DATES FOR CHARITY BY ASHLEY PUDERBAUGH
SocialHeart’s Date Auction raised $14,000 for The Dream Factory of Greater of Kansas City last year.
On Aug. 7, you could have the chance to win an adventure of a lifetime. SocialHeart’s 2015 Date Auction, to be held on the outdoor Liberty Memorial Observation Deck at the National World War I Museum, features date packages from 20 Kansas City professionals. Bid on date packages that range from a set of Hy-Vee Royals tickets to a helicopter tour of downtown Kansas City to a week’s stay in Florida. And, even better, all the money raised will benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City. Started in 2010, the Date Auction has raised nearly $50,000 for local Kansas City charities. Last year’s event raised $14,000 for The Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City. “Having so many young professionals who want to give back and donate their time really says a lot about our community,” says Julie Ray, SocialHeart cofounder. “On top of that, the event is a total blast. This year, a three-piece jazz band and DJ Ashton Martin

serve as entertainment, plus we will have a kissing booth from Shane Co., the John Deprisco Photo Bus, and more.” Meet six of the 20 date candidates below.
BRETT SCHERER Born and raised in Kansas City, this entrepreneur stays busy running his real estate investment firm and working as a contractor at Cerner. He also volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I’m in a photograph at the Arabia Steamboat Museum as an awkward little boy with a funky haircut, wearing clothes from the 1980s. My family excavated the boat when I was around 8 years old. Few people know exactly which photo it is, and I’ll keep it that way! Why do you want to help the Ronald McDonald House? I feel as though volunteering gives me a different perspective
on life. Getting out of my comfort zone and placing myself into the environment of those who need help has always been something that I enjoy. Where is your favorite brunch spot? Kona Grill. I love sushi like children love McDonalds. Who is your role model and why? Steve Jobs. The man could really think outside the box. That’s what I strive to do as well.
OLIVIA HARGREAVES Although originally from Virginia, Olivia considers Kansas City her home. She is currently in her third year of graduate
school at KU Med, studying occupational therapy.
ience, and Redemption. My sister encouraged me to read the book and I can’t put it down!
Who is your role model and why? My younger brother Jeff. Always, and no question.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I was once tackled by a mascot on the football field! While I was a cheerleader in college, the mascot knocked me over and I ended up breaking both my arms in front of 80,000 fans.
DAVID ROWE
KATIE MUENKS
This Prairie Village native currently works as a project manager on Kansas City’s Cisco Smart + Connected Communities Initiative.
Katie was born and raised in Parkville and currently resides downtown. She works in finance at Cerner Corp.
Why do you want to help the Ronald McDonald House? The organization helps families in a critical time of need. As a future pediatric occupational therapist, I am aware of how providing a comforting home atmosphere during a time of need can help with the healing and recovery process. What’s your favorite coffee shop? The Myriad House. I like my coffee black! What are you reading right now? Unbroken, A World War II Story of Survival, Resil-
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I was in a Kraft cheese commercial as a little girl.
Why do you want to help the Ronald McDonald House? I worked for a few years for an academic medical center here in town, and saw how impactful the Ronald McDonald House was in our community. I’m proud to work for a cause that’s working for them. What’s your favorite KC destination? Kauffman Stadium and/or First Fridays. Where is your favorite brunch spot? Happy Gillis.
Why do you want to help the Ronald McDonald House? At a young age, my mother instilled in me the idea that “we are charged to help those who cannot help themselves.” I have volunteered and donated to Ronald McDonald house before and believe in what they do. What’s your favorite destination in KC? It’s a three-way tie between Arrowhead Stadium, Kauffman Stadium, and Sporting Park. continued on page 12

What book are you reading right now? I’m re-reading The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, which tells the story of Eddie and five people who illuminate unseen connections of his earthly life after his unexpected passing.
NATHAN CARR Nathan grew up in Clearwater, Kansas, just south of Wichita. He made his way to Kansas City in 2012 and now works as the international ad operations manager for Adknowledge.
Why do you want to help SocialHeart and the Ronald McDonald House? I was very active in the philanthropic community in Wichita. I moved to Kansas City for a job and didn’t really have much of a network here. I was introduced to SocialHeart from a coworker and instantly fell in love with the idea of being able to give back while meeting some awesome, like-minded people.
What’s your favorite destination in KC? The Chinese Art Collection at the Nelson Atkins is my favorite. Followed by Liberty Memorial/Union Station. Where is your favorite brunch spot? Anywhere with a nice patio. I live in West Plaza, so Baked in KC is pretty near and dear to my heart. What book are you reading right now? About six months ago I decided to go back and reread all of the books I was forced to read through middle school and high school. I hated being forced to read them at the time, but it’s pretty interesting to see the stories from my perspective now versus 15. Currently I am on Animal Farm.
JENNA ALLRED This diehard Jayhawks fan grew up in Leawood. She has worked at Morgan Stanley for the last six years.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I used to sing Italian opera. Why do you want to help the Ronald McDonald House? I have become who I
am today because of a strong family so there is no question why I want to help the Ronald McDonald House. By supporting this charity, families can stay strong for one another and be together during their children’s time of need. What book are you reading right now? The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey. Who is your role model and why? My mother. If you ever meet her, you would know why within five minutes. Having a smart, strong woman who pushes me to be better when I need it and reels me back to reality when I get lost is a role model I am lucky to have.

IN FOCUS Giarraputo opened LuLu Salon and Spa 11 years ago. She wanted to show her then-3-year-old daughter, Lila, she had bigger aspirations of success. Graduating at the top of beauty school was not enough for Giarraputo. “I wanted to create a legacy my daughter could be proud of,” she says. “I named the salon after her. This was all for my daughter.” Lila’s nickname is Lulu. As with any small business, daily processes must be done right in order to survive. And several years later, Giarraputo is still making it right by listening to what clients want. In building her salon business, Giarraputo found out what clients wanted in a salon — but she also found out what stylists wanted. “I know that happy stylists produce happy clients,” she explains. “Happy stylists are also productive. I know this because I worked at other salons. I knew what made me happy.” Giarraputo found that salon happiness is in the details. She learned clients do not like to move around with a towel on his or her head — so she put individual sinks at each large station. There is a separate area for beverages and a styling area for someone to freshen up makeup or style their own hair before leaving. Leslie Giarraputo, owner of Lulu Salon and Spa
THE SALON THAT LISTENS: LULU SALON AND SPA BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Jeff Ervard
Hair stylists are good listeners. They have to be when communication is the only way to build trust between a client and a hair stylist.
14
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Leslie Giarraputo (formally Kubas), owner of Lulu Salon and Spa in Overland Park, spends her career listening. She figured out that listening is learning — it’s aspiring for her to build a better salon.
“We’re different because there are no ‘behind-the-scenes’ here,” Giarraputo says. A good professional will teach others what they know. Giarraputo made education a high priority at Lulu Salon and Spa. All stylists are provided with their own storage/counter to mix hair color in front of the clients. The sole purpose of mixing in front of the clients is to educate. “There is no back room with hair-color chemicals,” she explains. “Everything is done right in front of the client. I found there is a great respect for that.”
Amber Kelley is a stylist at Lulu Salon and Spa. She teaches everything she knows to each client. “A lot of times our clients know their formula and they even know when they want something changed in the mix,” she shares.

The only things hair stylists cannot do is make hair grow faster or thicker. It’s a common complaint. Unfortunately, chemicals can’t do it. There is no magic wand.
“ We’re different because there are no ‘ behind-the-scenes’ here … Every thing is done right in front of the client. I found there is a great respect for that.” — Leslie Giarraputo Traditional extensions are not always the answer for individuals with fine or thin hair. To find her fine-haired clients a solution, Giarraputo went on a search. Each stylists’ station includes its own sink to ensure clients’ comfort.
She found Halocouture Temporary Hair Extensions. There are no clips to attach onto the natural hair, so there is no damage to the natural hair. The Halo is placed around the crown of the head and the natural hair is pulled out and over with a comb. The Halo can be pulled on and off at home. The Halo, starting at $300 for 12 inches of hair, is custom-ordered to match the client’s hair color. It’s made with 100-percent human hair so the Halo can be washed and styled like natural hair. “This is the highest quality of hair I have seen,” Giarraputo says. “I have been working with extensions my whole career. It will last years. Each Halo is also custom cut to blend naturally with the client’s natural hair. We make sure our clients know how to apply and remove the Halo before they go home with it.” When Lulu Salon and Spa opened, networking with other beauty professionals was difficult. “For a long time, I never knew what was going on in other salons in the area,” she explains. “So I created a private Facebook group for Kansas City beauty professionals. It’s a place for all of us to network and continue to learn as an industry.”

APP OF THE MONTH ALL YOUR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS IN ONE PLACE The gist: Staying organized every day is hard enough. But when you’re try-
ing to juggle life, work, and kids, all while planning a vacation, things can get a little chaotic. The good news is that there’s an app that will keep all your itineraries in one spot, so you never again will have to search through hundreds of emails for that confirmation number. TripIt won’t suggest destinations or help you fill your days, but it does offer a complete, hassle-free way to combine all travel-related information (flight confirmations, itineraries, tickets, hotel bookings, rental car reservations, etc.) into one simple view. Plus, it gives you directions and maps for each destination, allows you to sync plans with Google Calendar and Outlook, and lets you share trip plans with others. You also can view everything across all devices.
The cons: The free app contains ads; you must pay $0.99 for an ad-free version. Android users also have been reporting that the app freezes since the last update.
NEW CLIENT SPECIAL! 3 Private Pilates Reformer and Equipment Sessions for just $199! Personal Best clients receive the BEST results, because they get the BEST Pilates instruction. It also provides great resistance for toning muscles in your arms as well by moving your arms back and forth in the water as you cross the pool. Another fun option is water aerobics. Traveling With Pets: Should They Stay or Should They Go?

Kalmar pleads. • “ Most cats are really homebodies,” she notes, so check whether they can ride in a crate before you decide to take them with you.
AIR TRAVEL SUGGESTIONS • Check your air carrier’s website for any health certificates they may require as well as policies for both pets that travel inside the cabin and seasonal restrictions for pets traveling in the cargo hold. In either case, it will be necessary for the animal to be crate-trained ahead of time. • For animals traveling in the cargo area, carriers may require food to be available in case of an extended delay. Dr. Kalmar suggests securely attaching dry food in a zip-lock bag to the top of the animal’s crate. To safeguard against dehydration, place frozen water in one of the crate’s snap-in cups. The water can melt slowly over time and not spill. • D r. Kalmar strongly discourages sedatives for animals traveling by air, explaining that flying at an altitude may adversely interact with the medication.

THE GREAT BEE DECLINE … AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT Out of every bite of food we take, bees are responsible for one-third of them. Without their ability to pollinate and keep plants growing, everything from grains to livestock to fruits and veggies would take a massive decline. Those little guys are far more important than they’re given credit for. Yet, since 2007, their populations have been

“We just keep getting bigger and more pow-
root and hold,” Fetchenhier says.
7 WAYS YOU CAN HELP SAVE THE BEE POPULATION 1. PLANT BEE-FRIENDLY PLANTS. More than 500
native bee species reside in the Kansas City area. (The honeybee as we know it today was brought over from England.) They help pollinate and foster all types of plants, which they also need to survive. In order to keep them nutritious and fed, plant coneflowers, sunflowers, sage, milkweed and maple and willow trees. When in doubt, opt for native plants; bees are used to those species, Fetchenhier says.
2. KNOW THE FACTS. Did you know that sweat bees
don’t land to sting? They land to get nutrients from our sweat. Or that bee swarms are actually a healthy show of instincts? They are safe for humans, unless interrupted. By knowing these and other facts, we can help support the bee population, rather than hurt it. Misko says, in the event of a swarm, contact your local beekeeper’s association (found with a quick Google search, though Midwestern supports the KC area) for safe removal.
3. MINE HONEY WITH CARE. Those wanting to start
keeping bees for honey should know there’s a lot of education involved. Learning from the experts can help you save your bees, and save plenty of money down the road. “I could have saved so many bees if I would have had the education,” Misko says of her earlier days. Now in her 26th year as “the bee lady,” it’s her goal to educate newcomers with science-proven tactics and tips.
4. MAKE BEE HOMES. Not all bees live in hives. Many
live in trees, branches, slats of wood, or other areas that might exist near your home. Fetchenhier says short bamboo sticks are perfect for bees. At Powell Gardens, she demonstrates how to cut and hang them from trees to create bee nests, which allows bees to lay eggs and increase their population.
5. SUPPORT LOCAL BEEKEEPERS. Consider talk-
ing to beekeepers at the farmers market or making a donation. With the information they hold, beekeepers can (and should) be your best friend! Citizens can follow legislation, and even get the downlow on local honey and how it can help cure seasonal allergies.
6. AVOID PESTICIDES. Those pesticides ingested by
plants are the worst of them all, basically creating an entire hub of bee poison. Other chemicals, such as Sevin, can be extremely toxic to bees and other pollinators. Check with local experts to find blends that are bee-friendly, or choose natural pest-removal options instead.
7. JOIN THE CAUSE. Even if you’re not ready to start a
bee population of your own, there are several ways to help. Get online and join a bee support group (these do anything from volunteer clean-up to planting a flower in your yard), or visit Powell Gardens and listen to one of Fetchenhier’s talks on bees. Or, head to midwesternbeekeepers.org for more information on your native bee population.

To ‘ Poo or Not to ‘ Poo I am not going to lie, this whole “no ’poo” movement has me totally intrigued. Cutting the Cable Cord: Can You Do It? BY BRIDGET MASON HESS
Are you tired of paying for hundreds of TV channels you never watch? Have you thought about canceling cable and looking for a more frugal or flexible way to watch TV? More and more people are cutting the cable cord and opting for streaming services. It helps that the TV viewing options available to us are growing — a sharp contrast to the days when we watched the clock so we didn’t miss the start of a favorite show.
34
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
Here are a few things to think about if you are considering cutting the cord: • I f you plan to watch TV through streaming services, you will need a reliable highspeed Internet connection. Remember that if there is an interruption in your Internet connection, you’ll also lose access to those services. You also may want to use an HDTV antenna to access live network channels in high definition. (Don’t worry; today’s antennas are not the tall “rabbit ears” our parents’ TVs used.) • While you could save as much as $100 a month not paying for cable, you may still want to buy other services a la carte. Keep this in mind to determine your actual savings.
• What do you watch on TV? Are there ways to access the shows you like without cable? Products such as Netflx, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Sling TV — just a few services in this growing market — all offer alternatives to cable. These services usually allow you to try what they have to offer at a low price without the commitment of a contract, so you can cancel if you don’t like it. • Who in your household is watching TV and when? Some streaming services may limit the number of users who can access an account at once. If you have several TV watchers with different preferences in your home, this may pose a problem. • If you’re an avid sports fan, the cable company may hold onto you as a cus-
tomer a little longer. Give some thought to the games you watch and where they usually air — on the major networks or on ESPN? Are you concerned only with local games, or are you intent on keeping tabs on a favorite team across the country? •R emember the DVR. Without a DVR, there may be times you want to be able to record and store shows to watch later. There are products available that allow you to do this without a cable subscription, such as TiVo. This may not be a deal breaker for you if most of what you watch will be via on-demand services such as Netflix anyway, but this is another a la carte cost should you want it.
My family is a case study in living cable-free;

PARENTING
BY HODDY POTTER
Sorting Out Sibling Rivalry Cinderella and her wicked step sisters. Mary and Anne Boleyn. Cain and Abel. What do these three groups have in common? They are each examples of sibling rivalries. Though your child might not attempt to foil the plans of her step-sister to go to a royal ball, most parents of multiple children will have to deal with a sibling rivalry at some point. Sibling rivalries can occur for an infinite number of reasons. Sometimes, misguided parents attempt to motivate their children and inadvertently put too much pressure on their kids to emulate a more successful sibling. (“You simply have to get into Harvard like your older brother.”) This can set up a rivalry where children vie for parental affection, accolades, and acceptance. Other times, a rivalry can occur because one child is sick or has special needs that require more parental attention. Siblings might realize this reality and misbehave to get attention. Sometimes natural tensions occur because of the place and gender of the child. Girls might resent their brothers for having less stringent curfews or older siblings may resent their increased responsibilities such as household chores and babysitting. Sibling rivalry is not 100 percent negative, however. “Sibling rivalry can be beneficial if handled appropriately,” says Allison Hettinger, pediatrician at Preferred Pediatrics in Overland Park and Olathe. “Healthy competition can push kids out of their comfort zones to reach new goals.” Sometimes

seeing an older sibling accomplish a goal — for example, riding a bike without training wheels — will motivate the other child to want to do the same. In addition, rivalry can teach children important life lessons, such as how to communicate, compromise, and respect other people’s perspectives and successes. However, as most parents have experienced firsthand, untamed rivalry can turn ugly quickly. “Sibling rivalry can be a great source of anxiety and depression in children, mostly pre-teens and teens,” Dr. Hettinger says. “Parents can work to overcome this by providing reassurance and guidance.” Aside from telling all of your children they are loved for who they are as individuals, parents

Recognize each child’s unique accomplishments. “One sibling may be a great athlete while the other is gifted artistically or academically. Highlighting each sibling’s individual strengths and allowing them opportunities to experiment in different activities can alleviate some stress,” Dr. Hettinger explains.
paintglazeandfire.net 127th & Metcalf • Overland Park, KS
Avoid vocalizing comparisons to a brother or sister. “This can also ease the sting to a sibling who may be less successful in a particular area,” Dr. Hettinger says. (“Your sister was so much better at riding her bike at this age.”) Most everyone resents being evaluated only in relation to someone else. Instead, focus on the child’s unique measuring stick. (“You have improved so much from last week.”) This will help the child feel like he or she is not in the sibling’s shadow.
Every treatment is safe, effective & educational. NEW EXCLUSIVE
Focus on a team approach. Constantly communicate with your family that the family is a team. Children who feel as if they are working toward a shared goal — for example, a family trip to the zoo or the ability to stay up late on a Saturday night — are less likely to act like opponents. Set up opportunities for the children to work together on a large-scale project, such as washing the family car or building a snowman, and then praise the teamwork. This can help ease tensions and show children that spending time as a family is fun. While it’s likely impossible for parents to completely eliminate sibling rivalry from their parenting journey, following the steps outlined above will hopefully keep a child’s inner wicked stepsister from making frequent appearances at your home.

tools we use every day at work or in our personal lives can cause huge amounts of damage. We’re talking about electronics. Items such as computers, TVs, and mobile phones are beginning to load up our landfills. However, the disposal of these electronics is making the largest environmental impact we’ve seen in recent years. Every electronic device we use is packed with toxic chemicals, including lead, arsenic, and mercury. These toxins are now being spread into our environment. Companies like AT&T have been slammed hard for improperly disposing electronics. Recently, AT&T was fined $52 million for discarding electronics in a regular landfill. So what’s the answer? Easy: recycling. Millions of phones are thrown away each year due to rapid updates in technology. Yet, millions of people around the world don’t have phones. There are plenty of places you can take electronics to be refurbished and reused. Try the Surplus Exchange in the West Bottoms. Even places like Best Buy and Costco have programs where you can bring old electronics to be refurbished. We don’t have to let technology be the enemy. Instead, we can and should view it as a beneficial resource for recycling and recoverable materials.

Digging up Roots It started with a curiosity. Maybe I am a descendent of Aztec royalty. Does my kids’ artwork possess the artistic talent of Diego Rivera? Or maybe my ancestors invented tequila. I wanted to find out.

With the help of my mom and grandma, I started my family tree. I filled in what I knew of names, birthdates, and death dates. It was my great-grandma Timotea’s family line that drew me in. She died in 2008 at 100 years old. Her longevity filled my childhood, teenage years, and the majority of my 20s with memories of her. I clicked my way through census records of her living in the U.S. Then I got stuck at the border.
My mom is Mexican and my dad is Caucasian. I knew at a young

the tip of the iceberg.” Here are her tips for starting a family tree:
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
1. START WITH YOURSELF.
Don’t start with a
family rumor that you are related to Jesse James and begin at Jesse James’ tree. Start with yourself and take the direct line up. Distant aunts, uncles, and cousins provide clues to your direct line; they do not make up your direct lineage.
2. BUILD YOUR TREE. This can be on paper or online. You can find software programs available for purchase online, but there are also many free family trees provided at sites such as Ancestry.com. Sourcing is important. Find birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage licenses and document them.
3. INTERVIEW YOUR FAMILY. Ask your oldest living direct family member to tell you about their grandparents. This will help you add at least four generations of clues to your research. Recording your oldest living family member telling stories about relatives is vital to genealogy research. It preserves their voice and mannerisms for future generations to see and hear. Coming across photos of passed ones are icing on the cake.
4. RESEARCH TO FILL IN THE HOLES. There is a world of clues out there. Researching online is a great place to start, but it’s not the only place. The courthouses, the National Archives at Kansas City, Missouri, and public libraries are great resources if you know what you are looking for. History also will play a

role in research — the events going on in this country, or even other countries, shaped how our ancestors lived.
5. FOCUS.
Take one family line and stay there. You can’t
trace 10 family lines at the same time. The easiest way to stay focused is to follow one person and their direct lineage back.
6. HAVE FUN. Murderers. Convicts. Tequila-makers. Royalty. You may come across skeletons in your family. But you also may find you are related to one of the presidents of the U.S. “Everyone has a story,” Lang says. “I don’t care who you are. It’s whether

you’re interested enough to find those stories.” With Lang’s help, I was directed to the free genealogy website, familysearch.org. The website is run by the Mormons, a religious group that believes in an eternal family. For centuries, Mormons have gone into countries and asked for copies of church records to help others find their ancestors. The result is a large database for genealogy research. It worked in my favor. Catholicism is the dominant religion in Mexico, and their baptism records can be found on familysearch.org.

Next, I asked my grandma how much she remembered of her grandparents. Putting together my grandma’s memories and sourcing names with baptisms, I found my great grandma Timotea’s family in Zacatecas, Mexico. I kept digging. My great grandma Timotea’s grandfather died in Mexico. But his place of birth — Spain.

This is one of the easiest and best summer desserts you can make. In fact, if you took a shortcut and bought the graham cracker crust at the store, you wouldn’t even have to turn on the oven. I, however, am a sucker for a thick, homemade graham cracker crust, so I made it — but you don’t have to. Tart and tangy, with a creamy finish — this is the perfect dessert for a summer picnic or potluck. No one will even know it only took you a few minutes!

Luscious Lemon Icebox Pie Makes one pie
Ingredients
Directions
For the crust 2 cups graham cracker crumbs (about 2 crushed cracker sleeves) 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 1/4 cup granulated sugar
To make the crust, preheat the oven to 350°. Combine graham cracker crumbs, butter, and sugar in a medium bowl, stirring until moistened. Press the mixture on the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Let the crust cool completely.
For the filling 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 10 ounces prepared lemon curd (I used Trader Joe’s – $2.99) 1-1/2 cups heavy cream
To make the filling, mix the cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar until combined. Mix in the lemon curd. In another bowl, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold whipped cream into lemon cream cheese mixture. Pour the filling into the baked crust. Refrigerate 8 hours or overnight before serving. Serve chilled.

Splash your heart out at Kansas City’s oldest water park, which offers 60 acres of water slides and soaking rides. In 2013, the park expanded with six new ones, the most notable being Predators’ Plunge. The bottom drops out from underneath your feet, sending you on a nearvertical water slide drop.
Catch a wave and master the art of surfing at this South Kansas City, Missouri, park. The surfing simulator is a big draw, but the park also features several slides, including The Spinner, which starts as a water slide that then spits you into a large bowl from which you are “flushed” down. There’s also a lazy river, kid-controlled sprays and fountains, a huge dumping bucket, and more.
Great Wolf Lodge at the Legends is always a balmy 84 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the perfect park for not-so-perfect weather. The resort’s 38,000-square-foot indoor waterpark offers eight water slides, three pools, a lazy river, and a four-story treehouse water fort.

This water park boasts 26 acres of water coasts, tubing rivers, gigantic slides, relaxing beach areas, a giant hot tub, plenty of kids play areas, and more. Of course, Schlitterbahn put Kansas City on the map last year when the park unveiled the Verruckt, the tallest water slide in the world. Do you have the guts to go down its 168-foot slide?
Located in Raytown, Missouri, Super Splash USA boasts quite a few fun features, including three slides. Compete with friends in the water wars game or hang out at Catalina Cove. For the younger ones, Pebble Beach, with its colorful fountains and toys, will delight.
You don’t have to be a guest at the Holiday Inn to which CoCo Key Water Resort is attached. With nearly 1,000 feet of slides, CoCo Key is fun for the entire family. Looking for thrills? Try one of the five-story slides. Want to relax? The lazy river is perfect for you.
You’ll have a splashing great time at this aquatic center in Olathe. Black Bob Bay features raft water slides, a lazy river, shallow-water play structures with a tipping bucket and zero-depth entry, in addition to its diving boards, 50-meter pool, and toddler area.
