WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR
PREVENTING BIRTHDAY PARTY BURNOUT July is a killer month in my house. The novelty of summer has worn off, the lack of structure that once seemed freeing is now a hindrance to any sort of productivity, and mostly — the natives are restless. Oh, and we have two (TWO!) kid birthdays in July. We don’t do big, fancy birthday parties in our house, but we do let the kids pick something every year to ring in their special day. More often than not, their “something” is at our neighborhood pool because it’s so darn hot. But after eight and 11 years (respectively) of almost continuous pool parties, the kids couldn’t get behind it for another year. “Why can’t we go to Snow Creek like we did for Jayden’s birthday?” Um, in July? “How about we do a big party at the park?” Again: July?

were mesmerized by Ariel is an understatement. She was magic. Worth every penny.
(Snorts with laughter.) Also, JULY!
(Of course after that, Ariel went with us to the pool. Because, you know … July!)
So, it was with great glee that I devoured this month’s Parenting column when it came across my desk. Unique birthday parties for children? Yes, please! I skimmed it — knew it was good stuff — and immediately handed it to my kids. Fifteen minutes later I had a red-lined version with handwritten notes on my desk. Carter is in for the Mad Science party, complete with a rocket launch, a fog bubble shower, indoor lighting, tesla foil, cotton-candy making, and a hovercraft ride. “Please don’t forget the rockets,” he wrote. Kate went gaga over the Young Chefs Academy. “Request to make pizza margherita,” she wrote. Done and done. Kate also reminded me that we had done another one of the options mentioned when she was younger. She had a Princess at My Party mermaid event in which Ariel was our guest of honor. To say the girls
Check out some more unique birthday ideas in our Parenting column on page 38, as well as some great “adventures” to be had this summer in our Around Town section. Happy July!

2. Turn your email push notifications off.
3. Turn off your social media when you’re trying to work. 4. Set boundaries for your work communication. Limiting your availability after work hours will benefit your health and your relationships, and make you more productive at work.

AROUND TOWN
BY JULIE BURTON Photos / Go Ape
A THRILLING KANSAS CITY Paddling down white water rapids. Hiking a serious incline. Surfing. Deep-sea fishing. It can be a bummer that none of these adventures can be found in Kansas City. Luckily, you don’t need to purchase a plane ticket anymore to find extreme adventures. Thrill-seekers, take note — this summer, make your rounds through extreme Kansas City.
SKYDIVING … INDOORS iFly Kansas City
10975 Metcalf Ave. • Overland Park • iflyworld.com
It’s the same sensation of jumping out of an airplane — only without the airplane. Indoor skydiving uses the technology of modern wind tunnels to force your body to “fly” in a chamber. Beginners start with a training session and are accompanied by an instructor. The iFly experience in the wind tunnel lasts as long as a typical jump out of a real plane. Advanced flyers can compete in freestyle and formation flying in a new sport genre called bodyflight. Cost: $70 for 1 flyer. $300 for a family package of five. $610 for up to 12 flyers. Restrictions/ages: Everyone over 3 years old are allowed to fly. Participants must weigh less than 250 pounds.
ROCK CLIMBING … UNDERGROUND The Cave
3150 Mercier St. • Kansas City, MO • thecavebouldering.com
Ten stories underground is The Cave, an indoor rock-climbing gym. The gym has more than 80 boulder routes, called “problems,”
12
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
which are set up for both beginners and experienced climbers. But this isn’t just rock climbing — bouldering is a form of rock climbing that doesn’t use ropes or harnesses to aid you. Most participants use chalk for their hands and climbing shoes. Bouldering problems are fewer than 20 feet to prevent injuries from falls. Cost: Adult daily pass: $11. Kids’ daily pass: $9. Monthly and yearly memberships are offered. Gear rental is available for a nominal fee. Restrictions/ages: No age restrictions or weight limits.
RUNNING … BASIC-TRAINING STYLE Try a mud run — a long-distance race on a grassy/muddy course with obstacles along the way. These obstacles can include climbing walls, crawling under barbed wire, or walking in waist-high water. Some obstacles are even more extreme. For instance, Rugged Maniac, taking place July 23 in Weston, Missouri, features a claustrophobia obstacle — in which you crawl through dark, enclosed spaces. Tough Mudder, taking place Oct. 8–9 in Sedalia, Missouri, has electric cables hanging down, ready to shock you as you run through them. Every mud run will put your physical fitness to a test, whether it’s by strength or stamina.
Cost: $90–$120 per ticket. Parking fees may also apply. Price varies according to time of sign-up. Restrictions/ages: 14 and older for Rugged Maniac and 16 and older for Tough Mudder. For kids ages 7–12, Tough Mudder offers a one-mile obstacle course.
SWINGING .. THROUGH THE TREES Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course
7331 Oakwood Dr. • Kansas City, MO • goape.com
The Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course is situated in Swope Park’s treetops. Participants use zip lines, Tarzan swings, and rope obstacles to navigate the course. After a 30 minutes of training, you are free to explore on your own. If you can climb a rope ladder, you should be physically able to make your way through this course in two to three hours. Cost: Adults: $58. Kids, ages 10–15: $38. Restrictions/ages: Participants must be 10 years and be at least 55 inches tall. The maximum weight limit is 285 pounds.
TUBING … DOWN THE WORLD’S TALLEST SLIDE Verruckt
9400 State Ave. • Kansas City, KS • schlitterbahn.com
Get strapped into a three-person raft and plummet 168 feet and 7 inches down this record-breaking water slide. In-person reservations
are taken on a first-come, first served basis at the base of Verrückt upon arrival of the park opening. The walk-up line is limited to a predetermined amount of riders until the line is closed. Cost: Adults: $42. Kids: $30 (but you can purchase park tickets at a discount online). If you don’t want to race the crowds for a reservation, Schlitterbahn offers a Verrückt Early Ride option. After reserving a spot online (at least two days in advance) for an extra $45, you may go before the park opens. Restrictions/ages: Minimum height is 54 inches. Your group of two to three riders must weigh 400–550 pounds with no single rider weighing more than 300 pounds.
GLIDING ... THROUGH THE SKY Zip KC
12829 Loring Dr. • Bonner Springs, KS • zipkc.com
After a short hike to the first zip line, you complete your journey zipping through the forest using pulleys suspended on cables that are mounted on slopes. As you advance through the course, zip lines get longer and towers get higher — up to 80 to 100 feet above ground. Tours can last up to three hours, depending on the package. Cost: $60–$100 per person Restrictions/ages: No age limits. Minimum weight is 70 pounds, maximum weight is 275 pounds.

APP OF THE MONTH
APP ALERTS YOU TO MOVIE SCENES YOU CAN MISS FOR A PEE BREAK The gist: You’re in the middle of a nearly three-hour summer blockbuster movie
— and kicking yourself for buying that extra-large soda. You need to run to the restroom, but don’t want to miss a potentially important part of the movie. Enter: the RunPee app. The smartphone app, available for both iOS and Android systems, tells you the best times to take a bathroom break at the movies. Just choose your movie, start the app when your flick begins, leave your phone on vibrate, and the app will alert you of the best “pee time.” While you’re in the john, the app summarizes what you’re missing. It also includes tips on whether you should stay through the credits for extra scenes.
The downside: If you don’t have an Android or iPhone, the app is unavailable for
you (m.runpee.com might be your best best). Limited-release movies are not available on the app. Sometimes, RunPee suggests leaving at important plot points. (They do this in spots that can be easily summed up, so you won’t be lost when you get back.)

WORKING IN THE SUITE LIFE: BLUSKY SALON SUITES BY JULIE BURTON Photos (this page) / Nicole Bissey Photo (opposite) / BluSky Salon Suites
There’s a secret salon nestled in Leawood, Kansas. The location is not a secret. The name, BluSky Salon Suites, isn’t a secret either. The secret lies within the stylists. Most people don’t know that sitting in front of a mirror in a salon suite means their stylist is good — really good — or they wouldn’t be there. Renting a suite in a salon shows a level of distinction that usually only those in the industry understand. Each stylist at BluSky took his or her career to the next level. BluSky Salon Suites’ secret: The stylists are their own bosses. “I think a salon with suites is what every stylist strives for. They go to beauty school; they work at a commission-based salon where they work up a clientele. Then they all go to booth rental or the suites,” says Diana Cheatham, co-owner of BluSky Salon Suites. The stylists, barbers, nail technicians, and estheticians arrived at BluSky Salon Suites with a reputation for being the best at what they do. To them, owning a suite at BluSky means they have it made. “We took the best qualities of a salon and put them in BluSky,” says Jamie Lingner, Cheatham’s daughter and co-owner of BluSky Salons Suites. “You get the best stylists that way.”
Surprise beginnings The mother-daughter duo found a career in the beauty industry — but it wasn’t planned for either of them. Cheatham attended beauty school as a newlywed after moving to Iowa. “My
16

mother suggested I try beauty school,” she says. “I’ve always liked working with hair, but it was never a lifelong dream. Once I went to school for it, I found out I was good.” Lingner didn’t have plans to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her dream was to work in broadcasting, but she ended up attending beauty school as well. “Looking back, I was cutting my friends’ hair. I was into it,” Lingner laughs. “My friends thought that since my mom cut hair, I would be good too. I was just in denial because my mom did it. But I never regretted my decision once I went to hair school.”
“ We took the best qualities of a salon and put them in BluSky. You get the best stylists that way.” — Jamie Lingner Cheatham and Lingner have worked together for the past 13 years, sharing the same chair and space for most of that time. This type of set-up means they rarely worked side-by-side since they held different hours and different days with their own clientele. As the women moved up in the beauty industry, they discovered what stylists really want. “Once we worked in the suite environment, we never wanted to work in an open salon again,” Lingner explains.
“My favorite thing here is watching businesses and stylists grow,” she continues. “When someone wants to rent a suite from us, we know they’ve made a name for themselves. We are a small community of the best stylists with a large clientele. We all know each other in this business.” Cheatham agrees, “Clients are happy. They’re excited to get here, excited to sit, and excited to leave. The stylists are happy, too. It’s perfect.” A perfect salon with distinguished stylists nestled in Leawood, Kansas? That’s a pretty big secret. Appointments may be booked with each stylist on BluSky Salon Suites’ website: bluskysalonsuites.com. BluSky Salon Suites is at 5051 W. 134th St. in Leawood.
Mother-daughter team Diana Cheatham (at left) and Jamie Lingner own BluSky Salon Suites.
Mama Resch’s is a gluten-free and allergen-friendly bakery. We specialize in hand-crafted small batch breads and gourmet sweets and treats.
It wasn’t until opening BluSky Salon Suites that Cheatham and Lingner found out what it’s like to work as a team without having the stress of managing anyone. Although each suite has is its own room with a glass door, the suites are not closed off from the rest of the salon. It’s quite the opposite — the salon shares a processing area in the back to allow clients to relax in massaging chairs and enjoy a cup of coffee or kambucha tea. “We merged the best of both worlds. We offer suites for stylists to rent, but we still give them the open-salon feel,” Lingner explains. “We’ve never seen anything like it.” These benefits trickle down to the clients. The gorgeous space — surrounded by fountains and an outdoor patio — is visually appealing. But clients will see other hidden gems in the salon. The check-in system is digital, sending a text message to the stylist when you arrive. Stylists are free to choose their own hours and which products they use. Most appointments are booked in advance and can be done online or directly with the service provider.

Lingner finds herself working behind the chair most days and Cheatham works on the business side. “Since opening BluSky a little over a year ago, I have found that my mom and I are very different, but it works out well,” Lingner says. “It was like we were meant to do this. It’s a great way to run a salon. It’s a fresh, team atmosphere. PHOTOS By AngelA C. BOnD

HOME & GARDEN
BY BETHANEY WALLACE
TECHY UPGRADES FOR YOUR HOME In 2016, there’s no denying that technology is getting pretty impressive. Smartphones can connect anywhere they can get a signal, and there’s some seriously incredible capabilities that come with it. Now homeowners and renters alike can gain access to real-time home security: locking their doors remotely, even viewing to see who’s ringing the doorbell as it’s happening — even when they’re miles — even — states away from home. And it’s all possible through the help of technology. And, of course, a strong internet signal and ample phone-battery life. With all-in-one systems or simple add-on upgrades, you can choose one or more of these awesome options to secure your home. Tommy Carroll of Chicago-based LiveWatch Security says home upgrades like these add peace of mind for homeowners. For instance, you have the ability to adjust the thermostat from work, check cameras to make sure your home is safe, or
18
| SIMPLYKCMAG.COM
set door locks on a timer to let in the kids after school — and lock once they’re safely inside. You also can do this manually via an app, Carroll says. This type of home monitoring, or “peeking” as he calls it, helps keep the home as safe as possible, even when you can’t be there.
Another industry trick, Carroll says, is making it appear as though someone is home. You can do this by setting various lights in different rooms on a timer so it appears as though someone is home. “If they think someone’s probably there, they’re not going to go to the trouble of breaking in,” he says of potential burglars.
“It can really help keep your property safe, even when no one’s home to watch it.” Other security features include police and fire truck-response services, as well phone-call follow-up after an alarm is triggered to see if all is well. These services are customizable with various security programs, and can work separately or in tandem with capabilities like light and thermostat apps. Another perk, he says, is that of energy-efficiency. Thermostats can be kept high or low when the house is empty and lights can be dimmed or kept on a timer to reduce excess usage. Or, if you forget to turn off the lights before leaving home, flipping the switch is as easy as using your smartphone. Get ultra fancy with your smart house and add upgrades like a programmable coffee pot, which you can set from bed so that your morning brew is ready for you at the exact moment you wake up. Energy-efficient appliances can help lower your power bill even further
(especially when working alongside light and thermostat upgrades), including a low-flush toilet, which pushes through waste with vacuum-powered air instead of so much water. Finally, for guests who might be arriving unannounced, consider a motion-detector light that illuminates as guests approach your house. This offers added security for the guests you want to see, as well as for those who aren’t welcome — all without high-jacking your electricity bill. You have plenty of simple yet effective tech upgrades that ensure peace of mind. Look into expanding your current tech abilities for an easy way to keep an eye on things, save on your bills, and make living in your home more fun — even on the days when you’re not there. It’s an affordable step that comes with ongoing benefits.

Granny Pods: A Nursing Home at Home If you have the joy and responsibility of caring for a parent or loved one as they grow older, you will understand the many difficult decisions that come with this role. Where your loved one lives when she can no longer care for herself is one of these difficult decisions. Many elderly people move into retirement homes, nursing homes, or maybe into their children’s homes. N2Care is offering a viable in-between op-
your family the closeness of having your loved one nearby without the complications of moving her into your house. Here’s everything you need to know about these unique homes.
What it is Similar to a tiny home, the Granny Pod offers the amenities of a retirement home or nursing home room. These spaces can be parked anywhere you can hook up to electricity and water, such as your backyard.
tion, though, with their MEDCottage. These “Granny Pods,” as they are often called, are perfect solutions for people who lack the room in their home in which to move in a parent. The MEDCottage (medcottage.com) gives

They come in different sizes and levels of luxury. MEDCottage’s Classic size is 288 square feet and contains a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. They are also handicapped-accessible and designed with safety in mind.
Features include rubberized floors in case of falls, built-in medication dispenser and reminders (for both your loved one and you), and air filtering. A remote monitoring system that tracks blood pressure, glucose, and heart rate can share these vitals with family or physicians.
How zoning works Zoning laws vary from county to county. Take a look at your local county’s zoning laws or talk to a professional. The good news, though, is that the tiny-home movement has put pressure on some lawmakers to change zoning laws to accommodate smaller mobile spaces. Also, dwellings used as temporary medical homes are exempted from many local zoning laws in certain areas.
How much they cost The classic size costs a little less than $40,000, while the 605-square-foot option costs about $61,000. But, anyone who has had a loved one live in a nursing home knows that can be an enormous expense. Depending on the amount of care your loved one needs, the MEDCottage could be a shrewd investment.

Grapes & Paints celebrates its fourth anniversary this summer, and as the first paint and sip — or BYOB — venue in the Kansas City area, it has pioneered the fusion of art and community in Kansas City. The last four years have seen Grapes & Paints grow from an idea into a studio that hosts classes, open nights, work parties, children’s parties, off-site events, and more. Through its comfortable atmosphere, customizable options, and strong community involvement, Grapes & Paints has created a successful business with satisfied customers. The painting studio is located in the heart of Overland Park, but you will forget you are in the city when you walk inside. The standalone building offers a relaxed, small-town feel. “The minute you walk in the door we do our best to greet you with a smile,” says Amy Pappas, founder and owner of Grapes & Paints. “We want to give you a sense of comfort and of being at home.” The interior, with its artwork-lined walls, is laid-back and perfect for

masterpiece look the way they would like. Grapes & Paints prides itself on being able to work with your needs or wishes. You can rent out the studio with as few as five adults, but Grapes & Paints accommodates large parties as well. Suzanne Ahlstedt has booked the studio on three different occasions — with varying party size. “I had called every studio for my 40th birthday party to figure out how they could accommodate our party, because it was a very large party, and the kind of painting we wanted to do,” Ahlstedt says. “Amy was so easy to talk to and fantastic about calling back, answering any questions, and making sure the studio was ready, and I just loved that. I love when places are easy to work with.” The staff works with you to customize your party and ensure you are comfortable. “The color palette of any painting can easily

The last four years have seen Grapes & Paints grow from an idea into a studio that hosts classes, open nights, work parties, children’s parties, offsite events, and more.
As Grapes & Paints moves into its fifth year of business, there is a lot to look forward to. It has recently partnered with local clothing store Charlie Hustle to provide First Friday fun, T-shirt and paint nights, and more. It continues to expand its impact on the local community as well. “Along with our strong supporters in the Overland Park area, we go mobile across the metro for corporate team builders, charity events, bridal showers, apartment complex gatherings, as well as our popular painting-on-the-patio parties for groups of more than 100 people,” Pappas says. Grapes & Paints continues to increase its impact. But, throughout all of its new endeavors, Pappas makes sure it holds onto the strength that has helped make it a success so far:
Over the past four years, Grapes & Paints has also left a lasting impact on the Kansas City community through its involvement with a number of local organizations and events. “We pride ourselves on our contributions to local churches, school fundraisers, animal shelters, and

Fitness Trackers: Mapping Out a Healthy Lifestyle, One Step at a Time Like it or not, we’re halfway through the not-so-new year. If a commitment to a healthier lifestyle was one of your resolutions for 2016, you might be searching for ways to increase your motivation. Although summers’ longer days and warmer weather make it easier to get moving outside, you still might be wondering how to take that first step or whether you’re on the right track. If you’re considering a wearable device or activity-specific app to help you reach your goals you’ll soon discover there are as many types available as there are people who find them useful. Some devices function as smartwatches, others measure heart rate, and still others track your sleep. Read on to learn why these local fitness devotees (and friends of mine) feel trackers and apps are — or are not — a perfect fit.

Both Laura Leverett, from Fulton, Missouri, and Suzy Meyer, from Leawood, Kansas, are Fitbit enthusiasts. Leverett wears hers every day. “If I’m out of bed and forget to put it on,” she admits, “I get mad that I wasted all those steps that didn’t get counted.” Leverett likes that the Fitbit is lightweight, and that it syncs with her iPhone.
she says. “But the apps do make it more convenient to keep you accountable and stay on track.”
Meyer, who is a walker, was surprised by the amount of time and effort required to reach her daily goal of 10,000 steps. “Prior to getting a Fitbit,” she says, “I thought I was regularly reaching that goal. That information alone has made the Fitbit a valuable device in my life.”
While it may appear that one particular brand is as synonymous with the term “fitness tracker” as Kleenex is with facial tissues, it turns out there’s more than one way to monitor your activity of choice: Consumer guide The Wirecutter recently named Garmin’s Vivosmart HR as a top pick. Garmin was Annalese Wright’s first choice as well. “I’m a huge fan of my Garmin vivofit,” Wright, who’s from Emmett, Idaho, says, “because it gives you all the benefits of the Fitbit for a smaller price.”
When it comes to fitness apps, MyFitnessPal is Leverett’s app of choice to track her calories and exercise, and Runtastic to track her runs. She also uses the Fitbit app to compete with friends. “I’ve always enjoyed running and working out and would do so if I had the apps or not,”
She especially appreciates the long-lasting battery and the red bar along the top that notifies her when she hasn’t moved for a certain amount of time. “The longer I am still, the larger the bar grows — which inspires me to move more,” Wright explains. “It has definitely been worth purchasing.”
LIKE IT OR LEAVE IT As a Weight Watchers leader, Terri Hall of Bellport, N.Y., supports members on their weightloss journeys by helping them navigate Weight Watchers’ digital tools. She’s always been a fan of activity monitors — moving up from a basic pedometer to, most recently, a Weight Watchers-endorsed Fitbit.
Although she does refer to the Fitbit app, she says she is more focused on the Weight Watchers app for both monitoring and challenging herself to increase her daily activity. “It’s easy to get caught up in all these great apps for different things but I do my best to be realistic,” she says.
“I love being active, but I’m not always successful when left to my own devices,” she confesses. “Wearing an activity monitor reminds and inspires me to move more than not.” For example, if she finds she is free for 30 minutes, Hall is now more likely to spend that time on a brisk walk rather than sitting down. “Honestly, it is one of the keys to help me maintain a healthy weight.”
Janice White, from Birmingham, Alabama, has been a certified aerobics instructor for 27 years and teaches 12 classes a week. She’s never gotten into counting calories or steps, and doesn’t use a fitness tracker or fitness apps. “I have always been an athletic person,” she shares, “and never needed anyone to encourage me to be active.”
Instead, people motivate her, so classes are best for her. “Working out is not just for physical appearances,” White says. “It’s a lifestyle that affects your mind and heart. I have heart disease in my family, so working out is essential.” Oftentimes, White notices that people tend to base their workouts on only a number. So, if the heart-rate monitor or step tracker reports a low number after class, people put blame on an instructor. White believes older adults have a good idea of how much they move and know when their heart rate is at a high level. She prefers the “perceived exertion” method of measuring how hard you feel your body is working based on a scale of 0–10, which White feels is more accurate.

DIGITAL ALLY OPEN: GOLF FUN FOR EVERYONE BY TINA KLUGMAN Photos / Mark Higgins
When you think of golf, do you think of charity, community involvement, and fun? The Digital Ally Open, a golf tournament held annually in Kansas City, not only provides locals and tourists with front-row access to a first-class golf tournament, but it also provides plenty of fun activities for all ages as well as raises major dough for designated charities. You don’t even have to like golf to have fun at the tournament! The Digital Ally Open (formerly known as the Midwest Classic) is a four-day tournament held each year at the Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate in Overland Park. It’s the official proving ground of the PGA TOUR. The Digital Ally Open tournament is part of the Web.com Tour, which is founded, owned, and operated by the PGA TOUR. It identifies players who are ready to compete and win on the PGA Tour, and it includes 24 tournaments like the Digital Ally Open, which are played across the U.S. and five other countries. More than 300 players compete over the course of the season for a PGA TOUR card, and only 50 players actually walk away with one Kelly Eddy, executive director of the Kansas City Crusaders, the not-for-profit host organization of the Digital Ally Open, has been involved in the golf tournament scene her whole life. Besides playing collegiate golf, she grew up on a golf course that had a Web.com Tour tournament and her family hosted a player, which kept her involved and passionate about what professional golf could add to a community. Now she runs the Digital Ally Open tournament, which is in its sixth year in Kansas City.

“We are one of the last events in the regular season before finals starts,” she explains. “So when the players get to us, it’s make or break. It’s a lot of fun to watch because you know where they are on that money list and they know exactly what they need to do and how they have to finish in order to get that PGA TOUR card. We had three of our guys win a couple of the very first PGA TOUR events last year. Golf not only entertains — it also brings in big money for charity. Through the Digital Ally Open, the Kansas City Crusaders have added approximately $6.2 million in economic impact to the metro each year since the tour began in 2011. They have also helped local charities raise more than $585,000. The entire PGA TOUR and its tournaments, which are structured as nonprofits, generate more money for charity than the NFL, MLB, and NBA combined. The total amount of money donated to charity via the TOUR surpassed the $2 billion mark in 2014, with $160 million of that amount generated in 2015 alone. 100 percent of all ticket purchases support local charities, through the Cocherl Family Foundation Tickets FORE Charity program. When you buy a ticket online, you can choose which charity you would like to support from a list of almost 60 charities. The tournament is sponsored by Digital Ally Inc., a Lenexa-based company that specializes in video equipment for law enforcement agencies, first responders, and commercial fleets. The net revenues generated by the tournament are split among four primary beneficiaries: Children’s Mercy Hospital, Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund (SAFE), Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. This year, they have added a bonus pool, Eddy says. Charities will have an opportunity to receive a share of the $15,000 Linney Family Foundation Bonus Pool, which will be split among the participating charities. “At the end of the summer, after tournament week is over, we will figure out the total tickets sold, what percentage each charity has, and they’ll get that percentage of $15,000,” she explains. “We’re pumped about that.” The tournament is fun for people of all ages, golf fans, and nonfans alike. The tournament kicks off with a 5K that takes place the Saturday before. A “family night” on Monday evening features a free junior golf clinic taught by the pros, and a golf trick shot show that makes the kids ooh and aah. Kids also will be able to check out fire trucks, police cars, and a bomb squad unit. Later in the week, kids can hang out with pro players on the 18th hole and get their autographs. Also later in the week is a young professionals’ party — open to all KC-area young professionals — and a Chamber After-Hours event presented by DataMax that is open to the public, complete with food, drinks, and business networking. Tickets are $25 for weekly ground passes, $10 for daily ground passes, and military, first responders, and all children ages 14 and under are free. Visit digitalallyopen.org for more information and to purchase tickets.

4 PLACES TO EAT HEALTHY EVEN WHILE ON THE GO With so many people having food sensitivities and gut issues (due to the pesticides and preservatives), we have had to make a change in how we eat. One of the hardest things to do is “eat clean” on the go. Up until about three years ago, it was difficult to find a healthy eating place to just pop in and grab a snack, much less a drive-up window to get a cold-pressed juice. Thankfully, the market has shifted and we are seeing more all-natural, organic, and gluten- and dairy-free restaurants popping up in Kansas City. Whatever your dietary needs may be, plenty of shops in the metro can now provide you healthy meals and snacks — even if you are in a hurry.
T.Loft paved the way for healthy eating as one of the first juice bars in KC. Aside from juices, you will find snacks such as protein balls and clean lunch options that include fresh salads and quinoa bowls. T.Loft’s food is made on the spot, and you can eat in the cafe or take it with you. Its four locations include Park Place, Leawood (80th and State Line), The Country Club Plaza, and Lawrence. The Plaza location also offers a drive-thru — you can call ahead and conveniently pick up your order at the window. A new addition to Brookside is Unbakery Juicery. Located at 63rd and Holmes, this quaint spot offers up unique

creations packaged perfectly for the eater on the go.

Chia-seed pudding cups come with a lid and a spoon stuck right into the cup so you won’t fumble around with finding your utensils. The bakery has an acai ting bowl that is popular with kids, as well as pad thai made with zucchini and seaweed noodles, raw falafel, kale, and caesar salads. Its “un-gluten” bars are like a healthy chewy granola bar. Perfect when you want a sweet treat, but don’t want to sacrifice your diet! The best part is that you never have to get out of your car thanks to its drive-thru.
Enjoy Pure Food + Drink just opened its doors this past April. With a dream team of Michael Smith (the culinary director), Karen Kipps (the juice goddess/ holistic practitioner), and Tess Masters (the smoothie queen and author of The Blender Girl), this shop had a recipe for success from the start. Photos above / Enjoy Pure Food + Drink
Enjoy sources its products from local farms to create not only a healthy, but all-natural and organic menu. You will find breakfast items such as the vegan and gluten-free “Clean Livin’” bowl — made with acai, almond milk, banana, blueberries, and vanilla protein. You get your choice of toppings like organic gluten-free granola, coconut flakes, almonds, or flax seeds. The lunch and dinner menus have a variety of items such as cold salads, warm quinoa, and zucchini noodle bowls, as well as sandwiches and wraps. Enjoy also offers a full line of cold-pressed juices created to nourish and heal your body. Visit Enjoy in Mission Farms. Finally, Simple Science Juices is one of the few raw, organic, cold-pressed juicers in Kansas City. Simple Science is known for its juices, but its organic snacks and grab-and-go foods are amazing too. The “neuro ball” is a combination of blueberry, coffee bean, flax seed, shredded coconut, vanilla extract, cashew, almond, raw local honey, and coconut oil. It’s fulfilling and slightly sweet — just the thing to cure your midday sweet tooth.

PETS
BY BETHANEY WALLACE
‘Rodent’ Pets: Nuisance or Beloved Part of the Family? Some call these animals unwelcome guests. Others call them best friends. It’s all how you look at your preferred type of furry friend. Perhaps you don’t like pets to have fur at all. Despite the bad rap that “rodent” pets get, however, they have been ideal companions for years. Breeds generally considered rodents include rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas, lizards, guinea pigs, and rats. These breeds have the ability to love and bond with their human owners as does any other pet. All the animals need is a little TLC and a lot of love. In fact, it’s the latter that can make or break the entire bonding experience. “You can train every animal — even fish,” says Andi Smith, who has worked at Shawnee-based Pet Stop for 40 years. “They all have their own personality. The more time you spend with them the better they become.” This includes not just playtime, but caregiving time as well. Guinea pigs, for instance, can develop a condition known as “wet tail” the more often they play. Smith says it’s similar to the common cold but is easily prevented with medicine. The key, however, is noticing when it develops. Smith says that with each pet, it’s all about proper living conditions, diet, and water. “Clean their cage about once per week,” she says. “It’s pretty simple.” At Pet Stop, employees help instruct you on proper care — such as habitat type, temperature preferences, food options, handling, and more — for your pet of choice. It may surprise you to learn that hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, and rats are popular pets at Pet Stop. Smith believes it’s because “when people see them they want to learn more and ultimately decide they want to have them as a pet,” she says. No matter what type of reputation a pet might have, you will find you get plenty of love from properly treating and caring for the animal. Stop by your favorite pet store to get tips on obtaining your new best friend, and learn what steps you should take to ensure your pet will be properly taken care of.

GOOD TASTES
BY LINDSAY WEISS

The Perfect Marriage of Syrupy and Creamy Canned pie filling is one of those ingredients I’ll almost always pass on. It’s too artificially gooey and sticky — and the texture just seems wrong for me in a pie. But it is perfect in these trifles because you want that thick, syrupy goodness to drizzle down into the cheesecake and get married. They belong together. This would not be as good with just fresh fruit, and that is the only time you’ll ever hear me say that! These no-bake treats are perfect to make in advance of your Fourth of July gathering. Just bring them out at the last minute. You can make these in any container you want — wine glasses, martini glasses, mason jars — even regular old cups. You also can make it into one big trifle and then face plant right into it. Kidding. (Not really.) You will be the most popular person at your Fourth of July gathering if you bring these. No one has to know how ridiculously easy they are — except you!

Red, White, & Blue Cheesecake Trifles Yield depends on containter size*
Ingredients
Directions
1-1/4 cups graham cracker crumbs
To make the crust layer, combine graham crackers, 1/4 cup of the sugar, and melted butter. Set aside.
1/2 cup sugar, divided 1/3 cup butter, melted 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 8-ounce container Cool Whip, defrosted 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1 can cherry pie filling
In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, and remaining 1/4 cup of sugar. Stir in the Cool Whip and lemon juice. Begin layering in jars or cups in this order: graham crackers, cheesecake filling, cherry-pie filling, graham crackers, cheesecake, blueberry-pie filling. If you don’t want individual servings, this can be made in a trifle or 13 x 9 pan. If you do this, press the graham crackers into the bottom of the pan and let it chill while you make the filling so you get more of a “crust” on the bottom layer.
1 can blueberry pie filling * Total yield depends on the size of your containers. I’ve made these in wine and martini glasses and gotten 8. When I make them in small pint-size jars I get 12. So my best advice is just keep going until you can’t. You will have A LOT of cheesecake filling, so be generous with that. Go light on the graham cracker layers.

KC Boutique Spotlight: Dear Society At the corner of 36th and Broadway sits a darling boutique called Dear Society. This Westport gem just opened its doors this spring, yet it has already developed a cult following. Owners Chanel Little and Maria Casteel have created a perfectly curated shop, dedicated to all things “dear.” You will find vintage apparel, accessories, and home decor mixed with new. It is the perfect mix of edgy, vintage, and eclectic. To get to know Dear Society a little better, we asked the owners a few questions.
SKC: What inspired you to open your boutique? DS: Before opening Dear Society, both of us had our own clothing businesses. Maria had opened Adelaide’s Homesewn seven years ago and sold her vintage goods on Etsy and at Bella Patina in the West Bottoms. Chanel started Bogatte, an online clothing boutique about four years ago. Opening a store where people could come experience our vision and our energy through a physical space was something we both had dreamed about creating.

Expect a revolving storefront and newly added merchandise every time you visit the shop. Our inventory consists of modern and vintage apparel, home goods, and locally made gifts for women, men, and children. We are very inspired by the 1960s and ’70s and that shows through the store design and product offering.
What are your favorite items at Dear Society? Currently, Maria’s favorite items include the denim culotte jumpsuit with peek-a-boo cutout and our locally made crystal geode bookends. Chanel’s favorite items include our selection of vintage minimal knit dresses and all the beautiful goods from our local makers — including the weavings, geode displays, and buttery-soft leather bags.

When you’re in a car for hours at a time, it’s all about comfort. A lightweight hoodie is something you will never regret packing.
Don’t get locked out! Pack a duplicate set of car (and house) keys in a separate bag.
They’re just so dang practical. They’re great for organizing clothes, storing spill-risk bottles, stashing electronic cords, saving documents, keeping food, and tons more.
Not only will it keep your mane looking fresh — it also boosts volume, can keep your bangs from sticking to your forehead, and can be used as deodorant or to soak up oil and sweat (perfect for your back or thighs on super-hot days).
They’re handy for everything from cleaning sticky fingers to removing your makeup to wiping down toilet seats in sketchy bathrooms.
Save yourself a trip to an auto mechanic while you’re on the road by using this diagnostics reader to get a sense of what’s going on with your car. Many will work with your smartphone or tablet (typically an Android operating system) or Windows PC.
Just to be on the safe side, keep a tank of gas in your trunk and a bottle of motor oil. You’ll be so grateful if you overestimate how far that last bit of gas will get you.
