A NEW GATEWAY FOR EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS

PHOTOGRAPHS ISSUE NO. III

PORTRAIT - FASHION -LIFESTYLE - TRAVEL

QUARTERLY

Portrait

The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

O

h yes! Finally, I was able to finish this 3rd issue. It may have been a little late but still, it needs to be published, seen and shared. For this issue, I had a lot of challenges due to tons of client projects, so, doing the layout and having the contents organized ate my time. Having said that, as I do more client projects, it taught me unknowingly about new layout presentations, design and viewer's perspective. It taught me as well to not just look as an artist would look at a piece of art face value, but instead, try looking further and see your work from a different perspective, as if that person is not into art, poetry, and story. Anyway, to cut the story short, I hope this new and improved magazine layout gave justice in showcasing fellow photography lovers, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and professionals about their craft. Just to remind our viewers, the main aim of this magazine is to promote photography not just locally but internationally as well. Photography is an art that captures moments of sadness, guilt, desire, awkwardness, happiness, and most of all, LOVE. I do hope that you all find inspiration from our contributors for this issue. And hopefully for the next issue, you’ll see your work being showcased too. So yeah, keep shooting, practice and make your own piece of art. Remember, BE CREATIVE, EXPERIMENT, LEARN, COMMUNICATE, SHARE, COLLABORATE and INSPIRE.

Nadine PACIS

I

'm Michaela Nadine Pacis, a newcomer in Photography. Though, I've been knowledgeable about the basics for a few years now, I've only come to love photography a few months ago, when I started taking photos of people in their element. The photographs I'm submitting aren't just ordinary fun-shoot photographs for me. In fact I was contemplating on submitting this for portraits.

A little backstory on my submissions, these photos are special for my muses because I take photos of them in settings they are passionate about. And these photos become special to me because these are the ones that touched them the most. Their passion, as well as mine, is essentially my inspiration in art. I think art (or more particularly, photography) is important because it captures and freezes important moments, scenes, and ideas. Photography immortalizes beauty, whether they be living or non-living, concrete or abstract. In turn, it sparks inspiration in everyone. That being said, I would like to thank my muses, for sharing with me their passions. I feel like I need to tell their stories as well. Yam Jawad, my first muse, was the first person that sparked my love for photography. She invited me to tour museums with her. In the end, I guess I was more interested in her love for paintings, than the paintings themselves. Ian Ricafort, my cousin, will be an interior designer in a couple of years. Together with Yam Jawad, and another friend who was familiar with the area, we went to Pinto Museum, a gallery with wonderful interiors that got him excited quickly. Pia Perez, my old friend, is a true aspiring model but felt as if photographers always categorize her as soft and "dainty." I told her I'd be willing to try and bring out her edginess. That's all. I hope my humble craft makes it to your magazine. If it doesn't it's alright. It will only push me to do better and craft better stories. But I thank you for the time you've given to check out my work! Jhe Olaño

PORTRAIT & COSPLAY PHOTOGRAPHER

"Hi! My name is Jhe, 27 years of age, I am a cosplay and fashion photographer from Philippines. I love to travel, watch animé, and play online games." SM : When did you start your photography journey? And what do you love about taking photos? JHE : I started my journey as a photographer 5 years ago with my very first camera buddy named "animus". I fell in love first with street photography then ventured to photographing cosplays and now, fashion. One of the many reasons why I love taking photos is the fact that I am able to meet people from different walks of life and seeing the smiles on their faces whenever I'd show them my works. It is more than enough to make my day, and some of them became really good friends of mine. I've always viewed photography as fulfilling and fun. To me, it matters a lot when everyone involved in a shoot enjoys the process. At the end of the day, it's still a hobby. Another reason why I love doing this is being able to get the most out of capturing breathtaking sceneries whenever there's a chance to go around. I believe that the experiences and memories stay on the captured image as time goes by.

SM : Also, please include the people who needs credit or thanks (guide, mentors, groups, model, hair stylist, make-up artist, designer, stylist, etc.). JHE : I would like to thank Mr. Richie dela Merced. He is one of my mentors when I was starting photography. Thanks as well to Mr. Allan Mendoza for always sharing his knowledge and helping me whenever I have a shoot. To all of my cosplayer/cosplay photographer friends, I can't name them all haha, thank you so much for collaborating with me and helping me promote cosplay not only in the Philippines but also the other parts of the world. To my good hair and make up artist friend, Celine Cabatingan, and to all my models, especially those people behind these favorite shots of mine: Jasmine Sapitan, Audrey See, Dasuri Choi, Leny Ming, Judie Chang, Maigee Bagasan, Mayumi Gomez, and Angel Ching Navas, thank you so much for helping/collaborating with me. I cannot produce these images without all your help.

SM : Include a short description or story about the photos attached to this email, and why is creating art on every image important to you? What inspired you? JHE : These sets of pictures express a lot of emotion and drama in line with the place and time the photos were taken. I love taking pictures during the golden hour as I am able to utilize the natural light coming from the sun. It is very important for me to create a story and/or art on every picture I take because I want the viewer to be curious. I want their thoughts to dwell on the image as if it's telling them something.

You can check out my works at the following platforms: Facebook page: www.facebook.com/s0ldierfirstclass Deviantart page: kurorochan.deviantart.com/

My source of inspiration are exactly the people I collaborate/work with. My friends, mentors, stylists, makeupartists, co-photographers, models, etc. That feeling of fulfillment you share with them whenever the team pulled off a good shot is priceless.

"

Luis Dalton

Photography is a sacred and important thing. The pictures we make may be the last we take of any given subject. Tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us. We all owe a death. Both the photographer and the photographer’s subject will pass on. It just makes sense that we should do our very best to make every photo count. There are NO insignificant photographs – period. None. They all matter. They’re all important one way or another. —Scott Bourne

"

I got interested in photography when I was in college, and remembering my first camera as a Canon 400d. Back then, I joined open photo shoots, car shows and anime conventions to practice my craft. What I like about photography is the continuous process of learning, and then meeting new people, creating art and having fun along the way. Right now, I'm expanding my knowledge through books, watching videos online and shooting once in a while. I love shooting portraits of women and children, capturing their emotions by way of subtle laughs, smiles, quirky movements, and acting naturally in front of the camera. To me, drawing from that inspiration is already creating beautiful imagery. I've always looked up to the works of Aaron Nace, Rosie Hardy and Tim Walker. I like how they materialize their vision through creating extraordinary and powerful images, something I yearn to do. Credits to the hair and make up artists, stylist, models and friends I have worked with. I hope we can continue creating images.

W

e are fortunate to have been invited to Balesin by a fellow Librodo 5-Star member, Mr. Myke Chiang, the owner of DHQ Studios who happens to be a member of the exclusive club.

However, the weather was uncooperative during our stay on the island. Rain was pouring hard and a supposed outdoor shoot was impossible. Fortunately, the sun came out on the last day for a short period of time revealing the beauty the island has to offer. Despite the downpour, and the fact that we don't have any makeup artists, stylists and lighting equipment available, the shoot happened, and it was fun. John Phillip Santos PORTRAIT & FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER

"Art does not only help us express and bring our ideas into a form but it also gives us a way to help and inspire others.”

I

am John Phillip Santos, the guy behind J-Phil Photography. I’m a portrait & fashion photographer from Pasig City, Philippines.

One thing I really love about photography is its ability to bring confidence and joy to a person. The authentic smile that emerge whenever they see the shoot's outcome gives me fulfillment. I know it could be expressed through other means but I think beauty shots stand out when it comes to serving that purpose. It is where you focus on the person's facial splendor and need not be bothered by clothing, accessories or concept. As a photographer and retoucher, I always bear in mind to make each output as realistic as possible. To make them not think that they're only beautiful because of the difference in light and editing. “Bringing out the best realistic you”. My inspiration for this idea is a video by "Help-Portrait”, where I saw people so happy to be photographed. Some even regain self-esteem after seeing their photos. This is where I was able to see what I can do with photography. Art does not only help us express and bring our ideas into a form but it also gives us a way to help and inspire others.

"A good portrait is incredibly hard to create, there is too much temptation to pander to the individual rather than portray them as they really were." - Philippe Halsman

My work is an ongoing experience of learning photography, graphic designs, and idea-based imagery. I personally continue to explore the creative potential of digital imagery and innovation. Alongside my personal works, I continue to produce images for commercial and various clienteles. Also, I’m an avid fan of Japanese cartoons (MANGA/ ANIME). I currently am learning the art of shooting landscapes both urban and nature. For now, the images on the following pages are my contribution for this issue. Harold Dave Narte LANDSCAPE AND TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER

“Don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.” — David Alan Harvey

A

side from landscapes, Mono Photography has always held a special place in my heart. Its elegance and unassuming quality makes it so attractive, and there's so much more to Black & White Photography than just being black, white and gray. I've always thought that without colors, some images speak louder than their usual volumes. Couple that with a minimalistic approach, an involved subject and the right tonal balance, then you'll have an image more arresting than a colored one perhaps. Ansel Adams has always been a big influence on me. I remember devouring his works and looking at them with eyes wide open when I was younger. 'The L.A. Freeway' and his 'Yosemite National Park' series, being two of my many favorites among his art, reminds me that interesting lines and a good foreground keep the photos moving.

Jason C. Veloso GRAPHIC DESIGNER & PHOTOGRAPHER

“Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper the photographer begins with the finished product.” -- Edward Steichen

I’m Jason Chester C. Veloso and currently a Senior Graphic Designer for several I.T. companies. I’m 23. I studied Fine Arts in FEU Manila. Though an accomplished Graphic Designer, my heart is really into Photography. I was a frustrated painter before because I didn’t have the patience to wait the arduous process of finishing my work. But In the advent of Digital technology especially in Photography, I can now produce more well thought images than sketching it manually. I always see to it that every work that I do has a “Painter’s Touch”, that everything is well thought from lighting techniques to posing. As the late Edward Steichen said “Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper the photographer begins with the finished product.” In this particular work, I want to express the femininity and elegance of the model through careful planning of the composition of my shots.
