That was the question posed by first-year head coach Matt Jeter when discussing favorites for the 2016 Iowa Conference crown. He’s got a point. The Storm return 14 starters from last year’s team that went a deceiving 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the league. Simpson led at one point during all four conference losses, holding fourth-quarter leads in three. Among the Storm’s list of returners are three players who were the best in the league at their respective positions in 2015. Senior running back Jordan Beem led the conference with 1,254 rushing yards, senior defensive end Isaac Frazier had a league-high eight sacks and junior running back/ return specialist Davey Jergens paced the IIAC in kick returns. A Simpson alum, Jeter provides a link to Simpson’s glory years. He was a team captain and starting cornerback as a senior in 1997 when the Storm went 12-1, advancing to the national semifinals. In all, Jeter went 22-2 during his two years at Simpson. The 1997 squad is the last Simpson team to win an IIAC title. “We’ve adopted a theme for the season called ‘The Chase.’ We’re chasing excellence and we’re chasing an Iowa Conference Championship,” Jeter said. “We felt we wanted to put something out in front of the guys that laid out where we’re going. Now the only question is how we’re going to get there.”

2016 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

OFFENSE Simpson returns seven starters for coordinator Jeff Judge after tallying the No. 2 rushing offense in the league in 2015. With plenty of skill players to go around, the Storm are expecting even more in 2016. “I’m excited to see our offense,” Jeter said. “We’ve got a lot of skill guys and they’re explosive. Any one of our skill guys can take it to the house at any time.” Beem is the undisputed focal-point of the offense after a breakout season in 2015. Beem had a year to remember, earning first team All-Iowa Conference honors after notching just the 10th, 1,000yard rushing season in school history. The dynamic back averaged 5.4 yards per carry and was the team’s fourth-leading receiver. He enters the season with a streak of seven games of 100-plus yards on the ground and is the seventh-leading rusher in school history. “When you have a guy like Jordan Beem, you have to get him 20-25 touches per game,” Jeter said. “I expect him to have a similar - if not better year than what he had last year.” The leading candidate under center is junior Caleb Frye. Frye settled into the starting quarterback role as a sophomore in 2015, completing 56 percent of his passes while tossing 16 TDs to

S E AS ON OUTLOOK seven interceptions. The dual-threat signal-caller also ran for 359 yards, including 132 against Wartburg. He got better as the season went on, averaging 230 yards per game with eight TDs and one pick over the final three games. Frye has a number of options at receiver, including upper-classmen Devin Norman and Jackson Redmond. Norman is the team’s leading returning wideout and both have shown big-play ability. Braden Meints will play an increased role in 2016 and 6-foot-4 tight end Nathan Russell will be a popular target in the red zone after pulling in a team-best three touchdown catches in 2015. A pair of solid, experienced offensive linemen in Second Team All-IIAC pick Dustin Ihns and three-year starter Blake Beard will anchor a group that was hit hardest by graduation. With the loss of veteran all-conference tackle Blake Bergstrom and center Corey Meyer, a host of freshmen and sophomores will vie for time on the interior while Ihns and Beard man the tackle positions.

DEFENSE A defensive coach by trade, Jeter will assume the responsibilities of defensive coordinator in addition to his head coaching duties. The Storm will have a new scheme under Jeter, one that emphasizes speed. “We’re putting in a new defense, so guys are starting to play faster,” Jeter said. “We want to pride ourselves on tackling and not giving up big plays.” Jeter’s defense has the benefit of arguably the best and most versatile defensive end in the Iowa Conference in Isaac Frazier. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior led the league in sacks and tackles for loss a year ago and is poised for another big year. A dual-sport standout, Frazier qualified for track and field nationals in the decathlon last spring. “He’s a different guy out there,” Jeter said. “He can play sideline-to-sideline, he can jump, he can run, pressure the quarterback, play in coverage. We are going to do a lot with him because he’s a special talent.” Frazier is just one part of a solid front seven that features two returning starters at defensive tackle in seniors Jake Stearns and Mark Milbrandt. Returners Cody Carlson and Ryan Policheri will vie for time opposite of Frazier. Cole Cook is the lone returning starter at linebacker after making 45 tackles a year ago. Despite a lack of experience, Jeter feels good about the group that will feature some new faces. Galen Gist, Austin Gilbert and Bryan Gregson will likely figure into the mix. “We’re deep at linebacker as far as talent and speed are concerned,” Jeter said. “They can all run, and where offenses are going know, you need guys that can run at the linebacker position.” The defensive backfield returns three starters, including the team’s leading returning tackler, Adrean Johnson-Wigley. The senior safety made 78 stops a year ago and broke up five passes. His classmate, Patrick Steffen, led the team with eight pass breakups and two interceptions from his corner position a year ago. Safety Justin Shepherd will begin the season on the injured reserve list, but will likely factor into the mix upon his return. Zach Uhlenhopp saw significant time at safety a year ago, and returners Brandt Seward and Prince Krah will be featured at corner.

SPECIAL TEAMS The Storm led the Iowa Conference in kickoff coverage and kick returns in 2015, a trend Jeter wants to continue to emphasize in 2016. “Field position is very important,” he said. “We want to gain the winning edge in field position. Whether we can keep the opponent inside the 20 or we can get a good return, we’ll be in good position.” Simpson has the tools in place to stay atop the league in the field position battle thanks in large part to kickoff specialist Travis Tupper and first team All-IIAC kick returner Davey Jergens. Tupper tied for the league lead with 11 touchbacks in 2016 while the speedy Jergens averaged almost 25 yards per kick return. The Storm also return a two-time honorable mention all-conference pick in placekicker Drew Jensen. The junior made 24 of 28 extra points a year ago and went 8-for-10 on field goal attempts. He went 3-for-4 from 40-plus, including a career-long 45-yarder.

MATT JETER HEAD COACH • FIRST SEASON

A key component on two of the greatest teams in Simpson football history, Matt Jeter returns to his alma mater looking to bring back the magic that helped the Storm to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons during Jeter’s playing days. Matt Jeter was hired as head coach of the Simpson football team on April 1, 2016. A Simpson alumnus who won two Iowa Conference titles as a player with the Storm, Jeter comes back to Indianola from the University of Central Missouri, where he served as defensive coordinator. Jeter becomes the 33rd head coach in program history following a six-year stint at NCAA Division II Central Missouri. Jeter started out as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Warrensburg, Mo. institution before taking over as the defensive coordinator from 2011-15. Jeter was a two-year starter at cornerback for the Simpson football team from 1996-97, helping the Storm to a record of 22-2 and two trips to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Jeter helped Central Missouri to a 47-22 mark in his six seasons on staff, including three postseason appearances. The Mules won at least six games each season during Jeter’s tenure, highlighted by a record-setting 11-win season in 2010 when the Mules finished 11-3 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Central Missouri posted eight-win campaigns in 2011, 2014 and 2015, appearing in the Kanza Bowl in 2011 and winning the Texarkana Bowl in 2014. The Mules went 8-3 last fall, narrowly missing a berth in the postseason.

2016 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

Jeter’s defenses consistently ranked among the best in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Mules were third in total defense in 2015 (365.8 ypg), fifth in 2013 (391.6 ypg) and fourth in 2012 (365.8). His units had a knack for creating turnovers, generating 59 in the last two seasons, including a MIAA-leading 30 in 2014. In five years as defensive coordinator, Jeter’s teams allowed less than 23 points per game while 16 defensive players earned all-MIAA honors. Prior to joining the staff at Central Missouri, Jeter spent eight years as an assistant at NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision member Drake University. He served as the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs, helping Drake win the Pioneer Football League title in 2004. He was the defensive coordinator in 2007, piloting a unit that led the PFL in redzone scoring and ranked fourth in the nation with 31 forced turnovers. Jeter helped the Bulldogs to six consecutive winning seasons from 2004-09, including a 10-2 mark in 2004, a 9-2 record in 2006 and an 8-3 mark in 2009. Jeter started at cornerback for head coach Jim Williams in 1996 and 1997, the most successful two-year period Simpson football history. The Storm won back-to-back Iowa Conference titles, going 10-1 in 1996 in 12-1 in 1997.

Jeter was a team captain on the 1997 team that set a school record for wins in a season and made an appearance in the national semifinals. He also earned two letters as a member of the track and field team. He transferred to Simpson from Iowa Central Community College, where he was a first team all-region selection and team captain as a sophomore in 1995. Jeter earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Simpson in 1998. He and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons: Jordan and Jayden.

FACILITIES We provide our student-athletes with excellent facilities to build and showcase their talents. The newest addition to help achieve athletic success is the Steven Johnson Fitness Center. The $6 million renovation is highlighted by a 4,500-square-foot cardiovascular deck overlooking a 5,500-squarefoot strength and conditioning room. The stunning facility overlooks Bill Buxton Stadium through an all-glass exterior, providing an impressive view to those inside and out. Teams competing at Buxton Stadium do so on a state-of-the-art Field Turf Revolution playing surface and an eight-lane, Beynon synthetic track installed in the summer of 2011. Cowles Fieldhouse serves as the primary indoor facility and is the home of Storm basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The multi-purpose facility can seat up to 3,000 spectators and is highlighted by a large, LED video board display measuring 11 ½ feet wide and 8 ½ feet tall. The swimming teams have the luxury of competing at one of the Midwest’s finest Division III facilities, the Indianola YMCA Natatorium. The YMCA opened in 2013 and features a 13.5-feet deep end, eight 25-yard lanes, two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter diving board.

CLINT HEAD

ALL-AMERICANS

Beginning with Tony Spencer in 1962, Simpson players have received 35 All-America awards from numerous outlets. Only Clint Head (1997, 1998), Guy Leman (1997, 1998), Mike Donnenwerth (2002, 2003), and Jason Ripke (2004, 2005) have earned All-America honors in multiple seasons. Ripke’s 2004 season saw him earn first team recognition from three different outlets after tallying a nation-leading 31 tackles for loss. The Storm boasted five All-Americans during its NCAA Semifinal run in 1997, the most by any team in the program’s history.

HI STORY

THE GLORY YEARS 1893

Simpson first organized a football team in 1892, but did not begin playing an intercollegiate schedule until 1893. During 1893, Simpson played a five-game schedule in which the squad compiled 174 points and went undefeated against Des Moines University and Drake (twice). Captained by Fletcher Homan, the team had no real coach; but student manager, Charles Cheney, a senior, is credited as being the first Simpson football coach.

1923

Under the direction of head coach Noel Workman, Simpson won the first Iowa Conference football title in 1923. After dropping the first game of the year to Iowa State, the Redmen won their next eight games, including five shutouts. The team, led by captain and All-Conference tackle Joe Meek, outscored the opposition 289-37 in the nine game. It was during this time that the legend of Kenneth “Moco” Mercer was born. Mercer scored 348 points and was named All-Conference at halfback three times (1923-35). He earned 15 letters in four different sports at Simpson (basketball, football, wrestling, and track) and later went onto a professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles before returning to coach at Simpson in the 1930s.

1924

Simpson won its second consecutive Iowa Conference title, going 8-0-1. Included in the eight victories were five shutouts, matching the total from the previous season. The Redmen won their first seven games before a 14-14 tie against Iowa Wesleyan on Nov. 21. Simpson ended the season the following week with a 6-0 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan. All-Conference selections included Kenneth Karr, Moco Mercer, Walter Officer, and Leslie Holiday.

1925

Simpson remained on top of the Iowa Conference standings in 1925, sharing the league title with Upper Iowa. Although Simpson lost two of its first three games, the Redmen recovered to post a 6-2-1 record. During the season, “Moco” Mercer set an Iowa Conference record for most points scored in a career with 285. That record stood until 1998 when it was broken by another Simpson running back, Guy Leman. Noel Workman left to become the head coach at Iowa State following the season, going 22-3-2 with three IIAC titles in three seasons.

1931

Although the nation was suffering from the grips of the Depression, there was no depression in Simpson football in the early 1930s. Simpson captured the Iowa Conference Championship in 1931 under the direction of first-year head coach Lloyd “Judd” Dean. The team put together a 7-3 record, remaining flawless in Iowa Conference action with a 6-0 mark. A key to the Redmen’s success was the play of fullback Edwin “Kink” Richards, who went on to sign with the NFL’s New York Giants.

1933

Simpson won the 1933 Iowa Conference title despite Iowa Wesleyan going undefeated in its six game schedule. Simpson won its second league crown in three years under the complicated “Stanley-Dean” system, which rated teams on the basis of strength of the schedule. Simpson went 7-2-1, going unbeatedn in conference play. Simpson played the first night game in school history on Oct. 6 against Central.

1934

The “Stanley-Dean” system led to a second-straight IIAC Championship in 1934 despite Simpson’s 3-2-1 record in the league. Because of the circumstances, writer Buck Turnbull stated in the history of the Iowa Conference book, “The conference did not recognize a championship team.” However, since the league had adopted the Stanley-Dean System, for the better or worse, Simpson is listed in the books as the 1934 Iowa Conference champion. The system was dropped in 1935.

1949

Simpson won its first conference title since 1934 by going 8-1 under third-year head coach R.G. “Hap” Miller. The lone loss was a 23-17 setback at Coe, but the Redmen won six straight to close the season. Backfield ace John Mills, tackle Bob Miller and fullback Jim Wright earned allconference honors. Miller went on to serve as head football coach for 10 years, going 34-47-3. Remembered fondly for his efforts in the physical education department, Miller had a successful stint as Simpson’s head baseball coach, taking the Redmen to the 1958 NAIA National Baseball Tournament.

1969

After finishing in second place the previous two seasons, Simpson ended a 20-year conference title drought by going 8-2 under fourth-year head coach John Sullivan. The Redmen boasted gutty 200-pound linemen, like Tom Powell and Dave Halford, who held their own against their 300-pound competition. Center Rich Heckman and tackles Jim Oplt and Perry Hunter provided big holes throughout the season while Indianola native Joe Blake, Sr., took the conference by storm. Simpson ended the regular season with a 30-7 win over William Jewell, ranked 10th in NAIA. Simpson went on to play in the Mineral Water Bowl, which ended in a 21-0 loss to St. John’s (Minn.). Sullivan earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors at season’s end.

1988

Going into the 1987 season, Simpson had experienced 14 losing seasons in 15 years, prompting the hiring of legendary high school coach, Jim Williams. It took just one year for the move to pay off, as the Redmen shocked the league by going 9-2 and a perfect 8-0 to win the IIAC. A junior transfer from Nebraska-Omaha named Ricky Gales won the rushing title with 1,301 yards and helped Simpson to its first-ever NCAA Playoff appearance, a 29-27 los to Wis.-Whitewater. In one of the biggest games in the school history, Simpson forced a missed extra point in the final seconds to beat Central 14-13. In just his second year, Williams was named IIAC Coach of the Year.

1989

Though the 1989 season didn’t produce a conference title thanks to a 54-30 loss to Central in the regular season finale, it did result in another trip to the postseason. An unstoppable Ricky Gales set NCAA Division III records for rushing (2,035 yards) and scoring (166 points) as Simpson went 8-3. Gales saved his best effort for last, rushing for a then all-divisions record 389 yards in a playoff loss to St. John’s (Minn.). The Redmen averaged 514 yards and 45.5 points per game and junior quarterback Joe Blake, Jr. led Division III in passing efficiency (203.3). Sophomore kicker Ned Greer led the nation in points by a kicker with 61, going 49-for-50 on extra point attempts.

1991

Jim Williams’ 1991 squad rolled to a 10-0 regular season record, the first undefeated regular season since 1893. A perfect 8-0 mark gave Simpson an IIAC Championship and a trip to the playoffs, where the Redmen lost to UW-La Crosse 28-13 at the UNI Dome. The 1991 Redmen defense was the best in school history, posting the No. 4 total defense in the country (183.5 yards per game) while allowing the seventh-fewest points (87). Led by Trent Nauholz and Rob Sinclair, the rushing offense ranked 13th in the nation (269.2 yards per game). Twelve players earned all-conference honors and Jim Williams was named the IIAC Coach of the Year.

1996

Simpson won its 10th IIAC football title with an unblemished 10-0 regular season mark, including 8-0 in the league. The program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Playoffs ended with a 21-18 loss to St. John’s, snapping a 13-game winning streak. Junior QB Brad Jorgensen was named IIAC MVP and Jim Williams earned Coach of the Year honors. Jorgensen threw for 1,953 yards and led the offense to a school record 459 points scored.

1997

Arguably the greatest season in school history, the 1997 Storm went 10-0 in the regular season, won the IIAC Championship and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs before losing to eventual-champion Mt. Union. The Storm won an exciting opening round game over Whitewater, getting the winning score on a 25-yard TD pass from Jorgensen to Corey Christensen with 36 seconds left. Simpson then went on to route Augsburg at home in the second round. Simpson set school records for total offense (6,829 yards), points (595), rushing yards (3,837), passing yards (2,931), first downs (295) and total plays (1,113). Jorgensen became the first player in IIAC history to win back-to-back MVP honors and Williams earned his fifth Coach of the Year accolade.

2003

The Storm went 9-1 and earned an at-large bid to the playoffs after finishing second in the IIAC. No. 20 Simpson lost a 26-20, double overtime heart-breaker No. 11 St. Norbert in the first round. Led by All-Americans Mike Donnenwerth (QB) and Dusty Kain (WR), the Simpson offense set school records for passing yards (3,540), attempts (422) and touchdowns (33). Donnenwerth set school marks for passing yards (3,461), attempts (413), and touchdowns (32). Kain set school records for receptions (93), yards (1,466) and TDs (14). Second-year head coach Jay Niemann’s defense generated 43 turnovers, led by All-American corner Kyle Westphal 10 INTs and six forced fumbles. Niemann took home IIAC Coach of the Year honors and Donnenwerth was named league MVP.

AD MINISTRATIO N

JAY SIMMONS COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Simpson College began its next generation of success when Jay Simmons took office in June 2013. He is the college’s 23rd president, succeeding the eight-year tenure of John Byrd. A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Simmons came to Simpson from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. He impressed the Simpson community with his proven leadership capability, broad academic experience, fund-raising success, ability to face challenges, work ethic and open and collaborative management style. “Dr. Simmons will bring to Simpson College exactly the right set of skills necessary to build on the momentum created by John Byrd’s eight years of leadership,” said Fred Hubbell, Chair of the Simpson Board of Trustees. “Simpson is in an enviable position of strength,” he added. “The addition of its leading edge curriculum, a near record enrollment and several major capital improvement projects provide an excellent

platform for Dr. Simmons to put his experience and expertise to work on behalf of the entire campus and the extended Simpson family.” Simmons holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Birmingham-Southern College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He holds Master’s and Doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Alabama. He and his wife, Jenne’, have two children, Samantha, who works for a graphic design company in Indianola, and Madison, a high school sophomore. At Iowa Wesleyan College, Simmons helped restructure enrollment, advancement and the college’s educational programs. He also led the college’s transition from a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) to Division III of the

BRIAN NIEMUTH DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

A benchmark for success in the Simpson athletic department as the women’s basketball coach, Brian Niemuth added the role of athletic director when he graduated from the interim tag in July 2013. Simpson President Jay Simmons made the announcement following Niemuth’s five-month appointment as the interim athletic director. “This is one of my first acts as Simpson’s president, and I couldn’t be more excited about it,” Simmons said. “Brian Niemuth is the right person to build on Simpson’s tradition of athletic success and student-athlete development and to move us forward. He’ll do a great job. He already has.” Niemuth also serves as the head women’s basketball coach, a position he has held for the past 28 seasons. The 2012-13 season was one of the most successful in school history, as the Storm reached the

NCAA. In addition, he recently helped the college meet a $3 million annual matching grant challenge, brought in an endowed chair for a position in the business department, reduced the discount rate and increased the ACT average for incoming students. Before accepting the Iowa Wesleyan College position, Simmons served from 1997 to 2008 as vice president for academic affairs and dean at LaGrange College in Georgia. While there, he updated faculty governance, expanded curriculum and program activities and increased international programs. Simmons has also served at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, where he was Dean of Liberal Arts, and at his alma mater, BirminghamSouthern College, where he was assistant to the dean and later assistant dean.

Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. It was also a momentous season for Niemuth, who became the 20th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 500 wins. He already was the most successful women’s basketball coach in Simpson College history, winning 11 Iowa Conference Championships and leading the team to 11 trips to the NCAA tournament. A seven-time Iowa Conference Coach of the Year, Niemuth hopes to build on the recent improvements made to the athletic department. “We have great momentum right now, and I want to help us grow the progress we’ve already made,” he said.

Before arriving at Simpson, Niemuth served as an assistant basketball coach at Park College in Kansas City, Mo., for two years; one with the men’s team and one with the women’s team. He was an assistant coach at Dallas Center-Grimes (Iowa) High School. He also served as an assistant baseball coach for Simpson from 1991-97. Niemuth grew up in Kansas City, and was an all-conference player and team co-captain at Park for two years. He also earned All-American honors in baseball for Park. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1988 from Grand View College in Des Moines and earned his master’s degree in sports management at Iowa State University during the summer of 1997. He and his wife, Beth, have a daughter, Brooke, who graduated from Simpson in 2015. The Niemuths reside in Altoona, Iowa.

TRADITION S

Nicknames and mascots have long played an important role in athletics and support for those teams which they represent. Many teams experience a variety of nicknames over the years and Simpson College is no different. The name game started near the turn of the century as the interest in college athletics grew, and spurred again in the 1990’s with the cultural sensitivity of nicknames and mascots under review by an entire nation. Earliest documentation of a mascot or cheer leader indicate the person leading the crowds was called “The Joshua.” This name was derived from a pep club of the late 1800’s. Yet at the time “The Joshua” was leading chants in Hopper Gymnasium, Simpson College had no official nickname for its athletic teams. The earliest names used were “Simpsonians” or “Simpsonites,” but neither sounded good nor caught on for an extended period of time. During the first decade of the 1900’s the Des Moines press referred to Simpson athletic teams as the “Methodists.” The name stuck for a while until the people from Iowa Wesleyan (also a Methodist affiliated school) insisted they had prior claim to the name and that they were more devoutly Methodist than the folks from Simpson. The Simpsonian (Simpson College student newspaper) called the teams the “Maple Leafs,” attempting to evoke pride from the school’s famed trees, but like previous names, it was short-lived. From 1910 to the early 1930’s, college publications pegged the athletic ROWDY ROOSTER teams with “Red Extinct and Gold” for a nickname, referring to the school colors. Unfortunately, the name was abstract and could not be used to label individual athletes or the team as a whole. In 1930, a college alumnus, John Horsley, ended years of indecision. His proposal, stated in the Simpsonian, suggested Simpson adopt the name “Red-

men.” Horsley cited Indian lore and traditions, picturesque vocabulary and easy pronunciation, as backing for his idea. It matched well with the school colors and no other team in the conference used it or had ever used it. Along with this name came the Indian mascot and other visual symbols associated with Indian traditions. Redmen would remain the nickname for many years. The mascot changed in 1968 when amid national debate and changing campus attitudes, certain symbols and ceremonies relating to Indian traditions were dropped. The crowning of a Big Chief, Indian Princess and Indian Brave were dropped from Homecoming activities, as well as the symbols such as the headdress. Although these ceremonies were commenced, throughout the 1970’s, the mascot leading the crowd at football games remained an Indian riding a horse. As the next decade approached, changes continued. In 1981, the name “Lady Reds” was adopted for female teams, while the male teams remained the “Redmen.” AnTHUNDERCAT other change that MIA since the early 2000s came in the early 1980’s was the use of Rowdy Rooster as the college’s mascot. Rowdy was a student dressed up in a red costume resembling a chicken whose identification with the names Redmen and Lady Reds remains a mystery to this day. Simpson decided in 1992 to drop the use of Redmen and Lady Reds as the school’s nicknames.

FORMER MASCOTS

36

2016 SIMPSON STORM FOOTBALL

The use of Redmen had been controversial for three prior decades and a change was needed. Simpson College president Stephen Jennings announced the name would be dropped out of moral necessity to oblige the wishes of Native American groups, who find such names offensive to their culture. What was once viewed as celebratory was now viewed as insensitive and Simpson would not ignore the wishes of Native Americans. The Native American protests against the Atlanta Braves baseball team and the use of “The tomahawk chop” during the World Series accelerated the internal debate. The name Lady Reds was also dropped at this point, and the search was on for a nickname without sexist distinction. Along with the nickname change came the last days of the mascot Rowdy Rooster. A task force composed of faculty, staff, students, alumni and trustees was formed to determine a new nickname for the school. After many meetings and suggestions, the name “Storm” was announced in April of 1992. Other finalists considered included the Cardinals, Owls, Reds, Red Wave and, once again, the Maple Leafs. Simpson’s new logo and look debuted at the Golden Circle Classic football game against Drake University in fall of 1992. The new mascot was not announced at this time. Simpson went without a mascot through the 1993-94 school year before the announcement and unveiling of Thundercat at a basketball game during the 1993-94 season.
