APP OF THE MONTH IRRITATING APP FORCES YOU OUT OF BED The gist: Are you finding it more and more difficult to wake up
while it’s still dark outside? Perhaps you need a more sadistic alarm clock. The “I Can’t Wake Up” app will force you awake by making you complete certain tasks before turning off the alarm. These tasks include solving math equations, playing a memory game, repeating a click sequence, rewriting randomly generated text, shaking your phone until you feel awake, and connecting word pairs. However, the best — or worst — task, depending on how you look at it, is scanning a barcode. Set it to accept only the barcode on your milk container, and you will be forced into the kitchen every morning just to shut off your alarm. The free version is of the app, available on both iOS and Android, is supported by ads; an ad-free version is available for $2.99.
The cons: Some Galaxy S5 smartphone users are reporting that the app force-closes in the middle of the night. Make sure to use a back-up alarm the first few mornings to ensure everything works properly.

experienced a lifelong struggle and are ready to take the steps to assist them in controlling their weight. A variety of both surgical and nonsurgical weight-loss options are available at Heartland Surgical Care. One of the safest and most popular surgical weight-loss solutions is the LapBand, and Dr. Lopez has performed more than 1,800 of these procedures. The Lap-Band is minimally invasive, has fewer associated complications than gastric bypass, and is the only adjustable, reversible surgical option. Unlike other procedures that create a permanent structural change, the Lap-Band is purely restrictive in nature. Dr. Lopez encourages his patients to view the Lap-Band as a lifelong tool to assist them with their weight loss together with appropriate changes in their lifestyle such as eating and exercise. Another surgical weight-loss solution is the laprocopic sleeve gastrectomy. Permanent and more invasive than the LapBand, this procedure involves removing a large portion of the stomach and reducing it to about 25 percent of its original size. Dr. Lopez reports that this is an ideal procedure for patients who suffer from diabetes because it can bring rapid improvement to the point where insulin or medication may no longer be needed.

PERSONALIZED WEIGHT-LOSS AND ANTI-AGING STRATEGIES FOR THE NEW YEAR BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Kelly Chamberlain
A new year brings with it new determination that this is going to be the year you finally [insert goal here]. If your goal includes tackling a persistent weight problem, Dr. Jesse Lopez and the staff of Heartland Surgical Care are here to help make that happen. Dr. Lopez, board certified as a general surgeon through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and board eligible through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, has a passion for helping individuals who have

Maybe you’ve already had bariatric procedures such as the Lap-Band, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric bypass and feel as though the outcome was less successful than you’d hoped it would be. Not to worry. The staff at Heartland Surgical Care is experienced in helping patients who did not receive the one-on-one follow-up with their surgeon that would have assisted them in being as successful in their efforts as possible. For those who prefer a nonsurgical weight loss solution, Heartland Surgical Care offers a number of conservative options that Dr. Lopez says have worked well for his patients. One of these options is phentermine, which suppresses the appetite and increases the metabolism. Also available is a newer medication called Belviq, which causes early satiety or satisfaction with eating, so a person loses weight by eating less. Another option is human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which works by decreasing the appetite. “Small amounts of HCG have been shown to mobilize abnormal fat and make it available to the body as a source of energy and nutrients,” explains Dr. Lopez. “This gives patients access to adequate amounts of energy because the rest of the calories are generated internally through the breakdown of fat deposits, a process known as lipolysis. Therefore, the patient is not hungry and loses weight.”
This decrease in appetite that enables weight loss results in a decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Patients who are on the HCG protocol also follow a low-calorie, high-protein, moderate-carbohydrate, low-fat diet. Dr. Lopez stresses that follow-up with a physician is important not only for insuring the patient’s safety but for monitoring the patient’s progress.
Dr. Jesse Lopez has a passion for helping individuals who have experienced a lifelong struggle and are ready to take the steps to assist them in controlling their weight. One of the questions about HCG that Dr. Lopez says he is often asked is whether men can take HCG, and if women can take it without increasing their risk of becoming pregnant. The answer to both questions, he says, is yes. It is simply a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. And unlike weight-loss surgery, which requires a patient to fall within certain parameters in order to be eligible, Dr. Lopez points out that anyone is a candidate for the use of HCG.

Mama Resch’s is a gluten-free and allergen-friendly bakery. We specialize in hand-crafted small batch breads and gourmet sweets and treats.
Bioidentical hormone therapy, which replaces hormones normally produced by the body, is also available for both men and women. This type of therapy is useful for premenopausal women who experience hot f lashes, menstrual cramps, migraines, and irritability, and studies have found it can help to prevent uterine cancer, breast cancer, and blood clots. In men, bioidentical hormone therapy reverses symptoms of what Dr. Lopez refers to as “the grumpy old man syndrome,” in which they feel fatigued, may have decreased fat metabolism, and a decreased sex drive. Misleading advertising suggests this is a problem of low testosterone only, and while low testosterone does play a role, Dr. Lopez notes that it is also a condition of too much estrogen in men, which most Low T Centers don’t properly test or treat. Hormone-replacement therapy acts to reverse these symptoms, improving their overall sense of well-being.

EMBRACE YOUR CREATIVE SIDE AT PAINT GLAZE & FIRE CERAMICS & COFFEE HOUSE BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Carmen Carver
You go to work. You pay the bills. You sleep. Routine can make life seem a little mundane. A paintbrush can fix that. A few hours at Paint Glaze & Fire Ceramics & Coffee House will get those creative juices f lowing and help reinvigorate you. “It’s so much fun watching people come in and open their package of finished pottery. The look of surprise at how different and nice it looks after being fired in the kiln always puts a smile on my face,” says Debbie Wright, owner of Over-

land Park-based Paint Glaze & Fire Ceramics & Coffee House. Wright has watched unique and beautiful pieces of art leave her store for more than 10 years. Professional artists do not create them. Instead, moms, children, grandparents, and even dads have fun painting pottery. “The mom in me loves the baby handprint designs,” she says. “One person used paint chips to create a mountain landscape. Another captured their child’s artwork by outlining it with a paint pen. I have also seen a teacup cake topper made by the bride for her wedding cake.” It’s more than just painting pottery. It’s the time shared with friends and family and the keepsakes they have to remember special events. As the name suggests, Paint Glaze & Fire Ceramics & Coffee House is a gathering place. Adults and children come to paint ceramics, which are later glazed and fired in kilns kept on location. The full-service coffee house offers coffee, smoothies, and protein shakes. Wright says the kiddos love the cookie smoothies. Painting a ceramic pottery piece is an easy process. There is a studio fee per session ($6 for kids and $8 for adults) that cov-
ers paint, glaze, firing, supplies, and tools. You choose from a large variety of pottery, such as figurines, a favorite among children, and coffee mugs. The cost of each piece depends on the size and shape of the item.
“If you can hold a paint brush, we can help you have fun painting.” — Debbie Wright
In addition to pottery, Paint Glaze & Fire offers glass fusion, which are pieces of glass “melted” together. These pieces can be molded into different shapes. Group canvas painting classes are also available.

After picking out the pottery you want to decorate, you find a seat and load up on paint. Grab a brush, a stencil, or even use your fingertips. You’re not an adult anymore. Inspiration is everywhere. You are free to steal ideas from the artwork displayed or browse idea books. The relaxed atmosphere allows you to chat with your friends or take your time helping your kids. When you’ve finished your piece, a staff member will take it to be glazed and fired in a kiln. Once the ceramic is in the kiln, it goes through a heating and cooling process that takes 24 hours. You will receive a phone call to let you know you can pick up your masterpiece, usually within seven to 10 days. The pottery is safe to eat and drink from, but Wright recommends treating it like fine China. Refrain from putting it in the dishwasher or microwave.

HOME & GARDEN Preventing your goods from going bad can be tricky business. The individual nature of each type of fruit and vegetable seemingly requires flowcharts with all kinds of addendums and exceptions. Just check out The Kitchn’s page on how to store produce — there is a link to every variety. Who knew there were so many nuances to unloading the groceries? Can’t you just throw everything into the crisper and move on with your life? If you’re cool with sludgy lettuce leaves, carry on. But if you want to plate up crunchy carrots and perfect peppers, you’ll need to heed some advice.
Buy less more often Few of us have the time to stop in at the supermarket more than once a week. But out of the ground or off the tree, produce has a limited lifespan, sometimes falling into ruin before your next scheduled trip to the store. Thus, your shopping habits may require a new strategy. If you can swing it, try a quick midweek run for the freshest of ingredients. If not, alter the way you shop. First, think backwards. Every grocer displays produce at the front of the store, but if you start there, your perishables will begin to perish before they’ve been swiped at checkout. Second, if you have other errands to run before going home, consider toting along a cooler in the car. Third, after the goodies are safely stashed in the fridge, eat the most perishable ones first.

Your gleaming Sub-Z does more than contribute to the high-end aesthetics of your kitchen — it keeps your food cold, which slows your veggies’ respiration and subsequent deterioration. Set the temperature between 36 and 38 degrees for optimal results and keep produce away from the back wall, where it may get frosty. Condiments are best suited for the doors, which are more exposed to fluctuations in temperature; meat should go on the bottom level. Crisper drawers are where your produce belongs. They can maintain some beneficial humidity for keeping produce from drying out.
General guidelines
•
K eep fruits and vegetables whole until you’re ready to use them, as cutting them
or removing stems invites microorganisms and decay. moisture will bring a blight • Excess
to your crop. Do not wash your food before storing it unless it is completely dry. The exceptions here are mushrooms and berries, which should never be washed until right before use.
need to breathe, so while most • Veggies
experts recommend encasing them in plastic, keep it loose or you may suffocate your lettuce into an unrecognizable heap. For that item in particular, wrap unwashed leaves in a paper towel to absorb moisture then return lettuce to its wrapping. A two-minute ice bath may help revive wilted greens.

out, so try standing it upright in a pitcher of water inside the fridge. (You can do the same with your herbs by putting them in a cup of water.) But if these veggies are bent on going limp, cut them up and make some soup.
• If you see mold on produce, remove the offending item immediately to
prevent it from contaminating others. Spoiled produce, as well as other kitchen scraps, should be tossed in a compost pile, not the garbage can.
Those addendums and veggies need to be stored • Fruits
separately in crisper drawers and then more so in individual plastic baggies. Some fruits produce ethylene, a ripening agent that will quickly deteriorate other perishables around. Keep apples, bananas, and stone fruits to themselves and especially away from ethylene-sensitive items, including asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, lettuce, and peppers. On the other hand, if you want to ripen produce, stick it in a paper bag with an apple and in a day or two, it will be ready.
like peppers and grapes need to • Items
be instantly, constantly refrigerated or they will be ruined, while others such as avocadoes, melons, tomatoes, and pears will ripen if left out.
French Maker
everything needs to be cooled. • Not
Potatoes, winter squash, onions, garlic, and ginger can be stored in a dark, dry cabinet, preferably separately so their smells don’t mingle. Fruits that are sensitive to cold should be stored on a countertop or hanging basket until ripe, then you can move them into the fridge to extend their life.
There’s always the freezer If you can’t eat produce while it’s fresh, freeze it before it rots. Blanching vegetables first destroys the enzymes that would otherwise break them down. Simply start a pot of boiling water and add one batch of veggies at a time. Cook times will vary from one to six minutes, depending on the density and size of your veggie. Immediately plunge into ice water then drain well. Frozen states don’t last forever, though, so eat up within six months.

PHOTOGRAPHER BRINGS NEW LIFE TO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY EDWARDS
Photography is a craft that takes years to perfect, and Nicole Bissey, photographer and owner of Nicole Bissey Photography, has been perfecting it from a young age. Bissey started her business about five years ago, and made it her full-time passion about a year and a half ago. She focuses on weddings — and its obvious by her skillfully constructed photographs that she is no stranger to portrait photography. “I have had a camera in my hands since I was 4 years old,” Bissey says. “My parents would send me on field trips with Fujifilm disposable cameras, and while everyone else was taking photos with

their friends, I was focused on taking pictures of my surroundings.” After immersing herself in photography throughout her childhood, Bissey chose to attend a college in Chicago and focus on graphic design. However, a speed bump in the road redirected her focus to photography. “One of the required classes I took was a photography class,” she says. “My teacher actually failed me, which made me more determined to be a photographer. I quit school, moved home, and began studying under any photographer who was interested in letting me work with them.” Her experience in the field has helped shape her business into what it is today. She books daylong shoots for weddings, committing to being there from start to finish — something many photographers just don’t do, she says, and offers free engagement sessions for each wedding package to help her get to know couples. Bisseys says she starts photographing from the moment hair and makeup starts and doesn’t leave until the party winds down. Bissey focuses on cultivating relationships with each of her subjects, which is ref lected in her photographs and in the feedback she
receives from her clients. Briana James, one of Bissey’s recent clients, says she was delighted to work with her. “I cannot say enough about how amazing Nicole was. She was professional, personable, and fit in perfectly with our wedding party,” James says. “She was with us all day and, not only did she do every shot I wanted, but she listened to everyone’s suggestions. By the end of the night, I didn’t want her to leave.” The relationships Bissey forms with her clients is more than just a photographer and client. “By the end of the wedding day with my couples, I hope to practically call them friends — and the majority of the time, they tell me they feel like we are,” Bissey says. Not only does she strive to create a comfortable environment for her clients, but every day, she strives to improve her craft. “My favorite quote is by photographer Imogen Cunningham: ‘Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow,’” Bissey shares. “I have learned to never settle with my photography, and to always strive for tomorrow’s work to be better than yesterday’s.” For future newlyweds, her biggest advice in looking for a photographer is to meet in person.
“It is very important that you and your photographer ‘click,’” she explains. “If you have a personality clash, it will show in your photos and you will look as uncomfortable as you feel.” In addition to weddings, Bissey offers general portrait photography, including kids and senior portrait sessions. She loves photographing children, she says, and enjoys watching them grow. One of her favorite memories, in fact, was of a little girl who refused to take photographs without her doll, “Sally.” “The girl’s mom whispered to me that if we could get any photos without Sally, she would appreciate it, but she knew it would be tough, so she didn’t expect any,” Bissey says. Bissey took a few photos of the girl with Sally, but eventually made a suggestion that changed the entire session. “I told the little girl that Sally wanted to watch her get her picture taken by herself,” Bissey recalls. “I sat Sally in a prop chair next to me, and the little girl took all of her photos without any complaints — even giving big smiles for Sally. The smile on her mom’s face was exciting enough — but then the girl came up to me, hugged me around my knees, and said, ‘I want to be a photographer just like you when I grow up.’ “I don’t think I’ll ever forget that session,” Bissey shares. HEALTH & BEAUTY
BY KARAN BAUCOM, MD, FACOG, FAARM / GUEST COLUMNIST
Hot Flashes, Mood Swings, and Sweats, Oh My!
At the first or early signs of the “change of life,” there is usually denial. I’m not old enough. My sex drive going down is because I’m just tired. Women know as they age that menopause is coming, and many hope that it will be over quickly. Hate to break it to you, but menopause typically lasts many years. Only in rare occurrences does menopause go quickly. The loss of these vital hormones is a slow process, taking an average of 10 to 20 years, from premenopause to postmenopause.
32
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
THE STAGES OF MENOPAUSE
Age 35-45: Perimenopause Around the change yet still having periods. Symptoms include depression, insomnia, hot flashes, night sweats, moody or irritable, anxiety, PMS.
Age 45-55: Menopause No periods for one full year. Symptoms include night sweats, thinning hair, weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, moderate depression, urinary incontinence, low libido, early bone loss, osteopenia.
Age 55-65: Postmenopausal No periods for two full years. If bleeding occurs, it must be investigated for pre-cancer
or cancer of the uterus. Symptoms vary — hormone level is extremely low but not gone completely. May still have depression, anxiety, weight gain, hair loss. Or no symptoms at all, but may have osteoporosis. HORMONAL CHANGES Hormones are messengers that tell our bodies how to work efficiently. They are at their optimal levels for women between the ages of 19 to 35. After 35 however, we see a gradual fall in our hormone levels. Symptoms of menopause vary for each woman, although common symptoms include weight gain, depression, memory loss, lack of sex drive, hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia,
which can lead to irritability because of lack of sleep. As hormones wane, the symptoms can become severe. Everyone knows these signs and symptoms of menopause. Jokes are made about this very important change, but nothing about it is funny. Many women do suffer greatly. Some people believe this is just what is supposed to happen as we age. It is not! There are many treatments, from lifestyle adjustments to hormone therapy, that can help with these symptoms. The best way to move through these menopausal years is to educate yourself so you can have an informed dialogue with your physician. RELIEVING THE SYMPTOMS Hormonal supplementation, if done correctly, will take away all of the symptoms and signs of menopause. The saliva test is the most reliable way to test hormone levels. Once the
:
results are in, you have many options for replacement. Some of the products available are in the form of creams, patches, pellets, tablets, and gels. Discuss with your physician which is best for you. Keep in mind: You should not take estrogen in an oral form, and should make sure it is always accompanied with some type of progesterone, whether you have you a uterus or not. Another option is bio-identical hormones, which are actual human hormones. But, often, women are afraid to use bio-identical hormones to support this very erratic time of their life journey because of confusion about the best options or what options are actually available. Making sure you have the best doctor is imperative if you are interested in bio-identical hormone therapy. Most OBGYNs are trained in traditionally synthetic treatments for menopause, so make sure to find a doctor who has had additional training
specific to bio-identical hormones and who understands the difference. Doctors with a specialty in age-management medicine usually will look at all of your hormones, your other glands, nutrition, lifestyle, and goals for quality of aging. And it’s always great to be as informed as possible. Try reading The Sexy Years, by Suzanne Somers along with Dr. Johnson Wright (father of bio-identical hormones),which explores hormones and options, and is written in layman-friendly language. You also may want to check out baucominstitute.com, my website. I have developed it as a learning tool for people interested in bio-available hormone therapy. In the end, be your own health-care advocate. Develop a partnership with your health-care provider. Your journey through menopause can be navigated smoothly and safely with fantastic results.

Cost-Cutting Tips From a Professional Wedding Planner
BY BRIDGET MASON HESS
Love is in the air, as they say. Many couples get engaged during the holiday season, which, for many of them, means the winter months also are the beginning of a whirlwind of wedding planning and decisions about how they will celebrate the beginning of their lives together. 34
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
I recently sat down with a friend and local wedding planner extraordinaire, Kim Ho, of You’re Invited Wedding and Event Planning (yiplanning.wordpress.com). Kim has planned more than 100 local weddings since she started her business in 2003, so she knows a thing or two about creating that perfect wedding day — and the low down on what it costs.
What would you estimate to be the average cost of weddings in Kansas City? What I see the most of is $25,000 to $35,000. However, that doesn’t mean there are not many weddings lower and many weddings higher. It all depends on the overall headcount and reception location selected.
Of that total amount, which element of the wedding costs the most? The reception, by all means, is the most expensive part. Food and beverage are really
the big factors. Always add an extra 30 percent to the calculations for catering to cover taxes, service fees, and sometimes rentals.
In what ways can couples curb costs and stay within a budget? First, don’t just purchase at first sight. Calculate all of your costs for the reception before committing to a venue. The reception venue will truly dictate your budget and what you decide to do with decorating costs, host bar versus cash bar, catering, etc. Second, put together a detailed budget (or pay a wedding planner to make one for you). Use this as a reference when selecting vendors. Third, put aside a separate fund for that weekend alone — breakfast, lunch, miscellaneous last-minute needs, tipping, etc.
What are the most unexpected or surprising costs when planning a wedding? Photography and last-minute needs such as tipping. A good photographer is not cheap. However, in my opinion, photogra-
phy is one of the most important elements on the wedding day. It’s what you walk away with and keep for years to come. Also, most people forget about the tipping portion until it gets close to the wedding time, as well as the other items, which come into play in those final two weeks.
So you’re saying couples should never, ever skimp on the photographer. Definitely! And also, a “day of ” coordinator — someone who will relieve the stress of the bride, family, and friends by taking on the details of the weekend and making sure everything runs smoothly, or fixes it when it doesn’t.
You mentioned hiring a wedding planner. What are the benefits of going that route? A wedding planner can help couples figure out a way to cut costs such as re-using items to save on decorating. For example, bridal
bouquets as centerpieces instead of paying for additional centerpieces. We also know which vendors charge less than others and will actually save time in the research process.
Speaking of venues, what are some more affordable options couples might not think of? If budget is a factor, look for venues that have low food and beverage minimums or venues that allow you to bring in your own food and beverage.
What about the time of year? Is there a more affordable season to get married? January, February, and March tend to be the slowest times of the year for weddings. Fall is incredibly busy in Kansas City.
food, or drink options? Instead of selecting particular flowers, which can be out of season and more costly, couples can always look at in-season blooms in the same color or style. For beverages, couples can bring in their own drinks from a local liquor store — there are several that will help put together an order based on wants and needs. This can save thousands of dollars. But couples must make sure the venue allows it. For food, it’s dependent upon the caterer and what rentals a couple needs. Service can be expensive, so they definitely need to be aware of catering service charges. Couples also can save a few dollars here and there based on how many rentals they need. For example, they could use a plastic plate instead of china to hold the cake and glass plates for serving. Or they can have glassware at the tables but use nice plastic at the bars.
Finally, can you offer some insider tips on saving some cash on flower,

PARENTING
10 WAYS TO MAKE IT A FUN-FILLED WINTER BY BRIDGET MASON HESS
Kiss cabin fever goodbye and be a super-cool parent with these winter boredom busters your kids will love. And consider this your permission to ignore your task list for a while and jump in there to play with them — you’ll be glad you did.
1
SNOW FUN Just because winter weather has arrived doesn’t
mean the outdoors is off-limits. Get the whole family outside to hike, sled, and play in the snow. The cold, fresh air and exercise can be exhilarating and mood-boosting. What’s more, pulling the kids around on a sled and shoveling the driveway also are excellent calorie burners, so don’t feel guilty that you indulged in a few too many Christmas cookies.
2
DANCE PARTY Crank up some fun tunes and swing your
munchkins around. Kids of all ages love to dance — and when mom and dad get into it too, even the big kids will be encouraged to shirk their “too-cool” attitudes and bust a move. This is another great mood-booster and a way to warm up inside on a cold, dreary winter day.
3
EPIC FORTS My kids love to build forts, yet I admit I can be
a grump about letting them pull off all of the couch cushions and yank multiple sheets out of the linen closet. However, it often entertains them for hours, and the mess truly isn’t hard to clean up. Let them build that fort!
4
CRAFTY KIDS When’s the last time you put together a puzzle
as a family or got your hands dirty with paint, Play-doh, or glue? Puzzles and crafts are important for brain-building and improving kids’ fine motor skills.
36
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
5
WHAT’S COOKING Get the kids involved in cooking a big
pot of soup or baking something from scratch. If they are old enough, charge them with reading the recipe, measuring ingredients, and even with cleaning up the mess. They will learn something new and will be proud to eat the feast they create.
6
ADVENTURE TIME This is the time of year many of us yearn for
a trip to somewhere sunny and warm. Whether or not a vacation fits into your schedule and budget this winter, mapping out and researching a trip is an educational and fun project for school-aged kids. Allow them to choose a “destination” to find on an atlas and research what that city has to offer — how far away is their destination? Which direction would they fly or drive to get there, and how long would it take? What would they do there? Where could they stay? While younger kids might want to draw a picture related to their destination, older youth might research hotels and tourist attractions.
7
CHANNEL AN ARCHITECT Let the kids use their imaginations
by helping them build a mini-city complete with townspeople, roads, houses, a school, fire department, or store — the sky’s the limit. Encourage them to pull out toys they haven’t played with lately and use construction paper, matchbox cars, tissue boxes, or anything you have around to create something they’ll find exciting and fun to play with. When we build mini-cities, the action figures and train set that my kids rarely play with suddenly become like brand-new toys.
8
Book a Clay Handprint party in January and receive
15% off Party must be held before 3/31/15. Minimum 8 painters required.
paintglazeandfire.net 127th & Metcalf • Overland Park, KS
ACT IT OUT Assign your kids with the task of writing their own
play or talent show to perform. Have them make tickets, set up chairs, and wear costumes. My kids had a ton of fun on a snow day last winter creating a “show” to perform for the cousins across town via FaceTime.
9
Leave a great impression on your birthday guests!
Every treatment is safe, effective & educational.
CLASSIC GAMING Instead of the typical movie night, how
about quality family bonding while playing cards, a board game, or even charades? In addition to being fun, playing games can improve memory and analytical-thinking skills, as well as being a tool for helping younger kids practice math and reading.
10
OUT AND ABOUT If your family life is anything like
mine, it’s always busy. Winter weekends tend to be a tad less hectic than other times of year, however, so they are a good time to plan a few outings. Consider a visit to the art museum, bowling alley, trampoline park, or indoor pool. Come up with a “winter bucket list” of some places around town your family would like to go, and take a different field trip each weekend throughout the winter months.

OUR WORLD BY MARY EDWARDS
January seems to have become synonymous with blustery winds and bone-chilling cold rather than the romantic thoughts of Snuggies by the warm fire. Yet, the negative of January doesn’t stop at just the snow and ice — the energy consumption is also high due to the frosty temperatures.

STAY WARM, SAVE MONEY
However, there are many things you can do to help keep a household warm in the winter months. Here are a few tips to keep yourself warm throughout January: •U se portable heaters to stay toasty without warming the entire house. Dyson, Vornado, and DeLonghi offer great energysaving space heaters. Although they’ll cost a bit upfront, they’ll save you money in the long run. •C over windows with insulated treatments. Cover windows with plastic wrap
to insulate rooms, or consider hanging curtains over windows — especially in rooms with a lot of them. The curtains will help keep the cold air out and the warm air in. An added plus: The curtains will be beneficial in the summer months too, by blocking the sun’s hot rays. •C lose off rooms you don’t use often. Make sure to shut vents and doors to keep the warm air flow in the rooms you actually spend time in.

MIND & BODY
BY JULIE BURTON
A Lifetime of Learning
“I invite you to take your tassels, flip them, and toss your hats in the air. You did it!” We have all heard the commencement speech while wearing our caps and gowns. For most of us, the commencement signaled the ending of our high school or college careers and the beginning of the rest of our lives. We left with a grade point average high enough to earn a degree. But that commencement address didn’t signal the end of our educations. Although we’re not graded anymore, we are always still learning and growing.

Two experts on how we learn, Dr. Alison Banikowski, deputy superintendent of the Olathe School District, and Sandy Gonsher, recognized master teacher of 2012 and professor at Rockhurst University, know why you should strive to be a lifelong learner. Simply put, it shapes who you are. When something unexpected happens in life, whether it’s good or devastating, our minds turn into creative problem-solvers. You could be adding a new ingredient to a recipe or dealing with a loss because of suicide. The human mind navigates challenges in a natural, optimistic way. Being open to all challenges is why you should be a lifelong learner, Gonsher explains.
Cultivate the learning habit Educate yourself. Take a few classes. They don’t have to end in a degree. According to the U.S. Census, fewer than 2 percent of Americans have a doctorate degree. Formal education is important
but not essential to keep learning. “For me, constant learning takes the form of many avenues and formats, from interacting with my colleagues, presenting on a topic — you always learn when you have to teach — reading a professional book, or participating in a conference,” Dr. Banikowski says. The Olathe School District holds annual conferences, which provides cutting-edge national presenters and quality local speakers to set the stage for best practices. Many businesses and employers in the Kansas City area offer professional training workshops such as this. When it comes to having a successful career, it is beneficial to master one subject — but having a little bit of knowledge across

many subjects encourages a deeper understanding, she notes.
Always listen and ask questions. Gonsher says that in order to keep learning, your questions could sometimes be more important than the answers. It’s not always finding out what you want to know; it’s about moving forward in thought. Use a question as a way to imply a conversation. Good conversationalists are great listeners. Think like a child, she says. Children are constantly asking questions because they are absorbing and learning. This can help gain colorful perspectives about the world.

should always take an opportunity to learn something new, she says, but more importantly, you need to discover how to compel yourself to do it. You don’t need to know how to go camping if you have never been before — just having the will to do it is a learning experience. GOOD TASTES

Spicy Soup
to Warm You Up
The word of the day? Posole.
Posole
Posole is a yummy Mexican soup made with a special type of corn called hominy. Think of it as a slightly spicy Mexican chicken soup (although it can be made with pork too). You can add all sorts of veggies to it and adapt the spiciness to your family’s taste. And, even better, you can do it all in your Crock-Pot! It’s delish and a nice change from some of the heavy soups and stews typically made in the slow cooker. Our whole family liked this dish. The kids just called it Mexican chicken soup, but hey, they ate it. Posole! It’s what’s for dinner!
Yield: 4 to 6 servings
Ingredients
Directions
1 can (15 oz.) yellow or white hominy,
In a 4 quart or larger slow cooker, combine the hominy, tomatoes, enchilada sauce, carrots, onions, garlic, and cumin. Add the uncooked chicken and stir to combine. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred. Stir the chicken back into the slow cooker. Add chicken broth and return to heat just until warm.
drained (usually found in Mexican food aisle) 1 can (10.5 oz) Rotel tomatoes 1 can (10 oz.) mild green enchilada sauce 2 medium carrots, diced 1 medium onion, chopped 3 to 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons cumin 1-1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast halves 32 ounces chicken broth
Serve in bowls. Top with cilantro and serve with lime wedges and tortilla chips.
Chopped cilantro, optional Lime wedges, optional Tortilla chips, optional

About Face: The Best Sunglasses for Your Face These days, the sunglasses we wear are just as important as our handbags. Not only do they protect our eyes and faces from the effects of the sun, but they also can make a huge fashion statement. Most people tend to buy glasses based on the frame — but are they the right shape for your face? Here are a few tips to follow when picking out your next pair of sunnies. IF YOUR FACE IS HEART-SHAPED Those with a wide forehead, narrower jaw line, high cheekbones, and a narrow chin should go for a frame that is wider on the top than the bottom, like a cat-eye, wayfarer, or the clubmaster style from Ray-Ban. IF YOUR FACE IS OVAL Lucky you! With a rounded forehead and chin of equal size, your face shape is balanced. You can wear almost any type of sunglasses. Keep proportion in mind and try not to go too big or too small for your face. This modern cat-eye by Prada is a fresh take on a classic style. IF YOUR FACE IS ROUND A round face is defined by a soft, circular shape in which the width and length are almost equal. Go for an oversized square or wayfarer style to set off the roundness. How amazing is this wayfarer style with leather sides by Burberry? IF YOUR FACE IS SQUARE A square face is defined by strong, well-defined angles in the forehead, cheeks, and jawline. To soften these features, opt for sunnies with soft lines or rimless edges like these by Tom Ford. Find all of these styles at Romanelli Sun Galleria (romanellioptix.com) in Park Place. 5261 W. 116th Place in Leawood.

WAYS
to begin the new year right 1 Toss the old spice.
Have you had your ground spices for more than 12 months? If you’re not sure, just smell them — if there is no scent, there will be no flavor.
2 Sleep more soundly
… by replacing your bed pillow. If it doesn’t support your neck, it’s time for a new one.
3 Tidy up your ride.
Say goodbye to the empty food bags, lost kids’ toys, orphaned gloves, and scratched mix CDs. Vacuum the dirt that accumulated over the summer and make sure you have extra blankets in the trunk … for just in case.
4 Refresh your decor.
2
No extreme home makeover needed. Simply swap the shams, update the photos in the picture frames, replace items in your decorative bowl, or paint an accent wall.
5 Get back in touch with professional contacts. Send an email to acquaintances in the same field as you just to say hi and
ask how everything is going. If you’ve noticed they’ve changed companies or passed a career or family milestone, mention it and congratulate them.
6
Discard the stinky sponge. Sponges can harbor so much bacteria. Lower the risk of cross-contamination by microwave-heating damp sponges for a minute or dishwashing them in a drying cycle. If it starts to smell, toss it immediately, says the USDA.
