MY LOVE FOR SCILLY’S LIGHTHOUSES BY MINNIE DRIVER, ENGLISH ACTRESS AND FIRST-TIME VISITOR TO SCILLY

I love lighthouses. I’m not sure exactly why, but they speak to a forethought of kindness for strangers: a literal beacon, conceived for the safety and wellbeing of others, known or unknown. Scilly has some of my favourite lighthouses. This summer, visiting for the first time with my boyfriend who was born on St. Mary’s, we walked up and around the corner from The Turks Head on St. Agnes and I felt the familiar rush of something upon seeing the 18th Century lighthouse in the distance. On another day we walked from the Garrison, down through the town, stopping only to buy our ice creams before continuing up Buzza Hill. My 7 year old Henry had, like most children, been horrified at the idea of a walk as entertainment, but as we emerged from the relative shelter of the trees and onto the peninsula, the rush of wind, light and the curving path towards Peninnis lighthouse compelled him to briefly shout and then run. We found him pressed into one of the giant, smooth knuckles of rock, out of breath, face turned towards the sun, regarding the lighthouse. It stands 17 metres tall; powerful and beautiful - steadfast in the face of whatever is heading in from the southwest. Henry pointed out that due to the exposed steel lattice work that begins half way up (or down), the lighthouse looks like a lady who “forgot to put on her skirt”. Scilly is a truly remarkable place. To me, its many lighthouses are a symbol of how these glorious islands are intrinsically connected with the sea and how the Scillonians who live here have, for hundreds of years, used profound inherited knowledge to navigate both.

Minnie Driver debuted in Circle of Friends and followed up with roles in Grosse Pointe Blank, Good Will Hunting (for which she was nominated an Academy Award) and Goldeneye. She visited the Isles of Scilly for the first time in 2015.

Soak up the breathtaking views on your way or take a refreshing dip. This all adds up to a fabulous sense of wellbeing until long after you’ve returned home!

A different island every day

Amazing birds and wildlife

There are five inhabited islands that make up the Isles of Scilly – all small and all very close together. There are also many uninhabited ones to explore. It’s easy to do one island a day (or indeed, three in one!) so hop on a “tripper” boat and go explore. Walking is the best way to get around – and you’ll soon discover that each of the inhabited islands has a unique charm and character all its own.

The Isles of Scilly are home to a rich tapestry of wildlife. It is the only place in England where Storm petrels breed. It’s home to 75% of the world’s Manx shearwater population – and, excitingly, for the first time in a generation, chicks have started to breed here once more. Puffins arrive at the end of April and leave around mid-July. Look out, too, for red squirrels, cormorants, gannets, seals and occasional dolphins.

It’s easy to have fun Scilly is fun and there’s a lot to do if you’re an active sort! Here are just a few things you can do whilst you’re here: cycling, sailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkelling (with or without seals), diving, sea-swimming, golf, trail running, yoga, tennis – and walking, of course. You might also try your hand at gig racing. All the locals are incredibly friendly – they’ll be only too pleased that you want to have a go.

We eat what we catch and grow

Here on Scilly, not only do you know where your food comes from, but you can often point to the fisherman or farmer who provided it! We take great pride in our rich variety of local Scillonian produce – freshly caught lobster and crab, succulent duck and beef, lush ice cream, jams, fudge, chocolate, wines and beers – all grown or produced lovingly across the islands and served up at many of our restaurants, cafés, pubs and roadside farm stalls.

Our beaches simply sparkle

Flowers to enjoy all year

Even in the height of summer, you can enjoy beaches in Scilly all to yourself. Long stretches of sparkling white sand reminiscent of the Caribbean, and the sparkling crystal clear blue waters that surround the island archipelago. Admire the tiny inlets, coves and rocky outcrops that punctuate the more rugged of our coastlines. Balmy summer days or wild winter blows, there’s a deserted beach for every mood. Just for you.

The Isles of Scilly bloom all year long. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the islands are a wonderful haven for unusual and exotic plants and flowers from all over the world. Marvel at more than 20,000 species at the stunning Tresco Abbey Garden, and at the agapanthus, proteas and many other wild flowers that thrive throughout the summer. From late October, come and enjoy fields of scented narcissi, grown extensively and exported far and wide.

Scilly’s history is compelling – especially as it mingles so effortlessly with modern-day life. Our tiny land mass is home to 239 scheduled monuments, giving the islands a greater density of historical sites than anywhere else in the British Isles. From maritime shipwrecks to Bronze Age burial chambers dating back 3,000 years: from deserted Christian chapels on St. Helen’s to fortified castles and headlands from the British Civil War.

Magnificent walking People come to Scilly year-round to explore the wilderness on foot, and no wonder. There are more than 30 miles of nature trails and walks on St. Mary’s alone, while all the off-islands offer fantastic opportunities to walk their length and breadth. Every April and October, Scilly hosts Walk Scilly – a festival of themed, guided walks taking in our spectacular history, diverse coastal and country scenery, exotic plants and wildlife.

Artistic talent Per head of population (we’re not many!), Scilly boasts a plethora of artistic talent: some born and bred, others lured by the islands’ intensity of light and its effect on ever-changing seascapes and landscapes. Every island has its galleries and every island has its artists working in a variety of media – from oil painting, watercolours, leatherwork and jewellery to exquisite stained glass, pottery and screen-printing. Feast your eyes and take home some memories to cherish.

LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN Planning your journey to Scilly is where your adventure begins. You can fly with Skybus from Land's End (15 minutes), Newquay (30 minutes) or Exeter (1 hour), or you can sail on the Scillonian III from Penzance (2 hours, 45 minutes). Isles of Scilly Travel operates both Skybus and Scillonian III. There are no less than 13 direct and scheduled connections to Newquay and Exeter from across the UK – and more from Europe. There are plenty of hotel options within easy commuting distance of both airports too, should you require an overnight stay. Getting to Land's End and Penzance is also stress-free. If you don’t fancy the drive to the West Country why not arrive in style with Great Western Railway? The Night Riviera Service from London Paddington arrives in

Penzance in time for the morning departure on the Scillonian III. If you're flying from Land's End, there are seamless shuttle bus transfers from Penzance Station throughout the day direct to Land's End Airport, courtesy of Isles of Scilly Travel. There are many keen yachtsmen too, who opt to sail to Scilly. Not for the faint-hearted due to complicated navigation of the rocks, but an adventure definitely! The Harbour Master’s office will be delighted to advise on visitor moorings at St. Mary’s, Tresco and St. Martin’s and a variety of other anchorages. Whichever way you opt to travel, getting to Scilly really is unique: hassle-free, uncrowded and relaxed – just like Scilly itself! By the time you arrive in St. Mary’s (Scilly’s gateway to all the islands), you’ll definitely already be in holiday mode.

Skybus flights operate regularly to St. Mary’s (Scilly’s main island) from Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter Airports. A shuttle bus operates to and from Land’s End airport and Penzance Railway Station. You will fly in either the 8-seater Islander or 17-seater Twin Otter. There is plenty of parking at all airports, and a dedicated Park & Ride service in Penzance.

The Scillonian III passenger ferry operates six days a week from March to November (seven in high season) from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly. Although tides occasionally dictate travel times, generally speaking the boat leaves Penzance at 9.15am, arriving in St. Mary’s just before noon, and leaves St. Mary’s at 4.30pm arriving back in Penzance just after 7pm.

By sea... The Quay on St. Mary’s is a hive of activity particularly when the Scillonian III arrives alongside. As you disembark from the passenger ferry, you’ll be escorted to where your luggage can be collected.

Awaiting you in arrivals will be a team of shuttle bus drivers who will ask where you’re booked in to stay and will take you there. They know all the accommodation across St. Mary’s, so you won’t need to provide directions; just the name will do! A small flat rate will get you there and back at the end of your holiday.

STAYING ON ST. MARY'S? Grab your luggage – the drivers will help you – and hop on one of the shuttle buses. They go to different parts of the island, depending on where you’re staying, so make sure you’re on the right one!

BRYHER, ST. MARTIN’S, ST. AGNES? There’ll be a shuttle bus waiting at the airport for anyone heading off to holiday on St. Agnes, Bryher or St. Martin’s. Just let one of the drivers know, grab your luggage – the drivers will help you – and hop on to the appropriate mini bus for a lift down to St. Mary’s Quay and your connecting boat.

HEADING FOR TRESCO? If you’re staying on Tresco, a member of their team will simply meet you at the airport and whisk you away on the Tresco Shuttle – you’ll be met on the island and your luggage taken care of too.

If you’re staying on St. Mary’s, and your luggage is clearly labelled with your holiday address, it will be collected off the quay and delivered to your accommodation by local hauliers who simply “do the rounds”, without any intervention from you. You’ll be free to just walk off the ferry and head straight into Hugh Town or wherever you want to go! It costs just £1.40 per piece of luggage so great value for money. If you prefer you can opt to collect your bags from the quay. Bags for Bryher, Tresco, St. Martin’s or St. Agnes must be clearly labelled with

your name, holiday address and with colour-coded island labels (available at Penzance Quay) to ensure they end up on the right island! The off-island boat services always meet the Scillonian and your luggage is transferred seamlessly on to the correct island boat. Once delivered there, your bags will be taken, generally by tractor, to where you are staying by your accommodation host.

ISLAND HOPPING ON YOUR HOLIDAY One of the greatest pleasures when staying on Scilly is to island hop and discover each island's distinct charms. Scilly has all the colourful boats and experienced boatmen to take you where you want to go. More than 140 islands make up the tiny archipelago that is the Isles of Scilly. All but five are uninhabited, and many provide the ideal sanctuary for an array of rare seabirds, amazing wildlife and stunning coastal walks.

Island to Island No matter which island you are based on for your holiday, it’s easy to visit all the others. Most people “do an island a day” and there’s never a worry that you won’t get to where you want to go as there are plenty of boats laid on. On St. Mary’s, the Boatmen’s Association runs 10 colourful boats, some more than 80 years old, to St. Martin’s, Tresco, St. Agnes and Bryher every day throughout the season. Tresco Boat Services (serving Tresco, Bryher and St. Martin’s) and St. Agnes Boating both offer scheduled services to the other islands throughout the week. There are also evening trips throughout the summer to follow the gig races and “supper boats” that allow you to sample the pubs and restaurants across the islands.

Wonderful wildlife trips There are lots of opportunities to head out to sea to witness Scilly’s captivating wildlife up close! Depending on the time of year, you’ll be able to spot many stunning seabirds including puffins, shearwaters, cormorants, shags, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots and petrels as they glide across the open water, or perch precariously on a jagged rock! Scilly is also well known for its fabulous colonies of grey Atlantic seals – guaranteed to pop up and say hello.

Uninhabited Islands There’s something magical and mystical about stepping onto Samson, last inhabited by Scillonian families in the 1850s, or discovering the remains of St. Elidius Hermitage. And what about taking in the iconic Bishop Rock Lighthouse, England’s final frontier? Scilly is full of uninhabited islands and a trip to Scilly would not be complete without being dropped onto one of them – and collected, of course!

The Isles of Scilly is home to the largest surviving fleet of 19th Century gigs. Today, they are raced purely for pleasure, but their heritage remains very much a part of island life - from helping incoming ships to navigate the waters to smuggling and performing daring rescues. The Isles of Scilly has long been associated with pilot gigs. The islands were the first port of call after a long Atlantic crossing for fresh supplies or repairs. A ship would pick up a pilot to guide them safely into the shelter of St. Mary’s Pool. When a ship signalled with a

damaged their boats. Shortly after World War II, the working life of the pilot gig diminished, but racing for pleasure soon became a pastime and a passion on the islands. Scilly hosted the first World Pilot Gig Championship in 1990 with just 19 boats from Cornwall and the islands. Last year attracted some 140 gigs – hosting men’s, ladies’ and veterans’ teams from as far away as the USA. The “champs”, which take place every year, on the first Bank Holiday in May, have become an island spectacle as a carnival atmosphere descends across the archipelago. 1829 Eight and ten oared gigs are banned by HM Customs and Excise for being too fast for the excise cutters to catch smugglers. 1848 Around 200 men are working as pilots on the Isles of Scilly. 1880s Due to the industrial revolution, there is a decline in the use of sail and oar. Motorised lifeboats replace rowing lifeboats over the coming years. 1938 The last paid pilot in history to be delivered under oar, Jack Hicks from St. Agnes, is put aboard the SS Foremost by the gig Gypsy. 1950s The start of the pilot gig revival, as unused Scilly gigs are bought and restored by Newquay Rowing Club.

ALMANAC The Isles of Scilly is every inch an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a treasure trove of unusual plants, flowers and fauna. The islands draw wildlife professionals and enthusiasts year round.

HISTORY, CLIMATE, TIDES & DESIGNATIONS 6000BC-2000BC: The Isles of Scilly are first inhabited in the form of one large island, Ennor. 400-500AD: Rising sea levels flood the central plain, causing Ennor to split into the islands known today. CIRCA 939: Scilly is ruled by the English Crown under Athelstan, then further centralised after the Norman Conquest in 1066. CIRCA 1120: King Henry I gives the Isles of Scilly to the abbey of Tavistock, who establishes a priory on Tresco. Circa 1150: Vikings attack the Isles of Scilly, notably St. Mary’s. 1337: The Duchy of Cornwall takes ownership of the Isles of Scilly. 1548: Work commences on Tresco Castle (now King Charles’ Castle) under Edward VI. 1570: Elizabeth I leases the Isles of Scilly to Sir Francis Godolphin, who builds Star Castle, expecting attack by Spain. 1642-1650: During the Commonwealth the Parliamentarians capture the Isles, but their garrison mutiny and return it to the Royalists. Governor Sir John Grenville uses the islands as a base for privateering raids, leading to Holland declaring war on England. 1849: Scilly’s first hotel, Tregarthen’s, is founded by Captain Frank Tregarthen. 1859: The Cornwall Railway Link between Penzance and London is completed, and tourism starts to thrive.

1917: The Isles of Scilly are threatened by U-boats and a sea plane base is built at Porthmellon, which was later moved to New Grimsby on Tresco. 1920: The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company is founded, the first services provided by the ship, Peninnis. 1925: The Scillonian is launched. 1937: A de Havilland Dragon aircraft makes the first commercial flight between the mainland and Scilly, using the golf club as a runway. 1941: Six Hawker Hurricanes are transferred to the aerodrome to defend Scilly from the raids. 1975: Isles of Scilly is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). 1977: The Scillonian III is purposebuilt for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company and enters into service. 1984: The 335 Year War with The Netherlands officially ends. 1984: Skybus buys its first Islander aircraft – a service for freight and charter passengers only. 1987: Skybus commences scheduled operations between Land's End and Scilly using an eight-seater Islander. 2009: Skybus celebrates 25 years of service. 2014: Two British rowers make history by becoming the first people to cross the Atlantic in an open class pairs boat, arriving on Scilly in August.

OUR OCEAN CLIMATE The Isles of Scilly’s climate is best described as oceanic, and one of the mildest in the British Isles due to the Gulf Stream. Average temperatures throughout the year remain higher than mainland UK, ranging between 7 degrees and 19 degrees Celsius. May is the sunniest month and has about 7 hours of sunshine per day. TIDES & WATERS For an open sea location, the tidal range is high. The inter-island waters are also shallow, making it possible to walk between Bryher and Tresco at very low spring tides, although the sand is not totally dry. ROMANTIC SCILLY It’s hard not to fall in love with the Isles of Scilly, or indeed on the Isles of Scilly! And planning a wedding, considering a civil ceremony or seeking to renew your vows is very easy on the islands. There are six Anglican churches across Scilly, including one on each off-island. Additionally, there are a host of licensed venues across the islands including hotels and garden restaurants, as well as the Register Office right on Porthcressa Beach. Planning the rest of your special day couldn’t be easier either. Catering arrangements can be made through all the hotels and many of the restaurants, talented photographers abound and there is no shortage of florists (or indeed flowers) on the islands. There’s even a specialist wedding cake baker.

First impressions of Scilly The islands are absolutely beautiful and look like they’ve just been plucked right out of the Caribbean and popped next to the UK mainland. The water is as clear as you hear and read about, the beaches as sandy and the food impeccable! There are times when you have to pinch yourself to remind you that you're not on some tropical island far away from the UK – even the plants here are unlike any you’d find on the UK mainland!

Everything is so picturesque There’s definitely something about the air when you’re by the seaside that leaves you absolutely knackered by the end of the day. It may also be in part due to the fact that everything is so picturesque (and the weather is so amazing) that you end up spending every minute exploring the islands.

The birds are so tame! The wildlife on Scilly is truly exquisite, especially the birds. The sparrows hop around persistently trying to nick your lunch, but they’re so adorable that you can’t help but feed them and at the same time feel guilty for feeding them fish and chips (which were delicious by the way). The song thrushes are bigger and are the ones to look out for… they make the best photographic subjects because they stick around just that extra fraction of a second longer!

Don't miss out on Tresco Tresco is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in Europe and definitely in the UK! The Tresco Abbey Garden is a labyrinth of colours and the most tropical and colourful plants imaginable. These gardens are definitely the perfect place to get lost in. There are so many secret paths and hidden walkways that will totally leave you wandering around almost entranced for hours. There’s also a place within the Abbey Garden called Valhalla where you can see the figureheads of some of the shipwrecks with most of them dating back centuries. If you haven’t spent the whole day in the garden, don’t forget to pop by the medieval monastery ruin which is pretty much taken over by plants and is very pretty in its own unique way…

Prepare to eat, eat, eat! We had some pretty fantastic food on the Isles of Scilly, but we soon established that The New Inn was hands-down the best place to eat on Tresco – we returned there far too many times than we should admit to, but it goes without saying that you really have to try the scotch egg, waffles, and Venetian-tasting ice cream! It also serves the most gigantic pieces of sticky toffee pudding ever… After making the potentially fatal mistake of skipping breakfast before heading off to Bryher, we were saved by the Fraggle Rock Bar – which happily greeted us with Pimms and tasty fish and chips. But after learning our lesson on Bryher, we didn’t make the same mistake in St. Agnes, so we popped into the pub to order a breakfast / lunch / brunch of fish and chips before carrying on! Another little gem on St. Agnes was Covean Cottage Café, where we had the most amazing homemade scones, jam and clotted cream, served with locally produced lemonade and apple juice… it’s safe to say that we didn’t choose the tea and scones life… the tea and scones life chose us! Other great spots to eat include the Ruin Beach Café (the clue is in the name – the restaurant is set amidst the ruins on the beach). It has one of the nicest views on Tresco and does one hell of a crab pasta. Juliet’s Garden is essential when you’re on St. Mary’s – the staff here are very friendly and even let us in before opening-time because our tummies were rumbling that badly! Naturally with the sun shining as nicely as it did we had to oblige by having some strawberry Pimms, complemented by fragrant soup, scallops with parmesan cheese biscuits, pie, lamb, marmalade Bakewell tart and posset (but we won’t try to tempt you any more…)

Hankering to return very soon It’s always great to be back home, don’t get me wrong but I most certainly left the Isles of Scilly with a new found favourite holiday destination in the UK and a hankering to return to the islands as soon as possible! I genuinely, truly, really cannot recommend the Isles of Scilly enough – you definitely have to visit whenever you’re in the UK! < PREV

An island of surprises St. Mary’s is the Isles of Scilly’s largest island, but still less than 2.5 square miles in size. It is an island of colour and contrast that also acts as the gateway to and from the mainland and to the off-islands (Tresco, St. Martin’s, Bryher and St. Agnes). It’s also home to 1,800 of Scilly’s 2,200 or so residents. Hugh Town, a small village by mainland standards, serves as the central hub, nestling on a sandy isthmus between two beaches with its cluster of shops, banks, churches, post office, cafés, galleries, restaurants and pubs. Here you will also find the fascinating Isles of Scilly Museum – a real gem and a fantastic introduction to the story of the islands’ past. St. Mary’s community tends to converge on Hugh Town for family events, fundraisers and a good night out! Town Beach is a great vantage point for looking across the harbour to the Quay. Porthcressa Beach, on the other side, boasts a lovely promenade with sheltered seating, gardens, a children’s play park and the Schiller Shelter, which has its own story to tell dating back to when SS Schiller was wrecked off Scilly in 1875, and which now hosts the Tourist Information Centre. Around the corner from Hugh Town, St. Mary’s Quay buzzes with daily activity. Colourful tripper boats to and fro across the water to the other islands, sailors and fishermen come and go, and islanders set their watches to the daily arrival and departure of the Scillonian III. With only nine miles of road and more than 30 miles of paths and nature trails (ten of them coastal), away from the gentle hubbub of Hugh Street and the Quay, St. Mary’s is an easy-going safe haven of hidden treasures… The Garrison is the heavily fortified headland beyond Star Castle, now one of Scilly’s most iconic hotels. St. Mary’s offers the most in terms of island adventure. A great way to explore the wilder landscapes and escape “up country’ is on foot. If you don’t fancy the walk, you can hire a bike in town or a golf buggy, or enjoy your very own taxi tour. You can also horse-ride around much of St. Mary’s or set off on the water in a kayak! First stop might be the Lifeboat Station at the far end of Town Beach, which displays paintings, models and many accounts of past rescues. Next door, Porthmellon Beach is popular with families with the beach front restaurant, Spero's, and the Isles of Scilly Sailing Centre providing all the kit and caboodle for windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking. Alongside are the gig sheds – worth a peek to check out the traditional six-oar pilot gig boats, one or two of which date back to 1830. Opposite the beach, behind Radio Scilly, you’ll find Phoenix Craft Studios at Porthmellon Business Park, a hive of talented artistic activity, St. Mary’s Bike Hire and Ales of Scilly, home of the micro-brewery. Further along the beach, you'll reach Porthloo Studios, just off the coastal path - a hub of activity for Scilly Gems, Scilly Socks and the artist Peter MacDonald Smith. The whole area is protected by Harry’s Walls the remains of uncompleted fortifications from 1551.

TIME FOR FAMILY On easygoing St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life slows down. Old Town Bay, seen here, is a 15-minute stroll from Hugh Town.

Then head up the gentle hill – via the secluded Carreg Dhu Garden, a wonderful spot to seek solitude amongst beautiful exotic plants – to McFarland’s Down, perhaps via Juliet’s Garden Restaurant & Bar or the Kaffehaus, to view the ancient Iron Age and Romano-British settlements at Bant’s Carn and Halangy Down. Further along the coast path you’ll reach the amazing Bronze Age tombs at Innisdgen just above the breathtaking Bar Point, which stretches toward St. Martin’s and Tresco and the site of a former causeway between the islands. Then meander, via the flower farms at Trenoweth, on to Watermill Cove and Pelistry Bay, where you can wander across to Toll’s Island at low tide. Porth Hellick Bay typifies much of Scilly with its nature trail that stretches back to the tiny hamlet of Holy Vale, its amazing rock formations, and its sheltered beach. It lays claim to the aptly named “loaded camel” rock and the memorial to Sir Cloudesley Shovell, the Admiral of the Fleet whose body was washed ashore here in 1707. As you head back on the circular tour, you’ll reach Old Town, a beautifully-enclosed sandy bay flanked on one side by Old Town Church. It still holds Evensong services by candlelight, whilst the graveyard is dominated by a memorial to Augustus Smith, founder of Tresco Abbey Garden, and the final resting place of former British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. Old Town, with its shop, artist studios and lovely Old Town Café also make this little haven an ideal base for a holiday. A short coastal walk around the headland from here brings you back into Hugh Town via Peninnis Lighthouse, the austere rock formations such as Pulpit Rock, Tooth Rock and Sleeping Giant, and Porthcressa Beach. the north, you’ll be able to listen to the ocean bellowing into Piper’s Hole, discover Bronze Age burial sites, and tread in the footsteps of the English Civil War at Cromwell’s Castle. Two fortifications, King Charles’ Castle and the Old Blockhouse, were erected a hundred years earlier in the 16th Century to bolster the defences of New Grimsby and Old Grimsby harbours. The core of the island gives way to gentle well tended fields stocking the island’s beef cattle, shady woodland, and Tresco’s freshwater pools and three bird hides. There are many vantage points on Tresco offering some of the best views across to the other islands whilst the beaches, in particular the glorious curve of Pentle Bay, will definitely impress! Tresco is a place for beachcombers and walkers to do as they please. For the more active, there’s bike hire and a sailing school in the summer. Eating out, you can enjoy the fabulous Ruin Beach Café and excellent New Inn, scene of the island’s Ale and Cider Festivals and many a local band. Truly inspiring Pounded by Atlantic waves on one side and blessed with calm sandy beaches on the other, Bryher is as diverse as it is beautiful. It is a perfect place to enjoy a taste of untamed Scilly. The sheer rugged beauty of Bryher’s northern coastline by Shipman Head gives way to the wilder west side where the Atlantic rollers thunder into Hell Bay. In the south, you can enjoy Rushy Bay – a stunning, secluded, white sandy beach that looks out across to Samson. On the Eastern beaches, you’ll find Green Bay, a gentle spot for watching the world go by, and dipping into the glassy blue waters as they lap the gentle shore line. At especially low tides (around the Equinoxes) it is even possible to walk out from Bryher’s Green Bay all the way to Tresco. Just one and a half miles long by half a mile wide, the dramatic contrast and unique charm of the island never fails to impress. It’s no wonder that Michael Morpurgo finds so much inspiration here!

If you walk the coastal path, you can climb the seven hills of Bryher in just over five miles. Although the total climb is nearly 1,000 feet in total, none of the “hills” rises more than 150 feet above sea level, and each of them yields stunning sea views in all directions. The minute you step onto Bryher, you sense the strong community connection. Children run free and local produce stalls abound. You can, for example sample “lobster dogs” and freshly prepared crab at Pender’s Island Fish. Or why

not stop for a leisurely lunch at Fraggle Rock, buy some delicious goodies at Bryher Shop or head out for dinner at the fabulous, multi-awardwinning Hell Bay Hotel? You can hire kayaks and sailing dinghies, equip yourself with fishing gear, or simply wander the island and admire the natural environment and local artists at work. From the campsite to the Hell Bay Hotel, and the B&Bs and myriad self-catering options in between, there’s somewhere to stay for every taste and budget.

ST. AGNES

Wild and wonderful St. Agnes is home to just 80 people. Small working farms and an abundance of creative talent ensure that this wonderful island on the edge of Scilly not only survives, but thrives! Together with neighbouring Gugh, which is separated by a sandbar only at high tide, St. Agnes is Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most south-westerly community. It is also the only inhabited island in the archipelago to be separated by a deep-water channel. (The other islands were, long ago, a single land mass.) This independent character remains even today. Its remoteness is also the perfect location for Scillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hugely successful and globally significant Seabird Recovery Project. Just last September, the island witnessed the first Storm petrel chick to be bred on Scilly in living memory, a year after the first Manx shearwater chick hatched in 2014. Every time you turn a corner there is another amazing view to enjoy, from rugged, gorsecovered cliff-tops and hidden coves to white sandy beaches with impossibly blue waters. VICTORIA GRAY S MAGAZINE, SUNDAY EXPRESS

St. Agnes’ natural beauty is undisputed. The wilderness of Santa Warna Cove, the sculpted rocks that dot Wingletang Down, Beady Pool, and Castella Down, home to the circular maze of rounded beach stones, all have stories of old to be told. The fabulously undulating cricket field also speaks of past legend, with shipwreck victims thought to be buried under the chamomile lawns. Periglis is a shell collector’s paradise with views across to Annet, the Western Rocks and Bishop Rock Lighthouse, whilst if you head across to Gugh, go seek the Old Man – a standing stone 9ft tall, believed to be associated with Bronze Age rituals.

Perhaps St. Agnes’ most prominent landmark is the lighthouse, which was built in 1680 by Trinity House with copper lamps and 21 revolving reflectors. Today it is a private house and simply serves as a daymark for shipping. The church is also worth visiting particularly to admire the stunning stained glass windows depicting the island’s brave seamen. They were designed and created by Oriel Hicks, a celebrated fused and stained glass artist based on St. Mary’s. So walk, seek and enjoy. Visit Troytown Farm & Dairy for a delicious ice cream (you can stay on the farm too!). Tuck in to lunch at the Turks Head, enjoy a cream tea at the Covean or Coastguards Cafés and treat yourself to an evening meal at eateries across the island.

WHY THE WHALES CAME If you ever do go to the Isles of Scilly, go over to Samson and look round for yourself. The old ruined cottages are still there, a mound of limpet shells outside each one; and you’ll find the well full of water. Elegant wines and real ales Scilly boasts two family-run vineyards – one on St. Martin’s and one on St. Mary’s. The harvesting of grapes begins in October, and wine making continues throughout the winter months – sorting, de-stalking, fermenting, filtering and bottling. “Over there”, says a man with good eyesight and excellent binoculars. We turn to where he’s pointing and, as the sun begins to set across the seas around the Isles of Scilly, we see them. A flock of around 50-60 Manx shearwaters is coming in to roost. We’re on a special boat trip to see them – and a host of other wonderful bird life that lives on the islands. Whether you’re a keen birdwatcher, or like me, just an occasional viewer of Springwatch, the Isles of Scilly are a great place to see some of Britain’s most exotic and beautiful bird life. Greenshanks, wheatears, sandpipers and flycatchers all come through here. The spring and autumn are the best times to see migrating birds. More than 50 years ago, my father, Mervyn Southam, then a very keen, young birdwatcher, came to St. Agnes each year to help ring the migrating birds. This helps scientists keep track of how long the birds lived and where they travelled. So I grew up hearing tales of sun-drenched weeks spent on St. Agnes, ringing birds, chatting to other birders and drinking in the peace of the place. Now, half a century later, I’m on a pilgrimage to see what my father was talking about.

UNINHABITED BY HUMANS Monitoring seabird populations on the uninhabited island of Pednbrose, north of Te채n.

There are plenty of boat trips around the islands specifically aimed at bird enthusiasts and less knowledgeable people like me. As the sun sets, we see flocks of puffins bobbing about on the waters, in their smart livery, looking for all the world like very, very small avian butlers out on the town. There are shags, gannets, razorbills, even a crane that’s taken up residence on the island of Annet. The excitement and interest of an evening boat trip like this is that you don’t know what you’re going to see next, but when you do see it, someone knowledgeable will explain it to you. But the Manx shearwaters are the big draw. The reason is simple: two years ago we wouldn’t have been able to see them. They weren’t here any more. But now they are the main event. The Manx shearwaters have spent the day, or perhaps longer, out fishing at sea and are full of food for their young. If they head back to their burrows – for these are ground-nesting birds – individually, they are likely to be mobbed by gulls in a bid to get them to regurgitate their food. So, as this isn’t what any Manx shearwater wants, they foregather in a flock, known as a raft, just before dark out on sea. There is, after all, safety in numbers. That’s where the man with the binoculars spots them. Their flight is astonishing. They are the Jenson Buttons of the bird world: hugging the curves of the waves, just centimetres above the sea, following the waves, landing, resting, flying again, swooping on and on until it is time to head for home. When they judge that the gulls will have given up and gone home to roost, the raft of shearwaters rises up from the waves as one, and heads for the tussocky slopes of St. Agnes, which they call home. You’ve got to love the Manx shearwater. First, it’s got a daft name (Puffinus puffinus). Second, it does an annual 20,000-mile migration to South America, which is a long way for a small bird. And finally, it always returns to the same burrow to breed, knowing where it is by the alignment of the stars. Seriously, that’s true. The parent birds head back for the sunshine of South America in September leaving their chick alone in the burrow. It stands at the edge for about eight days, flapping its wings, building up strength and looking at the stars. This is the way it gets a fix on its location and will know its way home in the future.

It’s a fantastic bird. And it has been nesting on the Isles of Scilly for at least 2,000 years. You could safely say it was a long-term resident. But one thing this amazing little bird can’t cope with is rats. And there were rats on the islands of St. Agnes and Gugh, whose ancestors probably arrived on a shipwreck. This spelt trouble for the Manx shearwater, and another ground-nesting bird, the Storm petrel, whose eggs and chicks were repeatedly munched by the rats. Numbers fell and fell. In the end it looked like the Manx shearwater was doomed. But the community spirit of the islanders was the solution. The Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project was set up to save the birds. Jaclyn Pearson worked with the 84 locals on St. Agnes and Gugh, who all worked hard to make the islands less attractive for rats. Farmers cleaned out sheds and barns and made changes in how feed was stored. New, sturdy refuse bins were supplied to every household. All 11 children at the school on St. Agnes were taught about rats and Manx shearwaters. Then for three weeks in November 2013 bait boxes were put out and inspected daily. There was even a “Rat on a Rat” emergency

phone hotline to call if you’d seen a rat. The plan worked. Last year in 2015, some 28 Manx shearwater chicks fledged, three times the number of the year before. And five Storm petrel chicks fledged on the islands: the first to do so in living memory. “It was so emotional last year when they had chicks,” says Peter Exley, the RSPB’s public affairs manager for the South West of England, who helped set up the project. “It was a rare moment. Conservation is a long, hard slog. But this was a peachy moment when you feel you have done something.” There’s a real sense of pride among the community about what’s been achieved. Rightly so. After all, there is archaeological evidence of Manx shearwaters on the islands dating back to 2,000 BC. By the 13th Century, they were so common that they were used as currency. So, the shearwaters are as much a part of the islands as fabulously good ice cream, or beautiful white beaches. But, without the islanders and the Isles of Scilly Seabird Recovery Project, their future was in jeopardy. Now, locals are celebrating the return of the Manx shearwaters and the tiny Storm petrel, which is the size of a sparrow and the smallest sea bird in the world. Farmer Fran Hicks has had a bird-ringing

license for many years and so has kept an eye on the numbers of migratory birds. “In the 1950s we would catch and ring hundreds of shearwaters,” he says. “Recently there have been hardly any. This project has been the salvation of the Manx shearwaters. ‘They are splendid birds, miraculous,” he enthuses. ‘They are part of our wild Britain.” John Peacock, a local boatman agrees. He sees the changing numbers and varieties of birds around the islands as he takes people from one island to another. “It’s a really, really big success story,” he says. “And other birds have benefitted too, like the razorbills and guillemots. There are big numbers of them now. It was a really big undertaking, but I feel really good about it. I’m seeing more and more birds on the boat now.” And so are we. The sun has now set beyond the horizon and the last splashes of red, gold and amber are thrown up into the sky and mirrored on the dark sea. We head home, delighted at everything we’ve seen. It’s been a beautiful evening. The sun shone. The birds all turned up and did their thing. But more than that, we can go back into the harbour knowing that the local community has secured the future of its bird life. That’s great news for the birds, the islanders and for all of us, who stand on the side of a boat amazed at what we’re seeing.

This chick, alone from its parents who have already migrated to the coast of Brazil for the winter, is warming and exercising its wings in darkness, and staring at the stars to get a fix on its location. Once mature, it will live out at sea, also migrating to South America in winter. But every spring, it will return home to Scilly, its natal colony, for years to come.

AS FRESH AS THE SEA Being a chef on Scilly is the best experience I’ve ever had. It’s challenging and exciting in equal measure! I especially love to work with fish, freshly caught by local fishermen. They head out to sea pre-dawn, and deliver their catch to my kitchen door every day at 9am. My favourite? Mackerel: every day. I have never tasted anything as good as Scilly mackerel. The clear coastal waters here give it a texture and firmness that I have experienced nowhere else before. Cooking with mackerel is a joy, just wrap in foil – ideally on the barbecue on a beach! Keep it simple: a few herbs, maybe some garlic butter or just plain lemon, smoked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper will bring the natural flavours alive. Once cooked through, remove the foil and place them on a large serving dish (or a piece of driftwood!), drizzle with olive oil, lashings of lemon juice, season well, and serve straight away!

garden. Red squirrels have been introduced recently and are proving a great success with visitors. They scamper about the whole island treating visitors to a glimpse of a bushy tail as they search for the nuts of the Monterey pine and often-exotic tasting flowers as a prelude to their main course! Their numbers have now doubled and it is a very rare day that visitors will not see at least one or two going about their daily business feeding themselves or their young. There is no public transport on the off-islands, although your accommodation provider will meet you on your arrival and transfer you to where you are staying. There are golf buggies available to hire on a daily basis (age 25-75 years; driving licence required) on Tresco and St. Mary's. There is also a ‘Buzza Bus’ service on St. Mary’s, however those entitled to use this service must be registered with Cornwall’s Age Concern, and unable to use other accessible private hire vehicles.
