PUBLISHER’S NOTE
SOLVING THE SUMMER CHILDCARE CHALLENGE Whether you’re a working or stay-at-home parent, summer presents a common conundrum. What the heck do we do with the kids all summer? Stay-at-home parents may be dreading the thought of how to keep the kids entertained day in and day out. Working parents may struggle with coordinating childcare and activities every day for the next 10 weeks. We all know keeping children entertained—and safe (and sometimes just out of your hair)—is difficult nearly all the time. But during the summer, kids seem to have so much extra energy. It’s all you can do to not shoo them outside and lock the door behind them. Believe me, I've been there. But mine are 16 and 14, so I can tell you: it does get easier. We have come to your aid, parents of littler kids. Our Parenting column offers several options and information about in-home and outside childcare. Turn to page 28 to learn about au pairs and nannies, plus tips for finding quality, trustworthy childcare providers. Whatever you decide about childcare this summer, I hope you find some time to enjoy some of those carefree summer days with your kiddos. Kansas City provides plenty of options for all ages, and you’d be doing yourself—and your children—a disservice if you didn’t all enjoy some of them together. Stay safe and cool out there!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Amanda Turk
Who: What:
AMANDA TURK She might have one of the coolest jobs in Kansas City. Amanda Turk is the director of publicity for the 2015 World Series champions Kansas City Royals. Her job is to handle the press releases and media requests for the business side of the Royals’ marketing, partnerships, and community events. She selects and schedules the Buck O’Neill Legacy and military tribute seats. She also plans and executes the Baseball Fantasy Camp for Kids in Kansas City and Surprise, Arizona. Turk also serves on the board of Noah’s Bandage project, a nonprofit that collects “fun” bandages for kids with cancer and raises money to fund pediatric cancer research.
Where:
FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE I love brunch at Summit Grill because it’s classic and we always have a good time. I’ve spent many long Saturdays there. I often find myself at The Granfalloon on the Plaza because the food is always good. We’ve had birthday parties, going away parties, and tons of Royals watch parties there. I’m also a huge fan of El Patron Cocina and Bar. Their happy hour is amazing and I could eat their chips and salsa and drink their ‘ritas for too long. I love going to the movies and having popcorn and wine (if you haven’t had it, it’s a fabulous combo). Screenland Armour Theatre in North Kansas City has amazing popcorn. It’s a great theater with fun theme nights too!
FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK XR Café in The Crossroads Hotel has recently become a go-to.
They’ve got a great, swanky vibe with a large drink selection and a nice happy hour. The hotel’s rooftop bar, Percheron, is a go-to when it’s nice outside. I also frequent iTap, The Quaff Bar and Grill, and Boulevard Brewing when I’m looking for something casual.
FAVORITE SHOPPING I love going to Bella Patina on First Fridays. They have such a great selection of the most random but lovely stuff. I’ve bought everything from wine glasses to faux fur to personalized wall décor.
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS Panache Chocolatier is the greatest place in the world. It’s adorable, the staff are so sweet, and the chocolate is indescribable. It’s one where words can’t explain how great it is—and I’m a PR person! Just go. In a city full of microbreweries, I’m a sucker for Stockyards Brewing. The beer is great, they’ve got awesome music, and it’s got this old-school country vibe. And for brunch, because brunch is top notch in my book: Drunken Worm.
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS The K, of course! I bring everyone out to catch a game, because it’s my passion and a great stadium. It’s also loaded with so many good options for food and drinks. You can find anything you want, whether you want a hot dog and beer or crab cakes and wine.

MIND & BODY
BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE, BE LESS CRITICAL OF YOURSELF WRITTEN BY CHELSEA BRIMER
Almost everyone can benefit from a confidence boost now and then, but what, exactly, is self-confidence, and how can you increase it? Simply put, self-confidence is a sense of satisfaction with, and trust in, your feelings, abilities, and personal judgment. It’s what allows you to be positive yet realistic about yourself and your situations.

JULY 2019
So what happens when you don’t feel confident? According to the Mayo Clinic, “low self-confidence can negatively affect virtually every facet of your life, including your relationships, your job, and your health.” But there are steps you can take to boost self-confidence, even if you’ve felt bad about yourself for years. Perspective plays an important part in how you see yourself and the world around you—the whole “glass-ishalf-empty” versus “glass-is-half-full” business. Both viewpoints are true, but one allows for a more positive outlook on life than the other. If you can learn to adopt the glass-is-halffull view, your self-confidence will start to rise. For instance, if you find yourself always running late, don’t beat yourself up over it—acknowledge the fact that you may show up late, but at least you always get there. Another way to help change your perspective is to start focusing on your talents instead of your flaws. What do you love doing? What is it that you do well? Take pride in those things; it will
help you feel accomplished, which in turn will help build your confidence. Next, recognize your insecurities and listen to your thoughts about them. According to the Mayo Clinic, self-criticizing situations might include a family crisis, business presentation, job loss, or trouble with a spouse, loved one, or coworker. What do you tell yourself about those situations or behaviors? Are you beating yourself up? Pay attention to your self-talk and see if you can take a more positive outlook or approach. Make sure you are not comparing yourself to others. Boosting your self-confidence means improving yourself and the way you feel, not trying to make your life exactly the same as someone else’s. Their lives are irrelevant to yours; what is relevant is caring about yourself and advancing your own personal goals and aspirations. So forget about them! Do some soul searching of your own and find out what standards you want for yourself.
Once you begin changing your perspective, you can start taking actions to boost your confidence. Here are some tips and tricks you can use to keep self-criticism in check and kick your self-confidence into high gear:
Accept compliments gracefully. Don’t roll your eyes or say negative things about yourself in response. Smile and thank the person who complimented you.
Take up more space.
Check your body posture throughout the day—are you slouching? Leaning forward? Making yourself look smaller? Sit or stand up straight and throw back those shoulders! Studies have shown that confident posture projects confidence to others, and will in turn make you feel more confident.
Help others. Even little things like holding the door open for others or being sure to thank those who help you will brighten your day. And when those around you see you being kind and helpful all the time, they will be more kind and helpful, too. And then you’ve made the world a better place. Put care into your appearance. You don’t have to look like Cindy Crawford or George Clooney, just take some time every day to maintain basic personal hygiene: shower, brush your teeth, fix your hair, and wear clean clothes that fit you properly. People tend to treat you with more respect when they can see that you treat yourself with respect.
Make eye contact. (But don’t be
Avoid negative people.
That friend who always one-ups you with the latest and greatest of everything or who pities you for one reason or another—kick her to the curb. Part of maintaining your own self-confidence is making sure those around you aren’t trying to bring you down.
Be thankful. No matter what you do or don’t have, you surely have more than some. And being thankful for the family, home, job, vehicle, or life you have is a powerful way to maintain a positive attitude. Keeping these pointers in mind will help make sure your self-confidence is top-notch and help you keep self-criticism at bay.

KACIE A SCRATCHY SITUATION
I love my husband. I really do. But my husband is growing out his beard and I hate it. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I’m done playing the “I’m not going to kiss you” game. Am I shallow? What do I do?
Grow your leg hair out. Okay, that’s terrible advice. Don’t listen to that. Look, your husband’s body is his body. And your body is your body. It’s fine to voice your opinion about what you do and don’t like. Be clear about what you like but also be clear you are together no matter what. Then ignore it. You don’t want him to feel pressured because of you. You definitely don’t want to repeatedly bring this up or “nag,” as they say. This shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. If it feels that way, please go see a marriage counselor. Besides, it’s July now. He’ll probably get hot and go shave it anyway.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

B.E. SMITH FAMILY CENTER OPENS A WORLD OF POSSIBILITIES WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER
When Coraley was born in April 2018, her family faced a lot of unknowns. Diagnosed with Down syndrome, she came into the world seven weeks early. “It was the first of many surprises I’m sure she’ll give us in her lifetime,” says her mom, Emily Freund.
dren ages birth to six years with a variety of special needs, including Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and spina bifida. It currently serves over 200 children each week. Individualized programs are designed for each child by a team of physical, occupational and music therapists, speech-language pathologists, early childhood special education teachers, behavior analysts, and social workers. “Our primary job is to support families as they begin an unexpected journey,” says Amy Milroy, director of Britain Development. “While we provide direct therapy for the children, we believe our most important role is to educate families. They’re the ones who will make the difference in the child’s life.” The new space brings together two programs, Britain Development and Early Learning, which were previously in separate buildings. Early Learning provides faith-based childcare and education to children of the physicians and team members of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. It currently serves over 600 children a year and is the largest childcare center in Kansas.
Coraley, Photo by Emily Freund
Because of her early birth, Coraley spent six weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. During that time, Emily and her husband, Adam, met with therapists from Britain Development, an outreach program at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission dedicated to serving children with special needs. The team worked with Coraley and her parents on feeding therapy, including how to latch and get enough milk. After Coraley went home, her parents continued to work with the same therapists at Britain Development over the next year.
“It was so nice to see a familiar face who knew her history and the things we were working on,” says Freund. “And it was comforting to know they’d be there for us even after we left the hospital.” Today, Coraley is one of the children to receive support and therapy at the new B.E. Smith Family Center at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. The $24 million facility had a grand opening on April 30. For families of children with special needs, early intervention is key. By including both programs together, children of all abilities will be able to grow and learn together. “We’re really excited about having Early Learning and Britain Development together to promote inclusion,” says Milroy. “Kids with special needs benefit greatly from playing and interacting with other children. The children and families at Early Learning will have a better understanding and acceptance of disabilities.” The new building was made possible by a fundraising donation from Doug and Nan Smith to AdventHealth Foundation Shawnee Mission. Construction began in March 2018 and was completed in just over a year. The B.E. It is also the only building in the world to have 2,800 square feet outfitted with the Variety KC Compass Harness System, which helps kids increase mobility and navigate their environment. “In our world, we learn by exploring,” says Milroy. “When children can get where they want to go, it helps them develop in other areas, like social and communication skills. play and interact.” It’s something that Coraley will start to use when she is learning to walk. This year, she celebrated her first birthday, and is a happy, social toddler. She’s working on crawling, but right now, she uses rolling as her primary means of mobility. Freund attended the open house for the B.E. Smith Family Center and says she was excited about the fun things
Coraley will experience, including the music therapy rooms and playground. She noted the new music room with stars on the ceiling that can change color and brightness. “One of Coraley’s favorite things to do is to lay down and look at the stars,” she says. “I know she’s going to love it.” For more information about the new B.E. TRAVELING TRAINERS BRINGS FITNESS TO YOU WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
Many people feel intimidated by just the thought of joining a gym. Working out in a room full of complicated machines among people who are fit and skilled can be scary. Memberships can be costly too. The good news is, this doesn’t have to be the case. There are ways to access a healthy lifestyle without even leaving your home. Traveling Trainers, based in Lenexa, Kansas, brings personal training to your doorstep. JaCory Marshall started Traveling Trainers to make fitness more convenient and customizable. By making it simpler, each individual using the program finds meeting their goals more attainable. Traveling Trainers began with just Marshall, but now has five train-

ers working to help Kansas Citians reach their goals. Their services include fitness, one-on-one training, small group training, nutritional plans, and even providing the equipment for each session. “My goal when starting this company was to extend the benefits of fitness to those who couldn’t afford it or couldn’t access it,” explains Mar-
shall. What is unique about Traveling Trainers is their ability to bring fitness to the home, office, park, or anywhere else it is requested. This makes people more comfortable, and increases the likelihood they stay committed to their wellness goals. The trainers are also capable of working in small living spaces. As long as you have a 6 foot by 6 foot area for the workout, you are set.
“We take a customized approach, because each individual is different. We come to them and sit down in a place they’re comfortable,” says Marshall. “We go over their past, present, and future situations, and from there we develop a plan of action.” To track fitness goals there is a monthly assessment to make sure clients are developing on course. “My favorite thing about Traveling Trainers is the people we serve—understanding where they are coming from and where they aspire to go,” he adds. The trainers work around your busy life and routine. They get to know what will work best for you, how many times per week you should work out, as well as a diet to follow. They are committed to determining the needs of every individual. This allows them to customize a plan that applies directly to you. Their helpfulness and encouragement towards clients on their wellness journeys goes past physical activity as well. If you need help sorting out medications or creating a meal plan, for example, they will help.
“The best move I ever made was adding JaCory Marshall’s Traveling Trainers to my weekly lifestyle,” says Maribeth Samenus, a client of Traveling Trainers. “We are all busy, and know we need to exercise, but knowing and doing are separate animals. Working out at my home every week keeps me accountable.”
“The best move I ever made was adding JaCory Marshall’s Traveling Trainers to my weekly lifestyle.” The trainers are extremely qualified as well. They have background checks, are certified nationally, and have to have at least one year of training experience. No matter which trainer you choose, in order to find the best match for you, they will all be equally qualified.
The first session you receive is free, which include a one-hour consultation and a look at what the workout sessions will be like. There is no further obligation after this. If you decide to continue with Traveling Trainers, the following sessions start at $30. They also allow a second person to work out with you for free. On average the trainers work out with the same clients twice a week, but can increase to three depending on what is right for the individual. They can also be as short as 30 minutes if that is what is best for you. “We have been utilizing Traveling Trainers going on three years now and could not be happier,” says David Duffield, another client of Traveling Trainers. “Not only do they come to us, but the trainers customize the workouts based on our fitness and wellness goals. They push us to be better at each session, and I couldn’t see myself doing it on my own.”

GIVING A LIFT WITH AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY: ROAD TO RECOVERY WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON
Mary Ann Fisher meets extraordinary people in an odd place. She meets them in her car. Fisher is a volunteer for the American Cancer Society’s nationwide program called Road to Recovery. Road to Recovery provides free transportation to and from cancer treatments for people who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. The program relies on volunteer drivers to fulfill the needs of Kansas City’s demand for transportation. Fisher discovered the program on the news after she moved to Kansas City. Since retiring, she needed something to fill her time, and she decided the program would be a good way to learn the streets of

Kansas City while also giving back to the community. Fisher learned much more than just her way around Kansas City. “I’ve been volunteering for three years. My original purpose isn’t there anymore. I volunteer to take people to their cancer treatments because I like talking to them,” Fisher says. “This is the hardest part of their lives. They get in the car and they’re so grateful. They inspire me. They have enough worries, getting a ride to a chemo or radiation treatment shouldn’t be one.” The Road to Recovery is looking for more volunteers. Thousands of cancer patients need rides to and from their appointments in the Kansas City area. The best treatments in the world won’t work if the patient can’t
get to the treatment center. The demand for transportation is for a variety of reasons—family may not be in town to help, support systems may be exhausted, or it may be as simple as they don’t have a car. Transportation to cancer treatments is a huge problem across the United States, not only in Kansas City. The American Cancer Society screens and trains volunteers for the Road to Recovery program. Once approved, you can start driving. Road to Recovery uses a computer program to coordinate the patients and the drivers. Similar to Uber or Lyft, patients sign up and volunteers choose which rides work with their schedules. The program allows volunteers to stay within a certain mileage radius if they wish. The time commitment is up to the volunteer.
Many volunteers include retirees, stayat-home parents, college students, and anyone just wanting to give back. Amy Haynes is the director of communications at the American Cancer Society. “It’s a heartwarming program. The volunteers form lifelong bonds. It’s really like a therapy session in a car,” Haynes boasts. “We have a never-ending need for drivers.” Fisher has met many patients over the years, but one patient stands out in Fisher’s mind. She called him “the mayor” because he seemed to know everyone in town. “There wasn’t a person he didn’t know. He knew all the backroads to take and he had a story about every building we passed,” Fisher says. Fisher dropped off “the mayor” at his chemo treatment and told him she would be back in a few hours to take him home. She told him to call her when
he was finishing chemo so she could be on time. A few hours later, Fisher realized his pickup time was getting close. He never called. She drove to the treatment center and walked into the waiting room. It was there where she found “the mayor” talking to everyone getting ready to receive chemo. He was comforting each patient long after his chemo treatment had ended. “He touched me. He really did. That’s why I do this,” Fisher explains. “You’re always going to get back what you give. I hope more people volunteer for the program. Transportation should be the last thing anyone with cancer has to worry about. You’ll meet extraordinary people who are in a vulnerable spot in their life. These people live their life with grace, and it’s an honor to watch that.”
How to volunteer for the Road to Recovery: Sign up at Cancer.org/drive All drivers must have: • A current, valid driver’s license • A good driving record • Access to a safe & reliable vehicle • Regular desktop, laptop, or tablet computer access • Proof of car insurance • Be in between the ages of 18 & 80

CHOOSING CHILDCARE
THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER
Finding the perfect childcare provider, especially beyond the occasional babysitter, can be a stressful experience. Go Au Pair offers J-1 visas to foreign students, which typically allows a one-year stay, but the time period is flexible and the visa can be re-upped.

The family is also responsible for a reasonable “education contribution” (about $500) so that the au pair can attend college courses.
French for “at par” or “equal to,” au pair is the title given to a young person from a foreign country who lives with a family in order to provide childcare and learn about the country’s culture. The idea is that both parties are providing and receiving, making them “equal to” each other. This flexible, affordable option for families provides the opportunity to select from a wide range of skills, experience, and backgrounds. All au pairs go through a formal
“I think the most exciting aspect of the program is the ability to make great matches between the families and the au pair,” Green says. “Ideally, the family gains another family member. And then there’s the cultural exchange component, which has so many wonderful benefits.” For example, Scientific American Magazine recently ran an article called “How Diversity Makes Us Smarter.” The article focused on how being around people who are differcontinued on page 30

ENJOYING THE GOLDEN YEARS
RUSH ERRANDS SENIOR CONCIERGE SERVICES CATERS TO INDEPENDENT SENIOR LIVING WRITTEN BY NATALIE CHRISTIE MCGOVERN / PHOTO (THIS PAGE) BY JAMI MARSHALL

running errands to gardening. Rush offers a multitude of non-medical services, including grocery shopping, pet sitting, house sitting, or just simple companionship. Clients often need rides to doctor’s
appointments, need to be accompanied on walks, need help with regimented medication schedules, or need a personal assistant to deal with daily tasks and chores. The need is there, but clients are
often hesitant to ask for help so they do not burden their families. A concierge service helps lighten that load. The senior health care and concierge service industries are growing to serve a wider and more rapidly growing population. It is estimated that by 2020 nearly 14 million people in the United States will be over the age of 85. With this growing demographic, more and more concierge services are catering to fit the needs of aging adults nationwide. Professional caregivers that offer an alternative to assisted living situations are in high demand, and offer an attractive advantage for families with hectic schedules. For Rush, it was nostalgia and the desire to help that inspired her business venture. In high school, Rush worked at an old-fashioned soda fountain drugstore where she made friends with many senior citizens who came in and told stories of their past. Rush learned of the elderly customers’ histories, lessons they shared, and the legacies they lived. She appreciated their tales of triumph, heartbreak, and history.
“My mission is to help seniors enjoy the glitter of their golden years without feeling like they are burdening their families.” Rush was inspired to find a way to give back to the elderly generations, and so Rush Errands Senior Concierge Services was born this past March. Rush recalls one special drugstore customer who had lost his wife 15 years earlier. With no family in the area to assist him, he had to leave his home prematurely. It broke Rush’s heart to watch this happen to him without any way to intervene. She became determined to someday find a way she could help. “My mission is to help seniors enjoy the glitter of their golden years without feeling like they are burdening their families,” says Rush. “We aim
to keep seniors in their homes for as long as they like.” Compassion drives Rush’s philosophy for her business. Her genuine love and care for elderly adults speaks volumes, as she sustains the daily living of individuals not ready to go into a nursing or retirement home. Projecting that compassion into the community is her goal. Rush plans to donate baby dolls to Alzheimer’s patients in long-term care facilities around the Kansas City area. She is also annually involved with Strut with Your Mutt, volunteers at her children’s schools, and assists with Harvesters in her community. Rush graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and is a certified CPR specialist. She has worked in the KC metro for 15 years, and prior to her concierge business was in the dentistry and banking industries. She specializes in senior clients retaining their independence and enjoying life in their golden years, giving back to an aging generation. Rightfully so, she is living each day to the fullest, helping senior clients reclaim theirs.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...
THE BIG ONE WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI
July 17 is our 15th wedding anni-
versary—5,475 days of marriage. 5,475 days may not sound like a milestone. 1,000 days sounds important. Or maybe 5,000 or 10,000 days. 15 years, though, sounds like there should be a speech. It’s the big one. Out of 5,475 days, most days were good. And some days were not good—some were horrible. It’s hard to imagine what forever means when you’re a 22-year-old at the altar. Who gets married at 22 anyway? We did.
was trying to give me a heart attack. Day 667 and 1,755 were life-changing for both of us. But this article isn’t about becoming parents. Like babies growing up, it’s impossible to see the change in a marriage dayto-day. If you look at a photograph of us 15 years ago, you’ll see it. Now we have wrinkles around the eyes when we laugh. Scott doesn’t wear his wedding ring because he lost it. My hair color is silver around my face. We have sunspots on our faces.
I am not the wife of the year. I have never baked a turkey on Thanksgiving. I fake sleep so the kids will bother Scott in the mornings. I have been known to ask Scott to do something repeatedly—some call it nagging. I also scream. I yell. I answer with “Fine!”
We’re also closer. Our personalities changed over 15 years. Our feelings on marriage, kids, friends, work, music, and the definition of the perfect night out changed. You may not see that closeness in a photograph.
I do remember that day 5,469 sucked. Scott dragged me to a spinning class. I walked out convinced he
Scott and I were complete opposites when we married. I didn’t know we would have to overcome that. Two opposites may attract, but they won’t
last in a home if one is squeaky clean and craves attention and the other drags deer into the house and needs alone time in the woods. We didn’t know babies would leave us emotionally drained. We didn’t know marriage could become routine. Like any couple, we mastered the art of fighting. I know exactly what to say to raise his blood pressure. He knows nothing will bother me more than the silent treatment. But we always come back to each other. The beauty of 15 years is we know each other more than anyone else. We know what we like on our sandwiches. We read each other’s body language. Scott encourages me to write, even if it’s about him. And I live in a home with trophy deer on the walls. This the big one. 15 years. 5,475 days of marriage.

YOUR SUMMER GARDEN SURVIVAL GUIDE
WRITTEN BY JULIE ANTHONY BALMER
The dog days of summer are a critical time to focus on the care of your fruit and vegetable gardens so they don’t go to the dogs. At this time of year, most garden items already have been planted, so garden work shifts to maintenance mode. That means heavy watering, mulching, and fertilizing. “What we try to do is maintain everything and keep it alive during July and August, typically the hottest months of the year,” says Shelly Marsh, an avid gardener who started the website savvygardener.com in 2000. The site

provides local information on weather and other considerations important to Kansas City area gardeners.
Dennis Patton, a horticulture agent for Johnson County K-State Research and Extension.
Smart water
Weeds will rob the moisture and nutrients from plants if not managed properly. In addition, if weeds end up going to seed, you will have that many more weeds to deal with the following year. Patton suggests using something that breaks down easily for mulching, such as grass clippings or straw. Planning ahead and stockpiling those grass clippings now is key so there is enough to spread throughout the garden as needed.
Marsh recommends watering smart. This means watering deeply and thoroughly once or twice a week, providing plants with about an inch of water. Potted plants are a little bit different because there is a smaller mass of soil that will dry out more rapidly, requiring more frequent watering depending on the sun, shade, and the size of container. “Too often, people assume their irrigation system will do the job,” she says. “But in reality, less frequent but longer watering is more beneficial to the plants.”
Much mulch While watering is key, flowers and vegetables will produce best with even moisture. For more consistent moisture, gardening experts recommend mulching. “I’m a big fan of making sure the vegetable garden is mulched, which is the best way to control moisture, create an even temperature, and prevent weeds,” says
Preventing pests Both watering and mulching can help create healthier and stronger plants, which can better ward off pests and disease. While adding a pest-control spray to your prevention measures may be tempting, both Marsh and Patton suggest trying natural remedies first and to not expect a perfect, pest-free garden. “One thing to do is have a little tolerance and share that plant with nature just a little bit, as opposed to spray-
Fall gardening While most gardeners are focusing on their current gardens, it’s not too early to start thinking about the fall. “In the Kansas City area, we have a really wonderful fall growing season,” Patton shares. “Many of our spring crops, like lettuce, radishes, and broccoli, all can be grown again in the fall. July is the time you start planning that out, as many of these need to be planted in late July and early August.” Many people overlook fall gardening after losing interest in the summer heat. However, fall gardens tend to produce better harvests than spring crops because they grow and ripen under cooler temperatures. Whatever season you choose to garden, most gardeners agree there’s just something special about getting in the dirt and growing something literally from the ground up. “It’s about being outside, creating a beautiful landscape, and enjoying a therapeutic form of exercise,” Marsh notes. “It’s a passion.”
ing,” Patton explains. “By tolerance, I mean a small hole in the leaf is still fine; don’t strive for perfection.” Patton also doesn’t recommend spraying if you don’t know specifically what the pest is. The Johnson County K-State Research and Extension office has a gardening hotline available to answer questions about pests, as well as other gardening issues. Gardeners can call 913.715.7050, email garden.help@ jocogov.org, or visit johnson.ksu.edu. To prevent—or at least limit—pests of the animal variety such as rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks, there are several natural options as well. “A lot of old recipes really do work, such as spreading around dog or cat hair, cayenne pepper, and things like sweet gumballs from sweet gum trees,” Marsh says. “But whatever you do, be diligent about it because pests are really persistent.”
Deadheading & harvesting Much of the fruits of your gardening labor also appear in July. To keep flowers blooming, it’s important to deadhead them so they continue to bloom throughout the summer and into fall. Deadheading involves removing spent flowers either by hand or with scissors or pruners. For fruit and vegetable gardens, it’s important to stay on top of harvesting to help increase your overall yield and production. This is a key time of year for both tomato and pepper harvest. The more time and energy you spend picking your produce when it’s ready, the more your garden will produce in the end.

THE MADE CHEESEBURGER, IN THE USA WRITTEN BY LESLI LUNDQUIST / PHOTO BY CARMEN CARVER
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is just another ordinary cheeseburger. It quickly will become your new goto burger of the grilling season, as it has become in our house. But hold up, do you want even bigger, bolder flavor from this cheeseburger? Consider a different approach when purchasing the recipe ingredients—think “made in the USA.” Buy your beef and bacon from a local butcher. Shop the nearest farmer’s market for onion, thyme, and garlic. Pick up fresh-baked buns at a nearby bakery. To put it simply: Enjoy the burger and support your neighborhood.
