DEAR KACIE

FIRST AND DONE

I am back into the dating scene after my divorce. I joined the dating apps and have been enjoying my newfound freedom. I had a few successful dates, but I’m keeping my options open. But I am awful at saying no to the second date. Maybe there’s no chemistry or he doesn’t look anything like his photos, but I don’t say no even when I want to. Instead, I ghost them if I don’t like them. Is there a better way of telling a date, “No thanks”?
Send him a bunch of ghost emojis and he’ll get the clue. (Okay, don’t do that.) And don’t ghost him either.
But first, congrats on getting back into the dating world! And getting back into the dating app world. That isn’t easy.
Okay, so the sparks aren’t flying and you don’t want to see this guy again. How do you say no? If you met on the apps, it’s helpful to not exchange phone numbers until you know you really like the guy. It makes communication easier to stop.
After the date, simply message him and thank him for his time, wish him well in the future, and unmatch. If you have exchanged numbers, you can follow up the same way. Be honest and brief. He knows you’re dating other people too, and most likely he’s dating others as well. An easy excuse to get out of a second date is you can say you’re talking to someone else and would like to pursue that relationship.
The best way to break up with someone after the first date is by actually breaking it off. He deserves to know he can move on. And so do you.
