WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION

Parenting is hard. Parenting in the age of social media is crazy hard. My oldest kiddo is only 11, and I’m already completely befuddled by all the apps and messaging services she knows about. She doesn’t have a phone of her own, but she does use our family devices and we have one extra “emergency” phone that she occasionally takes places where we might need to contact her. She has an Instagram account that we monitor. She is allowed to text a handful of friends and family. We read all of these. I thought we were doing pretty well so far. Our rules are fairly strict compared to many of her friends. But any smugness I felt got handed to me on a silver platter when I attended a presentation recently given by Overland Park Crime Prevention Officer Bill Koehn.

8

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Why would you ever give a KID a handheld device on which she can access or post anything at anytime? She can’t even remember to brush her teeth most days!

this month, Julie Burton does a great job of going over these and telling you what to look for. Read this, folks. Know what your kids are using.

NO CHILD should have a smartphone until she is at LEAST in high school.

Also in this issue, teaching kids good personal finance skills, man-friendly beauty treatments (my husband said, “You want me to WHAT??”) and the best comprehensive list of things to do in Kansas City I’ve seen in a long time.

Those were two of the key points of Officer Koehn’s presentation. Most of us shifted uncomfortably in our seats. He’s probably being a little too conservative, I thought. But he wasn’t. Officer Koehn backed up his statements with heartbreaking stories of crimes and consequences that have impacted local kids. Kids in our neighborhood — not kids halfway across the country. Crimes that have scarred kids forever. Consequences that have kept kids out of college. Real stuff. He also went through many of the ridiculous messaging apps and social media sites that kids use to help keep their communication hidden. In our Parenting section

Happy April!!

40 FREE (OR CHEAP) FAMILY ACTIVITIES IN KC BY TINA KLUGMAN Photos / Visit KC

Kansas City, what was once one of the nation’s best-kept secrets, may not be so secret anymore. But it doesn’t change the fact that it is still one of the most affordable and family-friendly cities in the U.S. Listed below are many free or low-cost activities for every age that won’t stretch the budget. Be sure to check with each location for hours, ages, and fees before visiting. Kansas City is known as “The City of Fountains” and is said to have more fountains than Rome. You can take a self-guided driving or walking tour of the areas’ fountains. Download a brochure at kcfountains.com. More than 30 farmers markets call Kansas City home. The largest market in the region is at the historic City Market, located downtown and open weekends from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. While there, make sure to stop by the Steamboat Arabia Museum, a unique KC attraction displaying the largest collection of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world.

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

If you’re headed downtown and you want to plan a day full of activities, Crown Center is the perfect place to start. Get some shopping done, grab lunch, and check out the Crown Center Children’s Exhibit, which is free. The current exhibit, Animal Tales & Trails, runs from Feb. 6 to May 1. Make art using Hallmark-provided materials at Kaleidoscope. The free daily art sessions, perfect for all ages, start at 10 a.m. and are on a first-come basis. Next door to Kaleidoscope is the Hallmark Visitors Center. Learn the history of Hallmark during the free self-guided walk-through tour, which you can enjoy at your own pace. Also located at Crown Center are the SEA LIFE Aquarium and LEGOLAND® Discovery Center. Purchase a combo ticket for both attractions to save money on admission. Just across the street from Crown Center is the gorgeous Union Station. Tucked in the back is a permanent railroad exhibit called the KC Rail Experience, a long room filled with various model

trains. Union Station also hosts frequently changing traveling exhibits, such as the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition that lasts through May 1. Also located inside Union Station is Science City, where kids can play with water, see live animals, dig for dinosaur bones, and do science experiments, to name just a few! Become a Union Station member to get free admission to many of the building’s attractions. Across the street from Union Station is The Money Museum at the Federal Bank of Kansas City, which features a free and educational one-hour tour of the region’s largest cash vault. You even get to take home a bag of (shredded) money! Become one with nature at KC’s many nature centers and parks. The Kauffman Memorial Garden features 7,000 plants and beautiful water features. Jacob L. Loose Park, located near the Country Club Plaza, is one of the city’s most historic parks. Art and nature combine at the 300-acre Overland Park Arboretum, which offers paved and wood-chip hiking

trails. There are surprises around every corner — from an outdoor model train garden to the Monet Garden — a reallife version of one of Claude Monet’s famous paintings. Admission is $3 for ages 13 and over, $1 for ages 6–12, and free for ages 5 and under. The garden offers free admission for everyone on Tuesdays. Want to learn more about local wildlife? Catch a glimpse of Missouri’s native animals in the wildlife viewing room or on the trails at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center, where admission is free. Lakeside Nature Center, located in Swope Park, is one of Missouri’s largest wildlife rehabilitation facilities. Learn about the animal of the month every Saturday at 10 a.m. during Mother Nature Reads, a story time perfect for young children. Finally, Ernie Miller Nature Center in Olathe was the first nature center in Johnson County. It features live animal displays, three miles of nature trails, and a diverse range of habitats, all for free.

Room, which is a hands-on, interactive space for ages 3–12. Many local businesses offer free tours, where you can go behind-the-scenes and watch how they operate. Harley Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations Plant offers such a tour. Kids ages 12 and up can watch the assembly of a V-Rod from start to finish. The Roasterie also offers a free tour, during which you can watch Kansas City’s best coffee go from bean to brew. On rainy days, community centers are a great place to let the kids let off some steam. Many community centers have

If you’re seeking animals of the more exotic variety, visit the Kansas City Zoo. Becoming a zoo member pays for itself in just two visits. Or, take a trip to Deanna Rose Farmstead in Overland Park. Along with a large variety of animals, the farm features pony rides, a fishing pond, mining area, goat-feeding area, butterf ly garden, and more. Admission to the farm is free Monday through Thursday and $2 per person on weekends. Kids 1 year old and younger are always free. Kansas City is home to many museums. Travel back in time, for free, at the Johnson County Museum of History. Toward the back is KidScape (for ages ages 3–9), an exhibit featuring 14 different play areas, including a post office, hospital, and park. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art features one of the largest galleries in the U.S. Admission to the permanent collection and most exhibitions is free. Admission, parking, special exhibits, and programs are all free at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, which showcases modern and contemporary art year-round. The inside of The Museum at Prairiefire is as unique as the outside. Create your own dinosaur and see it come to life in the Great Hall. The Great Hall is free, but there is a fee for the Discovery

when moms get a free admission from 9:30 a.m. to noon to the “edutainment center” with the purchase of a child’s admission. Shopping for swing sets but not ready to shell out the dough yet? Rainbow Play Systems in Olathe lets your kids play on their equipment for two hours for only $5 on weekdays. Some stores provide free crafts for kids. Home Depot provides free workshops for kids on the first Saturday of each month. Lowe’s Build & Grow is a free kids clinic that takes place on Saturdays at 10 a.m. Register online ahead of time for both Lowe’s and Home Depot classes. Lakeshore Learning in Merriam pro-

special times for little ones with free or low-cost entertainment and activities. Check out the Lil Tumblers Open Gym at the Blue Valley Recreation Center, Toddler Takeover at the Kansas City North Community Center, Gym for Me at the Lenexa Community Center, Toddle Time at the Matt Ross Community Center, and open gym at The Sylvester Powell Jr. Community Center in Mission. Many indoor play places also have open gyms, where guests can run rampant for one- or two-hour periods at a discounted rate. Little Monkey Business, a fully enclosed play area for ages 0–8, offers Power Hour from 1–3 p.m. Monday and Wednesday for $5. Paradise Park, a family entertainment center in Lee’s Summit, offers “Moms Free Mondays,”

vides a free craft project for kids ages 3 and up every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. No reservations are required. Scheel’s has been a popular attraction with moms since its grand opening in June 2015. The retail giant has a bowling alley, a 16,000-gallon aquarium, and even a ferris wheel. When all else fails, take the kids to the playground! You can find one on just about every corner. One of the most popular outdoor playgrounds in the city is Penguin Park, located in the Northland — and it’s hard to miss it when you drive by! It has an expansive playground (including giant animal structures — you can even slide down a penguin) and is encircled by a 1.88-mile trail.

APP OF THE MONTH LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE ANYWHERE, ANYTIME The gist: Did you resolve to learn something new this year? Perhaps another lan-

guage? It’s not too late to start! The free Duolingo app is a great way to learn grammar structures and build your vocabulary. The app is aimed at beginners, getting you hooked by turning learning a language into a fun, addictive game. Earn points for correct answers, race against the clock, and level up. Lessons are bite-sized yet effective, meaning you can play during moments of downtime. The app also sends you daily reminders. You have many language options, including Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish, Russian, and more.

The cons: Once you get to more advanced levels, you might find the learning pro-

cess a bit inadequate — you won’t be able to master a language by just following the lesson trajectory. Another problem includes a lack of a foreign-language keypad, an issue when the app asks you to write something in the language you’re learning.

5 STEPS FOR NEWBIE ORGANIC GARDENERS With spring upon us, there’s no better time to start reaping the benefits of your very own garden. The idea of gardening organically doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it can easily save money and give you peace of mind knowing your fruits and veggies are sustainably grown and pesticide-free. The following tips are a great place to start if you’re thinking about starting your own organic garden:

1 2 3 4 5

Choose veggies and fruits that aren’t as susceptible to disease. When shopping for vegetables, try to find disease-resistant varieties, which should thrive without needing pesticides. This information can usually be found on seed packets or plant tags. If your soil isn’t as nutrient-rich as it needs to be, fertilize with a natural product, such as manure from plant-eating animals like rabbits and chickens. Mulch not only helps your garden look nice, but it also prevents weeds and fungal diseases. Organic mulches are best. As they decompose in your garden, the mulches add even more nutrients to your plants. Grow some flowers. They’ll improve the look of your garden and will also attract beneficial bugs to help eliminate pesky insects that feed on your plants. Don’t be hard on yourself. Organic gardens don’t look as perfect as those that use pesticides, and that’s OK. Take comfort in knowing your food is chemical-free, and that you worked hard to grow it.

IN FOCUS MANI, PEDI, WAX, REPEAT: GOOD CLEAN FUN AT HOOPLA BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Nicole Bissey

Megan Thornberry and Molly Maxwell want to add a little “sophisticated fun” to your life in the form of manis, pedis, waxes, facials, and massage services. These two moms-turned-business partners first met when their sons were young classmates. During the many play dates that followed, the boys became best friends and the two women came up with an idea for a salon where busy mothers and others could pop in or schedule an appointment for a little “me time.” The salon they envisioned would have to be accessible, super-clean, and hygienic, but also fun and relaxing. In other words, the kind of salon they would want to visit. Their vision became HOOPLA, and the first location opened in The Fairway Shops during the summer of 2012. Two more locations have opened since then: in the Crossroads last April, and Leawood last May. Not only have Maxwell and Thornberry created the salon of their dreams, they also admit to filling each shop’s retail space with a variety of personal and gift items they’d want to buy — including many Kansas City-based goods.

Megan Thornberry (at left), a former attorney, and Molly Maxwell, a former marketing executive, quit their jobs in 2012 to open HOOPLA salon.

16

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Both Thornberry and Maxwell believe you feel better when you’re in a place that feels good, so they designed HOOPLA’s overall decor and aesthetics to exude a fresh, clean, feel-good vibe different from other salons you may have tried in the past. All three locations have similar interiors, purposely done in white with touches of black and

pops of yellow, and each shares the same commitment to impeccable hygienic practices and an across-the-board level of service. “You can see that it’s clean,” Maxwell says. “We’re not trying to hide anything here!”

HOOPLA has its own line of “mini-polish” nail colors. About the size of a tube of lipstick, the bottles are designed for portability and sustainability. Disposable files and buffers are used only once then discarded or given to clients. Nondisposable tools are sterilized after every use with a medical-grade autoclave, the same equipment used in medical offices and hospitals, then packaged in sealed, sterile pouches just like the instruments at your dentist’s office. One of the first things you’ll notice about HOOPLA’s custombuilt pedicure benches and soaking basins is the absence of whirlpool jets. “What, no jets?” you ask. That’s right. Not having jets means no dangerous bacteria hiding in plumbing or filters. And the basins themselves are made from high-quality stainless steel, which can be cleaned and sterilized thoroughly. To make up for the lack of jets, massage is included with every pedicure — something Maxwell and Thornberry say they actually prefer themselves. This means HOOPLA pedis are a lot more “hands on” than pedicures at other salons. And here’s an added bonus: all nail techs have been trained in proper massage techniques by HOOPLA’s licensed massage therapists. All nail technicians are also “HOOPLA-trained” to ensure customers receive the same level of service with each mani or pedi no matter what location they visit or who they see for their appointment. HOOPLA even has its own line of “mini-polish” nail colors, which was launched when the Fairway location opened. About the size of a tube of lipstick, the bottles are designed for portability and sustainability. (Think about it: when was the last time you used up a whole bottle of the same color of polish?) Unlike other mini-sized polishes, the HOOPLA line features fullsized brushes for a smooth and easy application.

HOOPLA has created its own line of mini-nail polishes, all of which are “five-free,” which means they do not contain the five most toxic ingredients found in most other polishes.

Visit hooplastudio.com or ask your nail technician for details. Not only are HOOPLA mini-polishes five-free, they are made in the U.S. and are not tested on animals. Colors are released seasonally with approximately 40 colors available at any given time. All of the HOOPLA shades have whimsical names personally created by Thornberry and Maxwell and inspired by real-life experiences. For example, one of their most popular colors is Playground Dreams — which is, of course — where it all began.

All of HOOPLA’s polishes are “five-free,” meaning they do not contain the five most toxic ingredients found in many other brands: toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl, phthalate, and camphor. And because they are five-free, the glass bottles can be recycled. Bring in three bottles of HOOPLA polish (empty or not) and you’ll receive a free add-on service with your pedi. PHOTOS By AngelA C. | SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

With determination and a small budget, she and her husband, Ted, flipped their first home, a Kansas City fixer-upper. Though their original intent hadn’t been to sell, buyer interest was there, and the pair discovered they loved house updates. They especially enjoy homes that can be done on a minimal budget and with maximum creativity. Perhaps their biggest trophy to date is an entire kitchen overhaul for $500 — after receiving contractor quotes that ranged between $12,000 and $15,000. “I think people automatically assume you have to spend a lot of money to redo a kitchen,” she says. “It’s really just about research and having the guts to try it yourself.” With a life-long knack for design, Kuether and her husband used affordable fixes such as cleaning up dingy cabinet pulls (that they found for free), repurposing existing countertops, and mixing leftover paint for a new color without buying additional paint. After finding inspiration through YouTube, the Kuethers got to work. Without the funds for new granite counters, the couple completely redid their laminate tops. They pulled up the top layer, spread on concrete, and stained and sealed the new surface. Although it’s not a long-term solution (five years, give or take), Kuether says it’s a great way to update while saving up for the real thing.

And the end result? It rivals expensive granite and gives the home a custom look. “I’m very determined and I always find new ideas,” Kuether explains. “You really have to get creative when you’re on a budget.” Making a few small updates at a time will help you to avoid dropping loads of money all at once. It’s also important to take steps that save time, such as choosing a primer that doesn’t require sanding. Friends often come to Kuether with ideas. While, as a mom and full-time graphic designer, she doesn’t have the time to take on unlimited side projects, she says she enjoys doling out advice: “I love to help my friends that way. I live for that type of stuff.” When looking to update a home, Kuether encourages DIYers to be persistent versus committing to a large expense. If you’re willing to do some research and try something new, you can accomplish much more than you may realize, she says. “I think it surprises people what you can really do.”

AGING WELL

BY JULIE BURTON

Beyond the Wrinkles and Gray Hair: Why Does My Body Do That? Our bodies are good at telling us when something is wrong. Our bodies are also subtly changing our looks as we start to age. What is the difference between aging and signs of something wrong? Cierra Dillard, a nurse practitioner at IPC in the geriatrics division in Overland Park, Kansas, tells us what is normal aging. When to call a doctor: Skin sagging is not a medical concern

unless you have lost a large amount of weight recently but don’t know why.

The older we get, the “uglier” our feet look, especially our toenails. Why do our toenails thicken? Fungus is present in everyone’s body. The most common issue is a fungus infection called onychomycosis. Onychomycosis affects one third of the older population. There is an increased incidence with obesity, diabetes, and peripheral artery disease. A decrease in circulation can also attribute to thick toenails. Diabetes and other medical conditions can play a role. When to call a doctor: If you’re having increased pain or signs of

infection around the nail bed such as swelling, redness, or drainage.

Why do our bones “crack” when we stand up? SKC: We all know gray hairs show up with age. But why does our hair get thin? Dillard: It’s normal to lose about 100 hairs a day, at any age. All

men will lose hair. Some men may lose more than others due to a combination of genes and male hormones. Women can lose hair as well. Hormonal changes may be to blame for women. Female pattern baldness, like men, can occur as well. There is little anyone can do to stop thinning hair. When to call a doctor: If you lose chunks of hair or if you get

patches of hair loss — you could have a problem with your thyroid.

The sagging elbows and knees! Why does skin sag in our joints first? The face and neck are the first to show wrinkles. Caring for the skin on the elbows and knees are often forgotten. The skin on the joints is always rubbing against something — your pants, your shirt, your desk. Dead skin’s cells accumulate, thus making the skin “sag.” You should use a moisturizer that contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) to help loosen the dead skin accumulation.

28

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Most pops are harmless. Noises may be a result from cartilage injury or loss of muscle tissue. Gas in the joints and ligaments can cause a popping noise, as well as in the tendons (like in your knees when you stand). When to see a doctor: When there is pain accompanied with

the cracks and pops. Talk your doctor about screening for osteoporosis as well.

Extra body weight shows up in both sexes as we age. Is there anything we can do to prevent that? It’s harder to lose fat as we age because of the decrease in metabolism. Your metabolism decreases half of one percent per year after the age of 25. The three main factors that slow down a person’s metabolism are: decrease in muscle mass, change in hormone levels, and decreased caloric need. When to call a doctor: Chronic diseases such as diabetes, hy-

pothyroidism, and congestive heart failure can cause you to lose or gain weight and must be watched by a doctor. You can always add strength training to your exercise routine to help your metabolism from slowing.

So You Want to Buy a Horse Do you find yourself day-dreaming about galloping in the wind or relaxing at the barn? A horse certainly can be a great friend, hobby, and investment. But before you buy, there’s a lot to consider. A horse is a companion, but it’s also a longterm commitment. You shouldn’t buy a horse without thorough research, soul-searching, and preparation. Start by asking yourself these questions: 1. Do you know how to ride?

purchasing one. This will help you make an informed decision when buying. You can take classes at most local ranches.

2. How often will you ride the horse? You should consistently take time with your horse, especially while you are first learning to ride or getting to know your horse.

30

You also may consider “leasing” a horse from a local ranch. If leasing a horse doesn’t give you enough riding time, only then should you consider buying.

3. Where will you house your horse? Horse owners generally keep their horse on their own land or pay

The initial cost of a horse varies depending on the type. But there are tons of other costs beyond the initial purchase, such as veterinarian fees and stable costs. Kuhlmann recommends you open a horse savings account to cover unexpected expenses. Taking your horse to an animal hospital can be costly, and having money to cover these expenses is essential.

The bottom line If you are a horse-lover but don’t have the time, money, or commitment to take care of a horse, there are still options. Taking classes from your local stable or leasing a horse may allow you the benefits of riding without taking on the responsibility of ownership. For many people, these are better options, especially while first getting into riding.

The Men’s Guide to Grooming Man grooming. Yes, it’s a thing. Nowadays, men take their grooming routines very seriously. Take my husband, for example, who spends way more on hair products than I do. And I have a friend whose husband gets waxed more than she does! Men getting manicures? It’s not as uncommon as you think. While some men own up to their grooming routine, many more need direction and advice. Fortunately, men have a variety of tools and products from which to choose. And for those who prefer to outsource their grooming duties, the metro offers plenty of great places to go.

WAXING/TRIMMING

FACIAL HAIR

For men, this is right up there with getting a haircut. Nobody wants a unibrow or eyebrows that look like caterpillars! Men’s salons offer eyebrow waxing services, but he can simply have his hairstylist give his brows a trim when he’s there for a haircut.

Whether your man is a beard guy or loves a close shave, there are tons of great products to keep the hair and skin intact. KC Beard Co. is a local company that uses 100 percent organic ingredients to make their beard oils (kcbeardco.com). You can find luxury skincare products, shave gels, razors, and aftershave lotions at The Art of Shaving on The Country Club Plaza (theartofshaving.com). A hot-towel shave is to men like a facial is to women. At Sole Patch in Prairie Village, you can book him the “Harmonic Hot Towel Shave,” which includes a pre-shave oil massage, shave cream, three hot towels, and passes with a safety razor (solepatchmensshop.com).

The Gents Place in Leawood also offers body-waxing services, for those who need a little bit more help. If your man looks like he’s wearing a sweater at the pool, this might be a good option for him. And can we discuss nose hair for a minute? Nose hair trimmers cost about $10 and you can get them at almost any drugstore. Now, there is no excuse for nose hairs.

NAILS My dad always told me how important it is for a guy to have clean hands and nicely kept nails. I completely agree with that statement. Nobody wants their man to have dirt under his nails, or jagged edges that scratch you when you hold his hand! The Gents Place offers a service called “Hand Repair.” (It’s essentially a manicure, but with a more masculine name.)

HAIR Hair product is just as important as the haircut itself. If your stylist cuts your man’s hair (which is very common!), ask what product is right for his hair texture and style. Most men actually need some sort of product, whether it’s a gel, pomade, or texturizing

spray. Also, there is no reason why the man in your life can’t use the “good” shampoo. Men want to keep their locks looking great, too! Check out Imperial Barber Grade products at Baldwin in Leawood and The Country Club Plaza. (Their pomade is one of my favorites!)

SKIN Most men I know just splash water on their face and call it a day. It would not hurt for them to add a few products into their weekly routine. An exfoliating scrub used once a week will clear out pores and give his skin a fresh look. Portland General Store, based in Portland, Maine, hand-blends its popular Rhassoul Cleansing Ball Face Bomb (portlandgeneralstore.com). The deep-cleansing

product is made with sandalwood oil, hydrosol of wild geranium and Damascus rose, plus finely ground walnut shells to help with exfoliation. New York City-based Kiehl’s has been perfecting its skincare line for more than 150 years. The Facial Fuel Heavy Lifting Cream is a great place to start. It’s a clinically demonstrated antiaging defense treatment specifically formulated for men’s thicker, coarser skin. Also check out Eye Alert, an energizing eye treatment that combats puffiness and dark circles. You can find Kiehl’s at Nordstrom or kiehls.com.

PARENTING

BY JULIE BURTON

SOCIAL MEDIA UNLOCKED It’s safe to say teenagers are the most technically-savvy individuals in the household. When it comes to social media, teens are always changing how they communicate with their friends. Most kids are responsible with social media apps. But that doesn’t mean you don’t need to know the ins and outs of the social media world. The more you know, the more you can talk about safe choices and looking out for your teen’s happiness. Here is a peek into the trending world of social media. (Hint: Facebook is not trendy.)

MICROBLOGGING APPS TWITTER Twitter allows users to post 140-character messages or photos, called “tweets.” Teens use it to share tidbits of their thoughts and to keep up with news and celebrities. What parents should know: A private Twitter page is possible, but most teens have a public account. Because of the “retweet”

feature (similar to “sharing” on Facebook) messages can spread to a large audience quickly.

TUMBLR Tumblr is a mix between a blog and Twitter. It’s a streaming collection of written messages, pictures, and videos. Users can post their own work or reblog others. A user’s profile is called a “tumblelog.” With teens, humor is the primary use of Tumblr. What parents should know: Like Twitter, most accounts on Tumblr are made public. Content there can be raunchy at times.

VINE Vine displays users’ short, looping, video clips. Most teens get creative and post humor-related videos. Vine makes it easy to share videos on other social media channels, such as Facebook or Twitter. What parents should know: Vine is full of inappropriate videos, including depictions of drug use and offensive language. Most accounts are set to public viewing.

SELF-DESTRUCTING/SECRET APPS YIK YAK Yik Yak allows users to post anonymous, Twitter-like comments to the nearest Yik Yak users. Teens get the thrill of knowing their anonymous posts can be seen within a 1.5-mile radius. The app is meant for those in college, so developers “geofence” middle and high school campuses to prevent younger teens from using it. What parents should know: By default, Yik Yak shows your location unless you disable this feature. This app has become a huge problem because of cyber-bullying and sexually explicit content since everyone is anonymous.

SNAPCHAT Snapchat is a picture-messaging app. It allows users to put a time limit on pictures and videos they share with friends before they disappear. Most teens use the app to show funny or embarrassing photos without the risk of them going public. What parents should know: Sexting (sexually explicit photos) can appeal to teens with Snapchat. But data doesn’t disappear forever, and you can easily take screenshots.

WHISPER Whisper is a “confessional” app. Users anonymously post anything on their minds along with a picture. This app appeals

to teens because they can post their feelings without fear of judgment. What parents should know: Content is typically never positive. It can range from depression, substance abuse, and other dark topics. Whispers can also be sexual in nature.

Board Certified Pediatric Dentists Compassionate team of experts to put each child at ease Several treatment options for apprehensive patients Fun incentives at every visit Excellent oral health education

BURN NOTE

“This dental office goes above and beyond to make the experience comfortable and positive for patients and paretns. They are knowledgeable, proffesional, and efficeient.”

Burn Note erases messages forever after a set period of time. It’s limited to only words — no video or pictures can be sent. Messages are opened by a spotlight system, which requires a finger swipe that shows a portion of a message at a time. This discourages screenshots. What parents should know: You don’t have to have the app to receive messages. They can be sent as a link. Although the company claims messages delete forever, many experts are skeptical of this claim.

KIK MESSENGER Kik doesn’t have texting limits or fees, so texting rates do not apply. Users can easily send their own pictures and videos to other Kik users. What parents should know: There is a risk of getting texts from strangers if your kid posts his or her Kik name to other socialmedia sites.

OOVOO This video, voice, and messaging app allows users to chat with up to 12 people at a time for free. It’s similar to Apple’s FaceTime, only users talk with more than one person. What parents should know: It’s fairly safe regarding privacy. Users can only chat with other approved users. Like all apps, ooVoo can be highly distracting.

ASK.FM Ask.fm is a question-and-answer app. Users can ask questions anonymously on someone’s public profile, which creates a public forum on everyone’s public page. This app is appealing because teens are curious about what others think of them. What parents should know: Ask.fm has been linked to suicides in the U.S. and U.K. Negative and insulting questions are common and, because of their anonymity, no one knows who the cyberbullies are.

MIND & BODY

BY JULIE BURTON

Being Well (Even When You’re Sick)

Imagine living life in the present moment. Dwelling on the past is not allowed and anxious feelings of the future disappear. It’s called mindfulness. Mindfulness is when we pay attention to our present surroundings, on purpose, and in a particular way. It’s being aware moment-to-moment. Your mind focuses on your breaths and listening to your body. The clutter in your mind is released and stress fades. When someone is diagnosed with a serious or life-threatening illness, living each day to its fullest almost becomes imperative. Coco McAtee is a perinatal social worker for Women’s Services at Overland Park Regional Medical Center — the largest antepartum unit in the region and a part of HCA Midwest Health. McAtee works with high-risk pregnancies. These women must be on bedrest in a hospital environment. Her job is to help families cope with difficult diagnoses. Even though McAtee works in the prenatal field, practicing mindfulness helps with any serious or life-threatening illness.

40

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Be ‘in the moment’ anywhere, anytime Mindfulness has been a popular term tossed around the world of mental health in recent years. It’s nothing new. The mindfulness practice stems from ancient Buddhist roots. But we are just now able to prove how the brain is affected by living moment-tomoment. It can be practiced anywhere. Some will repeat a mantra or a sound to aid in concentration with their eyes closed. Mindfulness can be practiced with open eyes by focusing on inhaling and

exhaling while you take a walk. Your eyes may focus on the concrete in front of you or on your feet. You may even focus on your breathing in the car, relieving the stress of traffic. “Today, Americans want facts. With today’s technology, we are now able to see images of the brain and how it changes under this restful state,” McAtee says. “We have the ability to use our minds to order our body to relax in a stressful situation. We can absolutely drop our blood pressure in a meditative state. There’s a definite mind-body connection.”

Mindfulness in the medical world That is not to say mindfulness can cure cancer or have power over modern medicine. “When someone is ill, mindfulness works as an adjunct with medical treatment,” she explains. “You’re self-checking the mind — it’s your own tool.” Upon learning the diagnosis of a serious illness, mindfulness will not come into play. And for a good reason — the brain will always buffer difficult news. This is why some people may feel numb or go into a state of shock. Some may even be angry or question the diagnosis. This is not a mindful practice. And no one would expect a person to go into a mindfulness state. Mindfulness is only useful as you begin to process the information after the shock. “In the moments of aloneness, it’s natural to question the meaning of life and ask, ‘What do I do now?’” McAtee shares. “This is where mindfulness can help you to live each day as fully as you can. The past becomes unnecessary, and anxiety about the future can be suppressed by living day-to-day.” Serious and life-threatening diagnoses can trigger depression in some individuals. If this occurs, she recommends seeking out a credentialed teacher, someone who has practiced and taught mindfulness for a long time. “If you are learning how to do mindfulness, it’s common for the brain to do what we call ‘monkey brain’ or ‘monkey mind.’ That means all our thoughts come in at once,” McAtee explains. “Sometimes a person with depression will have too many negative thoughts and they’ll stick. They need a professional to check in with to help filter those thoughts.” Even caregivers and the medical community must separate themselves from giving a hard diagnosis. Doctors, nurses, and caregivers are empathic, but they also need to take time to discharge feelings in order to provide the highest level of support to the patient. Many caregivers practice mindfulness in some form to best help patients. “The most important thing we can do as caregivers is be present for our patients without pulling on our own emotions,” she says. “I take a few moments to empty my mind before I have to deliver hard news.” Our minds are powerful. But you have to practice training the mind to live day-to-day, moment-to-moment. Learn how to enjoy what’s in front of you without worrying about tomorrow. McAtee describes mindfulness best: “Remember how to be present for yourself and how to be present for others.”

KEEP YOUR OLD CAR LOOKING BRAND NEW

Dr. Dent was one of the original companies to offer paintless dent removal. The business, which was originally founded by Delton Griffe and Don Elliott, has been employee-owned and operated for more than 25 years. It has been at its current location in Overland Park with owners Delton Griffe, Mike Logan, and Justen Green, for

He found out about Dr. Dent from a dealership when he had some dings on his car. “I went to Dr. Dent and I was incredibly impressed, and I’ve been going there ever since,” he says. “There’s been some vehicles belonging to friends of mine that have been done by other places, and you can always tell that someone has worked on their car. When these guys do it, it is factory fresh. They’re literally artists.”

Owner Mike Logan repairs a dent.

PDR repairs small dents, door dings, and hail damage that have not broken the paint, without affecting or harming the factory finish. However, if there is minor paint damage, such as scrapes, scratches or chips, Dr. Dent is one of the few shops in the Kansas City area that can correct the damage by using a state-of-the-art paint-matching system. Comprehensive insurance will cover the cost of PDR (minus your deductible, of course). If you own your vehicle, the choice to get those dents and dings fixed is yours, but if you have a loan outstanding on your vehicle, you will likely need to get them fixed, as the lien holder will want their asset’s value protected. Dr. Dent works with all insurance companies.

Make life easier by getting organized and more!

Dr. Dent offers walk-in service, but prefers appointments. The company works with several dealerships and bodyshops for on-site work as well as with individuals. The staff even offers mobile dent repair, which includes most of the services offered in-house. They say business picks up after a major hail storm, so if you plan to take your car to Dr. Dent after a storm, be sure to make an appointment.

GOOD TASTES

Practically Healt hy & Oh-So-Delicious

Ch-ch-ch-chia. Does that conjure up a certain image for anyone else?

Lucky for you, chia seeds don’t come from chia pets. I had never heard of them until my husband randomly brought home a bag last year and started adding them to his yogurt. I’m pretty sure he was secretly watching the Dr. Oz show at work, and learned about the amazing health benefits these little powerhouses pack into one tiny seed. According to the great (Dr.) Oz, chia seeds were a staple in the diets of the Aztecs and Mayans. Chia actually got its name from the Mayan word

for “strength.” They’ve been around forever, but just recently got noticed for their ridiculously awesome health benefits. They’re unusually high in fiber, omega fatty acids, calcium, antioxidants, and much more — even protein. All for a minimum number of calories and a pleasant crunch. They look and feel exactly like poppy seeds. So I thought they’d be a great candidate for my lemon poppyseed muffin recipe. I was right. They’re perfect and, combined with the greek yogurt in these muffins, you could almost call them healthy.

Lemon Chia Seed Muffins Makes 12 muffins

Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2 large eggs 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt Zest of 2 lemons, finely grated 1/4 cup lemon juice, about 1 lemon 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 cup canola oil

Directions Preheat your oven to 375°F and line muffin tins with paper baking cups. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and chia seeds. In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, yogurt, lemon zest, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and canola oil. Stir into the flour mixture just until the ingredients are incorporated. Fill the muffin cups two-thirds of the way with batter. Bake for approximately 18 to 20 minutes, or until centers are set when you jiggle the pan. Do not let the tops get golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from the muffin tin to a wire rack. Serve muffins warm or at room temperature.

Note: You can add a little sweetness by drizzling a glaze of powdered sugar, milk, and a smidge of almond extract over the muffins.

Lindsay Weiss cooks from her home on the range in the outskirts of Kansas City. She’s won more than $100,000 in recipe contests, but still struggles to please her picky taste-testers Kate, Carter, and baby Cash. You can find her kid-tested, hubby-approved recipes at sugarmamacooks.com.

Cool colors

Store your leather and invest in suede. From jackets to bags, skirts and shoes, this is a must-have for spring. Ruffles, high necklines, puffy sleeves, and florals reminiscent of the Victorian era swept the runways for spring. From loose, open-weave styles to cropped sweaters, melange knits, and long cardigans, the sweater is the layering piece you can’t live without.

Spanish influence

Channel your inner señorita with ruffles, lace, embroidery, and off-the-shoulder silhouettes.

Spanish influence

Soft stripes of the past few seasons are taking a back seat to big and bold stripes for 2016. The bag silhouette of the season is straight across the top and rounded on the bottom, and most often found in a cross-body style. Pantone, the world’s authority on color, picked “rose quartz” (a soft pink) and “serenity blue” (a cool, tranquil blue) as the two colors of the year. Both look great when paired with earthy tones, as well as navy blue and grey.

Find these styles and more on-trend pieces at Alysa René at Park Place in Leawood.

7

THINGS YOU SHOULD

stop hoarding 1

Those books collecting dust.

2

Half-finished makeup and nail polishes.

3

Old technology and cords.

4

Gifts you received but don’t really like.

5

Decorative knick-knacks you’ve had for what seems like forever.

When’s the last time you actually re-read those novels? Instead of storing the books you’ve read — or have yet to read — consider leaving them in a little neighborhood library. Keep only the ones you absolutely love or that have changed your life.

Not only does keeping those six tubes of mascara and 13 lipsticks add waaaay too much clutter, using expired makeup products can be hazardous. Mascara usually lasts just three months before becoming a bacteria threat, and cream products typically expire within six months.

Are you still hanging on to your Motorola RZR? Perhaps you’re keeping your old devices because you think they still have pictures on them or notes you want to keep. And do you even still have the gadgets those cords are for? Time to get rid of them.

You’re not obligated to keep the gift. Instead of trying to find a place for the item, regift it to someone immediately (don’t bother waiting for a special occasion!) or put it directly into a box full of other donations. Then take the box to a thrift store when it’s full.

If they’ve simply become “dust traps,” consider removing them. You might find that you don’t even notice — or miss them — when they’re gone.

48

6

Excessive office supplies.

7

Piles of magazines.

Is your desk drawer packed full of paper clips, rubber bands, Post-it notes, and pens and markers? Time to dedicate a small basket to hold all these items. Trash the pens and markers that no longer work.

Maybe you plan on coming back to that great article you read. But do this with nearly every issue of the publication you subscribe to, and your magazine pile can quickly get out of hand. Try tearing out the articles you want to keep — or simply look for the article online and bookmark it. Then recycle that huge stack or donate all the old issues to a local senior center.
