Singapore Book Awards 2022

Welcome Message

Derived from the Latin “publicare”, it means “to make public, to reveal, divulge, announce”. To publish a book is an utterly challenging yet fulfilling endeavour. It is both an art and a craft. How does one transform that painstakinglypenned manuscript into a work that’s available to the public and yes, a work the public wants to read? That’s the publisher’s responsibility. It requires editors, illustrators, layout artists, publicists, printers… the whole works!

Dear WhatFriends,ispublishing?

Which is why the Singapore Book Awards exists! To honour the outstanding people who give a whole new meaning to our lives. I can’t imagine my life without books. Can you? This year’s SBA ceremony is momentous. After two years of “seclusion”, we now come together to honour the best in our industry. And isn’t it truly fitting to award these outstanding publishers in The Fullerton Hotel, the bastion of grandeur? I am absolutely thrilled and grateful to have chaired this project. I must also commend the massive efforts of our secretariat, without which this finale would not have happened. I’d like to end with a quote from George R. R. Martin: A reader lives a thousand lives before he Thedies;man who never reads lives only one. Catherine Khoo Chair, Singapore Book Awards 2022 Singapore Book Publishers Association

DATA PRIVACY AND CYBERSECURITY LAW: RISKS AND MITIGATION PROFESSIONAL TITLE FINALISTS

Authors: Paul Flanagan, James Goepel, Jared Paul Miller, Bridget Kathleen Mead, James Ottavio Castagnera

An increasing number of national and regional jurisdictions have been implementing data privacy and cybersecurity laws; however, few, if any, jurisdictions have laws which provide concrete guidance for organisations on how to comply. Outside of the law, data privacy and cybersecurity threats have started to significantly harm companies’ bottom lines. This book seeks to bridge the gaps between legal requirements, data privacy and cybersecurity threats, and the implementation of data privacy and cybersecurity strategies. This book guides organisations through the implementation of comprehensive enterprise risk management (‘ERM’) and compliance programs that reduce organisational risks and legal liabilities while operationalising cybersecurity and data privacy strategies. The book includes a discussion of the cybersecurity and data privacy legal situation in several ASEAN member states and how their various legal structures influence their approach to cybersecurity and data privacy.

AMERICA: A SINGAPORE PERSPECTIVE NON-FICTION TITLE FINALISTS

Language of Publication: English Synopsis: The United States of America is the largest investor in Singapore. And in 2019, it channelled more resources (US$288 billion) into the city state than what it put into both China (US$116.2 billion) and Japan (US$131.8 billion) combined. This illustrates the economic significance of the US to Singapore. Beyond that, the US is also a very important partner of Singapore in security, education and culture. And so, Singaporeans should learn more about the superpower, thought Professor Tommy Koh, Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large who had served as its Ambassador to the United States, and Mr Daljit Singh, Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute. They gathered 27 other writers with a good understanding of America to pen a collection of 29 essays, America: A Singapore Perspective. The compendium reveals insights into the various aspects of the US: its governing, election and political systems; business and economy; defence and foreign policy; as well as culture and culture wars.

The eastern archipelagos stretch from Mindanao and Sulu in the north to Bali in the southwest and New Guinea in the southeast. Many of their inhabitants are regarded as “people without history”, while colonial borders cut across shared underlying patterns. Yet many of these societies were linked to trans-oceanic trading systems for millennia. Indeed, some of the world’s most prized commodities once came from territories which were either “stateless” or under the very tenuous control of loosely structured polities. Although individual regimes sought to control traffic, exchange between trans-regional or even trans-oceanic shippers and local communities was often direct, without mediation by overarching authorities.

Trade provides the integrating framework for local and regional histories that cover more than 300 years, from the late 16th century to the beginning of the 20th, when new technologies and changing markets signalled Western dominance. The introduction considers theories from the social sciences and economics which can help liberate writers from dependence on states as narrative frameworks. Southeast Asian specialists can learn from this book, which ignores conventional geographic and temporal boundaries. It will also appeal to those working on wider themes such as global history, state formation, the evolution of markets and anthropology.
