals of days gone by. Funny, I always thought Bucket Shop was a drinking reference—like a bottle shop, only fancier. (Think: buckets of ice, champagne, beer!) I’m betting that when your team is on the field and the drinks are flowing, none of this really matters. Hey, waiter. My boys are having a bad day. Could you bring me a double? n

f you haven’t heard about Buckhead’s newest speakeasy-style watering hole, Supply & Demand, you aren’t alone. Opened in September along Cains Hill Place behind Churchill’s British Pub, this 25-andup bar is an intimate address that is easy to overlook. Though, according to founding partner Brandon Lewis, that’s part of the appeal. “The inspiration was built off of the Wall Street economic principle of supply and demand,” says Lewis. “We’re curating beverage sources with high or discerning tastes instead of mainstream tastes. The supply is going to be very limited, which will hopefully lead to a high demand.” Adding to Supply & Demand’s sense of exclusivity is its “membersonly” requirement. While member-

ship is free, patrons will have to be invited by the bar to become a member before they’re allowed into it. Membership is nontransferable. If and when you do finally get inside Supply & Demand, you’ll find a sort of Chops-meets-St. Regis hybrid—very high-end, very Buckhead and very elite. The gleaming bar is the picture of opulence with $20,000 worth of mosaic subway tile, a custom oak bar and tremendous amounts of white marble with seating at the bar and at small tables. Taken in its entirety, it’s the picture of a 1920s-1930sera hideaway, aiming to attract both the glamorous socialite and the well-connected hipster. Lewis, who also owns Establishment (relocating from Buckhead to

Midtown mid-October), is manning the bar with its staff for the opening, before transitioning in new servers and mixologists. So if you’re a frequent visitor to Establishment, you will have an idea of what you can expect from the service and general vibe. Though the menu will be gourmet small bites (such as caviar), the focus here is on the hard-to-come-by liquor selection, featuring rare vintages of Japanese whiskey, scotches and bourbons, along with beer, wine and a “regal” list of what Lewis refers to as “craft-tails.” Open at 5 p.m. during the week and 7 SUPPLY & DEMAND or 8 p.m. on Saturday, the bar also hosts a dee3223 Cains Hill Place jay Friday and Saturday. CHEF MATTHEW BASFORD After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, current Canoe chef Matthew Basford left New Orleans, where he’d been since 2002 working for Dominique’s at Maison Dupuy Hotel in the French Quarter. Buckhead resident Doug McKendrick celebrates 20 years at his namesake steakhouse STORY:

ext month, McKendrick’s Steak House will celebrate 20 years in the Park Place shopping center on Ashford Dunwoody Road. The man behind the restaurant that is known for succulent steaks, fresh seafood and produce, and topnotch service, Buckhead resident Doug McKendrick, is not what you might expect. A college basketball star, veteran of the U.S. Navy, and certified public accountant by trade, McKendrick fell into hospitality in the 1970s, when he was financial vice president for the Downtown Omni Hotel restaurant Mimi & Max’s. “I liked what I was doing but wanted to get into owning and running my own business,” he explains. He learned about Park Place while it was still under construction, and opened Elan nightclub in 1979. It was open for nearly 10 years. Known for his high staff retention—his cleaning crew has been with him for 36 years, for example—McKendrick shares the story of, and secret to, his success.

How did you go from a nightclub to a steakhouse? L&N Seafood went in [the shopping center] for five years—I was not involved in that, but I had the place next to it, an Italian restaurant called Mi Spia, and Park Place Café piano bar. When L&N didn’t do well, they asked me to come up with another idea. I was traveling to Chicago at the time and thought about the steakhouses that were still there after 20, 30 or 40 years. How do you stay in business after so long and continue to attract regulars? Most of that is the staff. They know everyone in town. They’re the ones who relate to the customers and have a conversation and help them with their drink order. So many businesses have ups and downs because new technology comes out or trends change, but people have to eat and they want to eat. What’s your day-to-day role at the restaurant? I go in every morning and look at the financials from the night before and make sure we have the cash situation proper. I don’t have any culinary experience but I have business experience. That’s what so many people forget. You have great chefs who do a great job in the kitchen but don’t know what’s going on in the front of house. As a CPA, I find that the numbers are relatively easy. We evaluate our food,

liquor, beer and wine costs every month and stay on top of it. I work with the chef or the manager when I encounter a problem. You’re known for retaining staff members for decades. What’s your secret? You have to set rules and stay on top of them but let [the staff members] do their own thing and use their own personalities. We have 16 servers. Nine have been there more than 15 years. They know their customers. They know their jobs. They are making good money. They have a great product. How has the food evolved over the years? Steaks kind of stay the same. We buy the best quality products we can get our hands on, and make everything in-house. How often do you eat at McKendrick’s? I have lunch there almost every day and dinner one or two times a week. For lunch I have salmon, coleslaw, tomatoes and asparagus—or whatever’s available. For dinner, I get the 8-ounce filet every time, with creamed corn and lobster mac ’n’ cheese. How do you eat all of that and stay in shape? When I was in college I’d eat three steaks a night. Now I eat half of one. I played tennis and basketball until I was 60. I walk every day and work out a little bit here and there. n

DAVIO’S NORTHERN ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE With its handmade pasta, terrific steaks and foundation of classic Italian dishes, the Atlanta outpost of Massachusetts-based chef-preneur Steve DiFillippo sets a higher-than-usual standard for a mall restaurant. Finefood lovers flock to Phipps Plaza for Davio’s delicious fried calamari, tagliatelle Bolognese, and warm spinach salad like ravenous shoppers on the hunt for Louis Vuitton bags, Tiffany silver and Dior gowns. And they can do no better than the buttery medal-

FARM BURGER Of the locally pastured gourmet-burger chains, Farm Burger, which has a Buckhead shop on Piedmont Road near Tower Place, has long been a favorite. And it’s hard to imagine a more decadent list of toppings for your grass-fed, dry-aged patty than oxtail marinade, apple slaw, red-bean chili, pork belly, bone marrow, cured lardo, bacon, fried egg or the six kinds of cheese. Keep your eye on the blackboard for seasonal specials, too. In spring, you might get a burger decked out with Vidalias and pesto; in summer, a dollop of peach chutney. While we don’t normally pass on beerbattered onion rings, Farm Burger’s sweet potato fries are irresistible.

GEORGIA GRILLE

born owner Karen Hilliard’s original vision, which means she still splashes the bright flavors of Santa Fe onto the plates of her happy and devoted customers. The French-trained Hilliard dresses her creations in voluptuous cream sauces accented with smoky poblanos or tart tomatillos—and drizzles them with colorful squirt-bottle squiggles of flavor. We dug her smoked-pollo enchiladas, which are stuffed with onion and sour cream, smothered with green-chile sauce and tomato salsa and served with a little salad in a taco-shell cup. The flat-iron steak, rubbed with salt and spices and cooked until its crust is charred, was another solid choice. Atlanta has plenty of regional restaurants, but a good Southwestern place is hard to find. Hilliard, who lives in nearby Peachtree Hills, knows what her neighbors want, and she dares not let them down.

JOY CAFÉ Every Sunday at sunrise, Joy Austin Beber goes to her Buckhead café and makes a whopping pile of her great-grandmother’s biscuits. After church, she serves a hallelujah chorus of a brunch: fluffy buttermilk pancakes; eggs Benedict; and those famous biscuits topped with gravy, sausage and scrambled eggs. I arrived at the 3 p.m. cutoff for the breakfast-y brunch items, and enjoyed a terrific cobb salad with loads of blue cheese, bacon, avocado, boiled egg and grilled chicken. The Joy’s pièce de résistance, though, is the Crack Pie, with its oatmeal-cookie crust and gooey interior. Joy got a kick out of hearing that I am wack for her crack. KR STEAKBAR Atlanta chef Kevin Rathbun’s only Buckhead restaurant feels customtailored for the community. A contemporary nocturnal cubbyhole where small plates rule, wine flows and the air bristles with excitement, the fashionable “steakbar” concept finds Rathbun and chef de cuisine Jessica Gamble fusing two venerable concepts: meat and Italian. Here, nearly everything speaks with a perky Mediterranean lilt: amari-kissed cocktails; steak doused with espresso sauce; heavenly olive-oil cake with almond brittle and citrus cream. (Pastry chef Kylie Akiyama is terrific.) Hidden touches, like the speakeasy-style bar behind the kitchen and a patio that feels like a sunken garden, make us want to continue to explore this romantic spot. NEWK’S EATERY This Mississippi-based chain has popped up in the Atlanta market, and though it looks like a fast-food joint, it tastes like homemade. Salads—from shrimp rémoulade salad to a delicious steak-and-blue-cheese version to old-fashioned chicken salad—are a standout. At this casual, family friendly, crowd-pleasing spot you can also get sandwiches, pizzas and mac-andcheese but, refreshingly, no burgers! We are pretty crazy about the sausageand-pepperoni pie, with its thin crust and warm and gooey toppings. And who can resist a crispy rice treat with chocolate and peanut butter? Not us. WATERSHED ON PEACHTREE THIRTEEN PIES This modern gourmet-pizza parlor in the posh Buckhead Atlanta development is a welcome addition to this pie-struck town. The room is beautiful, the cocktails memorable, the small plates and housemade pastas stuffed with fresh, vibrant, Mediterranean

Co-owned by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers and restaurateur Ross Jones, Watershed is a restaurant with a storied, personality-driven past. It started as a walk-up sandwich shop in Decatur, won a James Beard Award for chef Scott Peacock and moved to Buckhead in 2012. Recently, chef Zeb Stevenson took over the kitchen, and his Southern

Enchanted. That’s how I felt the first time I wandered into the straight-out-of-Japan bamboo forest that lines a portion of the Chattahoochee River bank on the East Palisades Trail in Sandy Springs. Although I log my fair share of time on the treadmill, it’s discoveries like this fairy-tale forest that lead me to choose a hike in the woods over an indoor workout whenever possible. Whether you’re looking for a place to horseback ride, paddleboard, or garden, we’ve taken the guesswork out of finding Buckhead’s best outdoor sanctuaries. econnecting with a childhood passion and the challenge of figuring out how to get a more than 1,000-pound creature to cooperate with you. These are just two of the many reasons Caroline Cohen decided to start riding at Chastain Horse Park (CHP). “My friend Liz has a horse at CHP, and she knew I rode informally as a child,” says Cohen, who lives in Buckhead. “I came to watch Liz ride a few times, and she suggested I take lessons again. I started riding again in the summer of 2014 to learn proper equitation with the goal of competing as an adult amateur in hunter/jumper shows. I’ve loved every moment!” Cohen enjoyed a 14-year career

in marketing and special events and currently volunteers for Cumberland Academy of Georgia and Chastain Horse Park, while working alongside her husband as an ambassador for Pürminerals cosmetics. She started taking lessons twice a week for a couple of months, and now rides five days and takes lessons twice each week with her horse, Maximus, an American Warmblood and Paint, which she purchased a few months ago and boards at CHP. “CHP is perfect because of its convenient location in the heart of Buckhead and the excellent trainers, but it’s also great to know you’re supporting a nonprofit organization while enjoying a unique and exciting sport,” she adds.

Lessons are available to anyone 6 or older, beginner to advanced. CHP, which reopened in 1999 with a brand-new facility, also offers horse boarding, leasing, pony birthday parties and volunteer opportunities. “In one way or another, all riders contribute to the success of our therapeutic programs, which provide riding services to children and adults with special needs,” says Karen Kogon, executive director at CHP. “We’d be lost without them.” n

WORD OF ADVICE: Cohen advises riding newbies to be prepared to work hard. “There’s more physical and mental work to be done by the rider than you might expect; you are constantly learning how to communicate with your horse,” she says. “For example, there are days when Maximus and I are a great team, and we jump beautifully. Then there are days where he gets lazy and I have to work extra hard to keep him motivated, or days I’m not on my game. t feels like a butt-kicking Smoky Mountains hike—that’s one of the things I love most about the East Palisades Trail in Sandy Springs. I never would have known the trail existed if it hadn’t been for my friend Alex. (He’s a veteran obstacle course racer who is always looking for spots near Buckhead to train outdoors.) There are two entrances to the trail area, but I recommend the one off Indian Trail. The entrance road is unpaved, so keep that in mind when selecting a vehicle, and there’s plenty of parking at the trailhead. Since it’s a National

Park Service trail, you’ll need to pay a $3 entrance fee, then you have two trailhead options. To get the most bang for your hiking buck, select the one closest to the entrance on Indian Trail vs. the trailhead in the parking area. I’m a fan of this trail for multiple reasons. First off, the hilly terrain provides a challenging hike or trail run. Then, if it’s one of those lingering summer-temperature types of days, the river is a wonderful spot to cool off or fish. But an even more important draw is what you see and experience along the way.

There’s a million-dollar view of the Chattahoochee from an overlook fairly early in the trail. Once you wind your way down to the river, there are ruins of an old mill. Hike a little farther and you’ll come across the bamboo forest I mentioned in this feature’s introduction. But Laurie Ben-Moshe doesn’t let the challenge stop her from enjoying the stand-up paddleboard (SUP) yoga classes offered at Morgan Falls Overlook Park. “I’ve only practiced yoga since April, and for Mother’s Day, my husband gave me a package of SUP yoga classes,” she says. “I would definitely recommend SUP yoga to anyone who loves paddleboarding and yoga, or to anyone who has never paddleboarded but loves yoga. SUP yoga is about being adventurous, challenging oneself and just trying something new.” The 90-minute group classes at

Morgan Falls are offered by Buckhead’s High Country Outfitters. Classes are open to all levels and ages, and begin with instruction on how to properly use a paddleboard and paddle out to the water where the boards are anchored. The rest of the class is spent practicing yoga on the floating board. Participants can include the rental of a board, paddle and lifejacket in the cost of the class ($40), or bring their own ($25). “So many Atlantans have no idea how close they are to water, trails and the peace of being outdoors,” says Caroline Peters, one of the SUP instructors, who also teaches classes at Infinity Yoga in Brookhaven. “Yoga just makes sense outside. There are no distractions, and the simple sound

of the wind and the warmth of the sun remind you to breathe easy. hile living in San Francisco, Kevin McCauley and his wife had a plot at a community garden. When they moved to Atlanta, they wanted to recreate that experience. “We loved it because it gave us a chance to play in the dirt in the city with a great community of gardeners,” McCauley says. His idea came to life at Buckhead’s Blue Heron Nature Preserve (BHNP). The entirely organic garden (no pesticides are used) was first planted in 2006 and includes 32 plots that individuals can maintain. They plant everything from flowers to vegetables to herbs throughout the plots and are able to keep the produce for themselves. (Any produce that gardeners

don’t want is contributed to the Crossroads Kitchen at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Peachtree Street in Midtown.) “It’s the ‘community’ in community gardening that I find most rewarding,” McCauley says. “People from all over our neighborhood, from novice to master gardeners, come together to share their interest in gardening and form friendships along the way.” Just ask Patricia Stern, a founding member. “I got involved with the garden because Kevin McCauley was a friend of mine,” says Stern, a Buckhead resident. “In addition to being an avid gardener, what I love is that I’ve made some very close friends there. One of my garden friends, Lorna, moved to

This relationship was planted and grew at the garden.” n Community garden workdays are scheduled for the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon, and members of the public are invited to come and help out. INWARD REFLECTION A RUGGED OUTDOOR ADVENTURE TEACHES AN AT-RISK LOCAL TEENAGER VALUABLE LIFE LESSONS STORY: Ethan Hayes Saying I had an interesting summer is an understatement. While most 16-year-olds take the summer as a time to relax, spend time with friends, and indulge in technology, I (and seven other at-risk teens) had quite a different experience: Outward Bound, a 28-day wilderness expedition on the Suwannee and St. Johns rivers in Florida. Throughout the course, our objective seemed quite simple: Paddle by canoe in the blazing hot sun (down an equally hot river), scout your campsite, set up your tents and prepare your “meal.” Then, ready our exhausted selves for sleep. Sounds easy, right? The storms, a month without a shower, paddling until four o’clock in the morning, body rashes, moldy food, and defecating in a bucket added some difficulty, to say the least. What was even more difficult was the emotional reflection the seven strangers and I were encouraged to share with each other throughout the course. See, everyone attending my course had a personal struggle of some sort. Mine was issues at school and behavior at home. It was up to our four instructors to guide us out of the negative pathway our lives were headed in through a combination of conversation and physical challenges that come hand-in-hand with the course. While doing that, they taught us life skills I’ll always hold on to. For example, time management. Every task had a “time goal.” We had two minutes to get our nighttime attire on, 45 minutes to set up our campsite. This made even the simplest of tasks seem urgent. I apply this to my life now, and I cannot remember the last time it took me more than 15 minutes to get ready for school in the morning. I also benefited from our instructors constantly pushing assertive commu-

nication into our everyday interaction. I was permitted to make requests as long as I was concise, did not become emotionally escalated and remained patient with the others involved. These proper, non-aggressive communication skills have already helped me in all aspects of my life. Not all of the experiences were schooling, however. Some of my favorite moments were swimming, playing quick games and solving riddles. I found the most enjoyment in talking with my peers, sharing thoughts I would not normally share even with the people I love most. It’s not easy sharing your life with anyone, let alone a group of people you just met. We all grew together, and those strangers at the start of the course became my family near the end. As you can imagine, this course was also physically challenging. When we completed it, we had paddled a whopping 144 miles, in the hot sun and through summer thunderstorms. Sharing your inner self is intimidating, yet rewarding—a word that I think best summarizes my Outward Bound experience. In the end I was emotionally drained, beaten down and exhausted, but beyond proud of what I’d accomplished. I recommend Outward Bound to anyone, and if the opportunity ever comes your way to experience it, take it. There are programs available all over the country, for various age groups (adults and teens) and interests (hiking, rock climbing, rafting, etc.). As for my experience, it was absolutely life changing. For garden enthusiasts, the Cherokee Garden Library is a haven of flora and fauna facts. On Wednesday, Oct. 14, the library will celebrate 40 years of gardening through education by hosting Ken Druse for an informative and illustrative lecture. Starting at 7 p.m., Druse will teach guests about the most natural plant combinations for beginning and veteran gardens. With 18 books under his garden belt, as well as a riveting radio show and podcast, Druse is a leading expert on plants that make the best pairs. Honoring Hunger Action Month and supporting the fight against hunger, the event, which raised approximately $7,000, included an eye-catching show on the catwalk that paraded the fashions of Theory, Alice and Olivia, Hugo Boss, Ted Baker and more. Former WSB-TV anchor Monica Pearson served as mistress of ceremonies while guests sipped on The Tango Twist, a specialty cocktail created for the event by The Wrecking Bar. There was also an open dialogue on the work ACFB is doing in the community. Proceeds from tickets sales went in line with the organization’s mission to aid those in need of proper nutrition in 29 counties in metro Atlanta and North Georgia. ACFB accumulates more than 60 million pounds of food and groceries each year to fulfill its daily mission of stocking food pantries, night shelters, childcare centers, senior centers and community kitchens. ore than 100 gathered at the InterContinental Buckhead for a brunch aimed at mentoring and encouraging the next generation. The event was part of the 10th annual LudaDay Weekend, a charity event that supports rapper and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges’ The Ludacris Foundation. Youth from various Atlanta schools and organizations—Carrie Steele-Pitts Home, Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta Centers of Hope and Banneker High School (Bridges’ alma mater)—attended two youth empowerment brunches, one for young ladies and the other for young men. While enjoying a spread of breakfast goodies, including frittatas, scones and farm-fresh scrambled eggs, attendees took time for discussion and relationship building, and shared inspiring stories of courage and success. Several notable names in attendance included Ludacris Foundation President Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and his wife Eudoxie Bridges, president of nonprofit Unspoken Angels. First Lady of Atlanta Sarah-Elizabeth Reed, entertainer Raven Symone, actor Larenz Tates and NBA basketball player Josh Powell were also in the house.
