AROUND TOWN

SUSTAINABLE EATING ACROSS KANSAS CITY BY BRIDGET MASON HESS

Farmers markets, farm-to-table restaurants, organic local produce, and community-supported agriculture (CSAs) have been all the rage in recent years. Sustainable eating isn’t just fashionable — it is good for our bodies, the environment, and the local economy. Area philanthropists also are passionate about what the sustainable eating movement can do to improve lives across Kansas City.

WHAT MAKES FOOD SUSTAINABLE? The terms “local” and “sustainable” often are used interchangeably these days to define any food that was grown or produced nearby using environmentally friendly and socially responsible methods. However, the two terms don’t necessarily mean the same thing. Sustainable food often is locally grown or raised, yet it’s best not to assume that every food produced in close proximity is healthful, fresh, and made using environmentally friendly practices.

WHY EAT LOCAL? There are many good reasons to eat local. First and foremost, it tastes good. This is likely because locally grown food is often more fresh and healthful. Why? First, it got to your plate faster and, second, it is probably more flavorful and nutritious because it was raised without the use of chemicals. Eating local also earns points for being green. That is, when your food doesn’t have to travel far and wasn’t produced using industrial farming techniques, it makes less of an environmental impact. (Industrial food-production techniques are often big offenders of wrecking havoc on the environment.) Finally, eating local can boost our hometown economy by supporting area farmers and businesses, and helping to create area jobs.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE Organizations such as Cultivate Kansas City, the Giving Grove, and KC Healthy Kids are all working hard to make a difference in Kansas City by advocating for local food systems. The Giving Grove, for example, is not only advocating for healthful, locally grown food, but it is working to help remedy “food insecurity” for about 250,000 Kansas Citians who lack adequate access to nutritious food. In the past two years, the Giving Grove has planted

APP OF THE MONTH ESCAPE FROM ZOMBIES AND GET YOUR RUN ON The gist: If you joke about running only if someone is chasing you, this

might just be the app that motivates you to get moving. Zombies, Run! is an immersive running game and audio adventure. Pop in your headphones to hear the story of how Runner Five — that’s you — helps the Abel Township gather supplies and aids others trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. The app delivers the story through voice recordings, and when you finish your run, jog, or walk, you can use the supplies you collected to build and grow your base. When listening to the story, you can opt to participate in a “zombie chase” (interval training), which requires you to run faster for a short time or be caught by zombies and lose your supplies. The app also lets you listen to your own music playlist during the story.

The cons: It costs $3.99 for both iOS and Android, and if you go

through all the free missions, you must buy more. You must provide your own music if you want that integrated (meaning you can’t stream from Pandora or Spotify), but the app works with a small selection of players. The Android Music app is not one of them — you will likely have to download another one. Finally, the app doesn’t include analytics. For example, it won’t tell you how many calories you’ve burned during a workout.

IN FOCUS Contemporary awnings are made from synthetic fabrics like acrylic and polyvinyl laminates that are water-repellent and treated to resist mildew and fading. Homeowners now even have the option of adding motorized retractable awnings to windows and sliding glass doors. Other options include retractable vertical solar shades and shelters. Solar shades have many useful applications, such as over windows, porch enclosures, and pergolas. The newest innovations are coming out of Europe, says Susan Haas, co-owner of Overland Park-based Awnings by Haas. They now last 15 to 20 years with little to no maintenance. Each retractable awning and solar shade is made to your exact specifications. With fabrics made specifically for outdoor placement, you can be sure the awnings and solar shades will protect you and your furniture from damaging UV rays while enhancing the function of your home. “If you stop the sun before it comes through the glass, like with an awning or solar shade, it is three times more effective than using interior window treatments,” Haas says.

ping up on houses all over the metro. This new, innovative awning is your nswer to having the outdoor room you’ve always dreamed about.

For example, Phifer SheerWeave is the fabric Awnings by Haas uses for all clients who install solar shades. “Solar shades are made from a fabric that repels the sun’s rays and heat gain, stops the glare on televisions and computers, and protects valuable home furnishings,” she shares. “They come in various colors to complement colors of the home.” Other benefits to installing retractable awnings and solar shades, she says, includes adding an outdoor room with shelter that will shield you from cold, rain, wind, snow, and bugs. Susan and her husband, Jim, run the shade and shelter design business together. Awnings by Haas provides the best solution for making your home or business more comfortable

and protected from the sun and other elements, she says. The couple has been in the awning and solar shade business for 10 years. Jim, who specializes in motorization, also brings 30 years of experience as a homebuilder, while Susan brings 30 years of design experience. The couple gives this added experience to helping clients get what they need and want. Homeowner Tom Shearon purchased a retractable awning from Awnings by Haas to make his backyard feel more homey. “It has a good feel, once it’s extended out,” he says. “It feels like an enclosed room, but you get the feeling of being outdoors, with added protection.” Plus, he adds, Susan and Jim are trustworthy and provide great customer service. “I felt like they were making decisions with my best interest in mind,” he says. Another satisfied Awnings by Haas customers is Gary Brandt, of Parkville. He purchased motorized moveable solar shades for his screened-in porch in November. “I originally just wanted to cut down on the summer sunlight, since our backyard faces west,” he explains. The sun and glare reduction is an obvious benefit, but what has impressed him the most is the shades’ ability to hold in the heat on the deck, making it a usable room in cold weather, with no need for jackets.

years. In March 2012, the company moved to its current Overland Park location, which is twice the size of its previous space. The PDR process is much less expensive than traditional bodywork because it eliminates the need for ordering new car panels. It also retains the factory paint. damaged shape without affecting or harming the factory-painted finish on the vehicle.

At Dr. Dent, Kansas City’s paintless dent repair specialists, cars are restored to like-new conditions in a matter of minutes rather than days, and at a fraction of the cost when compared to the older, more time-consuming method. Like it or not, scratches, door dings, shopping cart accidents, hail, and other types of damage are all too common occurrences for car owners. Fortunately, Dr. Dent specializes in restoring vehicles to like-new conditions using the paintless dent-removal (PDR) process, the art of repairing minor dents and door dings without doing expensive and time-consuming bodywork. One of the original paintless dent-repair companies, Dr. Dent is a local business that has been employee-owned-and operated for 25

28

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

When done properly by one of Dr. Dent’s skilled technicians, the final outcomes obtained using the PDR process are usually undetectable to anyone with the possible exception of some extreme cases. In those cases, the area that was damaged may have a slight “wave,” which is nearly invisible to the untrained eye. Another technique also used by the specialists at Dr. Dent is called glue-pulling. This method allows the technicians to remove dents that previously would have been unreachable due to the car’s frame or bracing. More detailed information about each of these processes can be found at drdentkc.com. Paintless dent repair for a single dent usually takes about an hour, whereas the repair process for vehicles with hail damage or multiple

dents may take a few days. For customers who choose to wait on-site while their cars are being repaired, Dr. Dent’s spacious and comfortable lobby offers a variety of magazines and other amenities such as f lat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary beverages, including water, soft drinks, coffee, and other hot drinks.

The paintless dent-removal process is much less expensive than traditional bodywork because it eliminates the need for ordering new car panels. In addition to the well-appointed lobby area, a large window between the lobby and the repair shop enables customers to keep an eye on their car while it is being repaired. “People want to know what you’re doing with their car when you take it away from them,” explains

Owner Mike Logan repairs a dent.

Office Manager Karen Green. “This way, they can see exactly what’s going on.” Dr. Dent also is one of the few shops able to handle minor paint work in-house, which is perfect for when your car gets scratched or dinged in a parking lot. “We do specialize in paintless dent repair, but if needed, touch-ups and painting are also available on-site,” Green says.

The company does work with insurance companies, although some policies may not cover minor dents and door dings. These types of damage may be reviewed on a per-incident basis, and a deductible may apply for each dent if they did not occur at the same time. Any collision damage as well as damage from hail — one of Dr. Dent’s specialties — is usually covered under full-coverage insurance policies. Along with servicing local residents, several dealerships and body shops now partner with Dr. Dent for on-site repair work thanks to the company’s reputation for excellent service and high-quality standards. For this reason, Green recommends you make an appointment.

HOME

Home Colors: The Ins and the Trends

BY BETHANEY WALLACE

Paint color really can say it all. It can grab attention — in all the right or wrong ways — and it can make or break décor in any room of the house. And once painting is finished, it can be quite an ordeal to change it up. No surprise, then, that so many people feel stressed when choosing wall colors. So how do you choose the best fit? With an eye for detail … or outside help.

30

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Color consultant Diane Stewart says choosing is as simple as looking at current décor and finding a mix that works. But that’s where a professional can really help. After you’ve pointed out your favorite belongings, she helps you determine the solution that best compliments those items. “In general, people keep the stuff they have and just want to paint around it,” says Stewart, founder of Color Sense Consulting. Completely redecorating a home — new knickknacks, wall décor, etc. — calls for a considerable budget. Adding a fresh coat of paint instead is a much more wallet-friendly option. But, Stewart stresses, “it has to be harmonious of what’s there.” As for trends, Stewart says each colorconsulting venture is a custom experience. But underlying tones often stay similar, she shares, such as earthy or autumn palates. This has shifted, albeit slightly, over the last few years from beige and browns. More vibrant colors, such as teals and reds, are a rare request, Stewart says. And although

she says she never tries to talk her clients into (or out of) a certain color, she instead suggests certain shades for different rooms. For instance, bright hues work best in smaller rooms with less clutter, such as a bathroom, office, or guest room. Calmer tones are better for larger, busier spaces, such as the kitchen or living room. THE OUTER SHELL Exterior home colors have gone darker in the last few years, says Tommy Nigro, owner of Nigro Painting Specialists. He and his team of painters custom coat homes in the KC area, while also providing repair services. “Dark earthy tones are very popular,” Nigro explains. “Colors that look like dirt. That doesn’t sound attractive, but really rich browns have made a comeback.” He says these hues are his personal favorite as well. They add a classy, universal look to all styles of homes without being too trendy. In years prior, Nigro says homeowners opted for light colors for the house and dark trim. That’s since reversed. Most popular today, he

says, are dark browns with light-colored trim, which he has seen throughout the metro area. However, homeowners tend to choose lighter colors, like beige, when they are looking to sell their home, Nigro notes. “I think they just feel comfortable and safe [with light colors].” This also allows new buyers to more easily update to their preference, he adds. One drawback of a darker exterior color is that you will have to paint your home more often. Because it attracts more UV light, Nigro says, a dark home typically has 75 percent of the lifespan of a lighter color paint. Finally, it is important to note that many homeowner’s associations have regulations concerning house colors. Many associations require that you seek approval before painting your home, which means bright or “loud” colors might not get the pass. Paint colors are one of the first things you notice about any home. Follow these experts’ advice — while following your own taste — to find the best possible home décor outcome.

BEAUTY

Skin Myths Debunked BY MELANIE KNOPKE

There are many “old wives’ tales” about skincare and cosmetics. With all of our advances in technology, we have learned so much about products and the effect they have on our skin. Here are some popular myths debunked by three Kansas City experts.

32

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Myth: Acne goes away after you enter adulthood. Fact:

“The root cause of acne is the same no matter the age,” says Kylie Mullinix, a licensed aesthetician at Skinology Skincare (skinologyskincare-llc. com) in Overland Park. “Acne is twofold. It is caused by excessive oil from the sebaceous glands that mix with dead skin, and debris that traps the anaerobic P. acne bacteria underneath, causing breakouts.” Adult acne can continue in to one’s 20s, 30s, and 40s; yet the ratio of females vs. males suffering acne issues decreases with age. Roughly, by mid-30s, females are 50 percent more likely to still be suffering from adult acne compared to males, thus “males do tend to outgrow acne,” Mullinix says. Adult acne is more influenced by bad cosmetics, sun damage, slowing of the cellular metabolism, diet, smoking, medications, lifestyle, and stress. Not to mention hormonal fluctuations from birth control, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause. No wonder women are 50 percent more likely to suffer from acne as adults than men.

Myth: You only need to wear sunscreen during the summer. Fact: “Ninety percent of

ultraviolet rays are present all year and in all climates,” says Dr. Meggan Newland, a dermatologist at St. Luke’s (saintlukeshealthsystem.org/doctor/meggan-r-newland-md). “These rays are the same ones that go right through your windshield. You definitely should wear an SPF 30 every day.” She recommends Image Skincare Prevention+ Daily Hydrating Moisturizer SPF 30 for dry skin, EltaMD SPF 40

Daily Moisturizer for oily skin, and Cetaphil Dermacontrol Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 for oily, acne-prone skin.

Myth: Everyone needs to use toner in a good skincare regimen.

Myth: The best cosmetics and skincare products are the most expensive. Fact:

Levi suggests investing in a quality primer, a foundation that suits your skin

type, and a great powder. The most important thing is to find a professional-quality product that is going to protect your skin from the elements and keep it looking radiant. “Sunscreen is your best friend, and can be found at any price point,” she says. If you are looking to save some money, Levi suggests skipping eyeshadow, mascara, and lipstick.

Fact:

Originally, toners were used to clean skin, restore a pH balance, and dry out oily skin, Newland says. “Cleansers today are much better and less apt to change your pH or leave a film, and the astringent properties may irritate sensitive skin,” she explains. “Newer, gentle toners (without fragrance or alcohol) can be hydrating and even calming, but you can get these attributes in creams and serums too, leaving the toner often an unnecessary step.”

Myth: To match your makeup, use the skin on your wrist. Fact:

There are better options than your wrist. “Your hand or inner wrist can have different undertones than your face, get no or little sun exposure, and your hand or inner wrist contains a lot of large veins,” says Samantha Levi, a local makeup artist and SIMPLYkc Magazine photographer (samanthalevi.com). For example, if your skin has yellow undertones and you matched to your wrist, you might end up choosing a foundation with pink undertones, running the risk of making you look unnatural or older. Skip your neck (since that part of your body is typically shadowed), and use your chest instead, Levi says. Your chest typically receives the same sun exposure as your face and will age the same as your face.

FINANCE

5 Ways to Make Money Now BY BRIDGET MASON HESS

There’s no better time than after filing taxes to take a close look at your finances and make headway toward being more financially fit and organized. If you’re not already doing these, you can’t afford to put off these simple money moves any longer. 1. Clean up your act Spring-cleaning is not just for shining windows and shampooing carpet. Set aside

tweak the way you spend your money a little

too. Find your own system for organizing

bit at a time. Try these two simple steps:

your bills and financial papers. Do you prefer an accordion file and binders or an allelectronic system? You be the judge of what your perfect organizing system may be; but clean up your act and make an effort to keep it organized. Shred and recycle papers you don’t need, and stay on top of de-cluttering. Most of us are inundated with unwanted paper daily; the best tweak I’ve made to my own system recently is to not even bring junk mail into the house. It goes straight from the mailbox to the recycling bin.

2. Spend more wisely It takes time and effort to form new habits. Don’t set yourself up for failure by making extreme changes in your spending habits (if you don’t have to), but make a conscious effort to

• Give up just one thing this month that you don’t need. Maybe it’s the premium cable channels, a club membership no one is using, or a lesson your kids wouldn’t miss. Or, maybe it’s the choice not to buy the concert tickets or the steak dinner, yet opt for a fun, more frugal outing. Giving up one thing is not about depriving yourself, it’s about making a choice to keep more cash in your pocket that you’ll use in a different way. • Avoid rash purchases. Instead, be conscious about your spending by asking yourself a few simple questions when you shop: Why do I need this? How often or for how long will I be able to use it? Can I find it at a better price? Would I rather have something else?

PARENTING

Local Nonprofit Unites ASD Families With the Community BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE

Grade school is a time of self-discovery and emotional learning. It’s when kids hone their social and problem-solving skills. But for Chase Wilkinson, mastering those skills proved more challenging than for most other kids. Chase was born with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which has made it difficult for him to make friends. After his diagnosis, Chase’s parents moved into another school district they felt had more resources available to help children with ASD. Although Chase and his new teachers were making progress, his parents discovered that kids in his fourth-grade class didn’t understand him. So, with help from the school counselor, Chase’s parents organized a presentation about autism. “Sharing this information allowed Chase to get inside the gates of his social circle, as opposed to being a complete outsider,” says his mom, Amy Wilkinson. After seeing immediate results, the presentation became the basis for an autism awareness education program in Chase’s school, and eventually gave birth to the

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

nonprofit organization, Community Help for Autism Spectrum Everywhere (CHASE). Through three initiatives, CHASE aims to increase awareness, promote tolerance, and expand meaningful participation in all environments. In its Autism Education and Awareness Program, CHASE provides personalized, age-appropriate learning through small-group conversations in the classroom in order to educate nonautistic, or neurotypical, families and students about the unique gifts and challenges of students with autism. “It ‘puts it out there’ so other kids can relate,” Wilkinson explains. She stresses that both the child and parents as well as the school have to be on board with sharing this information.

Expanding on the classroom presentations, CHASE’s Community Organization Training initiative seeks to educate community organizations, such as scouting, athletic, and church groups, by coaching individuals with ASD and offering guidance to neurotypical peers. “The more education we have as a community, the better off we all are,” she shares. And, later this year, CHASE will implement the Professional Training and Job Mentoring initiative to educate companies and their employees as to what it means to have an autistic employee. This program also will help autistic employees understand the unwritten social and professional expectations to ensure they maneuver through the workplace successfully. Wilkinson cautions that people may not be able to see autism in those who have it because they may look just like everyone else. So when characteristics common to ASD appear, it may come as a surprise. Wilkinson wants parents and others to know CHASE exists and is here to help. “I want parents to know it’s OK to say, ‘My kid’s autistic, and here are his or her strengths and abilities.’”

GET INFORMED Each April, National Autism Awareness month recognizes the estimated 1.5 million Americans — one in 68 children — living with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Learn more about autism and CHASE at the following upcoming local events.

OUR WORLD

Every day we breathe it in, we survive on it, and we depend on it. Oxygen, simply put, is one of the most important elements we encounter. Even further, three oxygen atoms combined make up the most important protectors in our Earth’s atmosphere, and one of the most dangerous ones — ozone. There are two types of ozone. The good ozone is what protects us from the sun’s radiation. This is located in the stratosphere, and is susceptible to pollutants. The second is bad ozone, or ground-level

38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

BY MARY EDWARDS

r

ozone. According to the MidAmerica Regional Council (MARC), the bad ozone is formed when emissions from vehicles, power plants, or industry mix with heat and sunlight. Bad ozone has serious implications on health, especially for people with respiratory problems. It has become such a problem that the EPA has placed restrictions on how many pollutants our air can hold. These regulations protect both the air we breathe and the layer that protects us.

Another form of protection: MARC’s SkyCast ozone forecast for our region. Like a weather forecast, it tells you what conditions are most likely to be for the next day. Find

it at marc.org/Environment/ Air-Quality. Our ozone season lasts from April 1 to Oct. 31. Much of what has destroyed our ozone layer — and what has created poor air quality that we breathe — is from large factories and power plants. However, some measures we can take to help include checking our refrigerators and air conditioners to see if they’re working properly. Newer refrigerators don’t use the ozone-depleting chemicals, and are also a great way to reduce our impact. Most importantly, being cognizant of our emissions in vehicles or lawnmowers can drastically change our air quality, according to MARC.

MIND & BODY

BY HODDY POTTER

Stimulating the Mind-Body Connection Every Day

It is 5:46 a.m. One of my 4-year-old twins walks into the bedroom saying, “I’m hungry,” and my typical day starts. From that point on, my foot presses down on the daily gas pedal of life and doesn’t stop. 40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Life is a blur of the needs of my two seven-days-a-week businesses and three young children. Day after day, I wash, rinse, and repeat the cycle I’ve adopted to meet the demands of my life. But then one March day, in 2014, disease came knocking — not a simple cold or even the flu, but stage 4 cancer. I still am astounded, and so are the people in my life who describe me as the healthiest person they know. I took this as a major sign that I needed to slow way down, reassess, and reconnect. I am not alone in this space. So often, people treat life as a series of continuous marathons. Sprinting from event to event, task to task — treating life as a checklist to get through every day, only to wake up and do it all over again. Engaging in this type of extreme lifestyle with a lack of consciousness is harmful. It results in disharmony, burnout, and, if you are unlucky, breakdown. But you can use daily rituals to help you unplug and reconnect to yourself again as a person — not as a parent, spouse, or worker, but your actual physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. You

can harmonize each of these aspects of your life. Read on for four strategies to assist with recalibrating your energy so you connect more deeply to how you think, feel, and experience life.

1. BREATHE PURPOSEFULLY Breathing relaxes and restores you and connects you to your body. “Breathing is the first and last thing you do in your life, but in between, most people give it little thought,” says Laura Myer, a Jin Shin Jyutsu energy practitioner based in Mission, Kansas. Breathing stimulates your nervous system, releases tension, and calms the body. She suggests finding time every day — whether that is first thing after rising, on your commute to work, or even waiting in the car line at school — to focus on breath. Take deep, rich inhales and exhales for 10 minutes.

2. SIT QUIETLY “In a modern, fast-paced society, it is essential to keep the body and its energy at its optimal level for health and longevity,” says Chris

Experience the calm. Midwest Myofacial Release Center empowers you to heal at your own pace and return to a pain-free, active lifestyle through individualized treatment provided by a supportive, healing team.

Powell, owner of Missouri Acupuncture Services in Kansas City. According to Powell, simply sitting in a quiet place for 10 to 20 minutes per day to center yourself, gain clarity, and take a moment to reflect on the day can help you achieve overall serenity. Turn off the phones, tablets, and laptops and just be still. A mountain, an ocean, or a beautiful sky makes this quiet time particularly spectacular, but you can observe a sunrise or sunset in your backyard as well. This quiet and stillness sounds easy. But, Powell says, “It’s simple, yet nearly impossible for most people to accomplish.”

3. DO A CLASSIC RESTORATIVE YOGA POSE

A Simple Detox Program: Detox = A Sauna + A Juice Cleanse. That’s it. Simple. Beneficial. Hassle-free. Now featuring: Luxbelle Infrared Saunas Simple Science Juices For more information, contact Laura Christine @ 913-548-8546

Aside from a regular daily yoga practice, “Supta Baddha Konasana (reclining bound angle pose) is the best single pose to do every day,” says Susan Rodriguez, owner and teacher at Core Energy Yoga in Overland Park. To perform it, lie flat on the floor with your legs bent and feet next to each other and flat on the floor. Externally rotate your hips outward so your knees are pointing to opposite sides of the room. Take your right hand on your heart and your left hand on your belly. The hips hold a lot of emotions, Rodriguez says, and opening up in this way releases pent-up feelings and emotional blockages. This pose stimulates the mind-body connection because you can feel your heartbeat and the rise and fall of your chest.

Feeling more connected to your body will give you more energy throughout your day and help you make better choices, whether that relates to what you eat or how you interact with others.

4. MEDITATE I now meditate every day for at least 12 minutes. It is as routine as brushing my teeth. Each night, I use free, guided meditation sessions on the Internet to take me into my trance-like state. Look on

Or schedule online at: MidwestMyofascialRelease.com

Meditation helps me with symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety. And, it increases positive emotions, mental clarity, and my sense of empowerment. Meditation has changed my outlook on my cancer and made me a better mom, making me less reactionary and more tranquil.

Snickerdoodle. It’s one of my favorite words (right up there with baba ganoush). It’s also one of my favorite cookies. I love a good snickerdoodle, but I love

Browned Butter Snickerdoodles With Pudding Mix

Directions

Yield: 36 cookies

To brown the butter, heat a thick-bottomed skillet on medium heat. Add butter, whisking frequently. Continue to cook the butter until melted. The butter will start to foam and browned specks will begin to form at the bottom of the pan. It should have a nutty aroma. Watch the butter carefully because it can go from brown to burnt quickly. Remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature.

ingredients:

butter and pudding mix. The browned butter takes a few extra minutes but deepens the flavor

significantly.

bakery-style appearance.

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

You’ll never meet a prettier or tastier snickerdoodle. These are perfectly crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, cinnamon, salt and pudding mix. Set aside.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the brown butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugars. Mix until blended and smooth. Beat in the eggs until combined. Slowly add in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit. Roll the dough into tablespoon-sized balls. In a small bowl, combine the cinnamon and sugar. Roll the balls in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place dough balls about 2 inches apart on a large baking sheet that has been lined with a Silpat baking mat or parchment paper. Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes or until the cookies begin to crackle and the centers don’t jiggle. Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for 2 to 3 minutes, or until set. Transfer cookies to a wire cooling rack and cool completely.

MEMORY-BOOSTING

tricks

1 Watch your diet.

Eating foods high in antioxidants (apples, bananas, blueberries, carrots, dark green vegetables, and strawberries), healthy fats, and dark chocolate improve memory and cognition.

2 Play mind games.

Solving brainteasers like sudoku and crossword puzzles challenge your powers of logic. Similarly, brain fitness programs such as Luminosity and Mindsparke sharpen memory, concentration, alertness, and mood.

3 Sleep more.

3

Sleep deprivation can hinder our ability to commit new things to memory. And sleeping after learning is also a critical part of the memory-creation process, according to researchers from the University of Lubeck in Germany.

4 Use a unique font.

Researchers at Princeton and Indiana University discovered that people who are trying to retain new information should read it in an unfamiliar font, like Comic Sans MS or Bodoni MT. Reading it in a different font forces you to concentrate harder, which will help you recall the info more easily.

5 Meet up with friends.

1

Experts attribute some memory loss to depression and stress. But social interaction helps ward those off, so when you’re invited to go out, don’t turn down the request!

5

6

Write it down.

7

Exercise regularly.

Immediately free up some space in your brain by writing down — or typing into your phone — everything you need to do or consider. The thought behind this method is that you release the stress of trying to retain so much information, making it easier to remember the important things.

Along with improving your quality of life, regular aerobic exercise appears to boost the size of your hippocampus (the part of the brain involved in verbal memory and learning), according to a study done at the University of British Columbia.

KC Threads T-Shirts Give Back to the Community

BY MELANIE KNOPKE Photos / KC Threads

Several amazing small businesses have been popping up in Kansas City lately, and KC Threads is one of them. Not only is this shop making cute and thoughtfully designed tees for kids and adults: but the owner is giving back to our community one Tshirt at a time. It certainly gives new meaning to “giving the shirt off your back.” Owner and designer Charlena Peppes had one mission: to instill in children of all age the desire to give back to their community. With this mission came the idea of “Kind Concepts.” She believes giving back is a learned trait and hopes to unite with families to help kids learn, love, and embrace the concept. So she is encouraging clients to return their KC threads apparel to the company within one year from the purchase date, and in wearable condition. Peppes will then donate the returned apparel to local Kansas City children’s organizations. Customers also will receive 10 percent off the order. The business model truly is a win-win! You support a small local company, and it gives back to the needy children in our community. Choose from cute styles inspired by Kansas City, such as “Chief Kind One,” “Like a Royal Do,” or “KC Original.” Children’s tees are $25 and adults’ are $28. Shop KC Threads at kc-threads.myshopify.com.

Set... Whether you prefer annuals, which grow only one season and then die; perennials, which return year after year; or perhaps a combination of each, a successful summer growing season depends upon preparations made in the flower bed during the spring. Proper preparation keeps the soil healthy and also helps to ward off disease and insect problems, especially in perennial beds.

GardenGuides.com offers the following suggestions for getting your flower bed ready for planting: • R ake any leaves or garden debris that may have accumulated on the bed over the winter. Remove any mulch or straw from the ground. • Test your soil’s pH with a home testing kit. Add lime to correct for soil that is too acidic; add sulfur if your soil is too alkaline.

ant of rapid climate fluctuations — particularly in the spring months, as well as our scorching summers and the drought. Planting perennials that are recommended for this area will produce the best outcome.

What are some of the common local favorite Perennials?

PEONIES

The peony plant produces large; fragrant

flowers in mid- to late-spring. The average peony blooms within the first three years, and may grow up to three feet tall and four feet wide when fully mature. For optimal blooming, peonies need at least six hours of sun a day. Few pests or diseases affect peonies.

DAYLILIES The daylily comes in a wide array of colors and sizes. Trumpet-shaped flowers bloom from June to October, with each flower lasting only one day. Daylilies tolerate heat,

• C ompost adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil, and also improves drainage. For beds in which annuals have been planted, top with a two-inch layer of finished compost. Till the compost and the fertilizer into the soil to a depth of six to 10 inches. If nothing has been planted yet, work the compost into the soil. If, however, you have already planted some perennials in the bed, do not till. Instead, top the bed with a one-inch layer of compost around the plants and then water.

HOSTAS

Grow! The USDA developed the Plant Hardiness Zone Map as a guide to aid gardeners and growers in determining which plants are most likely to thrive in a particular location. The zones are based on the average lowest temperatures, not the lowest ever. The Kansas City area, once considered to be Zone 5, is now considered to be Zone 6, one zone warmer than Zone 5. In addition to hardiness zones, environmental factors such as

may bloom the first year they are planted, and can grow up to five feet tall. Daylilies can live many years with average care and are generally not affected by pests or disease. Hostas are often grown for their attractive foli-

age, and they bloom with white, blue, or lavender flowers. They can vary in size, with the average hosta being about two-and-ahalf feet tall. Jeff Drew, manager of the perennials department at Family Tree Nursery in Overland Park, believes that hostas are about “as easy as it gets.” He points out that they are droughtresistant once established, and they do well in shady spots. He adds that slugs are sometimes an issue but one that can easily be controlled with slug bait. In fact, some perennials have greater disease-resistance abilities and many are better at flowering thanks to cross-breeding, Drew adds. The cone flowers are on example: They now come in colors previously unavailable, such as yellow, orange, and red. Even Irises, which Drew refers to as an “old standby,” boasts new variations in colors. Additional sources: planthardiness.ars.usda.gov; GardenGuides.com
