PUBLISHER’S NOTE
Oh, Those Summer Nights We are halfway through the summer! Are you surviving, parents? Or are you counting down the days until school starts? July is typically a great month to get away because swim teams and camps have slowed down—but this is not an ordinary summer. Our family usually looks forward to getting together with friends and celebrating the 4th of July with good food and fireworks. My kids always enjoy this. This 4th of July party will be a little different, though, as we adjust to COVID-19 restrictions and continue practicing social distancing. COVID-19 may have changed our lives in innumerable ways, but we won’t let it take away the joy and excitement that comes with summer and the 4th of July. In this issue, learn more about coronavirus-friendly summer hobbies like organic gardening (pg. 24) or preparing a summer party favorite, Indian maize salad (pg. 44). Stay cool, have fun, and enjoy these last few weeks of summer!

EMPOWERING GOOD WITH THE THREE SCARIEST WORDS WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON

JULY 2020
“You have cancer.” No one wants to hear those words. Stephanie Barr, a server at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill in Overland Park, knew those three words were coming when she was told to wait for the doctor after an ultrasound of a lump in her breast in 2010. Barr was only 30 years old.
A
fter the devastating news, the doctor said, “You’ll need a biopsy and you’ll need to figure out how you’re going to pay for it.” At the time, Barr didn’t have health insurance. She remembers, “They were trying to be sympathetic to me, but I had just been told I have cancer. I didn’t even have time to absorb it before they were telling me I had to figure out how to pay for it.” A program through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment called Early Detection Works was able to provide the costs of mammograms and biopsies. She then went through the arduous process of applying for Medicaid. “I qualified for Medicaid under a special Breast and Cervical Cancer Care Act,” Barr explains. “Women diagnosed are approved if their earnings are below the poverty level. I would have never have been able to afford treatments. I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t approved for Medicaid.” Kansas and Missouri are two of the most stringent states in the country when it comes to Medicaid eligibility. Medicaid serves the blind, disabled, pregnant, or impoverished caregivers of children. If you are a childless adult, there is no situation in which you qualify for Medicaid unless you are blind or disabled. For a family of three in Kansas, you have to make less than $9,000 a year in order for the parent to qualify. But Kansas and Missouri are working
hard for change. Medicaid expansion programs are in place in 36 states; Kansas and Missouri are some of the last few states to make change. Under the new Medicaid expansion program, adults making less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level (about $17,000 a year) can apply for Medicaid. Jordan Feuerborn is the Kansas Government Relations Director at the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network. She advocates for policy issues on the local, state, and federal level that pertain to the American Cancer Society. One of the biggest priorities she tackles is Medicaid expansion. “We know that people who are uninsured often delay preventative care and screenings, which means they tend to catch cancer later, and the treatment is harder. Outcomes tend not to be as positive,” Feuerborn says, “Medicaid expansion can provide relief. It allows people to have health insurance.” There are benefits outside of Medicaid expansion that many do not understand. Medicaid expansion provides access to health insurance for low-income individuals, but it also improves the workforce, improves the state economy, protects hospitals, and creates jobs. Emily Kalmer is the Missouri Government Relations Director at the American Cancer Society’s Missouri Cancer Action Network. “Medicaid gets people preventative care. Sometimes
that is forgotten when explaining Medicaid. People overlook the cost on the health care system with cancer and chronic diseases. Those costs can be lowered significantly with preventative care,” Kalmer explains. “We already know the impact from Medicaid expansion on things like cancer screenings. We know we get improved survival rates because we can compare expansion states with states like Kansas and Missouri.” One of the best ways to save lives is to make policy change. It starts with sharing stories with lawmakers—turning pain into action. Barr, now a cancer survivor, is an advocate for the American Cancer Society. “I guess I could say, ‘Hey, Medicaid worked for me, I don’t think it needs improvement,’” says Barr. “That’s not the case. I wish people could see the success story that I am. There’s a need for the expansion. Breast and cervical cancers are great causes to be approved for Medicaid, but I don’t think one cancer is more deserving than another.” She says that even if someone has diabetes, they should be able to have health care insurance. The statement “You have cancer” is a horrible thing to hear. But the words “You have cancer” are also empowering something good. For more information on how to support the Kansas and Missouri Medicaid expansion program, visit: Fightcancer.org/Kansas or Fightcancer.org/Missouri.

FIGHTING CHRONIC PAIN TAKES A TEAM EFFORT WRITTEN BY DAVID MARKS
It is said that into each life, some rain must fall. But at some point in our lives—especially as we get older—the chances increase that we’ll have to deal with something much more serious than a light precipitation.
patient who is experiencing pain in the back, neck, or limbs,” says Darren Lovick, MD, neurosurgeon, AdventHealth Medical Group Neurosurgery at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “This role can range from arranging physical therapy or simply changing expectations that a condition cannot be cured but can be managed effectively.”
In fact, according to the American Association of Neurosurgical Surgeons, nearly every adult in the U.S. will suffer from back and other nerve-related pain, including pulled muscles, degenerative disease, and trauma. As the spine ages, some people develop diagnoses such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis, in which case they will experience back, neck, or

extremity pain as well as symptoms such as arm or leg pain, weakness, or sciatica. The question is: what’s the best way to address these painful situations? For most people, the first step is to be seen by their primary care physician. “Whether the patient needs surgery or not, the primary care provider is an integral component in helping the
If the pain does not subside or has fluctuated for an extensive period of time, your primary care physician may refer you to a neurosurgeon. A neurosurgeon is a board-certified physician who specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating problems related to the nervous system. This includes the brain, spinal cord, spinal column, and the nerves that branch out from the spine—the peripheral nervous system. Of course, if someone is referred to a neurosurgeon, it’s only natural to assume they need an operation. Fortunately, that’s not the case. Most patients will benefit from non-surgical treatment, and appropriate referrals can be made to those specialists such as pain management.
Neurosurgeons evaluate and recommend treatment for a variety of conditions, including: • • • •
Cervical spine disorders Herniated disc Lumbar spinal stenosis Sciatica
Neurosurgeons are equipped with the latest technologies to diagnose, treat, and improve the lives of patients— from evaluating their health, medical history, and symptoms to diagnosing the issue and working with the patient to create a personalized treatment and recovery plan. “The goal is to determine the cause of the pain and what is the next best step in resolving it,” said Lovick. “We evaluate less invasive therapy options first.” While it can be difficult for a patient in severe pain to comprehend that they
will likely improve with time and physical therapy, most neurosurgeons will typically recommend 12 weeks of physical therapy before surgical treatment. If a patient fails physical therapy, or can’t perform physical therapy because of severe pain, a physician may recommend other non-operative measures like epidural steroid injections. This outpatient procedure can help blunt the pain by reducing the swelling around inflamed nerves. Often, a steroid injection can reduce pain enough for the patient to start a course of physical therapy. If a patient is still in pain or experiencing neurological symptoms after trying both physical therapy and injections, then it may be time to consider surgery. “For back and neck pain, surgery is often used to decompress a nerve that is causing pain radiating down an arm or
leg,” explains Lovick. Patients at AdventHealth work with a spine nurse navigator who helps guide them through the care process and works side-by-side with the primary care physician. “While a referral from a primary care physician may not be absolutely necessary, it’s always preferable,” says Lovick. “Good communication with the primary care provider results in the very best care.” At AdventHealth, we know it’s important to have a doctor, but we want to help you find the right doctor. Visit MyHealthKC.com, answer a few quick questions, and we’ll connect you with a primary care physician who best matches your health and wellness needs.

BUSINESS INSIDER
PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS
FOR THE MULTITASKING PROFESSIONAL WRITTEN BY JENNY KINCAID JULIAN / PHOTO BY JAMI MARSHALL
Every business professional wishes they had more time. And with millions of Americans now working from home and taking care of their children, this is even more true. Of course, we can’t create more time, but we can find ways to be more productive and do more in less time. And I have an app (or a few apps) for that.
1
Slack:
This messenger app centralizes real-time conversations across all devices, bringing your entire team’s communication into one place. Slack allows you to “pin” essential notifications, search previous conversations by keywords, notify people if you’re out of the office, and—best of all—it’s integrated with Google. Direct message an employee with sensitive information or create channels to handle conversations. Sign your clients up so you can have direct communication with them as well. I also use this to coordinate projects with people from other companies.
2
Pocket: Pocket is for unread
articles what Pinterest is for crafts. This save-it-for-later app allows you to keep stories you can’t get to and read or listen to them at a later date. It syncs across your phone, tablet, or computer, allowing you to come back to that article whenever it’s convenient for you, even when you’re offline. My favorite part is the “listen” button. After you pocket your unread article, listen to it while you’re driving, exercising, or having lunch. Free and paid versions are available.
3
LastPass:
Keeping track of passwords is difficult, especially with the number of online
accounts a person uses each week. LastPass is a freemium password management service that stores all of your usernames and passwords in one private account. You only have to remember one password, not 20. Your personal vault is encrypted, so even LastPass employees can’t see your sensitive information. Once you open your vault, you can see your saved data on one page. You can even have it prompt you to store your password each time you log into a new account.
4
Google Drive:
If you’re not using this yet, get it now! Home to Google Docs and a full suite of productivity applications, templates, workday no-brainers, and more, Google Drive allows all-team collaborative editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and much more. For those who share tasks with team members, having multiple users simultaneously edit a file saves time. Upload, create, and share files, store photos, and organize your business’s (or your family’s) information into this easily accessible platform. You can even decide who has access to the data and who doesn’t. All of the Google Drive products sync across hundreds of apps you’re probably already using as well as all devices to allow for immediate updates.
5
Feedly:
Keeping your favorite news sources in one location can be difficult. It is even more difficult when you look at multiple industries per day to keep tabs on each of your client’s specialties. Feedly is a news-aggregation service that connects you to the information you need to stay ahead. Customize your content dashboard with your favorite blogs and online news sources, and put them into categories such as banking, public relations, lifestyle, or food. Create a storyboard, save an article for later, put it in your Pocket, or send it out to one of your social media channels. This app integrates with Buffer, Evernote, Messenger, and more, and is an excellent tool for social media managers. — There are many more helpful apps I use both personally and professionally. A few that didn’t make the list are Canva for free or inexpensive designs (it’s a must-have), Hootsuite to schedule and monitor all of your social media channels, Strava! to track your walk/run distance, Audible to listen to audiobooks, and Everlance to track mileage.

GET TO KNOW YOUR BODY WITH DEXAFIT KANSAS CITY WRITTEN BY TE CUNNINGHAM / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
DexaFit owner Jayme Gray was originally a client of DexaFit. “After I had my last baby, I noticed my body changing,” she explains. “I was searching for ways to measure beyond using calipers, as I am not a fan of that type of measurement tool. My search landed me at the DexaFit doors, and I have never looked back.” In fact, she was so enamored with the DexaFit process she decided to take the leap and open her own franchise, founding DexaFit Kansas City in January of 2019. DexaFit Kansas City can help you get to know your body in an entirely different way, and Gray is there to make sure you meet your goals. Instead of using calipers, Gray says one of the

most accurate ways to measure body composition is actually a DXA scan. For those unfamiliar with calipers, the device pinches the back of your arms (and other locations on the body) to measure body fat.
What is DXA (or DEXA)? DXA scanners have been around for decades, but they are more known for measuring bone density
for at-risk women. These scanners use low-dose radiation to measure an individual’s body composition. Once testing is complete, the client receives a four-page report that includes results for body fat, lean tissue, and bone mineral density. This detailed report serves as a baseline for the client to measure the improvement in their fitness.
The information included in the scan will assist in deciding what to eat and how to train. Clients can better understand how effective their training is and how their bodies react. A scan every three to six months measures improvement and allows for adjustments. “I started a new fitness regimen in January with the goal of cutting my body fat percentage 2 percent by 2021. My monthly visits to DexaFit have given me such detailed data that staying motivated has been a breeze,” says client Jason Kander. “Just a few months later, I’ve already exceeded my goal and set a new one. The accuracy and consistency of DXA scans have been a game-changer for me!” Gray observes, “As people age, they tend to become more sedentary—from desk jobs to less activity. This causes individuals to lose both bone density and muscle. And often, we gain fat from hormonal changes.”
“I started a new fitness regimen in January with the goal of cutting my body fat 2 percent by 2021. My monthly visits to DexaFit have given me such detailed data that staying motivated has been a breeze.” She says DexaFit’s client base includes many athletes, but they also see people who just want to figure out how to fight this natural aging process, get rid of unwanted fat, and feel good. Visceral fat is stored within the abdominal cavity and is located near several vital organs, including the liver, stomach,

Dexafit also measures Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) for caloric needs. RMR uses indirect calorimetry to measure your caloric needs while at rest. This tells you how many calories you typically burn in a 24-hour period, which is very useful in setting your personal fitness and dietary guidelines. You can extrapolate how many calories you consume, how to increase physical activity to burn calories, and more.

WHAT, WHERE
Meet Jennifer Lapka Who: What: Where:
Creative Jennifer Lapka is a nonprofit specialist and champion of our fashion and arts communities. She founded Rightfully Sewn, an organization creating jobs and opportunity through the business of fashion. Rightfully Sewn provides seamstress training for individuals so they can thrive in a specialized workforce that will reestablish Kansas City as an epicenter of garment manufacturing, propelling Kansas City fashion designers to market so they can supply the demand for high quality, American-produced garments. Lapka’s career includes stops at institutions in London and Gateshead, England, and Kansas City, including: BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and Victoria & Albert Museum.
FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE There are so many lovely restaurants that it’s hard to pick! During quarantine, I have really been missing The Antler Room. I think the world of Leslie Newsam Goellner, and between her and Nicholas Goellner’s career stops in heralded restaurants in Kansas City, New York, San Francisco, and Denmark, I can feel and taste their unique life experiences every time I visit.
FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK Unbakery and Juicery! Robin Krause’s juices are gorgeous
and delicious, and her team is so delightful, creative, and kind. The light that pours into their snug A-frame space and its healthy plants and bright pillows make it an enjoyable place to spend time.
FAVORITE SHOPPING As a champion of Kansas City-based fashion and jewelry designers, I love to shop directly from their studios, runway shows, websites, and social feeds. To name a handful of my favorites: Sarah Nelsen, Nina Littrell, Paulina Otero, and Sierra Winter.
FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS Although it’s been there for years, it still feels like a hidden gem: Fervere, the little bread shop in Westside. I love its quaint exterior, friendly staff, and yummy baked goods. It reminds me of village shops in Europe, which is comforting. I also love the California-cool, health-meets-beauty mecca in Prairie Village, WELWYTHN, owned by Gina Ciaccio-Holmberg. She has a hair treatment containing Palo Santo oil that smells like magic!
FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. I love its size, focus on art made since the 20th century, well-curated temporary exhibitions, and the late Latvian architect Gunnar Birkert’s modernist aesthetic. It’s always an extra special visit for me as my first full-time job was there when I moved to Kansas City. My tenure coincided with some amazing women I was deeply inspired by: Dawn Taylor, the late and great chef Jennifer Maloney, Rachael Blackburn Cozad, and Kristy Peterson. I reminisce and talk about all of these amazing elements when I take visitors there.

GARDEN
IS IT TIME TO GO ORGANIC WITH YOUR GARDEN AND LAWN CARE? WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER
Visit any grocery store in Kansas City and you’ll likely see a bountiful produce section. No matter the time of year, there will be bananas, oranges, kiwi, kale, cucumbers, tomatoes, and more, all for sale at a reasonable price. Modern farming is largely responsible for the variety and affordability of this cornucopia of fruits and vegetables. But stories about red tide in the Gulf of Mexico due to over-fertilization, weakened immune systems from pesticide residuals that damage our gut microbiome, and other negative side effects of industrial farming have many of us thinking twice

about how we grow our food, and even our own lawns. Jonah Nelson, location manager at Family Tree Nursery in Overland Park, has been growing an organic garden for almost a decade, and he and his wife and kids reap many benefits. “We feel great. Plus, it’s about as fresh as you can get, and fresher generally equals tastier,” he says. This doesn’t mean there aren’t any downsides. With organic gardening, you’re giving up a little bit in terms of yield, Nelson explains. You’ll also most likely find blemishes and other imperfections you’re not used to seeing on your food.
If you are considering going organic, you can stop by Family Tree Nursery for a “taste test” of sorts: The location off Farley St. in Overland Park offers a summer market in July and August, selling some of the organic produce grown there.
Weed/Insect Prevention Herbicides (weed killers), pesticides (pest killers), and insecticides (a specific pesticide used to kill insects) are all things to consider for a healthy garden. When it comes to going organic, Nelson says that organic insect control is the most popular choice. Whichev-
er organic product you choose, it’s still important to follow the instructions on the label. “People will go out of their way to go organic, but these products can be harmful to the environment if not applied correctly,” he says. “And you still have to rinse off your fruits and veggies before eating. Copper is a natural choice, but you don’t want to eat a lot of it.” The most environmentally harmful choice for weed/insect prevention is synthetic pesticides. “This is because of the effect it has on so many living things,” Nelson says. “You have to ask yourself at what point are bugs a problem, because they’re as natural as plants.” When it comes to getting rid of weeds, selective herbicides are a better choice than non-selective ones (like Roundup). Selective herbicides won’t kill your grass but will kill weeds—at least for some amount of time. “People also use vinegar, but it’s the
same result: the leaves get burned off, but the roots remain intact, so the weeds come back,” Nelson says. He adds that the best way to be an organic farmer is about as old as farming itself: invest in a garden hoe. There is another option for preventing weeds in your lawn, but it takes commitment. Corn gluten applied to the lawn will work, but only after three or four years. It can’t be used for gardens because it’s rendered ineffective when the soil layer is broken.
Fertilization When it comes to organic fertilizer, Native Americans had a solution: they’d throw fish on the soil to provide nutrients and amino acids. Fish fertilizer is still in use today. Another popular organic choice is chicken manure. You might be catching on to one of the drawbacks of organic fertilizers. “It’s going to stink,” Nelson says. “If you’re picturing yourself sitting on your patio
enjoying a cocktail on a nice summer night, consider what you’re using on your garden.” The good news is, chicken manure won’t have an unpleasant odor when used correctly. It results in healthy soil— not just healthy plants—because when the microbes that eat it die off, lots of good nutrients build up in the soil. Synthetic fertilizers work faster and last longer, but the fact that they last longer is bad for the environment. This is largely due to farm runoff containing nitrogen and phosphorus. Nelson’s advice: No matter which products you’re using, always read and follow the label. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. “Work with the rhythms of nature,” he adds. “Plant what does well here—things like tomatoes, potatoes, onions, and broccoli. They’ll be more naturally diseaseresistant and you’ll get better results.”

WELCOME HOME A
CONVERSATION WITH CINDY BAUMANN OF SLEEK PHYSIQUE WRITTEN BY BY SIMPLYKC STAFF PHOTO (THIS PAGE) BY JAMI MARSHALL
SIMPLYkc: You
requested a Q&A format for your article. This is an interesting change of pace.
Cindy K. Baumann:
It was inspired by a competitor who sent over a spy to find out why I moved back. It was a lot of effort, considering a simple “Welcome home! What brings you back?” phone call would have sufficed. So, for the benefit of anybody else from my past who is wondering, I’ll tell all here!
SKC:
So, what have you been doing since 2010?
CKB: Cindy Baumann, owner of Sleek Physique
SIMPLYkc Magazine sat down for a one-on-one with Endermologie practitioner Cindy Baumann, owner of Sleek Physique. Baumann practiced Endermologie—a high-end anti-aging spa treatment to reduce cellulite—in the KC-area from 2005-2010, before marrying and moving to Tucson, Arizona. A year ago, Baumann returned to her old “digs” within The Swanson Center.

I moved to Tucson when I got married, but that marriage ended as soon as it began. Rather than come back to Leawood to pick up where I left off, though, I decided to stay in Tucson because I loved the terrain and climate. I’d deepened my old passion for ballroom dancing, and had developed a new passion for hiking. I even dabbled in spelunking and rock climbing for a short time. In 2017 I moved my business to Phoenix; the vibe there is a
better fit for me than Tucson. In 2019 I moved my business back to KC to be near my family. I felt that Leawood would be a better market than Arizona, and it is.

SKC:
Could you briefly explain Endermologie?
CKB:
“A handful of my clients even emailed me over the years, asking me to consider moving back.” SKC:
Were you surprised that Leawood is a better market than Arizona?
CKB: No, but only because I’d served it before. I was surprised that Arizona wasn’t as strong as Leawood. When I headed west 10 years ago, I thought I was going to have a year-round revolving door of business. After all, it’s warm and sunny all year out there! What I quickly learned is that Midwesterners and Southwesterners define “warm” differently, so I had the same winter slump in Arizona that I do here. I also found that Leawood is younger, more affluent, and less transient than Arizona—hence, more likely to have the interest and means to pursue anti-aging remedies.
SKC:
Are you picking up where you left off in 2010?
CKB:
No! While I’m honored and humbled that so many of my former clients have returned (a handful even emailed me several times over the years, asking me to consider moving

How long does a treatment
take?
CKB: It takes about 35-45 minutes—a good, relaxing, lunch-time procedure. Many drift off to sleep during treatment. There’s no downtime and you won’t get all messy or sweaty or limp away in pain.
SKC:
How much do you charge for treatments?
CKB: About the same price as a massage, anywhere from $60 to $79 per treatment, depending on whether you buy a package, membership, or à la carte treatments.

MODERN DINING
HOW SOME OF KC’S FAVORITE RESTAURANTS ARE ADAPTING TO THE NEW NORMAL WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY MEREDITH SCHULTE
A
lan Gaylin is not a native of Kansas City—he’s from Houston, Texas. But he is the mastermind, alongside Glynn and Jean Roberts, behind some well-known culinary hotspots in Kansas City that have made a “Texas-sized” name for themselves: Gram & Dun, Stock Hill, Urban Table, Happy Belly Food Truck, Bread & Butter Concepts Catering, and Cherry Hall (an event space in the Crossroads). Created in 2009, the goal of Bread & Butter Concepts was to become a regional restaurant based in the Midwest. The owners believed the market was ready for creative, culinary-driven con-

cepts. They built the company the old-fashioned way—through hard work, forward thinking, and genuine passion for excellent food, libations, and hospitality. But just like for other restaurants, 2020 has redefined normal for Bread & Butter Concepts. Gaylin explains how adapting to the new normal has changed the entire industry.
COVID-19 is on everyone’s minds. What were the changes you made in your restaurants? Like everyone else, we had to reconfigure the entire restaurant to meet the seating guidelines.
In re-opening, we reduced hours, simplified menus for staffing and purchasing, and developed QR hands-free menus and checks. We also developed strict cleaning and disinfecting lists for employees. The managers’ responsibilities have changed significantly, as they have become more handson in order to make staffing and costs work.
Where do you see the food and drink industry moving in the future? I am not sure anyone really knows the answer to that yet, but my opinion is it will be quite a while before we see the upper casual to
fine dining category fully recoup. I believe new restaurants will be much smaller in space and seating, and patios will become more popular as they are utilized in more creative ways. Curbside, to-go, and drive-through will certainly be used more by consumers. Upscale restaurants will be a challenge with all of the extra costs involved. More importantly, that business consists of entertainment and business travel. Corporate travel and expense accounts will change dramatically, and that is a huge part of business for that sector. We have to build customer confidence and hopefully slowly work back to a profitable place. Alan Gaylin, Founder & CEO of Bread & Butter Concepts
What are a few good summer dishes & drinks we should try?
On the Gram & Dun patio: Smoking Dun’s and “D Cups” with Pig Wings, Not-So-Standard Potato Chips, Pork Steamed Buns, and French Onion Dumplings. And at home, my favorite is smoked pork shoulder and ribs, Carolina slaw, and good ol’ simple onion dip and Fritos. For drinks: special margaritas and palomas.
What is your favorite thing about Kansas City? I am from Texas, and I thought Texas was a friendly place. Kansas City is all about the people, though. Midwesterners have great values and are caring folks, always wishing everyone the best. My employees are very dedicated—like no other place I have been.

PARENTING
EMPTY NEST
AN END WITH A NEW BEGINNING WRITTEN BY SUZANNE LAMMERS
W
hether your kids are in kindergarten or high school, the thought of becoming an empty nester someday has probably crossed your mind. And if your youngest just graduated and you’re currently facing this new reality, you might be asking “What’s next?” It’s a given that day-to-day life as you know it changes when you become an empty nester. According to Caryn Hess, a licensed professional counselor in Overland Park, the sooner you start preparing yourself, the better. “Raising children goes by so quickly that it’s easy to have a false sense of security it will last forever. Once your kids enter high school, it’s a good time to reflect and think about what’s next,” says Hess. What would you like to do? What do you want to accomplish? What is the next chapter when you’re done raising kids? These are all good questions to
32
|
SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE
|
JULY 2020
consider. Hess also stresses the importance of having a sense of purpose that has a positive impact on others or society. “By the time our kids are ready to leave home, we have a much better idea of who we are, what we like, and what we want than we did in our twenties,” says Hess. “It’s a good time to take care of yourself and do things you put on the backburner. If you’re married, perhaps it’s time to recapture the romance and reignite your relationship with your spouse. We often get so involved with our kids that we let those things go by the wayside.” Allison Ewert and her husband Kurt raised three kids and became empty nesters at the age of 50 when Matt, their youngest, left for Kansas State University in 2017. Their eldest daughter Emily, 26, recently graduated from the physician assistant program at University of Missouri—Kansas City, and Abby, 23, earned her bachelor of
science degree at Kansas State University and is working at Americorps. “I thought I’d be lost not watching Matt play soccer, seeing the other parents, and having a full, happy house. But it was weird how everything was actually okay,” says Ewert. “As parents, we have it so good now. I remember having to wait by the phone every Saturday for my mom to call. I can call or text and connect with my kids whenever I want. I thought it was going to be sad and lonely, but it’s allowed more time for Kurt and me to enjoy each other’s company.” Since Kurt retired six months after Matt left for college, the couple has spent more time together at home and abroad. “We’ll do happy hour together, eat dinner, go for a boat ride with our dog Lucy, and then watch a show. We have our own routine now. Plus, we plan more vacations and have traveled to places we wouldn’t have when our kids were younger. When they were young, I didn’t want to be away more than a few days,” shares Ewert, noting recent destinations
include Cuba, Patagonia, and Peru. Like many empty nesters, the Ewerts downsized their permanent home and purchased a nearby lake house so their kids could visit and enjoy it too. Allison credits their dog Lucy for helping ease the transition as well. “It’s funny how the dog has played a part. Since all the kids left, Lucy has become our kid. Instead of buying Oreos for Matt, I buy treats for Lucy,” she laughs. In January they added a puppy named Murphy, who they call their second child. Seeing your last child go off to college can be an emotional time. Hess says to remember that grief is a normal reaction to any loss, and becoming an empty nester is a loss of life as you knew it. “There is a loss, but at the same time you gain something great as your child moves through each stage of life. Your kids still need you, but in a different way,” says Hess. “Your relationship keeps changing, but there’s still plenty to look forward to in the future.”
In Ewert’s experience, the best part about being an empty nester is the relationship with her adult kids. “It’s awesome to go to your daughter’s house for Mother’s Day and see the table set the way you used to do it. You realize the things you taught them are part of who they are.” Having your own lives outside of the kids, staying connected with friends, volunteering, and having hobbies that you enjoy can also make the transition easier. “The biggest misconception is that it’s this big ending, when it’s actually a new beginning,” says Hess. “This time of life can be very exciting and liberating.”

FINANCE
BUDGETING AWAY YOUR CORONAVIRUS WORRIES WRITTEN BY BRENNAN HALLOCK
T
his summer seems to mostly involve reminiscing about pre-coronavirus days—days when international vacations were still part of the summer schedule, when you had summer camps to send your kids to, and when your money magically budgeted itself. Okay, your money has never magically budgeted itself, but recent events have probably made you more aware of your spending/income. Ask any financial nerd and they’ll tell you that budgeting is one of the simplest financial tools. But for some reason, it seems to be one of the most challenging to use effectively. This is because budgeting is a habit. In order to build that habit, though, the first step is picking a budgeting strategy, and there are strategies of all sizes.
The 3-category budget This simple budgeting method helps you keep your spending under control without tracking where every penny is going. Many people only struggle with
34

SIMPLYkc MAGAZINE
|
JULY 2020
spending in a few budgeting categories. For example, many overspend in categories such as eating out, entertainment, or shopping. If you look through your spending for the past few months and find the three categories you struggle with, you can then budget those and disregard the rest. What to consider: If you struggle with substantial overspending, you are probably struggling with more than three categories. This budgeting method works for people who would like to give their spending a touch-up, but if your budget needs a deep clean, try another method.
Cash-based budget For those of you who need rigid guidelines, this will be your best budgeting strategy. Also known as “envelope budgeting,” this involves using a physical envelope for each budget category, then each month withdrawing in cash the amount for the category. Place the cash in the envelope, cut up your credit card, and only use the
cash for your spending. If you run out of money in your gas category before the end of the month but still need to buy gas, physically move money from another category to make up the difference.
ing updates and reassessments, but will not be nearly as intensive as a monthly budget. It also requires an app that tracks your spending, such as Personal Capital or Mint.
What to consider: The rigidity can reduce your ability to be as spontaneous or spend as much time with some friends. Also, carrying around large amounts of cash can be disconcerting. There are electronic versions of this budgeting method as well, though. You Need A Budget (YNAB) is an app that uses it. An Excel spreadsheet can do the job too.
What to consider: It can be difficult to accurately project spending for a 12-month period. You could change it to a 6-month period (or even a quarter system) to help with this. For zero-based budgeting, it gives you complete control of your money, but it involves “micromanaging” your money.
Zero-based yearly budgeting
This plan is popular for its simplicity. 50 percent of your income goes to necessities (gas, groceries, mortgage), 20 percent goes to long-term savings (IRA, emergency fund, college fund), and 30 percent to lifestyle spending (shopping, entertainment, travel). If you have a hard time deciding how much should be spent on specific budget categories, this can make that decision easier.
This budget involves giving every dollar a job. You must decide how every dollar that enters your bank account will be spent (or saved). Using a spreadsheet, you can create a category for each budget, designating where every dollar will go. Then decide how much you will spend over a 12-month period. Put in how much you expect to earn and make sure the spending (plus saving) does not exceed the income. This requires ongo-

starting point for someone unfamiliar with budgeting, but it does allow spending categories to be higher than they should be without being noticed. For example, you may consistently struggle to keep the “necessity” portion of your spending under control but not know why.
The “No Budget” budget Finally, if you really hate budgeting but need something to keep your money under control, you can use this method. It’s as simple a method as there is: just pay attention to your bank account balance. If your balance went up this past month, you’re on track. If it went down, cut back on spending. What to consider: If you typically spend within your income, this can work for you. But if you are prone to overspending, it won’t work. If you overspend, you need to determine the specifics of your overspending and change your habits. This method can also make long-term goals (such as savings and retirement) challenging.

PUT YOUR HEALTH FIRST AT MIDWEST MYOFASCIAL RELEASE CENTER WRITTEN BY SOPHIE OSWALD / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL
Jan Kelly opened Midwest Myofascial Release Center to help people connect with themselves and understand how the body, mind, and spirit play a role in a person’s well-being. If you are in pain and have exhausted the traditional routes in the healing process, the experienced team at the center may be your best option to get to the bottom of your ailments and support you as you restore your body and enjoy your life again. Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe and effective technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure on pain-sensitive areas within your connective tissue. The pressure applied during MFR elongates the fascia, improving circulation. Additionally, this process eliminates pain and restores motion to the body. MFR falls somewhere between re-

“They don’t merely treat symptoms; they determine the cause & leave you with positive long-term results.”
Everyone who works at Midwest MFR Center has trained under the John Barnes Myofascial Release technique. Barnes incorporates the mind-body connection in his teachings, and the team at Midwest MFR Center do as well. Each practitioner has a different background, such as occupational therapy or athletic training. Additionally they have had their own challenges, ranging from physical injuries to emotional injuries. “We’ve been drawn to this from our own personal need to heal something within ourselves,” says Kelly. “We all see the body differently, and people are going to connect to different things.”
through their education process. The staff understands how to help clients heal and become self-aware. They teach you the correct posture and movement so you aren’t harming your body. Each client receives a program tailored to help them with their needs. The staff will help you train your brain so you experience life in the best possible way.
Teala Danyel is a customer of Midwest MFR Center, and she explains that she had a myofascial massage with Kelly. “She had wonderful energy,” says Danyel. “She explained the whole process to me and what she was doing and why. This made me feel comfortable, and I enjoyed the entire massage. I also had a few reiki sessions with Lauren, which was a very enjoyable experience.”
While MFR is at the center of the business and what they do, there are many other services offered as well. They have FAR Infrared Sauna sessions, therapeutic massages, scar tissue release, and juice cleanses to assist the body in detoxing. Their additional services release restrictions to further assist the body in breaking the cycle of pain. James Brown, a long-time client, says he wishes he could go to Midwest MFR Center more often. “As a self-employed residential contractor, I frequently have sore and tight muscles that a standard masseuse doesn’t even come close to getting worked out,” he explains. Clients truly matter to the staff and they have gone above and beyond to make sure their clients are safe. They have a specific cleaning process and a system in place that makes sure people don’t come in contact with each other because of COVID-19. Now is the perfect time to start putting yourself first and learning how to truly take care of your body. Connect with the team at Midwest MFR Center and learn how the body, mind, and spirit play a role in your well-being.

KACIE A VACATION BUGABOO
I’ve recently made a few new friends. They are my high school daughter’s friends’ parents, and we’ve become close. They are planning a cruise including us and the girls since the prices are so cheap. Because of COVID-19, I’m uncomfortable going on a cruise. I don’t want to be the only parent who says no, and I don’t want my daughter to miss out. What do I do?
Hold on, let me find my umbrella straw. Oay, vacations should be enjoyable. It sounds like you get along with your daughter’s friends’ parents, so a vacation with them could be a wonderful opportunity to bond. But bottom line—it’s your money and your health. Have you voiced your concern with these parents? I assume no since they’re “new” friends. You could bring it up and tell them you’re not comfortable. Odds are, other parents are uncomfortable too. If they are set on a cruise, you could offer an alternative, such as meeting them in Key West on one of their cruise stops. Take the opportunity to do a mother-daughter vacation as well as meeting up with your friends. Or maybe COVID-19 will come roaring back and solve the problem for you. Either way, get yourself an umbrella straw. It makes summer so much better.
If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...
BETTER THAN THE SUMMER OF 2020 WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI
It’s not a normal summer. The kids have been out of school and keeping their distance from others since March. March! That’s like 10 years ago. Pools are deserted. Family vacations are canceled. Parents are working from home. It’s hot. Okay, I guess that’s normal. I miss getting on a plane and going somewhere equally as hot but with a sea breeze and other people’s screaming kids. I even miss the planning, packing, and mass hysteria that comes before leaving on a family vacation. And then Facebook Memories came swooping in with the tale of rum on the high seas.
Julie’s Facebook Memory: July 2, 2017 Pro: We’re ready to blow stuff up with fireworks.
42
Pro: It’s an unfinished basement. We haven’t had rain. How bad can it be?
Con: I keep stepping on these un-popped poppers the kids left in the driveway with bare feet. The neighbors’ kids have heard every 4-letter word from my house.
Con: It’s to my ankles. Our rugs and carpet remnants are soaked, moldy, and need to go to the dumpster.
Pro: We only get 18 summers with our kids. Let them have fun.
Pro: The kids’ toys in the basement are soaked, moldy, and need to go to the dumpster.
Con: “Mom, the basement is flooded.”
Con: My husband’s response: “I’m at the gym. Call one of your girlfriends or something.”

Pro: I get the bed to myself tonight. Con: Every service man took today off and is not answering their phone. It’s a holiday. Notice I said man. Pro: It’s a holiday. Con: We leave for vacation in one day. Pro: We leave for vacation in one day.
Pro: I hustled up the stairs carrying five rolls of carpet to lay out on the driveway. Con: I’m not smart enough to know if the carpet is ruined even when dried out. AND THOSE POPPERS ARE STILL BURNING MY FEET. WHERE ARE THOSE !%@#ING KIDS! Pro: I’m cursing like a sailor because I drink rum now.
Con: I’m rage cleaning the stuff my kids destroyed in the basement.
Con: My dad called and asked if we needed help. I said, “Dad, I really don’t care anymore. I found a box full of rum labeled ‘Man cave.’ I’ve had it.”
Pro: I opened a box labeled “man cave” from our old house. The box contained a 1.75 liter bottle of Fireball, Malibu rum, and Bacardi rum.
Pro: My dad laughed.
Con: I’m not huge fan of rum. Pro: And then God said, “Drink the rum, Julie. I’m sorry you’re going through this. You’re going to be a pirate on the high seas in one day. Treat yo’ self!” Con: I’m drunk.
Con: My dad is on his way. Pro: You think the forefathers said, “Cheers, Britain! Getcho red coats back on the high seas! We’ll keep the rum?” I like to think they did. Con: We have a 6 a.m. flight tomorrow. ______ Pro: That was better than the summer of 2020.

BRIGHTEN YOUR SUMMER WITH THIS FAMILY FAVORITE WRITTEN BY GINA REARDON / PHOTO BY ADRIENNE MAPLES
There’s nothing my family enjoys more during the summer months than dining outdoors, soaking up the familiar and comforting sounds of our neighborhood. This includes listening to voices of the triplets playing across the street, the hypnotic musical stylings of our next-door neighbors, and the snippets of conversation from all the passersby. The Weber kettle grill is worth its weight in gold, and we feast on summer produce, crisp salads, and fruit or frozen desserts. This fresh corn salad is a colorful complement to everything, from chicken, burgers, brisket, and steak to salmon, shrimp, and a tomato-ripe BLT!
Indian Maize Salad Serves 8

To roast the corn, wrap clean ears in aluminum

a 400-degree oven. Bake for 20 minutes, turning several times. Cut kernels off the cob. For the salad, mix the corn with the diced peppers and onions, lime juice, vinegar, oil, cilantro, maple syrup, and salt. Chill before serving.

APP OF THE MONTH
BAMBINO: TAP FOR A BABYSITTER
The gist: Safety is a big concern
right now—from background checks to COVID-19. There are many reasons you could be wary of a babysitting app, but Bambino has thought of it all. Bambino is an app that hosts a community of local sitters who are recommended by your friends and neighbors. The app is geared toward parents looking for sitters and for sitters looking to establish themselves.
ist, and criminal databases to ensure they are not a risk. Every sitter has to be recommended, and those recommendations come from local users who have logged onto Facebook. Sitters are sorted by distance from the parent. If there isn’t a sitter your friends have hired and recommended, Bambino shows you sitters your neighbors have used and sorts them by distance from you.
Bambino is different from other babysitting services in that they bring everything to a local level. Community managers recruit talented, top sitters, communicate with parents, answer questions, host events, and serve as the touchpoint for the local Bambino community. Kristal Ronnebaum, community manager for families in the South Johnson County area, says, “It’s community connections like this that make us stronger together.”
Parents can easily pay the sitter through the app and sitters can set their own rates. For Junior sitters, there will be a $1.95 booking fee and for Standard, Advanced, and Elite sitters, there will be a $2.95 fee applied at the end of the booking. Both parents and sitters registered on the app will receive their own “refer-a-friend” link to share with others. Once the first booking is complete, both parties receive a $10 thank you.
The app provides several features that help validate sitters. The process checks them against fraud, terror-

ORGANIZATIONAL TASKS TO ADD TO YOUR DAY
1 Write a To-Do List:
Lining up what you need to get done for the day means nothing gets “forgotten”... even if you feel like forgetting about it until tomorrow! Hold yourself accountable one bullet point at a time.
2 Make Your Bed:
Not at night. Not before a virtual meeting. Every morning—and do it as soon as you wake up. Start out your day on a tidy foot by cleaning up the coziest spot in your house! You’ll feel refreshed just looking at it.
3 Do the Dishes: Resist the urge to let dishes air dry for
more than 24 hours, and tackle the previous meal’s stack before a handful of plates and pans becomes a mountain of dishes.
4 Fold and Fluff: Is the act of folding blankets and fluff-
ing pillows actually cathartic, or is this just the easiest organizational hack out there? Either way, in under 5 minutes your living room could be the cleanest area of the house.

5 Dust It Off:
The best way to keep dust at bay? Every morning, use a reusable dust rag to wipe down surfaces that gather dust fast. (Your allergies will thank you!)
6 Clean Out the Fridge:
This may sound like a weekly task at best, but with summer comes an excess of fresh fruit— and faster spoils for those with busy schedules. Once a day, check out what may be hiding (or growing!) inside.
7 Digital Detox:
Digital clutter weighing you down? Take a few minutes to delete old pictures or screenshots, clear out your Notes app, or clean off your desktop.
