PUBLISHER’S NOTE

While most kids are excitedly getting ready to go back to school, there are some children who won’t be walking into school to reunite with classmates. Instead of shopping for school supplies and choosing their first-day outfits, children who have been diagnosed with cancer are dealing with treatment plans, surgeries, shots, and hospital stays. For those children, the local chapter of a national nonprofit called Bags of Fun offers an escape from their sickness through games and toys. Bags of Fun is the signature project of the Gabby Krause Foundation started by Gabby’s mother, Tammy Krause, to honor her daughter. Gabby passed away in September 2004 after a 19-month battle with brain cancer. During her hospital visits, Gabby always had a “bag of fun” with her, and she shared the toys and games with other patients at the hospital. Before Gabby passed away, she wished every child could have their own bag of fun. Today, the nonprofit has delivered more than 9,000 bags to sick children across the nation. It’s easy to get so tied up in our own schedules and lives that we forget there are children who aren’t fortunate enough to be able to do such simple things like going to school and playing with friends. But there’s no better time than the start of the school year to involve your children in giving back to those in need. The Bags of Fun program exists to bring joy, laughter, and relief to every child fighting a life-threatening disease or condition. You can learn more about Bags of Fun—and all the ways you can help—in our Charity Spotlight on page 42. Here’s to the start of a great new school year!

WHAT, WHERE Meet Emily Farris

Who: What:

EMILY FARRIS She’s one of Kansas City’s queens of Instagram. The Boozy Bungalow is where Emily Farris shares her DIY adventures of her 103-year-old East Brookside bungalow along with amazing cocktail recipes and sassy captions. It’s in this niche where Farris writes for Bon Appetit, Epicurious, Food & Wine, Food 52, The Cut, Lifehacker, and more. Her brand content work includes Food Network, HGTV, Home Depot, Starbucks, and KitchenAid. Farris’ new endeavor is called Caption Camp where she teaches social media writing 101 to businesses looking for help. She has over 10 years of experience creating content and managing social media. You can find her entertaining column in Spaces Magazine and her Instagram page is @theboozybungalow. Learn more about Caption Camp at captioncamp.com.

Where:

FAVORITE PLACE TO DINE There are too many to list here, but let’s just say when I was pregnant, I sometimes ate the Masala Paneer at Chai Shai twice a day. I also can’t get enough of The Antler Room, ABC Cafe, The Rieger, and Waldo Thai.

FAVORITE PLACE TO DRINK My house, of course! There’s a reason it’s called The Boozy Bun-

galow. Honestly, though, with a toddler, we don’t get out much anymore (lame, I know!). When we do manage to get a sitter and want good drinks, we end up at Julep Cocktail Club, Harry’s Bar & Tables, or even Manifesto if we’re feeling fancy and manage to actually plan ahead.

FAVORITE SHOPPING All the thrift stores! I have a thing for vintage glassware, and I already have way too much of it, but that doesn’t stop me from hitting up City Thrift and Red Racks on Wornall on an almost weekly basis. The rest of the time, you can find me at Soil Service Center buying yet another houseplant or at Sutherland’s buying supplies for my endless old-house to-do list.

FAVORITE HIDDEN GEMS Blush Nail Lounge on East 63rd Street. I won’t go anywhere else. It’s the cleanest, nicest, friendliest nail salon in the city. As far as restaurants, Café Provence. I know it’s not exactly hidden, but it’s not a place people my age often consider. I spend way too much of my income dining out, and I can say with some degree of self-proclaimed authority that it’s the most consistent fine dining in the metro. For shopping: Cargo Largo in Independence. Don’t ask, just go. You’ll thank me later.

FAVORITE PLACES TO TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS If they want barbecue, my first choice is always Gates Bar-B-Q (Burnt end on a bun, please!). Otherwise, it’s dinner at The Rieger with a drink at Manifesto before or after!

AMALFI COAST INSPIRED AL FRESCO DINING WRITTEN BY WILL BROWN

M

ore than eighteen months ago, I began orchestrating a milestone birthday excursion to the Amalfi coast in Italy. About a dozen friends and I relaxed and immersed ourselves in the local culture—all the while deepening our relationships. I prepared the perfect backdrop, which included discovering Villa Alba d’Oro, a historic luxury villa in the city of Amalfi, where we’d settle in for a week. One of the highlights of the trip was our al fresco cocktail party and birthday dinner hosted on the large outdoor terrace of the villa next to the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. My significant other agreed to organize the dinner for our group, and we rolled up our sleeves as his able

sous chefs. This included visiting the local markets for produce and seafood, making pasta from scratch, and selecting artisan cheese from a local cheese maker. With his experience in the kitchen and the world of specialty foods, he was able to create and test the meal months in advance—a meal that would turn out to be one of the best we’ve ever enjoyed. Returning to Kansas City has made me nostalgic for that perfect al fresco evening. For me, this is what living your most beautiful life encompasses. This is why I’m inspired to share this experience with SIMPLYkc readers. While there’s no substitute for the real thing—and I highly recommend experiencing the real thing—I have done my best to bring the Amalfi coast to you right here in Kansas City! Katie Laughridge, new owner of local furnishing store Nell Hill's, and I have collaborated on this idea, and I’m excited to bring a bit of the Italian coast to the Midwest. Check out Nell Hill's before the end of summer to see a curated Amalfi-inspired product that can bring the story to life in your own backyard. The Amalfi coast is known for several

things, including its fruits and seafood, so you must include these for an authentic al fresco dining experience. For my recreation of the experience, I called on my friends to let me borrow their gorgeous backyard terrace. A memorable moment from the trip was lunch at the famous Da Paolina restaurant on the Isle of Capri, where you dine amidst a beautiful lemon grove. You can recreate a touch of that experience by draping green garland and clustered lemons above the dining table. The region is well known for its citrus groves, so lemons, limes, and blood oranges are essential. Use them as often as possible in your dishes, as décor for your tablescape, and in your cocktails. I won’t soon forget the many hues of blue I experienced—from emerald and turquoise waters near Capri to the cerulean blue skies beyond the cliffs of Ravello. I was inspired to layer in these blues as a mixed set of linen napkins and tableware from Nell Hill's. Seafood is also a must for a coastal Italian town. Even if you can’t get your fresh catch of the day as easily as the Amalfi locals, adding shrimp, calamari, or anchovies will go a long way in

Inspiration Eighteen months before visiting Italy, Will Brown dreamt of setting an al fresco dining experience with the Italian coastline in the background. This dream was actualized at a villa overlooking the Amalfi coast. PHOTO BY WILL BROWN

helping add the taste of the sea to any salad or pasta. The petite, fishshaped dishes from Nell Hill's are versatile as well, and you can use them for serving olive tapenade, pistachios, or olive oil. When the evenings begin to cool down and you can enjoy the idea of an Italian escape, an al fresco meal is a great way to make the most of your summer sunsets. If you’re looking for something a little dif-

ferent than burgers and brats, a bit more elevated but still casual, try an Amalfi-inspired al fresco dining experience. Who knows? You may find yourself making a toast to planning your own Amalfi coast trip to the Italian lemon groves and charming coastal towns that seem to descend right into the Mediterranean Sea—all over some wonderful Negroni cocktails.

KACIE A BARKING SHAME

My neighbor’s dog won’t stop barking outside. I’ve left a note on my neighbor’s door to please bring the dog inside, but they’re ignoring my request. They’re never home when I knock on the door. What do I do?

Can I give you some advice? Of course I can, I’m an advice columnist. Don’t put this on your neighborhood’s social media page, or on social media at all. Your request will get screenshot and mocked. Trust me. You’re in the right here, though. Here’s my real advice. First—attempt to text, email, and send a private message on eNeighbors. Then knock on the door as soon as the garage door goes down. You didn’t hear this from me but be a stalker. I mean, they have to sleep at some point. If that doesn’t work, go to your HOA and register a complaint. Then call animal patrol. With this heat, the safety of the dog is a concern. Really, if the dog is barking all day every day, you should skip everything I said and just call animal patrol. You can still stalk a little bit, too. Who are these people, anyway?

If you have any questions you’d like Kacie to answer, submit them to contact@simplykcmag.com.

HPV VACCINE GIVES

CANCER PROTECTION FOR BOYS AND GIRLS WRITTEN BY ANN MUDER

HPV is a virus that can cause cervical cancer. But it’s not just a virus that affects women—HPV-related cancer can affect men as well.

mune system doesn’t clear the infection, it can lead to cancer. Because an oropharyngeal infection doesn’t cause symptoms, those who are infected can unknowingly transmit the virus to their partners. “Unfortunately, with oropharyngeal cancer, we don’t have a test to screen patients like we can with a pap smear,” says Dr. Wirtz. “While most people who have that high-risk strain won’t develop cancer, there’s just no way to predict who will and who won’t.”

HPV Vaccine Studies show that the HPV vaccine is effective in reducing the number of people with high-risk strains of HPV in their mouth and throat, says Dr. Wirtz. The vaccine protects against several strains of HPV, including HPV 16, which is the most common strain in oropharyngeal cancers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year, more than 33,000 men and women in the United States are diagnosed with an HPV-related cancer, including cancers of the genital area, mouth, and throat. Almost four out of 10 HPV cancers occur in men. One of the fastest growing HPVrelated cancers is cancer of the throat, also called oropharyngeal cancer. According to the CDC, 70 percent of oropharyngeal cancers are caused by the HPV virus. It’s more common in men, and the rate is growing faster than any other type of cancer for the middle-aged white male demographic, explains Nicholas Wirtz, MD, oto-

laryngologist-head and neck surgeon with AdventHealth. “It’s been steadily increasing over the last 15 years, likely becoming more common than cervical cancer in the next one to two years,” says Dr. Wirtz. “Cancer in the mouth and throat due to smoking and alcohol have been decreasing, yet we’re still seeing a rise in oropharyngeal cancers due to HPV.” Between three to four percent of the population has high risk oral HPV, but the percentage who will develop cancer is significantly lower, says Dr. Wirtz. Most people with the virus won’t get cancer because their immune systems will get rid of the infections within a couple of years. When the body’s im-

The CDC recommends boys and girls ages 11 or 12 get the HPV vaccine so they can be protected before they’re exposed to the virus. Two doses of vaccine are recommended for patients 14 and younger, with the second dose given six to 12 months after the first dose. For patients 15 to 26 years old, the vaccinations are given in three shots over six months. Ideally, females and males should get the HPV vaccination before they become sexually active. Those who are already sexually active can still get the vaccine, but may get less benefit if they’ve already been exposed to the HPV virus. Traditionally, Kansas has had the lowest HPV vaccination rates in the nacontinued on page 20

tion, but that’s starting to improve, says Dan Leong, spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. “We’ve made a lot of improvements, but still need to do more, especially in educating people about following through with getting the second shot in the series,” he says. “We want to make sure people are educated about the HPV vaccine and understand its benefits.” The American Cancer Society is helping provide that education through its Mission: HPV Cancer Free campaign. By 2026, the goal is for vaccination rates in Kansas to get up to

80 percent completion for both boys and girls. “If we had a vaccine for breast, lung, or prostate cancer, I think we’d run out of it, because everyone would be rushing to get it,” says Leong. “We have the opportunity to give our kids a vaccine so they don’t have to be diagnosed later in life with an HPV-related cancer. It’s really about saving lives.” Parents should talk with their child’s doctor about the best time to start the HPV vaccination schedule. THE SUITE LIFE: BLUSKY SALON SUITES WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

BluSky Salon Suites allows you to move up in your career—get promoted, become your own boss. If you’re a salon professional, moving into a suite is moving your business to the next level. BluSky Salon Suites offers the ability to move upward while working alongside the best of the best salon professionals in Kansas City. “Once cosmetologists graduate from school, they usually work at a commission-based salon where they can build a clientele and continue to learn, with the next step becoming their own boss in booth rental or salon suites,” says Diana Cheatham, co-owner of BluSky Salon Suites. Jamie Lingner, Cheatham’s daughter and co-owner of BluSky Salon Suites, says, “If you’re not 100 percent happy where you are, just come look. Walk through—there’s no pressure. Set your standards high and grow your clientele at our suites.” Cheatham says she always liked working with hair, but it was never a lifelong dream. “Once I went to school for it, though, I found out I loved the industry,” she explains. Lingner’s dream was to work in broadcasting while attending University of Kansas. She ended up attending beauty school as well, though. “Looking back, I was already cutting my friends’ hair. I was into it,” Lingner laughs. “My friends thought since my mom cut hair, I would be good too. But I never regretted my decision once I went to school.” Cheatham and Lingner have worked together for the past 15 years, sharing the same chair and space. They rarely

worked side-by-side since they held different hours and different days with their own clientele. As the women moved up the beauty industry, though, they discovered what stylists really want. “Once we worked in the suite environment, we never wanted to work in an open salon again,” Lingner explains. It wasn’t until opening BluSky Salon Suites that Cheatham and Lingner found out what it’s like to work as a team without having the stress of managing anyone.

"The atmosphere and vibe speak for themselves at BluSky. My clients love it." Their work paid off. Their BluSky Salon Suites location in Leawood began to have a high-demand waitlist, so Cheatham and Linger have launched a second location in Corbin Park. Inside there are 20 single suites and two double suites. Each suite has is its own room with glass barn doors, but the suites are not closed off from the rest of the salon. It’s quite the opposite—the salon shares a processing area in the back to allow clients to relax in massage chairs and enjoy a cup of coffee or Kombucha tea.

“We have merged the best of both worlds,” explains Lingner. “We offer suites for stylists to rent, but we still give them the open-salon feel.” The check-in system is digital, sending a text message to each stylist when clients arrive. Stylists are free to choose their own hours and which products they use. Most appointments are booked in advance. Customers of the salon can book from the website, bluskysalonsuites.com, or find the stylist they wish to see and call them directly. Sarah Campbell, a stylist at BluSky Salon Suites, says, “The atmosphere and vibe speak for themselves. My clients love the beautiful interior. I’m proud to say I’ve never worked with more confident, smart, beautiful, and talented women. Jamie and Diana are always there if we need anything and they make it easy for us to run our own businesses stress-free.” Lingner finds herself working behind the chair most days, and Cheatham works on the business side. Lingner says, “Since opening BluSky, I have found that my mom and I are very different, but it works out well. We complement each other. It was like we were meant to do this. My favorite thing is watching businesses and stylists grow into their own boss. When someone wants to rent a suite from us, we know they’ve made a name for themselves. We are a small community of great stylists with large clienteles.”

BEAUTY

IS NON-INVASIVE

BODY CONTOURING RIGHT FOR YOU? WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

Have you used every fad diet and exercise plan you can find, yet you still can’t shake that last bit of body fat? Maybe it’s a pregnancy pooch that no number of crunches will eliminate, or a bothersome double chin you’ve carried all your life, even though you’re not overweight. You are not alone. According to a 2013-2014 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES), more than two out of every three adults in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese. People combat weight and unwanted fat in a variety of ways—with diet and fitness topping the list. Some turn to plastic surgery, but others who want change shy away from “going under the knife.” Instead, they are part of the growing population turning to non-invasive body contouring. In fact, by 2016 Americans spent just shy of 250 million dollars on this service, according to Healthline.com.

So, what exactly is it? Non-invasive body contouring is an opportunity for those very close to the weight and size they wish to be to get those final troublesome areas shaped. Most doctors and aestheticians recommend that your body mass index not exceed 30 if you wish to have this procedure.

“I personally have tried conventional liposuction and experienced both cool and heat non-invasive body contouring,” says Nikki Lindsey, spa manager and lead aesthetician at Mia Bella Donna Medspa in Overland Park. “My results have come from heat. I’ve found that in either case, you must be willing to make or maintain a healthy lifestyle choice. At Mia Bella Donna Medspa, we take the time to educate our patients so they are enthusiastic partners in the success of their individual goals.” Also referred to as nonsurgical fat reduction, non-invasive body contouring includes a handful of procedures that remove or reduce fat in specific areas. The fat is removed, and reshaping occurs during the process. Typically, these processes are one of four types:

1.

Injection

Lipolysis:

Deoxycholic Acid is injected into the area to reduce the fat cells.

2. Cryolipolysis:

This procedure freezes the fat cells through controlled cooling.

3. Laser Lipolysis:

This procedure utilizes a laser to reduce the fat cells.

4. Radiofrequency Lipolysis: Ultrasound and heat reduce the fat cells in this methodology. The treatments are quick, minimally invasive, and most can go right back to work or home after the treatment. Even better, there are little to no side effects. Sometimes patients may experience a bit of mild pain during the procedure or slight swelling or redness after the procedure, but that’s it. And this contouring process can address nearly any area a patient may be interested in exploring: arms, tummy, thighs, chin.

So how do you choose which procedure and which doctor is right for you? The procedure that is right for you should be a decision made after an in-depth discussion between you and your cosmetic surgeon, and after an evaluation of your needs and body. This means finding the right doctor is key to your satisfaction and

well-being, because these decisions have long-term impacts.

PARENTING

TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT BULLYING WRITTEN BY REBECCA FISCHER

“Kids can be so cruel” and “Just ignore it” used to be common responses from parents. In the past, bullying was often shrugged off by well-meaning parents who may have forgotten what it was like as a kid. From an adult’s perspective, a bully could seem weak or attention-seeking. But with social media making it ever easier for bullies to find and harass victims, it has become essential for parents to take their behavior seriously, talk openly to their kids about it, and prepare them in case it happens.

Real repercussions Anxiety and depression are on the rise in young people, and studies show that victims of bullying are more likely to experience both. Some reports even link bullying with suicide attempts in young people—another growing concern. When it comes to discussing bullying with our children and arming them against it, sayings such as “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and “The best defense is a good

offense” are more apropos than “Kids can be so cruel” or “Just ignore it.” “I encourage parents to proactively talk to their kids—don’t wait until they’re victimized,” says David Dibella, founder of Mindful Defense in Overland Park. “There’s a chance that bullying has already happened to them to some extent.”

Defining bullying The first step is to help your child recognize a bully. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bullying is defined as “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.” The key is that both the bully and the victim understand that there is a real or perceived power imbalance, and that the behavior could, and usually does, happen more than once. This is why being bullied can feel so threatening to a child.

PARENTING CONT. Of course, teenagers and young adults (or any adult, for that matter) might still exhibit bullying behavior, but it will have a certain immaturity to it, resembling that of a child’s aggressive behavior. “One of the best messages we can send our kids about bullying is that it has nothing to do with them; the bully is the one with the problem,” Dibella says. “Encourage your child to talk to a teacher or another adult at school about it.”

Understanding the dynamics Once they can recognize a bully, helping to build your child’s self-esteem is critical to helping them learn to protect themselves. Besides showering them with positive words, attention, and hugs, kids can also benefit from proven, established practices to grow their confidence

and self-esteem. “Essentially, we show them how to be successful in reaching their goals. We’ll set a lofty goal, then break it into a series of smaller goals to create a roadmap to success,” says Dibella. “These small, achievable steps are more doable, giving kids confidence that they can handle any challenge.” Dibella’s self-defense classes also teach mindfulness, so that students experience a wider perspective and learn that they have choices when it comes to their reaction. “In the example of bullies, the best reaction is to see it as the bully’s problem and get a mediator—like a parent or teacher—involved,” Dibella says. “Even once they have the tools to protect themselves physically, that isn’t the best reaction.”

lying is also taught in the courses, including that bullies tend to feed on “success,” like seeing a negative reaction in the victim. All the more important for kids to be able to choose a better reaction.

Keep them talking Following up with kids after having the “bully talk” is important. Maybe they felt good discussing it with you in the past, but anxiety is now keeping them from bringing up any further issues. Keeping communication open is important in dealing with any challenge. Keep asking how their day went, even if you only get shrugged shoulders. Ask them what the highlight and lowlight of their day was. Having regular conversations about their day will also help parents notice any shifts that are occurring, including those brought on by bullying.

MICHAEL CORVINO OWNER & EXECUTIVE CHEF CORVINO RESTAURANT WRITTEN BY T.E. CUNNINGHAM

C

orvino was born and raised in Walla Walla, Washington, but decided to seek out and learn from the great chefs all over the U.S. This journey took him all over the country, but eventually landed him in Kansas City, where he established his award-winning restaurant located in downtown KC on Walnut Street.

What is your favorite dish to prepare, and what is your favorite dish to eat? My favorite to prepare is pasta, but I can’t turn down a great slice of pizza, so that would have to be my favorite dish to eat.

Do you have a signature specialty drink? Pabst or Old Milwaukee.

What do you do for fun when you are not at the restaurant? I am an avid traveler, and I enjoy discovering new places to eat, new foods, and new drinks along the way with friends and family. I’m also into mountain biking.

Why should Kansas Citians give Corvino Restaurant a try?

Michael Corvino, owner and head chef of Corvino Restaurant, found his passion for food during high school. It wasn’t until after he graduated, though, that he realized he wanted to make this passion his career.

Because it is unlike any other establishment in KC. We employ a quality focus on creating and serving craveable and delicious food. It’s two concepts under one roof—a supper club and a tasting room.

How did you come up with the design for the restaurant, and what’s your favorite thing about it? Christina (my wife, business partner, GM, and wine director) fell for the space because of the tall ceilings and large columns. Designed around those features, with the focus of a stage for live music, we created our modern interpretation of a supper club.

What do you think is the single biggest challenge to running a successful restaurant? You have to have enough volume, creating enough business to turn a profit in any restaurant.

How do you wind down after an evening at the restaurant? Drinks! And we love to do have them outside when possible.

What award or recognition are you most proud of receiving in your career? I was honored to receive a James Beard Nomination.

Why live music every night? We felt like it spoke to our city—gave the restaurant a sense of “place” with Kansas Citians.

If you were teaching a class of first graders about food and diet, what piece of advice would you most want to impart to them? I would tell them to learn to appreciate the quality of ingredients and where they come from, because you will enjoy food more. Food doesn’t just come from large corporations; it comes from farmers, artisans, and makers that care about the product and your experience with it.

BECAUSE I SAID SO...

WHAT MY KIDS REALLY LEARNED OVER SUMMER BREAK WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY SAMANTHA LEVI

W

elcome back to the official holiday of parenthood—back to school. This means teachers are back in our lives, and I know they’re going to ask my children what they did over summer break. I’ve been parenting long enough to know it’s the standard “get to know you” question every teacher asks. My kids will give some canned answer like, “we visited Atlanta and Mom really loves moonshine,” but I’ll tell you what my kids really learned over summer break.

Science How to attract ants: A little line of marching ant soldiers led straight to my childrens’ rooms, straight to the never-ending land of sugar. The menu included Freeze Pop wrappers, juice box straw wrappers, and Valentine’s Day candy left over from their classroom.

Physical Education Drowning each other in the pool: They survived. They’re fine.

Math How to add up to zero dollars: Four tickets to Royals games plus one bomb pop plus the blue cotton candy (not the pink one) plus your dad’s beer plus why do you need hot chocolate when it’s hot out plus oh my God, where’s the beer guy at? IT EQUALS ZERO. ZERO DOLLARS.

English Slang: Does slang include cuss words? I say slang is every word in the book about how I feel about Freeze Pop wrappers. (I can’t say those words here because this column would be yanked.) It’s hot. It’s August. I can’t think straight.

Life lessons “O-M-G, Mom. I’m literally dying. Of. Boredom”: The language arts took a hit. I told you, I’m not good at this.

It was all their father. He went to the grocery store.

Common sense This isn’t a real subject, but hear me out: My 10-year-old spilled sugar all over the floor and used a dry paper towel to clean it up—a dry paper towel. I whacked some common sense into her by teaching her how to use a mop. See? I did good there. Well...I did well there.

History In August of 1993 my mom told me I’d better start waking up early: I still sleep in until 11:30 a.m. with my tweens because yes, Mom. I still enjoy sleeping in. Good luck with my kids this year, teachers. Thank you and I’m so sorry.

Nutrition You can survive for three months on marshmallows and Sunny D:

C SKINCARE COVERS IT ALL IN KC WRITTEN BY NATALIE CHRISTIE MCGOVERN / PHOTOS BY JAMI MARSHALL

From sensitive skin to anti-aging, C Skincare offers a variety of esthetic services in the KC metro. Owner Helen Seo, who created the company, has credentials in the Korean beauty industry, and wanted to bring her knowledge and the fundamentals of skincare to a mainstream audience. Influenced by her sister, who created organic cosmetics for ten years, Seo was most inspired by the fact that many people focus more on their makeup than taking care of their skin. She set out to change this trend.

Six months off the ground and C Skincare is introducing natural, organic, K beauty-inspired treatments and services. Seo firmly believes that the beauty of the natural state of a human being is directly related to health. She was driven to open a business to offer the best skincare locally and spread a message about the significance of skincare. With this in mind, C Skincare specializes in acne care, sensitive skin types, and anti-aging skincare regimens. C Skincare’s brand identity is based on wellness and maintenance of a healthy, youthful state of the mind and skin. Its motto is, “The more time you spend, the younger you are,” a tenant the company is founded upon. “It is our goal to spread the idea that the skin is deserving of investment and nurture,” explains Seo. “We are interested in health, beauty, and well-being.” Focusing on rejuvenation and antiaging beauty, the company aims to help revitalize skin and create a radiant glow from within. In order to keep skin looking youthful, fresh, and vibrant, individuals must devote time and care to maintain the appearance of healthy skin from within with essential skincare sessions. To get started, Seo offers consultations for clients and an in-depth assessment of a person’s skin and its needs. For Seo, this is like a blueprint. No skin type is exactly the same, and a professional consultation addresses the personal needs of various skin types. Depending upon the treatment plan being advised, different ingredients are implemented for overall skin beauty and health.

Helen Seo founded C Skincare with the goal to spread the idea that the skin is deserving of investment and nurture.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT

THE POWER OF PLAY BAGS OF FUN KC

WRITTEN BY JULIE BURTON / PHOTOS BY LOUISA WEINRICH

“It feels like a frog jumping on my brain.” That’s how six-year-old Gabby Krause described her brain tumor in 2004. Gabby passed away in September of 2004 after a 19-month battle with brain cancer in Denver, Colorado. In those 19 months, Gabby spent her chemotherapy days singing and dancing. She played with My Little Pony dolls through the never-ending needle pokes. And she always had one thing with her—a “bag of fun.” Inside Gabby’s bag of fun was her escape from her sickness—games and toys. She would share her bag with other patients at the hospital. Before Gabby passed away, she wished every child could have their own bag of fun. Bags of Fun is the signature project of the Gabby Krause Foundation started by Gabby’s mother, Tammy Krause, to honor her daughter’s final wish. The foundation’s mascot is a cheerful frog to remember Gab-

by and to bring a little playfulness during such a dark time. Louisa Weinrich is the Director of Bags of Fun—Kansas City. The Kansas City chapter of Bags of Fun began in 2011. Weinrich’s daughter completed a high school service project in Denver, and convinced her mom to quit teaching and start the Kansas City branch of Bags of Fun. Eight years later, Kansas City has given more than 1,500 bags of fun to children. Each bag of fun is a brightly colored backpack filled with $400 worth of age-specific toys, games, and an electronic component such as a Kindle Fire or a DVD player. If a child has a specific interest or special need, Bags of Fun will try to meet that interest or need as best as they can. The toys and games are custom

picked for each child and provide practical entertainment for a hospital setting. Bags of Fun are delivered to every sick child whose health and happiness is both compromised and threatened. The Child Life Department or social workers at the local hospitals decide which kids receive a bag of fun. The child must meet the long-term, life-threatening criteria. It’s not exclusive to children with cancer. A child may be sick with something such as sickle cell anemia, chronic cystic fibrosis, or be receiving a heart or liver transplant. Once Bags of Fun receives a child’s name, they make contact with the parent or guardian and begin the process of choosing what to give the child. “Follow me around for a day and you won’t complain about your life,”

Weinrich says. “I wish everyone had the chance to experience a delivery of a bag of fun. That’s how you see the power of play.”

long time.’ To have a parent say that … From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, this child made a complete 180.”

During filming of an anniversary video, Weinrich delivered a bag of fun to a little girl from rural Kansas. The little girl’s family is Indian and speak little English. When Weinrich walked in, the little girl was in bed, unresponsive. Her mother, father, and grandmother were in the room.

A kid may be stuck in the hospital, but sometimes he or she is also stuck in the room. “We give them things that are just plain silly—little squeeze things to shoot at doctors and nurses or a remote control car on the floor,” Weinrich explains. “Parents will tell you it’s not that they can’t afford this stuff, but it’s just a really dark time in their lives. Our job is to lift the mood. It’s powerful.”

Weinrich remembers, “We came in and she sat up. We gave her a princess cape and started playing with her. The little girl’s grandmother started talking rapidly in their native language. It was almost like she was angry. I felt a little leery. Then her mom started crying. The dad finally told us, ‘It’s ok, it’s ok— we haven’t seen her like this in a long,

How you can help: Raise $400 for a Bag of Fun. Private donations are accepted and you can help pick out the toys for the child. Adults ages 18 years and older

can be there to deliver the bag of fun. Families have raised money through “birthday parties with a purpose” (where donations are accepted in place of presents) or setting up lemonade stands to raise money. Corporate donations are always welcome too. Employees can help pick out toys and deliver them to the children.

Attend community events. The next event is the 9th Annual KC White & Black Party, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 pm at the Kill Devil Club & Gallery Event Space. There will be an open bar, sitdown dinner, and dancing. Tickets are $150 per person, $1,500 for a table of 10 and must be purchased by Aug. 20 at bagsoffunkansascity.org.

GOOD TASTES

Pasta With Jalapeño, Summer Squashes & Sweet Corn SERVES 6

Ingredients 1p ound spiral, bow tie, or penne rigate pasta 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 zucchini, sliced 1/4-inch thick 1 yellow squash, sliced 1/4-inch thick 2- 1/2 cups raw corn kernels (from 5 ears of fresh sweet corn) 3 scallions, white and pale-green parts only, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 jalapeño, minced (add more for additional heat!) 1/2 cup chicken stock 4 tablespoons unsalted butter Salt and pepper Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, for garnish

TURN UP THE HEAT WRITTEN BY LESLI LUNDQUIST / PHOTO BY CARMEN CARVER

No worries—I am not wishing for the summer temperatures to climb any higher. I am simply referring to the heat from that wonderful little pepper: the jalapeño. Add as little or as much as you’d like to this seasonal dish. This pepper is nestled among summer squashes, fresh sweet corn, and bathed in a buttery broth, delivering that perfect sweet-to-heat ratio. With August temperatures holding steady at just plain hot, challenge the weather with a jalapeño heat of your own.

Directions Cook pasta according to package directions in salted water. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. Heat oil in a large, deep skillet over medium-high heat. Add squashes and cook until softened and light gold, about 6 to 7 minutes. Add corn, scallions, garlic, jalapeño, chicken stock, and 2 tablespoons of butter. Season with the salt and pepper, and cook until the corn is tender, about 5 minutes. Add pasta, the reserved cooking liquid, and the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter to the vegetable mixture. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, until the pasta is well-coated, about 3 minutes. Garnish with scallions and shaved cheese. Recipe source: Bon Appétit, month/edition not known

TRICKS FOR INSTANT CALM

1 Jam out to your favorite tunes.

Hearing music you love might be good for your heart, according to research from the University of Maryland. It can relax blood vessels and increase blood flow.

2 J ust laugh.

Take a 10-minute break to watch a silly YouTube video to help pull you out of a slump.

3 Cuddle more.

A Kinsey Institute study found snuggling releases the hormone oxytocin, which triggers the dopamine system in your brain and boosts your mood.

4 Fake it.

A 2012 study shows faking a smile may help lower your heart rate, even

in high-stress situations. In the study, participants completed stressful tasks while holding chopsticks in their mouths to produce smiles, and the findings revealed that all participants remained calmer than the control group.

5 E mbrace your inner child & color. Doodling and coloring require you to use both sides of your brain, which stops the stress cycle, helping you instantly feel better, say researchers at Harvard Medical School.

6 B reak out your phone.

A Kansas State University study found that people who play on their smartphones throughout the workday were happier at the

end of the day. This is because it’s similar to chatting with coworkers or taking a short walk. The breaks rejuvenate your productivity, focus, and creativity.

7 Take a snack break.

Researchers at the University of Barcelona in Spain say a handful of mixed nuts (raw walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts) helps you feel better by raising your serotonin levels. An added bonus: The nuts also boost heart health.
