With a forgettable 2014 season in the rear view, eighth-year head coach Jim Glogowski and the Storm have their sights set on a fresh start in 2015. Simpson returns 14 starters and 40 letterwinners from last year’s team that is looking to make a 3-7 campaign a distant memory. Glogowski’s coaching staff underwent a number of changes in the offseason, most notably at offensive coordinator. Joe Beschorner – who came to Simpson with Glogowski in 2008 – left to take the same position at NCAA Division II powerhouse Minnesota State-Mankato. His replacement, Jeff Judge, is a name familiar to Storm fans. The veteran coach helped the Storm to Iowa Conference Championships in 1996 and 1997 as the defensive coordinator, spending six seasons in Indianola the first time around (1994-99). Judge spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Defiance College. Before that, he enjoyed a nine-year tenure as the head coach at Anderson University. Staying healthy will be a key to Simpson’s success. A rash of injuries plagued the team down the stretch in 2014, a major reason the Storm lost their last seven games after a 3-0 start. Among the injured last season were all-conference defensive end Clay Finley and all-conference wide receiver Nate Connealy. Both were granted an extra year of eligibility and return for their fifth year. “We are excited about the group we have coming back,” Glogowski said. “With a veteran offensive line and plenty of other returning players across the board, we feel we have the pieces in place to compete for the IIAC championship.”

OFFENSE Despite the regime change, don’t expect many drastic changes in the offense under Judge. Simpson will still feature an up-tempo offense with the goal of getting the ball to playmakers in space. Although a strong emphasis will be placed on the running game, the passing game may become more prominent. Simpson ran the ball 1.5 times more than it passed in 2014, but Judge has a history of putting it in the air. His Anderson squad led Division III in passing offense in 2003. The strength of the offense – and the entire team – lies in a big, experienced offensive line. First Team all-Iowa Conference center Corey Meyer anchors the group, along with second team left tackle Blake Bergstrom. The group returns all five starters from last season and adds former defensive lineman Dustin Ihns to the mix. Arguably the best line in the Iowa Conference, Simpson’s big men average 6-foot-4, 290 pounds across the board. Jordan Beem gets the honor of running behind the stout offensive line. An honorable mention all-conference running back in 2014, the shifty junior led the team with 516 yards a year ago and averaged 4.2 yards per carry. Senior fullback Julius Foster also returns. Utilized more for his blocking,

S E AS ON OUTLOOK the 6-foot, 240-pound Foster is a capable pass-catcher out of the backfield after making nine catches in 2014. Senior tailback Jared Grove and a deep stable of newcomers will also vie for playing time. For the first time in Glogowski’s tenure, the game-one starter at quarterback is very much in question. Three likely candidates will compete to run Jeff Judge’s offense: senior Braedon Tovey and sophomores Caleb Frye and Sammy Sasso. Tovey is most experienced of the group, taking snaps in eight games last year and starting two. He threw for 317 yards and rushed for 58 and two TDs in his starting debut, a loss to Loras. Frye appeared in relief of the injured Tovey early in the season finale against Luther, going 5-for-8 for 61 yards and a TD on a snowy November day. Although he didn’t appear in a game in 2014, a solid spring season put Sasso in contention. The receiving corps gets a boost with the return of Connealy, who saw his season come to a close with a knee injury in the 2014 season opener. An honorable mention all-league performer in 2013, he joins fellow senior Corbin Clark as the top returning pass catchers. A vertical threat, Clark led the team with four TD receptions and 15.5 yards per catch. Junior tight end Nathan Russell (6-3, 240) caught a TD pass and will provide a big, reliable target for the new starter.

DEFENSE Nowhere were the injuries felt more than on defense in 2014. Through three games, the Storm had one of the top defenses in the nation, allowing just 5.3 points per game and causing nine turnovers. Throughout the final seven games, opponents averaged nearly 35 points while the defense generated just nine more turnovers. Despite losing a pair of all-conference performers in the interior, the line could make up the strongest unit of the defense. Play-making ends Finley and Chris McKinnon – who missed the final four games with a shoulder injury – will cause opposing quarterbacks fits. Finley had 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 2013 and McKinnon was beginning to make an impact before his season was cut short in 2014. A former defensive end, junior Mark Milbrandt bulked up in the offseason and moves to tackle, hoping to mitigate the losses of Alex Severn and Ryan Wagers. Graduation hit the linebacking crew hard. Leading tackler and First Team all-IIAC outside linebacker Brandon Abernathy and middle linebacker Joe Gilson graduated, leaving two spots to fill. Senior Shane Venteicher – who was second on the team with 66 tackles – is the lone returning starter and is poised to pick up where Abernathy left off. Cole Cook will likely see a magnified role after making 17 tackles as a sophomore. Featuring six players who started at least three games in 2014, the defensive backfield is easily the most experienced group on the defensive side of the ball. Physical safeties Abe Wolfe and Justin Shepherd started 10 games apiece and accounted for seven pass breakups. Cornerback Patrick Steffen started nine games, leading the team in interceptions (2) and pass breakups (6). Senior Reid Ryan started the first four games of the season before going down with a season-ending injury, allowing senior Zach Rathman and junior Adrean Johnson to gain valuable experience on the outside.

SPECIAL TEAMS Simpson boasts a budding talent in sophomore placekicker Drew Jensen. An Indianola product, Jensen tied a school record by going a perfect 19-for-19 on PAT attempts enroute to honorable mention all-league honors. He made 4 of 5 field goals, going perfect from inside 30 yards. In the return game, Beem earned second team all-conference honors after averaging 16.4 yards per kick return and 8.9 per punt return. Sophomore running back and track sprinter Davey Jergens also showed flashes, taking back a team-best 74-yard kick return in the season finale against Luther.

SCHEDULE A front-loaded home schedule gives the Storm a chance to start strong, as the only road trip before mid-October comes in week three at Illinois Wesleyan. Wisconsin-River Falls visits Buxton Stadium for the third season in a row in the opener and Elmhurst comes to town Sept. 26 in the final non-conference clash of the campaign. The biggest tests of the season come in weeks nine and ten against the Iowa Conference’s top finishers in 2014. The Storm close the home schedule on Halloween against runner-up Central and travel to Waverly to face preseason No. 6 Wartburg the following week.

JIM GLOGOWSKI HEAD COACH • 8TH SEASON • 33-37 RECORD AT SIMPSON

When Jim Glogowski came to Simpson in 2008, he brought a sense of excitement and enthusiasm to the school’s football program. Leading a passionate coaching staff, Glogowski has the pieces in place to bring the Storm back to prominence. Glogowski completed his seventh season as Simpson’s head coach in 2014. The 31st head coach in program history, Glogowski owns an overall record of 33-37. His 33 wins put him third on the school’s all-time wins list, just one shy of second. In 2012 he added the role of defensive coordinator in addition to his head coaching duties. Arguably the best season of Glogowski’s career came in 2013, when Simpson went 7-3 overall, 5-2 in the Iowa Conference and finished the season in sole possession of second place. Simpson won five games when trailing or tied in the fourth quarter or overtime and boasted the league’s offensive MVP in quarterback Taylor Nelson. Simpson moved into a tie for first in the conference with a dramatic 50-46 win over Dubuque in Week 8, but a last-second touchdown by Buena Vista in Week 9 moved the Storm to second. Glogowski and the Storm started the 2012 season 5-1, including wins over rivals

Wartburg (20-19) and Central (21-18). Simpson suffered a three-game skid in the middle of the season, but closed the year with a win over Luther to give Simpson its best record since 2008 and finish in a tie for second in the Iowa Conference standings. After starting the 2011 season 0-3, the Storm won five of their last seven games. Included in the run was a thrilling 38-37 overtime win over then-No. 19 Wartburg in Waverly. Simpson made up a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit in the win, its first over Wartburg since 1997. In his debut season of 2008, Glogowski delivered the first winning season in four years, as the Storm posted a 7-3 record in finishing third in the conference. The seven wins marked the most by a Simpson first-year head coach since Lloyd Dean led Simpson to a 7-3 record in 1931. Simpson posted the best total offense and total defense in the Iowa Conference in the process. Glogowski came to Simpson from the University of South Dakota, where he spent four seasons with the Coyotes. From 2006 to 2007, Glogowski served as the team’s defensive coordinator, guiding Division II’s fifth-best run defense in 2006. Prior to joining the South Dakota staff, Glogowski was the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Allegheny College (Pa.) from 2001-03. From 2000 to 2001, Glogowski was special teams coordinator and outside linebacker coach at Clarion University (Pa.). Prior to that he was special teams coordinator and inside linebacker coach at Allegheny from 1998-2000, a graduate assistant at Augustana College (S.D.) in 1997-98 and a student assistant at South Dakota in 1996. A four-year starter for the Coyotes at strong safety and linebacker, Glogowski earned Don Hansen Football Gazette All-America Honors in 1995 after a season in which he had 91 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 5.5 quarterback sacks and an interception. He was also voted the North Central Conference Most Valuable Defensive Back in 1995. He earned All-Conference honors in 1995 and was honorable mention All-Conference in 1993 and 1994. Jim and his wife Kate, along with sons Jacob and Ben and daughters, Maddie and Samantha, reside in Indianola.

No stranger to Simpson football, veteran coach Jeff Judge begins his second stint on the Storm staff in 2015. Judge comes to Simpsom from Defiance College, where he served as defensive coordinator for three seasons. Prior to that, Judge was the head coach at Anderson University from 2003-11. Judge’s first goaround at Simpson was as defensive coordinator from 1994-99, helping the Storm to back-to-back Iowa Conference titles in 1996 and 1997. His 30-plus year career includes stops at Wis.-Stevens Point, Moorhead State, Utah, Purdue and Iowa State. Judge graduated from Iowa State in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and received his master’s from Purdue in Sports Administration in 1989. Judge and his wife, Laurie have a daughter, Katie, and a son, Thomas.

LUKE BENTLEY TIGHT ENDS • 5TH SEASON A running backs coach for the Storm since joining the staff in 2011, Bentley makes the transition to the tight ends in 2015. Prior to joining the staff, Bentley began coached for the Des Moines Public Schools. Most recently, Bentley coached running backs for the Des Moines Blaze semi-pro football team, which won a national championship in 2011. Luke resides in Pleasant Hill with his wife, Tania, and daughters Kayla and Abby.

MICHAEL CHIA RUNNING BACKS • 1ST SEASON Michael Chia’s coaching career at Simpson follows a successful playing career under Jim Glogowski. Chia was a four-year letterwinner as a running back for the Storm, earning all-Iowa Conference honors as a senior in 2013. He also lettered for the baseball team.

TED HAAG DEFENSIVE LINE • 2ND SEASON After a successful playing career for the Storm, Ted Haag enters his second season as an assistant coach, moving from the linebackers to the defensive line in 2015. A four-year letterwinner at linebacker for the Storm, the team captain earned second team allconference honors as a senior in 2013. He graduated from Simpson in 2014.

JAMES HOFFMAN DEFENSIVE BACKS • 9TH SEASON The 2015 season marks Hoffman’s ninth on the Simpson staff. He has coached both running backs and receivers in his first eight seasons on the Storm coaching staff but will move to the defensive backs in 2015. Hoffman began coaching the Storm in 2006 as a student assistant after lettered three times for Simpson from 2003-05 as a defensive back for the Storm. Hoffman resides in Des Moines with his wife, Kasey (a former Simpson softball player), and daughters Kameryn and Kourtney.

Another Simpson alum, Mike Kuhn enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Storm in 2015. Kuhn was a three-year letterwinner as a wide receiver during his playing career at Simpson, earning all-Iowa Conference honors as a sophomore in 2011. He was a team captain as a senior in 2013.

TIM LONE OFFENSIVE LINE/TIGHT ENDS • 4TH SEASON The 2015 season marks Tim Lone’s fourth as an assistant coach for Simpson, where he will move sides of the ball to coach the offensive line and tight ends after guiding the defensive line in 2014. No stranger to Storm Football, Lone was a student coach for Simpson from 2007 to 2009 and was a member of the team in 2006. In 2010 and 2011 he served as an offensive and defensive line coach at Dowling Catholic High School. Lone graduated from Simpson in 2010 with majors in journalism and mass communications. He and his wife, Megan, reside in Des Moines.

PETE TRAYNOR OFFENSIVE LINE • 4TH SEASON The 2015 season marks Pete Traynor’s fourth as an assistant coach at Simpson and first as a full-time member of the staff. Traynor became the offensive line coach during the offseason and also took over the strength and conditioning duties for the football team. A 2003 graduate of the University of Iowa, Traynor was a three-year letterwinner for the Hawkeyes and was twice named to the Big 10 All-Academic Team. After college, he spent seven years in the Arena circuit. In 2006, he signed with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers and appeared in four games. Traynor coached at Iowa City High in 2004 and 2005. Traynor and his wife, Laura, have a daughter, Payton, and a son, Cole. The Taynors reside in Urbandale.

JAKE RISSI DEFENSIVE BACKS • 5TH SEASON The 2015 season marks Jake Rissi’s fifth as an assistant coach for the Storm and third with the defensive backs. Rissi served as a student coach in 2011 and 2012 following his own playing career. Rissi was a three-year letterwinner for current head coach Jim Glogowski, earning honorable mention all-conference honors as a fullback following his junior season in 2009. Rissi is married to his wife, Lindsey.

JOHNNIE SIMS DEFENSIVE LINE • 1ST SEASON A standout defensive lineman during his playing days, Johnnie Sims begins his first season on the Storm coaching staff in 2015. A 2014 graduate of Simpson, Sims was a two-year letterwinner and two-time all-Iowa Conference performer as a defensive end for coach Jim Glogowski’s defense. He finished his career with 10 sacks, including seven as a junior in 2012.

Cowles Fieldhouse serves as the primary indoor facility and is the home of Storm basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The multi-purpose facility can seat up to 3,000 spectators and is highlighted by a large, LED video board display measuring 11 ½ feet wide and 8 ½ feet tall. The swimming teams have the luxury of competing at one of the Midwest’s finest Division III facilities, the Indianola YMCA Natatorium. The YMCA opened in 2013 and features a 13.5-feet deep end, eight 25-yard lanes, two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter diving board.

Beginning with Tony Spencer in 1962, Simpson players have received 35 All-America awards from numerous outlets. Only Clint Head (1997, 1998), Guy Leman (1997, 1998), Mike Donnenwerth (2002, 2003), and Jason Ripke (2004, 2005) have earned All-America honors in multiple seasons. Ripke’s 2004 season saw him earn first team recognition from three different outlets after tallying a nation-leading 31 tackles for loss. The Storm boasted five All-Americans during its NCAA Semifinal run in 1997, the most by any team in the program’s history.

JAY SIMMONS COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Simpson College began its next generation of success when Jay Simmons took office in June 2013. He is the college’s 23rd president, succeeding the eight-year tenure of John Byrd. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Simmons came to Simpson from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. He impressed the Simpson community with his proven leadership capability, broad academic experience, fund-raising success, ability to face challenges, work ethic and open and collaborative management style. “Dr. Simmons will bring to Simpson College exactly the right set of skills necessary to build on the momentum created by John Byrd’s eight years of leadership,” said Fred Hubbell, Chair of the Simpson Board of Trustees. “Simpson is in an enviable position of strength,” he added. “The addition of its leading edge curriculum, a near record enrollment and several major capital improvement projects provide an excellent

platform for Dr. Simmons to put his experience and expertise to work on behalf of the entire campus and the extended Simpson family.” Simmons holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Birmingham-Southern College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Jenne’, have two children, Samantha, who works for a graphic design company in Indianola, and Madison, a high school sophomore. At Iowa Wesleyan College, Simmons helped restructure enrollment, advancement and the college’s educational programs. He also led the college’s transition from a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to Division III of the

A benchmark for success in the Simpson athletic department as the women’s basketball coach, Brian Niemuth added the role of athletic director when he graduated from the interim tag in July 2013. Simpson President Jay Simmons made the announcement following Niemuth’s five-month appointment as the interim athletic director. “This is one of my first acts as Simpson’s president, and I couldn’t be more excited about it,” Simmons said. “Brian Niemuth is the right person to build on Simpson’s tradition of athletic success and student-athlete development and to move us forward. He’ll do a great job. He already has.” Niemuth also serves as the head women’s basketball coach, a position he has held for the past 28 seasons. The 2012-13 season was one of the most successful in school history, as the Storm reached the

NCAA. In addition, he recently helped the college meet a $3 million annual matching grant challenge, brought in an endowed chair for a position in the business department, reduced the discount rate and increased the ACT average for incoming students. Before accepting the Iowa Wesleyan College position, Simmons served from 1997 to 2008 as vice president for academic affairs and dean at LaGrange College in Georgia. While there, he updated faculty governance, expanded curriculum and program activities and increased international programs. Simmons has also served at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, where he was Dean of Liberal Arts, and at his alma mater, BirminghamSouthern College, where he was assistant to the dean and later assistant dean.

Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. It was also a momentous season for Niemuth, who became the 20th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 500 wins. He already was the most successful women’s basketball coach in Simpson College history, winning 11 Iowa Conference Championships and leading the team to 11 trips to the NCAA tournament. A seven-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, Niemuth hopes to build on the recent improvements made to the athletic department. “We have great momentum right now, and I want to help us grow the progress we’ve already made,” he said.

Before arriving at Simpson, Niemuth served as an assistant basketball coach at Park College in Kansas City, Mo., for two years; one with the men’s team and one with the women’s team. He was an assistant coach at Dallas Center-Grimes (Iowa) High School. He also served as an assistant baseball coach for Simpson from 1991-97. Niemuth grew up in Kansas City, and was an all-conference player and team co-captain at Park for two years. He also earned All-American honors in baseball for Park. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1988 from Grand View College in Des Moines and earned his master’s degree in sports management at Iowa State University during the summer of 1997. He and his wife, Beth, have a daughter, Brooke, who graduated from Simpson in 2015. The Niemuths reside in Altoona, Iowa.

Nicknames and mascots have long played an important role in athletics and support for those teams which they represent. Many teams experience a variety of nicknames over the years and Simpson College is no different. The name game started near the turn of the century as the interest in college athletics grew, and spurred again in the 1990’s with the cultural sensitivity of nicknames and mascots under review by an entire nation. Earliest documentation of a mascot or cheer leader indicate the person leading the crowds was called “The Joshua.” This name was derived from a pep club of the late 1800’s. Yet at the time “The Joshua” was leading chants in Hopper Gymnasium, Simpson College had no official nickname for its athletic teams. The earliest names used were “Simpsonians” or “Simpsonites,” but neither sounded good nor caught on for an extended period of time. During the first decade of the 1900’s the Des Moines press referred to Simpson athletic teams as the “Methodists.” The name stuck for a while until the people from Iowa Wesleyan (also a Methodist affiliated school) insisted they had prior claim to the name and that they were more devoutly Methodist than the folks from Simpson. The Simpsonian (Simpson College student newspaper) called the teams the “Maple Leafs,” attempting to evoke pride from the school’s famed trees, but like previous names, it was short-lived. ROWDY ROOSTER From 1910 to the Extinct early 1930’s, college publications pegged the athletic teams with “Red and Gold” for a nickname, referring to the school colors. Unfortunately, the name was abstract and could not be used to label individual athletes or the team as a whole. In 1930, a college alumnus, John Hors-

ley, ended years of indecision. His proposal, stated in the Simpsonian, suggested Simpson adopt the name “Redmen.” Horsley cited Indian lore and traditions, picturesque vocabulary and easy pronunciation, as backing for his idea. It matched well with the school colors and no other team in the conference used it or had ever used it. Along with this name came the Indian mascot and other visual symbols associated with Indian traditions. Redmen would remain the nickname for many years. The mascot changed in 1968 when amid national debate and changing campus attitudes, certain symbols and ceremonies relating to Indian traditions were dropped. The crowning of a Big Chief, Indian Princess and Indian Brave were dropped from Homecoming activities, as well as the symbols such as the headdress. Although these ceremonies were commenced, throughout the 1970’s, the mascot leading the crowd at football games remained an Indian riding a horse. As the THUNDERCAT next decade apMIA since the early 2000s proached, changes continued. In 1981, the name “Lady Reds” was adopted for female teams, while the male teams remained the “Redmen.” Another change that came in the early 1980’s was the use of Rowdy Rooster as the college’s mascot. Rowdy was a student dressed up in a red costume resembling a chicken whose

identification with the names Redmen and Lady Reds remains a mystery to this day. Simpson decided in 1992 to drop the use of Redmen and Lady Reds as the school’s nicknames. The use of Redmen had been controversial for three prior decades and a change was needed. Simpson College president Stephen Jennings announced the name would be dropped out of moral necessity to oblige the wishes of Native American groups, who find such names offensive to their culture. What was once viewed as celebratory was now viewed as insensitive and Simpson would not ignore the wishes of Native Americans. The Native American protests against the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the use of “The tomahawk chop” during the World Series accelerated the internal debate. The name Lady Reds was also dropped at this point, and the search was on for a nickname without sexist distinction. Along with the nickname change came the last days of the mascot Rowdy Rooster. A task force composed of faculty, staff, students, alumni and trustees was formed to determine a new nickname for the school. After many meetings and suggestions, the name “Storm” was announced in April of 1992. Oth-

er finalists considered included the Cardinals, Owls, Reds, Red Wave and, once again, the Maple Leafs. Simpson’s new logo and look debuted at the Golden Circle Classic football game against Drake University in fall of 1992. The new mascot was not announced at this time. Simpson went without a mascot through the 1993-94 school year before the announcement and unveiling of Thundercat at a basketball game during the 1993-94 season.
