WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
FIGHTING FOR HOPE year. Mom Deliece is a fighter — when she received Braden’s first cancer diagnosis she was an elementary school principal in the midst of her own battle with breast cancer. (The two underwent treatment together.) I haven’t met Dad, Brian, yet, but I’ve witnessed the love his family has for him and I know he’s good stuff. The best, actually. If three different types of cancer weren’t enough, it’s just a sampling of some of the major health obstacles thrown at the Hofens. Multiple sclerosis? Check. (Deliece.) Autism? Yes. (Braden.) I know many people with a charity or cause close to their heart. I’ve written about one or two of my family’s favorites in this column before, but this month brings another center stage: Braden’s Hope. If you’ve not had the pleasure of meeting Olathe native Braden Hofen, you’re missing out. He’s a gentle spirit, joy personified, and a battle warrior all wrapped up in one little body. He’s a 10-year-old cancer survivor (currently in remission, yay!) who has spent most of his short life fighting not one, but two kinds of cancer. And his family? They are something else. Brother Zach is an accomplished tween chef who often can be found cooking right beside his mentor, Jasper Mirabile. And oh, by the way, he made a life-saving bone marrow donation for his brother last

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
And yet they choose HOPE. They choose FIGHT. They choose INSPIRE. And that’s why our family chooses Braden’s Hope, a nonprofit dedicated specifically to funding childhood cancer research. We’ve been inspired so many times by the Hofens. My daughter is Braden’s age. She has read every single journal entry about his treatments so she could “experience it with him — so he knows he isn’t alone,” she says. He taught her about strength and perseverance. My son likes to follow all of Braden’s “detours” — moments captured by Deliece that illustrate Braden finding joy in a fun place around town. Braden taught him to appreciate simple fun. And I was so in awe of Deliece and her initiative, persistence, and fighting spirit, that I contacted her out
of the blue and asked her to coffee one day. Quite simply, she was someone I had to know. I’m so glad I did. This month marks the fourth annual Hope Gala, the largest fundraiser for the Braden’s Hope foundation. It’s a fun night of dinner, shopping (silent-auction style), and casino games — perfect for date night or a ladies night out. As of press time, it hasn’t sold out; I’d love to see you at the Overland Park Convention Center on Sept. 26! Tickets are available at bradenshope.org. We’ve got a jam-packed issue for you this month. Where else can you learn how to organize your closet, find the latest scoop on eye beauty treatments, and get a jump on Oktoberfest by finding KC’s coolest breweries? It’s all right here at your fingertips. Happy September!

AROUND TOWN
BY JULIE BURTON
Photo / Boulevard Brewing Co.
TAPPING KANSAS CITY Boulevard Brewery Co.’s Brewhouse
It all started with a royal wedding in 1810. The citizens of Munich, Germany, were invited to, well, party on a lawn in honor of the new Prince and Princess of Bavaria. The party — Oktoberfest — continued with every subsequent year, running from late September to the first weekend in October. But you don’t need to travel to Munich to enjoy a fall beer. We headed out and picked our six favorite craft breweries. Grab a pretzel and explore some of the best fall brews Kansas City has to offer.
10
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
BOULEVARD BREWING CO. Kansas City, MO It’s the brightest star in the world of Kansas City craft breweries. If you are a beer lover and live in Kansas City then you have most likely had Boulevard Wheat. In 25 years, Boulevard Brewing Co. has expanded to 31 states and overseas, including Belgium, France, Norway, and Sweden. Boulevard has mastered the art of seasonal brewing. Its Bob’s ’47 Oktoberfest is a recipe Master Brewer Bob Werkowitch submitted to graduate from the U.S. Brewer’s Academy in 1947. Werkowitch offered guidance to John McDonald, Boulevard’s founder, in the infant stages of the start-up. As a way to honor Werkowitch, Boulevard named the Oktoberfest after Werkowitch.
MARTIN CITY BREWING CO. Kansas City, MO In 2010, Matt Moore and Chance Adams started a business plan to purchase a building in Martin City so they could open a microbrewery. Their meeting always started
and ended with a beer. And they didn’t tell their wives. One year later, Moore and Adams fessed up to their spouses and Martin City Brewing Co. opened its own brewpub, which has since grown to encompass three buildings. The original brewpub serves upscale pub food, next door is the Pizza and Taproom, and the third building is where the magic happens — the brewery itself. There, Martin City Brewing makes 12 different beers. This fall, Martin City Brewing will have an original Oktoberfest in the fall lineup. It also will release Brandy Barrel, which has been aging since the brewery opened.
TORN LABEL Kansas City, MO A movie producer from Los Angeles and a law student from Chicago are the backbone of Torn Label Brewing Co. Rafi Chaudry and Travis Moore grew up in Kansas City, but their career paths took each
to different cities around the globe. Moore even lived with monks in Belgium to learn the craft of making beer. Chaudry and Moore left their jobs for good to bring their hobby back to Kansas City. They wanted to showcase the complexities of flavors from the cities they lived in without losing a Midwest aesthetic. Torn Label will be releasing a fall beer called Day for Night Black IPA. Torn Label also has a beer on tap named Quadjillo made with quadjillo chilis. “It just tastes ‘Halloweeny,’” Chaudry says.
CINDER BLOCK North Kansas City, MO It was just a random Wednesday in a cinderblock basement. Bryce Schaffter decided he wanted to go into commercial brewing. Schaffter met Master Brewer Bryan Buckingham at a Nebraska beer festival. And Cinder Block was born.
Cinder Block is known for its Block IPA. But its version of an Oktoberfest, Block Cut Lager, will be tough to top. The beer has a “bready” and clean taste. “It’s an easy drinking beer. It has the perfect amount of alcohol so you can drink several and be fine,” Buckingham says, laughing.
FREE STATE BREWING Lawrence, KS In 1988, Free State Brewing founder Chuck Margerl lobbied Kansas legislators to get a Prohibition-era state law changed to allow brewing to return to Kansas. Free State became the first legal brewery in Kansas in more than 100 years. Ad Astra Ale was the first beer served in 1989. Since then, Free State has produced too many beers to count. Magerl estimates the number to be somewhere in the hundreds. In celebration of Oktoberfest, Free State is brewing a special beer. “Our Oktoberfest tastes like a good time,” Magerl says. “Fall is always a good time for a beer.”
KC BIER CO. Kansas City, MO It’s Munich in our own town — KC Bier Co. makes all German beer. The brewery even takes it to the extent of importing all German hops and malt. German beer requires only four ingredients: water, hops, malt, and yeast. The many flavors come from how the beer is made, not what is added. According to the Germans and KC Bier, a “true Oktoberfest” is only served at the Oktoberfest festival in Munich. Any other beer is simply called a “fest bier.” KC Bier’s “Fest Bier” will be introduced at its own Oktoberfest celebration, which will be held from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4 on-site at the Bavarian Bier Garden. APP OF THE MONTH
HELP BLIND PEOPLE SEE The gist: The Be My Eyes app makes life easier for the blind by connecting
them with sighted helpers through their smartphones. This allows the blind to handle big and small tasks, while you enjoy the job of helping someone else in a simple way. Through a direct video call, a blind person can ask you for help with tasks that require normal vision. For example, he might want to know the expiration date on the milk or need help navigating new surroundings. He would then direct his phone camera at the object or environment, while you describe to him what you see.
The cons: Currently, Be My Eyes is only available for the iPhone, although an Android version is in the works. Android users can sign up to be notified of the app’s launch at bemyeyes.org/android.

IN FOCUS
Darrel Wingo, owner of Knotty Rug Co., says he has a passion for helping clients find high-quality, hand-knotted rugs.
KNOTTY RUG CO.: KNOTTY ... BUT OH, SO NICE BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Jeff Ervard
Just over a dozen years ago, Darrel Wingo was enjoying a successful career as a specialty paint and interior finishing contractor. One day, a client asked for his help in choosing a rug that was just right since he knew her colors better than anyone else. Not only did he find that perfect rug for his client, he also found a few for himself he just couldn’t resist. And then he found a few more. Eventually his new-found passion resulted in an ever-growing collection that had surpassed his personal needs; he decided to sell some of his inventory. At first, he worked out of his own home, holding garage sales. When his garage could not hold any more rugs and his driveway sales had become regular, successful events, Wingo determined a better location was needed for selling the beautiful handmade pieces he had come to appreciate. Knotty Rug Co. was established in 2003 and moved to its current location

in the art and antique district just west of the Country Club Plaza in 2006. So what exactly is a “knotty” rug? Wingo explains that handknotted rugs are created on a loom by craftsmen using the same centuries-old technique used by craftsmen before them. Each piece of yarn is wrapped around the warp (top to bottom) and weft (side to side) of the fabric and tied, one knot at a time. The foundation is usually made of cotton, which doesn’t shrink and helps the piece to retain its original shape. Most pieces, he says, are made of wool — the most forgiving fabric for general care and cleaning. Wingo says the color in most rugs comes from natural vegetable dyes that are typically dyed in small batches. This can lead to variations in color and appearance, even within the same piece, which, Wingo points out, is one indication of a piece being handmade rather than machine made. Other factors can affect the rug’s appearance, he says, including weather conditions when the rug is being dyed. These variations add to the rug’s character. Knotty Rug Co. sells only hand-knotted pieces and does not carry low-end tufted machine-created pieces. Wingo personally selects each of the rugs in the collection, many of which
are Turkish. Some are antique or semi-antique and have been previously owned, while others are new and obtained from various places including a reputable wholesaler with whom Wingo has worked for a number of years.
People tend to cite pets or younger children as the reason they fear making the investment in a high-quality rug. But, when cared for properly, finer handmade pieces are more likely to stand up to normal wear and tear much better than machine-crafted rugs. Wingo enjoys educating his customers about the different types of rugs he sells and why there is a cost differential between them. For example, a medium-quality 8-ft. by 10-ft. rug can take four to six months to complete. A high-quality rug of the same size may take 18 months or more. “Some people are hesitant to purchase better quality pieces such as these,” he says. People tend to cite pets or younger children as the reason they fear making the investment. But Wingo is quick to point out that when cared for properly, finer handmade pieces are more likely to stand up to normal wear and tear much better than less expensive machine-crafted rugs made of synthetics. These often don’t clean as well. Another benefit rugs have over carpets with regards to cleaning: With traditional (wall-to-wall) carpet, only the top part is cleaned whereas area rugs can be removed and cleaned thoroughly. In addition to the huge selection of beautiful handmade rugs and carpets, Knotty Rug Co. offers a number of services to its customers, including pick-up and delivery for professional rug and carpet cleaning, as well as expert repairs for the binding on the sides, the fringe on the ends, and even holes in the center of a rug that may require reweaving. For a personalized shopping experience, Wingo invites you to bring in photos or swatches from home showing your colors, tastes, and style. Rugs may be checked out to try at home, and appraisals for pieces you already own are available by appointment. Knotty Rug Co. is located at 4510 State Line Road in Kansas City, Kansas. The phone number is 913.677.1877. For a look at what’s in store and more, check out knottyrug.com, where most of the inventory is available for online shopping, or on Facebook.
Bring in photos or swatches from home, and owner Darrel Wingo will help you find the right piece.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY: BEAUTY PRODUCTS TO PERK YOUR PEEPERS As the old saying goes, your eyes are the windows to your soul. But even though our mothers taught us it’s inside beauty that counts, not how we look on the outside — who really wants their soul windows to be lacking? Especially when there are so many easy and affordable tricks to help perk them up. 24
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
From simple makeup tutorials to some quick salon adjustments, here are some of the top recommended beauty products to help enhance your eyes.
THE BASICS If you don’t follow an eyebrow regimen, it might be time to start. Pluck stray hairs yourself, or head to an expert to wax or thread away unwanted growth. (Shaving should be avoided as it’s difficult to control and allows hairs to grow back quickly.) It’s a simple step, but it’s one that can help shape and bring out the eyes in a single session. Finding a flattering shape will also work well in your favor. If you’re new to the eyebrow game, head to a pro for an accurate consultation on what will work best for your face and eye shape. Waxing is quick and effective, while threading (done by using actual thread to pull out hairs) takes just minutes, is painless, and pretty darn impressive to watch.
MAKEUP TIPS Now, consider a makeup routine that’s flattering and works to bring out your eyes. Too much makeup can do more harm than
none at all — the trick is finding an inbetween. If you’re new to eye makeup or experimenting, start small and work your way up. Use darker colors for contouring (in the crease), and lighter colors to highlight near the brow and the lid. Eyeliner can also help the eyes pop (though most should use sparingly; those with larger eyes have more leeway with liner). Then finish off with mascara to tie the entire look together. Ask those at makeup counters if you’re struggling with colors; you can always buy similar versions at a cheaper price. Or find cases that outline the best placement for each shadow color or which are made for specific eye colors. For instance, purples bring out brown eyes, and neutrals like gray and taupe are best for blue.
:
LONGER LASHES If you’re unhappy with the length of your lashes, there are products that can naturally encourage growth. Latisse is one of the most popular brands that can help you grow thicker, darker eyelashes. Talk to your doctor about gaining a prescription for a permanent adjustment. A natural alternative is lavender essential oil. Experts say to place a few drops into your mascara bottle (or a conditioner if you don’t wear mascara) and watch the length take place over the next few weeks. Eyelash extensions are another, less permanent option. Go for the glue-ons, which you can find at your favorite drug store. Or contact a pro (many will travel right to you) for
extra lash length that will last for multiple weeks at a time. Stack them continuously for constantly luscious eyes, or enlist before a big event.
LASH AND BROW TINTING To achieve a more natural look, especially for those with dyed hair, consider tinting. Pros actually dye and adjust facial hair color to help create a more natural look. The safe and quick process provides more dimension to your eyes and face. Ashley Miller from Mia Bella Donna Med Spa says the process takes 10 to 20 minutes and will last between four to six weeks for lashes, and two to four weeks for brows.

Caring for Your Elderly Parents When we’re young, many of us view our parents as strong individuals we depend on for survival, teaching, and emotional needs. However, many of us don’t anticipate having the roles reversed. With issues like stroke or accidental slips, the necessity of taking care of a parent can come as a scary surprise. With a bit of planning and a few tips, these inevitable occurrences can be less overwhelming and more manageable.
1. Plan out expenses. Taking care of your elderly loved one is going to take monetary hits to your wallet. According to a MetLife Mature Market Institute analysis, the national average for adult day care is about $61 a day. Although things like Medicare can bring relief to your wallet, it won’t help in situations where an individual needs help with a chronic condition. Talk with your loved one now about finances.
2. Bring in a professional. The thought of taking care of a family member can bring anyone to an overwhelmed state. So, talk to a professional to learn the next steps and help you make decisions from an objective standpoint. Consider finding a specialist through the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers.
3. Learn the ins and outs of Medicare and Medicaid. MetLife provides a comprehensive document that outlines all of the different benefits that come with each organization. Studying up will reduce headaches in the long run.
4. Consider a home. If caring for your loved one in your own home won’t work for all of you, consider placing her in living community. This is a tough decision — one nobody wants to make. However, when your loved one needs specialized attention, a nursing home might be the best option. The Eldercare Locator (eldercare.gov) is an excellent resource in finding agencies that can help you search for the right facilities. Know the difference in types of care:

• Continuing care retirement communities: These offer a tiered approach to the aging process. They are guaranteed lifetime housing and the level of care increases as the need arises. • Assisted living facilities: These communities help with daily living but not medical needs. They offer many group activities and often offer group meal plans. • Nursing homes: These are for individuals who need specialized care for serious health needs or chronic illnesses.
5. Keep your loved one involved in activities. After years of working or taking care of their families, for once, many individuals have extra time. Fortunately, organizations such as SeniorCorps (seniorcorps.org) help keep people involved during their retirement years. The website is full of information about the program and how today’s 55+ can give back to the community.
6. Take advantage of technology. Many caretakers of parents choose to keep them in their own homes. While this is absolutely doable, it does take some changes here and there. QuietCare is a product that uses motion sensors to help you keep tabs on a parent. No microphones or video cameras are used so your loved one will still enjoy privacy.
7. Visit often. If your parent is in a living community, make sure to visit often. Your parent needs the interaction, plus you’ll be able to tell if their surroundings are safe and well accommodating to her.

Small Space, Happy Place Not everyone is blessed with a beautiful walk-in closet with space galore. Especially in older homes, where closet space is nonexistent, you need to be more strategic about how you organize and declutter these small spaces. As a closet and wardrobe stylist, I am often helping clients clean out, organize, and simplify their small spaces. Before you buy all the products to organize, you need to do some purging first. Follow these three steps. 1. Go through your clothing and pull out pieces you haven’t worn in a year. Unless an item is an heirloom

I spoke with the staff at the Container Store to get some expert tips on planning out your small space. Here are their suggestions on how to save space in your closet: • If possible, move out-of-season garments to another area of your home. The space under your bed is a wonderful solution when you use an underbed storage box or bag.
• If most of your clothes are short-hanging, add an extra closet rod to instantly double the amount of hanging space.

Dr. Karen Baucom’s OB/GYN experience with hormones and new life development led her to study naturopathic medicine, which emphasizes healing for the body, mind, and spirit.
LONGEVITY AND A FORWARD-THINKING PRACTICE BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photo / Jeff Ervard
What doctors and surgeons are capable of doing for your body advances every day, but let’s face it, trying to sort out what is right for your body is a formidable process. No one else has your body, so no one else truly understands what you are going through at any given moment. When solutions are found to your ailments, they often come with side effects too. Dr. Karan Baucom, owner and founder of The Baucom Institute for Longevity in Overland Park, Kansas, believes there are alternatives to what she calls the “cookie cutter” method applied by most hospitals and doctors nowadays. Dr. Baucom practiced medicine for many years, but became bored with the standard method of treatment. She began researching naturopathic medicine, nutrition, and how the body is able to heal itself. “It refreshed the idea that there is a cause behind something, and that you don’t just have to treat the symptoms,” she says. This idea of getting to the root of a person’s illness and treating it naturally instead of temporarily pacifying them with prescription drugs or other forms of standard medicine is clearly important to Dr. Baucom. Simply by talking to her, you can tell she has a care for the well-being of her patients, and truly wants to see them in their best health. The Baucom Institute for Longevity is an integrative functional medical practice. Integrative medicine is a medical practice that focuses on the whole person. This includes the body, mind, and spirit. It focuses on healing the individual. Functional medicine is an approach used by practitioners as a model to organize findings and pinpoint the root cause of a symptom. “It’s a kind of f lexible and adaptive information-gatheringand-sorting architecture for clinical practice that deepens the clinician’s understanding of the often overlapping ways things can go wrong,” according to The Institute for Functional Medicine’s website. Dr. Baucom takes this integrative approach a step further. She believes the body, mind, and spirit function as a unit, but also that patients should have an intimate part in their process of healing. “We’re a partnership,” she explains. “We’re not dictatorial. We say, ‘Let’s discuss this. Why are we asking you to do this? Here is some information you can read that is laymenlanguage-friendly.’” This allows the patient to be involved with finding the right methods of healing. Treating illnesses is important, but preventing an illness can do wonders for a person, and Dr. Baucom truly believes her practice is in the business of keeping people well. “Reversing
things is what we do because we find them earlier than most doctors,” she says. She believes age is only a number. This means that, while age can affect your health, it does not mean you have to be unhealthy and unhappy as you grow older. Dr. Baucom’s practice exudes this practical, individualistic approach, with its comfortable waiting room and warm decor. But this does not mean Dr. Baucom does not have her share of respectable accomplishments. She and her twin sister were the first African-Americans to graduate from University of Missouri – Kansas City’s School of Medicine in 1975. She has been practicing medicine for 40 years and has had several articles published about her. Since she became interested in integrative medicine, she has attended conferences, taken courses, and received board certifications, including by the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine.
Dr. Baucom believes the body, mind, and spirit function as a unit, but also that patients should have an intimate part in their process of healing. Awards, courses, and certifications all make doctors sound good, but Dr. Baucom believes her patient referrals are what have made her practice what it is today. “What we’re most proud of,” she says, “is we see grandmothers, mothers, daughters, cousins, uncles, aunts, etc., by patient referral only. People aren’t used to seeing the doctor and spending this much time one-on-one. To do the work we do, you have to spend time and get to know that patient. What we try to do at this institute is take the time, listen to the patient, and remember to do no harm.” Dr. Baucom believes that, after 40 years of practicing medicine, she has truly found her passion. “Medicine excites me again,” she shares. “I’m passionate about what I do because I know it works.” This passion is apparent in how her practice is run. Her belief that patients should be educated and involved is woven into every fiber of her work, and she believes this has made The Baucom Institute for Longevity a trusted, forward-thinking practice in the Kansas City area. 7 Steps for Protecting Yourself From Fraud BY BRIDGET MASON HESS
5: Monitor your credit report. Free credit monitoring is readily available (see annualcreditreport.com), so take advantage of it! Just as you keep tabs on individual transactions, take a regular look at your credit report to make sure nobody has tried to open a new account using your name. It is likely unnecessary to spend money on identity-protection services, as many experts suggest they do little more than what you can monitor on your own.
6: Report anything suspicious, and know your rights. Federal law
News of yet another data security breach had a loved one concerned about fraud recently. There’s no denying that exposed personal information can be scary — it increases your risk of a criminal using your accounts, setting up new ones in your name, even stealing your tax refund. But if you are prepared and aware, using the steps below, you can protect yourself.
communal computer or using public Wi-Fi. Never click on a hyperlink within an unsolicited email to do online shopping, banking, or sharing of any personal information. It is also a good idea to keep the operating systems on your computer and mobile devices up to date, as updates often include protections against viruses or improve security.
1: Always keep an eye on your accounts. If you are not paying
3: Be savvy about sharing information — online, over the phone, and in your trash. Do
attention to every transaction in your bank and credit card accounts, you should be. With the ease of banking from a computer or phone, many people look at their primary bank accounts almost every day — this is a great idea! Give other accounts a similar level of attention, or at the very least, carefully review every transaction as soon as you receive your statement.
2: Be smart about passwords and where you do your shopping and banking. Change your passwords often. Use strong passwords. Do NOT use the “remember me” function to save account passwords online. Be wary of conducting business from a public/

not click on website advertisements and fill out any of your personal information. The same goes for phone calls. A financial company would not call and ask for personal data over the phone, so if you get this sort of call, it could be a scam. Shred any private information before putting it in the trash, too.
4: File your taxes on time (or early). It’s not just credit and debit cards you need to protect. Another criminal trend on the rise include people filing phony tax returns using someone else’s identity and a fake W2 in order to get a refund. You might not suspect this has happened if you haven’t filed taxes yourself.
states that consumers are only liable for $50 of fraudulent charges to a credit card. For debit cards, the liability can be greater — up to $50 if the charge is reported within two days, up to $500 until 60 days, and you could be held fully responsible for charges not reported after 60 days. This is why it is especially important to keep an eye on your bank transactions and report anything that looks unusual as soon as possible. Any time you suspect fraud, or if a card is missing, call the financial company to let them know and close the account immediately.
7: Put a fraud alert on your credit report if you suspect that you’re a victim. Take advantage of the 90-day free fraud alert if your information has been compromised. A fraud alert won’t stop fraudulent activity altogether, but it alerts lenders to make certain of a person’s identity before issuing new credit — a red flag of sorts. You also may consider a “security freeze” if you are concerned your social security number has been exposed. If you put a freeze on your account, for a small fee to each of the three credit bureaus (about $10), no new accounts can be opened. If you need to open a new account yourself, you can temporarily lift the freeze to do so. Finally, check out stopfraud.gov, a government website that details step-by-step instructions on how to avoid fraud and exactly what to do if you do become a victim.

School Daze: De-Mystifying the College Search and Application Process
Last fall, my son began his final year of high school. A friend of mine

whose son had graduated the previ-
STUDENT EXPERIENCE
ous spring advised me to “enjoy the senior year, it goes crazy fast!” Truer words have never been spoken. The first half of the year was a blur of admission-application deadlines. Acceptance letters a few months later brought a whole other set of deadlines for additional scholarship opportunities or special programs that might be of interest. Once “D Day” (May 1) had come and gone, yet more deadlines appeared for new-student orientation, course registration, and housing and meal plan selection. After muddling through all of the above, I realized there were only a few weeks left before my soon-to-be college freshman was heading off to school. Sigh. And yet, it was hard to imagine a more exciting time in his young life!

What type of school should your student choose: a two-year community college or four-year college or university? A large student body or a smaller, more intimate community? An urban setting or a rural location? A public or private institution? In-state or out-of-state? Close to home — or as far away as possible? What, in addition to academics, is your student looking for in a school? For example, are campus traditions or major sporting events important?
CAMPUS VISITS Touring early in the game may help whittle the number of schools your student applies to during senior year. If he already has a pretty good idea of a possible major, meet with an admissions representative to discuss whether that type of program is offered at the school being considered. Take advantage of the junior visit days at the schools your teen is even remotely interested in rather than waiting to do all your campus visits during senior year. If time is limited, weigh the pros and cons of visiting on
“staged” days versus arranging a private tour and meeting with an academic adviser. If time allows, do both. Once admitted, make sure to attend the admitted student days at the schools he is considering.
ONLINE VS. TRADITIONAL VS. COMMON APP Nearly all schools accept online applications and many may waive the application fee if you apply by a certain deadline. This is particularly helpful if your kid is applying to a number of schools. More than 500 public and private colleges and universities now accept The Common Application, a standardized application form that your student can turn in for all the schools she may be applying to. Some schools, however, may also have additional essay questions. Sage advice from my now-college freshman: “Be prepared to write essays and use your own voice. Be honest about your accomplishments. Don’t just give answers you think they might be looking for.”
FINANCES Know what you can and cannot do expense-wise. That said, don’t let the initial price tag keep your teen from applying to specific schools — especially if it is likely she will qualify for scholarship money.
SCHOLARSHIPS Good grades in high school and higher scores on standardized tests translate into more scholarship opportunities in college. In addition to scholarships offered by the schools themselves, check with the counseling office at your student’s high school for private scholarships that may be available in your community or through corporations. Many alumni associations offer scholarships with their own applications and deadlines. Above all, pay close attention to strict deadlines!
LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Ask people who know — and like — your student if they would be willing to write a positive letter of recommendation. The number needed and type of acquaintance with the student varies from school to school.
FRIENDS “Having a large number of friends choose a particular school shouldn’t be the deciding factor as to whether you attend there rather than some other school where you may not know anyone,” my son says. Remind your teen that college is a time when lifelong friendships are formed, especially if he will be living on campus and/or be involved in campus organizations and other student-life activities. When it comes right down to it, what matters most is whether a particular school is a good fit for your kid. Even if a school or program is considered one of the best, if your teen is unhappy there, he is less likely to be successful. Good luck, and enjoy the senior year. It truly does go crazy fast.

MIND & BODY
BY HODDY POTTER
Flirting With Meditation Through Yoga “Ooomm, ooomm, ooomm,” the class around me chants. In addition to the “om” sound, I hear hushed giggling. I pop open my eyes to see two pretty ponytailed college-aged girls snickering and giving eyes to each other. I know what they are giggling about. They walked into my yoga studio telling the teacher they had never taken yoga before, but are athletic and “work out all the time.” They name running and boot camp as typical pursuits. The girls rolled out their new yoga mats

and chatted before the teacher came into the room. Once there, the teacher started the class, telling participants to be present on their mat, to live in the “here and now,” and let go of things in the past. Easy enough — these young girls did not flinch. But when the teacher then instructed the class to chant three “oms” in unison, you could tell the girls were pushed out of their comfort zones. I understood completely. When yoga became hot in California where I was living in the early 2000s as a 20-something, I jumped on it. I enjoyed the more vigorous Ashtanga or Power Flow versions of yoga for the sweaty workout. But I would complain to my husband about the “chanting stuff ” and tell him I just wanted the workout. I felt like the “om-ing” at the beginning of class was an unnecessary step, and the lying down at the end (Savasana — a position in which you are lying on your back with your eyes closed, arms out, palms up, and legs extended) was a waste of time. In fact, depending on the class and whether I felt like I could get away with it, I often got up right after the teacher announced it and left. But, every once in a while, I would lie in stillness for the full time and I always felt better and refreshed. For me, yoga class was the first place I flirted with meditation.
At the time, my life was relatively stress-free. I had just gotten married, we lived in a great neighborhood, and we were in law school. However, things quickly changed. After I got out of law school, I worked in a career I loathed, had three kids a year-and-a-half apart (twins!), decided to a move halfway across the country and open two businesses, and was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. Needless to say, meditation has now become a daily part of my life. Yoga is a key way to ensure I get it in. As my younger self did, many people treat yoga like any other physical exercise regimen: moving the body through various poses for physical challenge. However, meditation — the act of focusing your mind — is also a key component of the yoga experience. The Sanskrit word “yoga” means “oneness unity” or “unity with the divine.” It was developed thousands of years ago not as a workout, but as a “work-in” — a chance to connect to internal spiritual energy and life force.

Yoga is a great place to start working on meditation because the classes set aside time for it. Meditation is not something you can master overnight. It takes serious dedication. It is very hard to streamline your attention and prevent your mind from wandering. Just like regular yoga practice stretches muscles, a regular meditation practice stretches your mind’s ability to focus and quiet itself. If you are interested in meditation, but are not sure that a yoga class is where you want to start, simply meditate at home. Find a quiet place to be alone for 10 minutes. Sit upright in a chair or lie back comfortably. Darken your room. Close your eyes and take deep, full breaths. They

should be so deep you feel like you cannot take another sip of air or empty any air out. Try as best you can to drop your thoughts. This is easier said than done. Distracting thoughts about the past or future pop in aggressively. To help shut them out, when I first started meditating regularly, I focused on my breath and two phrases — “breathe in, breathe out.” You can choose to focus on anything else, such as the simple phrases

INCREASING THE FERTILITY ODDS BY JULIE BURTON Photo / Jeff Ervard
Dr. Dan Gehlbach is in the business of helping people create families.
Even if a woman becomes pregnant, unfortunately, miscarriages can happen at any age.
Dr. Gehlbach has helped to create thousands of babies over the past 11 years at his Olathe and North Kansas City offices. He is a boardcertified reproductive endocrinologist at Midwest Reproductive Center (midwestreproductive.com). Every day, he gets to help infertile women conceive. New parents call him a miracle worker.
“Most of the time miscarriages will occur because of chromosomal abnormalities. With PGS, we are able to tell which embryos lack abnormalities, thus increasing the odds of full-term pregnancy,”
But, as most doctors know, his career is not in miracles. It’s in the field of science. Dr. Gehlbach is always looking for new ways to increase the odds of conceiving for his patients. The best odds lie in the newest reproductive technology. In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is king of the reproduction world. IVF consists of removing an egg from a woman’s ovary and fertilizing it with sperm in a lab dish. Once the egg is fertilized, the embryo is placed back into the woman’s uterus. The embryo implants and the woman becomes pregnant. IVF is also a gateway procedure into further advanced reproductive technology. And Dr. Gehlbach takes advantage of this innovative technology for his patients. The chance of miscarriage can be reduced if the embryos are screened for chromosomal abnormalities before being placed inside the woman. It’s called preimplantation genetic screening (PGS). PGS is a test to make sure embryos have a normal amount of chromosomes. “Let’s say a woman over 35 is undergoing IVF. She has six successful, good-quality embryos under our microscopes,” Dr. Gehlbach explains. “The standard procedure would be to transfer one to two embryos into the woman. But with PGS, each embryo’s cells are sent to a lab to be analyzed. The lab may come back to us and tell us these three are abnormal. We then know which embryo to transfer into the woman’s uterus. Her chances of becoming pregnant shoot way up. It’s a very successful technology for our IVF patients.” PGS also keeps the chances of multiple pregnancies low. It is offered to all IVF patients, but comes highly recommended for women who are over 35 years old. A woman’s age plays a large role in conceiving. “We want people to remember a woman’s peak time to conceive is in her teens and early 20s. Our bodies are just built this way,” Dr. Gehlbach says. A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have in her lifetime. And like the rest of the human body, the eggs start to age. By the time a woman is 40, she will only have a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant each month without fertility help.
Couples wanting help with conception shouldn’t wait much longer than a year to be evaluated. There is a real clock ticking. Dr. Gehlbach explains. “It’s a diagnostic test. We simply take a few cells from the embryos to be tested.” Couples wanting help with conception shouldn’t wait much longer than a year to be evaluated. There is a real clock ticking. A couple is considered infertile after one year of unprotected intercourse without getting pregnant, but women over 35 should seek help after only six months of trying. But it’s not always the woman with infertility issues. Men account for half of all infertility problems. And most men do not know they have fertility issues until a semen analysis is performed. Like a woman’s eggs, sperm show a decrease in quality as a man ages, even though that man will continue to make sperm the rest of his life. Couples should have a conversation about when they would like to conceive even if they do not plan on having children immediately. There is a trend for couples to delay children until later in life. So, Dr. Gehlbach recommends couples take care of any underlying medical issues. He also suggests you take a multivitamin every day. “Technology is always improving. We can make things happen,” Dr. Gehlbach says. “As long as you know the chances of getting pregnant, we will give you the opportunity to have a baby. But the sooner we see a couple, the greater the chances of getting pregnant.” Couples cannot control their age but they can control when to get fertility help. The sooner you make an appointment, the sooner Dr. Gehlbach will show you your baby on the ultrasound for the first time. Showing the baby’s heartbeat is his favorite part of the job. He put the odds in his patients’ favor. Some say that really is a miracle.

GOOD TASTES

Remember that chia seed pet infomercial?
Well, turns out chia seeds aren’t just for late-night TV anymore. The chia seed is actually a superfood. The seeds contain crazy amounts of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. One ounce even contains 18 percent of your daily recommended value of calcium.

Chia Seed Pudding Prep time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 per recipe
Ingredients for vanilla pudding
Directions
1-1/4 cup unsweetened unflavored almond or coconut milk 1/3 cup chia seeds 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk vigorously. Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes, stirring halfway through to make sure the chia seeds don’t settle on the bottom of the bowl.
Ingredients for chocolate pudding 1-1/2 cup unsweetened unflavored almond or coconut milk 1/3 cup chia seeds 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Once the 10 minutes are up, serve the pudding with your favorite fresh fruit, granola, or whipped cream (or all of the above!). Keep the pudding covered in the refrigerator. The pudding will keep up to four days in the refrigerator and can be frozen. Note: If you don’t like the texture of the chia seeds, combine the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Farm-raised and city-approved, Samantha Levi grabs inventive and adventurous style when cooking up the goods. A little of this, a little of that. She believes it’s about the art, not the science. And she loves putting her own flair on any recipe that crosses her path.

TRENDS
BY MELANIE KNOPKE Photos / Tulip
You’ve gotten the kids back to school, now it’s time to shop for yourself! Here is a cheat sheet with some of this season’s hottest trends.
this season. We will see it on handbags, shoes, necklaces, and earrings. You will see tassel trim on blouses and fringe on vests and jackets. Fringe embellishments take your boho look to the next level.
‘90s COMEBACK
Channel your inner Shannen Doherty, because the whole Beverly Hills 90210 look is back. Plaid, chokers, denim everything, and romantic floral prints have all been spotted for fall.
BOHO & FRINGE LACE
BOHO
LACE
If you didn’t embrace the bohemian trend last season, now is your chance! Boho chic is back in a major way for fall. We are seeing the return of the bell bottom jean and vests. Tunics and blouses are still the top choice. Boho accessories include long, layered necklaces, and don’t forget the floppy hat!
To go along with the ‘90s comeback, lace is a must-have this season. You will find lace trim on everything from elegant dresses to casual pieces. It is a fabric that you will see dressed up and dressed down. Pair a lace tunic with distressed skinny jeans and a bootie for a more modern look.
FRINGE
It seems that everything is going to have a touch of fringe or tassel trim

This recently renovated museum located on the UMKC campus houses the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the nation’s largest antique toy collections on public display. It will delight kids (and adults) of all ages.
If puppets don’t creep you out, make sure to check out this offbeat museum in Independence. You’ll learn all about the world of puppetry — and you can even create your own dolls. Stay for a show or take some marionette lessons while you’re there.
Formerly known as the State Lunatic Asylum No. 2, this sanitarium in St. Joseph was one of the first medical centers in the country that worked primarily with mental health patients. You’ll see treatment equipment, surgical tools, personal notes from patients, and more.
Whether you’re a child of the ’50s or just curious about the culture from this nostalgic era, this museum offers a look at the technology of the times. Discover futuristic gadgets that have been frozen in time, such as a hidden television, electric-curtain opener, and garage-door opener.
As the name suggests, this museum includes collections of art — including 500 wreaths and 2,000 pieces of jewelry, brooches, locks, and paintings — all made out of hair. You’ll even see pieces containing hair from Queen Victoria, four presidents, and celebrities.
Get a glimpse into frontier life at this museum in the City Market. The Steamboat Arabia sank in 1856. More than 130 years later, treasure-hunters discovered the boat and all of its contents, which were remarkably preserved. You’ll see all of it, including clothing, tools, guns, dishware, jars of preserved fruits and vegetables, on display at the museum.
Built in 1858 as a luxury hotel, Patee House played a role in the Pony Express and the Civil War. The museum features a blacksmith and dressmaker’s shop, model railroads, antique furniture, horse-drawn hearses and a real gallows, a wing designed to look like the streets of St. Joseph in the 1860s, and so much more.
