AROUND TOWN tumor — stage four brain cancer. Of course, the diagnosis came as a shock to everyone in the Anthony family. The 34-year-old father with two young children was an active runner and in great shape. But serious headaches and what later was determined to be a seizure sent him to the emergency room. The following day, doctors discovered the GBM tumor, a lethal form of brain cancer. Following surgery and diagnosis, Chris immediately pursued treatment. Throughout it all, Matt says, his brother maintained an extraordinary perspective. He continued to work, in addition to spending time with his young family, savoring every moment spent with them, and doing the things he loved, including exercising. “He tried to run as much as he could,” Matt shares. “Sometimes it would be a mile, or a block. Sometimes it would be down the driveway. Just to keep his life in balance — to keep living.” Two years after the diagnosis, Chris suggested a 5K run to raise awareness and research funding for brain cancer. Sadly, he passed before he could see his idea come to fruition. So Matt and Chris’s wife, Kirsten, tapped their large network of family, friends, and work colleagues at VML to organize a 5K run/walk in the Kansas City area to honor Chris. The inaugural run, called Head for the Cure (HFTC) 5K, was conducted in October 2003 at Corporate Woods in Overland Park. It attracted about 400 people and raised nearly $18,000. “We were energized,” Matt recalls. “And because we made a promise to Chris to direct the money toward cancer research, we granted the proceeds to the Chris Anthony Brain Tumor Research Fund at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he was treated. What’s more, we resolved to stage Head for the Cure again the following year.”

Matt Anthony, chairman of the Head for the Cure Foundation, will tell you that every big moment in history has a specific starting point — a tragic or challenging event, for example. It’s how you react to that challenge that creates opportunity and purpose. Such is the case for the Head for the Cure Foundation and the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC) — two separate organizations with a shared purpose, working together to connect fundraising to science. In October 2000, Matt’s younger brother, Chris, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain

The second year of the HFTC 5k was even more profitable — attracting 600 runners and raising nearly $40,000 for brain cancer research. The event continued to grow year after year. “After the 2006 event, I said, ‘OK, now we have to get serious about our organization,’” Matt explains, “because we were starting to raise some real money.” He established the Head for the Cure Foundation and put a board of directors in place to steward the funds and ignite further growth. The challenge now was deciding what to do with the money that had been raised, which, by that time, amounted to more than $150,000. The Foundation decided the funds would seed development of the Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative (BTTC), an organization founded by Dr. Mark Gilbert of MD Anderson Cancer Center, Chris’s neuro-oncologist and a longtime partner of Head for the Cure. The BTTC is a network of 24 brain cancer centers, operating within large cancer institutions across the country, that are dedicated to the treatment and research of malignant brain tumors and to investigating new treatments and participating in cutting-edge clinical trials. “Starting in 2006, we brought together these two organizations, where fundraising and awareness meets science,” Matt explains.


“Our foundation has a unique relationship with the physicians and scientists who spend their days in the best institutions in the country researching this wicked disease in hopes of finding a cure.”

certainly hope and keep fighting toward a cure. No doubt, progress is being made. But the average lifespan has increased only by a matter of months,” he adds. “So while there are new and promising discoveries all the time, the need to continue this grassroots fundraising initiative is vital.”

The Head for the Cure Foundation has since grown to include a full-time staff of five that has expanded its 5K run/walks to 20 cities. What started off with a few hundred people now attracts more than 20,000 participants across the nation every year — and has raised more than $4 million for brain cancer research. Locally, the Head for the Cure 5K has become one of the biggest and most festive, with more than 5,000 participants. About 25 percent of all donations are raised in Kansas City. And while family members organized this event to honor Chris’s legacy, it has come to mean so much to all those who participate and volunteer for the event. “For this community, for the people facing this particular kind of cancer, we offer support and inspire hope,” Matt shares. “It’s a celebration of solidarity for those who are fighting and those whose memories we are honoring.” Looking toward the future, Matt intends to continue the foundation’s mission of increasing awareness and fundraising for research into this disease, while providing support to those affected. “We

By watching our clients move, we can identify misaligned joints and weak muscles, and help clients achieve better alignment and strength,” says Jessee, who also holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise and fitness and a master’s degree in higher education administration in exercise physiology. Although she found Pilates to be effective in providing relief for her clients, occasionally her clients’ pain would return. “I started thinking there was something missing,” she says. Eager to learn more about how she could help her clients live healthy, active, and pain-free lives, Jessee started investigating other modalities and approaches to complement her Pilates and fitness training. It was this investigation that led her to NeuroKinetic Therapy (NKT). Developed in 1985 by David Weinstock, NKT is a methodology that combines manual muscle testing to identify dysfunctional movement patterns with targeted exercises to retrain the muscles and joints impacted by the ineffective movement. example, a torn muscle or trauma to a joint. But other times, the cause of pain is neuromuscular, meaning the brain is not communicating with the muscles, and faulty movement patterns can develop. Put another way, the brain is sending “mixed messages” to the muscles. Until the neuromuscular signals can be addressed, the movement patterns causing the pain will continue. Jessee uses NKT to identify relationships between two or more muscles that are receiving mixed messages from the brain. Once the relationship is identified, clients are given exercises to correct the dysfunctional neuromuscular pattern. “It’s an amazing diagnostic tool we can use in our Pilates studio to help identify the cause of pain,” she shares. “It’s not physical therapy, it’s not chiropractic or manual adjustments. It’s diagnostic.” Jessee is quick to point out that NKT deals with the neuromuscular system rather than just the muscles. The homework exercises are typically not difficult because sessions are about retraining the communication between the brain and muscles. “I’m not trying to strengthen the muscle, I’m trying to strengthen the message to the muscle,” she explains.

If tanning is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Solarium, you just might be in for a surprise. The newest spa service available at Solarium is the FIT Bodywrap, which differs from other types of body wraps because it uses infrared heat to target fat-burning. According to the FBI, a home burglary occurs every 15 seconds. There are, however, some simple measures you can take to improve your security and protect your home from making

Don’t make a break-in a “walk-in.” Bob Portenier, a former burglar and now a consultant and lecturer in Topeka, Kan. insists that about half of “break-ins” are actually “walk-ins.” Many of us, in our busy lives, rush out the door on our way to meetings, appointments, and kids’ activities and forget to close that window, check the sliding glass door, or let the pet out and forget to lock the back door. Take a few extra minutes to double check all those things before you leave.

Make sure your garage door remains closed. Leaving your garage door open allows a burglar free admission to everything stored in the garage — your golf clubs, tools, and car, to name a few. It also allows a thief access to work undercover, hiding where neighbors can’t see, as well as giving access to an interior door


that leads into the house. Don’t forget to lock that door as well.

Trim back all landscaping around your home. Tall hedges, bushes, and low limbs of trees give potential thieves a place to hide while they are doing their work. Don’t forget to trim tree limbs close to the house near second story windows that would provide cover to a potential thief.

Don’t leave blinds fully open. Many times, a burglar will target a house and just look in at what is in plain sight and what kind of valuables are in the house. It gives the crook an idea of how your family spends your money. Simply make it harder

to see what’s in the house. If you do not have blinds, consider putting up curtains or mirror-tinted glass to curb what a potential thief can see in your home.

Keep your lawn mowed. A tall lawn tells a thief that no one is home, as do piled up newspapers and mail. Have a neighbor pick up your papers and mail for you while you are out of town.

Install quality locks. Make sure you have a good deadbolt door lock. Also, strengthen the door frame with three-inch screws in your door hinges and strike plate. Many home owners’ insurance policies have discounts for homes with deadbolt locks. State Farm

Insurance Co. recommends using ANSI Grade 1 locks.

Consider installing motion-sensor lighting around your home. Or at least turn on the front and back porch lights at night. You also can contact your local law enforcement agency to request a professional home safety survey. store. Often, the better-priced deals are deeper into the produce section. Simply pay attention to the price per pound.

• Make weeknights easier by preparing salads, making homemade soups, chopping fresh vegetables and fruits for snacks, or roasting vegetables for side dishes on the weekend. With a bit of weekend prep, you not only will eat healthier on busy weeknights, but you also will spend less money going out to eat and avoid those not-so-nutritious drivethru choices.

• Kirchoff suggests that what she calls “planned-overs” are great time- and money-savers. Cook extra chicken tonight to go into tomorrow night’s dinner too, especially if you know you’ll have less time to prep dinner tomorrow.

• Two foods that are both nutritious and inexpensive are eggs and beans, she says. Eggs don’t have to strictly be a breakfast food. She also recommends stretching meat further by adding beans to a dish.

For example, you can substitute some of the meat in tacos for beans, which reduces the amount spent on meat and also adds nutrition.

• Limit the pre-packaged convenience foods you buy. The mark-up for individually wrapped packages (and the environmental impact) is often astronomical, and those packaged foods tend to be less healthful. Kirchoff suggests that even a side dish of rice with the seasoning packet already in the box, for example, is pricier than cooking plain rice and adding your own spices.

• Finally, consider putting some of these into your cart, according to WebMD: brown rice, multigrain pasta, whole-wheat bread, nonfat Greek yogurt, old-fashioned oatmeal, frozen vegetables, russet potatoes, fresh bagged spinach, canned tuna, canned refried beans, jarred marinara sauce, storebrand egg substitute, whole-wheat pita bread, frozen edamame (soybeans), and dried lentils.

Hide and Seek: Helping Shy Kids Come out of Their Shell BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE

Some children appear to have only a few close friends, do more listening than talking, prefer activities that involve a small number of people or none at all, and tend to watch a game or other activity for awhile before joining in. If you’ve noticed some or all of these behaviors in your own child, you may have attributed this to shyness when it could be that they are actually introverted. People often confuse being shy with being an introvert, but they aren’t the same thing — although they may look the same. A big difference between the two behaviors is how a person feels about his lack of social interaction or his desire for constant companionship. An introvert enjoys time alone and gets emotionally drained after spending a lot of time with others. A shy person, on the other hand, doesn’t necessarily want to be alone but is afraid to interact

with others. These kids are the ones who long for a big group of friends, but just can’t bring themselves to reach out. If you determine that your child is shy — as opposed to introverted with a preference for quiet, minimally stimulating environments — you may notice that she often struggles in social settings. As a parent, you likely struggle, too, as you witness her discomfort and wish you knew how best to help. Eric Fisher, PhD, a clinical psychologist and author of The Art of Empowered Parenting: The


Manual You Wish Your Kids Came With, urges you to be extremely slow and deliberate in your actions around your child. “Not only do shy kids need time to warm up, but it’s also best when they’re as prepared as possible for any situation,” explains Dr. Fisher, who lives in Lawrenceville, Ga. Although this approach may require more effort on your part, taking some extra steps may help ease your shy child out of her shell. When it comes to dealing with change, such as the start of a new school year, patience — and a lot of preparation — is especially important. One of the best ways to help decrease shyness, Dr. Fisher says, is to enroll your kid in sports. “Athletics offer interaction with other kids and can really boost self esteem,” he says. While team sports are a great option, Fisher specifically recommends those with one-on-one interaction, such as tennis, karate, swimming, and gymnastics, which allow kids to shine individually without being overwhelmed by having to compete for field time. If your child is not into sports, activities such as theater or dance offer routine structure and interaction with others. While shy kids may need a little more TLC than those who are not shy, you don’t want to become your child’s sidekick. You also should resist the urge to be his spokesperson when he is being particularly shy, as difficult as that may be. “This tends to send a message that you do not see him as capable of answering for himself,” says Dr. Vicki Folds, a Miami-based leading expert in early childhood development. Instead, she suggests saying, “He’ll answer when he’s ready.” This may be followed by an awkward silence, but at least your child will know that you believe in his ability to answer for himself, which may eventually lead to him believing in himself as well. Another great reason for helping your child come out of her shell sooner rather than later: While parents sometimes excuse a shy child’s behavior when she turns away or otherwise does not respond when someone speaks to them, this same behavior is considered impolite when exhibited by an adult. Helping her learn good manners and how to interact appropriately despite her shyness will go a long way toward helping her achieve life goals. Finally, professional knowledge certainly is helpful for learning about many areas of life, including shyness. But hearing from those who are in the trenches — in this case, kids who are shy and parents of shy kids — also can be helpful. THE WATER CRISIS: OUR DEPLETING GROUNDWATER One single drop of water contains, simply, the essence of our life. It is what sustains us, grows our plants, keeps us clean and healthy. Yet, that essence of life is becoming scarcer. We are beginning to take it for granted. The water crisis is becoming more of a reality with each passing day. California, for example, has been battling a four-year drought, relying on groundwater to quench residents’ thirst.

But groundwater is not a renewable resource. It comes from underground aquifers, which are a layer of water filled with sediment, and is removed using a well system. And because water found above ground is decreasing, the nation has begun tapping the aquifers, which are being depleted at an alarming rate. According to a 2014 National Geographic article, agriculture uses up more than 60 percent of the freshwater on the planet, and is the largest reason we’re seeing a decrease in groundwater. Yet, we also need the crops using the water to survive.

Rainfall hasn’t been a reliable source of water, with drought threatening much of the world. We aren’t seeing our natural sources of freshwater replenish fast enough. The human race is in a predicament with what sources we still have. While California, the farming industry, and the rest of the world struggles in their need for water, being conscientious of your water use can make a big difference. So, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and washing your dishes — our groundwater resources will thank you.

The Genetics of Cancer The chance of getting attacked and killed by a shark is one in 3,748,067. The chance of a fatal fireworks accident is one in 340,733. And the chance of dying from cancer is one in seven, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Many factors play into your individual chances, of course. If you

But there are some factors you do not have control over, such as inheriting mutated genes that will increase your risk for cancer. Fortunately, says Whitney Ford, a certified genetic counselor at St. Luke’s, “Only 10 percent of all cancers are hereditary. It’s very low.” It’s so low, in fact, that doctors don’t recommend genetic testing for the general population because they are not able to make a broad generalization. Most patients who opt for genetic testing have a family history of cancer.

WHAT GENETIC TESTING ENTAILS Doctors take a sample of blood or cheek cells to analyze an individual’s genetic material. In normal cells, certain genes help prevent cancer by making proteins that keep other cells from growing abnormally. Genetic testing allows doctors to see if those genes are mutated or damaged. The body has difficulty preventing cells from growing abnormally with damaged genes. So, for example, the breast and ovarian cancer genes are caused by mutations in one of two genes — BRCA1 or BRCA2. If the genes are damaged or mutated, the risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer substantially increase. Other cancers, such as prostate and pancreatic cancers, increase as well.

WHO SHOULD BE TESTED Ford recommends individuals come in for genetic counseling if they have the following criteria: • A known gene mutation in the family. • Multiple family members, on the maternal or paternal side, affected by the same or related cancer, such as breast or ovarian cancer. • An early-age cancer diagnosis (prior to age 50) • A triple negative breast cancer under the age of 60 • Patients with more than one cancer diagnosis or two different types of cancer • Patients with ovarian cancer • Patients with more than 10 colon polyps • An eastern European Jewish descent (Ashkenazi) plus one family member with cancer

TEST OUTCOMES If a genetic test is positive, it simply means you are at a greater risk for developing cancer. For women, the risk of getting breast cancer with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 abnormality can be as high as 80 percent.

A woman’s ovarian cancer risk can increase to 40 percent. Some individuals will never get cancer, even with a mutated gene. Options from that point will be up to you and your doctor. Some women choose to remove the breasts or ovaries. Other options include cancer screenings every six months and taking antiestrogen drugs to lower the risk of cancer developing. But even if your test results are negative, you are still at risk for developing cancer. If your family has a high incidence of a certain type of cancer and you test negative for BRCA1 and BRCA2, there are other genes doctors can check for mutations. But keep in mind that genetics are not the only indications.
