WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
STAYING SANE ON VACATIONS WITH HELP FROM FAMILY Did you know June is the most popular month for vacations? It’s no surprise, really. June (and her close cousin July) are the months when most kids are out of school and free to see the world. Or, in our case, see the Great Plains from the back of a car on the way to grandma’s house.
strategy to take our vacations back. We found a way to do something fun, once or twice a year, and actually breathe and enjoy ourselves and our kids. Want to know our secret?
Over the years, my husband and I have learned a lot about these so-called “vacations.” With three young children, long flights to beautiful beaches are rarely relaxing. But we’ve tried. Long car trips to see world-famous monuments or national parks are rarely as interesting as they were when we planned them from our couch with the kids playing quietly nearby. But we’ve tried. And long days at the most Magical Place on Earth are rarely … well, magical, when you have three kids who are sweaty, hate standing in line and need a nap. But guess what, we’ve tried. And the one thing all these vacations have in common?
That’s right, we almost always bring at least one relative with us. Usually it’s a grandma, but sometimes we get bonus family in the form of grandpa, aunts, uncles, and even nieces and nephews who serve as our kids’ entertainment. We’re totally upfront about our strategy. “We need HELP,” we tell them. An extra set of hands. An extra set of eyes. An extra dose of sanity. And (because they’re awesome), they always come. And they make amazing memories with our kids.
We’re exhausted when we get home. And while there are always fun moments, carting three kids around the country is hardly what I’d call a vacation. So about three years ago, we got serious about a

Grandma.
I smiled when I read this month’s Aging Well column on page 28 about multigenerational vacations. It’s spot on. We can’t really expect grandma to hang with us all day at Disney World. It’s too busy, too hot, too spread out — too everything. But if you choose your locations wisely, bringing three (or four) generations on a trip is so rewarding.
Our favorite destination is a little beachy island off the coast of South Carolina called Seabrook. We can get a place right on the beach so the kids and grandma can go in and out as they please. It’s not crowded. It’s very near Charleston, which we can do once or twice during the week when everyone’s feeling up to it. It’s a perfect fit for our family. Whether you’re heading out for vacation this month or not, check out these great tips on multigenerational vacations. Maybe grandma’s game for your next one? Happy June!

MODERN KC, STARRING ERIC STONESTREET He’s one of the funniest actors in the business and a two-time Emmy award-winner for his role of Cam on ABC’s “Modern Family.” He also calls Kansas City home.
SKC: Which KC barbeque place do you miss the most?
Here, Eric Stonestreet talks Big Slick, Children’s Mercy, and how much he loves his hometown barbeque.
SKC: What is the craziest thing a fan has done?
SIMPLYkc: All of Kansas City wants to know — do you miss us when you’re in LA?
Eric Stonestreet: Of course I miss the people! When I come home to Kansas City, it feels like a big hug.

| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
ES: Wyandot Barbeque in Kansas City, Kansas — that’s usually what I have to have first. It’s out by the racetrack. I also love Gates. The Gates burnt-end sandwich is something I have dreams about. I wake up and realize I’m in a meat sweat because I’ve been dreaming about the Gates sandwich.
ES: I’ve had girls cry like I’m Justin Bieber or something. When someone starts bawling hysterically, I’m like, “Oh God, what has happened to you? Do you need help? Should I call 911? I don’t know what to do.”
SKC: Do you ever get nervous when you’re on the stage at award shows?
ES: You can’t prepare for that moment. But you learn early on that nerves are a fuel for an actor. When I won my first Emmy, I was very nervous. I kind of blacked out and didn’t remember my speech afterwards. If you watched me when I won, I pulled a piece of paper out of my tuxedo jacket that I had written some notes down on but when I gave the speech, I never looked at it. I remember running into John Lithgow backstage and he told me, “Great speech.” And I said, “Really? I don’t remember it. I’ll have to trust you.”
SKC: But are you nervous when you sit next to Ellen? We’ve seen her prank you multiple times by suddenly scaring you.
ES: Ellen thinks she’s very funny. SKC: Who has better green room snacks — Ellen or Jimmy Kimmel?
ES: Well, they are two very different green rooms. Ellen is very health-conscious. All of her snacks are good for you. Jimmy Kimmel loves to eat and has a bar with tequila and full snacks. It’s kind of a party atmosphere since it’s late-night.
SKC: We all know you are a huge sports fan, and we love that you support the Kansas City teams and Kansas State. Do you ever get “star struck” by athletes?
ES: Well, I am a big admirer of Garry Shandling. Unfortunately, I never got to meet him before his death, so that’s a bummer.
SKC: Pick one for the 2016–2017 season: Chiefs win the Super Bowl, Royals win the World Series, or Bill Snyder brings K-State to a national title?
ES: I choose, at this moment in time, Bill Snyder to win the national championship just because he’s at the twilight of his career. With the Chiefs, Andy Reid and John Dorsey are still in a building process, so there’s going to be years for them to win. So I would choose Kansas State to win the National Championship.
SKC: You host Big Slick, a charity benefiting Children’s Mercy’s Cancer Center, with Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Rob Riggle, and David Koechner. Big Slick has exceeded its monetary expectations for Children’s Mercy every year. What are your emotions when you fly into KC for Big Slick?
ES: First and foremost, it’s great to come home to see my parents and family. I enjoy the opportunity to raise money for the hospital and be one-on-one with kids. I get brought into such a personal journey with some of these kids, kids who have been so close to not being with us anymore, to being in remission. It’s very meaningful just to know what we’re doing is such a worthy cause.
SKC: Did you ever go to Children’s Mercy with an injury or illness as a child?
ES: No, but I did go there as a clown, named Fizbo, to read to the kids when I was in ninth or 10th grade.
SKC: When you were a kid, did you have a celebrity you wanted to meet?
ES: Actors didn’t seem possible for me to ES: I don’t necessarily get nervous around other actors, but athletes and musicians — I get star struck, yeah.
SKC: Is there anyone you want to meet that
meet as a child. It was probably more local sports legends I wanted to meet the most — Willie Wilson, George Brett. I haven’t met Willie Wilson yet, but I have met and know George Brett, which is a great full-circle moment. I was also a big Chiefs fan, so I always looked up to the Chiefs players. I wanted to know the whole offensive line.
SKC: There will be many kids laughing this summer at your new movie, “The Secret Life of Pets” (out July 2016). You voice Duke, a mutt. How did your real-life dog, Coleman, have an influence on your performance?
ES: Coleman has been with me for 15 years. I always enjoying looking at the world the way he sees it. He’s been my dog for so many years; he’s no doubt made me a better person because he’s a great guy. I hope I represent his species well.
SKC: Do you feel like you’re talking like Coleman when you’re voicing Duke?
ES: No, it’s a different dog, different sound. Coleman has a different attitude than Duke. Duke has a little bit more of a New York-y personality going on.
SKC: Is voice work harder than acting in front of a camera?
ES: It’s a focused energy. It’s not as relaxed as people think, but it certainly is nice to go into a quiet booth and not have anyone looking at you. It’s not hard, but it definitely requires what it probably took for me to be an actor in the beginning — an imagination. You read the script, imagine the character saying it, and then put that performance into it without seeing the character. As a performer, you need to build the world around you in your head. The crazier you are in your head, the better voice actor you will be.
SKC: Is there anything else you would like to say to our readers?
SKC: Paul, Jason, David, Rob, and I appreciate coming back to a great hometown. We’re thankful a lot of people come out to Kauffman Stadium to watch our Big Slick softball game every year. And we love it when people buy our merchandise on the website! There’s just no better way to support Children’s Mercy than by giving a little money. That’s what they need. Children’s Mercy is so special and Kansas City is lucky to have such a great place. Big Slick is June 17–18, 2016. For ticket info and to learn how you can help, visit bigslickkc.org.

ROMANELLI OPTIX: HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU BY DEBORAH EAKIN OSBORNE Photos / Carmen Carver
A dozen or so years ago, Felix Milman and Roman Beznovsky, two veterans of the eyewear industry with 25 years of combined optical experience between them, had a vision of providing the most exclusive collections of European luxury eyewear available under one roof. That vision became Romanelli Optix. In 2004, they opened the first location near the Brookside/Waldo communities of Kansas City, Missouri. Two years later, a second location opened in Leawood, followed in 2012 by a third location in Overland Park. A fourth location, also in Leawood, opened in 2014. Each of the four boutiques’ interiors shares Romanelli Optix’s signature kaleidoscope palette of fresh colors matched with clean lines. This contemporary yet structured combination of variety and precision transforms shopping for eyewear into an energizing experience for the customer. In addition to their shared traits, each location also reflects the community it serves with its own unique feel, style, and look as well as inventory. “But what truly sets Romanelli Optix apart from other local optical shops is the vast inventory,” Beznovsky says. “Not only the number of the most exclusive collections of European luxury eyewear available at any optical shop in the Kansas City area, but the number of pieces in each collection — many of which are available only at Romanelli Optix.” Optician Caroline Goldstein has been in the optical business since 2012 and joined the Leawood location at 135th and Roe about a year ago. She believes that, in addition to the vast collections and oneof-a-kind pieces, it’s the personal service that is so unique about Romanelli Optix. Customers are carefully guided through
16
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
the selection of eyewear tailored to their lifestyle by certified opticians who want every customer interaction to be above and beyond anything the customer has ever experienced. Beznovsky explains that all work is done in-house to the exact specifications of the prescription. Measurements are taken using state-of-the-art equipment and the latest and greatest optical products and lens technologies available. Focusing on only 10 to 15 pieces of eyewear a day ensures that each piece gets the attention and time it deserves. Opticians triple-inspect each pair every time, and no piece of luxury eyewear is ever in the hands of anyone other than the Romanelli Optix staff and the customer. This process ensures fast turnaround times. After-sales service is just as important to Beznovsky as the initial service. He wants to be sure that every piece of eyewear is properly adjusted, and nose pads and screws are replaced as needed, so that every pair of eyeglasses continues to be as good as it was when originally purchased. Excluding total loss or probable damage, every frame that Romanelli Optix sells is covered by a full two-year warranty that is extended to the customer at no extra charge. “Minus you losing them or your dog chewing them,” Milman adds. Also, any changes made to a Romanelli Optix customer’s prescription within a 60-day period from the original purchase date will be corrected at no charge.
“ W hat truly sets Romanelli Optix apart from other local optical shops is the vast inventory — the most exclusive collections of European luxury eyewear. Many of the pieces are available only at Romanelli Optix.” — Roman Beznovsky In addition to Romanelli’s loyal local following, Goldstein says there are some customers who have moved away yet continue to come back to the shop — despite the existence of plenty of other optical shops in their new communities. Beznovsky adds that many clients “from both coasts, and everywhere in between” have discovered Romanelli Optix online. Still others who have visited friends or family in the area, or who have had friends or family from KC visit them, have become clients themselves despite not living in the region, simply because they liked the eyewear so much.

HOME & GARDEN
BY BETHANEY WALLACE
WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN Almost everyone has held onto a photo as a keepsake. No matter who or what is featured within a treasured image, or how old the picture might be, it serves as a frequent reminder of the past. A personalized heirloom that brought back memories you didn’t want to forget is a powerful way to hold onto your past. However, photos are extremely fragile. When not properly cared for, they can wear and tear, become faded, lost, or be destroyed completely. This dreaded thought — losing the only copy of a picture — is why more and more folks are backing up their photos and storing digital files. Digital versions take up less physical storage space and are easy to share. Bonus: The paper-to-digital process is pretty affordable!
Making the transition If you’re a hardcore DIYer, you can create your own digital photos with an at-home scanner. But if you don’t have gobs of free time to dedicate to this potentially massive project, you’re in luck! Plenty of companies out there now help consumers convert their old photos. Many are remote services, allowing you to mail
18
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
pictures at your convenience. Fotobridge.com will scan up to 250 pictures for $54.95, while scanmyphotos.com offers the same service for an entire box of photos for $145. With these services, you have a choice as to what type of files you receive, and you own all the rights to the scanned photos. From there, you can print the photos or simply share them over email or social media.
Shipping off a box of photos can be cumbersome, however. Perhaps you are wary of putting cherished family photos in the mail. Fortunately, local businesses such as FedEx and the UPS have photo-scanning capabilities. Or, head to Wolfe’s Photo Expressions, located in Topeka. The locally-owned store, which has been in business for nearly 100
3 TIPS FOR DIGITAL PHOTO STORAGE years, offers even more photo keepsake services, including photo restoration.
Saving digital images is a great way to keep track of personal photos and ensures you can easily pass keepsakes onto future generations.
Meredith Royston, creative director at Wolfe’s, says it’s pretty common for customers to bring in old photos. “People will be finishing up their parents’ estate or doing some spring cleaning and they find a photo that they really want to preserve for the future,” she explains. Besides converting photos into a digital format, Wolfe’s can turn photos into calendars, blankets, canvas prints, and more.
1. Get organized. Unfortunately, most of us hold onto pictures in old shoe boxes, or in an equally unorganized fashion. This not only makes it hard to store and keep track of what you have, but it’s hard to browse for pleasure. With digital files, however, you can easily put them into folders organized by topic or year, and more. (Get even more help using a photo organizing software, such as PhotoDirector 7 Ultra, Google Photos, Carousel, etc.)
It costs $34.99 to get up to 100 photos (sized 3x5.5, 4x6, and 5x7) scanned, and $69.99 (or 28 cents each) for 101 to 250 photos. One of the biggest perks to using Wolfe’s, aside from its unique services, is its focus on heirloom security, Royston says. While not everyone feels comfortable mailing copies of their only photos, Wolfe’s scans and process copies in a single location, within three to four business days following drop-off. “Photos never leave the store,” she shares. “There aren’t a lot of other place that give you those same options.”
2. Save files to multiple locations. If you use the cloud or host an external hard drive, be sure to save the images in more than one spot so your photos can’t be wiped out by a virus or by misplacing a device. 3. Print your favorites. Just because a photo is digital doesn’t mean it can’t be printed. Display the photos you love most, and enjoy peace of mind knowing you have a backup file.

Beyond Disney World: 4 Multigenerational Vacations
Vacationing with extended families is becoming more popular, but finding a trip to entertain everyone from 2 to 92 years old can present challenges. Disney World and cruises are always a good go-to but there are other cities to consider when planning your next family vacation. Here are four cities that will keep everyone in the family happy.
St. Louis, Missouri In a quick, four-hour drive, you will reach the infamous Gateway Arch. But St. Louis holds more than admiring (and even riding!) the arch. Tours of the Anheuser-Busch brewery are not limited to adults. Kids are allowed on tours of this beer giant. In fact, one of the top attractions is meeting the Clydesdales horses made famous in those Super Bowl commercials. Other must-sees include the St. Louis Zoo, which has free admission, and The City Museum, which can only be described as a giant playground for young and old alike. You also can always catch a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. Wearing blue and cheering for the visiting team is fine. After all, the Kansas City Royals play in Missouri, too.
Washington D.C. Our nation’s capitol is home to the White House, the Library of Congress, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Mon-

ument. The city is bursting with history — but don’t assume Washington D.C. is boring. The National Mall is an easy walk and it includes the Smithsonian National Museums. All the museums are free to enter. It’s hard to find a museum here that doesn’t perk someone’s interest. Try the National Air and Space Museum, National Zoo or The National Museum of Natural History, which displays the supposedly cursed Hope Diamond weighing 45 carats. This museum is not to be confused with The National Museum of American History that displays a small piece of Kansas — a pair of Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Of course, “there’s no place like home.”
Sanibel Island, Florida If you’re looking for beaches, Sanibel Island has plenty. To many kids’ (and adults’!) delight, you can find seashells and sand dollars all over the island, which is known for its breathtaking sunsets.
Sanibel Island is a quiet island 12 miles long and 3 miles at its widest point. Because Sanibel and neighboring island Captiva are relatively small and flat, many people bike around town. Sightseeing can include the Point Ybel Lighthouse, which is the most photographed structure of Sanibel. And Old Town Sanibel provides quaint shops, inns, and restaurants. The leisurely Sanibel Island might be the perfect escape “to do nothing” from landlocked Kansas City.
Flagstaff, Arizona Going west, Flagstaff, Arizona, is surrounded by mountains, deserts, and ponderosa pine forests. With such a vast difference in surroundings, activities are ruled by the outdoors. Sitting at an altitude of 7,000 feet, hiking and mountain biking in the mountains are popular activities for the more adventurous. And for the nonadventurous, Flagstaff is only 80 miles from the Grand Canyon — a sight no picture can do justice. Flagstaff is also home to the Meteor Crater that was created in a split second 50,000 years ago. Star-gazing at the Lowell Observatory is also a hit for all ages. One thing that Flagstaff, Arizona, can give everyone in the family is relief from the Kansas City heat. Average high temperatures peak in July at just 81 degrees.

Susan Truluck (at left) and Cherie Parker, owners of Heartland Healthy Heads, hope to be the local resource for head lice.
ON A MISSION TO #BELICEFREEINKC BY BRENNAN HALLOCK Photos / Carmen Carver (above) & Nicole Bissey (right)
Have you or your children ever experienced head lice? If you have, you know the frustrations, difficulties, and exasperations involved in trying to rid your family of these pests. They are known for being tenacious and irritating, and treating for head lice can be stressful. Heartland Healthy Heads is on a mission to educate people in the KC area about these insects, dispelling the many myths surrounding them and teaching people about how to properly treat them. When you hear about someone at your job or your kids’ school who has head lice, you often panic. You might believe certain myths about head lice, and attempt to treat it accordingly. But you really should speak with a professional before attempting any treatments. “We really want to promote safe and effective

treatment options,” explains Cherie Parker, CEO of Heartland Healthy Heads. “We want to be the local resource for head lice. We have school nurses who call us from all over the state just to ask questions about head lice because they don’t fully understand.” Heartland Healthy Heads founders and co-owners Cherie Parker and Susan Truluck have started #BeLiceFreeInKC, a campaign to raise awareness and end the stigma associated with head lice. This campaign offers school staff, parents, professionals, and anyone interested the opportunity to gain awareness, separate myth from reality, and have access to effective treatments for head lice. “#BeLiceFreeInKC helps raise awareness that everyone needs to come together and recognize safe and effective treatments for head lice,” Parker says. The campaign already has had an impact on the KC community. Many local school districts as well as other organizations such as the YMCA Headstart Program have had Parker and Truluck lead educational programs for them. “#BeLiceFreeInKC is kind of like a partnership,” Truluck says. This partnership includes free education for staff, access to resources about head lice, discounts for services provided by Heartland Healthy Heads, and recognition of
the organization on the Heartland Healthy Heads website, on social media, and at Heartland Healthy Heads events. “A lot of people think head lice jump or fly,” Parker says, “but 90 percent of head lice are passed by head-to-head contact. It is anatomically impossible for a head louse to jump or fly. They don’t have wings or hind legs.”
Learn more about Heartland Healthy Heads at heartlandhealthyheads. com, or call the 24-hour lice line at 913.730.NITS (6487). The South location is at 801 N. Mur-Len, Suite 105, in Olathe. The North location is at 6 Victory Drive in Liberty.
“ A nyone who has hair on their head can get head lice. If people are properly educated, that will help reduce the stigma. If we raise awareness and people talk about it, then people can get checked and treated quicker.” — Cherie Parker She says people often also believe that head lice will infest an affected person’s house. “That never really happens,” Parker explains. “The bugs cannot live off your head. They have to feed every three to four hours.” For safe and effective treatments, Heartland Healthy Heads offers in-clinic treatment options as well as education about at-home treatments. The in-clinic treatments offered are the Airalle® Treatment and the Shepherd Method. “The AirAllé® Treatment is the use of an FDA-approved device that uses controlled heated air to dehydrate all the eggs and the lice. It has been proven 99.2 percent effective, so it is probably the most effective treatment out there,” she says. The Shepherd Method is an alternative that involves strand-by-strand removal of the lice from the head. All of the offered treatments are backed by a 30-day guarantee, so you don’t have to stress about the lice returning. The second step in Heartland Healthy Heads’ campaign to educate the community is the recent opening of its new location in Liberty, Missouri. “We’re expanding to cover more of the North Kansas City area,” Parker notes. The original location is in Southern Kansas City. This increased coverage will allow more people access to education and treatments, furthering Heartland Healthy Heads’ mission to educate people and raise awareness about head lice. Through their #BeLiceFreeInKC initiative and the opening of a second branch, Parker and Truluck have taken it upon themselves to make Heartland Healthy Heads the primary resource for education about head lice in the Kansas City area. Parker sums it up by saying, “Anyone who has hair on their head can get head lice. We feel like if people are properly educated, that will help reduce the stigma. If we raise awareness and people talk about it, then people can get checked and treated quicker.”
The AirAllé ® treatment, which is 99.2 percent effective, uses controlled heated air to dehydrate all the eggs and lice.

5 Trade Secrets From a Professional Makeup Artist I love getting my makeup done. It is a luxury expense, but I always feel like a million bucks when it is done. Makeup artists play up your best features and conceal the flaws. I recently worked with Megan Archuleta, a beauty expert at the new boutique Blue Mercury on the Country Club Plaza. She filled me in on tips of the trade that can help you achieve that professional look by using just a handful of products.
1. TIGHTLINE AND EYESHADOW SMUDGE STICKS Achieving the perfect smoky eye can be challenging and, at times, seem more like a harsh black eye. Archuleta suggests
32
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
using jewel-tone eyeshadow smudge sticks with a tightline cake liner (Laura Mercier Tightline Cake EyeLiner, $25) for a perfect red-carpet smoky eye. Start by applying a smudge stick on the lid and transfer resistant cake liner to the top lid above and below the lash line (the water line). This helps to define and give a subtle yet dramatic definition. Then apply a jewel-tone eyeshadow smudge stick over the liner and into the crease. Use a smudge brush to blend out any harsh lines. Blend a medium natural tone in the crease and finish off with your favorite mascara.
2. MODERN-DAY SETTING Setting powders are thing of the past! A modern look will have a healthy, dewy glow, so why mute it with a powder? Whether you are oily or dry, Archuleta suggests using a setting spray before, during, and after your makeup. Her favorite product is the Caudalie Elixer ($18). It’s an innovative toning mist that will set makeup, give you an instant burst of radiance and hydration, and tighten the appearance of pores.
3. THE POWER OF PRIMING Prepping your skin is key when trying to achieve any makeup look. No matter your skin type, all makeup needs moisture so it
can properly bind to your skin. This makes it look like a second skin rather than looking like you have makeup caked on. Start off with a nice, clean, bare canvas. Apply a hydrating serum rather than your go-to moisturizer. Serums penetrate deeper into the skin and are more concentrated, delivering better hydration all day. (Darphin Hydraskin Serum, $76) Next, put a hydrating primer all over your face. (Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer, $36) Follow with your favorite foundations, bronzers, and blush. If you desire a matte look, finish with a mattifying powder. If you desire a more radiant look, apply a subtle highlighting powder. (Bobbi Brown nude finish illuminating powder, $50)
4. TRIANGLE OF LIGHT Archuleta’s favorite product of all time is the Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift ($38.50). This product is a breakthrough under-eye treatment that brightens darkness as it reduces the look of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and puffiness for the appearance of a dramatically lifted eye. It is long-wear and oil-free. Use it under, on top of makeup, or simply by itself for a crease-less lift.
5. BROWS, BROWS, BROWS The hottest trend in beauty right now is eyebrows, Archuleta says. From powders to pencils to gels, finding the perfect product just depends on what works best for you.
good shape. When you go for a wax, thread, or pluck, the the most important thing is to make sure to not take too much hair off. If you like the shape they are already, ask your beautician to only “clean up” your brows. A shaping every time can lead to your brows becoming too thin. Let hair grow out for six to eight weeks before you go in for another shaping. Use tweezers to pluck away any strays. When you are filling in, the small stragglers can help add volume to your brow. Big bushy brows are in. Archuleta encourages her clients to embrace their brows. They’re the frame to the eye and can make any face look fabulous!
Always remember they are supposed to be “sisters” and not “twins.” It all starts with a

AROUND TOWN

SUMMER LOVIN’ … WITHOUT THE TAN June brings weekend festivals, daylong trips to theme parks, trips to the pool, and just general fun in the sun. But with summer also comes increased chances of getting sunburned — which increases your risk for developing melanoma. “You can still enjoy going to the pool and being outdoors, though,” says 16-year-old model Sydney Stricker. “You just always need to remember to wear the right amount of sunscreen.” Stricker is active within a local organization, Fair & Fashionable (F&F), that is campaigning for everyone to embrace the skin

they’re in. F&F uses fashion shows that feature models of all skin types wearing their naturally colored skin without a suntan. The organization also partners with middle and high schools to educate about the dangers of ultraviolet light exposure using real-life skin cancer survivors. Finally, its high school-based Ambassador Program provides leadership opportunities, community-service hours, and other incentives to three teens per school.
A movement begins In 2013, husband-and-wife team Dr. Brian Matthys and Dr. Molly Menser, both dermatologists at Sunflower Dermatology & Medical Day Spa, in Riverside, Missouri, noted an increase in the number of young women developing skin cancer. This cancer was most often caused by ultraviolet exposure — whether through tanning

beds or outdoor suntanning. Melanoma is now the most common cancer in women ages 25 to 29. “This all prompted me to say, why is it that we, as a society, feel like we have to be suntanned?” Menser says. “Why can’t we reframe the mind to help women feel better in their natural skin color?”
New customers mention this ad and receive 20% OFF one item!
Girls most often start tanning in preparation of an event, such as prom or spring break, Menser says. This pattern easily becomes a habit — or even an addiction, as some studies have shown. That’s why F&F targets their education to middle- and high-school girls. The best way to prevent melanoma is by creating healthy habits early in life.

Taking the pledge
Walking the runway at F&F shows makes Stricker feel strong, she says, and empowers her to spread the word around school and on social media. She encourages everyone to take the F&F Tan-Free Pledge — at fairandfashionable.org/band — to maintain a tanfree lifestyle. Stricker signed the pledge in honor of her aunt, who fortunately found the cancer on her foot early enough and has fully recovered. Since F&F launched three years ago, nearly 500 people have pledged to be tan-free.

“A lot of girls at my school are already addicted to the tanning beds and tanning all summer,” Stricker explains. “If it weren’t for Fair & Fashionable, I wouldn’t think about wearing sunscreen as much, either, and I would still be putting myself at risk during the summer by tanning at the pool.”

“I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything in life just because I don’t go to the tanning beds or lay out in the sun all day,” Stricker shares. “I also don’t think having tan skin makes me more attractive. Natural skin is the key to beauty.”
Your summer skin care cheat sheet Dr. Molly Menser has provided a short guide to protecting your skin over the summer. PARENTING

HOW PERFORMING ARTS CAN BENEFIT KIDS
Many parents enroll their kids in sports early in order to reap the benefits of playing, which may include mental, physical, and academic benefits. But did you know that kids who participate in performing arts reap similar benefits? Children are naturally creative and enjoy all kinds of artistic expression. Enrolling them in performing arts groups, such as theater, dance, and music, can benefit them in many ways — academically, mentally, physically, and socially. Research has shown that there is great value in arts education, and that kids can use the skills they gain from the arts throughout their lives. Dance and fitness instructor Annie Paglusch says getting involved in performing arts as a child changed her entire life. She was a shy child who avoided being the center of attention. But
38

after Paglusch enrolled in a local musical theater camp called Camp Center Stage (now known as StageworX) one summer, she learned how to conquer her fears. Since then, she has performed and choreographed for many local theaters, and now spends her time helping kids learn to sing, act, and dance. She is also a fifth-grade teacher. During her time as a director at the Miller Marley School of Dance and the stage director at StageworX, Paglusch has seen many examples of kids changing for the better. “It’s amazing how playing a role can grant insight on ideas or concepts that you would have never thought about,” she says. “Not only can children learn self-discovery and have a creative outlet, but they also learn a lot about the importance of discipline and hard work as they begin making and following through with commitments, overcoming obstacles, and learning how to manage time between rehearsals, training, and school work.” Out of the many benefits of arts education and exposure, academic benefits may be one of the strongest. The “three R’s” — reading, writing, and arithmetic — are all skills that are improved by participation in the arts. For example, dance has been used to develop early literacy in young kids, while study-

ing music has helped children learn language skills. The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) commissioned a study in 2006 entitled “Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement.” Students who take music classes in school, researchers found, are more likely to score higher on standardized mathematics tests such as the S.A.T. This could be because musical training helps develop spatial temporal reasoning, which may lead to higher-level thinking about math concepts. The study also found that involvement in theater helps improve children’s reading comprehension and writing skills. Involvement in performing arts groups also can provide kids with a number of mental health and social benefits. Per the NASAA study, the arts can lead to improved cognitive skills such as reasoning ability, intuition, problem-solving skills, creativity, inventiveness, imagination, and perception. In addition, certain arts activities promote growth in social skills such as self-confidence, self-control, conflict resolution, collaboration, empathy, and social tolerance. The skills children gain from performing arts can benefit them later in life. Companies are increasingly looking for employees with creativity, higher-order thinking, and communication skills — all of which the arts can provide.

Participating in performing arts that involve physical activity — such as dance, music, or acting — also can help kids counteract obesity and develop positive body awareness, which results in decreased levels of depression and anxiety. Dance, an aerobic form of exercise, helps kids develop motor coordination, increases their flexibility and stamina, and improves their muscle tone and cardiovascular health.

It can be difficult to decide where to place your child. Paglusch says that sometimes children don’t know what they like until they try it. She recommends offering kids a variety of activities, such as theater and dance camps, then filtering their activities from there based on interest and talent. “Many kids like to use their elementary-school years to experiment with sports, gymnastics, dance, and performing to assist with the decision-making process,” she says.
Medical Professionals Concerned with the Health and Well Being of You and Your Children.
Children don’t have to be prodigies to benefit from the arts. Participation alone results in positive experiences. As Paglusch explains, “We are so fortunate to live in a city that offers so many opportunities for people of all ages to get involved! Between dance studios, theater classes, music instructors, and the amount of community theater opportunities, you don’t have to look too hard to find a way to get started.”

ON PINS AND NEEDLES Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. Flying arrows in ancient times of war brought on the discovery. When an arrow pierced certain parts of soldier’s body, wounding him, the soldier would be cured of chronic pain elsewhere. Magic? Not quite. In today’s world of modern medicine, acupuncture is sometimes sought out as a last hope. And Dr. Rebecca Lindesmith, owner of Balanced Body Holistic Health in Olathe, is more than happy to be the last option when it comes to living a well life. Dr. Lindesmith is a chiropractor with advanced acupuncture certification. She helps restore wellness in her patients through chiropractic care and acupuncture. Dr. Lindesmith studied under the founder of the Acupuncture Society of America, Dr. Richard Yinnie. She is also the on-site wellness practitioner for Mariner Wealth Advisors. In short, she is an expert on how this ancient “magic” works.
What exactly is acupuncture? Acupuncture helps balance a vital energy in your body, called Qi (pronounced chee). This Qi “energy” circulates through your body, from the top of your head to the soles of your feet through energy pathways called meridians. This allows the body to maintain sustained health and well-being. When you are in good health, Qi flows freely along the meridians in the body. Each merid-

ian is connected to a specific organ system. When Qi is disrupted by disease or injury, you experience illness and pain. Acupuncture helps balance the flow of Qi and triggers the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
What does it feel like? Patients begin by lying on a comfortable, padded table. Most patients do not need
to remove articles of clothing, although skin does need to be accessible to insert the needles. Warm blankets are provided and the room temperature may be turned up because acupuncture can bring the person’s body temperature down. Hair-thin needles are placed on the meridian points in the skin and turned slightly clock-
wise. The placement depends on which part of the body needs healing. Techniques can vary but, most of the time, in the U.S., needles are thin and placed into the skin with the help of tapping a guidance tube. The pressure from the tube takes away the prick of the needle. How deep the needle is placed depends on the treatment and area of the body. You might feel a stinging, burning, or even a dull ache, but that is usually gone in about 15 seconds. “It’s rare that there will be continuous throbbing,” Dr. Lindesmith explains. “And if there is, a different point might be used. It’s all about the mind-body connection. We don’t want anyone focused on pain. Most of the time, my patients don’t even know the needle is in.” And then your mind gets to work. Soothing music is played, lights are turned down, and you are allowed to deeply relax. Your appointment can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. When the needles are removed, there is minimal blood and no scabbing. You might notice a small bruise, but that is rare. Patients are often exhausted after a treatment. “When you’re working with energy, you’re working with the whole body,” she says. “The first few times might be exhausting, but the patient will become more relaxed with each treatment.”
Experience the calm. Midwest Myofascial Release Center empowers you to heal at your own pace and return to a pain-free, active lifestyle through individualized treatment provided by a supportive, healing team.

Who should get acupuncture? Acupuncture can help heal more than 2,000 conditions. The most common ailments are pain management, allergies, and headaches. Studies have shown that acupuncture boosts the body’s nervous and endocrine systems, and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Acupuncture is also good at bringing hormone balance to the body. Dr. Lindesmith has worked with young girls starting their menses as well as helping couples with fertility challenges. In fact, she has helped many couples conceive when they had nowhere else to turn.

“Energy is not palatable. It’s not something you can see. For some, it’s hard to imagine outside of that conventional thinking,” Dr. Lindesmith says. “But the patients who can get the mindset of, ‘I believe this will help me,’ generally respond faster.”

Acupuncture is not a faith or religion. It’s a healing practice. Whether you believe it’s magic or not, when you come in with right mindset, you’ll get better results. It’s a lot easier than coming in with an arrow.

6 Ways to Afford Your Next Out-of-Country Trip The responses are generally the same when I talk about trips I’ve taken or how much I enjoy traveling outside the U.S.: “That is really amazing! I could never afford that.” The truth is people usually can afford it, but don’t know how to plan for such a trip. It may seem overwhelming or out of reach, but if taking an out-of-country vacation is a priority for you, here are a few tips for making your dream a reality. Even if you don’t travel during an off-season, simply having flexible dates can save on your ticket. A change of just one day can sometimes save you hundreds of dollars. Use sites like flights.google.com that allow you to see prices for multiple dates at once. 3. Use travel rewards credit cards. Using credit cards that give you travel rewards can save you cash on airline tickets, hotels, rental cars, and other expenses. Capital One, Chase, Bank of America, and even specific airlines like Southwest and United all offer rewards cards. While they tend to grow slowly, if you have time to accrue these rewards, they come in handy when it comes time to buy your airline ticket, rent a car, or reserve a hotel room. 4. Budget for every day of your trip. Just like in your personal finances, if you do not tell every dollar where to go, you will not know where it went. Sitting down and creating a day-by-day budget of your entire trip will save you money and make your trip more feasible. Of course, you can expect unexpected expenses and changes of plans, but making sure you budget out each day’s basics, such as food, lodging, and transportation, will help offset these expenses. Want help creating travel budgets? Check out budgetyourtrip.com or download smartphone apps like Trail Wallet. Or, as I usually prefer, you can simply create a spreadsheet on Excel.
1. Set aside money in a separate account. Setting aside even a little bit each month into a separate account for that “someday” trip quickly adds up. With some self-control, less eating out, and fewer trips to the coffee shop, your trip fund will be up and running and you’ll be ready to take the next step. 2. Save on your airline ticket. Your flight is often more than half your total trip’s expenses. Traveling during the off-season is one effective way of lowering this cost — but this can clearly come with downsides. Weather may be bad or attractions may be closed. In many cases, however, the weather is just fine and attractions are open (with the added benefit of fewer tourists).

5. Trust the guidebooks. Travel guides, such as those offered by Lonely Planet or Rick Steves, are invaluable in both planning what to do on your trip and determining costs for your trip. These books will educate you about prices for things like food, taxis (or other local transportation), hotels (or hostels), local attractions, and more. 6. Be flexible. Staying in hostels instead of high-class hotels, taking public transportation instead of expensive tours, buying some food from the local grocery store or vendor instead of always eating at restaurants, and being willing to “rough it” here and there will save you money and make your trip more educational, experiential, and cultural.

GOOD TASTES
BY SAMANTHA LEVI
Photo / Samantha Levi
If you know me, then you know I love whiskey — and by whiskey, I mean KC Rieger whiskey. They’ve paid tribute to the old family recipe. What makes this blend unique is the added sherry. So, last summer while stirring up some quick peach jam to go on my waffles, I had this brilliant idea to add my favorite whiskey to the batch of peaches I was preparing. I don’t want to be biased (but I am) to other whiskeys and bourbons. So if you use another, just make sure it has similar flavor profiles to the peaches (or whatever fruit you are using). I chose Rieger because of its smooth, slightly sweet taste, which in turn complimented the tart peaches. I am not one for canning but I do appreciate a great jam. And who doesn’t love waffles?! This is a tried-andtrue brunch favorite at my house all year long.

Rieger Peach Jam and Pecan Waffles Recipe yields 12 ounces of jam and 10 to 12 small square waffles.
Jam Ingredients
Directions
Waffle Ingredients
Directions
2 t o 3 large peaches, pitted and chopped (fresh or frozen)
In a medium saucepan, add all ingredients and heat over high heat. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil. Once boiling, lower the heat to a simmer and stir occasionally. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until the mixture has thickened slightly. Remove the mixture from the heat and let it stand for 5 minutes until cool enough to handle. Transfer the jam to a small dish or jar to cool. Store the jam in sealed container in refrigerator for up to 1 week.
2 cups all-purpose flour
Preheat your waffle iron according to manufacturer’s instructions.
1/4 cup water 4 t ablespoons coconut sugar or brown sugar 1/4 cup Rieger Whiskey
Note: If you want a smoother consistency, put the mixture in a food processor or blender.
1 cups almond meal 1/2 cup sugar 1 t ablespoon baking powder (use double-acting baking powder for extra fluffy) 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped pecans 2 c ups milk (almond or coconut will work too) 3 tablespoons coconut oil 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
In a large bowl, combine the flour, almond meal, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and pecans. Set the bowl aside. In a small bowl or liquid measuring cup, whisk together the milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla until smooth. Gently fold the milk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until smooth. It is OK if the batter has a few lumps. Do not overmix. Pour batter onto the hot waffle iron and bake in batches. Serve the waffles immediately with Rieger Peach Jam. Note: Waffles are best enjoyed the same day. Extras may be refrigerated up to 3 days. Waffles may be frozen, up to 3 months, and then warmed in the toaster.
Farm-raised and city-approved, Samantha Levi grabs inventive and adventurous style when cooking up the goods. A little of this, a little of that. She believes it’s about the art, not the science. And she loves putting her own flair on any recipe that crosses her path.

Wedding Season Calls for Cute Dresses Spring and summer weddings are around the corner! Weddings aren’t as conservative and formal as they used to be. I have seen invitations that say “snappy casual,” “beachy chic,” or “summer garden party.” So, whether you are traveling to the beach, to the mountains, or to a local wedding, you will be able to find a dress to fit any occasion.

Lace is one of the biggest trends you will find in dresses and formalwear this year. It’s very feminine and it will give you a dressier feel than just a plain cocktail dress. Two-tone lace dress $74 by Everly from Scoobie (shopscoobie. com).
I love the jumpsuit as a dressed-down option for a wedding. If it is the type of occasion where you don’t need to be in a cocktail dress, this jumpsuit is a great option. I like it because you can mix up the accessories or your hair and makeup to completely change the look. $98 by Knot Sisters from Scoobie (shopscoobie.com).
A daytime wedding calls for something fun and light. Stripes look updated in this ankle-length dress with side cutouts. Pair this with a wedge sandal and add a colorful clutch to complete the look. $86 by Everly from Scoobie (shopscoobie. com).
Nothing says summer wedding like a floral print. This season, you will see both small and bold floral prints in casual cottons and dressier silk fabrics. Floral flutter dress with waist tie from Tulip (tulipfashions.com).
We also are seeing a lot of bold prints this season. When going bold, let the print make the statement and keep your accessories to a minimum. Multicolor print dress from Tulip (tulipfashions.com).
