PUBLISHER’S NOTE
THAT’S A WRAP! As we see an end to 2019 and prepare to enter a new decade, it seems like an apt time to reflect on the past 11 months. This year, we at SIMPLYkc Magazine have welcomed a handful of new writers and several new advertisers. I’m especially excited about our new partnership with Will Brown of Will Brown Interiors. Not only is Will our resident style expert, but he shares how design details can make all the difference and go a long way toward telling your personal story. We also had to say goodbye to our previous managing editor, Ashley Puderbaugh, who worked with the magazine for over six years, and welcome a new managing editor, Brennan Hallock. We want to thank Ashley for her wonderful work with SIMPLYkc, both as an editor and a writer. She will be missed. It has been a lot of fun working with a creative team filled with passion, grace, and limitless talent, whether they are writing the stories, designing the magazine, or meeting our readers and advertisers in the community. I love the inside look at the city, people, and events that being publisher affords me. But it’s all because of you, our dear readers, that we get to work on this wonderful magazine each month. I am so thankful for you. I hope you have enjoyed everything we’ve offered you this year, and hope you continue to join us every month in 2020 as we feature local people, local places, and lots of local flavor. Happy holidays, from all of us at SIMPLYkc Magazine. May the season find you and your family abundantly joyful.

ROCKING AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREES WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY CEDAR VALLEY FOREST
Christmastime is a time for family tradition, and Kansas City is home to many Christmas tree farms. Hauling a fake tree from storage isn’t particularly fun or nostalgic, so we asked our readers where they get their real Christmas trees. Here are their answers (hint: it’s not Costco).
Kansas Midland Holiday Pines 18541 Midland Dr., Shawnee, KS Midlandholidaypines.com Facebook.com/midlandholidaypines
It’s not a secret you city dwellers love the city for its convenience. You don’t have to drive far to Midland Holiday Pines—it’s the closest Christmas tree farm to the city. This family-owned seven acre farm has been wildly successful in the Kansas City area since 1994. The care and attention to the native scotch pine trees plays a role in their quality. “Trees do not naturally grow up to

They don’t reach peak maturity until six to seven years after planting.” Families are welcome to cut their own tree with the hand saws provided or have a pick of the fraser firs brought from Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Carolina. Midland Holiday Pines also has a small shop selling wreaths and offering free hot chocolate and hot cider. Hay rides are available if weather permits. Open on weekends 10 a.m.-5 p.m. until the end of the season or supplies run out.

But if you’re hesitant to cut your own, the Christmas Ranch Tree Farm employees will cut, shake, bag, and place your tree on your vehicle for you. In the barn, you will find wreaths as well as one-of-a-kind baskets, centerpieces, and wood ornaments from the Northwest and Tennessee. Homemade cookies and a family recipe hot cider are provided. The Christmas Ranch Tree Farm participates in the Trees for Troops program every year as well. LET TRAVEL INFLUENCE YOUR HOME DESIGN WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY WILL BROWN
W
ill Brown created his company as a quest to rescue those in decorating and design distress. He aspires to guide them along their design journey and help them discover their way home. Brown’s own journey has impacted his design process as well, though. After celebrating a milestone birthday this year and attending a twoday workshop on finding your life’s purpose, Brown made a significant life choice. He says he is not an avid entrepreneur, but design is his love and he saw a niche in the market for this kind of small business. Will Brown Interiors launched this spring and is growing, bringing him daily fulfillment. Through the belief that a wellappointed space should be a familiar backdrop that allows life’s best moments to take center stage, he encourages clients to look at things that are influential in their life and let these lead them to their decorating choices. One of his personal motivators—and something that strikes an emotional chord with most clients— is travel. “A space should feel collected with items that resonate with your personal experiences, beauty, and craftsmanship, and be imbued with a story with deeper meaning,” advises Brown.
The beauty of travel Brown was brought up in a military family attending school on army bases in Asia and Europe before settling in the U.S. He is the child of two distinct

cultures and ethnicities (South Korean and African American), and he credits this upbringing and his travels with influencing his design aesthetic. Most recently, his travels have focused him on tile and stone. The tile industry has a lot of innovation—new glazes, textures, cuts, shapes, and material designs—and he believes using travel for inspiration is very helpful. “Italy is well known for the richness and beauty of their marble,” says Katy Gwin, showroom sales manager at Sunderland Brothers Co., a tile store in Kansas City. “However, there’s beautiful stone all over the world. Many of the most soughtafter natural stones can be found in India, Brazil, and Turkey as well.” Japan is next on Brown’s list of places to travel for design inspiration. His travels recently took him to the Italian Amalfi Coast and Portugal, where he and a group of other designers immersed themselves in the local culture and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. He fell in love with the history of Portugal, how warm and inviting the locals are, and the beauty of the cities. Brown was able to bring these experiences back home, where he worked with a couple of clients who were remodeling their kitchen and master bath. He allowed his travels and his clients’ experiences to create a backdrop for life’s best
moments, using them to improve his client’s home. “I gravitated to old-world tiles and I could introduce them to the history and beauty from where this design originated, and share stories which emotionally invested them in the project,” he explains.
Timeless design on a budget For the budget-conscious, materials can be economical but still beautiful and efficient. Amy Sanders, owner of International Materials of Design Tile & Stone, steers her clients toward making good, long-term design decisions.
“I always recommend to never compromise quality,” explains Sanders. “Even on a budget, there are still quality tiles. For example, it doesn’t save for someone to find cheap porcelain and then find there are no matching trim pieces available. Also, if someone goes with natural stone, they might pay more for that particular tile but will find that trims aren’t required because the installer can file down the stone on-site.” Sanders adds, “Most ceramics and porcelains require trim pieces, and those alone can drive up the budget. In the end, less really can be more. A beauticontinued on page 16

ful natural stone in one size all over a bathroom can be timeless and worth every penny. There’s nothing worse than when someone tries to dress up a cheap ceramic with layers of more cheap accents creating a design that doesn’t work and won’t stand the test of time.” Brown says another thing to take into consideration is whether your current home is your “forever home,” or if you’ll be selling at some point in the near future. If it is not your forever home, the design should consider resale value. However, he advises not to get stuck in the beige and neutral zones. If you want to try something unique, take a small risk and try a room where there is less traffic. Personality can come from the powder room. You can simply use a favorite trend color or a tile accent wall without challenging your budget. You may surprise yourself on what you fall in love with and leave a lasting impression with your guests.

BETH HOUTS PHOTOGRAPHY SHARES THE BEAUTY OF A MOMENT WITH KANSAS CITY WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK
Beth Houts’ love of photography began as a teenager in a dark room, but even though the technology of photography has left behind the days of the dark room, her love for the art of photography has not changed. Being a photographer involves adapting to a constantly advancing industry, but there are some things about her photography that Houts has not had to change. These include her passion for capturing a genuine moment, her love of telling beautiful stories through her images, and her drive to make her clients happy. Houts did not go directly into photography, though. She first worked in the pharmaceutical industry. But throughout her time working at a pharmaceutical company, photography remained her love, and finally in 2014 she made the decision to enter full-time photography. “It’s always been my hobby and my passion— something I love to do,” says Houts. “I’ve always wanted to do it as my job, and my husband gave me the push I needed to take the risk.” Houts began by doing portraits, then in 2016 added art shows. She makes art pieces from her wildlife photos using old windows. She breaks out the glass and refurbishes them by doing an oil rub, then adds her images printed on canvas so each results in a one-of-a-kind art piece. This process of turning a moment into a piece of art is one of the aspects that appealed most to Houts and caused her to leave behind her previous career. “I love the whole process of creating something and having an end product in my hand that I can give to someone,” she explains. “I see people have so much joy when they take my work home with them. That is very fulfilling to me. I wanted to have that feeling on a regular basis versus grinding every day for someone else in a corporate job.”

I love the whole process of creating something and having an end product in my hand that I can give to someone. Houts also began creating cityscapes of the city she loves—Kansas City. She is able to tell stories about her city through the photos she takes. “I love Kansas City. I don’t think there’s anywhere else like it where
Her city-scapes have become popular, even displayed in some buildings in downtown Kansas City. She recently had five large pieces added to the OGGI Lofts on Central St. There is a piece on each floor showing different parts of the Kansas City area. She also recently won a contract with the Loews Kansas City Hotel scheduled to open in spring 2020. This hotel is connected with the convention center, and she will have six pieces on the Mezzanine floor. Houts says she believes the cityscapes have become so popular because of residents’ loyalty to the city. “Everyone who lives here loves it and they want a piece of it in their home,” she explains. The reasons Houts has become so successful in her work are not only her artistic skills and style. She has also become successful because of her drive to make her clients happy. “When I first talk to a client, I tell them that the goal is to have fun creating whatever they have a vision for. I usually have a conversation with them to help them relax,” she says. “A lot of people don’t feel comfortable in front

One of Houts’ clients said that she has an amazing eye for beauty and detail. “What Beth captures with her camera are fleeting seconds of grace and wonder. She also did my son’s senior pic-

The attention to detail is really what made them superb.” Whether it is because of her attention to detail, her ability to capture a beautiful moment, her love of telling stories through her images, or her dedication to making her clients happy, Houts has found a way to share her art with the city and people she loves.

HOW YOU CAN
RECOGNIZE, MANAGE, AND PREVENT A STROKE WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER / PHOTO BY ADVENTHEALTH SHAWNEE MISSION
Strokes are the leading cause of adult disability and the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S. They can happen at any age, so it’s important to know the warning signs and what to expect after one has occurred. •S peech difficulty: They may have slurred speech or be difficult to understand. •T ime to call 911: With any of these symptoms, it’s important to call for emergency help immediately. Other common symptoms can include weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden vision loss or changes, and vertigo or headache. Patients may realize something is wrong, but often family and friends are more aware of the sudden changes in speech patterns, instability, or confusion.
Testing and Diagnosis
While strokes and heart attacks are often mentioned together, strokes actually attack the brain rather than the heart.
you can minimize damage and even save a life.
“A stroke happens when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off and deprives brain cells of the oxygen they need to survive,” says Heath Wilt, DO, cardiologist with AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “When brain cells die during a stroke, a person loses functionality controlled by that area of the brain—sometimes permanently.”
The American Heart Association uses the acronym FAST to educate the public about the signs of a stroke and the need for emergency care. FAST stands for the following:
Time is of the essence when it comes to strokes. By recognizing the signs quickly and seeking emergency care,
Symptoms of a Stroke
• Facial droop: One side of the face is lopsided or numb. If you ask the person to smile, one side may droop. • Arm weakness: One arm may be weak or numb. If you ask the person to raise both arms, one arm may drop lower.
A CT or CAT scan is often the first test to look for signs of a stroke since it’s quick to complete and available in most hospitals. Sometimes an MRI is required for more information or to confirm a stroke. During this time, most patients receive aspirin to help stabilize any blood flow blockage to the brain. If a stroke is recognized early, medication can be given to prevent damage to the brain. “One of the biggest reasons for educating others about the signs of stroke is that the effects may be reversed or minimized when patients are candidates for tPA, or ‘clot busters,’ which may eliminate the blockage of blood flow to the brain causing the event,” says Dr. Wilt.

BE WELL CONT.
Side Effects of a Stroke Because a stroke can cause brain cells to die, patients may have physical complications. If a stroke is untreated, the patient can lose the ability to speak, walk, or perform tasks independently. “Depending on where the stroke occurred in the brain, a patient may experience paralysis,” says Dr. Wilt. “Other side effects from a stroke can include sensory issues, such as impaired vision, inability to taste, a tingling or numbing sensation, or memory impairment.” Sometimes, the patient can improve or even fully recover through rehabilitation exercises, explains Dr. Wilt. Patients in therapy may take weeks, months, or even years to recover.
“Advances in rehabilitation services have made tremendous impact in recovery,” says Dr. Wilt. “A combination of physical, occupational, and speech therapy is standard after a stroke to reduce long-term effects or symptoms and improve recovery potential.”
Preventing Strokes According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 80 percent of strokes could be prevented through lifestyle management and education. “Most people know how to reduce the risk of a heart attack,” says Dr. Wilt. “Almost all of those recommended lifestyle changes are the same to minimize the risk of stroke.”

OUTDOORSY THINGS TO DO IN WINTER
1 Lace up your skates and hit the ice. Whether you’re attempting
jumps or holding on for dear life by scooting along the edge, ice skating is a great lower-body workout. It is low-impact and improves your balance and coordination as well. There are ice skating rinks in Leawood and Crown Center in downtown Kansas City.
2 T ry your luck at Suicide Hill. Located off East 57th St. and
Brookside Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri, Suicide Hill is one of the most popular sledding hills in the city. Other options include Leawood Pioneer Library (117th St. and Roe Ave.), Waterworks Park (Northeast 32nd St. and North Oak Trafficway), next to Lowes (13750 S. Blackbob Rd.), and Stump Park (47th St. and Woodland Ave.).

5 Try your hand at curling.
This Olympic team sport played by two teams of four players on an ice

KACIE THE GIFT DILEMMA
Every year, the holidays drown me financially. I’m pretty good at cutting back on presents with my own family. The problem is the teachers, bus drivers, office white elephant exchanges, extended family, and more. I can’t spread myself so thin. How do I tell people I can’t give so many gifts this year when it’s so expected?
I wish you would have asked this in November. Maybe even October. Or last January! Really that’s what it takes for most people to save up for the holidays without going into debt. The holidays change with each generation. “The holidays” now start well before Thanksgiving. (Thank you, Hobby Lobby, for Christmas trees in August.) Unfortunately for our bank accounts, people tend to think more emotionally than financially. Now if you are going to implement a “no gifting” plan, you’ll need to create a strategy. Tell people as early as possible, especially those with whom you exchange gifts. If “no gifts” is too extreme, maybe find a common ground by setting a price limit. Or you can always do homemade gifts. Better yet, focus on the memory aspect rather than gifts. Go out with a group of friends for dinner or ice skating without a gift exchange. Volunteer at Harvesters with the family. Do something instead of give something. For those who may expect a gift but don’t give one in return—such as teachers, bus drivers, or bosses—just don’t give a gift. A nice note or card can be just as appreciated. Above all, if you tell others you are not giving gifts, keep your word. That’s the worst. It’s the holidays, so don’t be the worst.

PARENTING
BRING ON THE GENEROSITY
WHERE TO DONATE GENTLY USED CHILDREN’S TOYS AND CLOTHES WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER
I
t probably comes as no surprise that generosity isn’t limited to the human race. In a white paper published last year by scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, a study of capuchin monkeys (like Marcel from Friends) found that they, too, have a bias toward generosity. When given the choice to be selfish (exchange a token for a personal food reward) or “prosocial” (exchange a different token resulting in equal food rewards for the monkey and a partner monkey), they usually chose prosocial. This suggested that the monkeys found added value in the generous option—most likely the pleasure derived from seeing another monkey get food. In support of that theory, when they couldn’t see the other monkey enjoy the food, they more often chose to be selfish. In Johnson County and other areas of Greater Kansas City, those in need might not be easily visible to us. And we might not get to enjoy seeing our generosity being received. Regardless, the need is there.
For example, the number of people experiencing homelessness in the United States in 2018 increased for the second consecutive year. Kansas City was included in a USA Today article published this October that stated KCMO has a homeless population of 1,798.
Generosity in action Donating gently used children’s toys, games, clothing, and sporting equipment can be a great way to engage your kids in the spirit of the season. The same UC Berkeley paper states that “parenting plays a role in cultivating generosity. Some studies have found that various parenting practices—particularly role-modeling and discussing generosity—may help children grow up to be more generous adults.” Although many children’s centers, health facilities, and general philanthropy stores abound, be sure to check with the location before making a donation. For example, Children’s Mercy is in need of new toys, but cannot accept used toys due to health regulations.

Operation Breakthrough 3039 Troost Ave., KCMO
Started over 48 years ago by Sister Corita Bussanmas and Sister Berta Sailer, Operation Breakthrough began by helping five kids. That number has since grown to over 650 children. Gently used toys and games are accepted year-round, not just during the holidays. “We believe that every child deserves their very own new toy on their birthday and at Christmas,” says Lee Duckett, director of marketing and events. “But we always need used toys. We put them out for families to take home, and they’re very popular.”

SLEEK PHYSIQUE
WHAT SHE REALLY WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
We all dream of receiving something we really want for Christmas—something that lasts well beyond the holidays. One gift that does just that is a more youthful version of ourselves. When we improve the way we look, we improve our self-confidence as well. The gift of Endermologie brings the self-assurance to wear shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits without feeling out of place. Endermologie can even bring back the confidence to leave home without wearing a drop of makeup. Cindy Baumann, owner of Sleek Physique in Leawood, Kansas, has been in her clients’ shoes. Baumann is a former competitive swimmer, but she began to feel uncomfortable in her bathing suit as her cellulite became more obvious. One night in 1998 she saw an evening news segment on Endermologie, the world’s first FDAcleared, non-invasive technology to tackle cellulite. Not long after, she found a practitioner in Westport and began treatments. Through these treatments she was able to regain her confidence.
before she moved to Arizona, and I was looking for another Endermologie place but never found anyone. Then she popped up again!” Baumann explains that Endermologie is 100 percent natural. “It optimizes normal bodily functions such as blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, lipolysis, and collagen and elastin production, all of which join forces to smooth and firm the skin and slim the fat pockets.”
“It is non-invasive, painless, and feels so relaxing that most clients drift off to sleep during their treatments,” says Baumann. Treatments are either full-body or full neck and face, with a focus on problem spots. Baumann offers packages of 12 treatments and 20 treatments as well as two premium packages and a discount membership club.
After six years of being an Endermologie client, Baumann received LPG training and certification and opened her own practice in 2005. She served Leawood and the surrounding areas for nearly six years before marrying and moving to Arizona in 2010. Baumann recently returned to her former office with new, advanced Endermologie technology and take-home microcurrent devices. “I’ve been a client of hers for about 10 years now and I drive to see her from Topeka,” says Patty Akrouche, who was excited to see Baumann return to Leawood. “I was a client

“Clients report sleeping better, eliminating better, feeling less stiff, and even faster healing of bruises—liposuction bruises in particular,” says Baumann. The FDA has cleared Endermologie for the relief of delayed onset muscle soreness, minor muscle aches and pains, and muscle spasms. If that isn’t enough, Endermologie also improves athletic performance, endurance during workouts, and recovery process.
Endermologie has benefits that go beyond physical beauty as well.
Sleek Physique also offers several exciting take-home devices. NuFace Trinity PRO is an FDA-cleared microcurrent spa device. “Used for just a few minutes a day five days a week, clients report seeing smoother wrinkles and toned-up skin on the face and neck within 60 days,” says Baumann. a separate eye and lip attachment for extra focus in these areas, and a wrinkle reducer attachment for extra help with stubborn wrinkles. At 400 microamps, NuFace Trinity PRO is more powerful than the NuFace devices available at retail outlets. The NuFace Trinity PRO is only available at high-end spas and doctors’ offices. NuBody is also available at Sleek Physique. “This device delivers 900 microamps of current to smooth and tone skin on the legs, tummy, arms, and derriere. Five minutes per zone, five days per week, and within 60 days clients observe less dimpling and more toning
in the treated areas,” explains Baumann. Fix is also available at Sleek Physique. “This is just what it sounds like: a quick fix,” says Baumann. “At 200 microamps of current, Fix instantly feathers out
fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and lips for a six to eight hour hold.” This device can be used up to twice a day. Some clients even report seeing a cumulative, lasting hold after ongoing daily use. With more than 14 years of specialized practice and four Endermologie credentials, Baumann has single-handedly administered more than 14,000 treatments. Endermologie is her passion, and with her uninterrupted experience and an exceptional success rate, she is the perfect woman for the job. Baumann is now scheduling seven days a week.

INDULGE IN MORE
THAN SUGAR COOKIES THIS SEASON WITH OUR HOLIDAY SKINCARE TIPS WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER
T
he holiday season means indulging in family time, cheesy Christmas movies, and loads of baked goods. Take some much-needed time for yourself as well and luxuriate in these skincare tips from The Facial Bar’s Cecilia Smith for a dewy holiday glow. Now that it is officially December, it’s appropriate to give in to all things sparkly, merry, and obnoxiously cheery—especially skincare! The holidays are about celebrating. Whether it is time with loved ones, new gifts, or an indulgent meal, the likelihood of excess is overwhelmingly exciting. Skincare, though, is all about balance. And where there is excess, there must be detox. We chatted with Cecilia Smith, founder and CEO of The Facial Bar, to learn more about achieving a holiday glow all season long, no matter how much cheer you’ve taken part in.
Perfect your skincare routine Smith recommends you start with a

solid skincare regimen, which will help you stay on track throughout the holiday season when schedules get busy. Complete a run-through of your skincare products and group them based on function. Once you have cleansers, moisturizers, serums, and other items organized, it’ll be easier to tell which products you actually use and which are just taking up space.
Indulge in a maximalist skincare routine When you wake up to the smell of peppermint mochas, Smith says you should perform the following steps to keep your skin glowing throughout the holidays. 1. Cleanse. 2. Apply a toner. 3. Use a nourishing serum. “This would be something without an active acid in it,” says Smith. “For example, antioxidant serums, vitamins like E or C, or a peptide serum—if you are dry this can also be a facial oil step.”
4. Apply moisturizer.
one another before permeating your skin.
5. Always finish it off with SPF!
The biggest skincare don’t
Once you’ve sloughed off that ugly Christmas sweater in the evening, follow these steps. 1. Double cleanse with a cleanser, cleansing oil, or micellar water. The first cleanse removes the day and/ or makeup and the second cleanses the skin. 2. Apply a toner. 3. Use a corrective serum. “This would be something with an active acid or exfoliating ingredient in it,” explains Smith. These include products like vitamin A serums, lightening pigmentation serums, spot treatments, ingredients with salicylic for oil control, and AHAs. 4. Apply moisturizer (or if you are dry, layer with a facial oil). Keep in mind that you want to apply serums and moisturizers in order of weight from lightest to heaviest. This will help ensure the products are able to penetrate
“Don’t cake on thick, cold creams thinking they will solve your dry skin,” says Smith. “The best way to keep the moisture content of your skin up is to exfoliate regularly. We recommend one to two times a week.”
After a night of holiday cocktails When it comes to late-night sugar cookie martinis and moscow mules, the best way to ensure your glow doesn’t go dull is by introducing techniques like ice therapy. Try popping a jade roller into your freezer for a few minutes or picking up a cooling mask to wear while you snuggle in your layers of blankets. As if you need an excuse to put a mini fridge in your bathroom! Like I said, the holidays are all about indulgences. Another way to battle puffiness is by massaging the skin to help increase the
blood flow and stimulate the lymphatic system. “Using moderate pressure with both hands, lay your fingers flat on the skin toward the center of the face and keep even pressure as you guide your fingers outward to the edge of your face,” explains Smith. “Repeat this technique in three larger movements across the forehead, cheeks, then lower jawline, and repeat several times.”
Give the gift of skincare, but treat yourself too Now that you have the holiday recipe for glowing, hydrated skin, the best way to spread Christmas cheer isn’t singing (at least this time) … it’s giving the gift of skincare! Cleanser is the perfect gift, whether it’s a stocking stuffer, a white elephant gift, or wrapped under the tree. Once the holidays come to a close, make sure to keep your glow going by practicing these tips year-round. Smith says her number one not-so-secret tip for glowing skin is monthly facials.

PAINT NAIL BAR OFFERS
A HEALTHY, FAMILY-FRIENDLY NAIL EXPERIENCE WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
Britten Moyers didn’t set out to own a nail salon in Overland Park. She became a believer when she visited her first fume-free nail salon in Florida, where her family was living at the time. “When my husband was transferred to Kansas City, I knew I had to bring the experience with me. I wanted something safer for me, my daughter, and Kansas Citians,” Moyers says. Everything in PAINT Nail Bar was designed with two ideas in mind: safety and a desire to make guests feel like family. “Everything from our furniture—which includes chairs custom-made for us by Ethan Allen—to our décor to the odorless environment is designed to that end,” she explains. “We want every client to feel that PAINT is where they belong.” Moyers says the health and integrity of clients’ natural nails is job number one. “People come in to relax and enjoy the experience, while feeling confident in the safety and cleanliness of the products and tools used,” she explains. Customer Courtney Geiger agrees. “This is hands down the best, most professional nail salon I’ve ever been to! They treat you with kindness and thoughtfulness, not like you’re just another number. I was drawn to PAINT Nail Bar because they care about offering nail products that aren’t chock full of chemicals, and they are serious about hygiene.”

All tools are cleaned with soap and water, dried, sealed into a sterilization envelope, and sterilized in a hospital-grade autoclave. Autoclaving is the highest level of sterilization, and is standard procedure at medical facilities in the U.S. Also, due to consumer concerns with UV light exposure, the salon uses LED lamps for their clients.
I was drawn to PAINT Nail Bar because they care about offering nail products that aren’t chock full of chemicals, and they are serious about hygiene.
It all starts with the team Moyers says it is important for clients to feel like family, and that begins with her team. When you walk into PAINT Nail Bar, you can tell the staff enjoy working with each other and spending time with each and every client. Moyers is a former Marine, and she says her service helps her with the discipline necessary to run a business and look at things differently than some owners might. “In the Marines, you take care of your brother or sister—their safety and welfare. And I take that mentality to our organization. Our nail technicians are hired not just for their experience but for their passion and caring. We want all of our employees to be phenomenal,” she says.
The salon uses ceramic pedicure basins that can be thoroughly cleaned between customers and are guaranteed not to harbor bacteria like whirlpool jets, which are havens for bacteria. Clients can even choose a waterless pedicure if they wish.
The ultimate passion Moyers has is to take care of her clients, but that also means taking care of her nail technicians. “It goes full circle,” she explains. “We receive compliments about our team and their connectedness all the time. I like to hear that our team enjoys working here.”
Additionally, anything that can’t be run through the autoclave is a one-time use, such as file buffers. The client is welcome to take those items home.
Moyers says that she is most proud of the team atmosphere at PAINT. Stephanie, the manager, is so amazing she often gets mistaken for being the owner. “I am grateful to

have found Stephanie. Also, our lead nail technician and educator, Noelle, is an amazing artist who helps the ladies reach their potential. She brings so much knowledge and skill to her role. In addition to Stephanie and Noelle, Nikky fills a multitude of roles and
does an amazing job solidifying the team. These three amazing women, along with the rest of our wonderful staff, make PAINT an amazing place.” Moyers’ husband is a former Marine as well. He now pilots for the Nation-
al Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and flies scientists through hurricanes. The couple has three children, Dylan (15), Blake (12), and Paige (10), and the family loves Kansas City and hopes to make it their forever home.
PAINT Nail Bar also has great holiday gift ideas. Stop in today.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...
A MISSED CONNECTION
AND THE LONG-LOST BEANS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI
December has its cold, icy grip over Kansas City, and cold weather calls for chili. Step one is to find beans for the chili, so I recently went to Target. I walked up and down the rice/beans aisle looking for northern white beans. I thought maybe I’d missed them, so I kept circling. I went back up and down the aisle four more times. Each time I passed by a man with a giant beard. No, it wasn’t a white beard. He was more of a slimmer 30-something version of Santa. We kept passing each other, bending down to read labels and moving back for the other to see. “You’re looking for beans, aren’t you?” I asked him. “Yes! For chili,” he responded. “Me too!” I exclaimed. He looked at the shelf, dreaming
about finding a can of beans. “Man, how good does chili sound with this bitter cold?”
the bearded man still stood.
“Right? That is the only reason I came here—to get stuff for chili.” I glanced at my cart piled with other food, clothes, toiletries, and more. “Don’t look at my cart, though. You know Target. You can’t just buy one thing.”
The bearded man looked up at me from his phone. “I’m on my Cart Wheel app. It says they have beans in stock.”
The bearded man looked up at the ceiling and yelled, “You have everything we could ever need, Target, but not beans!” “It doesn’t make sense,” I added. “The aisle is labeled rice/beans. There’s not even an empty shelf space for beans. Surely they’re not sold out.” We walked away from each other. I wandered down the next aisle, dejected about not finding beans when my mouth dropped. I found the beans! I ran back to the previous aisle where
“Dude, I found them!” I exclaimed.
“They do! They’re in the next aisle.” “I was starting to panic. You can’t have chili without beans,” he said with relief. We grabbed our beans and walked away. I never saw the bearded man again. I hope his chili turned out as good as mine. It’s a good night for chili. The cold, icy grip is over Kansas City and not everyone has a giant beard to keep them warm. If the bearded man reads this, please let me know it’s you. And get it together, Target. Put your beans in the bean aisle!

GOOD TASTES
OOH, LA LA! SHORTBREAD COOKIES RECIPE BY GINA REARDON PHOTO BY MEL MCDOWELL
Ooh La La Shortbread Cookies MAKES 3 DOZEN
Ingredients 3/4 pound lightly salted butter (3 sticks), not quite room temperature 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup raw green pistachios, very coarsely chopped 2/3 cup dried cranberries 1 egg white beaten until frothy with 1 teaspoon of water coarse sugar for coating
Directions
Cream the butter and sugar together in a large bowl or stand mixer using the paddle attachment. Add the salt and vanilla and combine. Add the flour one cup at a time, followed by the pistachios and cranberries after the first cup or two of flour. Gradually add the remaining flour and mix until combined and the mixture has formed a stiff dough. Divide the dough in half and shape the first half of the dough into a cylinder on parchment or waxed paper, rolling the dough with the palms of your hands to form a roll about 2 inches wide. Roll up in parchment, place on the baking sheet, repeat with the second half of the dough, and chill for a few hours.
A few years ago I discovered a bakery at the Pike Street Market in downtown Seattle. Their pastries and cookies caught my eye. One cookie’s handwritten sign looked like this: “Oohlala.” It certainly lived up to its elegant name. The decadent shortbread cookie was studded with pistachios and dried cranberries. I recreated that cookie at home, and it was an immediate hit with my family: “Mom, this is the best cookie you’ve ever made. Why did it take so long to make them?”

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. When you’re ready to bake the cookies, whisk an egg white with 1 teaspoon of water until slightly frothy. Using a pastry brush, evenly brush each roll of dough with the egg white mixture and roll in the coarse sugar. Slice the cookies into rounds about 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch thick. Place the dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake them for 12 to 15 minutes until the cookies are set and firm to the touch, but not brown.
