LETTER FROM THE EDITOR January is the time of year during which many people take stock of their lives and their goals. Often, this introspection encourages people to make change: we resolve to save more money, to lose weight, or to finally write that best-selling novel. There is no harm in this, of course. But sometimes, our own striving, our own need for change, our own dissatisfaction with the way things are can lead us to miss the blessings we already possess. In this way, life can pass us by. We forget to see, truly see, what lies in front of us. This month, Sims Nation Magazine celebrates our first anniversary, and in the spirit of new beginnings, we want to encourage our readers to practice radical self-love, self-care, selfacceptance, and body positivity. We want to encourage our readers to love and appreciate their bodies, to pamper themselves, to eat that piece of cake and to take the damn vacation. Between these pages, you’ll read about how Sims community giants such as Twitch Partner and EA Content Creator Simarchy, Sims Mobile EA Content Creator Karen Keren, and the wonderfully talented John Gylor practice positivity and radical acceptance in their own lives. Readers will also find stunning Create-aSim lookbooks which feature Sims of all sizes, shapes, and colors.

EDITOR'S LETTER

Each lookbook offers live links to custom content that celebrates vitiligo, cellulite, trans bodies, and differently abled bodies. While our build section does feature stunning gyms and spas, know that selflove does not begin and end with diet and exercise. Radical self-love encourages us to love our bodies at all ages and shapes, to look at our bodies and appreciate every inch of sinew that carries us through a life filled with slings and arrows. You are uniquely you, and you don’t need to change a damn thing. Thank you for an incredible year,

A. Em Editor-in-Chief

It took a bit for me to get into it and figure out what to do, but I quickly fell in love and spent the majority of my time learning how to build and watching other content creators. I then created a YouTube channel so I could share my builds with other Simmers and make new friends. I came up with my channel name, Simarchy, by combining two words - Sims and Anarchy. The freedom Sims gave me to escape my life, be super creative, and create any life I wanted, seemed like the perfect fit.

Simarchy: Honestly my viewers have helped me be more positive. From the moment I started creating content, everyone was so kind and supportive. We created our own community full of love, support, and creativity. When I started streaming I was going through a really rough time in my life, and the friendships I made really helped pull me out of a dark place and gave me something positive to look forward to. It brought a whole new meaning and purpose to my life, and all I want to do is give back to those who also need a friend. Anytime I have a rough day, I know they'll instantly cheer me up, and I do the same for them. As for my channel theme being mermaids and seahorses, I've always been drawn to the ocean. I moved to Florida from up north to escape the cold, and when I was surrounded by water I felt like I came alive for the first time.

MAKEOVERS AND MINIMALISM: A MOMENT WITH

John Gylor first burst onto the Twitter scene in March 2021.Young, talented, and smart, John quickly made use of his graphic design background to make serious waves in the Sim community through his eyepopping renders of Sims 4 townies. That is, John uses a special program called Blender to “render” two-dimensional images of premade Sims into threedimensional life. His depictions of such beloved Sim pre-mades as the Calientes, the Goths, and the Vatores have taken the Twitter scene by storm, garnering immense amounts of attention, mentions, and retweets. Sims Nation Magazine sat down with John to discover the secrets behind his artistic genius.

SIMS NATION MAGAZINE

Alaeryn: John, it is so great to talk to you

today! Thank you for agreeing to a Sims Nation Magazine interview! How were your holidays? DId you do anything special?

John: My holidays were fine. As usual, the holidays are kind of a passing thing for me these days. I ate a lot of food and celebrated with my parents, which was a lot of fun because I missed them a lot. But yeah, the holidays were fine, and I still get lots of warm and fuzzy feelings during them.

Alaeryn: Tell us more about yourself. Where

PAGE 16

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: You are well-known in the Sims

community for your deep understanding of Sims “townies,” the pre-made Sims that come with every Sims game. What made you begin rendering these beloved characters in Blender?

John: I am a new Sims player and, for me, just reading about the townies background or lore is not very fun. Rendering the townies forces me to read about them, which I find more engaging. I love to make my makeovers related to their lore, and when I first posted my townie render, I didn't expect it to garner attention.

are you from? When did you get your start with video games as a child?

However, I'm glad it did because now I find it so much fun, especially when people like [my work.]

John: I am John Gylor Paypa. I am 19 years old,

and I am from the Philippines. I study IT, and I am very much an introvert, but Twitter has kind of changed that. I definitely have a lot more confidence now. I started playing video games when I was about eight years old, and I played a lot of MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games) and shooter games. As I aged, my catalog expanded, and I got into horror games and strategy games.

which to work and why?

John: I really love working with the Goths and the Calientes. They have such a fun backstory that you can't help but make some spin-off ideas about them. My renders usually contain different sides of the premade Sims. The Calientes and Goth families have so much Sim-lore, they're very easily my favorite townies.

SIMS NATION MAGAZINE

Alaeryn: What are your best tips to Blender beginners and hopefuls?

John: Rendering in general is not hard, I assure people that it's very easy if you just follow the basic steps. My tip is to look at your renders through a photographer’s lens. Find the best poses, angles, lighting, and colors for your Sims. It really helps a lot in making your renders aesthetically pleasing.

Alaeryn: You’re also a graphic designer!

How is that going for you and how would you describe your graphic style?

John: Yes, I do graphic design and I've been doing fine with it. I still get a lot of clients and I'm really happy about it because I need a side job for college. My graphic style leans more on the minimalism side with the use of geometric patterns and pastel colors. [This is evident in my renders because] I usually just stick with plain backgrounds.

PAGE 17

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: What’s next for you? How can our readers best keep up with you and your amazing work?

John: My next step is probably making custom content and continuing my passion for renders. [I want to continue improving my renders] with every single release. I am mostly active on twitter @john_gylor, but I also have a Tumblr where I post occasionally @/johntdsimmer

PATIENCE AND POSITIVITY

A MOMENT WITH KAREN KEREN Karen Keren is one of those objectively unproblematic EA Creators who is a joy to both work with and watch. She started her work as a Sims Mobile content creator on YouTube. Documenting her splendid builds and sophisticated Sims, Karen’s YouTube channel quickly grew in popularity. Her soothing voiceover, meticulous editing, and genuine passion for the Sims Mobile community made her a fast fan favorite. Sims Nation Magazine connected with Karen to get to know her further, to discuss her views on staying positive despite setbacks, and to get the skinny on her hopes for the future of Sims Mobile.

Karen: Hey The Sims Nation Magazine Team! I'm wishing you wonderful 2022 and it is an honor to be featured! I'm doing well, just staying home safe playing video games. My holidays are great! I spent it with my family and our furbabies! I hope you're doing well too, Al!

Then, I started learning how to edit videos and write everything that comes to mind on what I would like to do while enjoying the game. In my spare time, I research and find inspiration on Pinterest, in movies, and on television shows for things to do in TSM. Growing a channel is difficult, but I truly enjoy doing it! My advice to those who want to start a YT channel is to be consistent in uploading videos. Then, I got my hands on The Sims 1 and started creating my dream life there with motherlode! Haha! I got the chance to play a little bit of The Sims 4 for a while but I got really busy with my career. Then in 2018, The Sims Mobile was released worldwide, and I couldn't get my hands off my phone anytime anywhere haha! My work is very technical and my only outlet for creativity is through building in TSM. brilliant EA Creators like Salix Cat, Simmerdown Mal, and Rachybop to create content for the Sims Mobile. What is this experience like?

Karen: It has been wonderful to be collaborating with Salix Cat, Simmerdown Mal, and Rachybop our goal is always to help the community! Sometimes it's a challenge for us to make content because of the sheer amount of information we receive and tight time constraints, but we make it work. Sharing content with Salix Cat and Simmerdown Mal is total bliss; we always communicate and share our thoughts. Most importantly, we look out for each other.

Alaeryn: What are your greatest hopes for Sims Mobile? What features do you hope to see in the future?

Karen: I hope The Sims Mobile will add more player levels, career stories, relationship stories, and hobby stories.I hope they will add options for removing old contacts and selling items. Of course, as a Builder, I would like to see more building features.

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers?

Karen: Pace yourself and keep on doing what you're passionate about. Spread kindness and love! Wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2022! Thank you so much, Alaeryn, and The Sims Nation Magazine Team!

Stay connected and message me on: But more than anything, I hope The Sims Mobile will (scratch that) MUST fix all persistent bugs. I'd prefer fewer events and a major BUG FIX UPDATE! I do hope for new wonderful things, but if the game is not playable, then how can we still enjoy it?

Alaeryn: This month, Sims Nation Magazine

highlights body positivity and ways we can be better to ourselves every day. How do you practice body positivity in your own life? How can Sims Mobile improve the player experience to promote body positivity in the game?

Karen: I focus on what my body can do and pace myself, I practice intermittent fasting 16:8, drink lots of water, and stretch regularly. It's been three years since I logged out of my personal social media accounts because I have filtered what I want to see in my social media feeds. I surround myself with people who create positive vibes. I encourage everyone to focus on your strength. A friend once told me this, and so I'm telling the readers this too: "You are gorgeous inside and out." In recent updates, The Sims Mobile added a few positive tasks to the Sim Festival like 'state daily affirmations' and 'style yourself.' Having these tasks in-game creates awareness but it would be great if there was a story that Sims can do with encouraging each other to practice body positivity.

BETTER BUILD TIPS WITH MAIAMAKES

It's out with the old and in with the new room challenges this 2022! If you don't know what room challenges are, they're build challenges in the Sims community hosted by creators and players to fill a room shell like a shell challenge but smaller. They usually have a theme or a set of rules, but you can go crazy on clutter and details as much as you want. That's why room challenges are so fun to do in a short amount of time! Sometimes if you're lucky, you can win a Sims pack or kit when you win the room challenge! It can be hard to stand out but here are some tips on how to bag your first room challenge this year.

Nothing beats a build with a backstory. Your story can be fictional or real, original or recreated - any story you add in your description makes a build more intriguing to its viewers. Plus, the challenge host spends more time looking at your build!

Room: Arriety's Room Challenge: #MAIAmakesstories (MAIAmakes) Fact: the winner of this challenge I hosted had a full original story that came with the build!

2. Be original!

Originality comes from your experience that not a lot of other Simmers have. Get inspired from your country, your culture, or even your own home and workplace. Your room definitely won't be like the others!

3. Be loud!

If you're gonna join a challenge, you might as well be the most extra, most eccentric, and most noticeable room in the gallery. Use colors that pop out like red or neons. Add a glamorous centerpiece that draws more attention to your entry.

Room: Rouge de Chambre Challenge: #paszcolorpsych (paszerine)

4. Be you!

Of course, you're making this room, so why not imagine your Simself living in it? Don't be pressured to compete with other builders. It's always great to show your own personality in a build. In the end, a room you genuinely like and created is all that matters.

Room: NYC Dream Desk Challenge: #plummydeskidea (plummysims)

BLACK DRAGON SPA BY ALAERYN

The self-care movement is one I sincerely hope stays around a good long time. Many countries around the globe cling to the classic tenets of capitalism: working long hours to the detriment of both family and self, wealth accumulation as chief aspiration, and endless consumption as a means to happiness. Recently, both millennials and gen z have tapped into the magic that is a deep self-appreciation and determination. They have broken the appearance of work, tearing down and out of cubicles and forging ahead with self-made businesses. They have placed a premium on not only working well for a living wage but also taking much needed vacations, mental health days, and physical breaks as much as possible. The Black Dragon Spa is a bright classy spa that encourages its patrons to get in touch with their own power via relaxation, yoga, massage, and nail services. By caring for body, patrons care for their minds and souls too. This particular build contains both Maxis-crafted furniture alongside a few clean, classy selections of custom content. I managed to use Spa Day, Blooming Rooms Kit, Fitness Stuff Pack, Industrial Loft Kit, and yes - Journey to Batuu Game Pack in this particular build. Enjoy, and love yourself first.
