WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

GREAT ESCAPES … CLOSE TO HOME

My girlfriends and I have a strict policy on getaways: When one of us has a milestone birthday (typically one that ends in a “0”), we take a trip together. Birthday girl gets to choose the location. We try to plan months ahead and keep it to a long weekend, but those are really our only restrictions. I recently had a (gulp) big birthday, so found myself in the driver’s seat in terms of choosing our destination. I’d always thought when my turn came around I’d choose something exotic like Greece or Fiji. I’d even prepped the girls a few years early that I was thinking big — but then I went and had our third baby and suddenly jetting across the world didn’t really seem feasible.

6

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

And so we found ourselves in Seaside, Florida. A place I’d never been but had always wanted to see because the pictures looked too good to be true. We biked, walked, ate, drank, and sunbathed ourselves through one of the most enjoyable long weekends I’ve ever had. They let me sleep late, brought me coffee and pastries, and never complained when I wanted to read “just one more page” while lying on the beach. It. Was. Awesome. Wouldn’t it be great if we could do something like this closer to home, we said repeatedly. But, alas — there is no beach in Kansas, so we stuffed that thought away until the next milestone birthday. I think I may have found an interim solution. In this month’s Mind and Body section, writer Melanie Knopke found a local wellness retreat that might be right up our alley. My girlfriends and I have always talked about doing a retreat at Canyon Ranch, the world-famous property in Arizona, but a stay there is expensive.

Melanie found a local option called Power Your Journey that incorporates the same perks — beautiful setting, holistic focus on mind and body, spa treatments — but only requires a 20-minute drive. Now that’s a getaway that doesn’t require a milestone birthday to justify! And as long as we’re talking about girlfriends, check out our Around Town section about all the local wineries that have popped up. We just had a girls’ night at Stone Pillar Winery in Olathe and the setting, music, wine, and wood-fired pizza knocked my socks off. Who knew the beauty of Napa existed right down the street? Happy October!

AROUND TOWN

Stone Pillar Vineyard & Winery

A TOAST TO AUTUMN: EXPLORE WINE COUNTRY, RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD Looking for something fun and different this fall? Several local wineries offer special events each month, such as live music and girls’ night out craft classes. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on during October. Check the individual winery’s website for details on these and other events including dates and times, and whether pre-registration is required.

STONE PILLAR VINEYARD AND WINERY 11000 S. Woodland Road, Olathe / 913.839.2185 / stonepillarvineyard.com

Stone Pillar Vineyard and Winery, Johnson County’s original farm winery, is owned and operated by the Hoff family who has farmed the land since before the Civil War. The Hoffs, who are committed to embracing the community and enhancing local culture, rely on customer feedback and requests when creating their events. One of their most popular, according to Vintner and Event Coordinator George Hoff, is the weekend concert series, which features local bands and takes place at one of the few venues of its kind in Olathe. Stone Pillar’s food-pairing events — including a Thanksgiving-themed event coming up in November — are also popular, and Hoff ’s personal

favorite. He says this type of event “opens people up to new experiences” and gives the winery the opportunity to showcase how some foods and wines can be paired, perhaps in combinations that may not immediately occur to people. This month, stop by Stone Pillar for Hofftoberfest (Oct. 17 and 18), a fun-filled event for the whole family featuring a pumpkin patch, live authentic German music, rides for the kids, as well as food and other local vendors. Or plan a fun girls’ night out at the Hallowine Cork Craft Class (Oct. 22), where participants will do a little wine tasting, snacking, and take home two Halloweenthemed cork creations.

JOWLER CREEK VINEYARD AND WINERY 16905 Jowler Creek Road, Platte City / 816.858.5528 / jowlercreek.com

Located just 30 minutes north of downtown Kansas City, Jowler Creek Vineyard and Winery uses green technologies such as solar power to make their wine, sheep to control weeds, and chickens to reduce insects in its six-acre sustainable vineyard. In addition to weekly Sippin’, Smokin’ & Singin’ Saturday Nights, Jason Gerke, who owns the winery with wife Colleen, says there will also be live music in the wine garden this October for Wine’d Down Sunday Afternoons. Bring the family to Jowler Creek’s traditional Fall Festival (Oct. 10) for fun fall games, a bonfire, mulled wine, popcorn bar, and spooky storytelling. Lend a hand at the Norton Grape Harvest Party (Oct. 17) and finish with lunch and wine once the grapes have been picked. Make your very own pumpkin wine glass to take home at this month’s Women Who Wine Craft Night (Oct. 29). Want to help benefit the Community Food Network? Attend the Halloween Candy and Wine Pairing (Oct. 31 and Nov. 1) — a special treat for lovers of wine (and candy) this Halloween.

AMIGONI URBAN WINERY 1505 Genessee Suite 100, Kansas City / 913.890.3289 / winery.amigoni.com

Amigoni Urban Winery, located in the historic Daily Drover Telegram Newspaper building in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms, offers customized tours, tastings, and blending classes. It also provides a unique custom barrel-making service. “If a group of people or a corporation would like to have their own barrel, they are invited to participate in the year-long process and come out with 25 cases of private label wine,” says owner Kerry Amigoni.

WESTON WINE CO. 519 Main St., Weston / 816.386.2345 / westonwinecompany.com

Celebrate fall at Weston Wine Co.’s Applefest (Oct. 3 and 4) with apple dumplings and harvest goodies such as the winery’s signature caramel apple cupcake made with the its own Briolette Cut (Apple) wine. Grab some girlfriends for a night of wine tasting as you create a blingy pumpkin at this month’s Glitter Mafia Craft Night (Oct. 8). Missed last month’s Irish Fest at Crown Center? No problem! Head north for Irish Fest in Weston (Oct. 10 and 11), where you can enjoy live music and sample a special Irish cream cupcake. Other events include Wine and a Movie Night (Oct. 17), and a Halloween Costume Party (Oct. 30).

APP OF THE MONTH CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER FROM ACROSS THE ROOM The gist: If you’re one of the millions of Americans who have cut the cable cord in

the last few years — opting instead for Internet video streaming — this app may be just what you’re looking for: a way to navigate your computer from the comfort of your couch. Unified Remote turns your smartphone into a keyboard and mouse in addition to other functionalities: managing files, controlling Spotify playback, stopping tasks, turning off your computer. The app is cross-compatible. So, you can control your MacBook with your Android phone, for example, and vice versa. Simply download and install the app to both your computer and your phone, and you’re good to go.

The cons: The free version gives you very limited capabilities — mainly using

your phone as a mouse and keyboard. You’ll have to download the paid version, which costs $3.99, for access to more than 40 remotes, shortcuts for specific remote actions, and customizable widgets. But this version also gives you voice-command capability. The paid Android version of the app also seems to have more features than the iOS app.

able to be duplicated,” Oliver says. “We want you to be able to replicate the look at home.” The Steinnagels keep their network growing by attending national and global conferences with other beauty professionals. “Every generation brings something new to the table,” Wendy explains. “As a business, we must change how it’s run as the years go on. Great customer service and educating the client never grows old. “We have built this business through hard work, commitment and a true love of the industry,” she continues. “We have networked, made friends, and, most importantly, we put our name out there for philanthropic work. In a town like Kansas City, those things are important.” Los Angeles. Chicago. New York. Kansas City. Kansas City — a former cowtown turned hipster cool. And it should be with its trendy hotspots popping up all over town. But what makes a town “cool?” The people. In 25 years, the stylists at Oliver’s Hair Salon in Overland Park have not-so-quietly received attention from the national hair industry. The full-service salon offers topof-the-line service to its clients. Oliver’s Hair Salon is a member of the exclusive, worldwide organization called Intercoiffure hair salons. The group brings together the elite in hairdressing to exchange ideas and share best practices. It is this group that sets the hair standards and trends for the nation. Only 2 percent of the world’s salons are members. In North America, only 250 businesses hold the title of an Intercoiffure salon. Oliver’s Hair Salon is the only one in the Kansas City metropolitan area and in the state of Kansas. Intercoiffure is not built based solely on talent level. Salons are businesses. There’s a power duo behind the Oliver’s Hair Salon name. Oliver Steinnagel, co-owner, sits on the board of directors at Intercoiffure and the Professional Beauty Association. Wendy Steinnagel, co-owner, is also a member

of several professional organizations. When you’re one of the best of the best in the beauty industry, the nation will turn its head. The Steinnagels promote our creative city worldwide. Within the last decade, art and fashion has become a growing market in Kansas City. Renovations started in the garment district. Designers and boutiques revived the streets of a sleepy downtown. In a short time, Kansas City Fashion Week explodes with the hottest trends every year. And in the middle of all the behindthe-scenes editorial fashion shoots are the stylists from Oliver’s Hair Salon. So how do the Steinnagels attract some of the top stylists in the country? It goes back to the people — mentoring. One of the requirements at Oliver’s Hair Salon is continuing education. It’s mandatory for the stylists to participate in training sessions at least once a week. With the Steinnagels’ unique position in the beauty industry, they can bring in the top talent from Luxury Brand Partners, Schwarzkopf, Aveda, and the like to teach the current trends from these nationally acclaimed companies. That top mentoring trickles down to the client. The stylists learn the newest techniques in the business. “Our stylists are trained to teach their clients until it’s

Oliver and Wendy are two Kansas Citians who are named “hipster cool” in the beauty industry. The elite in hair is in our home town.

“Our stylists are trained to teach their clients until it’s able to be duplicated. We want you to be able to replicate the look at home.” — Oliver Steinnagel But, as we all know, Kansas City has always been cool thanks to its people. “October is cancer-awareness month. Oliver’s Hair Salon will be offering a variety of complimentary services to active cancer patients.” Oliver’s Hair Salon is located at 7590 W. 119th St. in the Rosana Square Shopping Center. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Makeup in

Minutes

BY MELANIE KNOPKE

Why is it so hard to get out the door in the morning? Maybe it’s because not only are you trying to get yourself ready, but you probably have a few little ones to get out the door to school. Or, if you are like me, you have a toddler pulling on your pant leg just begging for attention and trying to get into every single one of your beauty products. Then there are those of you who maybe just hit the snooze button one too many times. If you are a girl on the run, then you will appreciate these beauty tips and tricks to cut your prep time in half, and keep you looking good all day long. Before we put on our faces for the day, we need to consider what we put on our skin. How we prep and moisturize will not only benefit our skin, but it will also help keep the makeup in place throughout the day. And since time is of the essence, we really just need a one-stop shop. Look no further than 100% Natural Ultimate Jojoba Youth Potion

($39.95). This product harnesses the anti-aging powers of jojoba, which is not an oil, but rather a wax ester that is chemically comparable to those that form about 30 percent of a young person’s skin’s moisture barrier. Along with other natural and organic botanicals, jojoba helps improve skin texture,

24

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

boost radiance, and minimize the look of wrinkles and expression lines. Jojoba has been hailed as “the multivitamin for the skin.” Put this under your tinted moisturizer or beauty balm (BB) cream and you are good to go. A new product on the beauty scene is Tarte’s CC Clay Primer ($34). This multitasking skin-perfecting resource can be used before foundation as a color-correcting primer or alone as light coverage for an all-over flawless look. This primer blends easily to help brighten and even skin tone while blurring imperfections and neutralizing any redness

or discolorations. The antioxidant-rich formula delivers the perfect balance of color correction and coverage with a soft, matte finish. One product I will never leave home without wearing is undereye concealer. Thank goodness for Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes ($25) with SPF 15, which will cut your morning routine in half. This gamechanging formula combines the benefits of a BB cream with eye cream technology and coverage of a concealer. This cream fades the look of dark circles instantly, reduces the appearance of puffiness, vis-

ibly smoothes fine lines and wrinkles, and improves firmness. This do-it-all formula primes, protects, conceals, hydrates, and illuminates skin. Mascara can instantly transform your eyes, even without putting on eyeshadow. Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes ™ ($21) is probably

the best mascara I have ever tried. It is a four-in-one mascara that could be considered a push-up bra for your lashes. No need to use a curler with this product. It lengthens, curls, conditions, and adds volume. In fact, it is clinically and dermatologist-proven to increase the appearance of lash volume. A lip and cheek stain in one? Sign me up! Stila’s Passion Fruit Crush Lip & Cheek Stain ($24) creates a gorgeous bronze-and-

:

rose-gold shade for your lips and cheeks. This two-in-one stain will give you a personalized blush and pout with one click. It contains potent antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E to moisturize, and coconut extracts, which are known to slow the degeneration of collagen — thus

All Day® Liquid Lipstick ($24). I can speak from experience — this stuff works. It is a creamy matte formula that gives you a bold, long-lasting color that is weightless on your lips. It also is infused with Vitamin E and avocado oil to keep your lips feeling moisturized. The color-rich formula will not bleed or transfer like some other lipsticks on the market. Throw this on as you walk out the door and come home with the same gorgeous color you put on hours before.

supporting the skin’s natural structure and slowing premature aging. Also, coconut is celebrated for its high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Some of you busy ladies just don’t have time to mess with touching up your makeup throughout the day. If you want a pretty pout all day long, you will love the Stila Stay

All of these items and more can be found at beautybrands.com or at any Beauty Brands store.

AGING WELL

BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE

Doing the Math: The Pluses and Minuses of Active Adult Communities For seniors who’ve decided it’s time to downsize, there are a number of housing alternatives to choose from these days. One such option is the active adult community.

These communities are typically real estate developments, sometimes gated, that offer independent, relatively maintenance-free living to residents aged 55 and over. “Age-restricted” active adult communities, in which 80 percent of homeowners must be 55 and over, differ from “age-targeted” communities that simply market to the 55+ crowd. The age component is based upon the assumption that people in the same season of life are likely to share many of the same leisure-time interests. Since many of the residents continue to work at least part time, the term “retirement community” is not entirely accurate anymore. Active adult communities are most appropriate for older people who are healthy, independent, and interested in the social benefits of living among peers. There is usually a mix of housing types available — single-family homes, townhomes, or apartments — that may be connected by sidewalks or paths. Because the focus is on an active lifestyle, these communities are likely to have wellequipped clubhouses and other amenities such as tennis courts, golf courses, pools, and fitness centers. These types of communities typically do not offer health care services. Many neighborhoods host weekly gatherings, holiday events, daily social invitations, and fitness classes. Many also offer general amenities in a suburban setting and may be in close proximity to shopping centers, restaurants, and churches, while others are more focused on a particular lifestyle or location. In addition to knowing whether this type of community is right for you, you’ll also want to determine if a specific community is a good fit before you commit. See if the developers offer potential

FARMHOUSE & MID-CENTURY DECOR TOP FAVORITES IN KC A recent study came back with some not-sosurprising results for the Kansas City area: We love our farmhouse décor. From containers to furniture to the very pieces that are hanging on the wall, we are all about that farmhouse look. Although this might have been something we already knew, now we’ve got the stats to back us up.

30

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

The research comes from Dot & Bo, a furniture and decor business in California. Dot & Bo allows customers to actually view certain pieces and styles together before purchasing. This year, the company took its insights to the next level: tracking national trends. By following 100,000 customer orders, it was able to pinpoint who has been buying what, and which styles have become most popular

by region. For Kansas City, that means farmhouse: styles that include rustic or well-worn features, items that are decades-old (whether in actual date or look), and more. Essentially, if it looks as though it could have been used in a farmhouse — whether today or 100 years ago — or hosts even a tiny element of that country look, it’s likely a big part of KC’s favorite decor.

HOME & GARDEN

“It’s the heart of the U.S. These rural roots make for a look that’s inviting and timeless at the same time,” says Ashley Thompson, Dot & Bo’s public relations manager. She adds that KC shoppers are punctuating their look with natural colors and yellow accents. It’s simply one of KC’s “in” hues ... that is, until something else comes to knock it off its throne.” Local shops say they’re seeing much of the same. Coveted Home owner Jaclyn Joslin notes that while trends are always changing, the Midwest still holds its roots close to heart.

That means being slower to catch onto trends. The crazier trends, she says, are less likely to be followed in the middle of the country.

such as vases and planters. As for colors, she predicts deep emeralds making their way into the KC scene — especially when mixed with a charcoal gray and used for items like paint and sofas.

One of the biggest styles Joslin has seen come through, in addition to the farmhouse look, is that of midcentury modern: pieces from the 1950s and ’60s, including wooden furniture, retro colors such as teal and coral, as well as bright or busy fabrics. Statement lamps and rugs also have a stronghold in this style era. However, Joslin says this era is on its way out in other parts of the country, being replaced with a more ’70s and ’80s and art-deco vibe.

As for her own best-sellers, Joslin notes that people with a variety of tastes and budgets frequent her store, located at the Plaza. This allows her to stock a range of pieces, including an organic cotton dish towel — her No. 1 seller.

Photo / Dot & Bo

Photo / Dot & Bo

Dot & Bo’s topthree best-sellers in the Kansas City area include Mason jar light fixtures, a zinccoated rotating organizer, and a counter stool. Classic, yet elegant pieces. Where style meets functionality … and a bit of rustic charm.

“I’m not hoping [mid-century modern] goes away anytime soon,” she says. Some of Joslin’s favorite trends include brass accessories, white ceramics, and all types of handmade products,

“It’s a nice hand towel,” she shares, laughing about its ongoing popularity. “We just sell a ton of them.” Lastly, Joslin says one of the biggest shopping trends is thrifting. People are all about mixing and matching styles and prices to end up with a unique and incredibly eclectic look. “They like those really good steals,” she says. “[KC] style is becoming more modern and people love mixing looks.”

Golfers score points by hitting balls that use Topgolf’s microchip technology into target.

TOPGOLF: A FUN ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photos / Sean Berry

Golfers of all experiences and abilities are sure to love Topgolf — the newest golf entertainment venue in Overland Park, Kansas. Located at 10611 Nall Ave., Topgolf (topgolf.com/us/ overland-park) is the perfect place to practice your skills, hold a company event, meet up with friends, or just relax. It offers an enjoyable family-friendly golfing experience paired with an exciting culture for both customers and associates. Topgolf is unique in several ways, but chief ly because it combines golf with technology that computes the accuracy and

distance of your stroke as you aim for targets ranging from 20 to 215 yards. David Kim, director of operations for Topgolf, explains it as a combination of bowling, darts, and golf. You rent a bay much like you would rent a lane in bowling. These bays accommodate up to six players at a time, and are available by the hour or half-hour. The golf center is also unique because of the care it shows for its associates. A positive environment and a commitment to providing an enjoyable experience for guests always begin with the associates. The associates are the ones who truly perpetuate a company’s culture, and Kim is sold on this truth. “This company is all about caring,” he says. “For example, there was an issue in the Chicago branch where one of our associates got sick. They sent out one email, and within one day the associates rallied and collected over $17,000 for this girl who had become sick and needed medical attention.” Kim told of other experiences and stories like this where employees have gone out of their way to help each other, including a time he and an associate purchased a bicycle for a kitchen worker who walked in the rain several miles to work every day.

Mama Resch’s is a gluten-free and allergen-friendly bakery. We specialize in hand-crafted small batch breads and gourmet sweets and treats.

This care for one another creates an environment where Topgolf ’s associates strive to create good experiences for guests every day. This helps make Topgolf ’s experience a positive and memorable one for everyone who visits. No competitors in the U.S. have come close to rivaling its size and technology. But the one thing that truly makes it stand apart is its culture. Topgolf ’s venue is not only for those who are experienced golfers, though. The technology accommodates itself to beginners as well. “The beauty of this is that 50 percent of our customers have never picked up a golf club, but find it absolutely exciting,” Kim explains. People of all skill levels will have fun — even those who are not golfers. Topgolf has made itself into a venue that offers an experience for the whole family. Those who don’t golf have access to great food, an extensive bar, arcade games, a fun social environment, and more.

than that. Another upside to 401(k)s is that employees can invest a portion of their paycheck before taxes are taken out, so they reduce the amount of income tax they will have to pay. A 401(k) will typically offer an assortment of mutual funds to choose from and will be managed by a plan administrator hired by the employer. In 2015, individuals may contribute up to $18,000 in a 401(k) account annually, or $24,000 if over the age of 50.

1. With a traditional IRA, you can save pre-tax dollars but will still pay income taxes when you take distributions from the account down the road. 2. With a Roth IRA, you pay taxes upfront with the incentive of being able to take distributions later without paying taxes on them. This perk is especially advantageous for the many people who will be in a lower tax bracket at a younger age. The only catch is that the government only lets those who make under a certain

In 2015, the maximum annual contribution into either type of IRA is $5,500, or $6,500 for those over age 50. This contribution limit does not apply to funds being rolled over from another account.

The more you make a habit of saving for retirement well in advance, the better off you’ll be. Of course the ideal plan is to invest the maximum amount allowed in both a 401(k) and an IRA each year. You can try stashing cash under a mattress, but these two tools are worthwhile for anyone wanting to create a nest egg for their golden years. PARENTING

BY JULIE BURTON

SEEING THE BIG E Mom always said you shouldn’t sit too close to the TV. It’s bad for your eyes. But the truth is — kids just want to be close to the action. The only way to tell if your child’s eyes are healthy is to take her in for a complete eye exam. How do you know when your kid needs to visit an optometrist? Dr. Brenda Edwards of Heart of America Eye Care says, ideally, before grade school. “To be honest, most parents won’t bring their toddler in for a complete eye exam,” Dr. Edwards says. “But if I could tell parents one thing, it’s to get your child into an optometrist before kindergarten.”

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

And there is a good reason. Amblyopic eye conditions occur when one eye is significantly weaker than the other. These conditions can be corrected at a young age. But they are hard to detect if your child doesn’t have a complete eye exam. “By the time the child is 9 or 10, it may be too late,” she explains. Refractive amblyopia is a condition found in some children in which the vision of each eye is significantly different. One eye may see perfectly and the other eye could be extremely blurry. The brain will train itself to “see” with the good eye. The other eye doesn’t get used and it becomes weak. If the condition isn’t caught and corrected by approximately age 7, the eye will stop working. Another similar condition is amblyopia — also known as “lazy eye.” Lazy eye is when a child has one eye that turns in, out, up, or down. The good eye will fixate while the other eye drifts. “Lazy eye is similar to refractive amblyopia; the brain will not use the weak eye,” Dr. Edwards says. “Vision cannot be rebuilt once the child reaches 10, 11, or 12 years old.” Amblyopic conditions are rare in children but they can be fixed if caught early.

But, by far, the most common vision problems in children are “the big three” — near-sightedness, far-sightedness, or astigmatism. All of these can be corrected with glasses or contacts. Nearsightedness occurs when objects close to you are clear but objects far away are blurry. The most common sign of a nearsighted child is squinting. Other signs may include blinking excessively or rubbing the eyes. Nearsightedness is the most common reason kids get glasses. Farsightedness occurs when objects far away are clear but objects close to you are blurry. All babies are born farsighted. As the baby grows, the farsightedness decreases and vision clears. But sometimes a child will remain farsighted. Signs of farsightedness include re-reading lines. Your child might also say objects are “jumping” off the paper.

Spooktacular FUN $ 5 OFF any purchase of $25 or more

Astigmatism occurs when the curvature of the eye is shaped more like a football than a “normal” basketball-shape. Vision is blurred at all distances. Astigmatism usually occurs alongside nearsightedness or farsightedness. Signs of astigmatism are squinting or eye-strain. All three of these conditions are hereditary. “The higher the corrective power an adult has, the more likely your child will need glasses at a young age,” Dr. Edwards says. “Kids are socially uncomfortable when they can’t see clearly. Sometimes grades will fall. It’s always best to have an optometrist check out your child, especially if there is family history.”

Offer expires 10/31/15. One coupon per customer per visit. No reproductions accepted. May be combined with 1/2 price studio fee special only. No cash value.

Around the time kids enter middle school, they will go through the second highest rate of growth in their lifetime — puberty. “There are rapid changes in the body of the child and that includes the eyes as well,” she notes. “Parents need to be prepared for the questions regarding contacts, as this is the time most kids will ask their parents for them.” Optometrists vary on thought regarding how young a child can be to have contacts. Optometrists will all agree that safety is the highest concern when prescribing contacts to a child. Some kids are mature enough for contacts as young as 9 years old. “Actually, I’ve had a few 10-year-olds more compliant than some 16-year-olds when it comes to contacts,” Dr. Edwards says, laughing. One way to tell if your kid is ready for contacts is to look at his bathroom. If he can keep a bathroom clean, then he may be mature enough for contacts. He needs to know how to care for his body and have good hygiene. Contacts should be his responsibility, not yours. He must be able to put in and take the contacts with no assistance. The truth is, our eyes are always changing — from the day we are born to well into adulthood. “Our eyes will never remain constant,” Dr. Edwards says. “The sooner [an optometrist] can see a child, the better. Remember, some of these eye conditions can be corrected at a young age.” So the next time you see your child sitting a little too close to the TV, just remember she wants to be close to the action. But a trip to the eye doctor won’t hurt.

Retreat for Health

My husband and I always talk about getting away for a weekend for a sleep retreat. Trying to run our own businesses while also raising two little kids can leave us slightly sleep-deprived and exhausted. We often laugh about it, wondering if something like this did exist. Truly, wouldn’t it be nice to just get away to “recharge your battery,” so to speak? To spend time on simply bettering yourself and focusing on wellness from the inside out? 40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Thankfully, there really are places like this. Friends of ours have traveled to Tulum, Mexico, for yoga retreats and Canyon Ranch in Arizona for rejuvenating wellness weekends. They talk about feeling so much more relaxed, connected, and healthy. Who wouldn’t want to feel that way? But, these types of trips come with a high price tag. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to drop on a wellness retreat. Fortunately, we have a wonderful resource close to home! Power Your Journey retreats are located right here in Kansas City and come highly recommended from friends. Owner Karen Kipp, who is a certified reflexologist and holistic-care practitioner, has been serving clients for more than 18 years. Kipp lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 17 years old. Her loss brought forth a heartfelt commitment to seek a different wellness journey rooted in holistic, natural principles. “I studied everything I could that benefits a healthy, holistic life and refined my perspective on what it means to be a healthy person,” Kipp shares. Power Your Journey offers three-day juice-fasting retreats for women only. These retreats aim to empower you to achieve your holistic nutrition and health care goals. “Whether you want to have a fresh start, change habits, improve your energy, jumpstart your metabolism, lose unwanted pounds, or improve your overall health and appearance,” Kipp says. “The program consists of a

balance of education, modeling, guidance and both emotional and spiritual support.” The whole experience sounds pretty amazing, and a true getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The “Journey House” is a quaint, serene environment surrounded by hundreds of undeveloped acres in a quiet, rural setting. The 5,000-square-foot home has a library, yoga/ meditation room, screened-in porch for relaxing, a dining room, and a spacious modern kitchen. “During the retreat, attention is given to your mind, body and spirit,” Kipp explains. “For the mind, we learn about organic foods, the power of juicing, your relationship with food and early messages about eating. [We] explore your eating habits, meditate, hear your thoughts, get in touch with your mind, stimulate your mind by what you take in and what you let out. For the body we learn how it works, how we can help it or harm it.” During the weekend, guests also have the option to choose from various therapies from other practitioners, such as massage therapy,

HELLO, WORLD: A Q&A WITH PHOTOGRAPHER SAMANTHA LEVI BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH Photo / Jeff Ervard

42

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Photographer Samantha Levi’s work features a unique edginess and quirkiness. Photos / Samantha Levi

She’s SIMPLYkc Magazine’s very own fashion photographer — but this visual artist dabbles in many different projects, from photography to video production to writing. Samantha Levi has shot for Rieger Whiskey, Strange Music, Holiday Inn/IHG, Farmland Foods, and Stem TV, to name a few. Shooting professionally for eight years, Levi runs her business out of Liquid 9, a production company in the Crossroads. Levi credits her aunt for introducing her to photography when she was just 7 years old. “She taught me how to use a camera — an Olympus OM-1,” Levi shares. “I gained experience doing photography in 4-H for 12 years. My first darkroom photography class was in seventh grade, which is where my true love and appreciation for analog began. From there it just grew into this overwhelming passion.” Today, Levi specializes in fashion, music, and lifestyle photography. We sat down with her to get her take on her one true love: photography. Do you find inspiration from other photographers? I’m in constant need of visual stimulation. I love finding photographers who inspire me to push ideas and things I haven’t thought of, allowing me to make it my own. What are your favorite subjects to shoot? Musicians. They all have their own unique style and intrigue. I love taking musicians

off the stage and putting them in studio or at a location. I like showing them in their elements, too, because I love how it gives them a persona different from how the viewer usually sees them. What has been the most amazing experience you’ve had since becoming a photographer? Photographing at Paris Fashion Week last year with my two best friends. That was beyond a dream in a city I love so much. (Editor’s note: Levi wrote about her experience in the November 2014 issue of SIMPLYkc Magazine. Find her column here: goo.gl/ Z8Z59T.) If you could photograph anyone or anything, who or what would it be? Snoop Dogg. I’ll drop the mic on that one. What makes your work unique? Why do you think people like working with you? It’s all about what you bring to the table and how you work with others. Style is everything as well as being personable, easy-going, and fun. And being able to hold your own at the wrap party after the shoot doesn’t hurt, either! People must glamorize your job. What are some tricky parts to photography that people don’t expect? I call it the aftermath. I could shoot endlessly without stopping every day, all week.

But then you have to download, sort, mark selects of your favorite images, send them off to the client for further selects — narrowing it down from 800 images to eight. Then you have to retouch those images, and that could take anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours per image. That is what I’d say is the tricky part. The rest is my cakewalk of fun. What are some of your favorite Kansas City locations for shoots? Wherever the light is. You also write for our Good Tastes column sometimes. Are there lots of other projects you are involved with? The industry is changing for the photographer. It’s not just about taking photos anymore. Clients want it all. Thus, one has to evolve. I’ve always had my hand in many hobbies but in the last year, because I run my business out of Liquid 9, I have gotten more into video work and learning that side of the business. It’s an ongoing love-hate relationship. (My eye is trained in still images — not motion — so I have to retrain my brain in approaching the scene differently.) But I have mad respect for directors and editors more than ever now. Find more of Levi’s work at samanthalevi. com and follow her on Instagram: samstownusa.

GOOD TASTES

BY LINDSAY WEISS Photo / Lindsay Weiss

Sea Salt and Caramel:

A Match Made in Heaven One of the best flavors in the world is homemade caramel, lovingly made over the

stove with butter, sugar, and cream. Unfortunately “lovingly made” and “homemade caramel” don’t always belong in the same sentence together. Homemade caramel can be a little finicky. Stubborn. Sometimes, downright maddening. I know this because I’ve ruined a batch (or 20) of caramel in my day. So, I like to throw in a shortcut recipe every now and then — one that doesn’t require you to stand over the stove and sweat because you’re not sure if your caramel is done. (It does require you to open 50 caramels, though. But it’s a perfect job for kids if you have a few around.) These krispie treats have a thick layer of salted caramel poured right over the top and they are 100 percent to-die-for. Like, worth-every-calorie-splurge to-die-for. The salted caramel is fool-proof because you’re taking a little help from the store. And the flaky sea salt on top? Oh yes. Do not skip it.

Easy Salted Caramel Krispie Treats Yield: 24 treats

Salted Caramel

Directions

50 caramels, unwrapped 1 (14-oz) can sweetened condensed milk 1/4 cup unsalted butter

To make the caramel, stir the unwrapped candy, condensed milk, and butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat until melted and smooth. Remove from heat. To make the krispie treats, Line a 13x9-inch baking pan with nonstick foil, extending foil 2 inches beyond the edges to create handles for lifting later. In a 6-quart pot, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add marshmallows and stir with a rubber spatula until almost melted. Stir in vanilla, 1 teaspoon of the sea salt, and 1 cup of the caramel mixture. Continue to stir until the mixture is blended and smooth. Remove the mixture from the heat. Stir in the cereal until it’s evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture. Press the mixture into the pan in an even layer and cool completely. Spread the remaining 1 cup of the caramel mixture over the cooled cereal. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 teaspoons of the sea salt. Remove the treats from the pan and peel off the foil. Cut into 24 squares. (I found it easier to cut these if you refrigerate them for a while and use a very sharp knife, cleaning in between cuts.)

Rice Krispie Treats 1/4 cup unsalted butter 1 (10-oz) bag of miniature marshmallows 1-1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract 3 teaspoons of sea salt flakes (such as Maldon), divided 8 cups of rice cereal

Lindsay Weiss cooks from her home on the range in the outskirts of Kansas City. She’s won more than $100,000 in recipe contests, but still struggles to please her picky taste-testers Kate, Carter, and baby Cash. You can find her kid-tested, hubby-approved recipes at sugarmamacooks.com.

TRENDS

BY MELANIE KNOPKE

Am I Too Old For This? How many times have you tried on a piece of clothing and asked yourself, “Am too old for this?” We are all guilty of it! Especially when we hit our mid-30s and have kids. Our bodies simply change as we get older. However, you can still look chic and hip at 40+, it just takes a little more patience in trying on clothes, a discerning eye for trends, and understanding what looks great on your body type. Here are some things to avoid in your 30s, 40s, and 50+.

30s

• R hinestone anything is a trend of the past, especially when it comes to pockets on denim. It only accentuates a part of the body we women typically try to make appear smaller. • You are still young, but that does not mean every trend will work on your body type. Crop tops and culotte pants do not look good on everyone. Try them, but don’t force it.

40s

• I n your 40s, you should understand which trends are “too young.” My rule of thumb is if my babysitters are wearing it, I probably shouldn’t be. Even if you have a body of a 20-year-old, keep in mind your age and how you want to present yourself. This season, crop tops, rompers, and short shorts have been very popular. However, these are styles you might want to avoid. • B e aware of hemlines on skirts and dresses. We do reach an age when things can become “too short.”

46

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

50s

• When you hit your 50s, trendy is less important. Fit is everything. Find clothing that plays up your best assets and that fits impeccably. • You can be sexy without showing too much. There is something to be said about simple elegance and just showing a little bit of skin.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT

Mammograms 1

Picture this.

2

Screening saves lives.

Although strides have been made in detecting,

diagnosing,

and

treating breast cancer, statistics for 2015 from the American Cancer Society still tell a sobering story. About 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be

3 4

diagnosed in women and about 40,290 women will die from breast cancer. A high-quality

5

mammogram, plus a clinical breast exam, is the most effective way to detect breast can-

6

cer early, which greatly improves chances for successful treatment.

48

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

7

A mammogram is a two-view or multiview (3-D) X-ray of the breast. Mammograms prevent death from breast cancer by detecting it at an earlier stage when it is more treatable, says Dr. Nasim Ahmadiyeh, MD, PhD, and board-certified breast surgical oncologist at Sarah Cannon HCA Midwest Health. The dose of radiation is similar to a few chest X-rays, but the potential benefits seem to far outweigh the risks of radiation. For example, if 100,000 women have mammograms once a year from ages 40 to 74, there would be about 125 breast cancers and 16 deaths from breast cancer attributed to the radiation exposure. But there would be 16,947 breast cancers diagnosed and 968 deaths averted by this same screening protocol.

Mark your calendar. The most commonly practiced recommendation in the U.S. for averagerisk women is annual mammograms starting at age 40 for as long as a woman is in good health.

Be aware. Mammograms still miss up to 20 percent of cancers, particularly in women with denser breasts. That’s why you should never ignore a breast mass or change in your breasts, even if your mammogram is normal. This is also why you should have a clinical breast exam at least once a year in addition to mammographic screening.

Family matters. If you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or a history of multiple breast biopsies — even if benign — you may be at higher risk of developing breast cancer. See a breast specialist. High-risk women may need to start screening mammograms earlier and should screen with an annual breast MRI in addition to an annual mammogram and also have a clinical breast exam every six months.

Pay attention. Never ignore a breast mass if you are pregnant or nursing. Don’t assume it’s a normal pregnancy or nursing change. Breast cancer tends to be diagnosed at a later stage in women who are pregnant or nursing because of delays in diagnosis. You can still have a mammogram if you are pregnant or nursing.

It’s not just for women. Men also can get breast cancer and men do get mammograms if they detect a mass or change in their breast. Don’t delay seeking medical attention if you are a man with a mass in your breast, particularly if you have a family history of cancers of any kind.
