WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR

MOVING ON real estate chaos, we learned a few things about buying and selling and made some astute observations about human nature from the 50+ families who trampled through our home. Behold our lessons learned. For sellers, you need at least three places to hide things quickly. The oven was my first line of defense; it was a natural fit for kitchen clutter. I had a giant bread basket and would throw everything in it — bread, too-ripe bananas, homework, random bills, and yes — I even threw my 2-year-old’s dirty socks in there once. Desperation knows no sanitary bounds when you have to be out of the house in five minutes flat. “Halle-freakin’-lujah, WE SOLD THE HOUSE!” That was a direct quote from me to my husband a few weeks ago when, after 87 days of maniacal frenzy and compulsive clutter-managing, we accepted an offer on our home. Nearly three months. Seems like an eternity, right? But when you add three kids, an ornery dog, and parents who work from home in the mix, the basic equation becomes a jumbled calculus-like formula in which the ultimate output is divorce or incarceration — take your pick. Luckily, we’ve emerged with the familial unit intact (though I may never live down the time I made us eat out for 10 days straight because I couldn’t bear to mess up the clean kitchen) and are moving on to greener pastures. During our short time in

6

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

(There was also that time I turned the oven on after we got home, and filled the house with the aroma of melted plastic, charred KCPL bills, and hot dirty socks. Good times.) The dryer was my favorite hiding place. Dark and enclosed … Perfect for so many random items. Extra rolls of toilet paper from the 400-pack you just purchased? Dryer. Tax forms that need to be filed away? Dryer. Huge tub of animal crackers that won’t fit on any shelf in the entire house? Dryer. But our most-used hiding place was actually the trunk of my car. When you have a real estate Code Blue (otherwise known as someone calling from their cell phone who happens to be “just out front” wondering if they can “pop in for a look”) and need to shovel out the clutter in 30 seconds or less,

the trunk is the only solution. For 87 days it was the emergency “junk drawer” of our home. We also learned some interesting things about buyers: 90 percent of the buyers who came through our home were seemingly normal. The other 10 percent were just plain weird. Once we came home to find the comforter on our bed with two distinct full-body indentations on it — as if a couple had lain there on our bed talking for a while. But the most unexpected part of the selling process was not the crazies who trampled through our home, or even the crazy I unleashed on my family trying to keep the house perfect. The sucker punch I didn’t see coming hit right after I screamed the words “Halle-freakin’-lujah, WE SOLD THE HOUSE!” I paused briefly and felt a knot in the pit of my stomach. It hit me we had really sold the house we’d painstakingly renovated. We had sold the house we’d moved into as a family of four. We had sold the house where we’d had our last baby, completing our family of five. We had sold the house where we’d made a million perfect memories. Bittersweet. Maybe I’ll hide a little remembrance of us in the dryer.

AROUND TOWN

A ROYAL HEARTTHROB: AN INTERVIEW WITH ERIC HOSMER Eric Hosmer has captured the attention of Kansas City — from the Little Leaguers wearing “the Hoz” to the women at the Power and Light District, and not to mention, baseball fans in general. We pulled Eric aside as our next Kansas City sports athlete feature, because who hasn’t fallen in love with him? There is not a kid in Little League who doesn’t look up to you. And they all want your haircut; they have nicknamed your hairstyle “The Hoz.” The boys want to know — where do you get your haircut? It started out originally that all the rookies had to get mohawks and I just kept it going from there. I go to a barber at the Purple Label Barber Shop in Overland Park. It’s crazy seeing the kids wearing my hairstyle. I love it. How did it feel the first time you saw a kid wearing a Royals jersey with your name on the back? Everyone’s dream is to make it to the big leagues. Just being here is an unbelievable accomplishment. Seeing people wear my jersey or the hair thing — even in other ballparks — just

shows they respect me as a player. It’s special. It really is. Which Major League Baseball team was your favorite growing up? The Miami Marlins and the New York Yankees. I grew up watching the Marlins because they are my hometown team. But my dad is from New York so we would go up to New York and watch Yankee games. Honestly, the big ball in New York was a little more recognized than Miami back in the day. Being able to see a full stadium and the whole atmosphere in New York, I really became accustomed to being a Yankees fan. Who is your role model and why? My younger brother Jeff. Always, and no question. Did you attend any Yankees or Marlins World Series games growing up? Yes! In 1997, I went to game seven of the World Series to watch the Marlins. And actually, I was sitting in right field and a couple sections away from Bobby Bonilla’s big home run in the seventh inning. That was pretty cool to be able to see that.

Do you have a favorite MLB player of all time? Someone you look up to? Derek Jeter and Ken Griffey Jr. It’s a tie between those. I think every kid practices their signature when they’re young. Does your signature look anything like you practiced? Yeah, I definitely did that. I just remember being told it’s got to be messy so they can’t read your name. My mom always has a fancy line at the end of hers and I tried to incorporate something like that into mine when I was younger. It’s pretty sloppy now. At what point in your childhood did you think you had a chance to play professionally? Well, it’s always been a dream, but I would say early into high school when I started getting letters from colleges saying that they wanted me to attend their schools’ baseball camps. That’s when it started to be a reality in my mind that I could get my college paid for and one day become a professional player. Your parents were heavily involved in

your baseball career from the beginning. Do you think they also saw professional talent? That’s a good question. I was fortunate enough for them to provide me with every opportunity possible to fulfill my dream, whether it was just my mom traveling with me to play a tournament or my dad having to work extra days so we would have the money for a camp. I don’t really know if they knew what professional talent was, but they definitely gave me every opportunity possible and I’m very fortunate for that. Did you get upset whenever you lost a game, growing up? I did. And I think that’s what helped me professionally. I played on the same Little League team with the same group of guys until we were about 10 years old. If we lost a game, no one would talk to anyone right after. It would even carry over into school the next day. Just being real competitive as a team has helped me stay competitive as a player in professional ball today. Besides your big-league debut, when have you been most nervous as an MLB player? I would say last year in the World Series. Just the first inning though.

And the Wildcard game, also. When the first ground ball hit the ground during the first Wildcard game: As a first baseman you’re supposed to underhand flip the ball back to the pitcher. I feel like the ball shot out of my hand at 100 mph on that first play. After that, I could settle in and just relax. And then at the World Series, when you actually realize what’s going on, what stage you’re on. It’s the furthest you can take your goal as a baseball player. I definitely had butterflies. What do you do during the off-season? I go back to Florida. The first couple weeks you just rest your body after a long season. I get off my feet and clear my mind. After that, I try to get a workout in every day and see family. The off-season isn’t really long with spring training and stuff like that, so I try to catch up with people at home. I also like traveling a lot. I like changing up the scenery quite a bit. When I have one of those rare weekends where I don’t have any workouts or anything, I try to travel and get the experience of seeing different parts of the country.

And where is your favorite place you have traveled to? Atlantis, in the Bahamas, is a fun place. It’s a little resort I’ve been to a couple times. It’s a nice vacation. I get to leave all my personal life and put business aside and just enjoy the beach. You grew up in South Florida and your mom is from Cuba. How does Latin food stack up against Kansas City BBQ? They are both very, very good, but Latin food is something I grew up eating. We would go to my grandmother’s house for meals. She is just an unbelievable cook. We would eat tons and tons of Latin food — pork and rice and beans. Every time I go back home, it’s something I look forward to — all the home-cooked Latin meals. OK, but you must have a favorite KC BBQ joint? Which one is it? Joe’s Kansas City BBQ is my favorite. We get it a lot at the stadium. That Z Man sandwich. That has to be a favorite for everyone! Which one celebrity would you like to meet? Tough one! I’d say growing up, it was Derek Jeter. But I’ve met him. I would say now it would be Floyd Mayweather. I respect continued on page 12

how confident he is and his work ethic. He works so hard at his craft. I think it’s something all athletes look up to. His mentality is really impressive.

Where do you keep your two Gold Glove Awards? At home, I have a hall of fame room. I have framed jerseys and awards I am fortunate enough to win.

What do you do to pass the time while on the road? We play cards. Someone is always pulling out a deck of cards on the plane, hotel room, or even in the clubhouse during rain delays. That’s the one thing baseball players go back to — we’re always playing card games. My favorite game is spades.

What is your best experience at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City? I would say watching the groups of kids come out on the field to watch batting practice. I like watching the kids’ faces as they take that first step on the field and just look around to see what it’s like to stand on a big league field. I know it’s something those kids will never forget. I know I never forgot the first time. It’s the best feeling for me.

What do you talk about to the opposing players at first base? There are a lot of things but, believe it or not, a lot of guys don’t know the pickup signs from the third-base coach. So a lot of times, their first-base coach has to help them out. I try to get into the conversations as much as I can so I can figure out if someone is going to steal a base. I want to know their strategy. What was your first big purchase with the first big paycheck? My first big purchase was a watch. It was in Arizona. Moose actually took me to the mall and yeah, I bought a watch.

throws would make it tough at bat. Who would win an arm wrestling competition on the team? I would say Alex Gordon. He spends the most time in the weight room. He’s a beast. OK last question. You do know you’re Kansas City’s heartthrob, right? (Laughs) Thank you. (Laughs again) But am I?

If you were not first baseman, what position would you want to be? Pitcher. I would love to stand on the mound. I want to see how fast my fastball would be on the radar gun. I think every ball player would want to take a chance at being pitcher. Which current Royals pitcher would you least want to face if you were on the opposing team? Wade Davis. He’s really become one of the best pitchers in baseball. Just watching the type of movement his pitches have and how hard he

comfortable, fun, and safe time for your furry family member. The Humane Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) both offer helpful tips for caring for your dogs this summer. Some of these are common sense, but the others might be things you would never think of. For example, everyone knows you should never leave your dog inside a vehicle, even if you are making a quick stop at a store. You also should make sure your pup always has access to unlimited fresh water and shade while outside. And, if your dog sports a heavy coat, clip it to help your furry friend cool down. If you think it is hot outside, the AVMA says it will be even hotter for your dog. So give your pup frequent breaks and bring water along on walks. Or, take those walks during the cooler hours of the day. (Both you and Fido will benefit!) Also try to stay off hot surfaces — such as asphalt — during your walks, the AVMA says, because it can burn your dog’s paws. One thing you might not consider, however, is sunscreen for your dog. IN FOCUS years ago,” Cheatham admits. Lingner is quick to qualify that statement by adding, “She never had the desire to own a traditional salon!” BluSky Salon Suites is an upscale salon and spa dedicated to providing an independent working environment for stylists who wish to run their own business. The salon, which opened in mid-June, is currently looking for additional team members including stylists, estheticians, massage therapists, and nail techs. Within BluSky Salon Suites are 22 individual suites — 20 singles and two doubles — with space enough to accommodate 24 stylists. Cheatham explains that double suites are ideal for friends or business partners who prefer the “open salon” feel and would like to work together. Two additional treatment rooms are designed for an esthetician or massage therapist. Each stylist’s spacious salon area is equipped with European shampoo bowls, cabinetry, a central vac system, and moving “roll-about” working stations. A washer and dryer are also provided for the stylists use to use without charge.

Diana Cheatham and Jamie Lingner opened BluSky Salon Suites, boasting a spa-like atmosphere, this summer.

BLUSKY SALON SUITES: A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN, RIGHT HERE IN LEAWOOD BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Jeff Ervard

When I hear the words “blue sky” I cannot help but think of heaven. And a little bit of heaven is just what owners Diana Cheatham and Jamie Lingner have created for stylists at BluSky Salon Suites in Leawood. 14

BluSky team members can opt for month-to-month or f lexible yearly contracts that are compatible with the individual stylist’s goals, personal schedule, and family needs. Cheatham points out the f lexibility to choose one option over the other allows each stylist to run his or her own business the way that works best. Although not required, one-year lease agreements do offer some perks, including the first week’s rent free and one free vacation week per year. “Everybody is really their own boss here,” Cheatham says, adding that each stylist is individually licensed by the state and has the freedom to name his or her own business (a “salon within a

salon,” so to speak). The stylists have their own clientele and set their own hours. They also can sell the products they use and recommend, or even sell their own line of products if they have one and choose to do so.

Twelve of the suites have 10-foot windows with exterior views that provide abundant natural light. Not only is BluSky a heavenly environment for stylists, clients will appreciate a number of features that have been designed to enhance their experience as well. Both Cheatham and Lingner, each with multiple years of experience, continue to work as active stylists. “The environment at BluSky Salon has given me a renewed love for my job,” Lingner shares. “I think the right move can do that for a stylist. My goal is for this place to be a ‘safe haven’ for stylists, so they can run their own business and not be micromanaged.” Cheatham’s goals echo those of her daughter. “People sometimes forget to treat one another with respect, which is important in any business,” she says. “The salon we built is our vision of the perfect salon. Just like in the Field of Dreams movie — ‘build it and they shall come.’ I hope others will think it’s their perfect salon, too.” BluSky Salon Suites is located in Leawood at 5051 W. 134th St., near 135th and Briar Drive, just west of Parkway Plaza. APP OF THE MONTH SEND POSTCARDS FROM ANYWHERE, ANYTIME The gist: In the age of email, it’s nice to get a real note from a loved one ev-

ery once in a while. Sending those notes has gotten so much easier, thanks to the Touchnote smartphone app. Touchnote lets you create a postcard or greeting card using your photos, which it then prints and mails for you. The app is super easy to use. Simply choose the picture you’d like, reposition it or zoom in, enter the recipient’s address (which is then saved for future cards), type out a quick note and send it off. Touchnote started out as a desktop application, but the mobile app makes it easy to share a postcard (or greeting card) from any location. Cards cost $1.49 each (less if you buy in bulk), and arrive within two to five working days in the U.S.

The cons: The iOS and Android version are slightly different. For example, while

the iPhone app allows you to add a caption to your photo and change the layout, the Android version does not yet allow this. The Android version also puts a white border on all postcards. BY JULIE BURTON

Cracking Open the Coconut Coconuts — the sweet smell of summer. And autumn, winter, and spring. There’s a coconut craze going on and it’s showing up in places beyond the bottle of sunscreen. The coconut and its many forms have found homes in pantries, our food, and our bodies. And there’s good reason — fat. What was once deemed the villain of the fruit world, the coconut has almost 90 percent saturated fat. To put it simply, it was the animal fat hidden in the plant world. People feared it.

Nutritionists and health care professionals are discovering that not all saturated fats are created equal. “There has been a shift in understanding how saturated fats work,” says Brooke Seiz, nutritional health coach at Natural Grocers in Overland Park. “We need saturated fat in our diets. We need these good fats. The coconut’s fat provides us with energy, immune support, and brain power.” But what makes drinking a glass of coconut milk different than eating a steak? Lauric acid, also called medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Almost half of the fat content in the coconut contains a fatty acid rarely found in nature called lauric acid. Lauric acid has a neutral effect on heart health when compared to meats and dairy products. Studies have shown that the coconut doesn’t put a strain on the heart as doctors once feared. Even better, coconut oil — dense with saturated fat — contains additional properties that shoot the coconut into “superfood” status:

IT GIVES US ENERGY. Our bodies easily metabolize lauric acid. And there is less strain put on our digestive system. We don’t store the fatty acids in fat cells; they are used to produce energy. “Coconut oil produces energy in the body in almost the same way as carbohydrates, but coconut oil doesn’t spike up the blood sugar like glucose,” Seiz explains. “It’s great for people with blood sugar imbalances.”

IT BOOSTS OUR BRAIN POWER . Research suggests that ketones (energy) from coconut oil support the regrowth of brain cells. The fatty acids in the coconut reduce the plaques that form in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), epilepsy, and autism.

IT HELPS OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. Once the body absorbs lauric acid, it then produces monolaurin, an antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial compound. This compound is similar to the immunity found in human breast milk. Coconut oil also contains antioxidants that may help knock out cell-damaging free radicals that are thought to cause aging. Rubbing coconut oil directly on the skin is naturally a great moisturizer. For years the coconut was synonymous with sunscreen and summer. As the secrets inside the coconut are being discovered, the fruit once labeled “too high in saturated fat” just got put into hot demand year-round.

4 TYPES OF COCONUT PRODUCTS As the research mounts on the health benefits of the coconut, new forms of it are showing up on our shelves. Each has its own benefits:

1. COCONUT OIL Sold in solid form, coconut oil contains the highest amount of fat. It can tolerate high temperatures well when cooking, making it a suitable substitute for butter or other vegetable oils. People also have been using coconut oil for a process called “oil pulling,” in which you swish a table-spoon of oil in your mouth for 10 to 20 minutes

:

before spitting it out. The theory is the coconut oil will rid your body of toxins, primarily in the mouth. “I tried it and my teeth did feel cleaner,” Seiz says. “But there is no medical evidence to suggest your body will rid all toxins.

2. COCONUT MILK This is made from grated meat — the white part — of the coconut. The meat is soaked in hot water then filtered, and is sold in cans. Because coconut milk contains higher amounts of fat, it can easily be substituted for dairy products.

3. COCONUT WATER This is the liquid inside a young (green) coconut. It contains more potassium than four bananas. It is some-

times referred as “mother nature’s sports drink” because of its easily digested carbohydrates and electrolytes. Coconut water is available pasteurized and unpasteurized (raw). The pasteurization may cause loss of nutrients but the shelf life is longer than the raw version.

4. COCONUT FLOUR Ground into a fine powder from dried coconut meat, this is a great source of fiber. But it is different than traditional flours. It can be substituted for 10 percent to 20 percent of wheat flour. Some recipes specifically call for coconut flour, which provides a light crumbliness to baked goods.

AGING WELL

BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE

Full House: Easing the Transition When Elderly Parents Move In One of the highlights of my week is having coffee with my mom on Saturday mornings. The fact that she lives in Arizona is a minor inconvenience but we manage on the phone just fine. Sure, I wish we lived closer to one another. That said, I’m thankful that — at 83 years young — she’s still able to live in her own home.

Very likely, there will come a day when the distance between us will create greater challenges than coordinating our coffee-laden marathon phone calls. And I dread that day. What will happen if she becomes ill or injured and — gulp — can no longer live alone in her home? How can I be there for her when I can’t be there? When elderly parents are no longer able to live by themselves, weighing the options is no small task. So as not to overwhelm ourselves here (OK, me) let’s look at just one of those options: moving Mom or Dad into your home. A recent AARP study shows the number of multigenerational households has jumped in the last two years, from 6.2 million to 7.1 million. This is a faster growth rate than the previous eight years combined. Moving a parent in with you requires planning ahead. You must consider many things before deciding if this is the best option, not only for your parent(s) but for you and your family. For example: • Will your mom or dad need assistance or supervision? • If so, how much are you able to provide? • Do you have the time available to take on this challenge? If additional caretaking is required on your part, ask yourself: • Are you able to adjust your hours of employment outside the home? • Can you afford the decrease in income or is your family member able to pitch in financially? • If you need to hire a caregiver for at least some of the time, where’s the best place to look for help and how much is it going to cost? You also need to examine whether your home is senior-friendly. If it isn’t, are you able to afford any remodeling or renovations needed to make it so? In addition to the physical aspects of your parent’s new living situation, will your older relative have a social network available? A huge consideration is the relationship you have with the parent who is moving in with you: • Do you get along well? • What type of boundaries will you put into place? • What are your expectations while they are living in your home? • Will Mom or Dad be willing to live by your rules?

28

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Diana Cheatham 913-485-7202 Equally as important as the relationship you have with your parent — if not more so — is the impact this new living situation will have on your own family. Moving a parent in with you changes the family dynamic. Jody Gastfriend, vice president of care management at Care. com and licensed independent clinical social worker, points out that family caregivers should beware making a frail elder the focus of attention, ignoring a spouse or children:

J amie Lingner 913-980-1142

FRESH AIR, FRESH STYLES.

• How does your spouse feel about this? • Are there children currently living in the home? • If so, how will this arrangement affect them? • Will you and your family be able to adjust to the lifestyle changes involved in having an older adult in the house? David Horgan, co-author of When Your Parent Moves In, says: “You can’t treat an elder like a house guest, always putting on ‘company manners.’ At the same time, you’ve got to preserve the core family’s unity while not making your parent feel useless or invisible. It’s a delicate balancing act.”

IN FOCUS joyable she credits those early experiences as being part of the reason she decided, at a very young age, to become a dentist herself. Dr. Olson grew up on a farm in Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. After dental school she spent four years in the U.S. Army, including a 15-month deployment to Iraq. When her commitment to the Army was over, Dr. Olson gained additional experience at several offices in other states before returning to the Midwest. In January 2014, Dr. Olson opened Quivira Park Family Dentistry, realizing her longterm goal of having her own practice.

Dr. Michelle Olson (at top right) and her staff enjoy getting to know patients and aim to provide consistent, high-quality dental care.

Quivira Park Family Dentistry welcomes patients of all ages, from young kids to the elderly, and both the office and the parking are handicapaccessible. The goal here is to make dentistry simple and understandable in a comfortable, relaxing, and open atmosphere in which patients don’t feel apprehensive about coming to the office or asking questions. While Dr. Olson and her staff strive to make coming to the dentist enjoyable for all their patients, they feel it’s especially important for kids to have a good experience when they come to the office and don’t want it to be a place they are scared of. Dr. Olson says she seeks to create the same type of long-term, trusting relationships with her patients that she had with her family dentist. One of the ways she does this is through consistency. “We are a small office with welltrained staff and low turnover,” she explains. “Patients will see the same staff each time they visit the office. [Staff members] want to get to know them as people and establish relationships with them, not just treat their teeth.” The staff at Quivira Park Family Den-

tistry, who are just as passionate about the field as Dr. Olsen is, doesn’t want you to feel like you are “just another patient” or that you are being rushed in and out without anyone really listening to your concerns or explaining treatments options to you. Dr. Olson first takes time to go over medical and dental histories for new patients and asks about any concerns or problems you may be having before anything else is done.

The goal at Quivira Park Family Dentistry is to make dentistry simple and understandable in a comfortable, relaxing, and open atmosphere in which patients don’t feel apprehensive about coming to the office or asking questions. All patients are encouraged to ask questions and take an active role in their dental health. “When a certain treatment is being recommended, we want our patients to understand why,” Dr. Olson explains. She points out that she will always go over the different options that are available as well as the risks and benefits of each, and will never pressure you to do anything you don’t want to do. Dr. Olson stresses that you are in control of your dental health, and that proceeding with any treatment is always your choice.

Dr. Olson strives to provide a friendly and relaxed atmosphere at her practice.

As a general dentistry practitioner, Dr. Olson is able to handle some advanced procedures in-house. When a referral is needed, she works closely with area specialists with whom she has established strong relationships through her involvement in the local dental community. Dr. Olson and her staff enjoy getting to know their patients and want to help you to maintain healthy, beautiful smiles your entire lifetime. They also want you to feel comfortable bringing in your family members and recommending Quivira Park Family Dentistry to your friends. Quivira Park Family Dentistry is located in Overland Park at 11740 W. 135th St., on the northeast corner of Quivira and 135th. To make an appointment, contact the office at 913.955.2300. What You Can Learn About Succession Planning From Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’ BY BRIDGET MASON HESS

I recently started watching the Netflix original series, Bloodline, which has provided some great “what not to do” examples for succession planning. This drama thriller is about a family running a resort hotel in the Florida Keys. The Rayburns are pillars of the community — successful, respected, an ideal family at first glance. But when the black sheep brother comes back to town, the picturesque image begins to unravel. Skeletons peek out of closets, divisive family dynamics are revealed, and the viewer sees foreshadowing of the train wreck about to unfold in the first episode. Whether you like this sort of addictive TV drama or not, it depicts textbook examples

PARENTING

BY MELANIE KNOPKE

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

Most parents have all encountered this situation at least once in their lives: You have a tight-knit group of friends. Everyone gets married and then starts having kids. You have play dates, and everything is wonderful as you share new-parent stories and admire your sweet babies. That is, until the kids get older and their little personalities start coming out. And then, one day, your children and your best friends’ children no longer get along. It can make for a very

36

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

awkward situation between close friends. Sometimes it can even end a friendship. But, it doesn’t have to be that way! I have been in this situation, and it’s definitely not fun. It can be uncomfortable for both parties involved. You just want to scream, “Can’t we all just get along?” As much as you want everything to be perfect, the reality is just because you are friends, doesn’t mean your kids have to be. The question is, how do you handle the situation? Do you completely eliminate all play dates and interaction between your kids? Or do you continue to have interaction and suffer through the fights, tears, and whining? I spoke with Harriet Barrish, a licensed psychologist in Kansas who specializes in working with families and children. She of-

fered some insight into this common problem and tips on how to deal with it without having to end a long-term friendship. If your child is the problem, Dr. Barrish says, you need to address why he is having trouble getting along. Is he bossy or controlling? Does he have a hard time sharing? Or is he aggressive with other children? If he acts this way not only with your friends’ children, but also with others, those issues need to be resolved. Discipline in theses situations is paramount. Dr. Barrish says parents should always try to teach their kids kindness and respect toward others. I have encountered the problem of having a child with some behavioral issues over for play dates. It is not easy disciplining someone else’s child. Nobody likes to be the mean parent, but there are times when you have to step in and control the situation. If you do continue to have play dates, and you are the only parent on hand watching the children, Dr. Barrish suggests having an open discussion with the other parents about disciplining the child. Address the issue of her getting out of line, and ask them if it is OK to put her in a time out. For those children who often can’t get along, Dr. Barrish also recommends having structured playtime. Plan fun activities like an art project, baking cookies, or a trip to the park. The longer the kids are left alone leaves more potential for problems. I definitely have been guilty of getting upset with my children if they have not played nicely with my friends’ kids. Sometimes, you just want them to get along so that you can enjoy time spent with your friends. “But, you should not guilt trip or punish your child if the children simply do not,” Dr. Barrish shares. While we would love for our best friends’ children to be their best friends as well, sometimes it just doesn’t happen that way!

The problem between the children may not be able to be resolved. “If it is not a good situation, just get together as friends without the children,” she explains. “This situation should not affect adult friendships.” As hard as it may be, eliminating the play dates also will eliminate a lot of stress on the friendship. As the children get older, the problems may cease. The behavior of a toddler is much different than that of a 7- or 8-year-old. Toddlers have a hard time sharing; especially when it is on their “turf.” And their behavior is very unpredictable; as with a teenager, you never know what you might get that day. It would not hurt to continue trying to get the children together as they mature and develop socially.

LOCAL GROUP RAISES MONEY FOR TREE PLANTINGS 38

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

They provide shade on a hot summer day, beauty to our streets, and most importantly, fresh air for all of us to breathe. Trees: the often overlooked, but wonderful addition to our community. Trees provide so much that many of us take for granted. One local group has taken initiative in helping provide communities with our lush, leafy additions through education and plantings. The Heartland Tree Alliance has started a new program called the Tree Fund. Each city in the metro area has its own fund, and users can donate to their specific city. The donations go toward educating communities and tree-planting events in each community. For every $1,000 donated, the Tree Fund group plans and coordinates a volunteer planting event with the specific community’s forester. Just one tree can make a huge difference. According to American Forests, a national nonprofit conservation organization, one tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. One tree also can provide enough fresh oxygen for two adults. The Tree Fund has an extremely user-friendly site. Once on the website, click on the city you’d like to donate to, then make the donation. You also can see how much each city has raised. From now until December 2015, every dollar raised up to $10,000 will be doubled by the generosity of the Dunn Family Foundation, so take advantage of the extra donations. With your help, you’re adding beauty and fresh air to our communities.

to tap into their inner sense of self and self-expression without any outside influences. Moreover, nature provides a blank canvas to tap into a person’s sense of awe. It gives people a connection to a broader universe larger than just their physical body. Staring at an endless ocean or the largeness of a beautiful snow-peaked mountain leaves you in a mildly meditative state distinguished by peacefulness and unity. Unlike an image on your phone, nature is rich with textures, sights, and sounds. This aesthetic awareness teaches you a sense of scale and offers a fresh perspective. In turn, nature minimizes your concerns and problems and makes you feel connected to a larger energy. It makes you feel connected to life in general and infuses people with liveliness, vitality, and awakening.

INCREASE TEAM COHESION Working in groups in the context of nature has profound positive effects on interpersonal relationships. Challenge courses are one of the most effective ways of illustrating and attaining this because they force a group to engage each other in a unique learning environment. Challenge courses are usually open to adults and children as young as 7, and can include a multitude of physical challenges including ziplines, rope courses, giant swings, climbing towers, and tree courses. Several cities in the metro area, including Leawood, Olathe, and Bonner Springs, are home to these challenge courses.

Not only does group work bond the participants, but working in groups can improve an individual participant’s self-confidence as well. A PROVEN PAST MOVES MIDWEST MEDICAL AESTHETICS INTO THE FUTURE BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photo / Jeff Ervard

You never want to settle for less when it comes to taking care of your body. But it can be a long, difficult path to finding the right product, practice, or care plan to fit your needs that also stays within your budget. There are numerous options to sift through in every city in order to find what you are looking for, and Kansas City is no exception. If it is skin treatments you are looking for, though, there is a place in the Kansas City area that has a record of reliability and results. Midwest Medical Aesthetics, with its office at 11213 Nall Ave., Suite 140, in Leawood, has been in business since 1998, and owner Kathleen Stegman, Ed.D, RN, has been working in the field even longer, with nearly 20 years of experience. Stegman, an innovator in her field, was one of the first in the U.S. to start doing microdermabrasion when she opened her practice in

42

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Leawood. She explains that one of her friends who had a skin clinic in Dallas, Texas, called and said, “Kathy, I got this new machine that sandblasts the face and was wondering if you’d want one.” “So, I was one of the first five in the U.S. to do microdermabrasion,” Stegman says matter-of-factly. This desire to find the best treatments for her patients has fueled her practice since the beginning. She points out that her practice was also the first in the Kansas City area to do laser hair removal and intense pulsed light (IPL). “It was really a fun and innovative time,” Stegman says. Midwest Medical Aesthetics has diversified since its early days to offer a wide range of products, including laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, IPL Foto Facial, Perlane™, Botox™, Dysport™, Xeomin™ and fillers, weight loss, skin treatments, and more. “We do about every kind of skin treatment,” she explains. “About anything with the body, we can handle.” Find the complete list of treatments at lookmybest.net. Convenience and quality of care are two things that have kept Midwest Medical Aesthetics a strong company throughout the years. The office is not large or ornate, which is precisely how Stegman likes it. With its relaxed atmosphere, clients are allowed to feel comfortable. Walk-ins are always welcomed and encouraged, the staff dress casually, and the employees know most clients by name.

This easygoing approach to business, along with the quality care administered by Stegman and her colleagues, is what she believes makes her business stand apart from the rest. “I don’t want to get too big. I want to keep it personable,” she says. “People know that when they call they are going to get me or Virginia [receptionist], and they know us.” This climate drives Midwest Medical Aesthetics’ philosophy of quality care at affordable prices. Stegman believes that no matter the amount of money you have, she will always be able to accommodate you by going after what will make the biggest impact for you. A rewards program ensures loyal clients get the most for what they pay. Midwest Medical Aesthetics not only has a history of innovation. It also is continuing to look for better ways to serve its clients in the future. The practice is diversified, offering the most cutting-edge services. However, Stegman is quick to point out she does stay away from “gimmicky” products. “We know that most things we do are tried-and-true – very proven things – so we get great results from them,” she explains. One way Midwest Medical Aesthetics has taken strides to better serve its clients is having a doctor on staff. Gael Wheeler, D.O., is board-certified in osteopathic medicine, family practice, and holistic medicine. Midwest Medical Aesthetics is also looking to the future by finding the best products for their clients. A new product the center is unveil-

ing this summer is called Kybella™ — a cheaper, easier alternative to liposuction. Kybella™ injections are used to dissolve fat within the face without costly and tedious surgery.

“ We know that most things we do are tried-and-true – very proven things – so we get great results from them” — Kathleen Stegman, owner of Midwest Medical Aesthetics Stegman believes, along with her coworkers, that Midwest Medical Aesthetics has proven itself to be a reliable, welcoming practice in the metro area. As the first of its kind in Kansas City, it has a proven history, and she and her coworkers believe it has a bright future. With a friendly atmosphere, innovative leaders, affordable prices, and common sense approach, it has many things going for it. Stegman sums it up best when she says, “What we do here is make people feel confident about themselves, because aging is optional.”

GOOD TASTES

BY LESLI LUNDQUIST Photo / Jeff Evrard

Hatch, New Mexico: Home to the Hatch Green Chillies August means back to school for so many families in the KC metro. But around our house, it also means the Hatch green chillies, shipped directly from New Mexico, will be in the grocery stores! These little beauties are usually available fresh for just a few weeks in August. So, I snatch them up, roast them on the grill, and pop them in the freezer until the perfect recipe comes along. Come August, these easy, baked chicken chimichangas will get a touch of fresh southwest flavor! 44

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM

Chicken Chimichangas Serves 6

Ingredients

Directions

16 ounces green chile salsa (salsa verde)* 1/4 cup chicken broth 4 ounces cream cheese 1 teaspoon cumin 1/4 cup cilantro (optional) 2 cups rotisserie chicken, cubed 1-1/4 cups shredded Mexican cheese blend 6 flour tortillas (8–10 inches) Olive oil Pico de gallo (if desired) Sour cream (if desired) Guacamole (if desired)

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. In a medium sauce pan, combine the salsa* and chicken broth. Bring to a boil. Add the cream cheese and stir until melted. Add the cumin and cilantro; stir until mixed. Gently stir in the chicken and remove it from the heat. Set out 6 tortillas and put 1/2 a cup of filling in the middle of each. Divide the cheese equally between the tortillas. Fold each tortilla by first folding each side in and then rolling in thirds. Place the chimichangas seam side down on the baking sheet and lightly spray with olive oil. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until browned. Serve with pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole. (Or, the filling can be refrigerated until you are ready to make the chimichangas.) *Just add a fresh, roasted, diced green chile for some extra southwest flair!

However, when I was diagnosed with food allergies nearly five years ago, my eyes were opened to all of the wonderful dishes that can be created day to day by simply following a recipe. I have been told that I am a “cook from the pantry” type of food guru. I love to keep my pantry stocked and to cook with the seasons, give my tastes buds a challenge, and of course feed my family delicious, home-cooked meals.

TRENDS

BY MELANIE KNOPKE Photos / Baldwin

Let’s face it: Buying jeans is stressful. Rarely do you go into one store and find “the pair.” But what if you knew what style of jeans was best for your body type? Narrowing down a flattering style eliminates some of the stress and helps you focus on what style you should be shopping for. If you are looking to invest in a new pair this fall, here are a few helpful shopping tips.

CURVY

If you carry weight through your hips and thighs, look for a jean that has a mid-rise and a straight or slim bootcut. This will streamline your body, and flatter the curvy part of your body. Steer away from jeans with too much distressing which can emphasize your legs and thighs.

RECTANGLE

This body type can pull off the flares and bootcut styles that are coming back in season. A flare that is more fitted through the hips and bottom, but looser through the calves will balance a boyish silhouette while offering the illusion of a curvier figure.

APPLE

If you carry weight through your middle, you will want to find a jean that has a comfortable waistline. Go for a fit with a straight leg, which shows off your assets. Stay away from super-slim styles, or high-waisted jeans that can draw negative attention to your middle area.

PETITE

Petite or smaller-framed bodies can pull off almost any jean style. A long, skinny cut will show off your tiny figure and curves, while a pair of high-waisted trousers will create the illusion of height and length. Just be sure to stay away from anything too baggy; you don’t want to overwhelm your small frame!

The Rivington in Colorado Patchwork jean, available from Baldwin Denim (baldwindenim.com), was featured in Bazaar’s spring preview and is a favorite among celebrities, including Beyoncé.

Take a snack break.

Hearing music you love might be good for your heart, according to research from the University of Maryland. It can relax blood vessels and increase blood flow.

Take a 10-minute break to watch a silly YouTube video to help pull you out of a slump.

A Kinsey Institute study found snuggling release the hormone oxytocin, which triggers the dopamine system in your brain and boosts your mood.

A 2012 study shows faking a smile may help lower your heart rate, even in high-stress situations. In the study, participants completed stressful tasks while holding chopsticks in their mouths to produce smiles, and the findings revealed that all participants remained more calm than the control group.

Doodling and coloring requires you to use both sides of your brain, which stops the stress cycle, helping you to feel better instantly, say researchers at Harvard Medical School.

A Kansas State University study found that people who play on their smartphones throughout the workday were happier by 5 p.m. It’s similar to chatting with coworkers or taking a short walk. The breaks rejuvenate your productivity, focus, and creativity.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona in Spain say a handful of mixed nuts (raw walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts) helps you feel better by raising your serotonin levels. An added bonus: The nuts also boost heart health.
