WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
GET YOUR REAR IN GEAR About 10 years ago, I got a life-changing call while sitting in the parking lot of Pottery Barn. My dad was on the other end of the call, and I knew immediately when he skipped his usual questions about the weather that this was not our normal chat. “I need to tell you they found some cancer in me. In my colon. I’m having surgery as soon as possible.” Boom. Life-changing. He had stage 4 colon cancer at age 55. I didn’t know it at the time, but his prognosis was not good. He did have surgery. And chemo. And radiation. After about 16 months of treatment, we were cautiously optimistic; he appeared to be cancer-free. He made some major lifestyle changes, including retiring and moving to Maui, and hasn’t looked back since. He is a survivor. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and so for my dad (and others), we tell our story a lot. If my dad had gotten his scheduled colonoscopy at age 50, he may have prevented the cancer entirely. This month I will also step up, at age 40, and get my first colonoscopy because of my family history. Good times. My friend Patsy is another survivor, though she is still in the midst of her battle. I will forever refer to her as a survivor though, because she never lets cancer beat her spirit even when it wreaks havoc on her body. Her journey has been different than my dad’s — diagnosed at age 34 with many ups and downs since — she is still very much fighting. And she has an army of support
8
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
to help her, which comes in handy because she has big dreams about educating people about their “pretty posteriors” as she fondly calls them. This month, she is in the District of Columbia, lobbying for better research and health policies as it relates to colon cancer. As she was prepping for this, I asked her what five things everyone should know about colon cancer. Here’s what she told me: 1. E DUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, LEARNING “When I was diagnosed at 34, I knew zero about colorectal cancer,” she says. “It is the No. 2 leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women. It is preventable through screening. There is a wide array of symptoms from minor bloating and gas to fatigue to blood in your stools. Had I known just a few of these facts, I might have been screened sooner, and been given a different prognosis.” 2. ADVOCACY If someone is affected by colorectal cancer, whether it’s the patient, caregivers, family, or friends, find ways to share facts about this disease. “Tell people about your fight. Knowledge is power. Hope and a positive outlook are contagious. We want to spread it all around! Last March, I dyed my bangs blue for CRC Awareness Month. That sparked lots of conversation, which led to me sharing my story as well as facts about CRC. I’ve even heard from a few people that they had a colonoscopy after hearing my story. That is a total full-circle moment!” 3. CHANGE POLICIES Many of the current health care and medical policies prevent people from being screened or treated in the best way possible.
4. KNOW THE DISEASE It is so important to learn all you can about what you’re up against. Realize treatment options, get second opinions, ask questions until you’ve exhausted the doctors, and then ask some more. 5. FIGHT “There is so much more to fighting cancer than medicine,” Patsy says. “I believe it is equal parts medicine, faith, state of mind, and personal health. Doctors and medicine can do good things for people. Caring for your body by eating healthy and exercising is something we all know is important, but don’t always do well. A positive mindset helps to sustain you even when you hear bad news or face setbacks. Faith is the rock these all stand on. It is hope when our situation seems hopeless and peace when our worlds are rocked to the core.” Check out our health section for more moving stories about colon cancer awareness. And ask your doctor about your colonoscopy! Do you know I scheduled the colonoscopy I’m having this month almost seven years ago? Yep. My doctor marked it down on my records so we wouldn’t forget. Now that’s proactive!

AROUND TOWN That conservation land is called the White Alloe Conservation Area. This urban forest boasts several trails of varying degrees of difficulty, and some can accommodate wheelchairs and strollers. At just under one mile, the Old Kate Trail is perfect for beginners and children. The mostly f lat trail offers a short and scenic stroll in the woods with views of creeks, wetlands, and the Riss Lake Dam. “Water f lows through the lower Sanctuary, with waterfalls and beautiful old growth timber,” says Patricia Harris, former Sanctuary director. “You may see deer, turkeys, muskrats, and, of course, songbirds or a barred owl.” If you’re looking for a bit of a challenge, she recommends the White Tail Trail, a 1.3-mile loop that travels up a steep hillside along a forested ravine.
SHAWNEE MISSION PARK 79th Street and Renner Road, Shawnee, KS This multiuse, 1,250-acre park includes a lake, ponds, forests, meadows, and both paved and unpaved trails for walking, hiking, and mountain biking. The Mill Creek Streamway Trail is an 11-mile asphalt pathway perfect for walking that takes you along the stream and through hillside oak-hickory forests and upland native prairies. You might catch glimpses of white-tailed deer, gray and fox squirrels, red and gray foxes, and wild turkeys. The park also features about 20 miles of trails for hiking and biking. Look for the orange loop if you’re an intermediary mountain-biker, or the violet loop for more advanced riders.

Craving some fun in the fresh air and sunshine? You’re in luck. Kansas City offers a rich network of paths that weave through beautiful wooded areas and peaceful prairie lands, all within a short drive of wherever you happen to live.

This 38-acre wildlife habitat has the largest stand of sugar maples west of the Mississippi River, and offers a peek at what North Kansas City looked like before it was platted. Several well-defined trails take you through this statedesignated natural area, says Larry Rizzo, a natural-history biologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation. “The trails are in good shape, and the area is known for its spring wildf lowers and fall colors,” he says.
THE PRAIRIE CENTER 135th Street and Prairie Center Road, Olathe, KS Just west of Olathe lies this 300-acre tallgrass preserve. According to environmental nonprofit organization Bridging the Gap, it is the metro area’s best opportunity for views of what a true prairie landscape would have looked like in presettlement times. Meander through native grasses, which, in the summer, grow as tall as your living room ceiling. The primary goal of the Prairie Center is to serve as a preserve for local f lora and fauna. Public access is restricted to trails
— but you’ll still see plenty of wildlife. The four miles of trails consist mostly of gentle hills, but there are a couple steep climbs depending on the path you take.
SWOPE PARK Oldham and Oakwood roads, Kansas City, MO For mountain-biking enthusiasts, Swope Park offers several trails made just for riders. “Just north of Oldham Road, this area features rock outcrops and creek crossings,” Rizzo says. The trails are 13.5 miles and growing — ongoing project phases will add mileage within the park and work to connect with the Blue River Parkway trail system in South Kansas City. For now, you can enjoy the intermediate Rancho D-LUX trail and the Wudchuk Run, a more advanced trail paralleling the limestone face that lines the entire property. Visit swopetrails.com for more information about the area. And if you’re hoping to experience the outdoors in a completely new way, consider getting a bird’s-eye view of the park. A treetop adventure course above the bike trails is opening next month. The seven-acre course — featuring high ropes, zip lines, and other obstacles — will offer a two- to three-hour trek through the forest canopy. The course is designed for a variety of skill levels. Head to goape.com/zip-line/swope-park for more info.

THINKING ABOUT SOLAR PANELS FOR YOUR HOME? Solar energy is becoming more and more of a commodity in recent years. According to Solar Energy Industries Association, about 4.6 millions homes have added solar panels to their homes. Alyson Pope, a Kansas City, Missouri, resident, is one of them. She bought her home last July, and for the past six months, she’s paid a total of a whopping $41 for her electric bill. Installing solar panels doesn’t only save money. According to Forbes, solar panels can decrease a household’s carbon footprint by an average of 35,180 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. This is equivalent to planting 88 trees every year to offset that carbon dioxide. Unfortunately, installing solar panels isn’t necessarily a simple process. If
you’re considering installing them, be sure to find a trustworthy contractor. And be willing to spend a good amount upfront. On average, solar panel installation can cost $17,000. However, with tax incentives and unbelievably low energy bills, solar panels will pay off over time. “I love my solar panels. They are very low maintenance,” Pope says. “I am starting to research what it would take to convert my gas heat to electric so I can remove my gas bill as well.” Whether you’re looking to install solar panels to reduce your carbon footprint, your energy bill or both, be sure to do tons of research to ensure you make the best decision for your home.

GET MORE OUT OF LIFE AT BLUE VALLEY SURGICAL ASSOCIATES BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Jeff Ervard
Over the past decade, Blue Valley Surgical Associates (BVSA) has been on a mission to provide top-quality surgical and postoperative care that is focused on patient success and satisfaction. A regional leader in bariatric surgery, BVSA continues to explore new ways of providing minimally invasive treatment options that allow patients to recover quickly and get more out of life. A number of surgical options are available to help qualified patients achieve their long-term weight loss goals when diet and exercise programs have been ineffective. All procedures are laparoscopic and most patients are able to go home the next day. Surgeries are performed at Blue Valley Hospital in

Overland Park, which opened in 2010. Because Blue Valley is a small specialty hospital with state-of-the-art equipment and a compassionate care team, patients receive the best surgical care, says Megan Rogers, chief business development officer at BVSA, as well as individualized attention and more personalized care. Postoperative visits take place at the patient’s local clinic. Rogers is especially proud of BVSA’s comprehensive treatment approach to patient care; particularly the support offered to bariatric patients. Rogers notes that, after surgery, many patients must change their entire lifestyle, eating different foods and becoming more conscious of how much they are exercising. “We provide education and support before and after surgery to help them be successful,” she says. “Having someone available to them locally is really important for their success.” Bobbie Bennett recently had a sleeve gastrectomy, a restrictive weight-loss surgical procedure that limits the amount of food you can eat at one time by permanently decreasing the size of your stomach. Bennett appreciates that BVSA gave her the necessary tools to be successful — including the before and after follow-up care with knowledgeable staff. “They offer
coaching and support when you hit a plateau, and helpful tips to keep you headed towards your goal,” she explains. “Almost like a battery, they give you a jump start. But what you do from there depends on you.” Bennett emphasizes that everyone is different, and stresses that this is a mental and physical challenge requiring hard work and perseverance. But she knows success is obtainable by staying focused and motivated, and by making better choices.
“My only regret is that I didn’t do this earlier in life. I have lots of energy, and my battery has new life and an extended warranty!” — Bobbie Bennett Although she says she still has a ways to go, Bennett has already lost 62 pounds. “If you want something bad enough and are determined and dedicated, you can obtain your goal,” she says. “My only regret is that I didn’t do this earlier in life. I have lots of energy, and my battery has new life and an extended warranty!”
additional neck surgeries and is excited about the possibility of being totally pain-free after suffering for more than 30 years. “Getting the professional help I needed at BVSA was the best decision I ever made,” he says. “I will be forever thankful to Dr. Reed for his help and surgical skill. I encourage anyone suffering from back pain to get a professional opinion of the available options to address and correct the sources of their pain.” Visit bluevalleysurgical.com or call 913.378.1365 for more information about BVSA or any of the procedures performed at Blue Valley Hospital.
BVSA mutlispecialty clinic exam room.
In an effort to better serve the needs of their patients, BVSA has several facilities in the Kansas City area in addition to its headquarters in Overland Park to accommodate its expanded services as a multispecialty practice offering pain management, spine, and orthopedic surgery. Doug Palzer, a retired veteran with substantial back problems, is not only a patient; he’s also the CEO of Blue Valley Hospital. Palzer injured his back on a bad parachute jump in 1981 while serving in the U.S. Army and has been going to pain doctors and clinics ever since. Prescriptions, pain injections, radiofrequency ablations (RFAs), pain needling, manipulation under anesthesia (MUA), and epidurals provided limited relief from his pain but never addressed the underlying cause. It wasn’t until two years ago that he found real relief. He received a referral for Dr. William Reed Jr., a BVSA spine surgeon, who determined the cause of Palzer’s pain was a severely deformed spinal column due to herniated and ruptured discs in his neck, upper back, and lower back. Dr. Reed suggested disc-replacement surgery on the discs that were not too badly damaged. This would allow Palzer to have full motion at each of the levels completed. After a second surgery in September 2015 to replace a disc in his neck, Palzer reports an 80 percent reduction in pain over the previous year.

When looking for the opinions of experts, what better way to get insight than to ask what they’d put in their own homes? Or what products are their most favorite to decorate with? Chances are, it’s a question that will come with far more options behind it, and way more passion. Which is exactly what we got. Check out what local designers and DIYers had to say about their favorite pieces, what made each stand out, and why they love to incorporate such items as often as possible. Lisa Davis / Interiors Nouveau “When designing for clients or looking for the latest trends, I gravitate toward furniture and accessories that are textural, patterned, unexpected, clean-lined, and glamorous. They don’t have to be all of these things at once. Furniture that nods to the past but is completed in modern fabrics and finishes can blend well with almost all design styles. “The Zanadoo Chandelier from Arteriors is reminiscent of the atomic lighting from the 1950s, but is more modern with the supplemental straight metal lines again in a brass finish. “I like mixing blocky, heavier furniture with more dainty pieces. This coffee table, the Stephane Ducatteau ‘Corner Table’ from Jay Jeffers. is sculptural and grounds a room with many chairs. “Mixing materials adds interest and design depth, for instance with this brass and lucite Jacques étagère by Jonathan Adler.
“Soft watercolor paintings — like ‘Treasured’ by Julia Contacessi in the 2016 Color of the Year Rose Quartz — tone down bold furniture and draperies. “The Amelie Pillow from Dering Hall is colorful and clean-lined; the geometric design adds interest.” Jessica Zimlich / 26 and Not Counting “My desk is one of my favorite pieces in my whole apartment. It’s a place I can sit down, feel inspired, and pour work into my passion project, 26andnotcounting.com. After I come home from my full-time job, there aren’t always a whole lot of creative juices left for my blog! Having a designated space and filling it with things I love definitely helps.”

We have been seeing gold everywhere these days, and this piece has just a touch of it, adding some class. They are also the perfect size to use just one, pair two sideby-side, or, for extra-long sofas, you can even use three. This coffee table is going to give you a slightly throwback feel while maintaining that modern edge that a lot of people crave.”

A Virtuous Vacation
There’s a new word floating around the travel industry — “voluntourism.” Voluntourism is a combination of volunteer work and short-term travel. It’s hard to define when this concept began, but it’s not a new concept. For years, churches and religious groups have sent people abroad for volunteer missionary work. The Peace Corps grew into a federal government agency devoted to world peace and friendship. Older adults, including the baby boomers, are attracted to vol-

Kansas City,” Lee says. “These type of vacations are mostly booked through the Internet. You need to watch out for terms such as nonrefundable — you should always be able to refund a trip. You should also always purchase traveler’s insurance, especially when it comes to your health and traveling outside the U.S.” That said, there are many organizations available that have a good track record. Here’s how to find one: • O pt for well-established organizations. Ask a lot of questions. Make sure the organization is providing a needed service to the community and not taking away jobs from locals.
Kansas City Wedding Flowers & Event Planning
• Talk with former volunteers over 50 years of age who have participated with the organization you are considering. Do not rely on pictures. The website and Facebook page is a good place to start looking for past volunteers. • Learn about the country you plan to visit. Research the history, culture, customs, and economic situations. • B e open about what you can and cannot do. In many cases, older adults are better placed as they have considerable life experience in various jobs. Ask about support and training offered.

VOLUNTEER TOURISM ORGANIZATIONS: SEMESTER AT SEA: This cruise-ship program is designed for undergraduate students to participate in service projects around the world with stops in 12 countries. Semester at Sea has a lifelong learning program, aimed for older, adult learners. Lifelong learners serve as mentors to undergraduates and participate in field excursions. A semester at sea takes approximately 100 days. AMERICAN HIKING SOCIETY: The American Hiking Society hosts a series of trail-building projects on America’s public lands. Projects can range in difficulty, since trips can involve backpacking and day hiking to rehabilitate trails. The cost with this program is generally lower due to staying domestic. EARTHWATCH INSTITUTE: The majority of fieldwork with this organization revolves around wildlife and ecosystems, climate change, archaeology, and ocean health. Volunteers are placed with scientists to help make hands-on contributions to research. GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS: Global Volunteers is a nonprofit international human and economic development organization. Volunteers work in conjunction with United Nations, UNICEF, and The World Food Program. More than 20 percent of the volunteers are ages 70 and older. Global Volunteers places older adults in services such as teaching English and planting community gardens.

Danielle Burgess was just 17 years old when she was first diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer.
Young-Onset Colon Cancer Is on the Rise Colon cancer patients and survivors. Who do you think of when you read those words? Do you think of males over the age of 50? The reality is that not only is colon cancer as common among women as men, but more people under the age of 50 than ever before are being diagnosed with it. March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer diagnosed in both men and women, and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined, after lung cancer. Before you panic, Danielle Burgess, director of communications for Fight Colorectal

Cancer and local colon cancer survivor, has some good news to share about the disease. “It’s preventable — one of the few cancers you can stop before it starts,” she says. Burgess noticed blood in her stool, alerted her doctor, and was thrust into the cancer fight at an early age. She was just 17 years old when she was first diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer, and she was diagnosed again at age 25. She blogged about her battle with cancer at semicolonstories.com.
rectum — so doctors can stop it before it even starts by removing the polyp during a screening.
Colon cancer is one of the easiest cancers to detect, which is why screening and prevention are so important. Colon cancer almost always starts with a polyp — a small growth on the lining of the colon or
Colorectal surgeon Benyamine Mizrahi says there is a lower threshold to screen patients these days, so doctors are catching things earlier. “It used to be unheard of to tell a 20-year-old with bleeding, ‘You need to get
No one knows exactly why young-onset colon cancer rates are increasing. According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, 15,000 people under age 50 are diagnosed with colon cancer every year. Rates for those over the age of 50 actually continue to decline, thanks in part to improvements in screening.
a colonoscopy,’” he says. “We used to say, ‘It’s just hemorrhoids.’ Now we’re screening better, so if we find a problem, we can deal with it.”
polyps removed, because it can impact your risk — and it might even save your life.”
Routine screening is historically not recommended for those under the age of 50. Part of the reason for this is that doctors used to think that polyps took up to 10 years to turn into cancer, but they have found that this is not always the case. “The tumor pathology that we’re seeing is different in everyone,” Dr. Mizrahi says. “Some tend to be more aggressive and form cancer sooner.”
Warning signs for colon cancer can be nonspecific. “It can go anywhere from having no signs to having blatant signs like constipation, bowel habit changes, or rectal bleeding,” Dr. Mizrahi says. “It can be as simple as weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.” Many times, these symptoms can also be related to other conditions, but if you have any of these symptoms, be sure to consult a physician.
The causes of colon cancer range from older age and a family history of cancer or polyps to physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol use, obesity, changes in certain genes, and diets high in red and processed meats. Those with a personal history of Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis are also at a higher risk of developing colon cancer.
Those with increased or high risk of colon cancer should begin screening before age 50. As long as people of average risk (those without a family history or personal history of cancer, polyps, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn’s disease) have negative test results from a colonoscopy, the ACS recommends getting a repeat test done every 10 years.
Burgess stresses the importance of finding out your family history, even for those who are younger than the typical screening age. “Ask your grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents, siblings, etc. about their medical history. It might be weird, but do it,” she says. “You need to know if colon cancer runs in your family, or even if anyone has had
Even though colon cancer can be fatal, it is also highly preventable, treatable, and beatable. Thanks to improvements in prevention, early detection, and treatment, more than a million Americans now call themselves colon-cancer survivors.

FINANCE
5 WAYS TO MAKE MONEY NOW There’s no better time than after filing taxes to take a close look at your finances and make headway toward being more financially fit and organized. If you’re not already doing these, you can’t afford to put off these simple money moves any longer.
1. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT Spring cleaning is not just for shining windows and shampooing carpet. Set aside some time to clean up your financial files too. Find your own system for organizing your bills and financial papers. Do you prefer an accordion file and binders or an all-electronic system? You be the judge of what your perfect organizing system may be; but clean up your act and make an effort to keep it organized. Shred and recycle papers you don’t need, and stay on top of de-cluttering.
2. SPEND MORE WISELY It takes time and effort to form new habits. Don’t set yourself up for failure by making extreme changes in your spending habits (if you don’t have to), but make a conscious effort to tweak the way you spend your money a little bit at a time. For example, try to give up just one thing you don’t need. Maybe it’s the premium cable channels, a club membership no one is using, or a lesson your kids wouldn’t miss. Or, maybe it’s the choice not to buy the concert tickets or the steak dinner, yet opt for a fun, more frugal outing. Giving up one thing is not about depriving yourself, it’s about making a choice to keep
34

more cash in your pocket that you’ll use in a different way. Or, avoid rash purchases. Instead, be conscious about your spending by asking yourself a few simple questions when you shop: Why do I need this? How often or for how long will I be able to use it? Can I find it at a better price? Would I rather have something else?
3. LOSE THE DEBT If you have debt hanging over your head, there’s no time like the present to tackle paying it off. The snowball method, made popular by personal finance guru Dave Ramsey, has been a successful debt-payoff approach for many people. The snowball focuses on paying off debts smallest to largest as a way of achieving “quick wins” that help build motivation and modify behavior, as well as focusing the intensity of paying off one debt at a time. If you prefer another approach, so be it. The key is not to fall back into the habit of living outside your means so debt doesn’t happen again. Even if you have a long way to go before you become debt-free, start with baby steps and a game plan. You’ll sleep better at night and free up new opportunities once this burden is lifted.
4. SAVE MORE Hand-in-hand with forming good habits so you don’t fall into debt, focus on stashing cash for rainy days — and big purchases you hope to make (the fun part of saving!). Life can be hectic and full of unexpected
expenses, so saving more may seem daunting. But every little bit adds up over time. Any time you come across unexpected cash, such as a tax refund, resist the temptation to spend it all and instead save at least a portion of it. This goes for any bonus, rebate, gift, garage sale earnings, and the little bit you regularly save by spending more consciously. Consider automatically putting a portion of your paycheck into a savings account if that makes it easier for you. A doable goal for many people is to save $170 per month, for example, which will add up to $2,040 by this time next year — a decent stash of cash to have available for unexpected expenses.
5. INVEST IN YOUR (FUTURE) SELF When is the last time you evaluated your 401(k) or IRA allocation? And are you investing as much as you can into your retirement account? Many Americans will not have enough to live on when they retire. Don’t be one of them. If you aren’t sure how to allocate your retirement fund, take advantage of any advice your employer or 401(k) provider may offer, talk with an outside financial advisor, or use a low-cost “robo-advisor” service, such as the local firm blooom.com, that will do the work for you. Spending just a small amount of time making some wise decisions now can equate to thousands (even hundreds of thousands) of dollars more for future-you to live on. You’ll thank yourself later.

IN FOCUS while clearing his own trail as well. Medicine has been in Dr. Jones’s family for several generations. His maternal grandfather, who passed away before Dr. Jones was born, lived an inspiring life. He worked his way through medical school here in Kansas City, finished first in his class, and practiced medicine despite the racism of the early 20th century preventing him from gaining hospital admission privileges. Dr. Jones’s father continued the legacy by also practicing medicine, working in Kansas City for 50 years. Dr. Jones’ older brother even took up medicine by becoming an ER doctor. All these influences inspired Dr. Jones to devote his life to the practice of medicine. Instead of taking the same path as his father, though, and going into general surgery, he decided to set out on a new course and enter the field of pain management. “I enjoy the blend of procedural intervention, patient contact, as well as the ability to help people experiencing pain,” he explains. “I feel this is a great way to make a positive difference in many lives.” The field of pain management focuses on easing the suffering of patients and helping them improve their overall quality of life. ogy available for his patients. One of these new and innovative approaches is the spinal cord stimulator implant. This technology uses electrical impulses to relieve pain. These electrical impulses intercept pain signals being sent to the brain. A “lead” of insulated wire is inserted through an epidural needle into the spine, where electrical pulses are emitted that block the pain signals.
“When I saw Dr. Jones, I could hardly walk or sleep. I was getting about two hours of sleep per night. So far, the spinal cord stimulator has been great. When I turn on my stimulator, the pain goes away.” — Charles Moore “I enjoy the blend of procedural intervention, patient contact, as well as the ability to help people experiencing pain,” says Dr. Jones. “I feel this is a great way to make a positive difference in many lives.”
Charles Moore is one of Dr. Jones’s patients who received the spinal cord stimulator implant. He says he spoke with a couple other surgeons about the chronic pain in his back. They recommended he receive about 20 pins and rods. Unsatisfied with that solution, he spoke with Dr. Jones, who recommended he try the spinal cord stimulator implant. Now, he can’t say enough good things about the procedure. Before he received the implant, his pain was unbearable. “When I saw Dr. Jones, I could hardly walk or sleep,” he shares. “I was getting about two hours of sleep per night. So far, the spinal cord stimulator has been great. When I turn on my stimulator, the pain goes away. It got my pain down from a 10 to a four.” Moore also appreciates Dr. Jones’ personable and thorough approach. “Dr. Jones was very informative by walking me through the

‘THE TALK’: HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KID ABOUT CHANGING BODIES AND SEXUALITY If you grew up in the ’80s, you will probably remember the book, “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.” Having a mom who never really sat down to give me “the talk,” this was my reference book for puberty. Looking back, it was a cute book that did cover some important topics. But it didn’t answer the big questions I had.
38
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
I’m pretty sure my mom was hoping school would cover those tough questions. And they certainly did — but it was uncomfortable. Sitting there with your peers, giggling nervously as the teachers talked about sanitary napkins and body odor. After watching an awkward video, I was sent home with a pamphlet that only scratched the surface when it comes to all I needed to know about my body and sexuality. Most of what I learned came from girlfriends with older sisters! Today, we live in a society in which sexuality is everywhere. You can’t watch a Royals game on TV without a Viagra ad coming on. If that doesn’t spark a conversation with your curious kid, I don’t know what will! With our kids being exposed to so much through the media, we need to be better prepared to talk to our kids and at an earlier age. Enter: Coco McAtee (cocomcatee.com), a health professional and
DENTISTRY THAT WILL MAKE KIDS a licensed clinical social worker with more than two decades of experience teaching kids and parents about sexuality. “Focusing on the good aspects of sexuality and not just the negative is necessary if we are to protect our kids,” she says. McAtee began her career dealing with child abuse and neglect. She began teaching workshops on healthy sexual development in kids for early childhood professionals in 1992, and the rest is history. One of my big questions for her is how the media is affecting our children. With all of the social media channels out there, our kids have access to so much with just the touch of a finger. “We are all bombarded by countless images and messages about bodies and relationships,” McAtee explains. “At least as an adult, we might have some filter that distinguishes good from bad. Kids are truly vulnerable because they are still developing their ideas, and if no one helps them make sense of what they see and hear, they can buy into dangerous notions. Parents need to know they can’t possibly filter everything so they must put what filters they can on screens. But keep talking about what they see and hear.” Because our kids are hearing and seeing things earlier, we need to start the conversation at an earlier age. McAtee’s mottos are: “Tell the truth about our bodies” and “adopt the attitude that this is not a one-time talk but an on-going conversation.” She suggests we begin teaching real names for all body parts when kids are young.

She also says it is best to begin addressing body changes well before your kid goes through it so he or she is not afraid or caught off guard. Puberty can begin as early as 8 for girls and 10 or 11 for some boys. “You can begin talking to them in grade school: third or fourth grade about what the changes of puberty are and why the body changes.” The best times to talk to your kid is when you know you’ll have a captive audience — for example, in the car. Turn off the radio and ensure mobile devices are put away. This gives you time to share info and your values. Try not to bring up the topic at the dinner table or in front of siblings. To start the conversation, McAtee suggests finding a song, magazine article, or advertisement to discuss and share ideas about bodies, relationships, and taking care of oneself. Another way to get the conversation going is to get a book, such as the “The Care & Keeping of You” in the American Girl series, or the “Boy’s Body Book.” Read them first yourself, so that you can come up with questions or be prepared for any questions your kid may have. And when it comes to who should do the talking, McAtee says both parents can talk about puberty with their son or daughter. Girls will need details on menstruation and ovulation; boys on erections, ejaculations, and wet dreams. “Parents don’t need to be experts,” McAtee says. “If a child asks a questions you don’t know, say so and go look it up together.”

MIND & BODY
: r e t t a M r Mind Oveeating Procrastination 5 Tips for B
Do you leave things until the last minute? Do you need the stress of a deadline to give you the adrenaline push to take action? Does the feeling of being overwhelmed paralyze you? It’s OK; many people fight these challenges on a daily basis. Maybe you simply have a positive outlook on life that can be — at times — your own worst enemy. You think you can get more done in the amount of time you actually have. When reality sets in, you still try to cram every last second of your time to finish your project, which, in turn, can cause a great deal more stress.
40
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
But, acknowledging that you have a problem is the first step! Just take one step at a time.
TIPS FOR BUSTING PROCRASTINATION 1. Determine why you are procrastinating. There can be many reasons for procrastinating — the task is dull, large, and/or overwhelming. It could be a fear of failure, lack of motivation, too many distractions, poor time-management skills, forgetfulness, or inability to concentrate. Once you identify why you’re dragging your feet, you will be better able to control and manage it.
2. Make tasks more manageable and set realistic goals. If your tasks seem insurmountable, you are less likely to move forward in accomplishing it. Break tasks up in smaller minijobs. If you detest cleaning the house, why not try starting with just one room or task. For example, you can start with a closet and work your way from there — or not. Make the job more fun by listening to your favorite music. You can even motivate yourself with a little reward for getting the job done. It’s OK if you stop after finishing the closet. At least you accomplished one thing! Pat yourself on the back. Just be realistic about what you can get done and start chiseling away toward your end goal.

3. Examine your mental process.
“If you know that it takes 45 minutes to get ready and arrive at a destination, ask yourself why you would spend 30 minutes doing something else and then try to get ready and get to your destination in 15 minutes,” Dr. Phil says. “You’re not late at 11. If you have to be somewhere at 11 and it takes 30 minutes to get there, you’re late at 10:30 if you’re still at home.” If you are always late, take a good look in the mirror — it is completely inconsiderate of others to always be running behind. Dr. Phil even goes so far as to call it arrogant behavior. Ouch! That hurts. But taking responsibility for how your actions can affect others is simply called being a grown-up.
4. Prioritize.
Determine what things are important to you. Cut out activities that are not necessary or are big time-killers so you can focus on the things you must and should get done first. It’s OK to say “no.” Sometimes we are faced with more than one worthwhile activity or opportunity. Choose one and do it well, rather than spreading yourself thin. You can’t please everyone all the time.

5. Track your progress.
Keep a record of how you are doing, or make a list of the things you need to get done and check them off as you go. Physically seeing that you are completing tasks — whether at work or home — is just good mental mojo. This will keep you motivated and encouraged to make more positive changes in your life.

The newest innovations are coming out of Europe, says Susan Haas, co-owner of Overland Park-based Awnings by Haas. They now last 15 to 20 years with little to no maintenance. Each retractable awning and solar shade is made to your exact specifications. With fabrics made specifically for outdoor placement, you can be sure the awnings and solar shades will protect you and your furniture from damaging UV rays while enhancing the function of your home. “If you stop the sun before it comes through the glass, like with an awning or solar shade, it is three times more effective than using interior window treatments,” she says. Susan and Jim Haas has been in the awning and solar shade business for more than 10 years.
RETRACTABLE AWNINGS AND SOLAR SHADES ADD OUTDOOR ROOM AND COMFORT BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH
Solar shades are made from a fabric that repels the sun’s rays and heat gain, stops the glare on televisions and computers, and protects valuable home furnishings, Haas says. And they come in various colors that will complement your home. Retractable awnings and solar shades installed in an outdoor area also will shield you from cold, rain, wind, snow, and bugs.

tected from the sun and other elements, she says. The couple has been in the awning and solar shade business for more than 10 years. Jim, who specializes in motorization, also brings 30 years of experience as a homebuilder, while Susan brings 30 years of design experience. The two give this added experience to helping clients get what they need and want. Homeowner Jessica Henson had solar screens installed on her Leawood home’s porch last summer. “The shades keep out much of the rain, snow, and sun,” she says. “We feel like we now have an additional living area in our home.” Henson had learned of Awnings by Haas by word of mouth. “Susan’s design expertise coupled with Jim’s installation expertise made them a no-brainer,” she explains. “They seem to have lots of experience in a fairly niche market.”
able room even in cold weather. Schell is looking forward to using the solar shades year-round, however. “In the summer with the sun bearing down, it will be great to keep the rays out,” she says.

Plus, Henson adds, “the service was extremely quick.” The fast turnaround time is one of the reasons Katie Schell raves about Awnings by Haas. “I had an outrageous request to have my solar shades installed in a short timeframe just before Thanksgiving,” she shares. “They got a rush shipment and, even with the weather challenges, got it done in no time.”

Pavlova:
A Dessert Near & Dear to My Heart
44
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
My junior year in college I did a semester abroad in New Zealand. Josephine, my “Kiwi” flat mate and studying ballerina, made a dessert for us called Pavlova, a native New Zealand dessert named after Russian prima ballerina Anna Pavlova who toured Australia and New Zealand in 1926. I remember being amazed by its fluffy sweetness. I had to bring it home with me to share.
Pavlova With Lemon Curd and Berries Serves 6 to 8
Ingredients For meringue 1 cup superfine granulated sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 3 large egg whites that have been at room tem perature for at 30 minutes 3 tablespoons cold water 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
For filling 2/3 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 1/2 stick unsalted butter 3 large egg yolks 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest 1 cup heavy cream 4 cups mixed berries
Directions Preheat the oven to 300°F with the rack in the middle. Trace an approximately 6- to 8-inch circle on a sheet of parchment paper. Turn the parchment over and put it on a baking sheet. Whisk together superfine sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Place the egg whites and a pinch of salt in a clean dry bowl. Beat with an electric mixer at medium speed until soft peaks form. Add water (whites will loosen) and beat until whites again hold soft peaks. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat in the sugar mixture 1 tablespoon at a time. After all the sugar has been added, beat 1 minute more. Add the vinegar and beat at high speed until meringue is glossy and holds stiff peaks, about 5 minutes (longer if using hand-held mixer). Gently spread meringue inside the circle on the parchment, making the edge of the meringue slightly higher than in the center (the “crater” is for the curd and fruit). Bake until the meringue is pale golden and has a crust, about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your oven (inside should still be marshmallow-like). Note that opening your oven door can cause the Pavlova to fall. Use the oven light to check on it if possible or wait until the 45-minute mark to check on it. While the meringue bakes, make the lemon curd. (Trader Joe’s makes a great lemon curd if you want to skip this step.) Stir together the
sugar, cornstarch, and salt in a heavy saucepan, then add lemon juice and the butter. Bring this to a simmer over medium-high heat, whisking, then continue to simmer, whisking constantly for 1 minute. Lightly beat the yolks in a small bowl and whisk in 1/4 cup of the lemon mixture, then whisk the yolks and lemon into the remaining lemon mixture in the saucepan. Reduce heat to low and cook, whisking constantly, until curd is thickened, about 2 minutes (do not let it boil). Transfer the curd to a bowl and stir in the zest. Chill, surface covered with parchment, until cool, about 1-1/2 hours. After meringue is done, turn off the oven and prop open the door slightly with a wooden spoon. Cool the meringue in the oven for 1 hour. To assemble the Pavlova, beat heavy cream until it just holds stiff peaks, then fold 1/4 cup beaten cream into the curd to lighten. Spoon the lemon curd into the meringue and mound the berries on top. Serve the remaining whipped cream on the side.
Cooks’ notes: • For best results, keep the oven door closed as much as possible during baking. • Meringue can be made 2 days ahead and frozen, wrapped well in plastic. Thaw before serving. • Curd can be made 2 days ahead and chilled.
Farm-raised and city-approved, Samantha Levi grabs inventive and adventurous style when cooking up the goods. A little of this, a little of that. She believes it’s about the art, not the science. And she loves putting her own flair on any recipe that crosses her path.

FIND THE BEST SWIMWEAR FOR YOUR FIGURE Spring Break is upon us, which also means it is time to swimsuit shop. Nani Nalu has been fitting women of all shapes and sizes for more than 10 years. The shop’s expertly trained and knowledgeable staff works with you to determine the best suit for your body, age, and lifestyle. 1. T he monokini is getting a lot of press lately — but it’s actually a hard style to wear! It sometimes can look awkward or figure-widening. To get a similar look, Nani Nalu owner Jennifer Cermak recommends one-piece suits with cutouts. 2. I f you have a bikini body but you want a more age-appropriate look, go for classic styles with sophisticated elegance. This season, you will find mini ruffles, lattice edging, and French lace in both swimwear and coverups. 3. S exy can still be sophisticated when done right! Choose what you want to accent, such as your full cleavage or your great legs. Cermak says skimpy is only done right with a nonpinching bottom. 4. H igh-waist suits is a tricky trend, but they can be great for covering stretch marks! However, many of these styles pinch at the waist, so if you are bigger around your middle, this may not be the best style for you.

THINGS YOUR NAILS SAY
about your health 1
If they break, peel, or split easily ...
2
If nails have a yellow tinge …
3
Brittle nails might just be a side effect of aging. It also could mean you may need to take a break from manicures for a while — over processing your nails can make them weaker. Or, you might be deficient in vitamins A, C, or biotin.
A change in nail color can be caused by several things: nail fungus, psoriasis, stains from smoking, or a reaction from dark nail polish. Soak your nails in denture cleaner to remove stains. If the yellowing persists or is accompanied by pain, it could be a fungal infection. Go see your doctor.
If you see small white dots … Not usually a big deal. It could be from some type of trauma to your nail. They should grow out. But if they don’t, you should see a dermatologist — it could be a fungal infection.
4
If you notice horizontal depressions …
5
If you see dark, vertical lines …
6
If your nails look scooped out, like a spoon …
7
If you feel vertical bumps that look like candlewax drippings ...
Again, it might be from trauma. Slam your finger in a car door recently? But if you haven’t injured yourself, the depressions could be a sign of something more serious, such as uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory diseases, or any illness associated with a high fever.
These are common in dark-skinned people. But a single new or changing band could be skin cancer. Keep an eye on the band. If it continues to change, see a dermatologist asap.
This could mean you’re iron-deficient. In some cases, spoon nails can be a sign of heart disease or hypothyroidism.
It probably is nail beading, which is brought on by hormonal changes, thyroid issues, stress, or diabetes.
