Prestressed concrete flooring installed at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown by JH Turkington & Sons Ltd
CLIENT: JH Turkington & Son Ltd CONTRACT: University of Ulster LOCATION: Jordanstown Campus, Shore Rd, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, NORTHERN IRELAND COMPLETION DATE: February 2009 SECTOR: Educational/Student Village
ABOUT THE PROJECT Spanwright UK completed the design, supply and installation of 12,000m2 of prestressed concrete flooring units to the University of Ulster, Jordanstown in two phases for JH Turkington & Son Ltd. Phase 1 saw the redevelopment of the former Student Village at Jordanstown opening in February 2008 and Phase 11 of Dalriada Student Village completed in February 2009.
PROJECT CHALLENGES The execution of the supply of prestressed slabs directly from client drawings dictated high levels of accuracy on detailing and production to ensure project time constraints were met with minimum disruption on site. Spanwright prestressed units were tailored to maintain load bearing requirements and continuity reinforcement of structures, this also achieved maximum internal capacity in apartments and commercial units in the village.
