MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Message from the President This Directory of the members of the Singapore Book Publishers Association provides detailed information on the members of the book publishing companies based in Singapore and some of the association’s activities. Members in this directory constitute the majority of the book publishing industry in Singapore and this list continues to grow. We estimate that our industry contributes some S$1.2 billion to the local economy. Exciting new members have been added to the established local publishers. It is not surprising that education publishing has always been one of our core pillars, stemming from Singapore’s world-class education system. In addition, the local market for fiction and trade nonfiction has been growing with many new locally published books geared for both the local and international markets. Our STM and professional publishers have continued to form partnership with Singaporean and Asian researchers and academics to publish ground-breaking scientific and academic content. We are glad to note that large multinational publishers have long been part of our publishing landscape and are an important part of our industry. Attracted by Singapore’s conducive business-friendly environment, IP protection laws and world class education institutions, these companies set up their Asian regional offices here to capitalise on the growing markets of ASEAN and other parts of Asia. We hope to encourage more international publishers to set up their regional headquarters in Singapore to take advantage of the growing Asian book market and be part of our dynamic ecosystem. Book publishers, local and foreign-owned, partner Singapore’s students, parents, and teachers in education, power Singapore’s research and development efforts with scholarly communications, and play a foundational role in Singapore’s creative economy by supporting our literary talents.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Today, the book publishing industry is facing an uncertain couple of years due to COVID 19. Online sales of print books and e-books have not been able to cover the loss in revenues experienced by physical stores. The number of bookstores in the country has declined due to high rentals and the current pandemic crisis only worsens the profitability of the bookstores, resulting in more store closures. Many physical activities the last two years had to be cancelled and conducted online. However, we do see the light at the end of the tunnel. As the percentage of vaccinations in most countries reach a certain level, more countries like Singapore are opening up their borders normalising the flow of goods and people. We hope that starting 2022, we will see more physical industry activities like book fairs, book launches, book talks, conferences and other events. I am sure all of us are looking forward to seeing each other in person, networking or just catching up. With a continued collaborative and positive mindset, I am sure all of us will emerge from this pandemic stronger with a resilient and dynamic book industry!

ABOUT SBPA HISTORY
About SBPA
History The concept of a book publishers association was first mooted at a workshop on “Book Publishing and Distribution” held in Singapore in 1966. It was not until 19 July 1968 that the Singapore Book Publishers Association was formally incorporated with 22 member companies, 14 of which were of Singapore origin. Practically all of the original members were engaged in the publishing, importation and distribution of textbooks. The changing composition of today’s membership reflects the industry’s broadening scope as content developers across media.

To promote and protect, by all lawful means, the interests of the publishers of Singapore.
05

ABOUT SBPA HISTORY
Main Activities The members of the association are engaged in the following areas of business:
01
Publishing and distribution of educational books, general and scholarly works, audiovisual materials and electronic publications.
02
Exploring the development of e-content for new media on new platforms.
03
Importation and distribution of books.
04
Co-publishing, translations and joint venture arrangements with international publishers for regional and export markets.
05
Sales and purchase of rights for both Singapore and foreign-published books.
Singapore’s strategic geographical position and the efficiency of its work-force together with modern banking and transportation facilities have made the Republic an ideal centre for investment in publishing and printing. New technologies and facilities have enabled Singapore to print and distribute magazines and books globally. The SBPA continues to work closely with various local and international strategic partners to achieve its goals and objectives, and be much involved in Singapore’s development into an international media hub. The association also participates in regional book fairs and organises events such as the Singapore National Pavilion at the Frankfurt Book Fair and Beijing International Book Fair. Our strategic partners include Enterprise Singapore (ESG), Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA), National Arts Council (NAC) and National Library Board (NLB). Affiliates The association’s involvement in the ASEAN Book Publishers Association (ABPA) facilitates cooperation and co-publishing between SBPA members and their ASEAN counterparts, and members’ entry into regional markets. The association also represents Singapore at the Asia Pacific Publishers Association (APPA).

SINGAPORE BOOK AWARDS
SINGAPORE BOOK AWARDS
SINGAPORE BOOK AWARDS The Singapore Book Awards is an annual industry award for books published in Singapore. Held annually since 2016, the Book Awards shine the spotlight on the quality of published works and celebrate the achievements of the local publishing industry. For 2022, the award categories have been reorganised to 12 award categories to better reflect and recognise the range of books published in Singapore. The categories of the Book Awards are: • Best Audiobook • Best Book Cover Design • Best Custom Publishing • Best Education Title • Best Illustrated Non-Fiction Title • Best Literary Work
• • • • • •
Best Magazine Title Best Non-Fiction Title Best Picture Book Best Professional Title Best Young Persons Title Book of the Year
The Book Awards was first launched in 2012 through the efforts of the Executive Committee led by then-SBPA President Triena Ong. Known then as the Publishing Awards, there were five award categories (Best Cover Design, Best Debut Work, Best Non-Fiction Title, Best Novel and Best Retail). The winners of the Publishing Awards were announced at a gala dinner at the Rendezvous Hotel during the Singapore Writers’ Festival 2012. Between 2012-2016, the Association concentrated on building up the presence of the Singapore publishing industry at overseas book fairs. The awards were relaunched in 2016 as the Singapore Book Awards with 8 award categories. In 2020, the number of award categories increased to 11 award categories with the addition of the Best Audiobook Title, Best Digital Marketing Campaign and Best E-Book Title. For the 2021 Book Awards, the Best Digital Marketing Campaign was adjourned and the Best E-Book Title was renamed as the Best Hybrid Book. A separate category, the Readers’ Choice Awards, was introduced for the first time.

SBPA INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
SBPA INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME The inaugural SBPA Internship Programme was successfully held from 25 May to 31 July 2015. An instant success with students and member companies, the number of participating companies has increased from six for the first run to seventeen companies in 2021. The class of interns has also expanded from nine interns in 2015 to forty-one interns in 2021. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the organisation of site visits, the SBPA Internship Programme continued with a series of virtual seminars from 17 May to 23 July 2021. The concept of the SBPA Internship Programme originated from Peter Schoppert, SBPA President (2014-2020). Interns are recruited via a central process administered by the SBPA Secretariat. Companies would remain responsible for their interns while the SBPA organised a centralised training programme and site visits for the interns. These training sessions include a whole range of topics – from introductory courses on publishing, editing, and copyright to marketing and design, while the site visits include virtual trips to printers and bookstores. Through this comprehensive programme, interns are given a wide exposure to the industry, with opportunities to network among peers and learn about technical areas from the most qualified professionals. The SBPA Secretariat would like to thank the following speakers for lending their time and support for this meaningful and educational initiative. • Mr Max Phua of World Scientific Publishing Co • Mr Peter Schoppert of NUS Press • Mr Andrew Fong of Copyright Licensing and Administration Society of Singapore Ltd • Mr Denon Lim of Lingzi Media Pte Ltd • Mr Yeoh Cheng Poh of Marshall Cavendish Education • Mr Mark Garlinghouse of STM • Mr Barry Clarke of Taylor and Francis Asia Pacific • Mr Anil Chandy of Springer Nature Singapore • Mr Melvin Neo of Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) • Ms Shoba Nair of ilovereading.sg • Ms Lindsay Davis of NUS Press • Ms Sophia Susanto of Difference Engine • Ms Kum Suning of Ethos Books • Mr Edmund Wee of Epigram Books • Mr David Liew • Ms Elaine Ee of National Gallery Singapore • Ms Khoo Yee Hong of World Scientific Publishing Co • Mr William Phuan and Ms Nurul Shafienas of Singapore Book Council

D espite the COVID restrictions, the interns had the opportunity of embarking on a site visit to the Times Bookstore at Waterway Point to learn more about how published books are sold at retail stores.
Details of the 2022 SBPA Internship Programme will be released soon. To take part, please contact the Secretariat at info@singaporebookpublishers.sg

Tusitala is a digital storytelling studio that reimagines the future of reading where tech meets art. We use our expertise in technology, UI and UX, and design to transcend the traditional boundaries of print and digital.
Tusitala started in 2010 and is based in Singapore. It means “teller of tales” in Samoan. It was the nickname given to author Robert Louis Stevenson by the locals of Samoa, where he spent the last years of his life telling stories. Our work embodies the essence of a storyteller: using different mediums and techniques to deliver a powerful message to audiences.
