PUBLISHER’S NOTE

A NEW BEGINNING It seems cliché to view January as a time for reinvention. I’ve never liked the thought of making new year’s resolutions, but after reading Daniel Pink’s new book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, I’ve started to view the practice differently. Pink writes that certain days of the year, month, or week have a “fresh start effect” that boosts our chances of achieving our goals. They allow us to end one period of our lives and begin another with a clean slate. This “offers a chance to start again by relegating our old selves to the past,” he writes. “It disconnects us from that past self’s mistakes and imperfections, and leaves us confident about our new, superior selves.” So go ahead and set those resolutions. If getting healthy is your end-game, flip to page 32 to read about a trainer who comes to you, or page 24 to discover a range of medical spa therapeutic options. If you’re struggling with health-related issues, turn to page 36 to find out if stem-cell therapy is right for you, or page 48 for tips about sustaining mental health during the winter. 2019 is a year of new beginnings for one of SIMPLYkc Magazine’s own as well. After working with the magazine since its inception, our managing editor Ashley Puderbaugh is reducing her role to focus more on her friends and family. Ashley began as a writer and moved her way up to managing editor. She has been integral in ensuring we bring you interesting, insightful articles every month. Maybe even more impressive is that she has kept everyone on top of deadlines and dealt with last-minute changes without skipping a beat. Her smart and fun personality has been an asset to our team. I’m thankful I have not only gotten to know Ashley as a coworker over the past 10 years, but also as a friend. Although she will no longer be helming the magazine, you will occasionally still see Ashley’s name in print. Stepping up to take her place is Brennan Hallock, another longtime contributor for SIMPLYkc Magazine. Brennan is a freelance writer and graphic designer who began writing because of his drive to learn and pass on that knowledge to readers. He says he enjoys writing for the magazine because of the diverse content and subject matter. I have no doubt he will be able to further Ashley’s work and continue to bring you—our loyal readers—a stellar publication. I hope 2019 offers you a fresh start as well, whatever that might involve for you. Cheers to new beginnings!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Brooke Salvaggio Who: BROOKE SALVAGGIO: FARMER, HOMESTEADER, FOOD ACTIVIST
What: Brooke Salvaggio owns and operates URBAVORE Urban Farm with her husband,
Daniel Heryer. It is a biologically diverse, solar-powered farmstead in KC’s urban core. Known for her “sexy” veggies and diehard commitment to good food and good farming, Brooke has been a major player in the local food movement for over a decade. Taste the fruits of her labor every Saturday at the Brookside Farmers’ Market!
Where: FAVORITE
PLACE TO DINE Admittedly, I am an overworked farmermommy. It doesn’t leave a lot of time for eating out (plus, we grow our own food!). But when we do get a “date night,” we head to the original Rm 39 on 39th Street. Chef/owner Ted Habiger keeps it real with rustic, honest cuisine featuring farm-fresh ingredients. FAVORITE DRINK We make our own wine from native Norton grapes. But when hot summer days consume us, we head to Crane Brewery in Raytown. The Beet Sour is off the hook. It is fuchsia pink and oh so refreshing!
FAVORITE SHOPPING I purchase mostly integrity-ridden food from far-out farmers, and for that, there’s no better spot than the Brookside Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings.
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS You’ll find some amazing hiking trails in Swope Park. Ditch your phone and take a walk. It’s important to get unplugged and connect with nature.
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS To the hog pasture! We recently started raising heritage hogs, and there’s no better entertainment. But after sharing a sunset (and a beer) with the hogs, we’d head to Tropicana on KC’s westside for some late-night, homemade Mexican paletas (ice pops). I recommend the pistachio.

AROUND TOWN
KANSAS CITY IN 2030 Written by Julie Burton
Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! This time of year is about looking into the future and leaving last year behind. It’s not easy to predict the future, but we asked Kansas Citians to give it a try. Will 2030 have flying cars? Will you need a driver’s license? What will your industry look like? Maybe cash will be obsolete. What about checks? Will we finally find a cure for cancer?
We asked you, Kansas City ...
What will the year 2030 look like? Our voice will become extinct by 2030. I have laryngitis. I can't go to work or school will not be a valid excuse in 2030. But maybe I have carpal tunnel. How can I possibly communicate? will be excusable. Our “voice” will be our fingers and hands. The dinner table conversation will be texted. We will post that we are at the game rather than yell for our favorite team. Rather than use our voice for conversation in the car, we will text the car where to go. — Jeff Johnson, finance director at Jay Wolfe Acura There will be no cash. Humans won’t drive cars anymore. There won’t be box stores; everything
14
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
will be delivered. Children will still be a pain. Teenagers will still be a bigger pain. The dogs we have now will be dead. Your cat might still be alive, though. We still won’t have those hover boards that zip around like Marty McFly in Back to the Future. Not quite yet. —Tom Crowder, retired Car side windows will be touchable so the kids can watch movies or play video games. Fingerprint recognition will do away with keys. People will perfect drones that fly us everywhere. Fossil fuels will be replaced by renewable solar power. —Jay Fresquez, Taylor Glass
The fitness industry will see a shift toward online training programs and fewer big box gyms. People will still utilize group fitness and boutique studios because they seek connection and relationships, which no screen can ever replace. The business of wellness and health will be automated. Advanced trackers will calculate each calorie and alert us to our body’s exact hydration levels. — Joscelyn Gann, Fusion Fitness instructor As far as the publishing world, I think the future is more audiobooks and podcast serials, where you get a chapter a week. People don’t want to read, more and
more they want to listen. — Jen Mann, author of Working with People I Want to Punch in the Throat I think 2030 will be all robot cars, which will be amazing because it will decrease traffic and accidents. I’m afraid AI is going to continue sneaking in in small ways—like Alexa—until we are in a Will Smith movie. I predict Will Smith will be played by a robot in his next anti-AI movie. —Joah Gordon, homemaker Thirteen years from now ... kind of
scary to think about. I’m not sure about the rest of the world, but my youngest will be 17, so I will finally have a clean house. — Callen Johnson, Johnson Chiropractic and Acupuncture A while back, someone told me my children would be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for tuition. I thought that was far-fetched. I was wrong. My hope is the education system evolves enough to accommodate the technological advances that could deem it either unnecessary or, at minimum, completely virtual.
I’ll be entering my mid-fifties and I’d like to see easier, faster and more energy efficient ways to travel and generate power. Brazil has turned sugar cane into ethanol, so I think that might force oil and gas into our alternative fuel source. But my biggest fear—with technology at our fingertips and the answers in the palms of our hands, people will rely on God far less, which in my opinion is not something we can afford to replace. — Amie Pluff, management liability underwriter

EMERGENCY ROOM OR URGENT CARE? How to Know Where to Go for Sudden Health Care Needs Recognizing the differences between “emergency” and “urgent” can be confusing, especially if the symptoms seem severe and your regular doctor’s office is closed.
and every medical situation. They are fully staffed with Board-certified ER physicians, and have ancillary staffing, which means access to a laboratory and radiology, along with surgical and medical consultants. And while urgent care clinics offer longer hours than most primary care doctors, ERs are open 24/7, 365 days a year. Of course, any medical intervention is better than none, so don’t hesitate to reach out to any emergency option if something doesn’t feel right. And it’s always best to be extra cautious with kids. If your child is having difficulty breathing, turning blue or having a seizure, get him or her to the ER right away. Even if you’re not 100 percent sure it’s a true emergency, it’s best to play it safe and go to the ER. “If you’re 12 and you have a cough, that’s urgent care,” says Dr. Bradley. “But if you’re 12 and you’re having trouble breathing, that’s ER.”
After all, both “emergency” and “urgent” indicate a medical need that must be addressed quickly. But there are important differences between hospital emergency rooms and traditional urgent care clinics, including the level of care that can be provided at each. “The biggest confusion centers around the definition of ‘emergency,’” says John Bradley, DO, Emergency Medicine, AdventHealth. “For example, if it’s something you would typically have treated by your primary care doctor, then you should probably go to an urgent care location. In other words,
go to urgent care if there isn’t immediate danger.” You can turn to urgent care for cuts that require stitches, skin rashes or infections, sprains, strains, or mild asthma issues. Common symptoms like fever, the flu, ear pain, sinus pressure, and sore throat are also treated.
Remember, whether you’re going to an urgent care or the ER, it’s a good idea to bring a list of all the medications you take, including over-the-counter medicine, vitamins, and supplements. Your list should include how much of each medication you take, along with how often you take it.
“But for anything that’s life-threatening or limb-threatening,” says Dr. Bradley, “you should go straight to the emergency room.”
AdventHealth, formerly Shawnee Mission Health, offers a wide network of emergency room and urgent care locations throughout Johnson County.
Unlike typical urgent care clinics, emergency rooms can handle any

KACIE SHOULD YOUR MIDDLE SCHOOLER HAVE A PHONE AT SCHOOL?
My daughter's middle school said no phones in the school. I don't like the thought of not being able to get a hold of her. Should I bring it up with the school or let it go?
Whoa! (I’m waving glow sticks over my head.) Land that helicopter here! Slow. Slow. There you go. Hop out and let’s chat. I agree you should be keeping up communication with your daughter. Parents need to evolve in communication as their kids do. The days of heart-to-heart Danny Tanner chats are gone. It’s every parent’s personal decision when to get their child a cell phone. You should hold off on phones as long as possible, but middle school is about the average time when kids get a phone. Or at least, start begging for a phone. My word of advice is trust the professionals. I assume you are concerned about getting a hold of your daughter in an event of an emergency. You’re not so much worried about letting your daughter know what’s for dinner while she’s in math class. The schools our children attend are much different than previous generations. Teachers know this, so trust the teachers. They are trained to handle emergency situations. If your daughter’s school says no phones, then no phones. It’s best you follow the school’s policy. Let your daughter start a rebellion, not you.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

LOCAL DUO SEES SUCCESS FLIPPING HOUSES “IT’S NOT AS GLAMOROUS AS IT LOOKS ON TV, BUT IT IS REWARDING WORK” Does knocking down walls and creating new spaces in existing homes get your blood pumping? Have you found yourself binge-watching HGTV’s home makeover shows? Is the magnetic strip on your Home Depot card faltering? Maybe you have what it takes to flip houses. There’s more than meets the TV-watching eye when it comes to the business, though. Take it from local flippers Tim Cahalan and Mark Fisher. “We’re definitely not as exciting as the guys on the shows,” says Cahalan. “And it’s a lot more work than we expected. But it’s fun to have success with it.” The two full-time electrical engineers and college buddies had the idea to start flipping houses when they were discussing the costs of
22
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
putting their kids through college. They felt they could do some serious remodeling and bring real value to properties, rather than just paint the walls and clean up the yard, as some “flippers” do.
Chip Gaines. “We’ve picked up a lot of cool things to try from the shows, especially when it comes to open concepts,” Cahalan says. “But it’s harder than it looks, especially at first.”
They paired with a local real estate agent and purchased their first two properties: in Fairway and Prairie Village. Both properties were a success, and FC (Fisher-Cahalan) Holdings, Inc., was officially born. Five years into their business, Cahalan says they average two or three flips a year.
Most people who begin flipping houses feel similarly. A recent New York Times article by Ronda Kaysen suggests potential flippers should take such shows with a grain of salt. “Where a show might describe a six-week renovation schedule from start to finish, the real world moves at a slower pace,” writes Kaysen. You could spend a month with the architect before ever starting any work. All the while, you are paying property taxes, insurance, and interest on a mortgage or construction loan.
Cahalan and Fisher don’t limit themselves to one style, but do tend to focus on the “modern farmhouse” look, featuring big, open spaces, the use of salvaged architectural pieces like sliding barn doors, farmhouse sinks, and vintage-inspired plumbing. Fisher and Cahalan say they were inspired by previous costars of HGTV’s “Fixer Upper” Joanna and
Although the learning curve at the start was steep, Cahalan says after five years, he and Fisher have discovered a few “secrets to success” they want to share with anyone looking to get into the business.
1.
Know the property (or hire someone who does). When Cahalan and Fisher first started, they worked through an established local real estate agent who knew which properties had the potential to be flipped successfully. Over time, they learned to recognize diamonds in the rough themselves, but it took a lot of hands-on work.
2.
Have a student mindset. From permits and contracts to the actual physical labor, there’s a lot more to learn than you think. Start smaller than you probably want to, be patient, and take good notes.
3.
Consider getting your real estate and contractor’s licenses. Once you know what to look for and what makes a good potential flip, you can skip the middleman and be pickier about your properties while earning even more.
After devoting so much time and energy to the creative project of renovating a house, does Cahalan warn against becoming attached to a property? “You know, it’s really a love-hate kind of thing,” he says with a laugh. “At the end, there’s just this huge push to get it finished, and by the time it’s done, I’m ready to let someone else have it. But there’s a lot of satisfaction in the work—in buying a junky old house and turning it into something cool.”

It’s often a transformative moment for the person, who may have struggled for years with a health issue—including conditions that affect self-confidence—before finding Dr. Chambon and Reflections Body Solutions. “I’d been thinking about doing this for two years, and I went to three different places before finding Dr. Chambon,” says patient Kathleen Cannady, referring to her body contouring procedure. “He’s the only one who didn’t try to sell me something I didn’t want. I could tell he actually cared about me and he helped me reach my goals.”
DISCOVERING WHAT’S POSSIBLE Reflections Body Solutions medical spa provides a wide range of leading services including Smart Liposuction and hair restoration for men and women. With over 30 years of experience as a board certified family practice physician, Dr. Chambon has developed a finely tuned ability to listen to his patients and treat them with their goals in mind. Becoming a doctor was Chambon’s goal from a young age. “It’s something I wanted to do since at least middle school. Although my parents would tell you it was before that,” he says with a smile. “I just had an interest in my own doctor’s care and appreciated what they were doing.” Dr. Chambon and his team pride themselves on offering the latest technology and leading-edge procedures that aren’t found anywhere else. For example, the team at Reflections was the first in Dr. Greg Chambon has over 30 years of experience as a board certified family practice physician.

the area to offer Smart Lipo, and have been performing the procedure for over 12 years. This laser-assisted liposuction uses local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia, making it safer than traditional liposuction. This gives certain populations access to liposuction who may have been excluded in the past due to age or health risk. During the procedure, the target area is numbed and a laser wand is used to melt fat before it’s aspirated, making it easier and safer to remove.
“People don’t want to look really different or be asked if they’ve had work done—they want to be told they look refreshed and healthy.”
“People are looking for a more natural solution to reach their goals, and we offer them that,” Dr. Chambon says. “It’s about taking care of yourself and feeling your best. I think everyone should have that.”
Reflections Body Solutions offers a number of leading-edge services, including Smart Liposuction, hair restoration, PDO Thread Lift, and more.
Another service offered by Reflections is PDO Thread Lift, which was featured on the popular TV show The Doctors. This non-surgical facelift uses absorbable threads inserted in small needle holes to lift areas of the face and neck. As the threads dissolve, collagen is produced along them for a residual effect. The procedure is painless, the results are instant, and there is no downtime. “The patient is awake and comfortable, so they can help guide me to produce the exact results they’re looking for,” says Dr. Chambon. “These days, it’s a more natural look. People don’t want to look really different or be asked if they’ve had work done—they want to be told they look refreshed and healthy.” “I have so much more self-confidence now,” says patient Kathleen Cannady. “My clothes fit better—I even walk differently. I wouldn’t recommend any other place or any other doctor.” Reflections Body Solutions also offers facials, chemical peels, IPL laser treatments, as well as the FDA-approved miraDry for permanent underarm sweat reduction and the Ultra Femme 360 non-invasive vaginal rejuvenation for women who suffer from urinary incontinence or leaking. Reflections’ full treatment menu and detailed procedure descriptions can be found at reflectionsbodysolutions.com.
Other services offered by the team at Reflections Body Solutions include facials, chemical peels, IPL laser treatments, miraDry, and Ultra Femme 360.

TRAVELING TRAINERS MASTERS FITNESS CHALLENGES Written by TE Cunningham / Photos by Jami Marshall
It’s the moment you’re supposed to jump up and head for the gym. Your alarm clock is ringing, but it’s dark outside, you’re tired, and you feel unmotivated. We’ve all had this experience. But if you are looking for a new way to be inspired to become a better you, consider this: Traveling Trainers brings the workout to you, along with plenty of inspiration and support. Based in Lenexa, Traveling Trainers is helping Kansas Citians adapt to their own fitness challenges, whether those are making time to work out, addressing nutrition, overcoming an injury or adapting to a disability.
Marshall continues to train clients even while he manages the company. “I will always be involved in training because I love it. It also helps me stay ‘hands-on’ and witness emerging needs and how the company may address them,” he explains.
Jacory Marshall founded the company in 2014 with the focus on helping traveling business people stay in shape. He then relaunched the company in 2017 with a broader focus. Along with four other trainers, the NESTA (National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association) certified fitness team customizes each program to the client with a focus on the mind, body, and spirit.
“Jacory has changed our lives,” says client Brandy Smith. “I’ve lost 13 pounds in two months.” Smith had gained 20 pounds after a year filled with surgeries from breast cancer. She had also lost much of her upper body strength. “It has been really awesome. The service is inexpensive and so worth it!” she adds.

KANSAS REGENERATIVE MEDICINE CENTER: HEALING YOUR BODY WITH YOUR BODY Written by Brennan Hallock
Vicki Sutcliffe struggled with knee pain and limited mobility. She visited several places in KC that claimed they could treat her pain, but she came away from each one feeling uneasy about the treatments. One left her feeling as though she had visited a used-car salesman and another used amniotic fluid that was shipped in and came from someone else. “Why would I put something in me from somebody else when I don’t know what kind of diseases or anything they had?” she wondered. She didn’t want a knee replacement; her husband had gone through that and she had seen how difficult it can be. But she also wanted to not only treat her pain, but restore her mobility. A friend recommended Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center. “They were so great,” Sutcliffe says. “I had a list of questions to talk to them about. I was talking to the doctor, and he answered all the questions the way I wanted to hear them.” Sutcliffe went through with the treatment and says she doesn’t have the fear of going up and down stairs

anymore. “I was crippled before, and I’m not now,” she explains. “It just went very well, and I got better and better. Just within a week I knew, ‘Oh my gosh! This is so much better.’” Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center helped Sutcliffe’s own body heal itself through a process known as adipose-derived stem cell therapy. This complicated-sounding procedure actually is quite simple for the patient. Doctors remove cells from your adipose tissue (fat)—typically around the waist—and transplant them into the joint or ligament being treated. These stem cells—known as adult mesenchymal stem cells or progenitor cells and other growth factors—seek the injured area and regenerate and repair damaged
cells in that location. This speeds up your body’s natural process of healing itself. Unlike a knee replacement, this method of treating a joint is not a major surgery. The whole process typically takes about four hours and involves only a small incision and an injection or two. You most likely will be able to return to work within a day or two. “It’s using your own body to heal your body,” explains Kate Farley, director of marketing and patient education for Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center. “Knee replacement is always an option, but once you get a knee replacement, you can’t go back. This is an option to look into before you take that step.”
The staff at Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center.
“Doctors remove cells from your fat tissue or bone marrow and transplant them into the joint or ligament being treated. These stem cells seek the injured area and regenerate and repair damaged cells in that location, speeding up your body’s natural process of healing itself.” Adipose or bone marrow derived stem cell therapy is a simple and safe procedure. “There’s no chance of rejection or graft versus host disease or anything like that because it’s your own body,” Farley explains. And you won’t have to schedule any follow-up procedures or take ongoing prescriptions. “We want people to go on and live their life pain-free,” she says. The doctors are pragmatic about the procedure when discussing it with patients. “We tell you the percentage of the success rate for your specific pro-
cedure at the beginning,” Farley says. “We let you know there’s a chance it might not work or maybe it won’t give you the exact results you want. We don’t want to give you false hope. But we get reports back constantly from our patients and hear these amazing stories from people. It’s incredible!” PASSION CREATED BY EXPERIENCE Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center was founded by lifelong friends John Farley and Ken Woods because of their own powerful experiences. They
both tried knee surgeries to fix their painful joints, but without success. They then learned about adipose-derived stem cell therapy after an acquaintance was successfully treated. Farley and Woods had such successful recoveries, they decided to bring this method of healing to Kansas. Prior to opening their first location in Manhattan, Kansas, the closest office doing this kind of therapy was in Beverly Hills, California. Fortunately, this therapy is closer to home now. Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center recently opened in Overland Park. People would travel from all over the country to visit the Manhattan location. But being closer to a major airport and in a large city is helpful to those traveling for treatment. “We are excited to bring this technology to the local Kansas City area as well,” Farley shares. Kansas Regenerative Medicine Center is located at 6650 W. 110th St., Suite 210 in Overland Park. Get in touch at 913.800.7555 or info@kansasrmc.com / website: kansasrmc.com.

PARENTING
By Deborah Eakin Osborne
living that goes beyond proper nutrition and regular activity. Whole-life fitness requires you to be healthy in the following areas of your life: •F ood: How you eat (nutritional fitness) •M ove: How you exercise (physical fitness) •M ood: How you respond to your emotions (emotional fitness) •R echarge: How you relax and rest (restorative fitness)
GET A JUMP ON RAISING HEALTHY KIDS According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, when one parent is obese, children have a 50 percent chance of becoming obese themselves. But when the family’s activities include exercise on a regular basis, everybody has a better chance of being healthy. So if you want to instill lifelong healthy habits in your kids, the “do as I say, not as I do” model just doesn’t cut it. Taking care of yourself sends the message that you value your own well-being as much as theirs. When you think of what it means to be healthy, eating a well-balanced diet and maintaining a lifestyle that includes regular exercise may be the first things that come to mind. But Chris Tiongson, MD,

a pediatrician with Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota, with a special interest in overweight children and childhood obesity, asserts that being healthy includes achieving balance among mind, body, and spirit. We all want to have a positive impact on our children, including establishing healthy habits that will last a lifetime. But oftentimes this task is easier said than done. Thankfully, resources are available to help parents in need of a little inspiration.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO FIT LIVING WebMD, together with its educational partner, Sanford Health, has created the FIT platform that gives families a structure from which to work in their quest to achieve balance and become healthier. The FIT platform (fit.webmd.com) combines four aspects of life to create a holistic approach to fit
Sanford Health certified life educator Ronda Rose-Kayser understands it can be a bit overwhelming for families who want to make changes but don’t know where or how to begin. She says that breaking the process down into these four key areas of life helps provide a focus and a foundation for goal-setting starting with making small, healthy choices.
GET THEM MOVING Body-soul fitness experts Brant Secunda and Mark Allen teach worldwide seminars offering creative ideas and advice for improving health and well-being. When it comes to motivating kids, they suggest parents keep a few things in mind: •M ost young kids prefer activities such as a bike ride over conventional exercise such as running around a track. •O lder kids might be more willing to engage in fitness activities with their parents if they can bring along a friend.
• M any kids are motivated by goals, keeping track of their progress, and a little friendly competition. Secunda and Allen recommend parents pay attention to the sorts of activities their children naturally enjoy so fitness comes easy to them. Additionally, they offer the following tips for incorporating exercise into your family routine in ways that are fun, motivating, and healthy: • Remember to start small. Trying to do too much too soon decreases motivation. The completion of the task is what’s important, not the size of the task itself. If it’s difficult to get your kids moving at first, keep the time short. If you tell them you only
want to go for a five-minute bike ride, it just might turn into 10. • Schedule family activities when everyone’s together, such as after school or after dinner. Asking one of your children’s friends to join you may even make them more willing to participate. • Give each of your kids the opportunity to choose the family’s activity for a week, and rotate so everyone gets a chance to choose. Anything that gets the family moving together, such as walking the family dog, counts as exercise.
hit the bowling alley the next day. Or try something you’ve never done before, like geocaching, a scavenger hunt using GPS coordinates to find hidden prizes. •T ry to get the family outside as often as possible, even in winter. One way to do this is to swap an indoor activity with one that’s outdoors. Not only will the exercise make everyone feel better, but fresh air and sunshine are mood-boosters as well. Find winter activities your kids enjoy that will get them outdoors, such as skiing or sledding.
• Remember to mix up your activities. If you go for a walk one day,

DISCOVERING THE POWER OF NUTRITION We all have stories that shake us— stories that cause us to search. In the end, they are the stories that change us. In April 2018, Samantha Levi Frisbie learned that her grandmother, the woman who helped raise her and shape who she is today, was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. When the genetic reports came back, her grandmother had tested negative for 46 genes, indicating that her cancer was environmental, not genetic. This motivated Frisbie to search for the cause, eventually helping her discover her love for health coaching. “I’m a big ‘why’ person,” says Frisbie. “After my grandma’s diagnosis, I went down the rabbit hole of health and nutrition. Why are we getting diseases and cancer? Doctors tell you it’s nutrition, but no one wants to listen. Nutrition is our preventative now if we pay attention to it. Nutrition will stretch our life.”

People like easy and convenient. We like our health to fit within our busy lifestyles. If it is inconvenient or expensive, then we don’t make it a priority. What’s actually expensive and inconvenient, though, is not having quality of life. Being overweight, developing an autoimmune disorder, or getting cancer is expensive. The prevention starts now, not when you are sick. Choices must be sustainable or else they don’t work. Different bodies shed fat differently, so sometimes it can take 60, 90, or 120 days to see results. Just because you don’t see something in the first 30 days doesn’t mean your body isn’t changing. We are often our own worst critics. This is why Frisbie insists on a before photo, measurements, and scale. To help understand how individual our bodies are, Frisbie
takes pictures of her clients from all angles. Some people may lose fat in their back before they notice the fat on their stomach disappear. Photos help you see the change. It takes time for you to see where you are losing fat. When Frisbie first started on her journey, she used herself as a human guinea pig. She decided to use the cause and effect method. By truly listening to what her body was telling her, she was able to learn how to become healthier. Red flags such as fatigue, headaches, or bloating indicated that something was wrong with her diet. We are often too stubborn to listen to these signs, though, and we like to pass them off as normal or take a pill for them. Frisbie found out that when she cut dairy, it cleared her cystic acne. She also learned that gluten tends to make her feel heavy and tired. “It didn’t click until April. I started to wake up and do research. Does this work? What is this? After 30 days, I found I have an aversion to coffee. I don’t want or crave dairy. I’m wanting less meat. It’s an interesting thing to not want something or crave something anymore. If I’m craving something, I eat it. I do splurge, especially if it’s handmade. You can’t restrict yourself. We’re human.” We are all different, and what works for one person may not work for you. That is why Frisbie stresses listening to your own body and letting it answer your questions. By doing this, you can lead by example and start integrating healthier choices into your life now. It doesn’t have to be overnight, but as long as you are aware and intentional in your mindset, you will be successful.

GOOD TASTES
The first thing my grandmother taught me about cooking was that the magic ratio of oil to vinegar is 3 to 1. I’ve had this rule ingrained in my mind since I was 9 years old. From there, she said, you can grab simple pantry items and create whatever your heart desires. A little of this, a little of that, and poof!—you have something so simple your friends will keep asking what’s in it. For salads, I always source what’s in season and create from there. Items for this recipe were sourced locally. Use this recipe as your base, and create or subtract seasonal ingredients on top of that for whatever your taste buds yearn for.

BECAUSE I SAID SO ...
SNITCHES GET STITCHES If you’re a parent—especially a parent of more than one child—these words have probably come from your mouth: I don’t want to hear it unless someone is dying. Stop tattling on your sisters. But did you die, son? Did you? No one likes a gossip. Parents don’t like tattletales. Even the Supreme Court doesn’t like hearsay. And no one likes snitches. Because snitches get stitches. The beauty of becoming an adult is you’re an adult. Anything you say or do is none of your parents’ concern. You may ask for advice, but they are not required to save the day. You can tell them as little or as much about your life as you want.

If you get arrested as an adult, no one will give your parents a sideeye for their parenting techniques. If you don’t pay your taxes, that’s your problem. If you eat candy for breakfast, more power to you and your waistline. Your parents won’t tell you no. Scott and I live with a snitch. At 37 years old, we still get snitched on to our parents. Her name is Kate. She’s nine. When something doesn’t go her way, she tells our parents. “Mom, can I see your phone? Hello? Nana? Your son threw a curveball at me and it hit my chest. You need to yell at him. He hurt me. He told me to deal with it and this is how I’m dealing with it. Do you want to talk to him?” “But why can’t I eat the candy? Your dad said I can eat it whenever I want. You have to listen to your dad. That’s what you always tell me. Where’s your phone? I’m going to have your dad tell you again.” “Dad, can I see your phone? Hello? Papa? Will you come over here and pick me up? I want donuts for
breakfast. Your son is being lazy. He won’t get out of bed and feed his daughter breakfast.” “Um, did your parents see this picture of you drinking sangria in Spain when you were in high school? I’m telling your mom what you did on spring break.” Snitches get stitches. Snitches get called out in January’s issue of SIMPLYkc Magazine. Written with permission from Kate Burton, age 9. She said Kansas City needs to know our parenting ways aren’t working with her.

APP OF THE MONTH
SEND POSTCARDS FROM ANYWHERE, ANYTIME The gist: In the age of email and text messaging, it’s nice to get a real note from a loved one every once in a while. Sending those notes has become easier thanks to the TouchNote smartphone app. TouchNote lets you create a postcard or greeting card using photos from your camera roll. It then prints and mails the card for you. Simply choose the picture you’d like, reposition it or zoom in, add a caption to the photo, enter the recipient’s address (which is then saved for future cards), type out a quick note, and send it off. TouchNote started out as a desktop application, but the mobile app makes it easy to share a postcard (or greeting card) from any location. Postcards cost $2.99 each (less if you buy in bulk) and arrive within three to five working days in the U.S. The app is free for both Android and Apple phones.

1 Soak up the sun rays. Sunlight
releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. So if you can’t make it outside for a short walk, open your blinds and sit closer to the windows at home or in the office.
2 Get moving. Exercise promotes neural growth and new activity patterns in your brain, which increases feelings of calm and well-being. Working out also serves as a great distraction.
TO BOOST MENTAL HEALTH IN WINTER
3 Stay connected with friends.
Remaining social during the winter months can help decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness.
4 Help someone in need. Not only does generosity reduce stress, support your physical health, enhance your sense of purpose and naturally fight depression, but it also is shown to increase one's lifespan.
5 Embrace the season. Take ad-

6 Wake up with dawn simulators.
Rather than abruptly waking up to loud music or beeping, dawn simulators produce a gradual increase in intensity, just like the sun.

Just amazing! The beauty and quality of the dresses is truly impressive but more so, the customer service and attention I received was by far the best I’ve experienced! Sara was so incredibly helpful! She went above and beyond to listen attentively to my vision of the perfect dress, gave great guidance and made me feel at ease during this stressful time. I’m so very grateful! Even Emily herself came over to help. Thank you so much for your hard work in providing a beautiful boutique with exceptional lady’s making brides dreams come true. -Stacy K.
