transported to the Napa Valley. Aubrey Vineyards is proud to provide a Napa-like tasting experience in the KC area. Conveniently located in southeast Overland Park and featuring over 12 acres of scenic vines, visiting Aubrey Vineyards feels like a getaway from city living. Their grapes are grown on a high-wire about six feet off the ground. Through a dedicated process of pruning, the Au-

brey Vineyards staff ensure each vine is trimmed precisely to ensure ideal growth. The plants are netted in July to prevent birds from eating the grapes, and these nets stay until harvest. The Vineyard Tasting Room offers a premier collection of wines which display modern Midwestern winemaking at its best. With Wednesday happy hour specials and live music Thursdays, there are always experiences to enjoy at the vineyard. Be sure to keep an eye out for exclusive wine release parties in the coming months!

“As president, I oversee all aspects of the association, including the promotion of our member restaurants, the fundraising and special events such as our annual golf tournament and GKCRA Day at the K,” she continues. “During the pandemic, the association was crucial for keeping us up-to-date on the ever-changing guidelines. Nothing is more important than assuring the safety of our team members and guests. We administer over $25,000 annually in scholarship support to local deserving students, and further support women in culinary through our annual donation to Les Dames d’Escoffier Scholarships.”

NURSE NAVIGATION HELPS PATIENTS REACH THE RIGHT DESTINATION WRITTEN BY DAVID MARKS

What can you do when you have severe back pain, painkillers aren’t helping, and a health care provider tells you it will be six weeks before you can get an MRI? “I was basically looking at being bedridden for over a month,” said Moden. “But then I got a call that changed everything.”

Moden. “One week later, I had my surgery.” That was six months ago. Since then, Gary’s been able to go skiing and is a regular on the golf course again.

Spine nurse navigator Heather Roy proactively called Gary to ask if the painkillers had helped his condition. As soon as she learned about his situation, she took action. She was able to schedule him to have an MRI on a Friday, less than 48 hours after her call.

“I just can’t express how much I appreciate Heather advocating for me,” said Moden. “She didn’t just ‘talk the talk.’ She ‘walked the walk.’”

“Then she got me a Monday appointment with a neurosurgeon,” said

A nurse navigator is a nurse who plays many roles for the benefit of patients. This includes acting as an educator, advocate, liaison, coach, coordinator, guide, and problem solver. The navigator’s role is to help patients under-

stand their care from the moment of diagnosis to treatment and recovery. From initial diagnosis to surgical repair, nurse navigators work with patients in whatever way is needed to ensure their care is seamless. This could involve anything from working with other specialists involved in the patient’s care to making sure the whole patient is being considered, arranging for physical therapy at the right time, medication education, and ensuring a successful surgery. “As a spine nurse navigator, I have the privilege of being a patient’s guide through the entire health care system, specifically regarding back pain, which so many people experience to a varying degree at any point during their life,” said Roy. “By collaborating with a multitude of specialties as well as primary care providers, I’m able to help patients visit the appropriate health care provider at the right time.” For patients, nurse navigation helps take the guesswork out of preparing for their procedure. They don’t have to be overwhelmed by the logistics. Instead, they can concentrate on building up strength and health for a successful recovery and healing. Of course, not every patient experiencing back and neck problems re-

No matter what kind of medical problem they’re experiencing, the nurse navigator’s job is to build a personal connection with each patient and caregiver by providing continual support and resources to meet the evolving needs of patients along their medical journey. “A major function of my role is informing patients and other care providers about signs and symptoms of spinal conditions—along with connecting patients to a variety of care options,” said Roy. “When I navigate patients, I’m not only there to answer any questions, but provide education about the next steps, help secure and keep appointments, and let them know what to expect.”

“It’s hard to put into words how much I appreciate the treatment I received from Heather and everyone else there,” said Moden. “I’m always happy to recommend AdventHealth.” When you experience debilitating back or neck pain, it can be hard to do the things you enjoy most. But you have every reason to hope for an active future. ince 2009, Healthy Meals, Inc., has been delivering homemade, healthy meals to local customers. Long before food delivery services became such a phenomenon, they found a niche with a growing market of Kansas Citians: people who wanted to lose weight—or those who wanted to eat healthy—but didn’t have time (or didn’t want) to cook the meals themselves. “No other company does what we do to the degree that we do it,” says owner and founder Scott Kluck. “Not only do we customize our clients’ daily caloric intake, we also measure each meal’s macronutrient ratio (the percentage of protein vs. carbs vs. essential fats). is that our clients’ meals are always made fresh and delivered right to their door every single day.” With a focus on individual health, Kluck says Healthy Meals, Inc., works because every plan, every meal, is customized to the individual who will be eating it. When customers sign up, they fill out a detailed questionnaire that helps the brand determine the best ratio for each person to help them reach their goals. It includes age, height, and weight, among other factors, to help create the perfect individual ratio. Things like allergies and aversions are also learned from the questionnaire, Kluck says, so customers will never receive anything to which they have an aversion.

However, that’s not the only perk of the company, Kluck says. There’s also the convenience factor. The ability to eat fresh and healthy, without cooking it or prepping it yourself. In addition, food is delivered each day in a very nice cooler tote bag, so it’s always fresh and ready to go with you. Meal plans range in price and size, depending on the term. Their signature Optimal Meal Plan provides your daily breakfast, a mid-morning snack, lunch, a mid-afternoon snack, and dinner. They also have a Create Your Own Meal Plan, which allows you to pick and choose which meals you want for yourself and even for your family members. “The way you look and feel is the main

reason people seek us out,” the company says. “If you want to be healthy, it starts with what you eat, plain and simple.” To date, Healthy Meals, Inc., has served more than 15,000 customers in the KC metro, including Leawood, Olathe, Lenexa, Mission Hills, Lee’s Summit, Overland Park, Liberty, and more. The brand uses a pre-set five-week rotating menu that changes seasonally, Kluck explains. Not only does this ensure a lot of variety, clients will rarely see the same things twice. Every meal is made by a professional chef, then adapted to dietary and calorie needs, he says. For example, if someone doesn’t like Brussels sprouts, Healthy Meals Inc., will flag their profile and omit the veggie, then give them something they can have instead. Daily, the chefs prepare more than 1,000 meals, with every one being portion-controlled to the specs each client requires.

As far as testimonials, the customers write in regularly to celebrate their weight loss and excitement about the program. “I lost 25 pounds in the last six months!,” said client Kent D. “I truly appreciate the quality of the food, the customer service you provide, and the results I’ve garnered!”

“The food is absolutely amazing and the convenience unmatched.” Another client, Mackenzie V., was sold after her one-week trial. “The food is absolutely amazing and the convenience unmatched.” Kluck says it’s the customer service, among other things, that sets them apart from national food-delivering

companies. After signup, Health Meals, Inc., calls and checks in with clients to see how they are doing, and provides one-on-one attention to ensure each client is getting what they need with the brand, keeping the line of communication open so customers feel free to check in regularly. “We are a locally owned, boutique business. We’ve been doing this for so long,” Kluck says. “Today there are big national companies that don’t really give you the customer service you need. We’re right here in KC and we’re not a franchise, which I think most discerning Kansas Citians appreciate.” To learn more about Healthy Meals, Inc., or to get started, head to their website at healthymealsinc.com. GIVE YOUR SCRAPS A NEW LIFE WITH HOME COMPOSTING WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD

A

re you looking for a way to create environmental change from the comfort of your home? Maybe you understand the negative impact of waste and are searching for a clean solution to give old food, scraps, and other items a new life instead of throwing them in the trash. If this sounds like you, composting might be worth a try. “Composting your food waste is one of the most impactful practices one can take to curb climate change,” said Coco Castle, Director of Operations at Compost Collective KC. If you are interested in composting but

do not have the space or time to try it out, you are not alone. Thankfully, there are ways to utilize composting without taking it on yourself. “Forty percent of the total food supply is currently being wasted in the United States, and Compost Collective KC aims to change that by recycling the city’s scraps into nutrient-dense soil instead,” Castle explained. “Our industrial facility is able to process meat, bones, and dairy as well as paper products like pizza boxes that you couldn’t typically compost at home. Combat climate change in your own kitchen and take action today.”

It can seem impossible to compost if you live in an area that’s lacking yard space, but it’s pretty simple with a little bit of practice. Overthinking the process or avoiding it out of fear helps no one. Turning your scraps into fertilizer is one of the best ways to limit your carbon footprint. EDUCATING YOURSELF ON COMPOSTING IS ESSENTIAL TO YOUR SUCCESS

Composting isn’t something that one can easily attempt to do with no knowledge or planning. With that said, this doesn’t have to be complicated. You can watch a few videos online or check out a book on com-

posting from the library. There are a few basic tips and tricks everyone should know before attempting to compost at home. Understanding what items are welcome in your compost, and which are not is vital to your success. Citrus peels and onions contain a high level of acidity that worms and microorganisms aren’t big fans of. If you are composting at home, it is best to avoid adding in things like meat and cooked food. These can attract pests. If you do want to find a home for these items, try a service like Compost Collective KC. It is better to give them to someone who knows what to do with them rather than throw these items in the trash. Stick to natural and organic materials. Things like fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells, and nutshells are perfect for your home compost. Some people who compost from home may

also have yard waste which can be added in too. You may even be able to throw in old pieces of clothing, but be sure to do your research first. Another vital tip is learning to aerate your compost properly. This will help you avoid creating strong odors that linger. This isn’t always entirely avoidable, but aerating your pile will certainly help.

green and browns. Greens are rich in nitrogen or protein, and browns are going to be your carbohydrate or carbon-rich items.

Before beginning your composting journey, you will need to decide what style you want to utilize. One of the more popular ways of composting is using a worm bin. This style allows you to feed food scraps to worms. It is a fairly simple way to compost, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. If worms aren’t your style, you could opt for tumbler composting or another kind.

It is important to remember that composts are much more than a bucket to toss scraps and unwanted items into. These are living and breathing systems. To create a home compost that works, you need to educate yourself and make use of tips like these. After you give composting a shot and learn the many aspects of the process, you will be just fine.

One thing you may want to consider when composting at home is creating a system for food scraps. By storing your scraps you will be able to create the perfect mix over time rather than throwing everything in at once.

GREENS VS. BROWNS

For your compost to thrive you will need to create a balanced mix of

PARENTING

THE EAGLE HAS LEFT THE BUILDING WRITTEN BY LAUREN DREHER

“Only 10 more years left,” you said as you shut the door after a rough bedtime routine. But fast-forward to dropping your child off at college or watching them drive on to the next chapter of their life, and that may not be the thought running through your head. Instead, you fight back tears because your child is gaining independence by the minute. On the one hand, you’re proud of the young adult they have become. At the same time you pray they make good decisions. What are your next steps? I sought advice from parents who have navigated this new stage of life and are satisfied with their current situation.

EMBRACE THE NEWFOUND FREEDOM

to somewhere you’ve always wanted to live.

One of the biggest things you can do for yourself as an empty nester is understand that you are now in a new stage of life and accept that it will take an adjustment period. It’s okay to be sad that your kids are out of the house if they also become your friends. It’s also okay to be happy your kids are out of the house and be proud of who you raised.

If you’re not ready to head out just yet, this could be a great opportunity to rearrange rooms. Change things up so it feels less lonesome to sit in a room without them. Unless your kids are living close, chances are you want to keep a room for them to stay when they come home. This, however, doesn’t mean they have to stay in the same room they always had. The parents I spoke to didn’t wait long to change up some rooms.

Chances are you have some extra room. Don’t feel bad about wanting to downsize to a home that requires less maintenance. You might think of this as an opportunity to relocate

They often used the extra space for hobbies and interests. Hobbies and

interests are a big topic with empty nesting, because you now have to fill in the open time. Kids take up a lot of time, and it’s likely you’ve spent a lot of time with them. If you’ve had hobbies in the past that are still of interest, maybe it’s time to take a deeper dive and expand those skills. Use those spaces in your house to do those activities. There are lots of places to help do this, whether it’s an online class or something at a local studio or school.

possibly in the same stage as you and looking to spend some time being social. You could find a class with a group who meets a couple evenings per week. This will also lead to social time outside of recreation.

said, “We had lots of opportunities to go places when we had kids, but the kids were our priority so we didn’t take them. Now that the kids are out, we’re really excited to travel and take those opportunities.”

No matter your personality type, you need human connection. This comes from being social. You may have those social relationships with parents of your kids’ friends or perhaps friends you’ve held onto from before your kids came.

Another parent said, “We made it a point to try restaurants we wouldn’t take the kids to, and we would try a new one each week.” They started taking longer trips to utilize some of the hobbies they had as well. With all of these things, they still wanted to see their kids, so they took small trips to visit them.

Multiple parents mentioned that they make sure to have an exercise routine. It’s very easy to pull up a computer and find a virtual class or a program you can play on demand. But there is something to be said for physically being at the gym.

One parent said, “You can get so involved in kids. Don’t let those relationships fall apart. When kids leave you need them.” Sometimes it takes nothing more than a visit a couple times a year to keep those up. But try to be intentional about that so when the time comes, they are there.

First, you get the endorphins from the exercise which make you happy. An added extra is you find friends who are

The last piece is getting out of the house. Make it a point to take trips, no matter how nearby. One parent

If you’re a new empty nester, know that it’s okay to be sad. Try your best to look forward and embrace the newfound freedom. Find satisfaction that you did your part and raised your kids, now it’s time to enjoy the next stage of life, whatever that looks like for you.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

THE SORORITY HOUSE WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTO BY JAMI BOWMAN

I was never in a sorority. I wanted college to be a place where I could do whatever I wanted. I didn’t want curfews, bedtimes, and chores. I didn’t want designated dinner times or required chapter meetings. I wanted ice cream for breakfast and Taco Bell at 3 am. I would earn the freshman 15 on my own terms, not by a social institution, thank you. I had enough sisterhood with two clothes-stealing sisters

But why am I explaining my 20-year-old thoughts on Greek life? Because I’m living in a sorority house. Life has a way of getting Greek letters up on your home. Tampon, anyone? I recently moved out of my two-bedroom apartment of two years and into a small rental home. I wanted my teenage daughters to each have a bedroom and a place we can blast sorority classics like Prince’s “P*ssy Control” as loud as we can without anyone complaining below us. It’s a house of three women. We wear approximately the same size clothes. We have the same size feet. Cereal is always an option for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 3 am. You’re sure to find crusted bowls of microwaved mac and cheese under beds. You’ll also find hidden White Claw cans and the occasional frozen vodka in the freezer because someone failed chemistry. Everyone must help on chore day because the house mom won’t put up with filth or failing chemistry grades. We share makeup, facial products, shampoo, and loofahs. We have our own razors and toothbrushes, but I have a feeling there’s always that one roommate who steals someone else’s in a pinch.

growing up.

The kicker? We have one bathroom. A single room with a bathtub, shower, and toilet for three women with enough hair in the plumbing to make a fourth woman. Visitors? Forget it. You’re not getting in. You’re not in the sisterhood. There’s a tree and a bucket outside. The outside … my rental house came with plenty of driveway space plus a detached garage. The previous owner hooked up lights and its own heating unit for their workshop. My sorority sisters took one look at it and said we should name it the she-shed. No! The Sorority House. Inside the sorority house you’ll find: a leftover twin-sized bed with mattress turned into a couch. A small loveseat that is too big for the house. A table with red Solo cups and Ping Pong balls. A ladder ball set. A disco ball. And plenty of space to dance to ‘90s hip hop. What can I say? I raised my girls right when it comes to music choices. I was never in a sorority, but all of the sudden I’m living with a bunch of females on scheduled nights of the week. It smells like Bath and Body Works and Yankee candles. Only in this sorority house, I’m the house mom. And I still say Taco Bell is okay for dinner.

A Not-So-Ordinary Book Discussion

BY TIFFANY KILLOREN

TO QUOTE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN … “Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.” Writing is hard. Stories bring readers comfort and joy, but behind the scenes it is a lengthy process of writing, design, contract negotiations, and marketing efforts. To be an author, you have to be passionate about what you do to overcome the bad writing days and rejections that are inevitable in this industry. Authors have to wear many hats these days, so I again dedicate a column to recognizing the below local authors in the hopes you will keep their books in mind when deciding on your next read or gift for a book lover. As a fellow author, I tip my hat to them.

Stephanie Hansen: Award-winning author and literary agent, Hansen has established a name for herself on both sides of the publishing table. Founder of the Metamorphosis Literary Agency, Hansen represents an impressive author list while establishing herself with YA readers through her sci-fi thriller Transformed Nexus duology (Replaced Parts and the recently-released Omitted Pieces), and trilogy (Altered Helix, Stranded Coil and Paralleled Bond), which looks at haunted houses in a whole new way as its protagonist learns lessons about love, acceptance, and working together for the greater good. authorstephaniehansen.com Shannon Thompson: Author and local librarian, Thompson surrounds herself with the written word. With two series now available—the Timely Death series (paranormal romance) and the Tomo trilogy (sci-fi dystopian)—Thompson is passionate about connecting with YA readers. Currently working on a middle grade novel-in-verse about a young girl who loses her mom to the opioid epidemic, Thompson wants to use her writing to not only entertain, but also educate young readers about important topics so they know they’re not alone. shannonathompson.com

Alastair Heim: Visit Heim’s website and you can tell by his self-description (“Laughter is my favorite sound, purple is my favorite color, and other-people-cooking-for-me is my favorite food”) that he’s a pretty great fit for writing children’s books. With titles like Quiet Down Loud Town, No Tooting at Tea and The Great Puppy Invasion, among others, Heim’s stories bring joy to little readers everywhere and have made him a popular guest at schools and library events. I mean, who doesn’t want to read about puppies and a toot-rule-breaking tea party? alastairheim.com Kellista Rae Keaton: Who doesn’t have fond memories of watching Dawson’s Creek? Well, Keaton’s memories are a bit more vivid because she actually used to work on the set of the popular show, but now focuses her creativity on writing books. Her 2020 novel, The Window, is about a woman stuck in an abusive marriage who begins having dreams that inspire her to reach for something better. Keaton is currently working on short stories about the beautiful ways that autistic children see the world. touchpointpress.com/authors/ kellista-rae-keaton/

INFOCUS

A LOCAL GEM

FOR YOUR CLOSET & KITCHEN WRITTEN BY JUDY GOPPERT / PHOTOS BY JAMI BOWMAN

Mission Fresh Fashion has been feeding the need for fresh healthy produce and fresh fashion finds for 25 years. Feeling good is a result of what we put in our bodies—and on our bodies. With that in mind, Ray Hanf endeavored to provide apples and dresses— literally! And this unique concept has fed fashionistas for years. His idea to have a store dedicated to health and comfort was conceived in the early ‘90s. “He would include healthy food and comfortable clothing and accessories,” says his wife, Becky Hanf. “The idea came to ‘fruition’ in May 1998. In the early years, Mission Fresh Produce would sell fresh produce and offer customers the largest selection of Fresh Produce sportswear in the Midwest.” Around 12 years ago, the two began focusing more on bringing comfortable clothing to the forefront, in addition to offering the best of the best in accessories to customers. This led to changing the name to Mission Fresh Fashion, which reflected the offerings of the store. Now in their 25th year, they are not only offering local jewelry designers, great gifts, and affordable casual sportswear. “We feel something that sets us apart is that we carry clothing for all four seasons, all year round,” says Ray. “If you need shorts in December or a sweatshirt in July, we have you covered!” This popular, locally owned boutique is now located in the heart of charming downtown Mission, Kansas. It features unique, comfortable, beautiful clothes for women ranging from casual beachwear to dressier tops, pants, capris, and jackets. You can find every-

thing for that perfect outfit at Mission Fresh Fashion, including original jewelry, handbags, and sunhats.

Whatever you choose, it will become a bright spot in your closet or jewelry box. Current lines featured include Sea Breeze of California, Sabaku Artwear, Shana Apparel, Ezze Wear, Ethyl Clothing, Euro, Rum Reggae Clothing, Lulu-B Clothing, Life Is Good, Impulse California jeggings, Dona Bela Shreds, Pocket Plus, Firefly Jewelry, Mariana Jewelry, Ampere Creations purses, Charles River Apparel jackets, Catherine Lillywhite’s, Foxcroft Collection, ili New York small leather bags, locally crafted jewelry, and more. After occupying a few different locations, Becky and Ray purchased the building at 6102 Johnson Drive in Mission. “Our customers have been very loyal from the onset. They have followed us throughout the years,” confirms Becky. “Customers travel from Weston, Paola, Wichita, and St. Louis, to name a few. And all visit when they are in the area. They know they are going to see one of us, but likely both of us.” Becky and Ray enjoy greeting their customers by name when they come in. Over the years customers have come to know the Hanf family, and Becky and Ray have come to know

their customers’ families. One customer who comes in often, Ann from Shawnee, says, “I have been shopping at Mission Fresh Fashion for many years. In fact, my closet looks like a second store! I can always depend on Becky to tell me what looks good and what looks NOT so good! I love shopping Mission Fresh Fashion and love the owners!” “From selling real ‘fresh produce’ to expanding into other clothing lines and accessories, the store is always a work in progress,” notes Ray. A few years back they decided to stick their toe into the jewelry arena. “Since that time, we have learned a great deal and now offer the largest in-store selection of the very sought-after Mariana jewelry line in the area,” exudes Becky. Karen from Merriam, another Mission Fresh Fashion fan, says, “This wonderful little boutique, Mission Fresh Fashion, is my favorite ‘go to’ shop! Their selection of clothes, jewelry, and gifts is amazing. Because of the fashionknowledgeable owners, Ray and Becky, every piece is unique, comfortable, and of great quality. This is the kind of shop you love to discover on your trips and travels when you’re looking for that perfect little something—and we are lucky enough to have it right here in Mission, Kansas. Mission Fresh Fashion is a local gem!” Step into this unique locale this summer to discover for yourself what feel-good clothing can do for your mood! Whatever you choose, it will become a bright spot in your closet or jewelry box.

LET THERE BE PIE! WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY MELANIE MCDOWELL

If you’ve been following my column over the past few years, you may have noticed a pattern: my obsession with blackberries in the summertime. I’ve written about their wholesome nutritious qualities. I’ve also mentioned my memories of picking them on hot summer days as a child in sweltering heat amongst the thorny bushes, scraping arms and legs, with bees swirling about. What I haven’t mentioned is that blackberry pie—or most especially blackberry/raspberry pie—is my absolute favorite! This recipe for bumbleberry pie filling is swoon-worthy. Just ask my children, who can also mention their favorites from our summer of pie. Why the name “ bumbleberry?” Probably because of the bees that go hand-in-hand with blackberry picking.

Bumbleberry Pie SERVES 8

Ingredients

Preparation

Recipe for two-crust pie; see recommendation above

Roll out one half of pie dough large enough to line a regular (not deep dish) 9-inch pie plate. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.

3 cups blackberries (rinsed in a colander and laid out to dry on paper towels) 3 cups raspberries 1/2 lemon, juiced 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 2 tablespoons cold butter Coarse sugar for garnish

Combine berries with lemon juice. Mix sugar with flour, cornstarch, and spices. Sprinkle over berries and toss gently. Remove dough-lined plate from refrigerator, uncover and gently spoon berries into pie shell. Be sure to mound them slightly in the center. Evenly dot the berries with the cold butter, cut into 4-5 pieces. Set aside. Roll out a second portion of dough to an 11-inch circle. Place crust over filling. Trim dough edges so they don’t extend more than 3/4-inch beyond the edge of the pie dish, roll under to seal and crimp edges all the way around for a decorative finish. Using the tines of a fork, prick the crust in a decorative pattern to allow steam to escape during baking. Brush top of the crust lightly with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake in a 400-degree oven for 30 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake another 15-20 minutes or until juices bubble through steam vents and the crust is golden brown. Let the pie cool before cutting. Serve with vanilla ice cream!

KACIE WORKIN’ WITH DARLIN’

I’ll just lay it out there, my boss called me “darlin’.” I don’t think this is something to run to HR about because I don’t think it was meant in a sexual way. He’s never hit on me (or others) that I know of. He’s very respectable in the office setting. But “darlin’?” No. Terms of endearment is fine for friends or family, but not in the office. It makes me feel like I’m inferior. What should I do?

Sweetheart. Darlin’. Love. Sugar. Hun. I get it. The names aren’t particularly offensive on their own, but in the workplace they are. You are the boss of your body. You are also the boss of how you’re treated by men—and women—in the office. These terms of endearment are typically used in loving relationships, but when used by a male in a professional environment they become patronizing, undermining, and rude. In my experience, terms of endearment are used by older men in positions of power when speaking to a younger, female coworker. And most of the time, I’m sure when questioned the man would say it’s a compliment with no malice behind it. But you’re right. These terms make us inferior. They reduce women and silence us. They throw us into the role of the “nice girl,” or the “quiet girl.” So yeah—those terms are pretty loaded. I assume you didn’t do anything with the first offense. But if he does it again, tell him you’d prefer not to be called a term of endearment and be direct about it. Email works too. If it continues, that is when you file a complaint to HR. In most cases, he just needs to be taught “darlin’” is not okay.
