FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE Between my four homeschooled kiddos, the busy, small farm we live on, and running both a design and a retail business, I’m not left with many spare moments. To be honest, though, my favorite spot to eat is at home with my family. On the rare occasion we do paint the town, though, our choice is The Russell on Main.
FAVORITE DRINK I love my vino. I’m no aficionado, but I love learning about wine pairings. I joined a wine club that helps me learn the ins and outs of what to drink with anything from fresh caught salmon to roasted brussel sprouts.
FAVORITE SHOPPING My first love is interior design, which means I’m always looking for unique new accessories and furniture. One place I enjoy is Blessings Abound, a resale shop in Overland Park. It sells gently used items and donates all the proceeds to help people, feed the hungry, and fund outreach programs.
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS The longer we live in the KC area, the more in love we fall with the people who have spent their lives doing what they love. One of my family’s favorite places is Foxfire Farm in Louisburg, Kansas. Owners Carl and Sharon are the kindest, most hard-working people we’ve ever met.
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS My backyard during a sunset. Kansas sunsets are beautiful, and the 108-year-old farm we bought has the most spectacular views. The fact that I get to wake up every day and experience the beauty of creation makes me feel like the luckiest person alive.

HOW BEING GRATEFUL CAN ACTUALLY IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
It’s February, and hearts are turning up everywhere. Not only do we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month, we also recognize National Heart Health. Everywhere you look you’ll find information on getting and keeping a healthy heart. You’ll see it almost as regularly as those not-so-subtle reminders for Valentine’s Day. Of all the tools we have for maintaining heart health, one that may not come to mind immediately (or at all) is something that each of us has access to every day. It doesn’t cost any money, and it doesn’t take much

time, yet the benefits are enormous. This almost miraculous tool is what some refer to as an “attitude of gratitude.” Hey, wait a minute. Didn’t we celebrate Thanksgiving a few months back? Yes. Yes we did. But it turns out being grateful all year long not only contributes to a healthier heart, but to other aspects of your health as well. Here are just a few of them. Gratitude benefits the heart. Studies show that appreciation and positive emotions have been linked with changes in heart rate, which may be beneficial in the treatment of hypertension and in reducing the likelihood of sudden death in patients with congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. Gratitude has been linked with a better immune system. WebMD reports that gratefulness is linked with
optimism, which in turn is linked with better immune health. Gratitude improves physical health. According to a study published in the medical journal Personality and Individual Differences, grateful people report fewer aches and pains and say they feel healthier than others who do not practice gratitude. People who are grateful are also more likely to take care of their health, exercise more often, and maintain regular checkups with their doctors, which may contribute to longevity. Gratitude improves psychological health. Robert A. Emmons, PhD, is a leading gratitude researcher who has conducted multiple studies on the link between gratitude and wellbeing. His research confirms that gratitude reduces toxic emotions ranging from envy and resentment to
frustration and regret, which increases happiness and reduces depression. Apparently, the more grateful a person is, the less depressed she is. Grateful people sleep better. In the holiday classic White Christmas, Bob Wallace shares the following words of wisdom with Betty Haynes after discovering she’s having difficulty sleeping one night:
“When I’m worried and I can’t sleep I count my blessings instead of sheep And I fall asleep Counting my blessings. “ I f you’re worried and you can’t sleep Just count your blessings instead of sheep And you’ll fall asleep Counting your blessings.” Emmons agrees. “If you want to sleep more soundly, count blessings, not sheep.” Dr. Emmons advises in his book Thanks! How Practicing Gratitude Can Make You Happier that taking just 15 minutes to write down what
you’re thankful for before you drift off to sleep may help you sleep better and longer. But just how does one develop an attitude of gratitude? What if you’re not the grateful sort? Does being grateful mean living in a state of constant denial, ignoring all that appears wrong in your world? Of course it doesn’t. Kansas City-based Olufemi Sharp, a licensed professional counselor and mindfulness teacher, acknowledges that having an attitude of gratitude is not as simple as it may sound and requires open-hearted awareness. She explains that being thankful and appreciative is a means of shifting attention in the moment to cultivate more happiness and well-being. As a therapist in private practice, Sharp says she sometimes encounters clients who are treatment-resistant to practicing gratitude or mindfulness as a daily life skill to overcoming major stress and depression, and their progress
is minimal. On the other hand, those clients who are tired of struggling with depression or anxiety are motivated to practice mindfulness and gratitude consistently, often undergoing a transformative healing experience. Sharp points out that mindfulness and gratitude are learned life skills. Practicing mindfulness and cultivating that attitude of gratitude, she says, can produce benefits such as alertness, self-confidence, increased positive emotions, happiness, and peace of mind. Sharp suggests the following ways to help you practice daily gratitude: Be present in the moment, identify and write down three positive experiences observed during the day, write gratitude letters, and make gratitude poster boards for home. “Overall,” she says, “mindfulness practice initiates an attitude of gratitude, giving one’s self a sense that all is well today and tomorrow.”

Medicine is such a dynamic field of study, it is nearly impossible to keep up with the constant scientific breakthroughs and groundbreaking inventions. Sometimes, though, medical advances involve stepping back and taking a look at products that have been available for millennia. One of these products that medical professionals have recently rediscovered is cannabinoids. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of many cannabinoid molecules produced by cannabis. This plant-based product does not have THC, which is the psychoactive component of cannabis (the component that produces a high) and is able to be used for a wide variety of medical purposes. Despite the fact that these products have incredible health benefits, there remains a stigma among the general population because of their relation to the marijuana drug. Phoenix Natural Wellness in Overland Park and Lenexa is working to remove this stigma by educating the community and providing products that have direct and powerful impacts on people’s health. Brian and Susan Pitts, Owners of Phoenix Natural Wellness, experienced firsthand the lifechanging effects of CBD when their son began having seizures in the summer of 2017. Epilepsy is a difficult condition to find a long-term solution for, as each person reacts so differently to each drug, and the effectiveness of the drug tends to fluctuate over time. Their son’s seizures continued after trying a few different medications, so they decided to try CBD oil. Brian’s father, who is a physician, researched the product extensively and concluded there is scientific evidence for CBD’s benefits. After beginning CBD oil, their son’s seizures stopped. Not only was the product able to help their son, it also
sparked a change in their autistic daughter, who became noticeably more alert and happier. Brian began using CBD to eliminate his aches and pains as well. “We knew we had to make CBD more mainstream, so we decided to open our first store in Overland Park with a heavy emphasis on education and providing high quality products,” says Susan.

These stores are impacting the community by providing options that weren’t available until now. One of the persons who was impacted is franchisee/ owner of the Lenexa store, Angela Doyal. Before Doyal opened her own store, she was a customer of Phoenix Natural Wellness. “Friends had recommended CBD to help with my anxiety and depression,” explains Doyal, who had suffered two strokes within eight
months. “I was skeptical at first. I wasn’t sure I wanted to associate with anything related to marijuana. But I, like so many, was misinformed about what CBD actually is and is not.” Doyal’s doctor told her it was safe to try CBD, so she decided to test it out. Within a few weeks, she noticed her anxiety was reduced. As a result, she and her husband decided to become the first franchisees of the Phoenix brand. “We couldn’t have picked two nicer people to help us get started in this business. Brian and Susan are exceptional people!” adds Doyal. Brian and Susan have seen many different conditions helped through CBD products. In addition to epilepsy, depression, anxiety, and pain relief, CBD can also be helpful for autoimmune diseases. “Autoimmune diseases make up a huge collection of diseases, so for CBD to have an impact on the inflammation and pain associated with them makes it a natural, effective source for a great deal of people,” explains Susan. Because of this growing list of conditions that CBD can help, doctors are beginning to catch on to the benefits and send their patients to Phoenix Natural Wellness. “While our products do not require a doctor’s approval, we do have doctors who send patients to our stores,” says Susan. “This is huge for us for two reasons: doctors trust us enough to send their patients to us and the medical community is finally embracing CBD as a legitimate source for relief from a multitude of disorders.”

Heart disease is the number one killer of women and takes a life every minute, but many women don’t consider heart disease an immediate threat to their health.

ccording to the American Heart Association, one in three women suffers from heart disease, but only one in five believes she is personally at risk. To change that perception, the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement educates women about the signs and symptoms of heart disease. The goal is to save lives and empower women to take charge of their heart health. In Kansas City, the Go Red for Women luncheon, with presenting medical sponsor AdventHealth
Heart & Vascular Services. Prevention starts with staying active and eating a nutritious diet. It sounds like a simple task, but that is not always the case. “Many women multitask roles of mother, wife, housekeeper, and professional, and tend to care for others’ needs before their own,” says Franck. “In this busy world, it is difficult to eat healthy and make time for physical activity, especially with processed food all around us.” To help inspire healthy food choices, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission is partnering with local Kansas City restaurants to offer special dishes that incorporate healthy foods such as salmon, citrus, and tomatoes. For each heart-healthy dish enjoyed by consumers in February, the participating restaurants will donate 10 percent to the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Heart & Vascular Center to fund programs supporting the education and prevention of cardiovascular disease.

difference in our overall health. The AHA recommends trying these tips to make your heart a priority. 1. Eat heart healthy meals. Whether you’re shopping or eating out, opt for whole, nutritious ingredients rather than processed foods. Focus on getting most of your calories from whole grains, skinless chicken and fish, nuts and legumes, and fruits and vegetables. 2. Get regular exercise. The AHA recommends 40 minutes of exercise three to four times a week. In order to make it a habit, find activities you enjoy. Whether it’s hiking, swimming, dancing, or yoga, you can strengthen your heart while having fun.
3. Reduce stress. In our busy lives, we all need to make time to relax. Take at least 15 minutes each day to sit quietly and breathe deeply. Try to be mindful of the present moment. Focus your thoughts on the sight of the falling snow, the sound of kids laughing, or the smell of cookies baking. KACIE BROACHING THE TOPIC OF BAD BREATH Sometimes my significant other has terrible breath and I can’t stand to face him or kiss him. What’s the best way to broach the subject without embarrassing him or hurting his feelings?
Hollywood lies! In every “good-morning-talk-in-bed” movie scene, no one complains about their partner’s bad breath. Couples spew words from their mouths, firing their dragon breath inches from their lover’s noses. But in real life, we’re all victims of morning breath. When the bad breath can’t be brushed away, though, there could be an underlying health problem. It’s worth saying something for their own health. This must be done tactfully, because you still want bystanders to like your spouse. If your spouse has terrible breath, you’re the one who should tell him or her. Most people can’t smell their own breath, so your spouse probably doesn’t know. If you’re smelling it, that means coworkers, grocery store clerks, friends, and the neighbor’s dogs are smelling it too. “You have bad breath” is as tough to say as it is to hear. Begin the conversation cautiously. Tell your spouse you think there’s something they would want to know and you’re not sure they’re aware of the issue. Then you can suggest making an appointment with a dentist or doctor. And some advice from the great and almighty Google: The best way to smell your own breath is not by cupping your hands in front of your nose. You should lick the back of your hand, let it dry, and smell the surface. Put that in a Hollywood movie.

What do you think sets Jasper’s apart from similar restaurants? We have M.I.T.H., “Mirabile In The House.” There’s always a Mirabile in the restaurant from the time we open until we close. There’s always one of us checking on tables, greeting the customers, and in the kitchen. Our respect for the authenticity of Italian cuisine also sets us apart. I keep up my father’s tradition of offering some of the finest Italian cuisine in Kansas City. We’re always updating our menus and bringing back dishes from our trips to Italy. We offer an experience you can’t find anywhere else through details such as tableside mozzarella, which is available April through October. What was your favorite meal growing up, and who cooked it? It was Sunday dinner with my nana. She made everything from homemade meatballs and Italian sausage to brachiole (pronounced /bra’zhul/ in the Sicilian dialect). She always finished the meal with the best desserts, including her famous rum cake. I’ve duplicated every recipe she’s made, but I still can’t figure out that rum cake recipe.

How do you start your day, in terms of breakfast? I’m always on the go, so I start off with two or three espressos. I also have a bad habit of eating sweet rolls, danishes, or
cinnamon rolls. Whenever I visit Italy they start off with prosciutto ham and beautiful croissants. I get used to eating that, so when I come back to the U.S. I’m a little spoiled. Do you have a go-to cocktail? I love a classic, old-school sidecar. When my father hired employees he’d judge them based on whether they knew how to make a proper sidecar. If a bartender didn’t know what a sidecar was, he didn’t get the job. It’s a combination of cognac, a little orange liqueur, sugar, and lemon juice, and you rim the glass with sugar. Do you have a guilty pleasure food? I’m here at the restaurant 70-80 hours per week, so people think I eat veal and pasta every day. But it’s nice to get away once in a while and have Doritos and the famous cream cheese dip my nana used to make. Do you have any tips for the home cook? I always say in my cooking classes “mise en place,” which means everything in place. If you’ve done all your shopping and have everything in one area, you can cook a dish in 10-12 minutes just like you would as a line cook. What is your favorite thing about Kansas City? I love all the local food artisans—everyone from our local chocolatiers to our coffee roasters. I have so much respect for our local dairies, and especially for our farmers—people like Sky and Liz Kurlbaum who grow some of the finest heirloom tomatoes in the country. I work closely with David Ball and Hen House Market. Their “buy fresh, buy local program” is really something. We both have a lot of respect for promoting and offering some of the best local food you can get.

Dancers are unique athletes who combine strength, flexibility, precision, and grace to create captivating performances. The best of them turn physically grueling feats into floating on air. With hours of vigorous training required every day—and the steadfast dedication necessary to do so—Katie Cornwell still noticed something interesting when she danced after taking her first few Pilates classes. “I was dancing stronger, better than I’d ever done in my life,” she says. “I was hooked [on Pilates].” This was the same experience of Noelle Dowma, who was rehabilitated using Pilates-based physical therapy. Dowma and Cornwell, who met in college at the University of Oklahoma dance program, were led to discover their life’s work: helping people become their strongest and healthiest. This is regardless of whether the person is a professional dancer wanting to reach her peak performance level or a weekend warrior wanting to return to golfing

and hiking after living with back pain. Cornwell became a certified Pilates instructor and joined Dowma at Kinesphere Physical Therapy Training and Pilates in Overland Park’s Corporate Woods office park. Along with physical therapists trained in orthopaedics, neurological rehabilitation, sports medicine, dance medicine, craniosacral therapy, dry needling, and hypermobility disorders, Cornwell gets to help people with their physical goals every day. What’s particularly unique about Kinesphere is that all the physical therapists and Pilates instructors are trained through Polestar Pilates—a Pilates school that focuses on biomechanical and teaching skills. Where many Pilates schools fit the student to the exercise, Polestar fits the exercise to the student.
Kinesphere serves the Pilates and therapy community by offering ongoing Pilates education courses. “I can’t tell you how many people come to us saying they tried Pilates and it didn’t work,” says Cornwell. “Some of them have even been injured from it. But what they experienced wasn’t the right fit for their body.” Last summer, the team moved to a new space in order to more than double its size, accommodate a growing clientele, and increase therapy equipment. “It’s important we work with people one on one to be able to address their unique situations,” says Dowma. “That’s the fastest way to get lasting results.” With their BFAs, both Cornwell and
Dowma teach at local dance schools. Additionally, Cornwell has her MBA and Dowma has her doctorate degree in physical therapy. The Kinesphere physical therapy team all have doctorate degrees and pursue their passion for the profession through extensive continuing education. Kinesphere Physical Therapy regularly utilizes Pilates equipment for safe, effective treatment. If patients choose to do so, they can bridge into Kinesphere Pilates wellness classes with instructors educated on how to manage their issues while continuing to achieve their goals. One of the most satisfying aspects of Kinesphere’s Pilates approach is that it’s limitless. Patients and clients range in age from nine to 90. They work with people in wheelchairs, professional dancers and athletes, and everyone in between. “All of them benefit from the equipment and the exercises,” says Dowma.
“It’s just a matter of fitting it to the person. Everybody can benefit from these exercises, in any condition.”

She was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disease that affects joints and organs. It causes joints to become loose and unable to hold bones in place.
“Noelle helped me learn correct body posture and helped me strengthen my muscles around my joints to better hold them in place,” says Cogan. “Next, I started Pilates classes with Katie. She was extremely patient and supportive as I navigated through proprioception and balance challenges associated with EDS. I went from continuous injuries to almost none over the last two years.” Pilates not only strengthens the body, it also creates balance and restores the body to its proper function. Faulty movement patterns can lead to wear and tear that Kinesphere therapists and teachers can address. “The best thing is seeing someone who has moved in a detrimental way their whole life make a correction and start living pain-free, and return to doing the things they love,” Cornwell says. “It’s something we can actually see in their body and in the way they move. They see it too—and feel it!”

WHAT YOU AND YOUR KIDS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VAPING
The use of e-cigarettes (also called vaping) has become a serious concern for many parents of teenagers. U.S. health officials from the FDA recently said the use of vaping products among teens has reached epidemic levels. In 2018, 21 percent of high school students used e-cigarettes. This is an incredible jump from a few years earlier in 2011 when only 1.5 percent of high school students used e-cigarettes. But many parents and teens are still in the dark about these products. Is vaping really a big deal? Isn’t it better for you than cigarettes? Let’s look at the real facts about this growing trend among America’s youth.
FACTS ABOUT VAPING • Yes, vaping is less harmful than traditional cigarettes, but it is still harmful. E-cigarettes use a heating element to heat a nicotine-
infused liquid that often includes flavorings and other chemicals. Users inhale the aerosol produced into their lungs. The nicotine is highly addictive and can cause spikes in blood pressure and adrenaline during withdrawal. Nicotine is also harmful to brain development, which continues even into the mid-20s. • I n addition to the nicotine, e-cigarettes also contain many chemicals that have potentially harmful effects. These include cancer-causing chemicals, heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead, flavoring such as diacetyl (which is a chemical linked to serious lung disease), and ultrafine particles that are inhaled deep into the lungs. • E -cigarettes are just as addictive as traditional cigarettes. E-cigarettes contain a large amount of nicotine, the highly addictive substance in cigarettes. Unlike cigarettes, though, e-cigarettes are not
well regulated. This means they sometimes have higher concentrations of nicotine than traditional cigarettes • M any teens are unaware of what’s contained in e-cigarettes. According the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 66 percent of teens surveyed said e-cigarettes contained only flavoring. As e-cigarettes are discussed more and more in popular culture, teens are becoming aware of the harmful effects, but still many are oblivious to the fact that these products contain nicotine. • V aping is causing a new generation to be addicted to nicotine. Smoking cigarettes has been on the decline for decades, but vaping has been shown to be a path toward starting traditional cigarettes. With the wave of teens taking up vaping, a whole new generation is becoming addicted to nicotine. continued on page 38

HOW TO TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT VAPING • Facts don’t go far. Facts can be very convincing in many arguments, but the reality is they often don’t change behavior. This doesn’t mean the facts shouldn’t be presented, but don’t depend on the facts alone to convince your teenager to not vape. • B e curious without judgment. Seeing your teen’s perspective may at times seem impossible, but trying to understand their behavior without judging it is essential to influencing their behavior. Ask their view on e-cigarettes without criticizing their response. Ask if they know other kids who are vap-
ing without telling them they need to stay away from them. • A sk why. Try to understand why your teen is vaping before telling them why they shouldn’t vape. If you understand their reasons for doing it, you will be better able to talk to them about your concerns. And if you only introduce the negatives without acknowledging the positives, you will be dismissed as out of touch. • E xpress your concerns. Voice your concerns in an objective manner. Be honest about the fact that much is still unknown about vaping, but what is known indicates that it is unhealthy. You could explain that it is well known
that nicotine is highly addictive and has an impact on the developing teenage brain, but regarding many of the other ingredients, the long-term effects are still unknown. • Admit your power is limited, but that actions have consequences. A heavy-handed approach will likely cause your teen to fight against and thwart your authority. At the same time, teens should be aware that actions produce consequences, and vaping is not a harmless teen pastime. A balanced approach that admits your limits but still establishes logical guidelines for your teen will work best for both of you.

TAKE BACK YOUR MORNING WITH THESE MORNING MAKEUP ROUTINES Some people don’t have time for makeup, such as working moms, stay-at-home moms, moms of babies, moms of teenagers, and moms of 40-year-olds. The keyword is mom. Jami Roth is a freelance makeup artist in Kansas City, and it’s her job to make your face look good. It is impossible for her to be at your bedside when you wake every morning, so we pulled her aside and got the next best thing—her words of advice on how to quickly make your face look refreshed and ready for the day.

Start with a fresh face: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer
Add your choice of a base: tinted moisturizer, BB cream, or CC cream
Wash your face with a cleanser, or wipe your face with a cleansing cloth. Use a toner to balance the pH and remove any excess dirt, oil, or makeup. If you have time, incorporate a serum. In any skincare line, serums are the most concentrated product. They are designed to rebuild the collagen and elastin you lose. Use an eye cream to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. Follow up with a moisturizer with SPF.
When you’re short on time, you can throw on some tinted moisturizer after your serum. It will provide the least amount of coverage. A better option would be a BB or CC cream because a lot of them have built-in primers to save a step. BB or CC creams are designed to correct and conceal. The differences between BB and CC creams are subtle. CC stands for “color correcting” and the products are meant to address
issues such as redness. BB creams are a lighter foundation with skin care benefits thrown in. Follow up with a concealer if needed.
Add color There are several tricks to save time when it comes to eye makeup. You can use any eyeshadow color as an eyeliner color. Wet your eyeliner brush with water, dip it in the color, and it will glide on. Use your blush or bronzer color in your eye crease. It acts as a great blending color when you’re not sure which color to use. It will look great and also create the slight contrast you’re looking for when in a rush. Make sure you highlight under the brow with either
a lighter color eyeshadow or your concealer. You can also line your inner bottom lash line with a white or neutral eyeliner pencil to brighten and open up the eye. Heavy face contouring is not necessary. You can accomplish minimal contouring and dimension by placing your bronzer or blush color on the temples, down the nose, and chin. Aim for brighter, neutral colors such as whites, tans, golds, and light pinks.
If you don’t have time for color: fill in your brows and add mascara The two most important things you should do before heading out the door is fill in your eyebrows with an
eyebrow pencil or gel and pop on some mascara. They are the game changers of makeup.

Now that Christmas and New Year’s are behind us, that means Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. This holiday presents its own set of challenges—maybe trying to spark a romance, keep a romance burning, or rekindle a romance. My informal poll to determine the ideal dessert for a romantic occasion said it should be chocolate, although crème brulee also received an honorable mention. Most of the time I fall in the chocolate camp—even a single artisan chocolate truffle can not only set the mood, but elevate it. I also favor romantic dinners at home with candles, soft music, and time to enjoy the evening. This chocolate-hazelnut mousse is rich and satisfying, and best of all it is light and versatile—perfect for a special dinner at home. So if you’re looking for a dessert to set the mood, this is for you.
Gianduja Mousse Serves 4
Ingredients 1/2 cup Nutella 1/4 cup crème fraiche 1-1/2 tsp. Frangelica 1/2 cup heavy cream, whipped
Directions Blend together Nutella, crème fraiche, and Frangelica until smooth. In a clean mixing bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form. Fold into chocolate mixture until no white streaks remain. Spoon into serving dishes and chill until firm. Top with whipped cream and hazelnut praline if desired. May also be used as a filling for tarts, cake, or cookies.

MY HUSBAND QUIT THE PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION The Pinterest mom. She has the best school party games and the best school party crafts. No peanut butter allowed? No problem. She knows exploding slime will be better than a small package of M&Ms. The teachers adore her, the polite moms roll their eyes behind her back, but her friends say it out loud in front of her: “Julie is the parent equivalent of teacher’s class pet.” I didn’t mean to become the Pinterest mom, it just happened. I signed up to bring a craft to Kate’s Valentine’s Day class party.

I decided to bring no-sew felt heart pillows. The kids would tie knots in the heart-shaped felt and stuff them with filling. One heart took me two hours. So I decided to ask my husband Scott for help. Me: Will you help me with these felt hearts? Just cut little snips around the edge and knot them like this. Scott: Where are the box cutters? These scissors are dull. Scott opened the Hobby Lobby bag and pulled out the receipt. Fifty dollars! Does the school pay you back? Me: No. The craft person is financially responsible for the craft. I volunteered and now I need help. It took Scott ten minutes to finish two ties. We continued knotting for an hour. You’ll get to the middle, like this, and leave the rest for the kids to finish. I held up the half-finished heart. Scott: You want the kids to knot half a heart? Me: Yeah, but we only have six minutes at the stations.
Scott: It took me an hour to do half a heart! Me: I can’t return the felt. I cut all 60 hearts. I pointed at the pile. Scott: Are you kidding? No wonder the other moms say you’re the teacher’s pet! I ended up drawing a tree with bare limbs on a canvas. The kids inked their fingerprints to fill in the tree’s leaves. I wrote the teacher’s name on the bottom in calligraphy. I purchased the canvas and ink at an undisclosed price. The class finished the craft, and Scott quit the Parent Teacher Association.
