EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ANIMAL CROSSING YOUTUBE STAR

ANGRY COCONUT!

FROM THE EDITOR April is indeed the cruelest month.

Tara was young, full of life, and beloved by all who met her. She regularly checked in on her friends, was eager to learn new things, and she loved to create in Sims. There was– and I mean this truly – not a bad bone in her body. She was good. She was kind. She was one of those unique souls who was unabashedly unproblematic. She will be missed by many, and her spirit will linger not only with those who loved her on our esteemed staff, but by the Sims community at large.

April has always been a time of transition, when much of the world begins changing from one season into the next. The northern hemisphere battles through spring’s blustery rains and varied chill to finally emerge into the warmth that is early summer and the beach-ready days of May. Meanwhile, our neighbors to the south prepare to plunge into the hard-nosed cold of winter with steadily dropping temperatures.

This month, Sims Nation Magazine soldiers on through loss in order to honor the Asian and Pacific Islander Simmers in our community. We urge the community to #StopAsianHate, to embrace the representation of Asians in our games in our media, and to think long upon the amazing contributions of Asians to our broader culture in general.

I say all this, of course, to express that change is in the air. It is the only element of our lives that we can always count on; once we’ve hit a stride, life turns on a dime. This Sims Nation Magazine suffered a devastating blow to our close-knit team of creators. OhTaraTara, a well-known Simmer and talented storyteller, suddenly passed away from cardiac arrest this month. It is during these moments that we often hang laurels on our heroes, on the ones we have loved and lost, but it is particularly important in this moment. This loss, this gutpunch, was one that seemed incredibly unfair.

Thank you for sticking with us, and love your loved ones. Sincerely,

A. Em

SPRING FORWARD IN ANIMAL CROSSING!

TEAR IT UP AND TRY AGAIN A MOMENT WITH ANGRY COCONUT

Angry Coconut is one of those YouTubers who provides the quality, no-holds-barred entertainment that can keep a viewer cackling for hours on end. His side-splitting wit, honest takes, and the occasional RuPaul’s Drag Race commentary has kept his loyal viewers returning day-after-day. And this is no small feat: Angry Coconut, known to many as “Vis,” has managed to continue churning out high-quality Animal Crossing content long after New Horizons first released in March 2020. And while there are many streamers who continue to love and support Animal Crossing through content releases, there are few who produce content as downright engaging. When Vis plays Animal Crossing, he breathes new life into the game’s iconic villagers, endowing them with fresh personalities, unique voices, and sometimes unsavory dramatics. His villagers fall in love, betray each other, whine, pout, and are sometimes genuinely messy. And this is to say nothing of Vis’s jaw-dropping Animal Crossing builds. In Animal Crossing, players not only get to decorate the own homes and (with the help of the downloadable content Happy Home Paradise) the homes of their adorable villagers, but they also get to–most notably–change the very layout of their deserted island, bending rivers and building cliffs, planting trees and uprooting weeds, to make their island as unique as possible. Vis is well-known in the Animal Crossing community as a Grade-A island decorator. His island builds are both rustic and quirky, with sunken waterfalls and abandoned buildings. He has professed inspiration from many Animal Crossing builders and such gorgeous animated films such as those produced by Studio Ghibli. But not even his villagers’ storylines or gorgeous builds can begin to truly define Vis as a streamer. Vis, as a content creator, constantly shows his viewers that it is okay to try something and tear it down, to hit the reset button, and to show one’s true self at all times, no matter how messy. It is the messiness that we love about Vis, after all, and as he has come into his own as a bonafide entertainer, he’s brought us along on that self-discovery ride. Sims Nation Magazine sat down with Vis to discuss what’s next for him, what’s next for Animal Crossing, and the differences between Animal Crossing and the Sims. SIMS NATION MAGAZINE

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: Vis! We are so honored to speak with you as huge fans of your Animal Crossing YouTube channel! You’ve amassed such a big following with over 47,000 subscribers! How has this journey been for you?

My two lovely dogs are also doing well of course!! And now that I have a facecam, all they want to do is hog the spotlight and be in my room every time I record a video which is hilarious of course. Alaeryn: You grew up in Canada as a vivacious gamer of color - what were your first games? How has your life thus far shaped how you experience games?

Vis: Hello, hello! It is such a joy to be a part of this magazine and I am so happy to be included in this month’s issue, thank you so much! I’ve only been creating content for just under two years so to be where I am now has been such a surprise. I never thought that I would be so close to 50,000 subscribers this soon and I am grateful for everyone who supports and loves my content. And for someone who is quite shy and quiet in real life (which may be surprising to some), I am always surprised when watching my old videos and comparing them to the ones I make now. To see how much I have opened up in such a short span of time, as well as how much louder I am now, is very rewarding and something I am proud of.

Vis: Now even though I am a huge Nintendo fan, the first ever game series I fell in love with was Sonic the Hedgehog! Sonic Riders on the PS2 was actually the first game I properly played, which I feel like is such a random game to begin with, but I was in love with it anyway. And this might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel that it is still one of the best Sonic games to date!! My life has shaped my experience with games for sure. Growing up, and even to this day, I am someone who doesn’t really leave the house, not for any necessary reason, I just love staying at home all day. Because of that, I do have a lot of free time which was spent playing video games, and I feel like that was time well spent! And, as someone who has an adventurous spirit, I’ve always wanted to go around the world and embark on wild journeys and see new things as a kid. This was especially motivated by the number of movies and TV shows I watched growing up and seeing all these characters embarking on their own adventures. But sadly, I couldn’t do so, mainly because I was a child, and no one let’s children do anything on their own. But also financially, my family was not able to afford the luxury of traveling whenever we wanted to. So that led me to resort to the next best thing, video games!

Alaeryn: Tell us about yourself! How is school? How are your pups? Vis: My name is Vis, and I am a 22-yearold dude who loves to play video games, especially Animal Crossing of course! I currently exist in Toronto, Canada and when it came to the creation of Angry Coconut, it just happened on a whim. I saw many other Animal Crossing creators whom I loved and seeing what they did inspired me to spontaneously buy a capture card one night, and the rest was history. School is something that I am still in, luckily not for much longer as it is my final semester before I graduate!!!! After that I am free and hopefully, I’ll have more time to dedicate to my channel.

Every time my parents bought a new game for me, I devoured it to its fullest, exploring everything I was able to and essentially transporting myself into the world I was playing in. It helped satisfy that itch for adventure as a child, without having to leave my living room! Alaeryn: What draws you, in particular, to Animal Crossing as a franchise? How does it compare to other “simulators” to you? That is, what about Animal Crossing keeps you coming back as opposed to games like Stardew Valley or Sims? Vis: The main reason why I love Animal Crossing is simply just because of the vibes. City Folk on the Wii was the first game I played when I was 9 years old and when I booted it up for the first time and heard the opening music, I knew that the game was going to be something I would sink many hours into. Looking back now, it is safe to say the graphics were a bit crunchy; however at the time, I remember being obsessed with them. The little fish silhouettes in the water, the way the fruits looked on the trees, the cicadas on the trees… they were all aesthetically pleasing to me. I do believe that good graphics are not the most important aspect of a video game, and there are many good games that don’t have good graphics (Pokémon Legends: Arceus for example), however I always feel that one of the best aspects of Animal Crossing, especially in New Horizons, are the graphics. I believe that with life simulators in general, when the game is pleasing to the eye, it is easier for someone to immerse themselves into the world and feel as if they are a part of it.

Alaeryn: What I (and many others!) love about your brand of gaming is that you are unflinchingly hilarious. Your unique way of transforming an adorable game into a side-splittingly messy experience cannot be overstated. How did you come to discover your unique voice over the years? Vis: It is no secret that I love the dramatics, I believe it’s what makes life more exciting! And when it comes to combining drama with Animal Crossing, a lot of the credit must be given to TheAmandaFiles, another Animal Crossing content creator who is also a friend of mine! We play the game in such a similar way, and seeing her document her dramatic stories with her villagers on her channel, and seeing others share theirs in the comments made me realize that my way of playing the game was not something that I only did. She really inspired the shift in my content, and I do not believe that it would be where it is today if it weren’t for her videos! When it came to discovering my voice, it was a journey, one that I’m still on. It is quite hard to answer the question of how I found it because honestly? When looking back at the journey so far, it feels as if it just happened on its own. Becoming more confident in myself as I age and letting go of the fear of looking stupid were factors that contributed to it for sure. But I know that one rule I always had with my videos is to provide a safe environment and try to make my viewers laugh as much as they can.

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: There are many interesting facets of Animal Crossing gameplay, but you are known well in the community for your builds. What advice do you have for aspiring builders who are just starting out in Animal Crossing?

Alaeryn; Nintendo unfortunately announced it will no longer release major updates for New Horizons, leaving many to speculate that a new Animal Crossing game could be in development. What are your hopes for the next iteration of Animal Crossing?

Vis: The most important thing to keep in mind when building in Animal Crossing is to have patience! When starting out, being able to perfectly create something on the first try is quite hard to do. Don’t be afraid to tear something down and try again if you feel like doing so. Taking inspiration from others is also very helpful, we live in the age of social media and many platforms such as Instagram and Twitter are home to many accounts who post their awesome work for others to see. I can attest to this since a lot of my builds are 100% inspired by many of those accounts and I know for a fact that I wouldn’t love building in Animal Crossing as much as I do if it weren’t for other people sharing their creativity. Alaeryn: We have to get some of the obligatory Animal Crossing questions in! It is well known that you love Lazy villagers, particularly the Lazy dogs. Who is your favorite Animal Crossing villager of all time? Favorite NPC? Favorite island theme?

Vis: When it comes to the designing aspect, the one feature I hope for is the ability to place items outside of the grid, like the way we’re able to alt-place in The Sims. Another feature I hope for in the next game is the ability to finally change our player’s name without having to reset the save entirely. It seems like such a minor thing to some, but it can go a long way in creating a safe environment for everyone to play in, especially when considering trans players who are forced to reset their islands in order to play without their deadname. Nintendo has done so much to create a game that is inclusive for many people already, but when it comes to diversity, there is always room for improvement. Including adding even more hairstyles, skin tones, and other facial features so that way, more players can feel represented in the game.

Vis: There are so many awesome villagers in the game, and lazy dogs are the best kind. But ever since I was a kid, Wolfgang has had a special place in my heart. He is literally everything I love: he’s blue, he’s a wolf (my favorite animal), and he shares a birthday with me as well! I will never forget how 10 years after he moved out of my town in City Folk, I found him on my first ever villager hunt on my channel with only 10 Nook Mile Tickets; it felt like fate!

WE ARE THE REVOLUTION

Alaeryn: What features of previous Animal Crossing games do you hope Nintendo brings back to the Animal Crossing franchise?

Alaeryn: Thank you again so much for speaking with us! Is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers? Vis: For anyone who is hoping to start their journey on Youtube, just do it. I started mine on a whim and don’t regret it for sure. It may feel unmotivating at first, but remembering how large of a platform Youtube is! If you’re even able to just get 1 stranger to watch your video, that is something worth celebrating! And don’t be afraid to celebrate any milestone you reach no matter how small. I still celebrate every 100 subscribers to this day and it helps make the journey feel more fulfilling!

Vis: Although Animal Crossing has drastically improved on the creative aspects of the game, I truly believe that a lot of the charm from the older games is missing. And I feel that the lack of the unique, witty dialogue from Population Growing, and Wild World is the main reason for this. I hope that in the next iteration, the game can bring back dialogue that is a little more unfiltered and more witty than the dialogue we have now that just feels “copy and paste.” Alaeryn: You’ve started your Twitch journey! What can viewers expect from you on Twitch? How do you plan to expand your brand? Vis: I am very nervous to be on Twitch, but also very excited! I’m hoping that with live streaming, it allows people to feel even more connected with me, especially since they’ll be seeing an unedited version of me. Hopefully with Twitch, I’m able to expand the Angry Coconut brand and branch out into other games, such as The Sims, Pokémon, and lots of other games as well. Since I plan on streaming a lot of variety content alongside Animal Crossing. And with that, I’m also launching another channel where I plan on posting highlights from streams as well as shifting my variety content onto it as well. Hopefully viewers are excited as I am for this next step!

BETTER BUILD TIPS: ASIAN HOMES BY MAIAMAKES

A GUIDE TO ASIAN HOMES Celebrating AAPI month, we look more into how an Asian home is built. A traditional Asian house may feel outdated to some, but their general rule of ‘form follows function’ still holds in many modern homes, so let’s try this in the Sims!

1. OPEN FLOOR PLANS Compared to American and European homes, Asian homes use doors and walkways instead of walls to separate rooms. Open layouts encourage ventilation and a productive workflow in between spaces that intertwine daily activities and chores. Use wide sliding doors, half-walls, or spandrels to keep this flow going.

2. MATERIALS Asian homes incorporate vernacular interior design and architecture by using natural materials derived from their surrounding environment. The use of wood, bamboo, rattan (wicker), thatch, clay, ceramic tiles, iron, and even seashells is common due to function and cultural symbolism. Find build items with similar materials in Island Living, Snow Escape, and Jungle Adventure.

SIMS NATION MAGAZINE

27

BUILD THE REVOLUTION

3. SMALL SPACES Asian countries often have little living space, so people find ways to transform their interiors into multi-functional rooms. Keeping in mind an open layout, make an LDK room (living, dining, kitchen) the heart of your home. You can switch from Live Mode to Build Mode to change the furniture configuration of the room from time to time if you have a social event or if you want to turn it into a bedroom.

4. OUTDOOR-INDOORS Withstanding extreme cold and heat, these homes must be equipped to adapt to their climate. Their interesting structures always consider ventilation, air circulation, and natural lighting that is built around nature. Add outdoor spaces such as central courtyards, balconies, and terraces for your Sims to socialize and do their housework. Switch your closed windows and doors for open-shuttered windows and archways. Liven your home with just the right amount of greenery - not too much to attract insects in a tropical climate.

SIMS NATION MAGAZINE

5. SPECIAL FEATURES

Every Asian home still differs from each other. Each country has its own unique culture and each region has its own customs. May it be an altar, an ornate motif, or furniture with a special function, these important yet often overlooked details truly complete your build. Look up some reference photos of notable interior and structural elements of a house and try to replicate them by combining different clutter and decor pieces. A little extra effort and research can go a long way in honoring the beautiful and culturally significant features of Asian interiors.

ANGELA AND LILITH PLEASANT’S OVERLOOKED ASIAN HERITAGE By Thee 1sland Simmer A few years ago, I got the bright idea to create a Sims 4 machinima based on iconic characters from across The Sims franchises. Working on this project gave me an opportunity to re-imagine the lore in The Sims 4 since there currently isn’t any related to many beloved Sims families. Once I developed the storylines, it was time for me to:

1) makeover the existing Sims and 2) create the Townie Sims who are not in The Sims 4 but who were featured in previous games.

The Pleasants are one of the starring families in this upcoming machinima (and one of my favorite families in general). The Pleasant twins were already in the game thanks to The Sims 4: Discover University, so I started with their makeovers first. As I sat and thought about each twin’s personality, history, and appearance, I realized that a seemingly major aspect of their identity has been virtually non-existent. The twins are part-Asian.

It is widely-known that Mary-Sue Pleasant was adopted by the Oldies as a toddler and that she is of Asian descent. But that is the only way many of us would know, especially since later iterations of The Sims didn’t make her Asian features very prominent. I’ll admit that I was happy (and a bit surprised) to see that most –but not all – versions of Mary Sue on the gallery acknowledged her Asian ancestry. But that’s where it usually stops. Despite being part-Asian, Lilith and Angela Pleasant are almost never depicted as such. The only real reference to Mary-Sue being Asian in The Sims is a one sentence descriptor, and there is no such descriptor to be found for the twins.

Realistically, being Asian is and should be a major part of their identity. But their Asian heritage is not reflected in any of their clothing, features, or interests. Even The Sims team themselves haven’t incorporated it into the twins’ appearance or background when they added them to Sims 4. When I see gameplay and stories that include one or both Pleasant twins having children, their Asian ancestry is almost never reflected in them.

After I came to this realization, I made it my mission to make sure that Mary Sue and the twins’ Asian heritage is highlighted since they are stars in my show.

Mary Sue Pleasant Thanks to Sims 4: Snowy Escape and a base game update for Asian eye presets in May 2021, I was able to make some changes to Mary-Sue’s appearance that emphasized her Asian heritage. I used hairs from the Snowy Escape pack and played around with the various eye presets. I also tweaked her skin tone, the shape of her face, and her head shape.

Angela Pleasant I changed Angela’s eye shape, but she and her sister kept their father’s hair color. Let’s be honest the hair color is iconic. I also made some small tweaks to her skin color, the eye position, her nose, her overall head shape, her cheeks. In my game, her fashion choices are not as edgy as her sister’s, but she loves luxury brands like Chanel, Gucci and Dior.

Lilith Pleasant I wanted to make the twins look slightly different from each other, so I made different changes for Lilith. I still changed her skin tone, eye preset, and eye position, but I didn’t manipulate her face as much. Acknowledging the lore behind Lilith’s upbringing and personality, I thought it would be appropriate for her to show her love for her heritage through her fashion. In my story, Lilith is obsessed with streetwear, particularly Korean and Chinese-inspired streetwear, which she shows through her hair, makeup, and clothing. With all the East Asian representation in the game, I hope to see more Simmers who play with the Pleasants lean into their heritage and make their gameplay richer by incorporating their culture. After all, celebrating our differences is what makes our experience on this floating rock called Earth more fun!

Machinima Highlight “The Fletcher Legacy” BY OBIGEM

ABOUT THE FLETCHER LEGACY:

When the Fletcher Legacy began, it was not a legacy save at all! The original save was actually a spin off from the very first Sims 4 save I created when I began playing the game on PC. It centered around Andrea Nichols, her best friend, Melody Pike, and Melody’s daughter, Mimi. Andrea was a university student with the big dream of graduating with her degree in biology and entering the medical field as a doctor; meanwhile, Melody was a single mother with a deadbeat baby’s father. Melody was trying to get her life back on track after her mother kicked her out with nowhere to go. Andrea was Melody’s shoulder to lean on; she offered her a place in her apartment so she could raise her daughter and get her life back on track. But the two leaned on each other quite a bit as they both figured their lives out. The Fletcher Legacy sprouted from this story’s culmination. Where do we go from here now that Andrea is engaged, graduated and Melody has effectively gotten a degree of her own and has learned to sustain herself through her paintings? They’ve made it, right? Well…

STORY SYNOPSIS:

Andrea and Cameron Fletcher are now married and starting their lives together in Oasis Springs. Everything seems grand and golden at first, but it quickly becomes apparent that both have a lot of learning and growing to do when it comes to how to balance married life with career advancement, parenthood, and learning to be each other’s number one confidantes. On the other side of the legacy is Andrea’s best friend Melody, who also has some learning and growing to do as she figures out how to love and let others in. Now that she doesn’t have her best friend for constant emotional support, how can Melody learn to let herself love?

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT — ANDREA FLETCHER

Our heroine and principle protagonist, Andrea is an ambitious perfectionist who is always racking her brain for creative solutions to all of her life’s problems. In a perfect world, she’d always know the right thing to say and do and every moment would be ideal and perfectly executed. But part of Andrea’s plight is learning that her penchant for striving for perfection is her biggest flaw holding her back.

CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT — MELODY PIKE

In many ways, Melody is the secondary lead of this story with an arc just as important as Andrea’s. Melody didn’t have the best of upbringings, and you’d never know it because she makes it a point to not talk about it if she can help it. Melody’s go-to-move is to cover up her less than ideal and chaotic childhood with jokes. She shields herself with a smile because underneath the snarkiness is a person who’s been wounded in both life and love; she is still very much afraid to let anyone in.

THE FUJII LEGACY BY CHYSIMMER

The Fujii Legacy was inspired by the “Incheon Arrivals” kit. I had this couple in mind already living in Mt. Komorebi, and they were perfect for this legacy I wanted to do. Even though this was just a free play “gameplay” style story for my Twitter, it was turning out to be great for my off-camera experience to help my storytelling, too. Also, this kit was the main reason I started playing again fully with a Sim couple. Just like that, a story generated into perfection in my head.

Maddox and Amara met in college where he was studying to be an architect and Amara was studying fashion and business. From there the sparks flew! After graduation, they moved back to Maddox's hometown in Mt. Komorebi. He ended up becoming a chef and dropped his dream of architecture. I followed these Sims, allowing them to live their pixeled lives freely and without mods. Maddox worked hard to provide for both of them; the two eventually moved from a small 20x15 rental home to a 30x20 classically styled Japanese home that he designed. Over time he mastered his cooking skills and became a master chef at his very own restaurant in the heart of Mt Komorebi.

As for Amara, her fashion brand took off as she was a stylist to celebrities who came to Mt. Komorebi for business or events. Her family thought she would be a lawyer because she could argue anyone or persuade anyone to agree with her; she had a natural gift for litigation, but her heart was in fashion and it showed. Both of them excelled in their careers!.

Married life was amazing until Amara became pregnant with their first child and it brought her career to a halt. The birth of their baby boy was a roller coaster of emotions for them both, but they managed to take on life and their careers with their new addition. This legacy is ongoing and still one I’m proud of that’s so close to my Sim heart.

Who is IzzyMGames?

Chronicles of a Rich Man’s Wife

I have been a Simmer since day one. I still remember the excitement of buying my first Xbox console and purchasing the Sims 1! I immediately fell in love with the game. But what I love most is storytelling. Storytelling has been a passion of mine since I was a child. When I was a kid, I shared pages and pages of stories with my family; as I watched them read what I’d written, I knew that this was the beginning of a lifetime goal I would never let go.

This was my very first story after several attempts at getting my Sim-series off the ground. After creating the characters in CAS, I knew, just by looking at my characters, where their story would go and how it would end: love triangles, gangs, revenge, jealousy, and murder.

Story Synopsis The Chronicles of a Rich Man’s Wife is based on the world of gang culture. It is filled with power struggles, love triangles, and jealousy. In this twoseason Simseries, the drama unfolds as a rollercoaster ride of emotions in each episode. The plot of the story thickens with flashbacks of the past leading up to murder of attorney Phillip Rowe. In present time, we watch the court trials and speculate upon the fate of the characters involved.

I’ve made several attempts at machinimamaking for the Sims 2 but no success. The Sims 4 opened the door to machinimas with my first series “The Chronicles of a Rich Man’s Wife."

In conclusion While there are many characters in this particular series, Chronicles of a Rich Man’s Wife rotates between the three major characters- Aletha, Aundre, and Phillip. Viewers will witness Aundre’s imprisonment, his ensuing trial, and discover who murdered Phillip Rowe through flashbacks and testimonies. There are only six episodes left! Catch up with The Chronicles of a Rich Man’s Wife today!

During the machinima, Aletha struggles to find the love she so desperately wants, and she sometimes falls for the wrong men, but during that search, she finds her soulmate.

About Aundre Chance This Spanish-Jamaican Gang leader of Del Sol Valley’s 15th street, Aundre oozes bad boy sexiness that has women and men swarming like bees to honey. Aundre's main objective is to keep 15th gang safe and intact, but his dangerous, jealous ex keeps getting in the way.

About Gia Macavich Gia's obsession for Aundre started organically in-game! While posing for pictures with her boyfriend Tony (a leader of the Los Cosa Gang), Gia autonomously broke out of her pose and asked Aundre to fool around. (This is no lie) I just knew this chick had given me a storyline! After all, Los Cosa Gang is 15th Street Gang’s rival! Gia dates Tony Hall but remains in an “entanglement” with Aundre. She soon becomes pregnant, and Gia tells Aundre he’s the father, which is far from the truth. SIMS NATION MAGAZINE
