brian niemuth One of the best to walk the sidelines at any level of women’s college basketball, Brian Niemuth is in his 31st season as head coach in 2017-18. In 30 years, he has transformed the women’s basketball program at Simpson into one of the most well-respected in the Iowa Conference, the region and the nation. Niemuth’s up-tempo, full-court style of play produces points – and wins – in bunches. Niemuth also serves as Simpson’s Director of Athletics, a role he has held since the 2013-14 academic year. Since taking over the Simpson program in 1987, Niemuth is 559-245 overall, amassing the 10th-most wins among active Division III coaches and 20th-most all-time. During his tenure, Simpson has gone 343-149 in the Iowa Conference, making Niemuth the winningest coach in league history. Under Niemuth, the Storm have won 11 Iowa Conference championships, made 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 three times, in 2007, 2008 and 2013. Niemuth is a seven-time IIAC Coach of the Year, a three-time WBCA District Coach of the Year and was recognized as the D3hoops.com West Region Coach of the Year in 2013. Niemuth became just the 20th women’s basketball coach in NCAA Division III history to reach the 500-win mark when Simpson beat Loras 75-62 on Feb. 9, 2013. That year, Niemuth fielded one of the finest Simpson teams ever, guiding the Storm to a school-record tying 27 wins, an Iowa Conference Championship, a trip to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament and climbing as high as No. 6 in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Niemuth received his bachelor’s degree from Grand View College in 1988 and earned his master’s degree in sports management at Iowa State University during the summer of 1997. He was assistant coach at Park College in Kansas City prior to Simpson. Brian and his wife, Beth, reside in Altoona, Iowa. Their daughter, Brooke, is a 2015 Simpson graduate.
