PUBLISHER’S NOTE
The New June School is finished and June has arrived. I remember when my kids couldn’t wait until summer break. Scheduling summer camps and coordinating schedules was a challenging but exciting process. But this summer will be a new kind of summer for all of us. Typical summer activities won’t be quite like they used to be. It seems we are just waiting to see how each new phase of reopening adjusts our lives to another new routine. I’m sure we will all be looking for things to do this summer. Take a look at our column 7 Things on page 48. From creating your own drive-in theater to backyard camping to picnicking at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, there really are exciting things to do even in a culture adjusting to social distancing. I hope you all stay safe and healthy and enjoy the warmer weather!

MAY 2020
It is said that history repeats itself. The Rieger family thinks so. J. Rieger & Co. was the largest mail-order whiskey house in the United States prior to Prohibition in 1920. But the federal government shut down the distillery and J. Rieger & Co. closed its doors in December 1919.
P
rohibition doesn’t exist anymore, but the famous distillery was forced to close its doors again on March 16, 2020 due to COVID-19. The doors didn’t stay closed for long, though. It only took three days for J. Rieger & Co. to offer much-needed hand sanitizer to the public. The key ingredient in hand sanitizer is alcohol, and J. Rieger & Co. has a lot of it. The idea to make hand sanitizer came from a local nursing home. The nursing home reached out to J. Rieger & Co. because they saw a distillery in Seattle producing limited quantities of hand sanitizer and asked if the Kansas City distillery would do the same. Andy Rieger, co-founder and president of J. Rieger & Co., recognized his company had the ability to help, so they did. He laid out the business plan to create hand sanitizer on a mass scale, got in touch with suppliers, and went to work. “We’ve always been forward thinking and nimble, and we strive to be industry leaders,” explained Rieger. “We had been discussing the impact COVID-19 could have on our business for a few weeks at that point and knew we were either going to need to make some massive shifts in our business, or we’d be sitting ducks waiting to lay off our staff—something we were unwilling to do.”
J. Reiger & Co. has produced more than 60,000 gallons of hand sanitizer to date, which is over 250,000 individual bottles. Some of the bottles are sold and some are donated. The purchasing power of the public allowed them to not only keep the entire staff of 65 full-time employees, but also gave them the ability to donate bottles to those in need. The FDA is allowing distilleries to make hand sanitizer through the end of 2020, and J. Reiger & Co. plans to keep producing it as long as there is a need.
How does a distillery go from making spirits to making hand sanitizer? The main ingredients in hand sanitizer are alcohol, glycerin, and hydrogen peroxide. The alcohol was already on hand, but only at inventory levels. They didn’t have glycerin or hydrogen peroxide, though, not to mention the bottles, labels, caps, dispensers or boxes. Rieger explains, “We had to source all of those items. Most suppliers were being inundated with requests and were only willing to sell supplies in mass quantities. For example, to get bottles we had to purchase an entire semi-truck full—which is 22,000 bottles—at a time. We could see a market for this product and saw it as our best opportunity to be able to keep our entire staff employed while filling a massive community need.”
The health care industry, mainly area hospitals and first responders, had priority for the first bottles produced. Now that production has increased, hand sanitizer is available to anyone who needs it. Most orders are currently from local businesses reopening that cannot get basic PPE from normal suppliers. There are more than 40 retailers in Missouri and Kansas that have the product available for purchase in their stores. The locations are listed on J. Rieger & Co.’s website. The hand sanitizer can also be ordered directly from J. Reiger & Co. by the case for pickup from the distillery or for shipment. Along with hand sanitizer, J. Rieger & Co. offers to-go cocktails. They have donated 100 percent of the proceeds from the first week’s to-go cocktail sales to The Community Meals Project, which helps area restaurants keep their staff employed while producing meals for KC’s food-insecure. “At some point, it would be nice to just get back to booze,” Rieger says, “but we will do what is necessary to keep our team employed and our community safe.” Visit: JRiegerCo.com/RiegersRemedy to order hand sanitizer. TOP HEALTH CONCERNS FOR MEN AT EVERY AGE WRITTEN BY ADVENTHEALTH
It’s sometimes jokingly said the number one health risk for men is procrastination. But there’s a bit of truth in that statement. Many men don’t make their health a priority, and seeing a doctor when they’re well may not be top of mind, especially during a pandemic.
However, it’s still important to keep up with routine health checks despite the existence of COVID-19. Health care providers are taking every precaution to keep you safe if you do schedule an office visit during this time. June is Men’s Health Month and a perfect opportunity to encourage the men you know to take charge of their health with these highly recommended wellness tips for every stage of life.

20s “Men in their twenties don’t have many age-based health concerns, which makes this decade an easy time to phone it in when it comes to their health. However, this attitude of invincibility can lead to habits and behaviors likely to create serious health problems down the road. Here are a few to watch out for. Drinking: Some of the highest rates
of binge drinking are from university students in their twenties. Binge drinking, even as a young adult, can trigger heart disease later in life. It’s important that men in their twenties who choose to drink do so responsibly and stay away from binge drinking. Skipping physical exams: Many young men don’t go to the doctor until they experience problems. Skipping routine check-ups can mean small problems go untreated until
they become major and more difficult to treat. It’s important for men to check in with their primary care physician regularly to make sure everything’s in working order.
Cholesterol: Men over age 35 should have their cholesterol checked every five years. Cholesterol levels are closely related to risk of heart disease, and men over 45 are at the highest risk.
only way to know is to be screened. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, heart failure, or kidney failure.
Poor diet: Males in their twenties typically have a fairly high metabolism, making them appear physically fit even though they may have a poor diet. Eating fast food and pizza and not getting enough fruits and vegetables can lead to health issues in their thirties. It’s imperative to get a nutrient-rich diet rather than only think in terms of weight.
Stress: Career, finances, and family obligations present a lot of opportunities for men to feel stress in their lives. Men under stress are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, or even a heart attack. It’s important to protect your body and mind with regular exercise and coping skills to handle stressful situations.

It’s important to consult with a primary care physician to determine risk levels and necessary screenings. Colon Cancer: Starting at age 50, men should be screened for colon cancer, as it’s the second leading cause of death from cancer in American men and women. The Andersons are lifelong Kansas City natives, and both are seasoned business professionals who emphasize delivering quality results to customers and employees. Scott was VP of Global Services for a software firm. After retiring and taking a year off, he and Barb started thinking about phase two. Barb worked in customer experience and solution delivery for a large health care organization where she learned operational and organizational efficiency. Scott was a member and guest at Massage Heights in Leawood for five years, and he took his experience as a guest to be his foundation for a successful launch of his and Barb’s second career.
Scott maintains that what differentiates Massage Heights Lenexa from other businesses is a combination of things. “We are locally owned and very present and involved in the day-to-day business,” he explains. “We have core values that drive all our staff on a day-in day-out basis. We ask them to be loyal, authentic, passionate, and diligent.” Scott explains that these values create a unique and memorable experience for each and every guest and member who visits. “We have highly trained and dedicated staff members who truly enjoy and are passionate about taking care of each guest who walks through our doors,” says Scott. continued on page 22

Paige is a three-time American Idol semi-finalist, official showcase artist of Folk Alliance International, featured vocalist for the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and she’s the TEDxKC artist in 2020 and TEDxKCWOMEN artist in 2016. Her new album will be released this summer.
FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE So many places immediately jump to mind. I love to sit on the patio at Ça Va and enjoy some of their pom frites with a happy hour glass of champagne. Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room is a band favorite because we can roll in post-gig and snag a burger while listening to our friends play music. My favorite brunch places are Affåre and Voltaire. I’ve also been spoiled on the amazing food of venues I’ve played at like Eddie V’s Prime Seafood and Stock Hill.
FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room. There are
always musicians at the bar to hang out with. Christina and Michael Corvino have made a point to welcome musicians and let us know they value us as more than just noisy ambiance, which is reflected in the loyalty the community feels for their restaurant. Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Chez Charlie, and Lucky Boys are all great too for when I am feeling divey.
FAVORITE SHOPPING I lived in a loft in the West Bottoms for a couple of years and enjoyed walking around the antique and boutique stores there. Start in the morning with a coffee from Blip Roasters, end with a cocktail at The Ship. It’s a great way to spend Saturday. Fetch is a West Bottoms shop I love, and their Instagram posts always crack me up. I also love art from Jess Macy of ColorbloKC. I found her at The Strawberry Swing Indie Craft Fair last year and literally spent all of the money I had budgeted for the fair in her booth.
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS I recently moved to the Historic North East, around the Kansas City Museum neighborhood, and am blown away by how cool Kessler Park is. Having been unaware of it, I love that there is this place just down the street that is beautiful and full of diversity. And Banksia! I just recently discovered this Australian bakery/ restaurant and it is tops.
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS I would start with coffee at Oddly Correct Coffee Bar, get a snack at Banksia, hit the West Bottoms for some shop wandering, grab lunch at The Bite, then head to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for a couple hours. After we are feeling artsy and inspired, we’d go to Ça Va for champagne and frites, maybe lay in a park or wander The Country Club Plaza, then get BBQ for dinner and take in a show at a local venue like recordBar. Post-drinks would be at Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room, Tannin Wine Bar & Kitchen, Chez Charlie or Il Lazzarone Pizza.

HOME
BRING THE OUTDOORS INSIDE WITH A JUTE RUG WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER
One thing the coronavirus has put a focus on is home—the place where we seek comfort and rest, maybe where we have been teaching our children, where we might be working and working out. Regardless of how your home has been transformed over these last few months, it’s never been more important for it to be an inviting, comfortable space. One way to achieve this is by bringing elements from nature indoors, such as with a jute rug. Made from natural fibers, these woven rugs have long been a staple in interior design-

less beachy and more modern. There’s a perfect rug for any style.”
They’re also a favorite among self-proclaimed “rug nerds”: designers partial to using rugs as a design element due to their versatility and their ability to transform a room.
Natural design elements in a home have been proven to help us feel refreshed, calm, and connected—something most of us could use right now.
For jute rugs, that doesn’t have to mean only a tropical feel. “Jute rugs can tend to be thought of as ‘beachy,’ but as people want more options for these rugs in their home, the industry is really responding,” says Monica Freeborn, owner of Amethyst Home, a local studio offering interior design and curating services. “This year, they’re even
Ready to start shopping? Here are a few top tips from Freeborn for finding your perfect jute rug.
Texture/Make: How does it look and feel? A couple keywords Freeborn recommends keeping in mind when shopping for a jute rug are hand-woven and hand-knotted. “These rugs
are handmade by artisans around the world,” she explains. “They’re extremely durable with minimal shedding, versus tufted rugs.” Despite a misconception of being uncomfortable to walk on, jute is soft— not prickly—and many people even find the somewhat knotty texture to be massaging to the feet. If you’re concerned about texture, Freeborn recommends going with a thinner rug, which offers a finer braid.
Size: The right rug for the right space The size of your rug will depend on where you want to use it. Another misconception about jute is that it can serve as an indoor/outdoor rug, but Freeborn advises against using them outside: “They will grow mold and mildew,” she saya. Pretty much anywhere inside the house can be livened up with a jute rug, though: hallways, living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.
For the living room, consider a rug that will extend 6 inches past the length of the sofa: for example, a 9-foot rug for an 8-foot sofa. In the bedroom, Freeborn says an 8-by-10-foot rug works great for queen-sized beds, and a 9-by-12-foot for king-sized. When used under dining room tables, make sure the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. “Generally, buy bigger. This really helps ground the space and makes the space feel more elevated,” Freeborn says. If your rug is too small, try this designer trick from Freeborn: Layer it over a thin, bigger rug that more completely fills the space.
Color: Keeping it natural One of the most exciting updates to jute rugs recently is the wider variety of colors available. Known for their appealing honey color, jute rugs that are popular now come in everything from ivory to rich chestnut—retaining the
warmth the rugs are known for. “Chestnut is great if you want a richer look, which works particularly well with older homes,” Freeborn says. “Bleached, almost white rugs are also popular right now.” Patterns are also getting wide play, popular for their timelessness and their ability to kick up the personality in a room without having to commit to a trendy look. Long loved for their organic rusticity, jute rugs are making a comeback with more versatility than ever. If you’re looking for a little more help finding the perfect match for your space, many design consultants, including Freeborn, offer consultancy and even personal rug shopping services. Freeborn has over 100 rug samples that she brings with her on home consultations. “Sometimes you just have to see the sample in the room to know whether it’s the right rug,” she says.

AMEETS MODERN WORLD HOLISTIC MEDICINE WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
Modern medicine is amazing in many ways, but it’s not perfect. You often go through the same routine at the doctor. You seek treatment for a specific reason, you're examined, and you’re prescribed a drug. Maybe it helps, but it often comes with some side effects. Holistic medicine aims to take a step beyond this process and improve the bodily and emotional well-being of a person rather than just treat the symptoms of an illness. It addresses the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This doesn’t mean modern drugs, surgery, and technology aren’t important, but our bodies are much more complicated than the isolated pain taken away by a drug. Dr. Jesse Lopez, Jr., DO, is in the

unique position of combining the power of holistic and modern medicine at his Overland Park practice, AkasaCare. He is a board-certified surgeon through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery who specializes in the field of bariatrics. Dr. Lopez has practiced surgery and medicine for over 28 years with the philosophy that one must consider all aspects of an individual’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in order to facilitate healing.
“We are a forerunner in the blending of traditional and holistic health care in a way that allows multiple routes that help an individual with healing and wellness,” he explains. “Our expertise is tying it all together, then recommending traditional medicine or holistic techniques and supplements that help the body maintain its natural homeostasis.” Dr. Lopez’s patients may come in with pain or soreness, an inability
to sleep, or gaining too much weight even with exercise and appropriate eating. Dr. Lopez explains that the human body doesn’t work in separate parts; it’s connected. If you can’t lose weight, Dr. Lopez may ask questions about areas that at first don’t seem to directly relate to health and fitness. “We dive into extensive hormonal and metabolic testing,” he explains.
“You will not find a more balanced physician versed in all fields of health care.” By focusing on the whole body, Dr. Lopez can assess potential causes of inflammation. By offering traditional medicine he can offer the right treatment for healing the entire body. Treatments include bio-identical hormones, medical weight loss, metabolic medicine, Botox treatments, CBD therapy, IV therapy, colonoscopies, and endoscopy. His success with whole-body care has even reached out of the Kansas City area. Beth Johnson from Topeka, Kansas, says, “Dr. Lopez is sharing cutting edge technologies with his patients. He is a caring individual who will do all he can to help and serve others. I am so excited about the new treatments he is sharing with his community. His experience and knowledge serve him well.” In the ever-changing world of health care, Dr. Lopez is offering primary care medicine focused on the whole family. You can receive all your health care
needs in one place with two nurse practitioners on staff. Whether you have an ailment or are just looking for that extra push in your weight loss journey, AkasaCare provides the help you need. Kezia Shine, chiropractor at Align Whole Body Care, agrees. “Dr. Lopez is
top notch. You are never just a number in his office. I refer many of my patients to him and never am concerned about the care they will receive. You will not find a more balanced physician versed in all fields of health care.”

BEAUTY
BEST BROW FORWARD: PERFECTING THIS YEAR'S HOTTEST BEAUTY TREND
WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER
P
encil-thin? Over-plucked? Practically invisible? As we relaxed into our new normal throughout the stayat-home order, many of us forewent all things seemingly mandatory— pants, offices, and tweezers included. Lucky for us, bold and borderline bushy brows have been growing on beauty lovers for years! Sprucing up your brows à la ‘90s supermodel-chic is easier than ever thanks to makeup, serums, and microblading. Read on for your fullest, boldest arches yet!
Remember, practice makes perfect! When filling in your brows, start by drawing the outline of your brow shape. Next, starting from the center of your brows and working your way outward, fill it in with light, feathery strokes. To finish off the look, use an eyebrow brush (or an old, washed mascara brush lying around) to brush through your brows, pushing the hairs upward and outward. Bonus points for using a brow gel to set!
Makeup
Serums
Drawn-on brows are here to stay! But it’s not the harsh lines of Josephine Baker that are imprinted in your mind. Consider brow-enhancing makeup as a way to accentuate your natural brow shape.
If you’d rather spend time on your skincare routine than perfecting a drawn-on brow, meet eyebrow growth serums! Non-prescription brow serums can help enhance the thickness of the hairs you already have while stimulating growth in areas that are less fortunate.
Now that bold brows are back for good, all it takes is a short trip to your local drugstore to test out a few products—eyebrow pencils, pomades, tint-

Microblading
Increases exfoliation
For the most popular eyebrow trend this year, we spoke with Roslyn Koenig, Phibrows Certified Artist, 5X Beauty Angels Certified Artist, certified in A+ and Phi removal, blood-borne pathogens, and Barbicide. “Mircroblading is a semi-permanent makeup technique where we place ink into the skin using a microblade,” Koenig explains. “A microblade is made up of microneedles—really thin esthetic-grade needles—that make up the blade. We place pigment into the skin, and when it heals it replicates actual hair. It looks really natural and it’s a great way to achieve fuller brows without the hassle of makeup and filling them in constantly.” Koenig says the long-term benefit of microblading starts as early as the consultation. Clients can have the color custom matched to their hair color. “A lot of people dye their hair, so we custom match their eyebrow color, and I usually go just a shade darker than that because they heal about 30 percent lighter. Color theory is such a huge part of this. You really have to do it based on a few different things. Their age is a huge factor, the color of their natural eyebrow color, their skin undertones, and the desired look,” she explains. Koenig says that the two biggest benefits of microblading are ease of routine and empowerment. “Microblading isn’t just a cosmetic procedure, it is something that changes people’s lives.” A lot of things are worth good brows, but risking someone’s health is not, Koenig says. “Research your artist. Ask where they got trained. Ask to see healed work—if your artist can’t show you healed work, there’s a reason for that. It’s because it doesn’t look good.” Bottom line in all things brows? Resort to step one: get a good outline, then fill in the rest.

hef Carl Thorne-Thomsen graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English Literature and from Wichita State University with a Masters of Fine Arts. But eventually his passion for writing was replaced with a passion for food. He taught himself enough about cooking to find a kitchen job. He went on to work as a line cook at the popular Leawood restaurant 40 Sardines. In 2007, when Chef Michael Smith opened Michael Smith Restaurant in the Crossroads, Smith hired Thorne-Thomsen to be chef de cuisine. Thorne-Thomsen wanted to do more than be a cook for someone else’s restaurant, though, so he began working on the concept for story. in December of 2009. In August of 2010, his wife Susan found the Prairie Village location, and in May 2011 he opened his restaurant in The Village Shops.

What inspired you to create your own restaurant? I have always wanted to own my own restaurant, even before I knew how to cook. When I began learning how to cook I loved it, and I loved working with fresh ingredients. My first cooking job was at my wife‘s cafe. I can’t imagine not cooking. After ten years of working in the industry, I wanted my own restaurant and my wife/partner found a great location for story. in the Prairie Village shops.
What is story. best known for?
story. is best known for fresh bread, fresh seafood, great service, and an extensive wine list.
What is the "story" behind story.? I was a writer before I was a cook, but I always had an appreciation for food. The name story. is meant to signify that I'm a chef inspired and motivated by ingredients. I try to
source ingredients carefully, locally when I can, but whether local or not, I always try to find the best, freshest, most interesting. Inevitably, the more time I spend looking for and learning about ingredients, the more I wind up knowing about them—where they are grown, pastured, fished, and more.
What is your favorite culinary indulgence? Oysters on the half shell.
A COVID-19 has caused the restaurant industry to be much more complicated. How are you handling this crisis and what are your plans for reopening your restaurant? We've been serving a limited menu with curbside pickup and online ordering at storykc.com. We've also been hosting virtual wine dinners with winemakers. Our next virtual wine dinner will be June 7. We recently reopened the dining room, patio, and bar and continue to offer curbside pickup. We’ve expanded our patio seating and have socially distanced our tables and barstools. We continue to offer our daily specials and prix fix menus for curbside pickup and in the restaurant. We offer a Camp Lindo farms fried chicken special on Wednesdays, a burger special on Thursdays, and tacos on Sunday. Our current seasonal offerings include soft shell crabs and Alaskan halibut. We will host a California Central Coast wine dinner in the restaurant on June 25. Details and menus are online at storykc.com.
What is your favorite dish on your menu? Pork tacos. They aren’t on our menu yet, but they are soon to be on the menu. For now they are only offered on our taco nights.

PARENTING
PROS AND CONS OF A SMALLER CLASS SIZE IS PRIVATE EDUCATION WORTH THE COST?
WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK

MAY 2020
W
hen it comes to our children’s education, we want the best. We want them to learn the skills needed to tackle life’s greatest challenges, find a satisfying career, succeed in that career, live a fulfilling life, and perpetuate the values integral to society. Much of what our children learn comes from their teachers, peers, and classes, and these are mostly determined by where they attend school. This is why many parents ask whether private education is worth the financial cost. Do our children get out of it as much as we pay into it, or does it make more sense to send our children to public education? If you are looking for a simple answer, you will be disappointed. This is a question that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no, because much of it is determined by how much value you place on what is offered by private education.
Pros Numerous options: Did you know 21 percent of all U.S. schools are private? Many people associate private schools with only religious schools, but over 30 percent of them are non-religious. This shows the wide variety of private schools available for you to choose from. Each of those schools will have its own emphasis and purpose, allowing you to find the one that most closely aligns with your and your child’s goals and beliefs.* Consistent culture: Each private school comes with its own culture. This is true of public schools too, but public schools tend to be much larger and so it is typically more difficult to maintain a specific culture within the school. Because private schools are usually smaller, it is easier for leadership to successfully maintain a set culture, whether that be academic, religious, traditional, or something else entirely.
Accountability: Private schools tend to be smaller, so it is often easier to bring up a grievance or issue and find the department or person who is able to handle it. In a large institution or organization, it is easy to get lost in the sea of departments or employees who pass you on to someone else to handle the problem. This also extends to the parent side. Parents who pay for their children to attend private school tend to be more invested in their children’s education. RaeLea Frishman, who is third and fourth grade teacher at Midland Adventist Academy in Shawnee, Kansas, explains, “As a teacher, the parent involvement in private schools is a major benefit. Parents are invested financially in their child's schooling so I have found that there is greater communication and support.” Level of interaction: Many children thrive in situations where they receive more
one-on-one interaction. This rarely happens in large classrooms, which are typical for a public school. Private schools, on the other hand, have a lot of one-onone interaction between teachers and students, which can lead to faster and more thorough learning. Frishman explains, “On the academic side, a major advantage to private schooling is the small student-to-teacher ratio. Students have more one-on-one or small group time with teachers, allowing them a better chance at mastering lessons and skills.” This can also help keep certain students from being neglected or overlooked who would normally lag behind or become unmotivated.
vate schools come with their own culture and values, and sometimes it can be difficult to ensure you find the right one for your children. If you place your children in a private school that does not align with the culture you are seeking, it will be difficult or impossible to get away from that culture without moving your children to another school.
The most obvious downside to private school is that it costs a lot of money. But there are a couple of others that should be considered.
Fluctuating quality of teachers: Private schools tend to have tighter budgets, so on average they pay their teachers less and give them fewer benefits. Private schools have many excellent teachers, but it can be more difficult for them to fill certain positions. Oftentimes their pool of applicants is smaller, and their qualifying factors extend beyond academics into areas of extracurriculare life. This sometimes disqualifies academically sound applicants and instead allows applicants to be hired who are less equipped for the position.

OUTERINGLOW MEETS INNER BEAUTY THIS ESTHETICIAN'S PRACTICE WRITTEN BY MADISON OBERMEYER
It’s not often that esthetics or makeup meet auras and angels, but for Brookside-based esthetician Mae Monroe, it’s all in a day’s work. Monroe, 27, has built an entirely new perception of what beauty means for clients and Instagram followers alike, focusing on channeling spirituality and energy work into her practice. Early on, Monroe, who started her business at 22, set herself apart from the KC beauty crowd by specializing in eyebrows. Monroe says that while it was common to go to the nail salon and add on a quick eyebrow wax, it wasn’t common to have an entirely separate appointment for it. “Most people don’t trust someone

who is 22 years old with skincare,” says Monroe. “They’re like, You’re 22, what do you know about anti-aging?” But Monroe says she was able to ease her regulars into adding on makeup and facial appointments through her brow services. Now at 27, Monroe says she has officially retired from eyebrows—kind of. “I only take on brows if they pair it with a facial,” Monroe explains. “Doing makeup, facials, and energy work brings me more joy, and I get to spend more time with my clients than just doing a quick eyebrow wax. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.”
Emily Cochran, a client of five years, said one of the first times Monroe did her makeup, she was in awe of her skill. “She gives so much to her clients, which is why they love her,” Cochran says. “She is more than the best esthetician in Kansas City, she’s a role model, and I’m so blessed she is the one who keeps my skin looking beautiful and fresh!” As a businesswoman, Monroe strives for more in her practice. “The beauty industry has a thing called vanity—sometimes it can be very surface-level. I would like it to be much deeper,” Monroe explains.
Her work is a balance of esthetics and energy work. Her clients come to her for a connection that goes deeper than a few layers of makeup—healing facials with reiki and quantum touch. “Imagine when you come in for a facial, you receive energy work where I can tap into and see your energy field, and you get a reading as well,” Monroe laughs. “The best way to say it without sounding too far out there is to imagine you’re getting a psychic reading and a facial at the same time.” But Monroe doesn’t call herself a psychic. “I’m very intuitive and I’ve been picking up a lot of metaphysical skill sets, like quantum touch healing, reiki, and being able to channel and connect with spirit guides and angels. It's a whole different experience when adding that into a facial appointment,” she explains.
“It’s when I’m discussing these skin issues that clients really open up,” Monroe explains. “Depending on where the acne is on the face, it tells me a lot about where the acne is originating. Is it hormonal acne, stress acne, acne from the gut, an imbalance? That ties into what is going on in their energy fields.”
“To truly be beautiful, you need to feel and be beautiful inside, and it will showcase outside.”
Once pinpointing that imbalance, Monroe begins to transition the appointment with storytelling—telling the client where and why an issue is happening and how deep it is. Monroe smiles. “Most estheticians— and they don’t realize this—are healers. When you’re touching people, touching their face, you’re feeling something very energetic as far as the compassion in treating and giving the skin the love it needs. I can tell a lot about a person’s life by simply looking at their skin and touching their face.” As for her beauty philosophy? Inner and outer glow, Monroe says. “Working with me will have your skin and soul glowing!” she laughs. And then, on a more serious note: “To truly be beautiful, you need to feel and be beautiful inside, and it will showcase outside.” For appointments, contact Mae Monroe via her website. Services include bridal makeup, skincare, and energy work.
Monroe says she typically lets whatever her client is seeking help guide the appointment. “When you’re a businesswoman, you’re always wanting to find a solution for your client’s issue,” Monroe says. “I always put my businesswoman hat on first. This is what I can help you with, and this is how my services can complement what you are looking for.” Once the business side of the appointment is taken care of, she helps her clients understand what products they should be using, breathing techniques to try, and more. KACIE WORK-FROM-HOME THERAPY
My boss is making the employees physically go back to work. I’m healthy, but I’m not comfortable going into work with a lot of people quite yet. I can do my job from home. What do I say to my boss? Can I be fired if I don’t comply?
Yes and no. Is that answer confusing? So is 2020. The only people today who have lived through a pandemic are those still alive and kickin’ at 102 years old (and they’ve lived through a lot more than a pandemic). Businesses and individuals are navigating a “new normal” as we’re calling it. There are laws set up for refusing to go into work. Technically you can’t use “fear” as a reason to work from home. You can make the case for continuing to work at home, but your boss isn’t required to allow it. But, there is a loophole under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you have a diagnosed mental health disability—such as severe anxiety—and the pandemic is making your anxiety worse, you can ask to work from home as a reasonable accommodation under the ADA. I would suggest contacting a mental health specialist whether you’re going to go this route or not. We could all use some mental health therapy. It’s 2020.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...
FOR THE CLASS OF 2000 WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI
M
y 20-year high school reunion is this year. Like most events in 2020, it’s been postponed. Social media has allowed many of us to reconnect over the years, but Facebook doesn’t know everything. And while we’re talking about social media, can I get a hallelujah that social media didn’t exist in the year 2000. “Hallelujah, Julie!” To my fellow classmates from Olathe East, class of 2000, here’s everything you need to know to catch up on my life.
My name changed.
You’ll know me as Julie Crowder. A Crowder. No, I am not my younger sister. Please don’t relive our 10-year reunion with questions like, “How’s your sister doing? Does she like cheerleading for the Kansas City Chiefs? Is your sister married? Is she dating anyone? What’s it like watching your sister on the field at Arrowhead?” Hi, I’m Julie.
My eyebrows got way better. Why didn’t someone take the tweezers away from me? My hair got way better. It’s not
naturally better. Aging has started to take over. I have to pay a lot of money to keep a youthful appearance, but I do know what I’m doing when it comes to styling. And for those who attended K-State and saw me arrive on campus with a perm—I. Don’t. Know. Why.
Married. Kids. Divorced.
Hit-
ting all the life milestones.
I have a high schooler now.
Is that how young we looked? She’s going to bonfires and field parties.
Julie Burton is an Overland Park mom, writer, K-State lover, and bacon-hater. She is a blogger and contributing author to the humor book, But Did You Die?: Setting the Parenting Bar Low. Burton’s also been named one of the Today Show’s “funniest parents.” And yes, she really does hate bacon. Please don’t drop her as a friend. MAY 2020
Remember those? Remember how we would sneak our parents’ vodka in water bottles? And run from the cops? Wait, this reminiscing is backfiring. I’m the parent now.
Look at me now, English-teacherthat-gave-me-an-F. Not only did he give me an F at midterms, he also wrote out “Fail” on the sheet for my parents to sign.
Kansas City is still home.
I still remember high school.
Nope, never did high-tail it to live in NYC or LA. When I said, “I’m outta here” at graduation, I actually meant I was leaving Olathe to live in Overland Park.
I write for a living.
Why don’t teachers show up to these reunions?
Yes I do remember when you asked our teacher what his kid’s name was when he brought his son to class. Our teacher replied, “Ask him,” and then you said, “Hi, Askhim!” That was absolutely hilarious and I haven’t forgotten that in 20 years.
I was never voted “most likely to be successful.” You were right with that. Good call.
I peaked much later in life. Why do you think I want to show up at these things?

GOOD TASTES
INDULGE IN DECADENT STRAWBERRY GOODNESS THIS SUMMER WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY KYNDALL DURKEE

Once June graces us with her warm sunny days, strawberries begin to appear at local markets. Their scent is intoxicating. Their taste: pure strawberry. While satisfying on their own, strawberries make desserts extra special with their vibrant color and sweetness. Strawberry napoleons are the perfect grand finale to any memorable occasion!
Strawberry Napoleons Serves 6
INGREDIENTS 6 ounces cream cheese, room temperature 3/4 cup powdered sugar, divided 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup chilled whipping cream 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (half of 17.3-ounce package), thawed 2 pints strawberries, rinsed and sliced 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped 2 tablespoons chopped tarragon Fresh mint (optional)
DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 375°F. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and vanilla in a medium bowl until fluffy. Using the same beaters, beat the whipping cream in another medium bowl until peaks form. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture in three additions. Cover mousse and refrigerate. Roll out the pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to a 14- by 101/2-inch rectangle. Cut the sheet into twelve 3-1/2-inch squares. Pierce squares all over with fork. Sift 1/4 cup powdered sugar over the squares. Place the squares on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 12 minutes. Using a metal spatula, flatten the squares and continue baking until they are crisp and brown, about 5 minutes longer. Cool the pastry squares on the sheet. While the pastry squares are cooling, combine berries with sugar, vanilla bean seeds, and fresh tarragon and toss to coat. Place six pastry squares on your work surface. Spread each with 1/4 cup mousse. Top with berries. Cover with remaining pastry squares. Dust napoleons with remaining 1/4 cup powdered sugar. Place napoleons on plates. Serve with remaining berries, and garnish with fresh mint.
Notes: You can make the dough up to one day early—either stored as a dough ball or already rolled out and placed in the pan. Just make sure to wrap and chill the dough before storing. You also can bake the tart two hours ahead. Let it cool, then cover loosely with plastic wrap and keep at room temperature. Reheat, if desired, in a preheated 350-degree oven until warm, about 15-20 minutes.

APP OF THE MONTH
MEAL PLANNING IN AN APP
The gist: After spending some
time with Mealime I have to be honest, I still don’t get the name. Slightly funny name aside, though, this popular, free meal-planning app delivers on its promise of helping you shop for and prepare a week’s worth of personalized meals. Recipes are narrowed down via some 200 options, including diet (classic, low carb, Keto, flexitarian, paleo, etc.), allergies, dislikes, and number of servings per meal. As soon as I saw bell peppers on the list of ingredients available to dislike, my confidence in the app rose significantly. Anyone who recognizes these vile vegetables as deplorable clearly knows what they’re doing.
Having once been vegan, I wanted to see how well rounded Mealime’s animal-ingredient-free options were, and they measure up. The more challenging (and yummy) recipes are labeled as “Pro,” and are accessible only with a paid account ($4.17/month). But the free version of the app also features many helpful tags, such as “Most Popular” and “Budget Friendly.” My one complaint is that some categories—breakfast, for example—contain only Pro recipes, at least for vegans. From there, Mealime calculates your shopping list and even provides a grocery delivery option. Overall, this is a helpful app for simplifying your grocery shopping and meal making! Available on Android and iOS.
