AROUND TOWN tumor — stage four brain cancer. Of course, the diagnosis came as a shock to everyone in the Anthony family. The 34-year-old father with two young children was an active runner and in great shape. But serious headaches and what later was determined to be a seizure sent him to the emergency room. The following day, doctors discovered the GBM tumor, a lethal form of brain cancer. Following surgery and diagnosis, Chris immediately pursued treatment. Throughout it all, Matt says, his brother maintained an extraordinary perspective. He continued to work, in addition to spending time with his young family, savoring every moment spent with them, and doing the things he loved, including exercising. “He tried to run as much as he could,” Matt shares. “Sometimes it would be a mile, or a block. Sometimes it would be down the driveway. Just to keep his life in balance — to keep living.” Two years after the diagnosis, Chris suggested a 5K run to raise awareness and research funding for brain cancer. Sadly, he passed before he could see his idea come to fruition. So Matt and Chris’s wife, Kirsten, tapped their large network of family, friends, and work colleagues at VML to organize a 5K run/walk in the Kansas City area to honor Chris. The inaugural run, called Head for the Cure (HFTC) 5K, was conducted in October 2003 at Corporate Woods in Overland Park. It attracted about 400 people and raised nearly $18,000. “We were energized,” Matt recalls. “And because we made a promise to Chris to direct the money toward cancer research, we granted the proceeds to the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he was treated. What’s more, we resolved to stage Head for the Cure again the following year.”

Matt Anthony, chairman of the Head for the Cure Foundation, will tell you that every big moment in history has a specific starting point — a tragic or challenging event, for example. It’s how you react to that challenge that creates opportunity and purpose. Such is the case for the Head for the Cure Foundation and the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC) — two separate organizations with a shared purpose, working together to connect fundraising to science. In October 2000, Matt’s younger brother, Chris, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
The second year of the HFTC 5k was even more profitable — attracting 600 runners and raising nearly $40,000 for brain cancer research. The event continued to grow year after year. “After the 2006 event, I said, ‘OK, now we have to get serious about our organization,’” Matt explains, “because we were starting to raise some real money.” He established the Head for the Cure Foundation and put a board of directors in place to steward the funds and ignite further growth. The challenge now was deciding what to do with the money that had been raised, which, by that time, amounted to more than $150,000. The Foundation decided the funds would seed development of the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC), an organization founded by Dr. Mark Gilbert of MD Anderson Cancer Center, Chris’s neuro-oncologist and a longtime partner of Head for the Cure. The BTTC is a network of 24 brain cancer centers, operating within large cancer institutions across the country, that are dedicated to the treatment and research of malignant brain tumors and to investigating new treatments and participating in cutting-edge clinical trials. “Starting in 2006, we brought together these two organizations, where fundraising and awareness meets science,” Matt explains.
“Our foundation has a unique relationship with the physicians and scientists who spend their days in the best institutions in the country researching this wicked disease in hopes of finding a cure.”
GOING NATIONAL
certainly hope and keep fighting toward a cure. No doubt, progress is being made. But the average lifespan has increased only by a matter of months,” he adds. “So while there are new and promising discoveries all the time, the need to continue this grassroots fundraising initiative is vital.”
The Head for the Cure Foundation has since grown to include a full-time staff of five that has expanded its 5K run/walks to 20 cities. What started off with a few hundred people now attracts more than 20,000 participants across the nation every year — and has raised more than $4 million for brain cancer research. Locally, the Head for the Cure 5K has become one of the biggest and most festive, with more than 5,000 participants. About 25 percent of all donations are raised in Kansas City. And while family members organized this event to honor Chris’s legacy, it has come to mean so much to all those who participate and volunteer for the event. “For this community, for the people facing this particular kind of cancer, we offer support and inspire hope,” Matt shares. “It’s a celebration of solidarity for those who are fighting and those whose memories we are honoring.” Looking toward the future, Matt intends to continue the foundation’s mission of increasing awareness and fundraising for research into this disease, while providing support to those affected. “We

I don’t wash my hair every day. This is why I stockpile bottles of Batiste Dry Shampoo. Of all the brands I’ve tried — and believe me, I’ve gone through tons — this is the only one that cuts the grease without making it too powdery and gives my hair volume even on day three of no washing. I especially love the cherry scent. It is the perfect subtle, sweet fragrance for my locks.

I naturally have big, frizzy hair. It is sometimes a nightmare to tame, which is why I cannot do without this hair serum. You only need two pumps from the little orange bottle to transform crazy curls into silk. Simply massage the cream, made with shea butter and silk extract, into your damp hair and comb it through.

I cannot live without my CHI flat iron. It makes my hair look shiny, soft, and healthy. Plus, it is a breeze to use. It gives me a salon-look in no time!
Health must-haves NutriBullet — Mary Edwards
It seems like smoothies and juicing have taken hold of health nuts everywhere. It took me awhile to get on the bandwagon until the day I purchased the NutriBullet. I now blend up veggies and fruits for delicious and healthful snacks and meals. The NutriBullet is designed to help extract nutrients from seeds and other food items for optimal nutrient consumption, and it won’t break the bank like a Vitamix.

I start taking Airborne a week or two before I plan to travel by air to bolster my immune system against whatever illnesses my fellow

IN FOCUS been the most rewarding — helping her clients get relief from chronic pain. “Pilates is an amazing form of corrective movement. By watching our clients move, we can identify misaligned joints and weak muscles, and help clients achieve better alignment and strength,” says Jessee, who also holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise and fitness and a master’s degree in higher education administration in exercise physiology. Although she found Pilates to be effective in providing relief for her clients, occasionally her clients’ pain would return. “I started thinking there was something missing,” she says. Eager to learn more about how she could help her clients live healthy, active, and pain-free lives, Jessee started investigating other modalities and approaches to complement her Pilates and fitness training. It was this investigation that led her to NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT). Developed in 1985 by David Weinstock, NKT is a methodology that combines manual muscle testing to identify dysfunctional movement patterns with targeted exercises to retrain the muscles and joints impacted by the ineffective movement. After researching NKT further, Jessee was convinced, and within a month she’d completed the first level of training. Amanda Jessee (left) and Carrie Cohn, owners of Personal Best Pilates.

“It was pretty profound actually,” she says. “I always thought I was seeing half the equation, and now I know that was true. NKT was the missing link, and it was a huge realization. It changed the way I teach Pilates and the way I look at the body.”

the studio allows Personal Best to provide an entirely new set of services. NKT can help all types of clients, not just those who are suffering from pain. Cohn adds that athletes also find NKT particularly beneficial as they’re able to perform at their best once identifying and correcting ineffective movement patterns.
NKT is a perfect f it with Pilates, especially for those clients dealing with chronic pain. Jessee has undergone training for all three levels of NKT, and she is the only practitioner to do so within a five-state area — out of Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. Established in 2000, Personal Best Pilates Studio is the largest Pilates-only fitness studio in the Kansas City metro area. In addition to NeuroKinetic Therapy and Pilates, the studio also offers massage therapy and an activewear boutique. example, a torn muscle or trauma to a joint. But other times, the cause of pain is neuromuscular, meaning the brain is not communicating with the muscles, and faulty movement patterns can develop. Put another way, the brain is sending “mixed messages” to the muscles. Until the neuromuscular signals can be addressed, the movement patterns causing the pain will continue. Jessee uses NKT to identify relationships between two or more muscles that are receiving mixed messages from the brain. Once the relationship is identified, clients are given exercises to correct the dysfunctional neuromuscular pattern. “It’s an amazing diagnostic tool we can use in our Pilates studio to help identify the cause of pain,” she shares. “It’s not physical therapy, it’s not chiropractic or manual adjustments. It’s diagnostic.” Jessee is quick to point out that NKT deals with the neuromuscular system rather than just the muscles. The homework exercises are typically not difficult because sessions are about retraining the communication between the brain and muscles. “I’m not trying to strengthen the muscle, I’m trying to strengthen the message to the muscle,” she explains.

IN FOCUS THINK YOU KNOW SOLARIUM? THINK AGAIN BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Kelly Chamberlain
If tanning is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Solarium, you just might be in for a surprise. The 20-year-old company has expanded its services, making Solarium your onestop shop for beauty and spa treatments. The newest spa service available at Solarium is the FIT Bodywrap, which differs from other types of body wraps because it uses infrared heat to target fat-burning. In each 60-minute treatment, you can burn up to 1,000 calories, the equivalent of a one-hour cardio workout. “But the FIT Bodywrap is more than just a weight loss system,” stresses Solarium Regional Manager Natalie Finkemeier. It also decreases cellulite and tightens and rejuvenates skin. Finkemeier says there is an increase of blood to the muscles and joints, which accelerates the healing process. Users have reported a 50 percent to 70 percent decrease in chronic pain after just one session, she says. Additionally, you will see an increase in metabolism and overall circulation, resulting in a total body detox.

The latter is precisely why personal trainer and Solarium client, Katie Buell, started using the FIT Bodywrap to help rid her body of heavy metal toxins. “The dry sauna at the gym just wasn’t cutting it,” Buell says. She initially purchased body wraps and went for treatments a couple of times per week. “At that rate, within several weeks my digestive system improved 100 percent.” Before she started us-
ing the FIT Bodywrap system, Buell blended her meat protein every day just so her body could digest it without her feeling as though she might become sick to her stomach. Now, she says, she is able to eat solid meat protein again.
The Infrared FIT Bodywrap and Collagen Red Light Therapy are available only at the following Solarium locations: 15240 W. 119th St. in Olathe (913.254.1922) and 13400 Metcalf in the Shoppes at Deer Creek Woods in Overland Park (913.681.2353).
Once Buell completed her initial body wraps, she invested in the monthly membership, which offers an unlimited number of body wraps every month. She goes a few times per week. Less than two months after starting the treatment, Buell was shocked to discover she had shed an entire clothing size. “I was so focused on my internal health when I started doing the FIT Bodywraps that I didn’t give any thought to my external body and what was happening to it in the process,” she shares. “What an incredibly nice surprise!”
Take advantage of Solarium’s introductory offer and receive 50 percent off your first infrared body wrap session.
Buell stresses that her daily nutrition is healthy and she makes sure she drinks the recommended 16 ounces of water before each treatment, another 16 ounces during her treatment, and yet another 16 ounces after the treatment to replace the f luid that is lost during the FIT Bodywrap. Buell’s health continues to improve with each session, she says, to the point where she can indulge in a few treats each week for the first time in years, “without my body swelling up or my belly screaming in pain afterward.” She feels this is directly the result of FIT Bodywrap’s infrared detox.
Solarium has expanded its services to include body wraps, infrared therapy, and cutting-edge spray tanning.

Solarium also boasts the new 2015 VersaSpa solution for its 100 percent UV-free spray-tan machine. “Micromist spray technology ensures the most even, natural-looking color,” Finkemeier explains. You can customize your results (light/natural/dark) from the beautiful, natural-looking color spectrum available to you. A benefit of this solution is that it dries faster and develops in just two hours instead of the six to eight hours for other types of spray tans. In addition, odor-ban technology ensures your results have no observable odor.

HOME & GARDEN
a burglar’s hit list, according to Consumer Reports. And although many of these tips may sound like common sense, the reality is that most of us are just forget to take these simple steps to protect against being an easy target.
1
Don’t advertise a vacation. Repeat — do not brag to your friends on Facebook or other social media sites when you are leaving town. Wait until you’re back to post about it. For that matter, think twice before posting that you are out somewhere currently with friends. It lets others know you are gone. Also, take some extra steps to make it look like someone is home — put a few lights in the house on a timer or place an inexpensive child’s toy in the yard.
2
Turn on your alarm when you leave home, not just at night before you go to bed. A Consumer Reports study reveals that 43 percent of people do not turn on their alarm when they aren’t home. Don’t forget to place alarm signage in your landscaping and stickers in your windows as a deterrent from break-ins.
SIMPLE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME: HOW SECURE ARE YOU? BY SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE STAFF
Things aren’t the way they “used to be.” Older generations may wax on about how no one had to lock their doors growing up — even at night. Children would go off and play all day during the summer, and no one knew where they were. But they always came home when it got dark, and they were fine. No one worried. Unfortunately, that is not how the world is today. We have locks and alarm systems along with cell phones to check in with our loved ones. Security. How secure is your home, though? According to the FBI, a home burglary occurs every 15 seconds. There are, however, some simple measures you can take to improve your security and protect your home from making
30
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
3
Don’t make a break-in a “walk-in.” Bob Portenier, a former burglar and now a consultant and lecturer in Topeka, Kan. insists that about half of “break-ins” are actually “walk-ins.” Many of us, in our busy lives, rush out the door on our way to meetings, appointments, and kids’ activities and forget to close that window, check the sliding glass door, or let the pet out and forget to lock the back door. Take a few extra minutes to double check all those things before you leave.
4
Make sure your garage door remains closed. Leaving your garage door open allows a burglar free admission to everything stored in the garage — your golf clubs, tools, and car, to name a few. It also allows a thief access to work undercover, hiding where neighbors can’t see, as well as giving access to an interior door
that leads into the house. Don’t forget to lock that door as well.
5
Trim back all landscaping around your home. Tall hedges, bushes, and low limbs of trees give potential thieves a place to hide while they are doing their work. Don’t forget to trim tree limbs close to the house near second story windows that would provide cover to a potential thief.
6
Don’t leave blinds fully open. Many times, a burglar will target a house and just look in at what is in plain sight and what kind of valuables are in the house. It gives the crook an idea of how your family spends your money. Simply make it harder
to see what’s in the house. If you do not have blinds, consider putting up curtains or mirror-tinted glass to curb what a potential thief can see in your home.
7
Keep your lawn mowed. A tall lawn tells a thief that no one is home, as do piled up newspapers and mail. Have a neighbor pick up your papers and mail for you while you are out of town.
8
Install quality locks. Make sure you have a good deadbolt door lock. Also, strengthen the door frame with three-inch screws in your door hinges and strike plate. Many home owners’ insurance policies have discounts for homes with deadbolt locks. State Farm
Insurance Co. recommends using ANSI Grade 1 locks.
9
Consider installing motion-sensor lighting around your home. Or at least turn on the front and back porch lights at night. You also can contact your local law enforcement agency to request a professional home safety survey. For example, Shawnee residents can schedule a security survey by visiting the Shawnee Police webpage at cityofshawnee.org/police and clicking on “Residential Security Assessments.” Leawood residents can do their own surveys by using the checklist on the Leawood Police Department website. Other Johnson County police departments also offer security surveys.

the nerves, no one knows — but they showed the world how well wine and art go together. You don’t need to be one of the world’s greats to enjoy the life of an artist. You just need a few friends for conversation, a bottle of wine, and sense of humor. In 2012, Grapes & Paints was Kansas City’s first social BYOB painting studio. The concept: A local artist guides you stroke-by-stroke on how to create a canvas painting of your party’s choice. The studio provides all the materials you need to paint your own masterpiece to take home. And the best part is ... You don’t have to help set up or clean up — Grapes & Paints does it all! But this is not a serious art class — it’s a private art party. You and your friends will have the art studio with a local artist all to yourself. You are welcome to bring your own beverages and appetizers. Any art experience can be left at home. “Ninety-nine percent of the people who walk in the studio say they haven’t picked up a paint brush since grade school,” says Amy Pappas, owner of Grapes & Paints. “But then they leave astonished with their masterpieces.” Sure, the wine might help. The inhibitions are gone. The brush is held a little looser. But the wine isn’t the one that paints. You are. People come back to Grapes & Paints for the artists who teach them.

MERLOT AND VAN GOGH: A PARTY COMBINATION BY JULIE BURTON
“Everyone has creativity,” Pappas says. “I’m selective about who I hire as artists. I want to make people feel at ease as soon as they walk in the studio. I look for energetic, patient, nonjudgmental, hands-on artists. Most parties run over the two-hour time slot because no one is in a hurry to leave. We get carried away having too much fun.”

The definition of “fun” is really up to the customer. “At our location we see a variety of parties come through our door,” she adds. “There might be a group of older ladies looking to rekindle their creativity with longtime friends,
while at times we see several groups of 20- to 30-year olds laughing and dancing to current pop music. There simply isn’t any limit to who walks through our door, and we like it that way. It’s like a massage. Everyone leaves happy.” And how could someone not leave happy when Pappas has built her business on what her customers want? The color palette of any painting can easily be switched to make your piece match your home decor. You also can submit an idea prior to your party and the artist will create a custom painting for your event. “One of the sweetest paintings I have seen was by a woman who had just lost her husband,” Pappas recalls. “She chose to paint a black-and-white park bench with a large red tree over the bench. She wanted to add her and her husband’s silhouettes on the bench but didn’t know how. Our artist came over and asked permission to paint them in. It was a touching moment.”

Painting pieces change with the seasons, although collegiate pieces are popular year-round, Pappas says. The Kansas City Plaza lights are popular during the holidays. You can even go home holding your own version of Starry Night, with a little help from your favorite beverage, of course. Grapes & Paints is located at 7175 W. 95th St. in Overland Park. Grapes & Paints also travels off-site for group and corporate events that can accommodate more than 100 people. Businesses bring in artists for team-building exercises or just to take a break during the day. It’s not uncommon for bridal parties to paint a large mural together. Pappas offers a tiered pricing system. Parties of five to nine people cost $45 per person, 10 to 14 people cost $40 per person, and 15 or more people cost $35 a person. Grapes & Paints also hosts children’s birthday parties for $25 per child. Public nights
At laid-back painting parties, painters enjoy adult beverages as local artists guide provide lessons stroke-by-stroke through painting a featured piece.

The True Cost of Eating Healthy BY BRIDGET MASON HESS

healthy needn’t be more expensive.
“Spend your money on food, not convenience,” Kirchoff says. “Compare a bag of potato chips, for example, to a bag of apples. They might both cost around $3. A family of four could eat the bag of potato chips in one snack, while the bag of apples could be eight snacks for the family and be much more nutritious.” With the overwhelming amount of evidence that eating poorly can lead to health problems, the real question we should be asking ourselves is: How can we afford not to eat healthfully? Here are a few tips for how to make eating right more affordable and convenient:
• Buy fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in-season or on sale. You don’t have to scour ads and coupons to do this. It can be as simple as not buying from the first produce display you see in the front of the
store. Often, the better-priced deals are deeper into the produce section. Simply pay attention to the price per pound.
• Make weeknights easier by preparing salads, making homemade soups, chopping fresh vegetables and fruits for snacks, or roasting vegetables for side dishes on the weekend. With a bit of weekend prep, you not only will eat healthier on busy weeknights, but you also will spend less money going out to eat and avoid those not-so-nutritious drivethru choices.
• Kirchoff suggests that what she calls “planned-overs” are great time- and money-savers. Cook extra chicken tonight to go into tomorrow night’s dinner too, especially if you know you’ll have less time to prep dinner tomorrow.
• Two foods that are both nutritious and inexpensive are eggs and beans, she says. Eggs don’t have to strictly be a breakfast food. She also recommends stretching meat further by adding beans to a dish.
For example, you can substitute some of the meat in tacos for beans, which reduces the amount spent on meat and also adds nutrition.
• Limit the pre-packaged convenience foods you buy. The mark-up for individually wrapped packages (and the environmental impact) is often astronomical, and those packaged foods tend to be less healthful. Kirchoff suggests that even a side dish of rice with the seasoning packet already in the box, for example, is pricier than cooking plain rice and adding your own spices.
• Finally, consider putting some of these into your cart, according to WebMD: brown rice, multigrain pasta, whole-wheat bread, nonfat Greek yogurt, old-fashioned oatmeal, frozen vegetables, russet potatoes, fresh bagged spinach, canned tuna, canned refried beans, jarred marinara sauce, storebrand egg substitute, whole-wheat pita bread, frozen edamame (soybeans), and dried lentils.

PARENTING
Hide and Seek: Helping Shy Kids Come out of Their Shell BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE
Some children appear to have only a few close friends, do more listening than talking, prefer activities that involve a small number of people or none at all, and tend to watch a game or other activity for awhile before joining in. If you’ve noticed some or all of these behaviors in your own child, you may have attributed this to shyness when it could be that they are actually introverted. People often confuse being shy with being an introvert, but they aren’t the same thing — although they may look the same. A big difference between the two behaviors is how a person feels about his lack of social interaction or his desire for constant companionship. An introvert enjoys time alone and gets emotionally drained after spending a lot of time with others. A shy person, on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily want to be alone but is afraid to interact
36
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
with others. These kids are the ones who long for a big group of friends, but just can’t bring themselves to reach out. If you determine that your child is shy — as opposed to introverted with a preference for quiet, minimally stimulating environments — you may notice that she often struggles in social settings. As a parent, you likely struggle, too, as you witness her discomfort and wish you knew how best to help. Eric Fisher, PhD, a clinical psychologist and author of The Art of Empowered Parenting: The
Manual You Wish Your Kids Came With, urges you to be extremely slow and deliberate in your actions around your child. “Not only do shy kids need time to warm up, but it’s also best when they’re as prepared as possible for any situation,” explains Dr. Fisher, who lives in Lawrenceville, Ga. Although this approach may require more effort on your part, taking some extra steps may help ease your shy child out of her shell. When it comes to dealing with change, such as the start of a new school year, patience — and a lot of preparation — is especially important. One of the best ways to help decrease shyness, Dr. Fisher says, is to enroll your kid in sports. “Athletics offer interaction with other kids and can really boost self esteem,” he says. While team sports are a great option, Fisher specifically recommends those with one-on-one interaction, such as tennis, karate, swimming, and gymnastics, which allow kids to shine individually without being overwhelmed by having to compete for field time. If your child is not into sports, activities such as theater or dance offer routine structure and interaction with others. While shy kids may need a little more TLC than those who are not shy, you don’t want to become your child’s sidekick. You also should resist the urge to be his spokesperson when he is being particularly shy, as difficult as that may be. “This tends to send a message that you do not see him as capable of answering for himself,” says Dr. Vicki Folds, a Miami-based leading expert in early childhood development. Instead, she suggests saying, “He’ll answer when he’s ready.” This may be followed by an awkward silence, but at least your child will know that you believe in his ability to answer for himself, which may eventually lead to him believing in himself as well. Another great reason for helping your child come out of her shell sooner rather than later: While parents sometimes excuse a shy child’s behavior when she turns away or otherwise does not respond when someone speaks to them, this same behavior is considered impolite when exhibited by an adult. Helping her learn good manners and how to interact appropriately despite her shyness will go a long way toward helping her achieve life goals. Finally, professional knowledge certainly is helpful for learning about many areas of life, including shyness. But hearing from those who are in the trenches — in this case, kids who are shy and parents of shy kids — also can be helpful. Fortunately, you can get solid advice on helping your kids overcome shyness at shykids.com, which is “staffed by former shy kids, blossoming shy kids, and parents helping them along the way.”

OUR WORLD
BY MARY EDWARDS
THE WATER CRISIS: OUR DEPLETING GROUNDWATER One single drop of water contains, simply, the essence of our life. It is what sustains us, grows our plants, keeps us clean and healthy. Yet, that essence of life is becoming scarcer. We are beginning to take it for granted. The water crisis is becoming more of a reality with each passing day. California, for example, has been battling a four-year drought, relying on groundwater to quench residents’ thirst.
38
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
But groundwater is not a renewable resource. It comes from underground aquifers, which are a layer of water filled with sediment, and is removed using a well system. And because water found above ground is decreasing, the nation has begun tapping the aquifers, which are being depleted at an alarming rate. According to a 2014 National Geographic article, agriculture uses up more than 60 percent of the freshwater on the planet, and is the largest reason we’re seeing a decrease in groundwater. Yet, we also need the crops using the water to survive.
Rainfall hasn’t been a reliable source of water, with drought threatening much of the world. We aren’t seeing our natural sources of freshwater replenish fast enough. The human race is in a predicament with what sources we still have. While California, the farming industry, and the rest of the world struggles in their need for water, being conscientious of your water use can make a big difference. So, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and washing your dishes — our groundwater resources will thank you.

BY JULIE BURTON
The Genetics of Cancer The chance of getting attacked and killed by a shark is one in 3,748,067. The chance of a fatal fireworks accident is one in 340,733. And the chance of dying from cancer is one in seven, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Many factors play into your individual chances, of course. If you
40
But there are some factors you do not have control over, such as inheriting mutated genes that will increase your risk for cancer. Fortunately, says Whitney Ford, a certified genetic counselor at St. Luke’s, “Only 10 percent of all cancers are hereditary. It’s very low.” It’s so low, in fact, that doctors don’t recommend genetic testing for the general population because they are not able to make a broad generalization. Most patients who opt for genetic testing have a family history of cancer.
WHAT GENETIC TESTING ENTAILS Doctors take a sample of blood or cheek cells to analyze an individual’s genetic material. In normal cells, certain genes help prevent cancer by making proteins that keep other cells from growing abnormally. Genetic testing allows doctors to see if those genes are mutated or damaged. The body has difficulty preventing cells from growing abnormally with damaged genes. So, for example, the breast and ovarian cancer genes are caused by mutations in one of two genes — BRCA1 or BRCA2. If the genes are damaged or mutated, the risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer substantially increase. Other cancers, such as prostate and pancreatic cancers, increase as well.

with a mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have an increased risk of cancer, including prostate cancer. The mutated genes of BRCA1 and BRCA2 have a 50 percent chance of being passed to offspring. Every patient must look at both sides of the family for a history of cancer.”
WHO SHOULD BE TESTED Ford recommends individuals come in for genetic counseling if they have the following criteria: • A known gene mutation in the family. • Multiple family members, on the maternal or paternal side, affected by the same or related cancer, such as breast or ovarian cancer. • An early-age cancer diagnosis (prior to age 50) • A triple negative breast cancer under the age of 60 • Patients with more than one cancer diagnosis or two different types of cancer • Patients with ovarian cancer • Patients with more than 10 colon polyps • An eastern European Jewish descent (Ashkenazi) plus one family member with cancer
TEST OUTCOMES If a genetic test is positive, it simply means you are at a greater risk for developing cancer. For women, the risk of getting breast cancer with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 abnormality can be as high as 80 percent.

A woman’s ovarian cancer risk can increase to 40 percent. Some individuals will never get cancer, even with a mutated gene. Options from that point will be up to you and your doctor. Some women choose to remove the breasts or ovaries. Other options include cancer screenings every six months and taking antiestrogen drugs to lower the risk of cancer developing. But even if your test results are negative, you are still at risk for developing cancer. If your family has a high incidence of a certain type of cancer and you test negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, there are other genes doctors can check for mutations. But keep in mind that genetics are not the only indications.

“The field of genetic testing is moving rapidly in identifying other mutations in genes,” Ford says. “But it just lets us know our patient’s risk. Wash, dry, and cut the lettuce if needed. Cut and prepare the pomegranate seeds. Combine lettuce, pomegranate seeds, and sliced almonds, and drizzle the vinaigrette over ingredients. the best swimsuits for your body
It is never too early to start searching for the perfect swimsuit and coverup. This month is spring break, and before we know it, the pools will be opening for summer!
If you dread swimsuit shopping, head over to Nani Nalu, a beachwear boutique new to KC. It’ s personal shopping service pairs each guest with a fit expert who helps select and recommend styles, silhouettes, and sizes based on bra and pant measurements, torso height, skin tone, and more. Jennifer Cermak, owner of Nani Nalu on the Plaza shares the top swimwear trends to look for this year.

Back detail
Mesh, peek-a-boos, and overlays were huge in the contemporary and sport lines at shows. This is a trend everyone can wear and one that is not likely to go out of style. A simple mesh panel with a seethrough detail adds allure to an easy-to-wear basic suit. Featured: Jets Mesh White Plunge Mio
The rashguard is the newest sport piece to cross over into high-fashion swim collections. Typically, surfers and board-sport enthusiasts wear one to prevent a rash on the chest and stomach, but many women have hopped onto the idea for coverage. Featured: Seafolly Kimono Rose Rashguard
Big and bold as well as whimsical soft and feminine florals are huge for spring. No matter what mood you are in, make sure the floral print you pick is spaced evenly. Also keep in mind that all-over patterns smooth the visual eye, hiding some of our bulges and bumps. Featured: Lenny Niemeyer Maldives Bikini
Gone are the days of T-shirts and shorts at resorts — we want to see caftans, tunics, and maxi dresses hit the shores and poolside stride. It is also a way to give yourself a little more coverage, and still do it in style. Featured: Lenny Niemeyer Oca Mini Dress
Designers have finally figured out women want to look good in a swimsuit 360 degrees. This is the first year we are seeing so much attention paid to the back of a swimsuit, in both function and fashion, from low backs, macramé details, and functional adjustable straps. Featured: Badgley Mischka Dip Back Maillot Swimsuit
All these suits are available at Nani Nalu (swimkc.com) on the Country Club Plaza, 421 W. 47th St., Kansas City, MO

MUST-VISIT
clothing boutiques 1 Boutique Chic
This shop in Mission Farms is brimming with style. Best of all, everything is one-of-a-kind. The mother-and-daughter team caters to a wide range of sizes, from 2 to 20. And the women frequently help customers put together outfits, and encourage you to bring in clothing from your own closet to help you find the pieces that will complete your wardrobe.
2 Frankly Basic Boutique
This women’s clothing shop offers high-quality accessories and basics in solid colors, plus a limited selection of patterned tops and dresses. Owner Kris Koenig has described the boutique’s style as a cross between Anthropologie and J.Crew, but at more affordable prices. Find Frankly Basic in Brookside and Town Center in Overland Park.
3 Tulip
For those who like to be stylish without breaking the bank, Tulip should top the list. This Plaza boutique spans ages and backgrounds, and truly offers something for everyone. You’ll discover trend-setting clothing, fun accessories, and unique gifts at the store.
Boutique Chic
4 Shopgirls
Perhaps you’re eyeing a piece in a shop but ultimately convince yourself you couldn’t possibly make it work. Well, the staff at Shopgirls in Brookside encourage you to try that new piece. They will help you style it, too. In addition to fun and trendy clothing, Shopgirls also provides closet-cleaning services, color analysis, personal shopping, and more.
5 Standard Style
Although on the pricier side, Standard Style offers a wide range of on-trend clothing and accessories from high-end designers. But if the thought of spending $700 on a jacket makes you cringe, stop by the store during sales. You can find the Standard Style at both One Nineteen in Leawood and on the Plaza.

The Garment District
Originally an online clothing boutique, TeaElla now calls Olathe home. The shop specializes in what owner Monica Redman refers to as “comfy chic.” Think casual basics such as tunics, yoga pants, leggings, and active wear. TeaElla also offers everyday styles and some trendier pieces. She strives to carry as many sizes as possible, from XS to 3X, in affordable prices.
Not just one shop, the Garment District is a collective of several local Kansas City boutiques for men and women, including Eyecandy, Frankie & Jules, Imagery, Label, RB Designs, Scoobie, The Paolini Garment Co. and AC78, and Two Chic Boulevard. While shopping, you can enjoy a cocktail or beer from the full-service bar.
