FOREWORD BY MICHAEL MORPURGO, FORMER CHILDREN’S LAUREATE, AND AUTHOR OF WAR HORSE Scilly is used to migrants, or visitors, or invaders, or blow-ins, call us what you will. For explorers and sailors and birds and tourists this has been over the centuries a place of refuge, a welcome safe haven. Sometimes one of these blow-ins stays and becomes in time a Scillonian, finds a home here. Then there are others who blow in from time to time throughout their lives and become almost Scillonian. Certainly they feel a sense of belonging. My wife Clare is one of those. She first came here when she was two in 1944; faced down the U boats to get here. Back she came every year for a while. Pentle Bay was her playground, where she first saw oystercatchers and heard their piping. Back she came with her children and her husband (who it has to be said did not want to come; how could I get my café au lait and croissants on this scattering of islands in the Atlantic?) Back we come with grandchildren and friends, time and again. She reads avidly while she’s here, I scribble my stories, one or two of them set here. We walk, we talk. Every footpath on Bryher we know. We know where the best blackberries are, where the oystercatchers gather before dusk. We’re on Rushy Bay in wind or sun and look out to Samson and think of how it was to live there all those years ago, to row out there in a gig in the teeth of a gale to rescue people (and cows) from a wreck. We stomp over to Hell Bay to get blown and buffeted about. We have tea at Fraggle Rock, buy a crab for supper from Mr and Mrs Pender, and then as the evening sun goes down (or the evening wind blows) sit on a rock on Green Bay and are content.

One ship’s peril is a wreck diver’s dream. Did you know there are more shipwrecks around the Isles of Scilly than anywhere else in the world? Dangerous rocks, and our wild winter weather have both contributed to a perilous part in Scilly’s history. Hell Bay really does exist! To this day, the Bishop Rock, Round Island and Penninis Head lighthouses, as well as striking day marks, keep passing vessels on the right course.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARRIVE? Bustling quays and busy airports can seem a challenge even when the welcome is as friendly as the one you get when the Scillonian docks or Skybus lands. We know you’ve not truly arrived on any holiday until you and, just as importantly, your luggage, are over the doorstep and into the room! So here's a guide to let you know how it all works on Scilly. Let’s start with our charming – even unique – airport that stands atop a hill on St Mary’s. During high season, it handles more than 400 flights a week. And while it might sound overconfident to say it runs like clockwork, it does.

First, a pleasant surprise — your luggage appears almost as quickly as you do. If you’re staying on St. Mary’s, the team of taxi drivers will simply ask you where you’re booked in to stay and will take you there. This isn’t free but it’s not expensive or complicated either – a small flat rate will get you there and back at the end of your holiday. They’ll ask you when you’re booked on the flight back and fix to pick you up an hour before from where they’re dropping you off. They’re good at it, they’ve been doing it for years. If you’re staying on Bryher, St. Martin’s or St. Agnes tell the taxi driver and he will take you to the quay and point you at the right boat and the right skipper. On your chosen island you will be met and taken to the door of where you’ve booked. Ask your accommodation

TRAVEL INFORMATION Skybus has regular flights to St. Mary’s (Scilly’s main island) from Land’s End, Newquay and Exeter airports. A shuttle bus operates to and from Land's End airport and Penzance Railway Station should you require it. You will fly in either the 8-seater Islander or 17-seater Twin Otter. There is plenty of parking at all airports, and a dedicated Scilly Park & Ride service in Penzance.

The Scillonian III passenger ferry operates six days a week from March to November (seven in high season) from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly. Although tides occasionally dictate travel times, generally speaking the boat leaves Penzance at 9.15am, arriving in St. Mary’s just before noon, and leaves St. Mary’s at 4.30pm arriving back in Penzance just after 7pm.

SO WHAT HAPPENS AT THE QUAY? Just like the airport, it’s busy but it all works. If you’re staying on St. Mary’s, clearly labelled luggage will be delivered to your accommodation. Check with the driver or your accommodation provider to fix the return pick-up of your luggage. If you’re staying on an off island it’s oddly even easier. The boat services from each of those islands will be there to meet you. Your luggage will be transferred seamlessly from the Scillonian on to the correct island boat for the trip across. You'll be given handy colour-coded labels on the quayside at Penzance, to ensure that your luggage gets to the right island – red for St. Martin’s, blue for Tresco, yellow for St. Agnes and green for Bryher. Listen out on board the Scillonian as you near the islands for the departure times of these off island boats as, depending on the tides, they may all leave at slightly different times – but always not long after you dock. What about the weather? Nothing we can do about that but occasionally these

If this is your first visit, the boating system may seem a little daunting but you’ll soon get the hang of it. Basically you have all the tripper boats of St. Mary’s largely run by the St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association. Additionally, St. Agnes, Bryher (operating for Bryher and Tresco) and St. Martin’s all operate their own boat services offering trips and excursions, as well as regular water taxi services from their bases to all the other islands. And then there is a handful of specialist independent operators.

There are timetables chalked on boards at every turn, and many of the operators have their own Facebook pages and Twitter feeds letting you know the boat times. Tides mean that this isn’t like running a bus service, so always check. The good news is that all this flexibility means that the options are almost endless.

Between them they run literally hundreds of trips a week – full day and half day trips to a plethora of islands. There are trips to see the seals and seabirds, to Bishop Rock Lighthouse, to the uninhabited islands where you can get dropped sometimes – and picked up too of course! And evening excursions on the “supper boats” that allow you to sample the pubs and restaurants of all the islands. All in all, Scilly’s boatmen make for a remarkable combination of island hopping capability, expertise and experience. ST. MARY’S BOATMEN’S ASSOCIATION The large “tripper boats” which grace St. Mary’s Quay and take visitors on daily trips and tours operate under the banner of St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association. There are 10 boats in total – Britannia, Golden Spray, Guiding Star, Kingfisher, Meridian, Osprey, Sapphire, Seahorse, Sea King and Surprise – all very beautiful and all steeped in the islands’ rich maritime history. The Association was established in 1958 when a number of passenger boat operators – all vying to attract the same trade – decided to work together. The collaboration continues to this day.

Each boat is still individually owned and each skipper remains totally responsible for his own boat. If you’re planning a day out to one of the islands, simply head down to the St. Mary’s Boatmen Association kiosk located at the near end of the main quay (next to the Old Quay) or to one of the many ticket outlets (shops and hotels) in town. If the kiosk happens to be closed, you can just as easily purchase your tickets on the boats. There’s no need to book for a particular trip. Association tickets can be used on any of their services and if one trip is particularly popular they’ll just bring in another boat to help out.

THE OFF ISLAND BOAT SERVICES The inhabited islands beyond St. Mary’s – St. Agnes, Bryher, St. Martin’s and Tresco – are known locally as the “off islands”. Each requires its regular services both for the islanders who live there and for the holidaymakers staying on them. So if you’re staying on an off island, you’ll be able to make use of their local boating companies – Bryher Boats (serving both Bryher and Tresco), St. Agnes Boating, and services on St. Martin’s. They run similar style trips to those on St. Mary’s – so island hopping can start and finish wherever you’re based. They also provide daily taxi services as well as scheduled trips. Everything is interconnected, making sure that locals and visitors have their every need well catered for.

SPECIALIST BOAT OPERATORS As well as the big boat operators across the islands, there are many smaller

players. They offer a whole raft of specialist trips – day-long cruises, fishing trips, high-octane sea safaris or sedate glass-bottomed discoveries. Crusader is one such example; an independentlyoperated boat based on St. Mary’s that provides specialist excursions with a more personalised service for smaller parties.

KNOWING WHAT’S ON AND WHEN During the summer, Scilly is buzzing with boats. There is barely a moment when any quay is quiet, whichever island you’re on. Finding out what’s on and where to go is easy. Every morning, just before 9:15am, Radio Scilly (107.9FM) announces the trips of the day, whilst the Visitor Information Point on Porthcressa Beach also has up-to-the-minute news. If social media is more your thing, then you’ll be pleased to note that virtually all the boatmen are now on Facebook and Twitter too. With St. Agnes Boating you can even pre-book online.

LANDFALL Just before dawn the Atlantic was grey, the horizon a razor-cut line unbroken by land. The last of a thousand dolphins did the last high, twisting jump. The sun came bouncing out of the eastern rim of the world, flooding the sea with deep, oceanic blue. Under it lay suddenly a low line of islands. The swells rolled south and east, battering Round Island, crunching on Men-a-Vaur, boiling in the black teeth of the Kettle. Then we were into the channel, and the scent of honeysuckle was pouring warm as motherhood off the flanks of Bryher. The swell was dying as we slid though the reflection of Cromwell’s Castle and rounded up. A flap and collapse of sails, and the anchor towed a white plume of bubbles into twenty feet of clean green water. A crab strolled over to inspect it, plain as your hand in front of your face. The swells were making dull concussions in the outer rocks. Here in the channel the water ebbed glassy past the hull. The colours went from blue through green, shallowed to West Indies turquoise, then paled into sandbanks that heaved themselves above the surface as the tide sank, making runways for scolding oystercatchers. Down there was St. Mary’s, with everything for the cruising yachtsman. To hell with it. Grasping the net firmly, I rowed under the fierce white sun to the empty beach where the terns were diving. We were back on Scilly, and it was time to go shrimping.

ST. MARY’S LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DISCOVERED! LIFE AT AN EASIER PACE STARTS HERE

St. Mary’s is the Isles of Scilly’s largest island. Covering an area less than 2.5 square miles, it is an island of colour and contrast that also acts as the major gateway to and from the mainland and to the "off islands". It’s also where 1,800 of the 2,200 island residents live. Hugh Town serves as the central hub, nestling as it does on a sandy isthmus between two beaches with its cluster of shops, banks, churches, post office, cafés, galleries, restaurants, pubs and the imposing Town Hall. Here you will also find the wonderful museum – a real gem and a multi-faceted introduction to everything on the islands. The island's community tends to converge on Hugh Town for family events, fundraisers and a good night out! Town Beach is a great vantage point looking across the bay to the Quay. Porthcressa on the other side, boasts a lovely new promenade with sheltered seating, gardens, a children’s play park and the new Visitor Information Point. Around the corner from Hugh Town, St. Mary’s Quay is always busy with daily activity – as colourful tripper boats to and fro across the water to the other islands, sailors and fishermen come and go, and islanders set their watches to the daily arrival and departure of the Scillonian III. With only 6 miles of road and more than 30 miles of paths and nature trails (10 of them coastal) away from the gentle

hubbub of Hugh Street and the Quay, St. Mary’s is an easy-going safe haven of hidden treasures… The Garrison is the heavily fortified headland surrounding Star Castle; the frontline of England’s defences since the 16th Century. It is accessed via the Garrison Gate, an original arched gateway which dates back to 1742 – or, if you can find it, Sally Port, a low passageway squirrelled within the thick defensive walls designed to defend against surprise attacks on the Garrison. A popular walk around the defences yields panoramic views of all the islands. Young children will also love the Pirate Ship play park and freedom to run on the Garrison field – host to the world’s smallest football league!

St. Mary’s offers the most in terms of island adventure. A great way to explore the wilder landscapes and escape "up country" is on foot. If you don’t fancy the walk you can hire a bike or a golf buggy, or book a tour on the Island Rover or catch the Community Bus. You can also horse-ride around much of St. Mary’s or set off on the water. First stop might be the Lifeboat Station at the far end of Town Beach which displays paintings, models and many accounts of past rescues. Next door, Porthmellon Beach is popular with families and provides all the kit for windsurfing, sailing and kayaking alongside traditional six-oar pilot gig boats dating back to 1830. Opposite the beach you’ll find a host of art and craft studios and the whole area is protected by Harry’s Walls, the remains of uncompleted fortifications from 1551. Then make for the hills – via the truly secluded Carreg Dhu Garden, a wonderful spot to seek solitude amongst beautiful exotic plants – to McFarland’s Down to view the ancient Iron Age and Romano-British settlements at Bant’s Carn and Halangy Down. Further along the coast path you’ll reach the amazing Bronze Age tombs at Innisidgen just above the breathtaking Bar Point, which stretches toward St. Martin’s and Tresco and the site of a former causeway between the islands. Then meander on past Isles of Scilly Flowers at Trenoweth to Watermill Cove and Pelistry Bay where you can walk at low tide, “Famous Five” style, across to Toll's Island for a mini-adventure. Porth Hellick Bay epitomises much of Scilly with its nature trail that stretches back to the tiny hamlet of Holy Vale, amazing rock formations and its sheltered beach. It lays claim to the aptly named “loaded camel” rock and the memorial to Sir Cloudesley Shovel, the Admiral of the Fleet whose body was washed ashore here in 1707. As you head back on the circular tour, you’ll reach Old Town, a beautifully enclosed sandy bay flanked on one side by Old Town Church. It still holds Evensong services by candlelight, whilst the graveyard is dominated by a memorial to Augustus Smith, founder of Tresco Abbey Garden and the final resting place of former British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. The pub, shop, artist studios and cafés also make Old Town an ideal base for a holiday. A short coastal walk around the headland from here back towards Hugh Town takes you out to Peninnis Lighthouse, and austere rock formations such as Pulpit Rock, Tooth Rock and the "sleeping giant". Finally, you can wrap up the tour at the Buzza Tower just above Porthcressa Beach – once a windmill, now a museum of curiosities with a camera obscura that provides incredible panoramic views.

If you walk the coastal path, you can climb the seven hills of Bryher in just over five miles. Although the total climb is nearly 1,000 feet in total, none of the “hills” rises more than 150 feet above sea level. Yet all yield stunning sea views in all directions. St. Agnes is a thriving community of working farms, creative flair and a proud, proactive island intent on maintaining its reputation for romance and resourcefulness. The island also boasts one of the best views from a pub garden anywhere in the UK, with campsite views not far behind! Together with neighbouring Gugh, separated by a sandbar only at high tide, St. Agnes is Britain’s most south-westerly community. When all the other islands were connected as a single land mass, a deep channel separated St. Agnes from St. Mary’s. This feeling of independence remains even today. You’ll notice straight away the island’s most notable landmark – the lighthouse,

which was built in 1680 by Trinity House with copper lamps and 21 revolving reflectors. Today it is a private house and simply serves as a daymark for shipping. On your travels, you’ll come across Beady Pool or the cricket pitch where legends tell of shipwreck victims buried under the chamomile lawns. We also recommend you sneak a peek at the tiny church’s striking, newly-commissioned stainedglass window. Then head off in search of the circular maze of rounded beach stones on the west side of Castella Down, rumoured to have been built by a lighthouse keeper centuries ago. Periglis meanwhile, is a shell collector’s paradise with views across to Annet, the Western Rocks and Bishop Rock Lighthouse. Check out the sculptured rocks and cairns that dot Wingletang Down, and then head for Gugh to find the Old Man – a standing stone 9ft tall, believed to be associated with Bronze Age rituals. And don’t even think about leaving before tasting the delicious ice-creams from the Troytown Farm and Dairy! You can also sample the delights of the island's restaurants, cafés, farm stalls and an impressively-stocked grocery store. And of course the pub, The Turks Head, is Britain's most South Westerly pub and is also perhaps the only one in the world where you can hear shearwaters on your walk home. They call them the sirens of the sea – the souls of lost sailors returned.

There are many of us who freely admit to being truly, madly, deeply in love with Scilly. The islands have worked their way into our hearts over the years and today we are utterly smitten. Why? First, there’s the sheer beauty and peace of the landscapes and seascapes. Next, there is the islands’ unmistakable atmosphere, one that strikes an easy balance between familiarity and otherness. Then there’s their rich cultural mix, a combination of 21st-century loveliness and the security of tradition. Finally, all this is heightened by the knowledge that these low-lying islands are mere dots in the middle of the wide sea. It’s no wonder they are so enchanting. Sometimes, when on Scilly, it is enough to just observe and absorb what’s around you. At other times you feel like exploring, and it is for those moments of discovery that we have gathered together a few thoughts about some of the people and places that make the Isles of Scilly so special.

SCILLY GARDENS An abundance of planting and an unparalleled intensity of colour will strike you as you wander through Tresco Abbey Garden and marvel at the huge banks of lime-green succulents, towering spires of echium and fluffy drifts of agapanthus.

The garden’s sub-tropical specimens, which were gathered from around the world but flourish despite the sea spray and Atlantic gales, are much discussed and photographed, but to see them for yourself, dazzling in the summer sunshine, is different again. In other seasons there is plenty to see, too; in fact the planting is so varied that there is a steady succession of blooms all year round. Don’t miss the haunting Valhalla figureheads that hide amid the garden, a reminder of the ships that have come to grief in the treacherous Scillonian waters.

CREATIVE SCILLY A bike is positively the best way to explore Tresco and, as you circle the island, be sure to stop off at Gallery Tresco in New Grimsby. Here, via a rolling programme of exhibitions from February to November, you will see how the islands have inspired numerous artists to find expression in sculpture, ceramics, painting and more. All offer a new perspective on Scilly in all its moods. Highlights include the dreamy landscapes of Andrew Tozer and John Bampfield, and the naïve simplicity of seascapes by Emma Jeffryes; there’s a touching realism, too, about Geoffrey Bickley’s carved wooden birds, which are fashioned from driftwood and inspired by wildlife on the islands’ shores. Another facet of Scilly’s artistic community is on show at the Phoenix Craft Workshop and Gallery on St. Mary’s. Take a ten-minute walk from Hugh Town, heading to Porthmellon, and you’ll come across a co-operative of five small creative businesses. The studio was set up in 1991 by stained-glass artist Oriel Hicks, whose commissioned windows you might already have spotted around the islands, notably in the churches on Bryher and St. Agnes. A visit to Phoenix is a good chance to stock up on gifts to take home to the mainland – think Oriel’s

fused glass jewellery, atmospheric paintings and prints by Imogen Bone, marine-inspired screen prints and linocuts by Vickie Heaney. And, if you feel inclined to get creative yourself, Phoenix offers regular craft workshops so you can return home with a new-found skill. Hop over to St. Martin’s for two more creative inspirations that are uniquely Scilly – the exquisite jewellery of Fay Page and the lovely converted barn that’s North Farm Gallery. Here, in Higher Town, you will find collections of many local artists in many different media. Look out for Sue Lewington’s iconic and much loved watercolours and books, and the evocative stoneware pottery of Caroline Gillett – both inspired by lives lived on Scilly. Down at Lower Town Fay and her husband Rob Davis fashion covetable gold and silver mementoes of Scilly, from cowrie shells and starfish to flowers and boats, and make them into an enticing array of rings, necklaces, charms and earrings. All are displayed in their studio and workshop amongst local finds such as re-purposed gig paddles and cabinets made from old boat timbers. MAKING MEMORIES chapter beginning – beach-based activities were now a possibility; endless swimming and beachcombing and salt-encrusted hair became part of the holiday tradition and I decided to come over to work at Juliet’s Garden for the summer. I realised that summer that I wasn’t alone in being a Scilly-phile, there were plenty of others out there also over to work and play for the summer. Some of those fellow Scillyphiles of 1990 are still good friends today, some, like me, have settled here and there are those who still return annually. Some drift back occasionally in between travels for their fix – there is no denying that Scilly can just captivate you and once it does you have to return.

We always visited in late October and I still can’t smell crisped bracken or sweet blackberries without being transported back to those childhood holidays. For the fifty weeks that I wasn’t on Scilly I genuinely pined for the place, my teenage bedroom was a shrine to the islands – postcards, photos, a ship’s bell, pot buoys and endless pebbles dotted around. School friends thought I was obsessed and my English teacher told me in no uncertain terms that my next GCSE assignment must not be about Scilly – again. I agreed and smugly wrote about the ‘journey’ to Scilly instead, detailing the over-night drive with our duvets in the car and the heady excitement when we hit Penzance in the early hours and saw the palm trees – we certainly didn’t have palm trees in Yorkshire! The giddiness on reaching the airport after a few hours sleep in the car would be at fever pitch. When we arrived I’d be straight up to the Garrison or up to Penninis to climb my favourite rock or sit for hours looking out to sea. Whatever the weather I was happy to be back in Scilly. After many autumnal trips it came as quite a revelation to visit one August – jeans and jumpers were replaced with bare feet as it felt like we were in the tropics (don’t forget I lived in Yorkshire). I now had a new Scilly

Twenty years on and I live on St. Martin’s with my own family who, despite still being young are already starting to realise what a unique place they’re living in – our walk to school can be along the tiny road or along the beach and the simple things are fascinating – shell searching, sea watching, or sucking the nectar from the sweet honeysuckle. The work that we do as jewellers is greatly influenced by the unusual surroundings; those endless holiday beach finds, mementoes and tokens are what we now create in silver and gold. Our workshop is almost an extension of my teenage Scilly shrine with lots of reclaimed and found objects adorning the studio. In the time I’ve lived here it has been lovely to see teenagers, who first came here as toddlers, spending their summers camping and working, I’m sure we’ll see them again with their own children who will in turn be captivated in just the same way as those before them.

ACTIVE SCILLY It is only by immersing yourself in the clear waters around the islands that you can fully appreciate their richness. No experience is required to go snorkelling with seals, though – an exhilarating and fascinating way to get up close and personal with these elegant creatures in their natural habitat. What a thrill to be swimming with such graceful animals in their own element; this experience will make you feel utterly at one with the ocean. Friendly instructors offer myriad ways to play on the water, from windsurfing and sailing to stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking. The clear shallow waters, sheltered bays and uninhabited shorelines make Scilly a watersports dream, whether you want to have a fun day out withan instructor or follow an accredited course. Experienced paddlers, sailors and windsurfers, meanwhile, can hire all the gear and go it alone. Another fabulous way to stay fit and active while on Scilly is to rent a bike from St. Mary’s Bicycle Hire. Tresco's Ruin Café has to-die-for pizzas with a beach-side terrace to match, whilst the award-winning Hell Bay Hotel on Bryher boasts the mouth-watering pop-up Crab Shack. Over on St. Agnes you’ll find fine ice-cream, butter, milk and yoghurt at Troytown Farm, Scilly’s only dairy producer. Puffins Puffins are the smallest auks that breed in Scilly. They arrive at the end of April and usually leave around mid-July. You might catch a glimpse of them on a boat trip around the uninhabited islands. It is said that the Islanders traditionally paid their rent to the Crown in ‘puffins’ rather than in cash.

Orange Birdsfoot Some of Scilly’s plants are native species - the Dwarf pansy and Orange birdsfoot are found nowhere else in Britain.

Oil Beetle The Oil Beetle has an incredible life cycle. The female digs a hole in the ground and lays eggs. The larvae hatch, climb to the top of a flowering plant and, if very lucky, hitch a ride on a bee. The larvae winter in the bee’s nest feeding on eggs, larvae and honey. After pupating the fully formed beetle leaves the bee’s nest to start the cycle again.

Atlantic Grey Seals Scilly’s resident population of Atlantic Grey seals is one of the most important in Europe. During good weather local tripper boats go to the Eastern Isles and Western Rocks to look at the seals.

Given our stunning environment, it should come as no surprise that the entire Isles of Scilly are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our ancient landscape is constantly changing, yet it has always retained its understated beauty. During the past 10,000 years, rising sea-levels have drowned parts of Scilly, leaving prehistoric field boundaries and settlements visible beneath the sea. Leatherback Turtles Sea turtles are occasionally seen around the Isles of Scilly, normally offshore in deep water. Leatherback turtles may pass by Scilly on their migration routes as they search for shoals of jellyfish. Rarely a turtle gets stranded in Scilly and needs assistance.

Scilly Bee The Scilly Bee is unique to the islands. It is easily recognised because it is the only brown or orange-brown bumblebee in Scilly.

Thrift Thrift – also called sea pink – is common on Scilly’s heathlands. Thrift gets a good foothold on bare rock by penetrating cracks with a long tap-root.

Dolphins Dolphins can sometimes be seen from the Scillonian III ferry and from other boats moving around the islands. Most of the time dolphins are busy feeding but they may decide to play with the boat and do a bit of bow riding.

Ocean Sunfish This bizarre looking fish can sometimes be seen around Scilly during the summer months. Ocean sunfish are one of the largest of all bony fishes. They can weigh up to 1.5 tonnes and reach approximately 2m in size.

Scilly Shrew The Scilly Shrew is not found on the British mainland. The Scilly shrew is, in fact, a subspecies of the lesser white-toothed shrew which, curiously, is not found on the British mainland either.

Eelgrass Plants are important in the underwater world around Scilly. Eelgrass is unusual because it is a type of flowering plant which can reproduce underwater – it has waterproof pollen!

THE CHAMPIONS It’s our annual pilgrimage. Each July, as soon as we have arrived from the mainland on St. Martin’s, we walk round the coast by Perpitch beach to the high cliffs beyond the Day Mark where the fulmars nest. Their chicks are always slow in fledging – so even this late in the summer, if we are fool enough to stand at the very edge of a fifty foot drop to inspect their bare perches in the rocks, we are certain to see the helpless balls of grey down which are the fulmars’ young. Undisturbed, the parents are happy to behave and look like dull gulls and almost get away with it – until they need to fly, that is, until they have to go out hunting for some offal feed, until they have to see off people like us. These are lesser albatrosses in disguise, aggressive birds and capable of snorting noxious spit over anything or anyone that threatens them. But of all the Scilly birds, I think, they are the champions, flying from the shoulders with strong and measured beats and not flapping from the elbows like the feebler gulls. They are a thrilling sight. They have never disappointed us since we first came to Scilly thirty years ago and they will reward us when we come again, next year…

Song Thrush The song thrush is increasingly rare on the mainland but in Scilly there is a very high population of breeding thrushes, possibly 12 times higher than anywhere else in the UK.

Red Barbed Ant Named from the red hairs on its body. First discovered in 1896, it has always been rare.

Feeling Free I remember my first visit; my youngest child Poppy was 10 weeks old, I had over packed, and was over prepared (a hang-up from my short stay in the Brownies). Our intention was to visit once, to explore a part of the country we had never seen. But the magic of these special islands entered our lives, and the white sandy beaches, the unique qualities of the off islands, the quality of light, keep our interest and hold us in their thrall. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think I have been anywhere where I have felt so free. Eight years on and the children are still excited to visit, and sad to leave. According to the youngest, the Easter Bunny is from the islands and there is magic in the sand. As we walk through the lanes, we come across little stalls filled with freshly grown vegetables, eggs, fudge, fish, flowers, and crafts. Really, what is not to love! Early every morning the children get up and run to the nearest stall to buy eggs and freshly picked vegetables. There is always an honesty box to place the money in, and somewhere to return the egg boxes for recycling. A simple but wonderful thing.

Island Medicine When we arrive on the islands, there is always a sense of relief. I remember Sam (aged three) on his second visit, leaping off the boat, and running in the sea and sand, shouting jubilantly ‘I know this place, I know this place!’, as if the Isles of Scilly were in his blood. Here we can experience the simplicity of being away from the rush and chaos of our home lives. The Scillonian beauty, wild and tamed, and the magic of the place fills us, and as we leave, we leave refreshed and invigorated, like we have taken some island medicine. We can’t wait to return.

The Year of the Sandhopper There was the year, or thinking about it, two years where hours were spent on beaches across the islands; the children insistent that we should always take buckets with us - everywhere! By foot, on boats, in shops and cafĂŠs; just in case we were going to the beach, which of course would be our destination. The children, buckets in hand, hurtling down the little lanes to the beach; to sit on the sand, to stare in a strange concentrated way at the ground. There they could be seen filling buckets; with sand? No; with shells? Not this time; with seaweed? No. They filled the buckets with as many sandhoppers as they could find. Once the buckets were full (ish) they would take great pleasure in emptying them. The sandhopper: a little creature, an insect that jumps about, much loved by the kids.

I remember the African Cuckoo resting in the branch of a small tree, almost tame in its confidence; the Egret that we got terribly excited about in the little pool of water; the seals bobbing in the sea by the rocks, at sunset every night. All nature here is abundantly alive and surrounding us. The displays are just for us, because being seemingly alone on the edge of the beach, or walking around really does make you feel like the only people on the islands.

We lost our kids this year. After eight holidays in Scilly we lost them; to the islands, to their friends who live there, for a whole week. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to do with ourselves. Honestly, we pondered for a bit, and then we got on with it. We got our books out, looked, and read and walked and talked; back to being just the two of us, a couple.

Once a year I allow myself to imagine a simpler more beautiful life. I imagine what it is like to live on the islands full-time. I fantasise about moving lock stock and camera equipment to live here. The children would love it, and so would I. Reality makes this impossible so I make do with our magical week in this entrancing place. We only planned on coming here to visit once, as we like change and travel and exploration, but the pull of the place is impossible to resist. It has become part of our mental landscape, part of the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives, so we come back here every year for a week and love it more each time.
