Editor's Note So what’s the story behind this? Earlier this year, I told myself that I wanted to have a magazine that would not just showcase Filipino talent and skills in photography but also to promote it. Yes, it’s true that a lot of photography magazines are already out in the market. But these magazines mostly talk about the technicalities, review gadgets and functions, and endorse photography gear. This led me to look for a local magazine that really focuses on the art of photography and on photography itself, without the technical information, reviews and advertisements. To be honest, I’m not the type of person who cares about what camera model was used by a photographer, or how expensive the lenses and equipment they used are. I love looking at images that make an impact on how I view them. What really impresses me is how the images look like and how those photographs make me feel. To sum it up, I strongly believe in the adage, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” which simply tells us that any complex idea can be explained with just a single image - nothing more, nothing less. As an admittedly very emotional person, I feel that this trait reflects on how I photograph my subjects. I truly believe that what makes an image a great photograph is one’s passion and the want to create a striking visual impact. After all, isn’t this what photography is all about?

So, in a nut shell... Simulæcrum Magazine is an e-magazine with the mission to promote creative photography nationwide. It aims to be the gateway for photographers, professionals, amateurs, and hobbyists to share their passion and ideas. Hence our tag line: “Be creative. Experiment. Learn. Communicate. Share. Collaborate. Inspire.” This is a magazine dedicated to and for photographers.

Interview

with Fashion Photographer and Mega Fashion Crew Finalist

What Makes a Shoot Special to You? What makes it more than just a “job” or something that pays the rent? - I can say the shoot is special when I’m excited and looking forward to do it. (ex. a dream concept, a campaign, a magazine shoot or I know that I will be working with a fabulous team) - I don’t really think of it as a job because if you start thinking that it’s a job it will become boring. Photography for me is more than just a job. It’s my passion it’s something I can do even if my eyes are closed. “Photography is a lifestyle”.

How to become a Photographer? - Everyone can own a camera but not everyone can be a photographer. There are certain rules in photography but you must not be afraid to break the rules (as long as you know how to break it). - There are lot’s of workshops, classes being offered or just read your camera’s manual - practice whenever you have time but most importantly you have to “follow your heart” - Huwag sumunod sa uso.

What Inspires you to do what you do? What does photography mean to you? - I’ve finally found (discovered) something to do that I know I am good at. Using this God given talent and turn it into a career - that’s my inspiration because not everyone is given the privilege to do what they really love. You have to take care of it and use it in a proper way. - Photography is everything to me. Technically photography is all about light and shadows. Photography is a means of expression.

What is the influence of digital technology on your photography? - unlike film you don’t have to guess what will come out in print. Digital technology is something powerful... You can already alter the exposure (settings), mood (composition). It is something that saves a lot of my time and something that make me addicted to.

How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self? - It’s very important. If your shooting portraits you have to make the subject comfortable... talk to them and explain what you expect from them. Give them an idea (the whole team) by creating a mood

board.. everything must be systematic in order to finish early and achieve what we want to achieve.

Colour vs. Black and White. Why one over the other, and is the photographic process different? - I prefer black and white. It’s something timeless and more dramatic. - Yes it’s different, b&w the process is more simple while in colour you have to consider some elements (ex. color blocking) balanced. 7. How does black and white vs color play into your work? Do you find them to be totally separate beasts—or complementary? - I’ve learned that it must compliment specially when your doing an editorial - shoot it in colour or b&w there must be a continuation or a relation in terms of achieving the mood. Personally B&W is a total beast once you understand it deeply.

Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path? - I’ve got a lot of inspirations to name some of my faves - Helmut newton, Hedi Slimane, Peter Lindbergh, David Sims, Mario Testino, Terry Richardson, Patrick Demarchelier, Lope Navo (the only local that made me say WOAAAHH). - Everyone has a different style and approach and most specially a trademark. I don’t only check on their works but I also read about their biographies on how they started and what inspired them. This gives me a different perspective in such a way that I use it as an inspiration to just keep on shooting not only with my eyes but with my heart. I read about their success stories too and so I challenged myself to do well, keep on learning and improve each day and set a certain goal.

What was your career path? How did you get from being an aspiring photographer to actually doing it full time, for a living? - At first it was really hard... From investing completing your gears and equipment, contacts, learning about working in a studio, etc. - Believe me when I was beginning it was hard for me to find a model I had been denied a couple of times (seen zoned LOL) or they would agree if you shoot them with a fee even though you know they ain’t worth it (all I wanted to do is to practice) - I know a lot of you can relate. “Never give up” on your dreams. Practice!!! That’s why we have test shoots or what some call fun shoots. Use it as a means of learning and also to build up your confidence and

simulæcrum be familiar with your gears, lighting and discovering your own photography style. - After being a finalist of MFC2 (Mega Fashion Crew) and after shooting my very first magazine editorial everything followed as long as you are determined to take the risks and follow your heart.

What motivates you to continue taking pictures economically, politically, intellectually or emotionally? Economically - It’s like I’m just playing (doing what I love) and I get paid for doing it. Politically - move forward. Totally not me. Intellectually and Emotionally - I believe this is the main reason because photography is an art. Be yourself and express yourself. Never shoot to impress but to express. I’m a thinker and I don’t usually talk much... I prefer to write or use photography as a medium.

“Photography is an extension of my love for music and poetry. Instead of writing or composing lyrics, I express my thoughts through my photos.”

PORTRAITS

I’ve

been a quiet fan of Jessica ever since she graced the cover of Rogue in ‘09. Back then, taking photos was not in my box of interests, but her striking almost-feline features (captured by no less than *the* Mark Nicdao) caught my untrained eye. She was nothing short of stellar. Fast forward five years, here I am, fueled by blind instincts, trying to figure out everyday what Happyfingers can achieve with my little camera. I had an idea of what I wanted for Happyfingers and the people I wanted to achieve that vision with. Jessica was definitely top of mind. But would *the Jessica Yang* even take an unknown with a point and shoot seriously? Still, a kid can dream. So I did. I dreamed, planned, sharpened, and in a rare fit of courage, asked. And this happened. I don’t know if taking portraits will take me anywhere, but if Jessica (and precious friends and muses) believed, then maybe I should continue believing. Jessica Yang for Coffee in the City, everybody. :)

FADE

LONGBOY Passion and Portraits Photographer

. SimulĂŚcrum . DECEMBER 2014

cover story

The Interview Who is Fade Longboy? Born and raise where? How old are you and what hobby do you have? Fade Longboy is a 26 year old filmmaker who was once a segment producer from Pinoy Big Brother and now a full-pledged passion photographer. I took up Mass Communication at Far Eastern University and a short course about film and directing at the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts under the FAX program. I am introvert by nature and enjoy playing skill toys such as yoyo and kendama during my free time. I currently work as a freelancer for various video productions. I am born and raised at Quezon City, Philippines. Fairview, represent!

What inspires you? Mostly cinema, like Wong kar wai films that was shot by Christopher Doyle. I also got inspiration from the Japanese culture, be it films, music videos or photography, even if its random or I barely understand their language-- for some reason, I still understand it. I realized that there is no language barrier when it comes to influences in art. Their concepts might be weird but for me it’s an eye opener that tells me: “yes, you can push the limit of every boundaries or concepts”. Their concepts are refreshing for us even though they already outgrew those concepts during the 70’s and the 80’s. The list of my favorite photographers is also populated by the Japanese such as Daido Moriyama, Kishin Shinoyama, Noboyushi Araki, and Rinko Kawauchi.

How to become a Photographer? Tough question, because I think anyone can press a shutter button and be a photographer. I think what makes it different is how well do you know and treat your subjects. If you really know what you want and make time and effort on shooting it, then I guess that’s what matters. It doesn’t matter whatever you see in your viewfinder, be it landscape, portrait, or streets, what matters is the effort on shooting these subjects. Later on, you learn how to dance with the lights, the subject and your environment. Or let’s just say that as a photographer, you let everyone see what you see in this world; the perfections, imperfections, what you like and dislike, it will all come out in your photos. Or simply an instance where you shoot unconsciously and realize that you’ve been shooting for more than a year and has been pushing yourself and your cam to its limit. Maybe that’s what it takes.

What makes the good picture stand out from the average? To be honest, I am not a technical photographer; I barely have an idea about light meters, lenses and other settings. So whenever I see a beautiful photo, I always look after that unexplainable feeling, regardless of its technical-- subject, composition, or post processing. That unexplainable feeling that kicks. That same classic feeling when a kid is pulling up his photos from an envelope and sees it right after it was developed.

What does photography mean to you? When I was a kid, I remembered that I used to have a camera as a toy-- the Kodak 110, a rectangular shaped point and shoot camera. I used to play with it, even if it doesn’t have a film inside. I loved looking inside its viewfinder and clicking the shutter. I used to direct my family and friends to do a pose and it made me so happy.

Now I can say that I owe a lot to photography, it kept me sane after I lost my passion in filmmaking and after I quit my job in a TV network. I told myself that I will do photography. It didn’t cross my mind to make money out if it or turn it into a business. What I want is for me to have an outlet for my overflowing creative juices. I just want to be honest to myself and do the shoots that I want. The same thing I said to my previous supervisor before I resigned, he won’t allow me, but still I quit. My experience is incomparable to my 40k monthly salary before. Hard-headed as I can be, i chose it. I’ve got no money but I am happy. Photography led me to a lot of things. I met a lot of people, some are good and some are not. But I can say that I have learned lot things from them, be it life lessons or photography lessons. Learnings that guide me in my everyday life. One instance is about how I acquired this camera, which I currently use. It was lend to me by a good hearted man when he saw my post in Facebook, that I was selling my camera. He doesn’t want me to stop my photography so he gave me his camera, he doesn’t want to reveal his identity but I am really grateful for what he did. Thanks to photography because I was able to share how I see the beauty of this world. I also thank the other photographers for sharing never ending energy coming from their photographs. I am very thankful to photography because it saved me from depression.

One of today’s main discussion points amongst photographers is about the use of digital photography; do you use digital cameras? Yes, 99% of my work is digital and 1% analog. But if I have the luxury of both money and time, I’ll use film.

How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self? To be honest, I am a natural introvert and a shy type when it comes to girls. They call me ‘torpe’ and I always get awkward when talking to girls. But because of photography and being honest, everything went too smoothly. If first time models, I try to invite them for a chat over coffee and eventually get to know them, their childhood or what they feel. But it doesn’t mean that I want to date them or what, I just want to get to know them so I can understand who they are. I don’t usually ask a model to pose for me, I just want them to be themselves and in return I share them my stories. Eventually, most of my models became my close friends and it really helps to spark new interests when doing a shoot with them. I always believe that when you become honest with what you do, the models will also become honest with what they feel and becomes a synergy. The collaboration becomes effective, when I give a positive energy the models will give me a positive energy and vice versa. I don’t ask them to smile for me, unless it’s natural. Why? Because we don’t usually smile when we’re alone, right? To connect with my models is one of the most important things in my process during photography. I have to be honest and let them feel that they are the most beautiful woman during our shoot, not through words but through an intangible connection. Same with how we court women, we make them feel beautiful, be careful with our words and more importantly, let them feel safe, because once

DECEMBER 2014 . Simulæcrum

. 41

cover story

they feel it; it will get back to you. The process becomes healthier as they will reciprocate what they feel by giving their best to equate the passion I show them. I have secret ways to make them feel comfortable and be in their natural state so we will have a smooth flow during shoot; maybe the way I do each shoot also helps to make them feel comfortable. I’m not the serious type when shooting, no pressure and I also let them feel that I’m in love with them, but that is only for shooting purposes. Of course, I know how to detach after, but sometimes, detaching is not that easy.

Can you walk us through the actual process that you use to set up a portrait? I follow my instincts, because sometimes it’s hard for me to catch my momentum. I usually drink coffee or energy drinks to make me feel hyper to follow the flow. It also depends on the energy of my models, because I avoid showing pegs for them, unless it’s necessary. I don’t follow pegs because it usually varies on the actual location, weather or mood of the model. I am talkative during a shoot, I used to chat with my models about their life, their second favorite color and then I used to do my classic green jokes and pickup lines. Instead of directing their pose, I usually give them scenarios, just like a film director does. My models know how long I shoot, some lasts for 6 hours, some even lasts for 12 hours. But those hours also include the chitchat sessions and hanging around with the models, I want them to feel unrestricted and to enjoy my company.

Locations and weather conditions seem to be a crucial aspect to a successful picture. How do you handle these unpredictable factors? And because I trust my instincts, I always expect the unexpected. I use my disadvantage to my advantage. In an instance, when it rains, I use the rain during shoot. When it’s dark, I use darkness in my photos. I try to adapt as much as possible unless it’s unadaptable and we really have to cancel the shoot. At times, I wait for the unpredictable factors to tone down or at least be okay. It matters because sometimes when you wait, you’ll be surprised with the outcome, it is much better to what you have expected or planned.

So saan nga ba galing at bakit nagkaroon ng

Para bang may superpowers ako to stop time at to control people within a frame at kulayan siya na naayon sa akin.

Simple, walang ayos. In your face, realidad. Palaging stressed at araw-araw kong namimiss magshoot.

Wag na mag-make up, ang nakakatawa dun. Hindi pala talaga nagme-make up si Carey.

“I don’t ask them to smile for me, unless it’s natural. Why? Because we don’t usually smile when we’re alone, right?”

Hanggang ngayon, hindi ako makapaniwalang first shoot niya

yun. Naging madali ang lahat. Swabe.

Wala akong back up nun, wala din akong balak pagkakitaan ang photography.

Wag niyo din seryosohin ang photography masyado in terms of gusto niyo maging magaling. Be playful, don’t act as if you’re trying to be the best photographer around. Marami pang time para maglaro at experiment. Get to know them well and discover something new to

Use your feet to get the shot as well, gumalaw ka, find the shot at perspective na gusto mo. I don’t use Photoshop. Di dahil ayaw ko, kundi di ako marunong. At thankful ako sa models ko dahil wala naman akong kailangang i-retouch sa kanila and more on colors lang talaga ang ginagamit ko. I have more to discover. And I’m not claiming everything.

The Interview Who are you? And why get into Photography? What inspires you?

What is the influence of digital technology on your photography?

I’m John Vincent Sanido.

What makes the good picture stand out from the average? Pagnakita mo pa lang yung picture at pumasok kaagad sayo yung message, ayun malakas yun.

What does photography mean to you? Photography is a major part of my life, one of my major passions. One of today’s main discussion points amongst photographers is about the use of digital photography; do you use digital cameras? Yes, nag simula ako sa digital.

70

. Simulæcrum . DECEMBER 2014

How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self?

Locations and weather conditions seem to be a crucial aspect to a successful picture. How do you handle these unpredictable factors?

Interview

Roi

with Portrait and Events Photographer

Francisco Who is Roi Francisco before becoming a photographer?

How has social media played a role in your photography?

I was an Architecture student in UP Diliman before I started shooting professionally, though working with a camera has always been a part of my life since childhood. My grandmother had a humble photography studio complete with a darkroom, and her brother used to be a presidential photographer, so eventually venturing seriously into photography as well felt very natural to me.

It’s been really easy showcasing what I do thanks to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. It’s also allowed me to connect with some amazing people I look up to, and in turn see what they’re working on.

Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that? I started shooting professionally as a wedding photographer, so capturing emotion has always been a big deal to me. This photo set on the other hand showcases the subjects’ skill more than emotion.

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos? I wish I had learned the basics early on, especially since there were a handful of people whom I could have learned from in the family. I used to play with an old Pocket Instamatic all day long, but never really asked anyone how to take a decent photo.

How important is it for a photographer to “connect” with his subjects to bring out their true self? Very -- and not at all. There are times where it is crucial that a photographer takes the lead, for the subject to follow every minute detail (like in portraiture). Other times, a photographer should step down and assume the role of follower as the subject takes the helm (like in performances). And there are times where in this ‘connection’ should be severed completely, for the subject to be able to be in her complete element (like in photojournalism). The subject brings out their true self when and where they see fit – in my opinion, a photographer is never really in control of that.

Why do you take photos? I take photos because I love capturing people, what they do, and what they want to achieve, because I feel there are so many talents, passions, and endeavors out there that are worth noticing, and I constantly hope that taking their photos give these things a second chance to be seen again.

What inspired you to take photography? I’ve always wanted to take up Fine Arts just like my father, however I did not make the cut when I applied for it back in college. Though it really stung a bit back then, I still went to the same direction and took Art Studies, before eventually switching to and finishing with Architecture. Freehand illustration has always been a frustration, so I thought maybe I could try a different medium of making images - and so here I am.

What makes a good picture stand out from the average?

The decisive moment, as Henri Cartier-Bresson calls it. A fleeting moment in time where everything – subject, background, foreground, elements, details, etc. -- falls right into place. A photographer friend and mentor once told me, “If you saw it (in the viewfinder), you didn’t capture it.”

What is one question nobody has ever asked you— that you wish they asked you? “Do I get paid enough? Moreover, do I get paid enough for every effort that goes into doing photography?” It starts off as a joke in my head, but come to think of it, it’s quite a valid question I want to be asked about. Lots of misconceptions go about how much a photographer actually earns, and only people in the industry and the related fields know the reality. Honestly, who gets paid enough in the scene these days? The effort we all put into any passion we undertake is rarely compensated properly in a cost-cutting, corrupt, selfentitled society. In my opinion, it can only get better if we start changing it ourselves. If we don’t know how to compensate the other guy properly, then how can we expect to get paid enough?

simulæcrum How do you get paid to do what you want to do with your photography? I’ve been blessed and lucky to have very supportive friends, family, colleagues, and even clients who constantly keep encouraging me to appreciate the full value of the time, passion, and effort that I put into my work. Thanks to them, I’ve learned that there are very real and valid reasons why I shouldn’t do what I do for free. Now I am privileged to be venturing full-time as the lead photographer at The Right Frame Studios.

About this photos that you submitted what where you feeling or thinking when you captured it? And why this set? I chose to feature this set because I wanted to showcase this extremely talented group of people, and because their skills ceaselessly inspire me to shoot performance arts. They are literally beasts in their craft, and I am just lucky enough of a fan to be able to capture what they do.

FUN SHOOT PORTRAITS

Jhe Olaño 27 yrs old, from Quezon City

Let’s get to know him better as he answers some questions that we provided. He’s latest subject, commercial model and endorser Rojean Delos Reyes on the succeeding pages... Who is Jhe Olaño? Born and raise where? Age and occupation? Anime and Game enthusiast, born and raised in Quezon City, Age 27 working as a production and database analyst.

What type of photographer do you consider yourself? (Fashion, portraits, street, etc.) Fashion and Cosplay photographer.

What other (street) photographers (contemporary) and collectives you like to follow— and what about their work do you love? Zack Arias! I guess I need not to say more about this person because I think he is quite famous on this forte, I love how he uniquely produce every single work and his blog is really informative :)

Do you take photos more for yourself—or for others? I take more photos for others because it feels good whenever you see the subject/people smile and being happy towards your work.

92

. Simulæcrum . DECEMBER 2014

simulæcrum How do you educate yourself to take better pictures? I read articles and tutorial online. :)

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why? My shoot with Ms. Dasuri Choi, because it’s the first time I work with a really great model, I didn’t have hard time to work with her because she is professional and she knows how to deal when it comes to posing and giving life and story to the picture.

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

MODEL : JUDIELYN CHANG | JHE OLAÑO

Learn to follow rules and then disregard all the rules ha-ha. In the end, it is still how a photographer can produced a great output even after breaking the rules.

When you go in one of your travels, what all you take with you? Why? My handy dandy note 2, it’s all in one tiny gadget, GPS, maps and you can search for a near places/location for shoots, pegs, etc.

“Learn to follow rules and then disregard all the rules ha-ha. In the end, it is still how a photographer can produced a great output even after breaking the rules.” Which photographers influenced you, and how did they influence your thinking, photographing, and career path? Two of my greatest inspirations and influence me mostly were Hybridre (cosplay photographer) from China and Thomas Liu (fashion photographer) from Hong Kong, all of their works are carefully crafted, distinctive, have story and impact on the viewer’s perspective.

What Makes a Shoot Special to You?

MODEL : DASURI CHOI | JHE OLAÑO

Hmmm... tough question for me hahaha, because I consider majority of my work as special since the subject and me put lots of effort to create good output, I guess it makes even more special when your subject is your close friend since you are more comfortable working with each other. :)

Patrick Ligot Capturing Toys in Action

I

graduated with a degree of BS Nursing back in 2008 and earned my professional license of that very same year. My passion in photography started after our home was devastated by the dreadful monsoon storm Ondoy back in 2009. Nothing was left except our clothes we were wearing and my first DSLR Nikon D40. It was the only thing that I could use to cope up for the experience that I had during the storm. Safe to say that it serve as a therapy to recover myself emotionally. Therapy turned passion and hobby. My photography style would be more about realism and use of ambient lighting. I ‘am fond of cinematic way of approach in my photographs that would be both on layout and color treatment.

Phonography

There are times that you won’t have your camera with you, whether it’s a point & shoot or a DSLR. Truth is, a smartphone, whatever brand you fancy, is the most convenient and handy camera that you can carry all the time. Simply, you’ll already have had it (as always) with you, which is timely, for example, when you know you’ll be dining out at a fancy restaurant. Let’s say you do own a nice camera, but let’s be honest, you’ll probably use your iPhone, Samsung or whatever brand of smartphone you carry to capture everything that catches your artistic eye, just because it’s the fastest to use and often the most readily available anytime. So here at Simulæcrum we saved a special place for you where you can showcase those wonderful and lovely images that you want to share with fellow smartphone photographers.

p.s if it’s in instagram we definitely would love to showcase it here. So start sharing it with us!

Roi francisco The Right Frame Studios

On the earlier pages of this magazine, he graced us with his images of young and amazingly talented pole dancers, and now he allowed us to showcase his other hobby. Whether he is out working in the field or having a romantic date with his girlfriend, Roi also takes a lot of selfies! Nope, not exactly taking photos of himself per se, but of anything that gets his attention - simply and primarily for his artistic selfindulgence. Here are some of the images he’s shared with us that would also inspire and make viewers think twice. One can never know what kind of art one can create by just simply using a handy smart phone! “People have often told me that I should have a hobby besides what I do for a living to avoid fallout, but I think getting burnt out with what you’re passionate about is normal, and one really does get it regularly. Posting on Instagram allows me to showcase a different side of my work, or at times just be a venue for creative exercise. Like crosswords for writers, I would like to think that it keeps me sharp, even when I’m not holding my camera.” - Roi Francisco

Paolo Nacpil Captured Photos

A good man from Marikina City, and now currently living in Granite Bay, California. With his approval, we personally handpicked photos from his Instagram account to showcase here at Simulæcrum. Looking at these images, we can surely say that he’s definitely got the eyes and the skills! What we loved the most about his photographs is the wonderful scenery of his surrounding areas. Being able to capture such breathtaking and surreal photos of nature and landscapes, and to share it with all of us, is really amazing. So in behalf of all the people who admire his work, we thank you Sir Paolo for allowing us to have another inspiration to work hard and continue loving photography.

“We love nature, landscapes, and travel a lot. More often than not, we find ourselves just staring and looking at the beautiful sceneries that nature has to offer. Sad thing is, there are times that those places that we’ve visited will change, and it won’t look the same way again. And those fun memories that we had will be gone forever.” - Simulæcrum Magazine

Acknowledment Photography is my salvation from all the anxiety and everyday troubles that I meet. Without it, I don’t think I can survive this crazy world that we now live in. Therefore, I dedicate this endeavor to all my friends that kept on encouraging me to continue this project. It has been a very busy, hectic and stressful experience, that I almost gave up near the end. But true friends will always find a way to cheer you up and give you that positive vibe, and for this I am thankful.

Images presented on the magazine are a collaborative contribution of certain people who found photography as a therapy for boredom and anxiety. An online magazine that showcases unique individuals’ passion for photography all over the globe. This magazine aspires to promote camaraderie and goodwill. It doesn’t just highlight the skills of a particular photographer, it also provides in-depth information on who, how, and what inspired them to come to love their craft.
