returns for his fifth year after missing all of 2012 due to injury. The 6-3, 240-pounder will provide solid blocking ability and another receiver for Nelson, as he enters the season with 25 career grabs. “I really like our backs,” Glogowski said. “Those kids have all played a lot of football for us, from Chia, to Calvert, to Kenny. McCulley and Bevins need to support the run game and be viable pass threats.” The offensive line will have to fill holes left by three starters from a year ago, but have a big, solid nucleus returning. Senior Patrick Thompson will lead the group after earning second team all-conference honors at right tackle a year ago. Junior Nathan Christian started all 10 games at left guard, helping the line allow a league-low 11 sacks in Iowa Conference play. “Up front we will be young, but athletic,” Glogowski said. “It is one of the biggest o-lines we have had and I expect them to improve over the course of the year.”

DEFENSE

Simpson returns four starters on defense, although that number isn’t an accurate portrayal of the amount of experience coming back.

The pendulum is swinging in the right direction for the Simpson Storm football team in 2013. After bursting on the scene with seven wins in Jim Glogowski’s first year as head coach in 2008, Simpson went 5-15 over the next two seasons. But the team gained momentum with a 5-5 mark in 2011 and went 6-4 a year ago, setting the stage for more optimism and higher standers in 2013. “It takes senior leadership,” Glogowski said of keeping the program moving in the right direction. “We need to lead by example and the program needs to grow. How we practice on a daily basis and how we prepare for each opponent will determine what happens on Saturday afternoon.” The team was close to breaking through last year, as three of the four losses came by a combined 16 points. Signature wins over Wartburg and Central provided optimism, but a big loss against Coe provided room for improvement. “[To get to the next level] we need to stay healthy, we need to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves, we need to take it one week at a time and we need to have a few bounces go our way,” he said. The Storm return 33 letterwinners and 11 starters from last season’s squad that finished tied for second in the Iowa Conference with a 4-3 mark in league play.

OFFENSE

Offensive coordinator Joe Beschorner’s unit returns a number of key pieces from a group that put up more than 400 yards per game in 2012. Headlining the returners is First Team All-West Region performer and preseason All-American, Brad Vogel (pictured). The speedy Vogel is one of the most explosive players in the nation, averaging more than 220 all-purpose yards per game as a receiver, returner and running back in 2012. He led the Iowa Conference with 81 catches for 1,116 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns as a slot receiver

and gained 165 yards on 12 carries out of the backfield. Seniors Mike Kuhn – a 2011 honorable mention all-conference pick – and Ryan Olson will assist Vogel with pass-catching duties. “I love our receiving corps,” Glogowski said. “Vogel is one of the top receivers in the league and Kuhn had a great summer, so we will rely a lot on him. There are also opportunities for guys who have been in the program to step up, as we certainly like to throw the ball around.” The man in charge of getting Vogel & Company the ball is three-year starter and second team all-conference quarterback, Taylor Nelson. The senior already owns school records for passing completions, pass attempts and total offense and looks to improve upon his 25-touchdown, 13-interception campaign a year ago. He threw for 3,030 yards and also proved to be a threat on the ground with 214 yards and six touchdowns. “Taylor will be a leader for us and needs to play like a four-year starter,” Glogowski said of his quarterback. The Storm have a deep stable of running backs with plenty of game experience, led by three-year starter, Michael Chia. A senior, Chia suffered a season-ending injury in week five last season, but is back in full swing this year. Junior Ethan Calvert led the team with 278 rushing yards a year ago, while junior Tyler Kenny provided 237 yards. When Simpson uses two backs, senior Jared Bevins is the incumbent at fullback. A solid blocking back, Bevins is also a capable pass catcher out of the backfield. Senior tight end Jake McCulley

“The perception is that we graduated everybody, and we did lost some quality seniors off the 2012 team,” Glogowski said of his defense. “But we also have 23 seniors this season and several on defense that played a lot last year.” The defensive line provided a big spark for the Storm in 2012, contributing 28.5 of the team’s 31 sacks. A key part of that was the play of junior end Johnnie Sims, who earned honorable mention all-conference honors after tying for the team lead with seven sacks. Senior David Adams is the top returner on the interior after tallying 4.5 sacks a year ago. Senior end Clay Finley, senior tackle Aaron Gaynor and junior tackle Alex Severn were all a part of the regular rotation and should help cause problems for opposing teams at the point of attack. “I really like our athleticism up front,” Glogowski said. “Finley and Sims are guys that really have good athleticism and should be solid for us. Adams is a big, strong tackle along with Severn. I expect those two to provide toughness in the middle.” The linebacking corps will have a different look after the departure of starters Mark Cronin and DJ Bennett. But junior Brandon Abernathy and senior Dillan Hamilton should fill the holes on the outside, joining senior middle linebacker, Ted Haag. The 6-0, 230-pound Haag is a veteran of Glogowski’s scheme and will provide leadership as one of the defensive team captains. “Haag is a fifth-year guy and really understands what’s expected of him,” Glogowski said. “Abernathy is poised to break out this fall and Hamilton has been patiently waiting for his opportunity and should not disappoint.” The secondary is an area of opportunity for Simpson in 2012 with open competition at almost all positions. Senior cornerback Corey Sterling has the most game experience after making six starts and 24 tackles in 2012 and senior Sean DeGoey is the lead candidate to step into one of the safety positions. DeGoey appeared in eight games and made 13 tackles a year ago.

honors a year ago. A two-time, first team all-conference performer,Vogel returned 32 kicks for 818 yards – highlighted by a 93-yarder for a touchdown against Eureka – and 11 punts for 104 yards. A pair of kickers saw action for Simpson in 2012. Strong-footed junior Logan Klein led the Iowa Conference with 18 touchbacks and helped Simpson lead the league in kickoff coverage while averaging 41.1 yards per punt. He made 22 of 27 extra point attempts and went 3-for-7 in field goals. Senior Brian Schaaf got in on the placekicking action at the end of the season, making 8 of 9 extra points but going 0-for-3 in field goal attempts. “I feel good about both kickers we have back and Vogel has the ability to be a game-breaker in the return game,” Glogowski said.

Simpson kicks off the season by welcoming Iowa Wesleyan to Division III football. The Tigers – a provisional member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference – make the move from NAIA, where they went 3-8 a year ago.

The Storm travel to St. Peter in the hopes of avenging last year’s disappointing, turnover-riddled 35-26 loss at home. The Gusties finished 3-7 overall, 2-6 in the MIAC and have endured four straight losing seasons.

Taylor Nelson threw for 398 yards and Brad Vogel scored three touchdowns as Simpson won last year’s season-opener, 31-22 in Wisconsin. River Falls finished 2-8 last season and hasn’t had a winning season since 2000.

Simpson will have an extra week to prepare for Wartburg with the bye coming on Sept. 28. The Storm are coming off of backto-back wins over the Knights, including last year’s 20-19 thriller in Indianola. The Knights went 6-4 in 2012.

It’s homecoming weekend in Indianola as Simpson welcomes the Dutch to Buxton Stadium. Simpson ran for 152 yards and won last year’s matchup, 21-18 in Pella. Central finished the season 5-5.

Tyler Kenny ran for 132 yards, Simpson ran for 193 as a team and the Storm handled Loras 28-7 at home in 2012. The Duhawks boast 11 returning starters looking to improve upon last year’s 2-8 finish.

Simpson was 5-1 and riding high before suffering a 47-7 homecoming loss to the eventual conference champion Kohawks last year. Coe returns seven starters led by preseason All-American, offensive lineman, Nathan Yelton.

Despite a record 40 completions by Taylor Nelson, Dubuque won a 45-40 shootout last season after building a 38-6 lead in the third quarter. The Spartans went 5-5 last year but must replace 2012 IIAC Offensive MVP, quarterback Wyatt Hanus.

Simpson recovered an onside kick in the final minute but just missed a field goal as time expired in a 29-27 loss in 2012. Brad Vogel set a school record with 20 catches in the loss. The Beavers went 4-6 overall and return 12 starters.

A blocked punt returned for a touchdown helped Simpson halt a three-game losing streak with a 21-10 win over the Norse in last year’s season finale, capping an 0-10 season for Luther. Firstyear head coach Aaron Hafner inherits nine starters in 2013.

When Jim Glogowski came to Simpson in 2008, he brought a sense of excitement and enthusiasm to the school’s football program. Leading a passionate coaching staff, Glogowski has the pieces in place to bring the Storm back to prominence. Glogowski completed his fifth season as Simpson’s head coach in 2012, leading the Storm to a 6-4 record and a second-place finish in the Iowa Conference. The 31st head coach in program history, Glogowski owns an overall record of 23-27. In 2012 he added the role of defensive coordinator in addition to his head coaching duties. Glogowski and the Storm started the 2012 season 5-1, including wins over rivals Wartburg (20-19) and Central (21-18). Simpson suffered a three-game skid in the middle of the season, but closed the year with a win over Luther to give Simpson its best record since 2008 and finish in a tie for second in the Iowa Conference standings. Five players were named first team all-conference, wide receiver/returner Brad Vogel earned First Team All-West Region honors and linebacker Mark Cronin finished the season as an Academic All-American. After starting the 2011 season 0-3, the Storm won five of their last seven games. Included in the run was a thrilling 38-37 overtime win over then-No. 19 Wartburg in Waverly. Simpson made up a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit in the win, its first over Wartburg since 1997. In his debut season of 2008, Glogowski delivered the first winning season in four years, as the Storm posted a 7-3 record in finishing third in the conference. The seven wins marked the most by a Simpson first-year head coach since Lloyd Dean led Simpson to a 7-3 record in

1931. Simpson posted the best total offense and total defense in the Iowa Conference in the process. Glogowski came to Simpson from the University of South Dakota, where he spent four seasons with the Coyotes. From 2006 to 2007, Glogowski served as the team’s defensive coordinator, guiding Division II’s fifth-best run defense in 2006. Prior to joining the South Dakota staff, Glogowski was the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Allegheny College (Pa.) from 2001-03. From 2000 to 2001, Glogowski was special teams coordinator and outside linebacker coach at Clarion University (Pa.). Prior to that he was special teams coordinator and inside linebacker coach at Allegheny from 1998-2000, a graduate assistant at Augustana College (S.D.) in 1997-98 and a student assistant at South Dakota in 1996. A four-year starter for the Coyotes at strong safety and linebacker, Glogowski earned Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America Honors in 1995 after a season in which he had 91 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 5.5 quarterback sacks and an interception. He was also voted the North Central Conference Most Valuable Defensive Back in 1995. He earned All-Conference honors in 1995 and was honorable mention All-Conference in 1993 and 1994. Jim and his wife Kate, along with sons Jacob and Ben and daughter, Maddie, reside in Indianola.

Assistant Coaches

JOE BESCHORNER Offensive Coordinator Assistant Head Coach

A 2000 Simpson graduate, Joe Beschorner enters his sixth season as an assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Storm in 2013. In his first two seasons, Beschorner helped develop one of the top rushing offenses in the conference. In the last two seasons, Simpson has boasted a vaunted passing attack which has helped quarterback Taylor Nelson set numerous passing records. Joe and his wife Beth reside in Indianola with their four children: daughters Olivia, Shea and Piper and son, Mack.

KEVIN FERGUSON Offensive Line

The 2013 season marks Kevin Freguson’s 11th at his alma mater. For the first five seasons he coached linebackers and kickers, serving as the co-defensive coordinator in 2007. He began coaching the offensive line in 2008 as the men at the point of attack paved the way for one of the league’s top-two rushing attacks in 2008 and 2009. In 2012, Ferguson’s line allowed the fewest sacks in league play. Kevin and his wife, Beth, reside in Indianola with their son, Blake, and newborn daughter, Cara.

JAMES HOFFMAN Wide Receivers

The 2013 season marks Hoffman’s seventh on the Simpson staff and first as a full-time assistant. Hoffman has coached running backs and receivers in his time at Simpson and will focus on the receivers again in 2013. Hoffman coached a pair of all-conference receivers in 2012, as Taylor Rogers earned first team honors and Brad Vogel earned second team recognition. James resides in Des Moines with his wife, Kasey (a former Simpson softball player), and daughters Kameryn and Kourtney.

JEREMY KASPER Special Teams Defensive Backs

LUKE BENTLEY Running Backs

The 2013 season marks Jeremy Kasper’s second as Simpson’s special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. Kasper’s first season with the Storm saw his special teams units lead the Iowa Conference in kickoff return average (24.8), punt return average (11.4) and kickoff coverage (41.1 net average). Kick returner Brad Vogel earned first team allregion honors in the process. Jeremy and his wife, Abigail, reside in Ankeny with their daughter, Kora.

The 2013 season marks Bentley’s third as an assistant on the Simpson football staff, where he coaches the running backs. Prior to joining the staff, Bentley began coaching in the Des Moines Public Schools. Most recently, Bentley coached running backs for the Des Moines Blaze semi-pro football team, which went 12-0 in 2011 and won a national championship. Luke resides in Pleasant Hill with his wife, Tania, and daughters Kayla and Abby.

PAUL DAVIS Defensive Line

The 2013 season marks Paul Davis’ 11th as the defensive line coach at Simpson. During his tenure, Davis has coached four All-Americans and in 2012 his defensive line recorded 28.5 of the team’s 31 sacks. An Iowa State graduate, Paul and his wife Susan have two sons, Tim and Kevin. Tim resides in Los Angeles while Kevin and his wife, Corinne live in Coralville, Iowa with their newborn daughter, Nora. Paul and Susan reside in Carlisle, Iowa.

BRAD GREEN Kickers/Punters

A former punter and kicker at Purdue University, Brad Green enters his second season coaching the kickers and punters for the Storm in 2013. Green is an experienced high school coach, spending time at Des Moines Christian, Woodward-Granger, Eastbrook in Marion, Ind. and Tipton in Tipton, Ind. Green currently works at Iowa Methodist Hospital and is a member of the Iowa Air National Guard. He and his wife, Jaci, reside in Indianola with their children Madi, Max, Josiah and Hattie.

TIM LONE Linebackers

The 2013 season marks Tim Lone’s second as an assistant coach for Simpson, where he will work with the defensive line. No stranger to Storm Football, Lone was a student coach for the Red and Gold from 2007 to 2009 and was a member of the team in 2006. The last two seasons he served as an offensive and defensive line coach at Dowling Catholic High School. Lone graduated from Simpson in 2010 with majors in journalism and mass communications. He and his wife, Megan, reside in Urbandale.

The 2013 season marks Jake Rissi’s third as an assistant defensive coach for the Storm. Rissi served as a student coach in 2011 and 2012 following his own playing career. Rissi was a three-year letterwinner for current head coach, Jim Glogowski, as a fullback, earning honorable mention all-conference honors following his junior season in 2009. JAKE RISSI Defense

PETE TRAYNOR Tight Ends

A former Green Bay Packer and Iowa Hawkeye standout, Pete Traynor enters his second season at Simpson in 2013, where he works with the tight ends. A 2003 graduate of the University of Iowa, Traynor was a three-year letterwinner for the Hawkeyes and was twice named to the Big 10 AllAcademic Team. After college, he spent seven years in the Arena circuit. In 2006, he signed with Green Bay and appeared in four games. Traynor coached at Iowa City High in 2004 and 2005.

Cowles/Carse Renovation Another exciting construction project is underway at Simpson College.

The Cowles/Carse Fitness Center Renovation began in early March and will create a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex. The $6 million project will allow Simpson to offer exceptional resources for students, faculty and staff in one central location. “One of the best parts of this project is that it will support our total education philosophy,” said John Sirianni, former athletic director who is currently involved in fundraising for the project. “It will greatly increase the opportunities for recreation, fitness, athletics and wellness for our campus community but it will also have a very positive impact on two of our most popular majors, Exercise Science and Athletic Training.” Indeed the renovation and expansion of classrooms is a primary focus including additional classrooms and an exercise science and athletic training lab and a SwimEx rehabilitation and therapy pool that will create handson experiences for Simpson students.

In the 20,000-square-foot renovation, there will be a 4,500-square-foot aerobic and strength training room, a 1,500-square-foot dance studio and a 5,500-square foot-strength and conditioning facility. Expanded wrestling space will also be housed in the lower level of the building. Much of this renovation is possible in the current space because Simpson removed its swimming pool and repurposed that space for the fitness center. The college now partners with newly constructed Indianola YMCA to use its state-of-the-art swimming facility for the competitive program. The renovated fitness center will be connected to the brand new Kent Campus Center, giving students nearly 170,000 square feet of activity space right in the center of campus. Sirianni commented, “Having these high quality facilities in the heart of campus is a great benefit for our students. It will be a great enhancement for the Simpson Experience and just one more way we are helping our students achieve success.”

Promote Academic Excellence The facility will allow students to access a variety of necessary resources that support their academic journey, the facility will include additional classrooms, an exercise science and athletic training lab and an academic suite to provide better opportunities for collaboration. Enhance Recreation and Intramurals The project will enhance student interaction through recreation and intramurals through a 1,500-square-foot dance, cheer and multipurpose room and a 4,500-square-foot space designated for aerobic and strength machine equipment available to the Simpson community. Boost Recruitment and Retention An upgraded facility will help our studentathletes reach their full strength, speed, agility, quickness and competitive potential. It will also allow allow for the most efficient use of time and space in the education and evaluation of athletics. Furthermore, the Hall of Fame conference room will be a welcoming gathering area used for recruiting, reunions and meetings, all while overlooking the strength and fitness facilities as well as Buxton Stadium.

FACILITIES We provide our student-athletes with excellent facilities to showcase their talents. The renovation of the Cowles/Carse Fitness Center – scheduled to be completed in 2014 – promises to enhance the student-athlete’s experience even more. The $6 million project will create a first-class, comprehensive fitness complex at the heart of campus including a dual-level weight room and cardiovascular space, an expanded wrestling room, additional classroom space and a Swim Ex rehabilitation and therapy pool.

Teams competing at Buxton Stadium do so on a state-of-the-art FieldTurf Revolution playing surface and an eight-lane, Beynon synthetic track installed in the summer of 2011. Tennis teams hold court at the recently updated Dick and Nancy Buxton Tennis Complex, the baseball team competes at scenic McBride Field and the softball squad has hosted numerous NCAA Regional Tournaments at Simpson Softball Complex. A multipurpose athletic and physical education facility, Cowles Fieldhouse is the primary indoor venue and sports a new, hardwood playing surface installed in 2012. The golf teams practice and compete at beautiful Indianola Country Club, the cross country teams call Pickard Park on Highway 92 East home and the swimming and diving teams begin their first season at the Indianola YMCA in 2013.

Athletic Training The athletic training staff at Simpson realizes that in order to have a successful season, the top priority for parents and coaches is the athlete’s health. The four certified athletic trainers on staff and their 30 students provide quality healthcare to over 500 athletes. BUILDING LEADERSHIP SKILLS NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Simpson is one of only two Division III schools in Iowa to participate in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Some of the highlights of Simpson’s program include: • Academic assistance through study tables for firstyear students and tutors for individual subjects • Community service opportunities with the Special Olympics and other agencies that provide programming for students with special needs • Mentoring program that provides support for first-year students by pairing them with an upper-class student SAAC The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is one way for you to get involved in athletics beyond your sports team. Beginning with Tony Spencer in 1962, Simpson players have received 35 All-America awards from numerous outlets. Only Clint Head (1997, 1998), Guy Leman (1997, 1998), Mike Donnenwerth (2002, 2003), and Jason Ripke (2004, 2005) have earned All-America honors in multiple seasons. Ripke’s 2004 season saw him earn first team recognition from three different outlets after tallying a nation-leading 31 tackles for loss. The Storm boasted five All-Americans during its NCAA Semifinal run in 1997, the most by any team in the program’s history. Year

Only three coaches in Simpson’s 117 years of football have been named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year. John Sullivan won Simpson’s first coach of the year in 1969, a year after the league began presenting the award. Simpson’s all-time wins leader Jim Williams won four times and Jay Niemann was Simpson’s last coach of the year after leading the Storm to the postseason in 2003.

The highest honor bestowed upon an Iowa Conference Football Player is the that of league MVP. Four Simpson players have taken home the award, including three years in a row from 1996-98. Brad Jorgensen was the IIAC’s first back-to-back winner.

President

Jay Simmons Simpson College began its next generation of success when Jay Simmons took office in June 2013. He is the college’s 23rd president, succeeding the eight-year tenure of John Byrd. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Simmons came to Simpson from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. He impressed the Simpson community with his proven leadership capability, broad academic experience, fund-raising success, ability to face challenges, work ethic and open and collaborative management style. “Dr. Simmons will bring to Simpson College exactly the right set of skills necessary to build on the momentum created by John Byrd’s eight years of leader-

ship,” said Fred Hubbell, Chair of the Simpson Board of Trustees. “Simpson is in an enviable position of strength,” he added. “The addition of its leading edge curriculum, a near record enrollment and several major capital improvement projects provide an excellent platform for Dr. Simmons to put his experience and expertise to work on behalf of the entire campus and the extended Simpson family.”

Brian Niemuth A benchmark for success in the Simpson athletic department as the women’s basketball coach, Brian Niemuth added the role of athletic director when he graduated from the interim tag in July 2013. Simpson President Jay Simmons made the announcement following Niemuth’s five-month appointment as the interim athletic director. “This is one of my first acts as Simpson’s president, and I couldn’t be more excited about it,” Simmons said. “Brian Niemuth is the right person to build on Simpson’s tradition of athletic success and studentathlete development and to move us forward. He’ll do a great job. He already has.”

Niemuth will continue to coach the women’s basketball team, as he has for the past 26 seasons. This past season was one of the most successful in school history, as the Storm reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. It was also a momentous season for Niemuth, who became the 20th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 500 wins. He already was the most successful women’s basketball coach in Simpson College

Simmons holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Birmingham-Southern College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Jenne’, have two children, Samantha, who works for a graphic design company in Indianola, and Madison, a high school sophomore. At Iowa Wesleyan College, Simmons helped restructure enrollment, advancement and the college’s educational programs. He also led the college’s transition from a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to Division III of the NCAA. In addition, he recently helped the college meet a $3 million annual matching grant challenge, brought in an endowed chair for a position in the business department, reduced the discount rate and increased the ACT average for incoming students. Before accepting the Iowa Wesleyan College position, Simmons served from 1997 to 2008 as vice president for academic affairs and dean at LaGrange College in Georgia. While there, he updated faculty governance, expanded curriculum and program activities and increased international programs. Simmons has also served at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, where he was Dean of Liberal Arts, and at his alma mater, Birmingham-Southern College, where he was assistant to the dean and later assistant dean.

A seven-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, Niemuth hopes to build on the recent improvements made to the athletic department. “We have great momentum right now, and I want to help us grow the progress we’ve already made,” he said. Before arriving at Simpson, Niemuth served as an assistant basketball coach at Park College in Kansas City, Mo., for two years; one with the men’s team and one with the women’s team. He was an assistant coach at Dallas Center-Grimes (Iowa) High School. He also served as an assistant baseball coach for Simpson from 1991-97. Niemuth grew up in Kansas City, and was an allconference player and team co-captain at Park for two years. He also earned All-American honors in baseball for Park. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1988 from Grand View College in Des Moines and earned his master’s degree in sports management at Iowa State University during the summer of 1997. He is a member of Simpson’s faculty and teaches physical education classes. He and his wife, Beth, have a daughter, Brooke. They live in Altoona, Iowa.
