WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

EATING THAT ‘DREAM’ MEAL if you missed it, let me take this opportunity to encourage you to put on your coat, hat, gloves, mittens, snow boots — whatever it takes — and get out of the house Jan. 15–24 to try some of Kansas City’s finest restaurants at greatly reduced prices.

DUROC PORK CHOP with pork belly ragu, rice späetzle and baby bok choy. FAROE ISLANDS SALMON, pan-seared with Spanish red peppers, edamame and lemon-thyme vinaigrette. TRIPLE CHOCOLATE TOWER CAKE: moist dark chocolate layered with rich ganache. Is your mouth watering yet? In the frigid tundra known as January in Kansas City, there’s not much that can brighten my mood. But these menu items, and many others gracing the prix-fixe menus of KC Restaurant Week, are perhaps the only thing I look forward to in January. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll remember I wrote about Restaurant Week last January. I promise not to repeat myself this time, but

8

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

This year, I actually want to tell you a story about one of KC’s finest chefs who happens to be participating in Restaurant Week. It’s a duo of chefs actually, and they own a duo of restaurants here in Kansas City. If you’ve never visited Rye or Bluestem, then you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting husband and wife co-owners Colby and Megan Garrelts. I’ve only met both of them briefly at their restaurant in Mission Farms. They would never remember me, which is why this story is so compelling. In December, my family had plans to serve a holiday meal at the City Union Mission Family Shelter. Typically, when we serve we just help the shelter’s cook prepare the meal he has already planned. But because our date was the weekend right before Christmas, we wanted the meal to be special. We asked the shelter management what would be the guests’ “dream” meal and they replied fried chicken. Really good fried chicken, actually.

Well, nobody does fried chicken better than the Garrelts and their staff at Rye. I contacted Megan and asked her if she would consider donating fried chicken for 75 people. That’s right: 75 hungry people. I never expected to hear from her again. She got back to me the next day and said, “Of course!” We were not a big charity. We did not have anything to offer them — publicity, tax write-offs — nothing. They expected nothing in return. But they did whip up 150 pieces of the best fried chicken we’ve ever tasted and it was enjoyed with so much finger-lickin’ love I could have cried. These are good people. And there are so many more just like them in the kitchens around this city. Go out and visit them this month. Enjoy their food. And tell them how appreciated they are. (And stay warm!)

WAKE UP TO THE BEST

Coffee in KC BY JULIE BURTON

The art of coffee is booming in Kansas City — and we’re not talking about that green mermaid on your cup. Whether you’re looking for a place to have conversation or just stopping in on your way to work, the baristas at Kansas City’s coffee shops are experts at filling your cup with the flavors of the world — and maybe even a few hearts in the froth.

ROASTERIE AIR ROASTED COFFEE

KANSAS CITY, LEAWOOD, AND BROOKSIDE Imagine a plane effortlessly lifting off along I-35. You probably just pictured the Roasterie. The plane atop the Roasterie’s Westside location, affectionately named “Betty,” represents the style the beans are roasted in. “Air-roasted is when the beans roast from the inside out by gently rubbing together,” says owner Danny O’Neill. “The product is a cleaner, smoother flavor.”

Parisi Artisan Coffee / Photo Parisi Artisan Coffee

The Roasterie’s airplane also represents the search for worldclass beans. “I have traveled to so many countries I lost count,” O’Neill says. “More than 50, for sure. I only bring back the best beans. The very best in the world.” O’Niell’s mission is to serve others by creating extraordinary coffee experiences. “Only in Kansas City will you find the best loyalty to local businesses,” he says. “From sun up to sun down we serve Kansas City. It’s home.”

QUAY COFFEE

RIVER MARKET Even before the downtown Kansas City Streetcar began cruising by, Quay (pronounced “key”) Coffee had a steady flow of customers. But that doesn’t mean you’ll be overlooked. “We know our customers,” says owner Cory Stipp. “We build relationships and put time into each made-to-order cup.” Quay Coffee doesn’t roast its own beans but it does serve

Kansas City’s Oddly Correct coffee, along with other guest roasts. The result is perfection from some of the best baristas in the city. The pour-over style allows them to control the coffee down to a precise weight, grind, and water temperature. Even if you are not a blackcoffee drinker, you will be after a visit, as this drink doesn’t really need cream or sugar.

BROADWAY ROASTING CO.

support small businesses,” Honan says. “Bigger markets, like New York, don’t have a local feel.” The people in Kansas City aren’t the only ones sticking around — each barista has 10+ years of experience working at Broadway. And that’s not something the Starbucks that used to be across the street can say.

PARISI ARTISAN COFFEE UNION STATION, LEAWOOD It’s

WESTPORT Broadway Roasting Co. boasts a Kansas City first. “We shut down the first Starbucks in Kansas City across the street,” says co-owner Jon Cates. Sara Honan and Cates opened Broadway Cafe 23 years ago. In 1992, the business partners decided to start roasting beans, which became Broadway Roasting Co. The roasting facility allowed Honan and Cates to sell fresh coffee beans, essential to making coffee. “Coffee is meant to be enjoyed immediately after roasting for the best flavor,” Cates explains. The owners love the local feel. “Kansas Citians

not a secret that Parisi Artisan Coffee went into the Kansas City coffee market backward. Parisi has a decade of coffee-roasting experience. But this is only its fourth year serving coffee at the cafe in Union Station followed by another cafe in Leawood.

one batch at a time to make sure of that.” Parisi made the switch from retail to serving coffee nothing short of artisan.

SECOND BEST COFFEE

WALDO In a town like Kansas City, baristas speak highly of each other. When baristas want to be served, Second Best Coffee is their secret hideout. That speaks volumes considering Second Best’s doors opened less than two years ago. But don’t let the name fool you. Owners Leia and Nathan Anderson chose the name Second Best for the humor, but also with the idea that “the coffee today will be even better tomorrow.”

Parisi is a distributer of small-batch, roasted coffee. Even with the demand of two cafes, Parisi roasts every batch of coffee by hand. This allows the menu, which changes weekly, to offer four blends of coffee.

Second Best specializes in espresso. “If you are hesitant to try espresso, this is the one place to come,” Nathan says. “We love teaching as much as learning. It’s just the kind thing to do.”

“Obviously, we can’t grow coffee in Kansas City because of the weather, but our coffee is as close as it gets to tasting homegrown,” says Scott Presnell, director of marketing. “We produce

If you’re not an espresso buff, Second Best has a knack for finding your drink. “If you want the taste of winter in a cup, we can make that,” Leia says. “We love giving our baristas freedom to create.”

APP OF THE MONTH TURN YOUR PHONE INTO A PORTABLE SCANNER The gist: Instead of storing digital copies of your receipts and important documents

in your phone’s camera gallery, CamScanner turns your snaps into actual PDFs and saves them to the cloud. The app, available for Android, iPhone and Windows 8 phones, organizes your files and lets you easily access them on other devices. You also can annotate your scans with notes and highlighting and search for key phrases. Then share your scanned documents through email or social media.

The cons: The free version adds a watermark to your document. It also gives you lim-

ited cloud space (200 MB). Upgrading to the pro version (which provides automatic syncing to storage apps like Dropbox and Google Drive, lets you password-protect your documents and more) requires a monthly subscription of $5 or a yearly subscription of $50.

IN FOCUS FIGHTING PAIN THROUGH MYOFASCIAL RELEASE BY TINA KLUGMAN Photos / Jeff Ervard

Fighting pain doesn’t have to be a cold and clinical experience. It also can be a holistic, even spiritual, experience as I learned from my visit to the Midwest Myofascial Release Center (MMRC) in Overland Park, which can be described as part spa, part rehabilitation center.

Chad Huston of Simply Science Juices, Jan Kelly, and Laura Christine invite you to learn about myofascial release therapy.

Few people realize that their pain could be attributed to restrictions of the fascial system, a 3-D web-like sheath of connective tissue that surrounds, separates, and supports muscles, organs and bones. Normal and healthy fascia can stretch and move with no restrictions. When a person experiences trauma (physical or emotional), fascia can lose its pliability. That’s where myofascial release (MFR) comes in. MFR is a hands-on technique that goes beyond traditional massage — it aims to release these fascial restrictions, thereby allowing muscles to relax, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch ref lex in muscles. I met with Jan Kelly, owner of the MMRC. Kelly, an occupational therapist and licensed massage therapist, opened the center in 2001 to emphasize individual healing in a welcoming, relaxing environment. The first thing I noticed when I opened the door to the center was the soothing music. As I walked further down the hall, I smelled the calming scent of essential oils. When Kelly walked into the room and greeted me, I felt as if I had known her forever. She is one of those people you immediately feel a connection to, and she has a soothing nature that makes you feel calm and comfortable.

Treatment room at Midwest Myofascial Release Center.

16

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Kelly has been practicing MFR since 1998. She has trained extensively under

John Barnes, PT, founder of the Myofascial Release Approach. She describes MFR as a form of manual therapy that falls between rehabilitation and massage. It is relaxing, yet therapeutic. “Myofascial release is a form of manual therapy that does not use oils and lotions to facilitate kneading of the tissue as with traditional massage. Rather, the MFR technique involves sinking into the tissue, stretching, and then holding for a minimum of 90 seconds,” Kelly explains.

MFR is a form of manual therapy that falls between rehabilitation and massage. It is relaxing, yet therapeutic.

cess and leaving the body’s energy available for deep cleansing and rebuilding while not feeling hungry,” she explains. Drinking cold-pressed juices made from fresh organic fruits and vegetables while sweating in a sauna is the ultimate detox experience, plus it is also great for weight loss, pain management, and calming of the nervous system. By visiting MMRC, you are able to “experience the calmness of life.” Midwest Myofascial Release Center is located at 7270 W. 98th Terrace, Suite 220, in Overland Park. The center operates by appointment only. Call 913.706.2294 or visit midwestmyofascialrelease.com for more information or to set up an appointment.

Many clients visit MMRC to be treated for chronic pain and/or injury. The therapists at the center, which include occupational therapists, physical therapists, and massage therapists, treat patients for many different conditions, including arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, migraines, sports injuries, and more. The therapists connect with clients in an individualized manner, which is very important since each person’s experience with pain is different.

Yoga and treatment room.

Laura Christine, program manager for the “A Simple Detox” program at MMRC, has had personal success with MFR. She has chronic muscle tightness and pain, and when she first starting coming to Kelly, she had difficulty walking on hard surfaces such as a concrete f loor without experiencing excruciating pain. After about a year of MFR treatments, she turned a corner. “MFR was really pivotal in getting better,” she says. Most clients visit MMRC when conventional medical therapies and treatments haven’t provided the pain relief they’re hoping for, Christine notes. Clients typically start with a 60-minute MFR session, then add other services as needed. Clients also can do more intensive programs in one-, three-, or five-day sessions, during which they see more than one therapist and get multiple treatments. These intensive programs, or “healing retreats,” can be more beneficial to people than coming in for one specific session. The center also offers therapeutic yoga and massage, scar tissue release, NeurOptimal® neurofeedback (a brain fitness program that helps train the brain to focus), Sunlighten® infrared sauna sessions, and juice cleanses. All of these treatments compliment MFR and are meant to further assist the body in detoxing and releasing restrictions to help break the cycle of pain. “MFR has become more popular in recent years because people are realizing that whatever their condition is, loosening the muscles through MFR helps tremendously,” Christine shares. “A Simple Detox” consists of a juice cleanse and a visit to an infrared sauna, to help rid the body of toxins and nourish cells. “The juice detoxes the body by slowing down the digestive pro-

PETS

BY JULIE BURTON

Preying on Pets Kansas City is a great place to live. The cost of living is low. We’re friendly. In this part of the country, raising kids — and pets — KC is an ideal place to call home. But there are others that call this place home. The natural wildlife in the area can pose a threat to our small pets. Predators such as coyotes and birds of prey can cause devastation to a family by carrying off a beloved pet.

18

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Avoid the dusk and dawn hours. The natural dim light is prime

There are several things we can do to keep predators from making our four-legged family members a meal.

dinner time for most wildlife animals. Try to avoid letting pets out at those times.

“In general, all of the natural predators causing threats to small animals in the area avoid humans,” says Mike Hyde, Overland Park’s animal control officer.

No decorative or tall grass. Coyotes like to bed in tall grass. “Once a coyote establishes its home, it will do anything to protect it,” Hyde explains. “It will be hard to get rid of at that point.”

Even though coyotes and birds of prey avoid humans, the animals will adapt. Once they realize humans are not a threat, they may get close enough to visit backyards.

Make noise. If you know you live in an area where coyotes are present, hazing will help move them out. Hazing is the use of deterrents, such as an air horn, to scare off coyotes. Loud noises help maintain the fear coyotes naturally have against humans.

“The No. 1 predator in the area is the red-tailed hawk,” he says. “The hawks kill more pets than coyotes do. Keeping your pet on a leash offers the best protection from any natural predator.”

Stay with your pet. Keeping your

Larger dogs — those over 10 pounds — are not usually a concern. “The natural predators’ main food source is mice and rabbits. A coyote can’t tell the difference between your barking yorkie poo and a rabbit. It simply sees a small meal.” Hyde offers tips to deter unwelcome predators from feasting in your yard:

pet on a leash and staying nearby will deter birds of prey and coyotes. This is especially true in the cold winter months when food is scarce. If your pet does come in contact with a coyote in your presence, be loud. The coyote will

always run away from you but, hopefully, your pet may be dropped. And in the unfortunate instance that a pet succumbs to a coyote or bird of prey, call your local animal control department to write up a report of the attack. As far as setting up traps, there’s little most cities can do. It is possible for some cities to set up humane traps in January and February, but only in rare instances. “In Overland Park, there’s a trapping fee you must pay. Animal Control must determine if the traps would be feasible and the police chief must approve of the traps,” he says. “I’ve only set up two traps in the 16 years I’ve worked here. We can’t set traps that will kill the coyotes because we are in city limits where children and pets can get to them.” It is impossible to get rid of all natural predators. When it comes down to protecting our small pets, we must learn to adapt to wildlife as much as the wildlife has adapted to us.

much-needed transition for aging adults. Cooperative living and retirement villages come in a few different forms, and the Kansas City metro has many options to choose from. For instance, Tallgrass Creek Retirement Community, located in Overland Park, Kansas, promotes an active lifestyle. There, your loved ones have access to a pool, fitness center, creative arts studio, hobby shop, on-site medical center, on-site restaurants, a library, and more. Hobbyists looking to join a club have plenty of options to choose from: golf, book, art, woodshop, gardening, and nature clubs to name a few. The KC metro boasts many other retirement options, including Stonecrest Senior Living, Kingswood Retirement Living, Cedar Lake Village, and Primrose Retirement Community, all with varying options, amenities, and prices. Ultimately, how a person should live in his or her old age will vary greatly depending on the individual, but for many who do not need the care offered by nursing homes, cooperative living and retirement villages are becoming superior options to the standards of living at home or in a nursing home. Isolation and loneliness are undeniable problems for many in the world, but they do not have to be for your loved ones. Cooperative living and retirement vil-

DÉCOR AND FENG SHUI: WHY ARRANGEMENT MATTERS Did you know bright colors can keep you up at night? Or that it’s bad juju for your feet to point toward the door? Or that curves can help you feel more relaxed? And clutter can actually increase your stress level? All of this and more is outlined in feng shui, an ancient Chinese system of harmonizing your life. Specifically, by organizing furniture and clearing rooms. It’s said that, through feng shui, homes can be as peaceful and as functional as possible.

30

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

It’s somewhat of an art form. And many designers throughout the Kansas City area have mastered the practice of feng shui. Not just to help energy flow, but to make spaces look great and help you feel more comfortable. We reached out to a few specialists in the area and asked them to share their best tips on how to arrange and adjust your home in true feng shui fashion.

Ronda Reinke HAPPY HEALTHY HOMES “Classical feng shui uses a compass reading and the year the roof was put on a structure to calculate, and then determine the precise energy

affecting the occupants within. A classical feng shui practitioner can then help you place the five elements (fire, earth, metal, water, and wood) within and around the structure to create balance and harmony. Life simply flows more smoothly.” Reinke trained in China with a top feng shui expert and is a graduate from the American Feng Shui Institute.

Arlene Ladegaard DESIGN CONNECTION “There are two simple things you can do to bring feng shui into your house without moving every furniture piece you have. The first step you should take is cleaning up the clutter. Cluttered items represent stress and anxiety.

This may be the easiest or hardest, but it must be done. “Once you’ve made some room in your space, bring in some greenery. I personally prefer tastefully done fresh floral arrangements over plastic or silk greenery. Doing these two things will help your house to feel brighter, airier, and light.

Kelly Lankford KHL DESIGN STUDIO “The front door is like a mouth to your dwelling through which positive or negative ch’i can enter. The entry should be a good experience that welcomes you into the home. What you see and how you move into the house are important aspects of design to consider for every home. “Being the social center of the house, the kitchen needs to have a good flow based upon the layout of the cooking and entertaining zones. On trend are massive islands that can allow for prep work on one side of the island and food, along with your guests on the other ‘party’ side.”

The Daily Diet The start of a new year

VEGAN

sparks a lot of ambition

Being vegan is not just a diet — it is a lifestyle. People choose to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons, and to promote a more humane and caring world. Vegans do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. They also do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.

and drive to attain health and wellness goals. Exercise is important, but your diet plays the largest role in weight loss and maintaining your weight. Many people look to diet trends for inspiration, and a way to reach their goals. But are these diets safe and affective? Here are some of the most trendy diets, how they work, and how they will affect your body.

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Well-planned plant-based diets are rich in protein, iron, calcium, and other essential vitamins and minerals. The plant-based sources of these nutrients tend to be low in saturated fat, high in fiber and packed with antioxidants, helping mitigate health issues such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. And increasing numbers of individuals have resolved pain from arthritis, migraines, and cardiac problems when they avoid dairy, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The downside to being vegan, however, is a possible vitamin deficiency. Individuals who stop eating meat and dairy products are at risk of not getting enough calcium, vitamin D, protein, vitamin B12, zinc, and iron in their diets — all nutrients that come mostly from foods derived from animals.

PALEO Also known as the “caveman diet,” the paleo diet includes the same foods our huntergather ancestors supposedly ate: fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, and nuts. The concept is that humans evolved on a diet very different from today’s eating habits. Paleo proponents argue that — to be healthier, leaner, stronger, and fitter — we must re-think our diet and remove some of the food groups we consider basic. The paleo diet claims to optimize your health, minimize your risk of chronic disease, and help you lose weight.

Loren Cordan, PhD, professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University and author of The Paleo Diet, says the diet lessens your body’s glycemic load, increases vitamin and nutrient consumption, and contains an optimal balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. She advises you to go with grass-fed and organic varieties whenever possible to limit exposure to pesticides, antibiotics, and other chemicals. Research from Emory University suggests Paleolithic people obtained about 35 percent of their calories from fats, 35 percent from carbs, and 30 percent from protein. The downside is that this diet is strict, and hard for most to follow.

GLUTEN-FREE Many people have switched to a gluten-free diet, whether because of health reasons or as a simple way to avoid processed foods. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to

damage in the small intestine. It affects about 1 in 100 people worldwide. Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat. These proteins act as a glue to hold food together. Gluten is most commonly found in breads, baked goods, soups, pasta, cereals, sauces, and salad dressings. Eliminating gluten can help promote weight loss, but it has been linked to other health benefits as well. People with autism spectrum disorder may experience relieved symptoms by following a gluten-free and casein-free diet. Dr. Perlmutter, author of the Brain Grain has found that this diet can help lessen the effects of ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, and depression. The main risk of eating gluten free is the possibility for nutritional deficiencies. A 2005 report from the American Dietetic Association warns that gluten-free products tend to be low in a wide range of important nutrients, including B vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and fiber.

KETO The ketogenic (keto) diet uses the body’s own fat-burning system to help people lose significant weight. This diet has been used on cancer patients in conjunction with chemotherapy to shrink tumors and to reduce seizures among people suffering from epilepsy. Studies have also shown that the keto diet can help to minimize nerve damage caused by diabetes. The point of this diet is to put your body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis occurs when people eat a very low-carb diet and molecules called ketones build up in their bloodstream, according to the American Diabetes Association. Low carbohydrate levels cause blood sugar levels to drop, and the body begins breaking down fat — instead of carbs — to use as energy. Low-carb, high-protein, high-fat diets such as Atkins and South Beach are based on this technique. But this diet is even stricter than Paleo. The high-fat, low-carb diet is challenging to sustain over many years.

GROCERIES DIRECT TO YOUR DOORSTEP: IS IT WORTH IT? BY BRIDGET MASON HESS

new products, or even running into a friend in the cereal aisle just yet, so I’ll still be out there shopping!

The HyVee service has been in existence for a long time through a third-party delivery service. But it exploded in popularity when the Iowa-based grocer began marketing it last summer.

There are both pros and cons of grocery delivery, in my opinion:

“It was originally used by [a small group of ] disabled and elderly customers but has really picked up through word of mouth and Facebook,” says Donald Bush, manager of the Aisles Online department at one of the Overland Park stores. Bush mentions that the largest increase in customers has been among moms with young children. With the growth of the program, Bush now has a staff of 15 people and two delivery vans dedicated to online shopping fulfillment at his location.

I’m convinced I could get by without ever leaving the house. You can buy absolutely anything online and have it delivered to your front porch! It used to be that online shopping was mostly for clothes, shoes, or toys. But shopping on the Internet for even personal items and food isn’t just for shutins anymore. This is either very convenient or lazy and impersonal, depending on how you look at it. Two popular grocery delivery services offered in KC are Door-to-Door Organics and HyVee’s Aisles Online. If you love eating fresh, organic produce, you’ll probably be a fan of Door-to-Door, a Coloradobased company with an office in Kansas City. Door-to-Door focuses on partnering with farmers to bring locally grown food into customers’ homes. You start by choosing a produce box, and you can add other

34

HyVee charges $4.95 for delivery of orders less than $100. If you spend more than $100, delivery is complimentary. Most users tip their delivery person for good service. As a grocery delivery newbie, I decided to give it a try. I ordered my groceries late one evening — it took me about 20 minutes to set up an online profile and choose my items. A store employee called me the next morning to ask if I was OK with a brand substitution. I was able to add on one item I had forgotten. The groceries arrived at my house early in the afternoon cold and packed into insulated plastic totes. The delivery person was courteous and helpful. I will absolutely do it again — especially if I have a sick kid or an especially hectic week. But I’m not ready to give up the experience of picking out my own produce, comparing labels, browsing and sampling

PRO: It’s a major time saver. Anyone else hate how long errands can take? Online shopping took me less than half of the time I would usually spend going to the store, filling my cart, and driving home. CON: Self-professed hermit status isn’t always a good thing. Just because you could stay at home in your pajamas all the time, doesn’t mean it is a good idea. Plus, I find that I sometimes enjoy the experience of going to the store and seeing what new products are available. PRO: It’s hard to shop with small children, or when someone is sick. While my kids are older now, there were many days when I had a sick toddler and a husband working long hours and I wish I would have had the grocery delivery options available today. CON: Less control over what you are buying. I’m picky about my produce. Maybe it’s just my family, but we won’t eat the grapes if they are too soft and we don’t like our bananas when they are too ripe, so I prefer picking out my own produce. Also, a friend pointed out that she is concerned about how long milk and meat may sit out before it is refrigerated. PRO: Using a grocery delivery service is certainly not the most frugal way to shop for food. I could save by comparing prices and going to various stores, or price matching and couponing. However, I’d tout the convenience of having a cartful of groceries arrive at my doorstep as an “affordable luxury” worth using from time to time.

PARENTING

BY TINA KLUGMAN

WHY ARE MORE PEOPLE HAVING TWINS THESE DAYS? “Are they identical?” “Do twins run in your family?” “Are they natural?” These are just a few of the questions parents of multiples can expect to hear each time they venture out in public. Multiples, although more common now than 30 years ago, attract a lot of attention.

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

As a mother of twins, I can vouch for this. Mothers of multiples often feel a bit like celebrities when we run errands. However, along with the usual questions, I often hear a comment similar to this: “It seems like everyone has twins nowadays!” (Higher birth orders — triplets, quadruplets, etc. — still seem to be an anomaly.) While many people have noticed the increase in multiple births in recent years, they don’t always know the reasons why. According to a report released in 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the twin birth rate rose 76 percent from 1980 to 2009. In 2009, one in every 30 babies born was a twin, compared with one in every 53 babies in

1980. The rate of identical twins, which are spontaneous, has remained constant throughout history, while the rate of fraternal twins has increased. This could be due partly to genetics, as fraternal twins tend to run in families. The CDC estimates that about twothirds of twin births are caused by fertility treatments. According to Dr. Gehlbach, MD, a board certified reproductive endocrinologist at Olathe-based Midwest Reproductive Center, fertility medications (such as clomiphene citrate and letrozole) make up the majority of fertility treatments, although the type of fertility treatment depends on the number of infertility problems a couple may have. “If a woman only has an ovulation

DENTISTRY THAT WILL MAKE KIDS problem, she will be placed on a fertility drug,” he explains. “If a man has a sperm count that’s extremely low, then they would require treatment through IVF.” Many women are waiting longer to have their first child. Maternal age accounts for about one-third of the rise in twinning in recent decades. From 1980 to 2009, multiple birth rates increased 76 percent for women aged 30 to 34, nearly 100 percent for women aged 35 to 39, and more than 200 percent for women aged 40 and over, according to CDC data.

Board Certified Pediatric Dentists Compassionate team of experts to put each child at ease Several treatment options for apprehensive patients Fun incentives at every visit Excellent oral health education “This dental office goes above and beyond to make the experience comfortable and positive for patients and paretns. They are knowledgeable, proffesional, and efficeient.”

Dr. Celeste Brabec, MD and medical director at Reproductive Resource Center in Overland Park, says embryo quality is also highly affected by maternal age. “Both egg and embryo quality decrease markedly with age, which is a factor that decreases the multiple pregnancy rate,” she explains. Additional factors, such as geographical location and diet, may also play smaller roles in contributing to multiple pregnancies. The Yoruba people of Nigeria have the highest naturally occurring rate of twinning in the world of one in 22. This could be due to the fact that their diet consists of large amounts of a particular species of yam, which has a large amount of a substance similar to estrogen, a hormone that is thought to bring on multiple ovulations. A growth hormone present in dairy products, as well as the increase of growth hormones in food, may also increase one’s chances of having twins. These pregnancies often lead to health risks for mothers and babies, as they are less likely to be carried to full term than singles. Babies born prematurely often end up in the neonatal intensive care unit due to low birth weight, which can lead to greater healthcare costs. “There’s no question that any multiple pregnancy is going to be a higher risk pregnancy because the chances of an early delivery is increased, and that’s why we strive to try to help couples conceive single pregnancies,” Dr. Gehlbach says. The high rate of multiples in recent years may have hit its peak. A 2013 study on triplets and birth of higher-order multiples by the New England Journal of Medicine reported that the proportions of triplet or higher order births from medically assisted conceptions has dropped since its high in 1998, largely due to guidelines that discourage implanting three or more embryos at a time during IVF. In some IVF procedures, Dr. Brabec explains, doctors do chromosomal testing of embryos to see which embryos are truly competent, healthy, and viable, which can help maintain very high live birth rates with a single embryo transfer. “The benefits of IVF are very high pregnancy rates but typically low multiple birth rates,” she says. “In IVF there is more control because one can decide how many embryos to transfer. One healthy baby at a time is our goal.”

MIND & BODY

BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH

Kick the Winter Doldrums The “winter blues.” We all get them — and the couch, a blanket, and a cup of hot chocolate are comforting on these cold winter days. But what if you just can’t seem to shake that unhappy feeling? It might really be a SAD situation. SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, is a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the brain resulting from shortened winter days and little sunlight, and can be a serious, disabling illness that prevents people from functioning normally. In most cases, SAD symptoms appear during late fall or early winter and go away during the sunnier days of spring and summer. However, some people experience the opposite — with symptoms that begin in spring or summer, according to Mayo Clinic. Winter-onset SAD may cause you to experience depression, hopelessness, anxiety, lethargy, social withdrawal, appetite changes that include craving high-carb foods, loss of libido, and weight gain. If your symptoms are severe, doctor-prescribed medications of light therapy may be in order.

40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

But there are some actions you can take on your own that may help. Increasing your exposure to sunlight is one of the best ways to help prevent SAD symptoms. Sunlight releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. Try making your environment sunnier and brighter — open blinds, trim tree branches that block sunlight, replace light bulbs in your home to “full-spectrum” ones that mimic natural light, and sit closer to windows at home or in the office. Likewise, taking walks on sunny days or eating lunch outside can be beneficial. “Even on cold or cloudy days, outdoor light can help — especially if you spend some time outside within two hours of getting up in the morning,” reports Mayo Clinic. Exercise, too, will help your mind by releasing serotonin — the “feel-good” chemical that influences your mood. According to the National Institutes of Health, research has shown a correlation between exercise and serotonin levels. The exact link is not entirely clear yet, but working out definitely can prevent and

improve a number of health problems, including depression. (Also: high-blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis, among others.) Besides releasing serotonin, exercise reduces immune-system chemicals that can worsen depression; increases body temperature, which may have a calming effect; boosts your self-confidence; takes your mind off worries; and gives you the chance to meet or socialize with others, according to Mayo Clinic. Some herbal remedies, supplements, and mind-body techniques also can relieve depression symptoms, although these treatments alone may not be enough. Keep in mind these options may not be safe if you have other health conditions or take certain medications. It’s best to check with your doctor before trying any supplements. The Mayo Clinic suggests these for treating your depression: St. John’s wort, SAMe, melatonin and omega-3 fatty acids, which naturally can be found in fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring. Mind-body therapies include acupuncture, yoga, meditation, guided imagery, and massage therapy.

The many shades of blue Determining if symptoms of depression are the result of a bad day, the time of year, or something more complex can be difficult. It’s normal to have some days when you feel down, but if you feel bad for days at a time and can’t seem to get motivated to do activities you normally enjoy, you should see your doctor. Definitely contact your doctor if your sleep patterns or appetite have changed, says the Mayo Clinic, or you find yourself thinking about suicide or turning to alcohol for comfort. Your doctor may suggest light therapy, which mimics the sun with a special fluorescent light, for about an hour each day during the winter. But nearly half of people with SAD do not respond to light therapy alone, according to the NIH. Antidepressant medicines and talk therapy can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or combined with light therapy.

Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder Whether you’re experiencing mild winter blues or full-on depressions, these steps, suggested by Mayo Clinic, can help you to better manage SAD: • Stick to your treatment plan. Take meds as directed and attend your therapy sessions. • Find an activity that gets you outside during the day. • Take care of yourself. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly, rest up, and don’t turn to alcohol or illegal drugs for relief.

Exercise is good for your body. You don’t need a doctor to tell you that. With a little bit of cardio, weight lifting, and eating a variety of healthy foods every day, your body will run at its optimum level. Your brain is a muscle, too. It must be exercised to improve the f luidity of your mental, emotional, and physical health. It’s the same way with happiness. Happiness is not something we can hold tight and not let go. Happiness is a f low of changing experiences moment to moment. Happiness is a f luid and vibrant state of mind if we pay attention. When we choose to practice mindfulness, we develop the intention to pay attention to present moment experiences. We learn focused attention without falling prey to emotional distress. Mindfulness is a quiet, nonjudgmental awareness that gently cultivates inner satisfaction, self-acceptance, acceptance of others, and, most of all, emotion regulation. When we’re unhappy, there is the likelihood that we plunge into the abyss of mental health threats such as anxiety, depression, negative self-talk, low selfworth, alcohol/drug abuse, pornography addiction, eating disorders, chronic pain, shame, or poor relationships.

Olufemi Sharp has 22 years of education and experience as a licensed therapist and mindfulness teacher.

“Happiness is not a pursuit; it’s not a fugitive,” says Olufemi Sharp, a licensed mental health counselor and life coach. “Happiness is about savoring each moment and learning to be comfortable in your own skin. Happiness and mindfulness are synonymous. It’s a delicate balance of acceptance and

change. Happiness is play, work, mastery, purpose, creativity, inner calmness, gratitude, change, self acceptance, and acceptance of others.” There are two ways to practice mindfulness. The formal way is through meditation. Spend five to 10 minutes focusing on your breath. “When random thoughts intrude, gently notice them nonjudgmentally and poof — let them go,” she explains. The other way to practice mindfulness is simply by living moment-to-moment instead of on autopilot — whether you’re listening to your spouse speak, watching the joy on your child’s face, or taking your dog on a walk. Mindfulness practices prepare us to lean in; stay present, calm, and grateful; and to respond emotionally skillfully to the moving, colorful everchanging adventures and expressions of life. Mindfulness is an evidenced-based treatment with a plethora of research to support claims of happiness, emotional regulation, mental acumen, inner calmness, and physical wellbeing. It is the essence of true intimacy; it restores sexual energy, creativity, self-confidence, and vitality. Sharp is an expert at helping people overcome mood challenges, harness the power of happiness, develop shame resilience, and communicate more directly and effectively in all areas of life. She has 22 years of education and experience as a licensed therapist and mindfulness teacher and healer. Sharp has a passion for working with individuals, couples, and parents in emotional distress and providing them with healthy response skills that lead to happiness, wholehearted self-love, and healthy self-care behaviors.

“The most striking part of Olufemi is that she is extraordinarily attentive,” says Deborah Edwards, a retired speech therapist and a colleague of Sharp’s. “I was reluctant in going to a therapist for relationship issues because I am gay and feared judgment and was worried she would not understand. I am impressed with what she knows about LGBTQIA issues and how authentic her compassion is.”

Olufemi Sharp helps individuals learn to cultivate inner calmness, focused attention, and fulfilling connections with others. Sharp’s office is located at 7611 State Line Road, Suite 135, in Kansas City, Missouri. She has immediate appointments available, including Saturdays, and works with most of the major health insurance benefits. Call 816.665.3003 or email olufemiscounseling7@gmail.com to schedule an appointment, or learn more about mindfulness at olufemis-counseling.com. (She’s also on Twitter: @ OlufemiSharp and Facebook: facebook.com/olufemicounseling.)

In short, Sharp helps individuals learn to cultivate inner calmness, focused attention, and fulfilling connections with others. She helps couples process through past hurt and deep pain and find new ways of being in love by communicating honestly, being present, vulnerable, and open to sensual creative intimacy. “I love what I do,” Sharp says. “It’s my calling to be a mental health therapist, mindfulness teacher and healer. I answer the call each day with passion and zeal! I was put on this earth to live compassion in action and to heal the emotional pain of others.” Mary Cyr, community alliance director at The Mattie Rhodes Center says anyone struggling with anxiety, abuse or despair should contact Sharp. “Olufemi has wisdom and compassion in helping people feel safe and comfortable when working with her,” Cyr explains. “She has a waiting list in her practice at times because of word of mouth due to the amazing work she does with individuals, adolescents, and couples.” Sharp provides combined couples counseling to a wide range of relationship demographics. She works with heterosexual couples in traditional relationships and with couples who are intentionally practicing nonmonogamy in serious commitment relationships. She is a strong advocate and counselor within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA) demographic.

Crock Pot Overnight Apple Pie Oatmeal January. Brrrr. No matter how you slice it, January is a rough month. The holidays are over. Vacation is over. Spring seems like a distant dream. Oh, and it' s freezing. The best thing you can do with January is burrow in and make the best of it. We call this hibernation in our family and the best way to do it is with a warm bowl of this apple pie oatmeal. Dump it in the crock pot right before bed and wake up to perfectly creamy oatmeal for the whole family? Yes, please! You have to use steel-cut oats for this to work. (You can buy them right next to the regular oatmeal.) I usually mix all the dry ingredients together after dinner and add the milk and water just before bed when I turn on the crock pot. I recommend making this the first time during the day, so you can really time it correctly with your crock pot. This works best if you have a “warm” setting on your crock (you can sleep longer) but you can cook it on “low” too. Happy hibernating! (See you in March.)

Crock Pot Overnight Apple Pie Oatmeal Serves 4–6

Ingredients

Directions

1-1/2 cups water 1-1/2 cups whole milk 1 cup steel-cut oats 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 apples, peeled and chopped 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Coat a 3- to 4-quart crock pot with nonstick cooking spray. Combine all ingredients in the crock pot, put on the lid, and cook on the “warm” setting for about 9 hours. (If you don’t have a warm setting, cook on “low” for 6 to 7 hours.) Stir, season* to taste, and eat! *I don’t add a ton of sugar to this because our baby eats it too. My kids and I add a little extra brown sugar to our bowls when we eat it. Just know it isn’t super sweet right out of the crock pot.

TREND WATCH: ATHLEISURE BY MELANIE KNOPKE

It’s January and the New Year’s resolutions are kicking in. More hours at the gym or yoga studio means more time spent in your favorite active wear. It seems like now, more than ever, our activewear is just as important as our day-to-day clothing. Hence the buzzword “athleisure” — a new term coined by the fashion industry to describe active wear that takes you from the studio to the street. Most of the time, we aren’t just going to the gym and heading straight home. We may have to run off to a meeting at school, to the grocery store, or to meet a friend for lunch. Athleisure lets you walk out of the fitness studio

looking cute and put together, even after you just got your sweat on. Athleisure is all about layering. Vests and lightweight jackets are must-have pieces to take you to and from the gym. Pair them with soft flowing tops in lightweight spandex or jersey fabrics that breathe and feel good to put on after a sweaty workout. Look for details like cutouts on the back or shoulders to show off a cute sports bra. Finally, ditch your sweaty leggings or capris for a track pant. These are a great alternative to baggy old sweatpants!

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

Winter Skincare

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

1

Moisturize this.

2

Preserve and protect.

3

Air dry.

4

Simmer down.

5

Check your diet.

6

Pucker up.

7

Limit exposure to wet, blustery weather.

Use a thick, bland emollient at least daily (more often if skin feels dry or itchy), says Holly McCoppin, MD board-certified dermatologist at College Park Family Care Center, part of HCA Midwest Health. Ointments are more moisturizing than creams, which are more moisturizing than lotions. Put it on within three minutes after showering. If you have underlying eczema or sensitive skin, avoid moisturizers with dyes or fragrance.

Even on overcast days, some UV rays can penetrate clouds, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Also wear hats and clothing when exposed to the elements. Cracked hands are a common wintertime complaint — moisturize regularly and pull on the mittens — which offer better coverage than gloves.

The humidity drops during winter. In addition, heating systems blow hot dry air throughout our homes and offices. Place small humidifiers in bedrooms and common areas to help bring moisture back into the air.

Though it’s tempting to soak in a hot tub or jump into a hot shower to fend off winter’s chill, use lukewarm water instead. Hot water can break down the skin’s lipid barriers, which ultimately leads to a loss of precious moisture. And don’t rub yourself dry with a towel — gently pat water off.

Many of the best foods for healthy skin also promote good overall health. Eat a balanced diet, avoid excess sugar and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into your meals and opt for wholegrain breads and pasta. Antioxidant-rich foods — red bell peppers, salmon, blueberries, avocados, and sweet potatoes — may also protect skin.

Keep lips soft and moisturized with over-the-counter products such as Aquaphor (apply hourly if needed), plain Vaseline, or Burt’s Bees Lip Balm.

In extremely cold, windy weather, exposed skin can develop frostbite in a matter of minutes. Wear layers of loose, warm clothing, windproof and waterproof outerwear, hand protection, and a hat that fully covers your ears. Also choose undergarments and socks that wick moisture away from skin. Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible. (Know the signs of frostnip and frostbite, and call 9-1-1 if you experience the symptoms.)
