It’s a simple, inexpensive task that takes 15 minutes and can save your life.
May your February be filled with (healthy) hearts!
Just ask my dear friend Gina, who lost her husband Mark about 18 months ago. Mark was a 46-year-old in near-perfect health. A

biker, a golfer, and an active father of two, Mark came in from a bike ride and collapsed on the ground. He died instantly.
P.S. I can’t let February close without saying goodbye to our amazing photographer, Carmen Carver. She has worked tirelessly to make our photos, especially our fashion spreads, artistic and amazing. She’s shot at the crack of dawn, the crack of midnight, and everywhere in between. She has perched herself in the craziest positions to make every shot the perfect shot. And she’s made all her subjects feel beautiful, inside and out. That’s because she’s the same — so beautiful on the outside that she belongs on the other side of the camera, but so beautiful on the inside that you want to be her friend always and forever. She’s moving on to greener pastures in Arkansas and we will miss her more than words can convey. Photo / Jamie Miller

GET SCHOOLED ON KANSAS CITY’S HISTORY BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH
The Kansas City metro is a haven for history lovers. From the Oregon Trail to the Civil War battle sites to our Prohibition legacy, our history is sure to impress even the most disinterested of us.

For starters, get the lay of the land as it was centuries ago by visiting the starting points of the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails in present-day Independence. The Frontier Trails Museum is situated on the very spot where emigrants congregated and stocked up on supplies before heading westward. You can still see the trail swales — ruts left in the ground from wagon wheels — across the street from the museum. Because both Missouri and Kansas saw a tremendous amount of fighting during the American Civil War, you have plenty of sites to visit in the metro area. The self-guided Battle of Westport auto tour, will lead you to the 25 major sites of the Civil War battle that took place Oct. 21–23, 1864. The tour route covers 32 miles. It starts at the corner of Westport Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, where the largest battle west of the Mississippi took place. In the battle of Westport, 25,000 Federals held their ground against 12,000 Confederate soldiers for four hours, eventually forcing the troops to retreat across present-day Loose Park. The tour features battle markers and also takes you to the Forest Hill Cemetery, where many Confederates were buried. Civil War buffs also should check out the John Wornall House Museum, which was used by both sides as an emergency hospital. Today, you can take guided tours of the home. Finally, take a short trip to downtown Liberty, Mo., to visit the James Country Mercantile, which offers all kinds of historically accurate goods and clothing for 19th-century re-enactments. Just a couple blocks south of that store is Bratcher’s Cooperage, where you can watch Doug Bratcher craft barrels, buckets, kegs, and churns by hand. And down the street, you’ll find Corbin Mill, which was built in 1889 as a flour mill, but is today used as a retail center. Get an even more in-depth view of pioneer life by visiting 1855 Missouri Town in Lee’s Summit, Shoal Creek Living History Museum in Kansas City, and Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop & Farm in Olathe.

If you’re enamored with the legend of Jesse James, check out the Jesse James Bank Museum, also located in downtown Liberty. This is where the James’ gang carried out its first daylight bank robbery, and today, the museum is set up to look as it did in 1866.
A quick, 10-minute jaunt north takes you to James’ childhood home in Kearney, Mo. The Jesse James Farm and Museum boasts the largest collection of James family artifacts in the nation. In the yard of the family home is the famous criminal’s original burial site. Of course, 100-year-old Union Station has plenty of historical significance. (It celebrated its centennial last fall.) When the elaborate train station opened, it was bigger than any other west of New York. It was more than just a train terminal — it became the center of civic life, offering a bookstore, specialty grocer, drugstore, and several restaurants. But Union Station soon became famous for a much more insidious act — the Union Station Massacre, in which convicted mobster Frank Nash and four law-enforcement officers were shot and killed outside the station. (Learn more about Kansas City’s mob history on the Gangster Tour, thekctours.com.) This didn’t scare away travelers, though. It wasn’t until the mid-1980s that Union Station saw enough of a decline in passengers that it was forced to close. Fortunately, in 1999, the Union Station we love today was restored to its former glory, housing shops, restaurants, theaters, exhibits, an interactive science center, Amtrak service, and a gallery that hosts traveling exhibitions.
Another infamous neighborhood is the 18th & Vine District, which, in the early 1900s, encompassed a number of city blocks surrounding that intersection. African-American Kansas Citians began settling in this area in the late 1800s, and by the 1920s, it had become a thriving community. It also became known for its rocking nightlife and legendary jazz during the Prohibition era. In recent years, the area has been redeveloped as a historic district and is now home to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the American Jazz Museum, and the restored Gem Theater.

You can address a variety of oral surgical or personal needs, while rejuvenating yourself in the process. The long list of services offered there ranges from wisdom teeth removal and jaw reconstruction to tummy tucks and breast enlargement to a host of skincare services. The medspa, Mia Bella Donna (Italian for “My Beautiful Woman”), extends plastic surgery services while also creating an oasis for patients. The center’s gorgeous décor and relaxing services, which include facials, microdermabrasion, full-body waxing, airbrush tanning, and makeup application, work in tandem toward this goal. April Batenhorst, first assistant and office manager, says the spa helps expand skin regimens and treatments. For instance, patients who don’t want a full face-lift can pair Botox injections and hydro facials (among other options) to lengthen their treatment results.

The concept was such a hit that Dr. Camarata, a board-certified oral and plastic surgeon, has since opened a second oral surgery location in Kansas City. The desire to be close to family members drew them to Kansas City, Batenhorst says, but they have since built a close relationship with staff members and clients here. Years — and a number of patients later — both still travel back to Lincoln once a month to help trauma victims. Batenhorst says they enjoy the opportunity to help hand- and facial-trauma victims, but without sacrificing the needs of their Kansas City patients. Because they’re able to be f lexible with hours, she and Dr. Camarata miss only three days from the local offices per month. Batenhorst is most proud of the office’s customer service. “We’re all tight-knit; we treat each other like family and we treat our patients like family,” she shares.

IN FOCUS Couples shouldn’t wait much longer than a year to be evaluated. There is a real clock ticking. And if a woman is over the age of 35, she should schedule an evaluation after six months of unprotected intercourse. “We want people to remember a woman’s peak time to conceive is in her teens and early 20s,” he says. “Our bodies are just built this way.” Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have in their lifetimes. And like the rest of the human body, the eggs start to age. By the time a woman turns 40, she will only have a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant each month without fertility help. Age is the biggest determinant in getting pregnant. But it’s not always the woman — men account for half of all infertility problems. Most men will not know they have fertility issues until a semen analysis is performed. Like a woman’s eggs, sperm show a decrease in quality with age, even though that man will continue to make sperm the rest of his life.

MIDWEST REPRODUCTIVE CENTER IS IN THE BABY-MAKING BUSINESS BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Kelly Chamberlain
Dan Gehlbach, MD, makes babies for a living. No, he doesn’t make his own babies — he already had a couple of those years ago. The board-certified reproductive endocrinologist has made thousands of babies over the span of 10 years at his Olathe and North Kansas City offices. His job is to help infertile couples get

pregnant. You could probably call him a miracle worker. Infertility affects approximately 11 percent of the reproductive-age population, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. A couple is considered infertile after one year of having unprotected intercourse without getting pregnant.
Couples should have a conversation about when they would like to conceive even if they do not plan on having children immediately. It has been a trend for couples to delay children until later in life. Until they plan on conceiving, Dr. Gehlbach recommends taking care of any underlying medical issues such as endometriosis, cysts, or fibroids. He also recommends everyone take a multivitamin every day and follow a healthy lifestyle. “Technology is always improving. We can make things happen,” he explains. “As long as you know the chances of getting pregnant, we will give you the opportunity to have a baby. But the sooner we see a couple, the greater the chances of getting pregnant.” In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is still king of the reproduction world. IVF involves removing eggs from a

“ Technology is always improving. We can make things happen. … The sooner we see a couple, the greater the chances of getting pregnant.” — Dan Gehlbach, MD Couples cannot control their age but they can control when to get fertility help. The sooner you make a consultation with Midwest Reproductive Center, the sooner Dr. Gehlbach will show you your baby on the ultrasound for the first time. And showing the baby’s heartbeat is his favorite part of his job. He likes being able to give couples a new addition to their families. Midwest Reproductive Center is located in Doctors Building 1 at 201375 W. 151 St., Suite 403, in Olathe, and at Medical Plaza North, 2750 Clay Edwards Drive, Suite 604, in North Kansas City, Mo. IVF is also the jumping board for other treatments. It allows couples with recurrent miscarriages to find out if there is a chromosomal issue by testing the embryos before they are transferred. Midwest Reproductive Center also helps couples to use donor eggs or sperm if their own aren’t adequate.
Not every couple needs IVF. Some simply need a boost with fertility drugs to get pregnant. Dr. Gehlbach and his staff use the least invasive and most affordable option for every patient. (Midwest Reproductive Center also offers pricing packages,

The newest technology is the ability to freeze eggs in a process called vitrification. The old process would slowly cool the egg, which sometimes resulted in ice crystals, potentially damaging the egg. Vitrification allows Dr. Gehlbach to freeze and store frozen eggs with less chance of damage. Most couples do not freeze eggs, but it’s an option to women who know they will lose their reproductive organs due to disease or if they know they want kids much later in life.

HOME & GARDEN living in the present with your children as much as it is about how you approach the design of their bedrooms. You don’t want to be completely redesigning the space every time your child changes his mind about his favorite color, or a new Disney character makes him want all-new bedding. Interior designer Tess Hawes has four children of her own, ages 7 to 13, and with her experience, she has cultivated many creative, inexpensive ideas for creating rooms that grow up alongside children. “When your child has a duck theme, it’s hard to make that grow with him,” she says. Granted, kids’ rooms are uniquely special in a home, and you want to make it a space they’ll enjoy, but you can extend the life of a design with the right wall color choice, bedding, art, and furniture. “Paint is super cheap and it’s something you can redo over and over again,” Hawes says. She even recommends letting your child express her personality in whatever color she wants. “If it’s hot pink, paint the walls, but do the bedding in white because you know she’s not going to like pink on pink in five years,” Hawes explains. “Paint is not a big deal; it’s the bedding that gets expensive.”
HOW TO DESIGN CHILDREN’S ROOMS THAT MATURE AS THEY DO BY ANDREA DARR Photos coutesy of / TGH Interiors
Most anyone who has spent a small fortune creating the perfect nursery knows shortly thereafter how quickly that newborn grew out of her crib and then just as quickly grew out of her toddler bed. Though diaper duty seems as though it lasts a lifetime, it’s but a couple turns of the calendar. Out goes the changing table and Diaper Genie. Then your child learns how to put herself to sleep, and down to the basement goes your rocking chair. As the saying goes, “The days are long but the years are short,” which is a truism for
28
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
That said, it can still be a hassle to move out furniture, tape off doors and windows, and pull out the roller brushes. Instead of painting your nursery a typical “baby color,” perhaps orange, apple green, navy, or eggplant would have a longer run. When Hawes’ first daughter turned 7 years old, she wanted an aqua-colored, nature-themed room. When her second daughter turned 7, she requested a rainbow-colored room, which Tess created for her by painting a Marimekko-like scene of red poppies on the wall paired with a turquoise bed. Her third daughter will be getting a new room that the three of them will share in an enormous attic space in a new house. The unifying element will be a huge gallery wall of merged pictures that reflect each girl’s personality.
Changing out art in the same frames is a great way to inexpensively update a room. Hawes has proven this before when she designed a nursery for a client years ago in a tone-on-tone harlequin pattern and hung alphabet prints from books on the walls. As her client’s daughter aged, the prints changed to fairies. Now that the child is a middle-schooler, the prints will change again to suit her new interests. Additionally, Hawes likes to incorporate a chair into each child’s room for reading, playing, displaying pillows, and laying out clothes. Make that chair work from a nursery through college with a slipcover. “It’s not necessarily cheaper, but you don’t need to buy all-new furniture,” she shares. And when it comes to beds, Hawes has found the functionality of convertible cribs to be disappointing. “Cribs are not that expensive, and by the time the child
needs to convert the bed, no one likes it anymore,” she says. “If you’ve got the space, do twin beds that you can use for sleepovers or for a future sibling.” Hawes also recommends trundle beds for their space-saving quality. “You can always use an extra bed,” she adds. Good storage is also a necessity, Hawes stresses. “Baskets are really your friends. They cover up a multitude of sins, and are inexpensive and clean-looking,” she says. Try Ikea’s cube shelves turned on their sides. You can put trinkets in the canvas boxes and use the top for display. Her final advice: “It doesn’t have to be perfect.” Your kids and their preferences are going to change every day over 18 years. You can’t keep them little forever, but you can slow the pace of their room redesigns as they progress through each phase of their lives.

TEAELLA: THE COMFY CHIC BOUTIQUE BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE
So she moved to a new community that would not only provide the warehouse she needed but also the space that would enable her to open a storefront. Redman says she has always reinvested her earnings and never took out a loan for the storefront, explaining that her online business actually funded the storefront. Because she did not incur any additional overhead, she has been able to maintain online pricing even after the storefront opened.

Monica Redman, owner of TeaElla, the Comfy Chic Boutique, possesses that deadly combination of an artistic eye and a mind for business — and her customers couldn’t be happier. Redman, whose father was a photographer, grew up with an entrepreneurial attitude. She tried her hand at a few other careers before launching a clothing resale business selling used clothes on various online auction sites. Eventually, Redman progressed to buying and selling new clothes. Her growing inventory made it necessary for her to obtain warehouse space and, as a result, the TeaElla website was born. Over the years, however, Redman received many requests for a brick-and-mortar store that people who lived locally could visit.

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
The boutique specializes in what Redman refers to as “comfy chic” casual basics, such as tunics, yoga pants, leggings, and active wear. Everyday looks, such as sweatshirts, are available as well as styles found in trendier boutiques. Prices for most items fall in the $20 to $40 range, although the boutique’s offerings also have expanded to include some higher-priced special-occasion pieces. “TeaElla is your one-stop shop for finding all the cozy comfort you long for while looking chic at the same time,” Redman says. “We specialize in soft, cozy fabrics and styles that are not only on-trend and slimming, but that are first — and most importantly — comfortable.” Because she also understands that every woman is unique, Redman strives to carry as many styles as possible in sizes XS to 3X. And because customer service is her No. 1 priority, Redman focuses
on creating a welcome, homey environment in her store. “We provide our ‘niche’ customers with lots of on-on-one shopping to help them identify and ref lect their own style,” she explains. This is why, Redman believes, her customers continue to come back. Redman confesses that going to market every year to buy clothes is one of her favorite aspects of the business. Rather than looking for and only purchasing specific brands, Redman seeks out the best quality for the most reasonable price. She says she searches for pants and jeans that lift and “hold everything in” as well as clothes that are slimming and will look f lattering on all figure types — whether that be more form-fitting clothing or oversized, loose-fitting pieces typically worn with leggings. The biggest challenge with this business, Redman says, is getting everything that is in the storefront on to the website. “It’s almost like having two separate businesses,” she explains. “As we grow, I would love to find someone who specializes in managing the online and social media aspects of the business.” Redman invites you to shop the large selection of sale items available at TeaElla. In addition, mention the ad in SIMPLYkc Magazine and receive 20 percent off the highest priced item in your purchase. Find TeaElla in Olathe at 14122 W. 135th St., between Pf lumm and Blackbob. The store is tucked among the other businesses in this area, so for the exact location, refer to the map in the TeaElla ad. Visit TeaElla’s Facebook page for current hours, and be sure to check out the extensive catalog online at teaella.com. For any additional information, call 913.440.9203 or email info@teaella.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
BY JULIE BURTON
The CardioScan at St. Luke’s reveals how much coronary calcification is in your arteries.
Hidden Heart Disease Breaks Apart Area Family There was no warning. Mark Weddle walked into his house on July 27, 2013, but never walked out. Gina Weddle was sitting in her car, waiting for her husband to change his shoes. He had just returned from a bike ride with his twin brother, Paul. After a long wait, Gina went inside to check on Mark and found him unconscious on the floor without a pulse. Terror-stricken, she called 911 and started CPR immediately. Sadly, her husband passed away.
32
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
It was a heart attack at the age of just 46. The loss was devastating to family and friends. But his sudden death also serves as a warning — heart disease can strike anyone. Mark was the perfect picture of health. He was a golfer. He played recreational sports with his friends. He would go for 20-mile bike rides with his brother or friends. You often would find him and Gina taking a five-mile walk. No one would have guessed he had heart disease. But the classic markers did not apply to him. Mark was a nonsmoker and rarely drank alcohol. His blood pressure
was normal. There was no family history of heart disease. He did not have diabetes. He never complained about chest pain. Although he did have high cholesterol, Mark tried to control it with medication and diet. He did everything right. But the one thing that could have saved his life was one simple test — a CardioScan at St. Luke’s. Jay Jackson, MD, FACC, says one in four people have heart disease; nearly everyone is affected by it. “Half of all people learn of heart disease when they’re already dying of it — by sudden death or a heart attack,” says Dr. Jackson, a cardiologist at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. “The hardest part is
getting people through the door before that.” Some people do have symptoms but most get ignored. You may experience the classic severe crushing chest pain. But some symptoms are subtle, especially in women — think shortness of breath, elbow pain or discomfort, or pain in one arm. “Don’t assume discomforts are muscular,” Dr. Jackson explains. “People who do the best are the ones that prevent.” A diet low in cholesterol and fat is ideal for heart health. Another form of preventative medicine is aerobic exercise at least four times a week. While diet and exercise play a role in heart health, not smoking trumps them all. “If I could wave a magic wand, cigarettes would be gone tomorrow,” Dr. Jackson says. “We would lose the amount of patients we see and that would be just fine.” But even if you do the right things — as Mark did — heart attacks are still silent killers. The easiest way to find out if you have a heart problem is by getting a CardioScan at St.
:
Luke’s (saintlukeshealthsystem.org/cardiovascular-imaging-cardioscan). This painless scan takes fewer than 10 minutes, and you and your doctor will have the results immediately. The scan tells you how much coronary calcification is in your arteries. Insurance does not cover the scan, but it costs just $50. If he’d had the scan, it would have shown a significant amount of calcification. Mark then would have been referred to a cardiologist for further testing. “I would think Mark would say it is the best $50 you could ever spend,” Paul says. “I know he wouldn’t want anyone to go through what our family has gone through.”
estimated the impact death has on a family. I never thought this would happen to our family. Never. It’s something I don’t wish on anybody. It’s devastating.” There was no warning when Mark passed away. But if Mark’s story encourages just one person to get tested, his family knows Mark is helping to make heart disease not so silent.
Since Mark’s death, the Weddle family has encouraged everyone they know to get a CardioScan. His high cholesterol may have played a role in leading up to his death. Because Mark’s brother, sister, and daughter also have tested for high cholesterol, they are all being treated with medicine. “I work in health care,” Gina shares. “I under-

The No-Nonsense Guide to Buying Appliances
BY BRIDGET MASON HESS
In the market for a new refrigerator, treadmill, or toaster? Keeping your eye on the latest energyefficient washer and dryer models? Then you’re in luck. We put together some buyer guidelines to consider before making your next appliance purchases. 34
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Where to shop In its “best places to buy appliances” article, published last spring, Consumer Reports mentions that Best Buy and Costco had some of the lowest prices for large appliances, and suggests Bed Bath & Beyond and Kohl’s as good places to buy small appliances. Kansas City, of course, has all of these shopping options and more, including some locally owned appliance stores. Consumer Reports notes that while the big stores are often the first that come to mind for appliance purchases, online appliance sales are on the rise. The magazine suggests checking with locally owned stores, as well, as they might offer the best customer service and most knowledgeable staff. Before you go shop, take a little time to peruse the advertisements and do some online research so you will be armed with some good information about what you are looking for and
have a price point in mind — many retailers often are willing to match a competitor’s sale price. Finally, don’t forget that second-hand shopping is always an option, too. While the inventory on websites such as Craigslist or at estate sales and second-hand shops is hitor-miss, you never know when someone else might need to unload a gently used treasure. You just might be one of those lucky ones to find excellent second-hand deals on highquality appliances and furniture. It’s worth a look!
When to shop Huge caveat here: Most of us make major appliance purchases only when the old one goes kaput or when we move to a new house. But if you do have some wiggle room on when to buy or are able to plan ahead (sometimes you just know the dishwasher
you’ve had for 15 years is on its last leg!), here are some things to keep in mind: Generally, you can get the best price on a large appliance when the new models arrive by purchasing last year’s style. This means that the beginning of the year is often a good time to buy appliances. Stores often run sales on holidays such as President’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day. If you want to increase your odds of getting more time and attention from a salesperson and don’t want to deal with big crowds and long lines, try to shop on a weekday. Consider buying appliances at the end of their season — for example, buy your snow blower when it goes on end-of-winter sale, or buy your new grill in the fall to get the close-out price.
Can you haggle on price? It would not occur to many of us to question the sticker price on an appliance, but expert shoppers will tell you that prices on many large-ticket items often are negotiable. Be polite, and simply ask, “Is this the best price you can offer?” You may be surprised that the sales associate is willing to come down a little in price if they are trying to meet a monthend quota or make room for new inventory. Always do your research before you buy so you have an idea of what a good price is. And don’t forget to ask for a price match if another retailer is running a better deal — it might help to bring the sale ad along.
A word on warranties
ties, money spent on a service plan likely will be money down the drain. This is because appliances don’t typically break within the time period of an extended warranty, and if they do, they already might be covered by the standard manufacturer’s warranty, by the store where you purchased it, or might not cost much to repair. It is a good idea to hang onto copies of paperwork, such as the manufacturer’s warranty and the store receipt, when you make a major appliance purchase. A simple three-ring binder with clear plastic pockets or page protectors works great for organizing appliance warranties and other pertinent household paperwork.
It is typically not necessary to buy the extended warranty on a new appliance. According to a Consumer Reports article about warran-

PARENTING
THINK OUTSIDE THE LUNCH BOX BY MELANIE KNOPKE Photos / Yumboxes
Yumboxes make packing exciting lunches easier.
These days, we think about food differently for our kids. With the rise of food allergies, packing the school lunch is not as easy as it used to be. Some classrooms now require every student to pack a “nut-free” lunch. Many families have gone gluten- or dairy-free, which also makes packing a lunch more difficult. The classic peanut butter and jelly with a bag of chips has been replaced with more healthful and well-rounded options for our kids. But if you find yourself in a lunch-bag slump, here are some ideas to help you think outside of the classic lunch box.
BENTO-BOXED LUNCH A bento box is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, and pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a boxshaped container. Bento boxes are readily available in many places
36
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
throughout Japan, including convenience stores, bento shops, railway stations, and department stores. However, Japanese homemakers often carefully prepare the lunch box for their spouse, child, or themselves. So, of course, some innovative parent out there took this idea and created a more “Americanized” bento box for children’s lunches. Most of the time, these boxes include a mix of fruits and vegetables, nuts, and uniquely shaped sandwiches or sandwich alternatives, such as meat and cheese rollups or salads. To create your own bento box, use little containers to store fruits, nuts, or veggies. Make sandwiches pretty by using cookie cut-
ters in the shape of a flower, heart, or star. The Alphamom blog (alphamom.com) suggests using silicone baking cups to keep small food items neatly stored. You can find bento boxes everywhere these days, from Target to Pottery Barn Kids. Some already come with the small containers, which take out the guess work for you. Yumbox (yumboxlunch.com) makes adorable boxes that don’t use separate containers. Instead they have spaces for each item — meaning fewer dishes for you to wash.
NO REFRIGERATION NECESSARY The reason a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, chips, and prepackaged snacks end up in the lunch box is because they do not need to be refrigerated. But there are so many more healthful options out there that don’t need to stay cold. Here are a few snack and lunch ideas:
Beef jerky: A solid source of protein. Nut butter: Great for peanut-free classrooms. It works well on celery, if you are a gluten-free family.
Dried fruit: This is the perfect way to get in a serving of fruit throughout the day. Apricots, raisins, cranberries, or apples are all tasty and good for you.

Hummus: Believe it or not, hummus works just fine at room temperature. Pack this with veggies or pita chips to dip.
Savory muffins: Bake a batch of bacon-and-cheese muffins for a filling, on-the-go meal.
DIG IN: BEYOND THE PB&J Keep the kids guessing with these five lunchbox creations.
Comfort food: Pair classic tomato soup (stored in an insulated soup container) with a ham-and-cheese sandwich.
Taco in a box: Fill a soft taco shell with lunch meat and shredded cheese. In containers on the side include salsa, guacamole, and shredded lettuce.
Salad in a bag: Fill a zip-lock bag with lettuce and their favorite veggies. Include a small container with dressing. All they have to do is add the dressing and shake up the bag for lunch.
Antipasto:
Give the kids crackers, cheese, meat, and dried fruit for a healthful lunch that’s fun for them to make.
Leftovers: Mac and cheese, casseroles, roast chicken, or turkey make great school lunches.

those hours of sleep debt? A conversation with two area sleep experts — Jason Graff, MD, and Bob Whitman, PhD, ABSM — revealed that you can change your sleeping patterns. But it’s a lot of work. “It is possible, but difficult,” says Dr. Graff, a medical director for sleep disorders at St. Luke’s. “For the majority of patients, bad sleep habits (such as excessive caffeine, or too many stimulating activities at night like TV and playing on a smartphone) are the main reasons why ‘night owls’ have a difficult time shifting their sleep schedules.” So, if you’re determined to welcome the first light of day with open arms, you first need to make sure you’re getting the right amount of sleep. Shoot for seven to nine hours, says Dr. Whitman, who is
fect our body clocks and control them as best as we can. So I’ve wondered: Is it possible for a night-owl to become a morning person? A way that doesn’t involve copious amounts of caffeine
Our circadian rhythms do continue to change throughout our lives, however. “We know that young children have a tendency for an ear-

As we age, there tends to be a progression back to an earlier bedtime.” So despite being a night owl now, it is quite possible I’ll finally become an early riser when I’m older. Still, that does me no good right now. So another rule to finally become a morning person, in addition to getting enough hours of shut-eye, is making sure you wake up at the same time every day. That means no sleeping in on the weekends. (But … but my bed is so comfortable and warm!) “Keeping strict bedtimes and wake times is very important,” Dr. Graff explains. “This holds true even after a bad night of sleep. ‘Sleeping in’ can entrain your circadian body clock to later sleep and wake times, perpetuating the problem.” Finally, don’t try to force yourself to get less sleep than what your body needs, he notes. “What people really want is their body clocks to be more in tune with the demands of their lives,” Dr. Graff says. But very few people can actually function on just five or six hours of sleep. Consequences of getting inadequate sleep, he says, include a higher risk for depression and anxiety, decreased sex drive, weight gain, and increased risk of diabetes and heart problems. So don’t

Take it a step further during the spring, summer, and fall by going for a 30-minute walk as soon as you wake up.

You can’t help but think about all of our wonderful barbeque restaurants and sauces born right here in Kansas City when you hear someone speak three little letters — BBQ. Meet Lesli Lundquist: A passion for cooking? Nope, not really! However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, homecooked meals.

ALTERNATIVES
to Valentine’s dinners 1 Hit the ice.
Lace up some skates at rinks in Leawood or Kansas City, Mo., and spend the evening holding hands and clinging to each other to stay on two feet. Then warm up with some (spiked) hot cocoa.
2 Learn all about love in the animal world.
The Kansas City Zoo will be hosting its annual “Kiss & Tail” this Valentine’s Day from 5 to 8 p.m. The presentation, featuring Ron Magill from Zoo Miami, promises to be entertaining. Plus, you’ll be treated to live music, a silent auction, great snacks, and refreshing beverages.
3 Introduce a little friendly competition.
Heat things up with your sweetheart at Jaegers Subsurface Paintball and/or Jaegerz Laser Tag. The arenas are situated in a Kansas City, Mo., cave. In both games, opponents open fire on one another as they take cover behind obstacles. This activity is sure to get your heart rate up.
4 Strip down to your skivvies …
… And go for an outdoor run! Cupid’s Undie Run starts at 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at McFadden’s in the Power & Light District. You really do strip down and take to the streets to jog with hundreds of other half-naked runners. The run benefits the Children’s Tumor Foundation to aid in ending neurofibromatosis through research.
5 Celebrate an anti-Valentine’s Day.
Weston Wine Co. is hosting its “Just Say No to V.D. Party,” which includes wine tastings, savory junk food, and a viewing of the movie, So I Married an AxeMurderer in the winery’s cellar. Reserve your spot at westonwinecompany.com/ upcoming-events-2.
6
Donate blood together. This Valentine’s Day, give someone else a gift that’s truly from the heart. The supply usually dwindles in the winter months, according to the American Red Cross, because winter storms force blood-drive cancellations nationwide. Visit redcross.org/mo/kansas-city to find one near you.
7
Skip the V-Day celebration altogether. Instead, celebrate Mardi Gras. First, hit the Masquerade Party on Feb. 13 at The Gallery & Kill Devil Club, then head back to Power & Light the next day for the street festival, which features a 5K, live music, Cajun cook-off, eating contests, bar crawl, and more. Visit mardigraskc.com for all the details.
